Brush fires ‘double’ over last year: Burke More than a dozen calls in West Carleton alone Jessica Cunha

The warm temperatures and lack of snow melt this spring caused a spike in grass and brush fires across West Carleton and citywide. Before the rains came over the May 9-10
weekend, the “amazingly dry” conditions were coupled with a spike in temperatures – Friday, May 8 saw a high of plus-30 degrees – causing dangerous circumstances, said District 6 sector chief Chris Burke, and kept a burn ban in place for nearly four weeks. Although the burn ban had been in place since mid-April, firefighters responded to more brush and grass fires this spring versus 2014. “This year we’ve probably had about double the number of grass and brush fires than last year,” said Burke. Heather Sebalj is thrilled to have her horse Myles back home. An anonymous message on Facebook, and her own investigative skills, tracked him down at a small boarding facility in the Almonte area on May 6. Ontario Provincial Police arrested and R0013180991-0319
charged two people. “I couldn’t believe it. I thought I’d never see that horse again,” said Sebalj. “Facebook is a wonderful thing when you need to use it.” Sebalj received a message from a Facebook user, who wished to remain anonymous, after a post about her stolen horse was shared across social media.
