Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Jack MacLaren says he will run for his party’s nomination in the new riding of Kanata-Carleton.

The Progressive Conservative incumbent – in what is currently the riding of Carleton-Mississippi Mills – began knocking on doors about two weeks ago, he said.

The riding will be slightly reshaped before the next provincial election – scheduled for 2018 – and take on the name Kanata-Carleton.

“We fully intend to carry on and compete in this nomination meeting and work our

A 23-year-old man from a well-known Galetta family has been identified as the driver killed when his car rolled over several times near MacLaren’s Landing July 15.

Friends confirmed that Brady Lorne Mills, the son of the owners of Al’s Corner Store in Galetta, was the man killed in the crash near the corner of Woodkilton and Galetta Side roads just before 10 a.m. last Friday.

Mills, a graduate of Arn-

prior District High School, is being mourned by family and a large number of friends.

He was an avid outdoorsman and earned a designation as a master gunsmith, a trade he practiced out of Al’s Corner Store.

His obituary notes he “loved the rural life and all it brought his way. His passion for guns and innate creativity allowed him to become accomplished in his trade at a young age.”

Brady was the son of Alan and Cheryl Mills and brother of Tyler. He is also survived by his grandmothers Lorraine Reed and Ina Mills of Arnprior and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The Pilon Family Funeral Home in Arnprior is looking after funeral arrangements.

Visitations are scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday (July 21) from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Friday

9:30-11 a.m. The service will be held at 11 a.m. in the Pilon Family Chapel.

In memory of Brady, the family is suggesting donations to the Arnprior Fish and Game Club, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or the Alzheimer Society of Ontario.

Ottawa Police, Ottawa Fire Services and Ottawa Paramedics received the 911 call around 9:47 a.m. July 15. Mills’ vehicle had gone off the road and rolled over several times before coming to rest in a cornfield near the Woodkilton-Galetta Side road intersection.

Early reports indicated someone was either trapped or had been ejected from the car.

However, the first firefighter on the scene confirmed extrication was not needed as nobody was located inside the vehicle.

The driver, who had been ejected from the vehicle, was found with no vital signs.

Because of reports there had been more than one person in the vehicle, firefighters and police undertook a

BRADY MILLS complete search of the area, sweeping it twice. But no one else was found.

As of 11:22 a.m. the Ottawa Police confirmed with a tweet on social media that “a male involved in the serious collision on Galetta Side Road has succumbed to his injuries.” Galetta Side Road was closed to traffic between Woodkilton and Torbolton roads to allow for the police investigation.

Firefighters remained on

scene for several hours to assist with traffic control, as the scene became quite busy.

In its release, Ottawa Fire Services advise residents to remember the following points.

“Vehicles not involved in a collision are to yield right for emergency vehicles trying to access the scenes and the persons requiring assistance.

“If you are the first person at a motor vehicle incident, please approach the scene only if it is safe to do so. It is advisable to remain in your vehicle on fast moving highways and roadways as passing motorists may not see you if you exit your vehicle.

“Call 9-1-1 as soon as it is safe to do so. Remember, you are our eyes and ears to the emergency.

“Our dispatch staff will ask questions to help best locate the caller and assess the conditions surrounding the emergency. We encourage you to remain calm, answer the dispatcher’s questions and to stay on the line until advised to hang up.”

A former high-ranking local conservative has regularly posted racist, sexist, and antiMuslim comments on his Twitter account for years now.

Metroland Media learned on July 12 that Jean-Paul (J.P.) Dorion counted among his followers prominent Ottawa MPPs Lisa MacLeod and Jack MacLaren, and the PC Party of Ontario. In just the past few months, @dorionhawk has tweeted racist opinions such as: • “No loss ... repeat criminal, waste of flesh” in response to a black man killed by Baton Rouge police; • “Booze always a factor with natives” in response to a story about accidental aboriginal youth deaths; • “Dirty n!#*er kills Americans w/refugees” about refugees with active TB being sent to Idaho; • “Another Mexican criminal in Canada” about Mexico’s president dining with Justin Trudeau.

Sexist tweets over the same period include: • “Typical african american animal” in response to a viral video showing white officers violently arresting a black woman; • “New symbol for transgender washroom” linked to a photo of Michelle Obama; • “Disband corrupt UN & send entitled

bitch home” in relation to a story about climate change chief Christiana Figueres entering race to head UN. Anti-Muslim tweets include several linked to Barack Obama. Catholics are not spared.

A favourite topic is city politicians and the police going soft on criminals. Dorion also defended MacLaren during the misogynistic joke scandal that made national headlines this spring. It was one of the few tweets that wouldn’t prove offensive to most people.

