Sustain initiative now includes all West Carleton Jessica Cunha

A project that began in Constance Bay is expanding to cover the entire West Carleton area. The Sustain Constance Bay initiative attracted enough interest from outside the community that it is now Sustain West Carleton. “It’s taking the momentum that we started in Constance Bay and really expanding it,” said project co-ordinator Judi Varga-Toth. “We came to realize there are other really interesting projects and interested people throughout West Carleton.” Food security is the major initiative the group has been working on and starting Sept. 12 a food market will be held every Saturday for five weeks. “We’ve got a community farmers market that is gearing up for a five-week pilot in the fall. The idea is to follow up on the initial market we did last summer with a lot more community support behind it,” said Varga-Toth. “We’re going to have lots available. We want to make sure there will be lots for people to pick from.”

Another group has started a “food forest,” looking at how to grow certain edible items in amongst the trees. It’s in the research phase, said Varga-Toth, adding the group is also encouraging people to learn how to grow their own food in their backyards. Two other areas of interest of Sustain West Carleton revolve around energy conservation and accessible transportation. The group is looking at hosting workshops in the fall about cost effective ways to lower energy bills, said Varga-Toth, while others are looking at transportation options for seniors and youth, as well as cyclists. “Some people are interested in doing work around energy conservation,” she said. “Others have talked about cycling infrastructure, ways to make cycling safer. We’re looking at holding an open house; what could we do to make transportation more accessible to people out here?” To get involved with Sustain West Carleton or for more information, email sustainwestcar leton@envirocentre.ca.
