Firefighters to host 24-hour ladder sit at Carp Fair Sit-in goal to raise $10,000 for West Carleton War Memorial Jessica Cunha

jessica.cunha@metroland.com

West Carleton firefighters will sit atop a ladder for 24 hours to raise funds for the West Carleton War Memorial during the Carp Fair weekend. All the stations in District 6 will take part, with every firefighter donating two or more hours off their pay towards the fundraiser and each station will be represented during the sit-

in, said West Carleton fire chief Chris Burke. “We’re hoping to raise $10,000, he said. “I’m hoping we’ll be able to see the grass being torn up soon and get the memorial started prior to this year’s Remembrance Day. The war memorial will be constructed at the junction of Donald B. Munro Drive and Falldown Lane in Carp and will feature a statue of a life-size soldier at rest and reading a let-

ter from home. The statue will be set up at the base of the ladder during the fundraiser at the Carp Fair. “It’s just an opportunity for us to hopefully shed some light on the need for financing the war memorial, said Station 66 Captain Bill Bell. “They’re still not at their target yet. We thought we would raise awareness and collect funds. See LADDER, page 5