According to Dorion’s LinkedIn account, he is a Carleton-Mississippi Mills PC Riding Association director (which is MacLaren’s riding) since 2011 to present, and former president and vice-president of the Carleton-Mississippi Mills Federal Conservative Riding Association, once held by Gordon O’Connor. He is also a well-known director of the West Carleton Fish and Game Club.

MacLeod, MPP for Nepean-Carleton, condemned the tweets and has since removed Dorion from her list of followers.

“Up until today I followed 3,523 people on Twitter. Now I am down to 3,522,” MacLeod said. “Tweets like these are uncalled for and unhelpful during these serious times.”

Reached by telephone at his work, Dorion said he is no longer with the PC Party of Ontario. He refused to deny that the tweets are racist and sexist.

“I am no longer affiliated with them,” Dorion said. “I have no time for you.” He

Weather proves challenging for Harbour Days Year Warranty

The weather took a turn for the worse on the main day of Fitzroy Harbour Days, but many festival-goers stuck it out anyway.

After a pleasant launch on Thursday evening, Friday night was a bit cooler for the second day of the festival.

The kids’ bike parade went ahead through the village. The turnout was small, but children and parents were game to take part.

The 3-pitch tournament kicked off with both ball fields occupied throughout the evening. There was also live music from Wilson and Delcourt to wrap up the night.

Unfortunately for the festival, but fortunately for area farmers, the rains came on Saturday, July 8. They cancelled most of the ball tournament (some brave players gutted it out with hoodies and umbrellas) and the teen volleyball. Nevertheless, the on-and-off downpour didn’t stop all the fun with washer games under the gazebo, face-painting, a barbecue and the bar still options.

As well, the fourth annual ‘Choose 2 Live’ Lisa’s 5-km run in memory of Lisa Roesler went ahead before the rain hit.

Organizers sent out a thank you to all the volunteers, grounds and maintenance crew, and the “die-hard Harbour Days-goers who stuck it out despite the rain.”

As his party’s outreach ambassador to a number of ethnic communities, MacLaren said his favourite aspect of the job – aside from helping those who reach out – is meeting new people.

“It really is the people.

The ethnic folks have been great. You know, I’m a rural Ontario white farm boy and so I was never exposed to all these different ethnic groups,” he said. “One of the great things of my job is I meet all these different kinds of people who come from different places, different religions, and I always find I meet great people.”

A proponent of city deamalgamation and lower taxes, MacLaren said government needs to do better job of helping people, specifically those with autism, mental health issues and seniors.

“Corporate welfare, I would say, should stop,” he

said. “Businesses need the freedom to do what they need to do and be creative and innovative and not be taxed to death, but as far as giving companies money to build plants or factories or hire people, I think that’s a false economy. And when we have autistic kids and mental health and seniors needing help, those dollars should go there first.

“In some cases we have the greatest country in the world but we wouldn’t be judged too well the way we look at autism, mental health or some of our seniors. It’s getting worse, not better.”

Asked if he’s ready to face criticism in seeking renomination, MacLaren said he wants to continue helping his constituents, doing a job he enjoys.

“The criticism is losing steam, shall we say. Time passes and I think we’ve addressed that problem.”

Cuts show how bloated city management is

A

new city manager is in charge over at city hall, and now there is a major restructuring going on.

The first major move of that restructuring was rubber stamped last week when council voted unanimously to axe the city’s two deputy city clerks and deputy city manager positions after a briefing by city manager Steve Kanellakos.

While Kanellakos says more is to come to find efficiencies in the city’s operations, for now what the restructuring means is that a dozen management positions are being shed in order to streamline operations.

The plan, as outlined by Kanellakos, will cut “senior leader” positions down to nine, from 21.

That the city administration now believes it can hack away at “senior leader” positions so that the number drops to nine from 21 begs the question, how did the number of senior positions balloon up to 21 in the first place?

Who was watching and keeping the city’s administration from getting so bloated?

At the briefing at city hall, Kanellakos said the changes would save the city $2.7 million over the next two years. The city will have to pay out $1.29 million in severance.

Kanellakos said he talked to 2,600 of the city’s 17,000-person workforce in the two months leading up to unveiling his plan, which has the full backing of Mayor Jim Watson.

According to Kanellakos, this is the first step and he will be working with the new senior leadership team who will be responsible for the next steps to come.

“This includes a review of other levels of the organization to find opportunities to consolidate and streamline,” his memo to council reads.

That sounds good, but what the real impact will be going forward is still in doubt. Most of the people being shifted out of these senior positions appear to already have other jobs at city hall to fall back on.

And, of course, all residents of Ottawa should keep a close watch on city hall to make sure that as time goes by, the administration doesn’t start to fatten up yet again.

n July 6, Muslims around the world celebrated Eid al-Fitr, the end of the Ramadan fast. I was invited to meet one of Canada’s newest families at their upper level duplex near downtown Ottawa.

