Thieves steal tools, vandalize community centre bar Jessica Cunha
jessica.cunha@metroland.com
Thieves broke into a construction trailer at the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Centre on July 13 and vandalized the bar area inside the centre. The people involved stole an electrician’s job box out of the trailer and a set of keys to an old job site, said Tyler Coyles, carpenter and acting supervisor of the site. It’s the second time the trailer has been broken into. The stolen toolbox is described as black, 3-feet by 4-feet, with wheels and a handle. The culprits also gained access to the centre’s bar area through
a roof hatch and used what appeared to be a sledge hammer to destroy the bar’s steel door. Once inside, they rifled through the cash register and smashed beer bottles on the ground, said Ian Glen, president of the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association. “They were going after the cash, but there was no cash,” said Len Russell, with the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association. “The door was the worst part – it’s a steel door and they really kicked it in.” However, it could have been worse, he said. “They could have gotten in here (to the new addition).”
Ottawa police were notified about the break-in and a report was filed. Police were able to get a “good footprint” off the bar’s steel door and a few names were given to the police for questioning, said Russell and Glen. A request for comment from police hadn’t been answered as of press time. The break-in hasn’t slowed the crew down though. Work is continuing on the new addition with a planned opening day of Sept. 14. Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to contact police, said Glen.
