Body image is something many young females struggle with and a Carp teen is aiming to change that.

Kaitlyn Hemstreet launched the month-long Unapologetic Beauty Project, in partnership with her dance studio, on Nov. 15 to raise awareness about body image in society and to fund the creation of a toolkit for Ottawa-area schools to promote positive self-image.

“Body image has always been a part of my life; I’ve struggled with it since I was a little girl,” said the 17-year-old. “I couldn’t talk about it for years because I’d get very emotional. It wasn’t until this year that I could start talking about it.”

Hemstreet, a dancer with Dandelion Dance Studio, choreographed a routine relaying her own experience and struggle with body image.

Drainage work to proceed in the Bay Two issues around the construction of a new drainage system in Constance Bay have been fixed, said West Carleton-March Coun. Eli ElChantiry.

The councillor forwarded the West Carleton Review an email conversation between his office and city staff on the issues of the “rip-rap,” the large pile of rocks surrounding the opening of a drainage pipe onto the access lane near The Point restaurant, and the height of a maintenance hole.

“The maintenance hole height was reduced and is now flush to the

ground. The rip-rap footprint was reduced as well,” wrote Danny Palermo, the city’s project manager on the $1.6-million drainage and culvert system.

A number of photos were attached, showing the pile of rocks taking up about half the space it occupied previously, and a flatter surface where the maintenance hole is located.

El-Chantiry said he kept his promise to fix both areas and that work on the four points identified will proceed over the coming months.

The construction near The Point is scheduled to be completed by midDecember, while work on the other

three areas would begin in the spring with an expected finish by fall 2016.

Work on Bayview Drive near Sixth Avenue was supposed to wrap up this year, but the discovery of a utility cable has put that work on hold until the spring.

The other two points, located at Sunning Hill Crescent, Stiver Road and Bayview Drive, and Len Purcell and Bayview drives, also has utilities that need to be moved before work can start. Relocation of the cables will take place in the spring-summer, followed by the completion of the drainage work.

Unapologetic Beauty about ‘tearing down the myths’ Continued from page 1

The dance sparked the creation of the Unapologetic Beauty Project after it was performed to a full house at Algonquin Commons Theatre in June 2014 and the reaction from the crowd was overwhelming.

“The feedback was phenomenal; we were flooded,” said Hannah Beach, director of Dandelion Dance Studio, adding they received messages from women of all ages relating their own experiences with negative body image.

Beach’s studio takes on 12 young women from various backgrounds every year and the dancers create their own choreography around a subject that’s meaningful to them.

After the response to Hemstreet’s June performance, the studio applied for funding from Telus to bring the message to a wider audience. The 12 dancers are being filmed over six months while they host workshops and discuss body image, and finish creating the tool kit to be used in schools starting Sept.

“We’re trying to use the arts to shed light on supporting girls,

to celebrate all the different ways they’re beautiful,” said Beach. “It’s really important kids feel they don’t have to wait to grow up to make a difference – they’re able to make change in their communities right now while it’s relevant to them.

“I think that’s one of the reasons Kaitlyn’s project will be interesting to kids; it’s not created by an educator – it’s created by young girls.”

For Hemstreet, the experience has been cathartic as well as liberating.

“Unapologetic Beauty is about tearing down the myths perpetuated in media and popular culture around what real beauty means. Far too many girls walk around feeling they don’t measure up to an impossible standard,” she said.

Kaitlyn, a Grade 12 student at Bell High School, has always participated in sports – water polo, swimming, rugby and field hockey – but seeing thin models everywhere in the media, and feeling she didn’t fit the perceived “beautiful” image, ate away at her confidence.

“I always perceived myself as being much larger than I actually was,” said Hemstreet.

“I never felt like I was quote unquote beautiful because I didn’t look like those women in the magazines. I didn’t believe that I looked a certain way, so I didn’t have confidence to do certain things.”

And she’s not alone in this.

Six in 10 girls stop doing what they love because they feel bad about their looks. Only 14 per cent of Grade 10 girls feel self-confident, and a small four per cent of women believe they are beautiful, according to statistics from a Dove research campaign used by the project.

