Students raise $75,000 for fight against cancer Jessica Cunha

West Carleton Secondary School students raised more than $75,000 for this year’s Relay for Life event. Forty-one teams of 10 students took to the school’s track for the 12-hour relay on May 27-28. “The importance of what you’re doing tonight is huge,” said Stephen Eisenhauer, music teacher at Kanata's Jack Donohue Public School and one of the many cancer survivors honoured during the relay.
Eisenhauer, who has taught many of the students at West and often discussed the importance of critical thinking in his class, was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2014. “While I was in the hospital I learned that in order to really defeat this disease we need critical thinking, but we also need the innovators, we need the courage for people to push the boundaries, which is not the easiest thing to do,” he said. “I'm very happy to say that because of people who
are willing to push that boundary and innovate, I'm going to be able to see (my) kids graduate from this high school in 2026, 2028 and 2031. I hope that you know that what you’re doing tonight very much plays into that.” Many of those relaying had personal reasons for taking part – WCSS teacher Michelle Pert was diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer at age 13. Now 48, she and her daughter Molly Stewart, 13, took part in the survivor lap and dinner. See YOU ARE, page 2