As I walked slowly across the street, I could hear the sound of laughter echoing from the open window. I double-checked the address, uncertain that the family of four could be responsible for these festive sounds.

She invited me into the small living room, where her two young daughters, age six and four, were laughing and playing in their summer dresses.

expected to arrive in Canada by the end of the year; some government assisted refugees, but many through private sponsorship.

Time will tell how easily the newcomers will integrate into Canadian society. Private sponsorship is a beacon concept, however. A government evaluation has shown that privately-sponsored refugees acquire language skills more quickly, enter the workforce sooner and have better health outcomes than government assisted refugees.

Observing Jana’s family and their interactions with four of their sponsors, it’s easy to see how having an on-the-ground Canadian team dedicated to help them navigate the future can boost their success. One of the sponsors comes late to our Eid gathering and thrusts a fistful of coins into each of the young girls’ hands.

“Eid Mubarek,” she says. Another runs ahead, as we walk to the local playground, helping the girls cross the street.

the family to medical and dental appointments, open bank accounts and register both the adults and children for school. Since then, Jana tells me, there is someone visiting many times per week. I tell her I’ve heard some Syrian families have complained that their sponsors are overbearing. I ask her if it’s too much.

“It’s not too much,” says Jana.

“We’ve asked for it. We want them here with us.”

Jana and I converse with ease as we walk with her husband, the children and four of their Canadian sponsors to the park. She tells me about the day they arrived in Ottawa, following a sleepless few hours in a Toronto airport hotel and a 14-hour plane journey from Beirut.

They were disoriented, unsure what their next steps would be – would they take a bus somewhere? Find shelter?

Her husband said he was nervous, but Jana says she was not nervous. “I told him not everyone is lost here like in Lebanon.”

A few minutes later they spotted their name, written in Arabic, on a sign. A man on a galloping horse wouldn’t know the difference “You realize your tablecloth is a little wrinkly. Want me to run the iron over it quickly for you?”

“Nah. A man on a galloping horse …”

Perhaps it means something that my family uses that expression so often, we don’t even bother to finish it.

A man on a galloping horse would be travelling past so quickly, he would not notice that my tablecloth has not been ironed.

Besides, the plates and platters will soon cover the wrinkles after dinner is served.

I do not aspire to be the type of farmwife who has everything just so. I am comfortable with a bit of untidiness.

I know the foundation is cleaned. I cleaned it myself.

I enjoy cleaning the house – it is my stress relief. I tend to do more of a quick pass-over than a thorough scrubbing, however.

Eventually the Farmer waits until I’m gone away on a girls’ night or something and he cleans the floors the way his mother taught him.

He moves the furniture and uses an entire bottle of floor wax.

The mop is stiff like a brick when he is finished, and the floors gleam so that you can see your smile reflected back at you. Bless him.

If you happen to notice me scrubbing floors at odd hours of the day, i.e. 2 a.m., stand back. Give me plenty of room. Chances are I am extremely ticked off about something and that is why I

am scouring so fervently.

My garden is doing very well this year. That is one area I am not slacking off.

I’m staying on top of the weeds, so they don’t get a chance to choke anything out or to take over the garden altogether.

Deep cleaning of the house can wait ‘til winter – I have to keep tabs on the veggies and perennial beds.

Usually while I am outside weeding, I take a moment to check on our old sheepdog, Chelsea. I make sure she has clean, dry hay in her house and her water bucket is freshly filled.

This morning I stepped around the stable to her yard, out of habit. She is no longer there to greet me. At the age of 15, she lay down for the last time.

Fifteen is a good, ripe age for a border collie. They don’t typically live past 10 or 12 years of age, I am told.

Notice of Intention to Designate The City of Ottawa on July 13, 2016 established its intention to designate the former Overbrook Public School, 149 King George Street, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage value.

Description of Property The former Overbrook Public School, 149 King George Street, is a two-storey rectangular building clad in red brick and constructed in three phases in 1916, 1947 and 1955. The building is located on the corner of King George and Quill Streets in the Overbrook neighbourhood.

Heritage Value The former Overbrook Public School has design value as a simple example of the Collegiate Gothic style, popular for school construction across North America from 1900-1930. A late variation of the Gothic Revival style, the Collegiate Gothic style was inspired by the British universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Features of the building typical of the style include the use of red brick and limestone, symmetrical façades with evenly spaced windows and the decorative stone details. The building also has physical value because it was designed in anticipation of later additions; it was an asymmetric two room school, which remained until 1947, when a large L-shaped addition was built to accommodate the first children of the baby boom.