The Unapologetic Beauty Project aims to change that by promoting positive self-image through social media and in the classroom so girls can grow up confident in themselves, said Hemstreet.

“We want to promote positive body image; that everyone is beautiful just the way they are,” said Hemstreet. “We need to know that and accept that so people can grow up feeling beautiful in the skin they’re in.” #UNAPOLOGETICBEAUTY

themselves on social media – Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Youtube – explaining why they are beautiful, or why someone they know is beautiful, along with the hashtag #unapologeticbeauty, and then donate to the cause. The campaign runs until Dec. 15.

“People should understand that this project is made for young women by young women. It’s all from us. The reason

we need people to be donating and making a buzz of this is because it’s an important issue,” said Hemstreet.

“We have women from all walks of life. It’s all different kinds of girls just getting up to tell everyone that being beautiful is not classified as one thing.”

The Dunrobin Community Centre will be closed for repairs for four days this month to fix a leak in the mechanical room.

Meditation softens stress: Carp Healing Circle Experienced meditation and yoga instructor Kaia Nightingale spoke at the Nov. 15 Carp Healing Circle on the topic of ‘Health Benefits of Meditation, Mindful Living and Good Breathing’.

Nightingale invited her audience at the Carp Memorial Hall to examine what they wanted from meditation practice and reminded them that meditation is a state of awareness rather than a technique.

Her peaceful and calming presence brought home the benefits of meditation.

Nightingale included suggestions about how to start and maintain a meditation practice using breath and mindfulness for focus and objects such as a candle, picture or bell and scent to build meditative energy and finally to lift themselves up.

Busy lives leave people with busy minds and changing gears is not always easy, though it can be made easier with

meditation.

A still mind is the key, putting attention into open space bursting through the clouds of busyness to clear sky beyond. When the breath slows, the mind slows and people are in a state of meditative awareness.

Meditation is a cognitive skill that requires practice.

Dunrobin Community Centre to close for repairs

Ward 5 West Carleton-March NEW WEB-TOOL TO HELP FIND OUT “WHERE IS MY PLOW?” There is a new tool available this winter that will help residents know when a plow will clear their snowcovered residential street. Called “Where Is My Plow,” the web tool allows residents to enter their home address and find the estimated time when their residential street will be plowed during a major storm. Times are estimated using real-time GPS information from the snow plow fleet.

The tool will work on any phone, mobile device, laptop or desktop computer. It provides timelines for residential streets only, and doesn’t provide information for arterial roads, collector roads or sidewalks. Check out this handy tool at http://www.whereismyplow.ca/Where/snowplow.

City of Ottawa Notice of Proposed Official Plan and Zoning By-Law Amendments Flood Plains

Notice of Commencement of Transit Project Assessment Process Confederation Line East Extension The Project The City of Ottawa is developing a plan to extend and expand the City’s existing Light Rail Transit network. Specifically the plan includes extending the future Confederation Line farther east from Blair Station to an interim terminal at Place d’Orléans station and ultimately, to Trim Road.

The plan includes options to service the community of Orléans and adjacent lands. New stations will be located at Montreal Road, Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard, Orléans Boulevard and the terminal station at Place d’Orléans. Additional stations will ultimately be constructed at Brisebois Cresent/Mockingbird Drive (Orléans Town Centre), Tenth Line Road and the terminus of the line at Trim Road.

The Process Planning efforts have been completed and the City is now formalizing the environmental assessment component in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08. As part of the TPAP, an Environmental Project Report (EPR) will be prepared to document the study process, a description of the planned project, its anticipated environmental impacts, as well as the project’s consultation program.

Consultation Members of the public, agencies and other interested persons are invited to review the work completed to-date, including previous consultation efforts and reports presented to City Council on this project during the planning phase. Information about the progress of the project to date is available on the City’s website at ottawa.ca/easternLRT. In winter-spring 2016, the draft EPR will be made available for public review and notification will be issued.

In accordance with the Planning Act and Section 5.2.3 of the Official Plan for the City of Ottawa, notice is hereby provided that amendments are proposed to update the flood plain policies and mapping in the Official Plan and Zoning By-law. This is the first of a series of amendments in a multi-year program to implement updated flood plain mapping received from the Conservation Authorities.

