The 153rd edition of the Carp Fair was officially opened at the annual ceremonial parade on Saturday, Sept. 24 in the centre ring of the fairgrounds. Fair goers joined dignitaries, board members and volunteers for the parade and ceremony around noon. Among those joining fair presidents Ronnie Bidgood and Tracey Zoobkoff to officially open the fair were Kanata-Carleton MP Karen McCrimmon, CarletonMississippi Mills MPP Jack MacLaren, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, West CarletonMarch Coun. Eli El-Chantiry and Kanata North Coun Marianne Wilkinson. Several award presentations were made. John Eastman received the Ontario Association of Agriculture Societies agricultural service diploma, Carson Hill was awarded the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions distinguished service award and the Wallace Armstrong Memorial Award was presented to Jamie Johnston of the Arnprior
Federation of Agriculture. McCrimmon, a resident of Carp, invited the entire nation to the Carp Fair in a recent speech in the House of Commons. “This is a celebration of community and the quality of life and standing together and teamwork,” she said, expressing her thanks to all those who come together to make the fair a success each year. “I want to thank you for the leadership you provide. If the rest of the country follows your example, we will be in good shape.” Al Argue and Bev Cowan, presidents of the 2004 Carp Fair, joined the current presidents and retiring general manager Joyce Trafford, to cut the ribbon. Argue and Cowan are responsible for bringing Bidgood and Zoobkoff on to the board. A number of the day’s speakers thanked Trafford for her many years of service. “I want to pay tribute to Joyce,” said Watson. “She has been the heart and soul of this fair. She deserves a big round of applause for such a wonderful job, setting the bar so high.”
