Donation moves West Carleton War Memorial plans forward Brier Dodge

A private donation received at the end of April was enough to hit the $200,000 fundraising mark set for the war memorial in West Carleton, Coun. Eli El-Chantiry told city council on April 29. He asked for the normal procedure for council to give the OK be waived because there was a May 1 deadline to apply for federal funding. El-Chantiry was asking council to approve the use of city land at Donald B. Munro Drive and Falldown Lane in
Carp before moving forward with the application to the Department of Canadian Heritage through the World War Commemorations Community Funding Program. City staff has already worked with the West Carleton War Memorial Committee to secure required approvals for the site, and had no issues with the use of the land. “This project, we’ve been working on it for quite some time,” El-Chantiry said. “Because most of the funding was from the community, it took us a little bit of time.” He said the project is both
an excellent way to commemorate veterans, as well as clean up the triangle of land that often has trash dumped on it. Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper asked about community consultation, and if residents were in support of the project. “For a small community of 2,500 to raise that money within a couple of years means there was strong community support,” El-Chantiry said. City council approved the motion. The goal completion date of the project is this year’s Remembrance Day.

Carp brush fire highlights importance of burn ban An aerial photograph of a four-acre brush fire on Monday, May 4. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire near 183 Charlie’s Lane. A city-wide burn ban is still in effect. See the full story on page 4.
Participants couldn’t argue with the weather May 2 for the 19th edition Diefenbooker Classic, although some probably noticed the heat as they took part with the walk-runcycle event.
Injured? We can help
The West Carleton branches of the Ottawa Public Library (Carp, Constance Bay and Fitzroy Harbour) were once again the true winners of the event. This year the funds raised were more than $20,000 - which is close to the same mark as last year. “There were around 650

registered,” said committee chairperson Hugh Urbach. The exact number was 658 participants, a slight drop from the 734 who took part last year, but the weather and the turnout help make stamp the event as a success. See DIEFENBOOKER, page 3