The City of Ottawa partnered with the three Conservation Authorities having jurisdiction in the city, the Mississippi Valley, Rideau Valley and South Nation Conservation Authorities, to update the flood plain mapping in the Official Plan and Zoning By-law. The updated mapping is based on the most accurate information available regarding the elevation of lands adjacent to watercourses.

Amendments are proposed to the flood plain policies in Section 4.8.1 of the Official Plan to distinguish between two-zone policy areas and areas of reduced risk. Further amendments are proposed relating to requirements to update Schedule K of the Official Plan each time the Zoning By-law is amended.

High standards are a good thing

A

s they continue to look for ways to pinch pennies over at city hall, the latest city auditor general report has been unveiled and it suggests the city could bank some cash by changing the way it goes about clearing snow and maintaining roads during the winter.

It seems, according to auditor general Ken Hughes, that the city has set higher standards for snow clearing than the province, and that if the city were to change its standards, significant savings can be had. By changing its standards, what is meant is, of course, lowering those standards.

Basically Hughes’ report says that the city should look at how much money it could save by bringing Ottawa’s winter maintenance standards closer to the provincial standards.

According to the auditor general, there isn’t any data available to show how much more the city is spending to maintain roads at a higher standard than the province deems necessary, and there are other potential areas the city could save money in snow removal as well; the audit found that staff are assigned to lower priority duties other than snow removal or salting 25 per cent of the time, duties that may not be required.

The issue of winter road maintenance and snow clearing was already on the city’s radar before the au-

ditor general’s report last week, as it has contracted consultant KPMG to review the municipality’s winter maintenance program. It is expected that there will be a report going forward to city council next spring as a result of that review.

The provincial standard for clearing residential roads at this time is to have the work done within a 16-to 20hour window, as compared to the city’s standard of 10 hours. There is also a difference of about two hours when it comes to busier streets, with again, the city being quicker to get to work than the province.

Examining ways that the city can save money in how it goes about its business is always a good exercise to undertake, but that doesn’t mean that every possible saving is necessarily a good idea.

Is it really a bad thing that the city has higher standards for road maintenance and snow removal during the winter months? Snow removal and road maintenance are, at the end of the day, a safety issue. Should the city really be contemplating lower standards than it has just because others have lower standards?

Saving money when it makes sense to do so is always good idea. Saving money at the expense of public safety is something else entirely. Perhaps it is the province that has the wrong standards for winter road maintenance, and not the city.

War Museum serves important role

W

e were driving along the parkway (as an aside, could we just start calling it the Western Parkway again, since Sir John A. already has his name on a lot of things?) — as I was saying, we were driving along the Western Parkway with some out-of-town relatives when one of them said “What’s that?”

It was the War Museum and we explained to them about the morse code on the roof that says Lest We Forget, and the spot where the light hits at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month on the headstone of the Unknown Soldier, and then we said, you’ve got to see it.

The next day we went back in the afternoon, a weekday, and showed it off. When you look at it through

The more familiar you become with the museum, the more you realize how multi-faceted it is. While critics feared a war museum might glorify war, this one does not. Yes, there is recognition of important victories that were won. Yes, there is praise for heroic Canadians. What should be celebrated is.

But there are also constant and vivid reminders of how horrible war is, how miserable were the trenches in the First World War, how cold and wet and dangerous and soul-destroying the whole thing could be.

Also, how unreliable was the equipment and how questionable was the judgment of some generals and politicians.

ate about the War Museum is the way it takes time away from the battlefield to show what is happening back in Canada. War demanded sacrifice at home as well, and it created terrible hardships for those who stayed. It wasn’t all just parades.

I saw some young children going through the museum and wondered about that, about what is the proper age for kids to learn about war and how young is too young. At some stage, for sure, young people need to know, both to take pride in their country’s accomplishments and to understand the causes and consequences of war.

In that respect, I wondered a bit about the admission fees. It’s not that the visitor doesn’t get his money’s worth. But a $15 charge for an individual or a $36 charge for a family could be a little steep for some. City has its road safety priorities out of whack

To the Editor: So I’m out on a wee bit of a tour the other day, up 44, turned left on the Dwyer Hill Road and wow! A spanking brand new low profile chain link fence erected in the ditches.

