Carp triathlete rebounds to make Pan Am Games Jessica Cunha
jessica.cunha@metroland.com
Carp’s Joanna Brown will represent community and country at the Pan American Games in Toronto this month. Brown, who’s medalled at the Under-23 and Junior World Championships, was named to the Canadian women’s triathlon team along with Olympian and five-time World Triathlon Series winner Paula Findlay, of Edmonton, and World Cup silver medalist Ellen Pennock, of Calgary. “I’m so excited about it,” said the 22-year-old, who studies marketing management at the University of Guelph and is working towards her bachelor of commerce. “It’s been a pretty rough year. I ended up being accepted to the team; I couldn’t believe I’d been given this opportunity.” Brown had to take two
months off to deal with an illness at the beginning of 2015, something that doesn’t come easily when you’re used to training 25-plus hours a week, she said. Brown began to train heavily again in March – “I don’t know if there is such thing as balance really; it’s kind of all in with triathlon,” she said – but then suffered another setback in May. “I was running on the trails and I tripped and I broke my elbow,” said Brown. “I was feeling pretty unlucky … Mentally it was hard to have another road block. I just felt like I couldn’t get a break.” She took a week-anda-half off from physical activity before her orthopaedic surgeon gave her the go-ahead to start light training. See PAN AM, page 4

Land transfer fees waived for West Carleton War Memorial Jessica Cunha

The West Carleton War Memorial passed another hurdle on June 24 – the committee won’t have to pay $9,400 in fees for the “road closure” at the junction of Donald B. Munro Drive
and Falldown Lane in order for construction to move forward. West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry put forward a motion during last Wednesday’s council meeting to waive the fees, which passed unanimously. He pointed out that it’s not

a road closure as mentioned in the motion, but a transfer in order for construction to begin. “There will be no road closures. All we’re doing is transferring the road allowance to parkland,” he said. “Yesterday we got approval to basically transfer that piece

from road to parkland. “That’s what it means. It doesn’t mean we are closing Falldown Lane. “Once the work is finished, the park will be given back to the city.” See WAR, page 3
