Boy drowns in Ottawa River

Young visitor from Toronto pulled into current at Constance Bay John Carter

john.carter@metroland.com

Constance Bay’s idyllic beach has a dangerous side. That was driven home Saturday when a 10-year-old boy from a family visiting from Toronto drowned in its waters. The boy got into trouble while wading or swimming in the Ottawa River off the Point beach just before 4 p.m. Despite efforts of his 21-year-old brother to assist him, he disappeared under the water.

Several 911 calls alerted police, who with the help of Ottawa firefighters and paramedics, searched for the missing boy. It soon become apparent the rescue attempts had become a recovery effort. At 10:47 p.m., the Ottawa Police Service duty inspector tweeted that the Ottawa Police dive team had recovered the body of the missing boy. “Sad and tragic incident,” concluded the message, which was retweeted by West Carleton-March city councillor Eli El-Chantiry. Former staffers demand apology from MPP Jack MacLaren Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

Two former staff members in CarletonMississippi Mills MPP Jack MacLaren’s office say he was fully aware of false testimonials that were placed on his website. The testimonials were removed following media reports that they were stock photos of people from around the world and not constituents here in the riding. MacLaren apologized, but later was quoted as saying staff members – who have now moved on – made the decision.

He claimed former staffers were responsible for the photos, but has what he termed superior people in place working in his office now. “We, his former employees, wish to set the record straight,” Jessica Lauren Annis and Debbie Wilson penned in a letter to the editor published in the July 25 Toronto Star. “Both of the above statements are untrue, as MacLaren alone made the decision to use stock photographs; and, his former staff members are in no way inferior to his current staff members.” See APOLOGY, page 2

TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND

Jackpot! The Carp Fair held its last drive-in bingo of the year on Aug. 3. There were 500 cars in attendance and during the night there were a number of games played, including a quiz to find out who had been coming to the bingo the longest. Both Anne Beach and Jo Ann Crawford have played for more than 50 years (he bingo has been going for 57 years). Ronnie Bidgood, co-president of the fair presents each woman a Carp Fair jacket. For more on the bingo and the ‘slow down’ signs given out that evening, see pages 13, 39.