I would guesstimate a kilometer or two in length each side of the road.

Fence has a unique molded protective top rail cap running its full length to boot.

I’m wondering now what would that be for, a deer/ coyote barrier? Can’t be, too low; deer/ coyote could easily jump over it.

Could it be a refuse screen to catch debris coming off the highway so as not to choke the ditches? A snow screen?

Next day I’m talking with a friend who tells me it’s a barrier to inhibit turtles from crossing the road. Construction cost - $600,000+. Total project costs originating from the projects’ inception, Environmental Impact studies, Environmental Assessment studies, approvals, engineering, tender docs, tender posting, tender award, project management and supervision are not available (or difficult to correlate) on the City website.

Allow me to wander a bit. All spring long the West Carleton Review published letter after letter on the subject of road safety – bicycles/ vehicles. The need for bicycle lanes a more than obvious remedy in most situations.

If I recall an article published with the WCR not so long ago, the gist of the story read that the City of Ottawa was adopting a policy that all roads shall be designed as Smart Roads. Designs that shall have engineering practices (safety) inherent so that all modes of transportation, be it pedestrian, vehicular or bicycle are considered and constructed accordingly.

Few weeks back, the Richardson Side Road and the Old Almonte Road, were scarified, bases prepared, two lifts of bituminous asphalt laid and the road shoulders dressed and packed with new granular stone.

Whoa!? – dressed and packed with granular stone, no bicycle lane, Couldn’t be?

Could it be the city felt that it would have been cost prohibitive to add a metre-wide strip of asphalt each side of the roads or that the projects time line was

too tight, that drainage patterns would have had to been addressed to ensure a positive water shed into the ditches?

Pick a reason or add your own.

Is it that the City feels the safety of a daughter, son, brother, sister, mother, father is distant to that of a turtle?

Please, I enjoy nature, fauna and flora, no need to bash me. I just think common sense needs consideration.

Things that make one ponder: Can turtles climb fences, hence the need for the protective rail cap?

If they do climb, the point of the fence is?

Would have a strategically placed under road culverts been a better resolve?

Easier on the taxpayers pocket too.

Perhaps the protective rail cap is to protect a cyclist from being impaled upon the fencings final top course after being struck by a vehicle.

When the snow is winged back during the winter season and the fence is buried under the tons of snow, ice and salt, how long does one think its integrity will endure?

Cows are like humans.

They have a nine-month gestation period. And if they lose their young, they mourn.

Last calving season, our first cow to give birth did so on Valentine’s Day. We got her into the barn and she seemed to be labouring comfortably, so we dared to go back to the house, planning to check on her again in a few hours.

When we returned, we saw she had gone ahead and given birth to a calf on her own. It lay in the corner of the pen and I could tell with a glance that it was dead.

The poor cow looked at me and mooed.

I don’t know if the calf died in the birthing process, or if it was dead before it was born.

In any case, the mama was upset.

And then, adding insult to injury, she was kicked out of her shelter.

With no calf to feed, she

DIANA FISHER Accidental Farmwife lost her right to the barn pen and was ousted the next morning into the snow. We only have so much room inside, and it’s reserved for the new moms and their babies’ first days.

She stood at the barn door and bawled.

It was another month before the next cow gave birth, to a healthy calf. The remaining nine cows followed, and we ended up with 10 calves for 11 cows.

Each time the barn door opened and another cow was ushered into the birthing area, the cow who had lost her calf tried to get back in. I told her it wasn’t her fault that her calf was gone. I told her next year

she would have a healthy calf.

She stared at me, and seemed to understand.

Last month, it was time for the calves to go. The males, anyway. We keep the females, and we had two this year.

The Farmer had an inquiry from a local farming family who just wanted one male calf. They came over on a weekend, we had a good visit and a chat, they loaded up the calf and went home.

When they unloaded their new calf and put it in the barn, they made a discovery. The calf was female. They called us to let us know they had one of our two female babies.

We couldn’t be bothered to go and retrieve her or to try and catch another single bull calf.

So we let her go. Off to her new adventure, helping to propagate the species at another farm.