Overbrook Public School has historic value for its association with the development of public schools in former Gloucester Township in the early 20th century. Constructed beginning in 1916, Overbrook Public School is one of the earliest remaining buildings in Overbrook. The building has associative value as an example of the work of two Ottawa architectural firms. Millson and Burgess, responsible for the design of the original building in 1916, was a prolific architectural firm in Ottawa in the early 20th century, designing a variety of buildings including churches, libraries and private residences in Ottawa and the surrounding area. Architect Walter Sylvester designed the 1947 addition to the building. Sylvester was a long time Overbrook resident and trained under celebrated Ottawa architect W.E. Noffke in the early 20th century. In the 1940s, Sylvester designed additions to several schools in former Gloucester Township.

Prominently located on a corner, Overbrook Public School has contextual value as a local landmark which has served as a community hub and serves as a reminder of the community’s early development.

OBJECTIONS Any person wishing to object to this designation may do so by letter, outlining the reasons for the objection and any other relevant information. This letter must be received by the Clerk of the City of Ottawa either by registered mail or personally delivered within 30 days of the publication of this notice.

When a notice of objection has been received, the Council of the City of Ottawa will refer the matter to the Conservation Review Board for a hearing and a report.

City of Ottawa Light Rail Transit will only help a minority To the Editor: Thank you very much for expressing how the City of Ottawa is making it difficult for people going to work or appointments, and tourists as well, to get into the downtown core and find a place to park their car.

The narrow streets are being made narrower by being reduced by bicycle lanes. For example, O’Connor St. from First Avenue to Fifth Avenue now has no stopping.

What do visitors do with their car and how do delivery people deposit their goods.

Drivers go round and round the block trying to get a place to park their vehicle.

Now the homeowners who live on the side streets always have someone parking in front of their home.

Even those who will be living near light rail stations will need a place to put their visitor’s car.

Nature provides stimulation for all of our senses.

Twinflower, Trailing Arbutus and other wildflowers delight our nose. Scarlet Tanagers, American Goldfinches and other songbirds please our eye. And an astounding diversity of sound seduces our ear.

In recent days, the at-times insufferable heat has enticed Cicada nymphs to abandon their subterranean haunts and climb up trees where as adults their ear-piercing whine fills the air. Soon a symphony of Field Crickets, Katydids and their relatives will serenade the night.

And although much of summer’s bird sounds is diminishing rapidly, a few species including American Robins still greet the dawn with song.

The songs of most songbirds are melodious and pleasing to the ear. The same, however, cannot be said for the vocalizations produced by much larger birds such as Great Blue Herons and Common Ravens. But to be fair to those species, their grunts, croaks and screams, unlike the pleasing offerings of songbirds, are not designed to impress potential mates.

Marshes are extremely rich habitats that harbour a great number of fascinating animals. The best way to visit a marsh is by canoe (or, reportedly, a kayak, for I have never been in one).

A canoe allows you to silently float by a marsh’s edge, which is the most dynamic part of the habitat. But don’t be surprised that you will hear much more than you will see,

for many of its fascinating inhabitants are very elusive.

Of all birds living in marshes, rails are the most unusual. Locally, there are four species: Sora, Virginia Rail, American Coot and Common Gallinule.

Coots are the least common, and are the only rails to possess toes with large flap-like lobes. The lobes allow coots to move through submerged vegetation by opening on the backstroke to provide a paddle-like surface and closing on the return stroke to slide through the vegetation.

Other rails have extremely elongated toes for walking on cattail mats and floating vegetation.

Rails’ bodies are compressed from side to side, a shape that allows them to walk between thick cattails.

Rails are also noteworthy for their odd sounds. Soras utter shrill notes and a high-pitched whinny. Virginia Rails, the most common species locally, produce grunts that start fast and slow down, not unlike a giant coin rolling on its edge until it stops.

An odd “kid-ik, kid-ik, kid-ik” is also in their vocabulary.

Common Gallinules make even stranger, cackling sounds described by the famed American ornithologist William Brewster as “so varied and complex that it seems hopeless to attempt a full description of them. Speaking generally, the notes were all loud, harsh and discordant, and nearly all curiously henlike.”

If you are lucky, you will see a rail make a brief appearance at the edge of a marsh. More likely, however, you will hear its odd vocalizations arise from somewhere behind deep inside the cattails.

To the uninitiated, those bizarre sounds undoubtedly evoke an even stranger image of what their maker looks like!

Rural funding available for fairs, farmers’ markets in Ottawa The City of Ottawa’s Rural Association Partnership Program is accepting applications for a second round of funding.

The deadline for requests is Aug. 19 at 4 p.m. The program is strictly for those operating a rural fair, farmer’s market or rural business. Those successful intheir bids can be eligible for funding up to $7,500.

The objectives of the program are: • To provide project-based funding that supports the main priorities for rural organizations.

