Expanded Dave Smith Carp facility gets nod from city Emma Jackson
emma.jackson@metroland.com
Three Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre facilities could soon come together under one roof thanks to a recent nod from the city. The agriculture and rural affairs committee approved on May 7 a zoning bylaw amendment and Official Plan amendment to allow a new 30-bed addictions and mental health treatment facility at 1883 Bradley Side Rd. in Carp. Right now the organization operates a 14-bed male campus in Carleton Place and a 10-bed girl’s campus on the Carp property up for redevelopment. It also runs a family services centre on Bronson Avenue downtown. The organization serves about 125 youth aged 13 to 21 every year, helping them overcome substance abuse as
well as mental health issues during three-month residential visits. The facility serves another 250 people through family support programs. While clinical services vice president Mike Beauchesne called the ARAC approval a “substantial step” for the project, there’s still a lot of work ahead to get there. Even if city council does give the final go-ahead, the province must also bestow its regulatory blessing, for instance. And then there’s the fundraising: even with the eventual sale of the Carleton Place and Bronson properties (the Carp property is leased from the Royal Ottawa Hospital), the project’s budget could surpass $9 million once all is said and done, Beauchesne said. The septic system alone could cost $400,000. See SIX NEW, page 7

Arts Alive and well at Huntley Students from Huntley Centennial Public School fill the Carp Agricultural Hall with their artistic talents at the schoolwide Arts Alive! festival on May 8. Suzanna Persaud, in Grade 4, shows off an amazing set of pipes. The two-day event, which corresponded with the opening of the Carp Farmers Market, showcased student performers – singers, dancers, musical instrument virtuosos – as well as various art projects.