Luckily her new owners didn’t have their hearts set

Let’s just hope her fur babies don’t find the gifts and unwrap them before the holidays.

on a bull calf, and they were happy.

Eight males were loaded on a truck and taken by Dennis the drover to market. One little female remained.

The Farmer says we don’t call her a calf anymore. She’s a heifer and she will have her first calf next year. She seems so young, yet. She spends her days at her mother’s side, and she still nurses occasionally.

The mama who lost her calf next February seems to be a season ahead of the rest. She gave birth earlier and went into heat earlier because she wasn’t nursing.

The Farmer thinks she is going to have her next calf before Christmas. She is bulging and slow.

It’s already December and the cows are still eating grass.

We have to supplement with hay because there isn’t much nutrition left on the pasture, but it’s nice for them to be able to wander around and lie in the meadow in the afternoon sun.

On the eve of the climate change conference in Paris 25,000 people gathered on the lawn of Ottawa city hall to champion sustainable energy and a clean economy.

The 100% Possible Climate Change March on Nov. 29 was organized by Ecology Ottawa and featured speakers such as David Suzuki and Nunavut Mayor Jerry Natanine.

Will Amos, the MP for Pontiac, Que. made the trek to Ottawa to participate in the march.

“I am just a citizen holding my government accountable for my children and my grandchildren,” he said, adding there is hope with the Liberal commitment of $2.6 billion to help developing countries fight climate change and the Albertan commitment to a carbon tax.

The aim of the march was to put pressure on the federal gov-

ernment to put Canada on track to have a 100 per cent clean economy by 2050.

Cheryl McNamara, from the Citizens Climate Lobby of Canada – Toronto chapter, said the country needs to have a national price for carbon tax.

“That’s the way it can be truly effective,” she said. “It’s nice that certain provinces are moving in that direction, but to really be a deterrent, we need to have rising prices.”

McNamara said the lobby will bring its biggest delegation ever to the climate change conference in Paris to put pressure on the federal government to develop a plan that includes a 100 per cent clean economy.

Margie Gillis, a member of Artists for Peace, said it’s time for a change.

“I advocate a responsible life for the future,” she said. “It’s time to make a change.”

Healthy Sleeping Habits The first few years of a child’s life are perhaps the most important in terms of growth and development and it’s natural for parents to worry about whether their child is achieving important milestones in a timely manner.

By encouraging good habits from the very beginning, parents can make sure their child is off to the best start possible.

Instilling good sleep habits at an early age is very important. Research shows that inadequate sleep can affect your child’s mood and behaviours, their eating habits, and their ability to concentrate in school. A few common problems that parents encounter with their children are inadequate sleep, resistance to sleeping and frequently waking up at night.

On average, toddlers should get 10 to 13 hours of sleep every night and preschoolers should get 10 to 12 hours.Make sure your little one’s bed time and the time they wake up in the morning is consistent and maintained everyday whether it is a school day or the weekend.

Consider adding an hour of quiet time before bedtime and include quiet and relaxing activities such as reading or taking a bath. Activities such as playing video games or watching TV should be avoided during this time.

Early Literacy

From birth until five years of age, children’s psychological development changes rapidly. The way a child interacts with their parent is perhaps the most important way in which they learn about the world around them.

Research shows that reading to your child and encouraging them to read at an early age helps prepare them for school and improves their future academic career. Activities such as singing to your child and engaging them in conversations are also a great way to improve their vocabulary.

According to Dr. Alyson Shaw, a pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), “When you read, speak, or sing with your baby or child, you are surrounding them with words and language that are the building blocks of later reading success. Sharing books daily makes routines like mealtime, nap time, and bath time easier. You don’t have to read the books all the way through - just talking about the pictures can be enough. Most importantly, regular story time with a loving adult early in life creates positive bonds that benefit your child’s health throughout their life course.”

CHEO and Ottawa Public Health have teamed up to deliver a series on CTV called Parenting in Ottawa this fall and winter. The topics covered will include common problems faced by parents in Ottawa and will help them make sure kids in our community stay their healthiest.

Tune in to CTV Ottawa’s News at 6 on December 9, 2015 for the second installment which will focus on healthy active living.