OPP seeks auxiliary members The Lanark County Detachment of the OPP is seeking qualified applicants for its auxiliary unit.

The auxiliary program is a highly structured environment and members are expected to maintain the same high standards as the OPP. Auxiliary members are volunteers and as part of their role may assist regular OPP officers in a number of duties.

Applicants must be able to commit the time and effort required of the program, which is a minimum 10 hours per month of patrol with a regular officer and six hours of in-service training per month.

Applicants must be at least 18, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and a high school graduate. Interested persons can print out the application from the OPP website at http://www. opp.ca.

Ward 5 West Carleton-March Agri 150 The Agri 150 program was recently launched. This is a new program that will be stewarded by Just Food to boost rural tourism during the celebrations of Canada’s 150th birthday.

From January to December 2017, the Agri 150 program will provide new ways to experience rural Ottawa and events will take place in all the rural wards including West Carleton-March. More than 20 unique one-day outdoor events will take place to allow residents and tourists to discover our rural communities during all four seasons.

Some examples of Agri 150 experiences will include: • Wine & Words Tour: Visiting local wineries to sample area wines paired with local cheeses and other canapes.

In partnership with the Ottawa International Writers Festival, at each stop, a local author or storyteller will entertain with passages that reflect the rural landscape and way of life.

• Eco-Tour: This cycling tour will showcase tastes and innovations in environmental sustainability in rural Ottawa, including an off-grid farm, a conservation area, solar installations and greenhouse vegetable production.

At each stop, participants will enjoy locally produced treats while interacting with expert tour guides.

• Rural Fair Experiences: Working with farmers, producers and growers, rural fairs highlight local history and current food and farm culture. Agri 150 will ensure through marketing initiatives that residents and visitors alike will learn about rural resources and celebrate the distinct rural nature of the community in a fun and interactive way.

More details about the Agri 150 program and ticket information will be available this fall.

Community Partnership Minor Capital Program The Community Partnership Minor Capital Program is an initiative available for minor capital improvements to city-owned parks, recreation and cultural facilities on a cost-sharing basis with community groups. Examples include: play equipment, basketball courts, park furniture, tree planting, landscape improvements, minor community facility improvements, etc. Projects on school board land and other public lands that are accessible to the general public may also be eligible.

How does the program work? City matches the community contribution for projects on City property to a maximum of $7,500 or 50% of the total cost of the project. Deadline to submit an application is September 1, 2016 and more details are outlined on ottawa.ca.

Fran Bryerton has a passion for animals and she’s doing what she can to help.

Bryerton, who lives just off Dwyer Hill Road in West Carleton, is selling more than 200 pieces of jewelry with the proceeds going towards the Soi Dog Foundation.

“I would say about $500 have been sold,” she said, a couple weeks ago. “It’s hardly made a dent in the jewelry.”

The jewelry was donated and includes everything from brooches, Pandora compatible beads, bracelets, rings, earrings, necklaces and more.

Soi Dog Foundation is a dog help organization in Thailand, the United States, Australia, the U.K., France, Canada and Hol-

land and it is a cause that Bryerton wants to help. It is also an organization that is run solely on donations. ’SAVAGE TRADE’

Electric vehicle charging network ready next March Electric vehicle drivers will be able to travel confidently Ontario is building electric vehicle charging stations at over 250 locations across the province to help reduce greenhouse gas pollution and fight climate change.

The closest proposed stations to West Carleton are in Kanata, Carleton Place and Arnprior.

The province is working with 24 publicand private-sector partners to create an unprecedented network of public charging electric vehicle stations in cities, along highways, at workplaces and at various public places across Ontario. The entire network will be in service by March 31, 2017.

The province’s $20-million investment under Ontario’s Green Investment Fund

will expand charging infrastructure across the province and will help address “range anxiety,” a common concern of consumers regarding the distance electric vehicles can travel compared to traditional vehicles.

Building a more robust network of public chargers across Ontario allows electric vehicle owners to plan longer trips knowing that charging stations are as readily available as gas stations. With the new network of stations, electric vehicle drivers will be able to travel confidently from Windsor to Ottawa or from Toronto to North Bay and within and around major urban centres.

“It (solar lighting) could still happen one day,” said Mayor Louis Antonakos.

The new lighting fixtures will be all LED full cutoff – decorative fixtures with some control capabilities so lighting can be adjusted during fireworks or performances in the park. The work is expected to start this fall.

I am purchasing a new home. I heard from my real estate agent that I would have to get title insurance. Is this necessary?

Title insurance has been around for the last 15 years and is used in almost all residential real estate purchases, especially those involving mortgages.

What is title insurance and how much does it cost?

Title insurance is an insurance policy covering a variety of risk involving the purchase and ownership of real estate.

