Two years after the idea came about, the official ribbon was cut and the new wide doors thrown open on the Sandhills Project expansion on Sept. 3. The new addition at the
Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Centre never would have happened without a unique partnership with the city, the local councillor, volunteers and the 300 community members who donated to the project, said Ian Glen, president of the local community association. “Every little bit helped us on our way and we appreciated the $25 donation as much as we do the larger sums,” he said. Mayor Jim Watson and coun-
cillors Eli El-Chantiry, Marianne Wilkinson and Tim Tierney were on hand to celebrate the official opening, along with many local residents curious for a first look at the interiors of the new spaces. “We’re so thrilled,” said ElChantiry, adding some of the donors helped with the first addition as well as the second building. “There’s a lot of love, a lot of history. It couldn’t have happened without the community pulling together.” See NEXT STEPS, page 3

wasn’t a debate, but a chance for community members to meet the four candidates running in the newly formed Kanata-Carleton riding. Iman Sikande Hashmi said that seven to 10 per cent of Kanata’s population is Muslim, despite the lack of a mosque in the area, something he would eventually like to see.

He said from an Islamic faith-based perspective, people have a responsibility to take an interest in the community and country’s public affairs. “When we’re consulted, our faith teaches us to give good, sincere advice,” he said in the opening address to attendees. See CANDIDATES, page 41