Parents can also visit the Parenting in Ottawa Facebook page and have their questions answered by experts on early childhood and a variety of other topics.

School board reaches local deal with elementary teachers

The Ottawa-Carleton District public school board has reached a tentative local agreement with the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario and its Ottawa Teacher Local.

The school board is still negotiating with one other ETFO bargaining unit, which represents occasional teachers, as well as five other secondary school support staff bargaining units.

Kinburn girl decides to donate her birthday money to CHEO Scott Campbell

Nicole Fisher, a Grade one student at Stonecrest elementary, has a big heart.

The Kinburn girl recently turned six years old. When asked if there was anything she would like for her

birthday, Nicole requested money.

“She wanted to give to a charity,” said Nicole’s mother, Alisa.

Nicole was inspired to give after a friend had done something similar for her birthday. The idea was hatched that she would ask each guest for two toonies.

“One for the charity and one for

Nicole to go shopping with to choose her own present,” said Alisa.

After a discussion on the different charities, Nicole settled on the CHEO foundation, so she could help out sick kids.

“Others in the community heard of her idea; we received donations from our church, my co-workers and

family members,” said Alisa.

Nicole eventually received close to $100. She also insisted on donating the money she received from the tooth fairy for her first tooth.

Alisa decided to match the amount to round out the amount to $200 to donate to CHEO. Nicole was quite happy with help-

ing with the cause. The wave of kindness has been paying it forward.

Alisa noted that Nicole was invited to another friend’s birthday party with the same idea to give to charity.

“Hopefully more people will be inspired by these six-year-olds and decide that helping others is more rewarding than material gifts.”

CHEO helps parents keep kids healthy

(CHEO) and Ottawa Public Health (OPH) are teaming up to share expertise, tips and easy-to-access resources with parents and caregivers of children and youth.

The goal is to support parents and keep kids healthier and out of the hospital.

A new biweekly series, Parenting in Ottawa, has begun on CTV’s News at 6.

Parents talk about the challenges of keeping kids healthy and safe in today’s world, and experts in children’s health share their advice.

The series includes both individual news stories and special editions of News at 6 on a health theme.

“We are excited to share timely, reliable and relevant health information with the launch of the Parenting in Ottawa series,” said Dr. Isra Levy, Ottawa’s medical officer of health.

“From planning for a family to the teenage years, we want to help parents with the day-to-day challenges they face and connect them with the resources available from Ottawa Public Health, CHEO and other partners in the community.”

“We hope that the Parenting in Ottawa series will provide useful tips to parents and will inspire our com-

munity to work together to improve children’s lives so they can be their healthiest,” said CHEO president Alex Munter. “This partnership will help us reach families and share strategies for integrating health into their daily lives.”

CHEO is also relaunching the call for exceptional people and organizations that go the ‘extra mile’ to keep kids healthy and active. CHEO’s sixth annual Healthy Kids Awards in March will recognize these special people and what they’ve achieved for kids and youth.

Winners can include coaches, teachers, students, volunteers, community groups, advocates, health service providers, social service agencies or companies who are helping keep the kids in the community healthy and safe.

People can submit an application for a Healthy Kids Award, or nominate an individual, program or organization for one of these award categories: Youth for Youth, Community Champion, Community Program, Help for Special Needs, and Health Advocacy and Public Education. The deadline is Jan. 22.

Winners will receive a $500 prize to be reinvested in their program.

Mitic to read, sign books at cadet bazaar Author, veteran and Ottawa Coun. Jody Mitic will be a guest at the inaugural Cadet Christmas Bazaar this Sunday, Dec. 6.

Mitic, who was elected to Ottawa council last year, is the author of Unflinching: The Making of a Canadian Sniper.

The “raw, candid, and engrossing memoir” follows his personal journey into the Cana-

dian military, through sniper training, and firefights in Afghanistan, culminating on the fateful night when he stepped on a landmine and lost both of his legs below the knees.

Mitic will be doing a reading at the bazaar in the Arnprior Legion around at 10:30 a.m. and then will sign copies of his book.

The Christmas bazaar, host-

ed by the Arnprior-based 2360 Army Cadet squadron, will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Legion. There will be many craft tables and vendors.

