Kinburn woman breathing easier Kinburn double-lung transplant on way to recovery, Hanna family thanks community for its support Scott Campbell

Kinburn’s Kathleen Hanna and her family will forever remember the date of April 6 because it was the day that Hanna received her double-lung transplant. On the transplant list for almost two months, the 22-year-old is now on the road to recovery and thankful for someone’s decision to be a donor and the community support that helped her through the ordeal. “I’m very lucky,” said Kathleen, about her wait. There are technical criteria to decide who gets a transplant, explained Kathleen’s mother, Julie, but the two simplest ones come down to blood match and size of the lungs. Kathleen needed the transplant as she had been dealing with cystic fibrosis since she was about four months old. For a time she
was able to manage the symptoms, even playing competitive soccer. It wasn’t until she was about 16 that the infections started to get worse. Cystic fibrosis is a defect gene that causes a thick build-up of mucus in the lungs and other organs. The CF website describes it as “the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure.” When Kathleen left for Toronto in February to await a transplant, her lung capacity was at 17 per cent and using a wheelchair with 24 hour oxygen. Today, her lung capacity sits at 87 per cent and the wheelchair and oxygen are gone. “Someone’s worst day was the best day of ours lives,” said Julie about the lung becoming available . “We thank the family for being selfless in their time of grief.”

Future firefighters at the Carp corn roast Cole and Kane Nielson try out one of the vehicles on display at Fire Station 64 in Carp on Aug. 18. The firefighters popular corn roast and barbecue had plenty of food from all-you-can-eat corn to hamburgers and pulled pork. The Nielson boys mother, Julie, said the family has been going to the corn roast for eight years to support the firefighters. For more on the event, see page 17.