The policy coverage lasts for the entire period of ownership and is, in general, a cheaper option than having a real estate lawyer perform full title and off-title searches so as to provide a legal opinion on title. Mortgage providers insist on either a lawyer providing them with an opinion on title (and all the performance of searches that go with it) or to have the transaction title insured. An average one-time premium for title insurance ranges from $300 to $400 for a policy insuring a new owner and the mortgage provider.

What does it cover?

Title insurance covers a variety of issues associated with purchasing a home, such as conflicting ownership claims, spousal claims, title defects, encroachments and

subsequent removal of structures, unpaid property taxes and utilities, by-law infringements, such as renovations without a building permit, and many other issues. Some title insurance companies also cover errors made by a real estate lawyer representing a purchaser.

Common Exclusions The most common exclusions (i.e. not covered) by title insurance are environmental issues and soil contamination, title issues known to the purchaser or their lawyer prior to closing and aboriginal claims. Title insurance only covers issues that crystallized prior to closing but were discovered following the closing. For example, renovations made to your home without a work permit after you have moved in would be excluded.

Home buyers in Ontario purchase their new homes without any obligation on the seller to disclose issues with the property. Title insurance is a very efficient way to protect your investment and deal with any surprises that may come up after your purchase.

Dunrobin’s Cameron Smedley to face ‘relentless waters’ in Rio Melissa Murray

Local paddlers Cameron Smedley and Michael Tayler will face unyielding waters when they compete at the Rio Olympics, which begin on Aug. 5.

“The course is relentless and there’s so many features,” Tayler said.

“In Rio there are probably 40 or 50 different waves that you have to remember and everything is very unique. It makes it a lot of fun, but also makes it a lot of work to see how the water reacts.”

Tayler, from Westboro, and Smedley, from Dunrobin, leave for the Games on July 22 to begin their stay in the Olympic Village. The Games are Tayler’s second – he competed in London in 2012, finishing 20th in the men’s kayak slalom event.

This is Smedley’s first Games; he’ll compete in the canoe slalom.

This will be the pair’s third time travelling to Rio, preparing for the Olympics.

Since their first trip, the course has been modified, cleaning up some inconsistent features.

“It’s a little bit nicer to paddle now, and I feel more comfortable on the course,” Smedley said.

It’s the kind of course Tayler prefers.

“It’s a lot of fun to paddle there, and it’s really playful. I went down for the first time in March and wasn’t a huge fan of it – they made some changes, and now it’s just awesome,” he said.

That’s exactly where Tayler slid into his first kayak 16 years ago.

Now he’s heading to his second Olympics.

He said he’s learned a lot in the four years between Games and has been treating every day on the water as a competition day.

“A lot of the time that means not taking it too seriously; usually I’m pretty light hearted before the race. Most of the time I’m

hamming it up in the start eddy and kind of just having fun and when I do that I’m not nervous and I race my best.”

He’s going in hoping to bring some hardware back to Canada.

“I can’t go in and say that’s not the goal. It really comes down to the feeling of that race and if I feel like I’ve performed and done what I was able to do on that day, I’ll be satisfied,” he said.

While Smedley is a little more hesitant to say he’s hoping for a medal – saying he’s hoping for a clean and consistent run – Tayler knows it could be in the cards.

“Cameron’s being really modest here. He was a bronze medallist at the test event, so I think we can see big things from him,” he said. Smedley also won silver at the Pan American Games in 2015.

Concerns about the Zika virus, contracted via bites from infected mosquitoes, still plague the upcoming competitions, and Smedley said Canadian athletes are listening closely to advisories from the Canadian Olympic Committee.

“Of the water sports, I think we have the best-case scenario because it’s a closed loop, so they are able to control the water quality a lot better than the lagoon and bay area,” Smedley said, addressing those Zika concerns.

For his first Games, Smedley’s not quite sure what to expect, except bigger crowds and more noise during competitions.

“It’s a whole different ball game than the world championships and world cup,” he said. “I’ll have to juggle with that.”

It’s a far cry from growing up in canoes and going on trips with his family – his brother, sister and mom will be attending the Games to support him.

“We’ve always been canoe-tripping. We have pictures where I’m just stuffed up into the bow of a canoe going out to Algonquin Park,” Smedley said.

The Olympic stage is one of the biggest for athletes and both are looking forward to all the Games have to offer, but competing will surely be the highlight for both Smedley and Tayler.

“It’s the big dream. The big goal that very few people can actually do,” Tayler said.

Tourtiere meatballs with maple-cranberry glaze a great appetizer Tourtiere, a savoury Quebeçois meat pie, has become a dinner must-have for many across Canada. Here we’ve incorporated the flavours into easy-to-make meatballs and added a cranberry glaze for festive noshing.

Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes Baking time: 20 minutes Makes about 42 meatballs Preparation instructions: Meatballs • 8 oz (250 g) mushrooms • 1/2 cup (125 mL) coarsely chopped onion • 1-1/2 lb (750 g) lean ground beef • 1-1/2 tsp (7 mL) each dried sage leaves, thyme leaves and celery salt • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each ground allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg • 3/4 cup (175 mL) packed mashed potato (1 potato) Glaze • 1 cup (250 mL) smooth jellied cranberry sauce • 1/4 cup (50 mL) each barbecue sauce and water • 2 tbsp (25 mL) maple syrup In food processor, pulse mushrooms and onion until evenly ground, stopping often to scrape down side. Place in large bowl; add

beef, sage, thyme, celery salt, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Add potato; mix well with your hands.

Shape into approximately 42 meatballs 1-1/2 inches (2.5 cm).

Arrange racks in top and bottom third of oven. Spray or oil two large rimmed baking sheets. Place meatballs on baking sheet.

Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven, switching racks half way through, until meatballs are brown and firm to the touch, about 20 minutes.

Let stand on baking sheets for three minutes. Remove to large serving bowl.

Meanwhile, in medium skillet, over medium-low heat, combine cranberry, barbecue sauce, water and maple syrup, stirring often, until melted and fairly smooth.

If desired, stir in more water, a tablespoon (15 mL) at a time.Pour over meatballs and stir gently to coat. Serve with toothpicks.

Tip: Make meatballs ahead, bake and cool on sheets; refrigerate in sealed container up to three days or freeze. Warm meatballs in microwave for seven minutes.

Prepare glaze as above; pour over meatballs, stir to coat. Serve warm.

Solid hitting secured last weekend’s championship game in Fitzroy Harbour for the Springbrook Royals.

The squirt team of 11- and 12-year-olds from a small town north of Belleville defeated Napanee Express 16-9, with Westport Storm securing third spot in the 11team tournament.

The host West Carleton Flyers started the event with their best game of the year, according to coach Adam Brown. They convincingly won 6-2 against Campbellford Cougars in front of a large crowd that stayed for the opening ceremonies, which included Mayor Jim Watson.

The Flyers’ second game saw the team lose to the Royals. The game

was 5-4 going into the fifth, but the very strong Royals team had two big innings to take the game 14-4.

While a bad finish was the downfall for West Carleton in their second game, it was a tough start that put them behind the eight ball in the

third game.

Stouffville Storm scored four runs in the first inning on costly West Carleton defensive miscues, and held on for a 9-5 win.

Other participating teams were Micksburg Twins, Laurentian Valley, Oshawa BBs,

Greely Eagles, and Tweed Longhorns.

“Overall, the kids played well and had a lot of fun,” Brown said.

Next up for the West Carleton Flyers is the Squirt “B” provincials in Cobourg Aug. 13-14.

Proceeds of the tournament go to the Gil Read Memorial Foundation to help young people afford to participate in sports. Gil Read was a legend in local fastball circles and his family helps organize the tournament.

Several Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL) teams usually enter the tournament, as well as regulars from the U.S., Quebec and Ontario.

Both West Carleton based entries in the GOLF, the West Carleton Electric (Fitzroy) and Ottawa Valley A’s (Carp), will be playing in the tournament.

Last year’s winners were the Kanata Storm, while the Micksburg Twins of the GOFL finished first two years ago.

A beer garden and food booths are set up cater to the large crowds the tournament tends to attract.

Golf tourney to support the McKnights Scott Campbell

Dunrobin Meat & Grocery’s annual golf tournament, now in its 13th year, will raise funds to help the McKnight family of Constance Bay deal with young Liam’s battle against Davet Syndrome.

The 18-hole tournament at the Irish Hills Golf and Country Club in Carp is scheduled for Aug. 20 with a 11 a.m. shotgun start.

Typically, the funds raised at the tournament go to local families in need, and the event usually always sells out. Last year, the golfers supported Tysen Lefebvre and his mission to raise a million dollars for Make-a-Wish.

This time around, the tournament will be for Liam McKnight and his family.

The McKnight family were chosen as West Carleton Review’s Newsmaker of the Year in 2015.

The Constance Bay family, which includes mother Mandy and her husband Dave, their son Liam and daughters Maya and Ava, have promoted awareness of the rare condition that afflicts Liam.

As well, they were in the spotlight when they helped successfully lobby Health Canada to reverse its position on medical marijuana, allowing users to ingest the drug in ways other than smoking.

Dravet Syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation in the SCN1A gene, which stops Liam’s body from generating and transmitting electrical signals, which in turns causes seizures.

He would get multiple seizures during the day that would take hours from which to recover.

The results from taking cannabis oil has drastically reduced his seizures and improved his life.

The McKnight family has also been assisting families around the world dealing with the same problem.

The cost to play in the golf tournament is $100 for those who book a spot before this Friday, July 22 and $125 after.

Cuts for Kids I had the absolute pleasure of attending an amazing event at the Morrison Gardens Community House. Cuts For Kids is a non-profit foundation that provides haircuts for financially disadvantaged and homeless youth. The event was filled with organized games, a BBQ, and free haircuts for the children. I was truly inspired by the work of the organizers, and of course the hairdressers that volunteered their time and talent. Thank you so much to the foundation for the amazing job that you all do for our Ottawa community!

Army Celebrations This past week I was honoured to attend two celebrations for the Canadian Army. First, I attended the retirement ceremony for Lieutenant-Colonel Frances Chilton-MacKay, a living legend in the Canadian Armed Forces music scene, and the first female Director of Music for the Governor General’s Foot Guards. Second, I was delighted to represent both the Minister of Veterans Affairs and the Minister of National Defence at the Change of Command Parade as Lt.-Gen. Paul Wynnyk assumed command of the Canadian Army on Thursday from Lt.-Gen. Marquis Hainse at a ceremony on Parliament Hill. We have so much to be proud of in the Canadian Army and it will continue to play such a critical role for our Nation, and our contribution to NATO. CENGN Summer Jobs I had previously announced that the Federal Government has provided funding for 290 summer jobs (totaling $698,943) in Kanata-Carleton. I was pleased to visit Canada’s Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN). This year the not-for-profit organization received over $19,000 as part of the Summer Jobs Program. Every year CENGN brings in approximately 40 of Canada’s most tech-savvy student interns in the fields of project management, marketing and engineering in the Digital ICT network space. This is a great example of our government’s commitment to investing in our Riding, and our future.

New addition to church pew was very entertaining Our family sat in the pew next to the very front of the church, which I always thought was a shame because I could never see a thing going on behind me.

Mother forbade us to turn around in our seats, and my sister Audrey said the whole back of the church could fall in behind us, and Mother would expect us to keep our eyes peeled straight ahead.

I thought the church service long and boring. The time dragged by, and even though Audrey said it was a real sin to let my mind wander away from what the minister was saying, I had no idea what he was talking about.

And so it was with more than a bit of joy the day a very elderly lady moved from the back to the other end of our pew. Mother said she had lost a lot of her hearing, and through necessity had to move closer to the minister. My brother Emerson said she didn’t know how lucky she was, whatever that meant.

I hardly knew the old woman, but I was delighted she was close at hand, because now I had something else to occupy my mind.

That first Sunday, she was already sitting in her seat by the time we piled in beside her.

The seats curved, so I had no trouble looking over in her direction and giving her a good going over.

She was like a little bird … a wren ... or maybe a robin. She sat with her hands folded in her lap on top of her opened Bible.

Mother nodded in her direction, but the old woman either had no desire to be friendly, or there was something wrong with her eyesight as well.

It looked like someone had just propped her in the seat. In fact, I wondered if that was what had happened, and I wished at once, that we had been there to see her come in.

Emerson hissed he thought she may have passed away. Mother poked him on the knee to hush him up.

But then she opened her purse to take out a little lacy hanky, and a strong whiff of lavender perfume floated over the pew causing Emerson to raise his hand to his mouth and

looked over at us, and issued what passed for a smile.

When the service was over, Mother reached across and extended a hand. Then the old lady opened her purse again, and another whiff of lavender settled around us. She took a nickel out of her purse and handed it to me, and said it was for being so good in church. I was dumbfounded, and Emerson pushed in beside me, but there was no more money in the offing.

And then Mother, to my horror, beamed at me after I said my thanks, and told me to go and put it in the offering plate at the front of the church. I couldn’t believe my ears!

The old woman was beaming at me, and I knew I had to do what Mother said, and hand over the nickel. A whole nickel!

With a heavy heart I went up to the plate and dropped it in. It was the fastest money I had ever earned, and it was the shortest time I had ever had a nickel in my possession!

Her skin looked like it had been drawn tightly across her face, and there was no doubt about it, she was going to give me plenty to think about during the long service, and I was secretly delighted, I confess, that she had lost her hearing and had to move up to the front of the church.

I soon realized the sinfulness of my thoughts, and asked a quick forgiveness from God for harbouring such ideas.

I had no idea what the minister was talking about that day. I was too engrossed in the old lady in the seat beside us.

It wasn’t long before she started to doze off and yet she never moved a fraction of an inch in the pew. But her eyelids slipped down, fluttered open, and then closed again for good. Her eyes looked exactly like a chicken that had fallen asleep in the hot sun; almost transparent, with no eyelashes, and white as the driven snow.

She flew awake when the organist let out a blast for the last hymn. I must say it startled me too, and for the first time, the old lady