Proceeds will go toward the fundraising efforts of the cadets for a trip in 2017 to Vimy Ridge in France for the 100th anniversary of the famous First World War battle noted for the heroism of Canadian soldiers.

Work on Light rail tunnel to continue through the winter Jennifer McIntosh

This winter, residents will be able to predict when snow plows are passing by their home, thanks to a new app the city is releasing called Where’s my Plow?

City-owned snow plows will have GPS attached to them.

Residents will be able to enter their address via a link on the city’s website, or at whereismyplow.ca. The tool will give residents a 15-minute window when plows will pass by their address.

The app will only be available for residential roads, but will help people figure when it’s best to shovel their driveways, said city transportation chair Keith Egli.

“This will enhance the service we already provide,” he said at a briefing on the city’s winter operations on Nov. 20.

Road services manager Luc Gagné said the city began reviewing snow removal operations in June and be will keeping an eye on key locations downtown, such as Nicholas Street between Laurier Avenue and Highway 417, to keep the snow clear.

The city will also add 20 kilometres of cycling routes to the plowing schedule.

When the snow flies, major arterial roads, highways and the Transitway are the priority. The goal is to get them cleared within four hours after a snowfall.

Residential roads should be cleared within six hours, Gagné said.

Work on the city’s light rail line will continue in the winter, which will mean Transitway closures starting Dec. 20 – between Lees and Hurdman stations.

There will be a larger closure on Jan. 17 that will have

to divert routes that travel from Merton Street to Empress Avenue – between the Bayview and Lebreton stations.

CONSTRUCTION

Any projects involving soil and water typically pause during winter, said Alain Gonthier, manager of infrastructure services.

The city will continue working on tunnelling for the Confederation Line during the winter.

The Lyon Street Station is 96 per cent complete, according to city staff. Parliament Station is 56.3 per cent complete and Rideau Station is 49 per cent done.

The Arts Court and Ottawa Art Gallery expansion will also continue, along with the widening of Greenbank Road, the West Transitway extension from Bayshore to Moodie.

However, with the renovations at the Arnprior Mall, the annual Pet Pics with Santa will

Each year I try to get in one last outing just before freeze-up.

This year it took place on Nov. 26 on Lake Travers in Algonquin.

Because the day was heavily overcast (rain was forecast), dawn wasn’t much of a spec-

tacle. The temperature held near freezing, but the lake seemed free of ice and only a mild breeze caressed its surface, so conditions were fine for my final outing.

The sheltered bays seemed particularly calm for they offered perfect reflections of the dark gray clouds.

When I headed for shore, I quickly learned the reflections were due not to calm water but to ice! Fortunately, my canoe sliced through the thin veneer without difficulty or excessive noise.

Still, the sound of breaking ice arose the curiosity of three distant River Otters, which raised their heads inquisitively and loudly snorted their indignation at having an intruder on their lake.

regularly adorned the snowy banks; those youngsters certainly had been busy!

I passed by an old, abandoned beaver lodge and wondered where the Beavers were living this year.

I paddled around the eastern side of the lake and encountered a male Bufflehead and 27 Common and four Hooded mergansers. Perhaps due to the impending weather the ducks seemed nervous and didn’t allow close approach.

Eventually, with some reluctance, I headed back, but just before I reached my launching spot, I discovered where the Beavers had relocated. Behind a rocky point resided a brand new lodge and massive food pile.

Near the lodge virtually every shoreline alder had been felled for building materials. The lodge was situated along the shore and appeared to lie on top of boulders, for it had an atypical shape.

Soon after I stepped on the lodge, a Muskrat appeared in the food pile. It is known that Beavers occasionally share their lodge with Muskrats, but I had only seen that once before. I could hear the Beaver moving inside its lodge, but it failed to make an appearance.

I expect that the lodge will be gone by spring, for at winter’s end the Petawawa River rises spectacularly and roars into Travers with a vengeance.

Perhaps the Beavers will return to the marsh. If so, I should find out on next year’s early spring canoe outing!

The Legion in the Bay welcomed all veterans to the annual Christmas party on Saturday, Nov. 28.

The bus bringing the vets from the Perley/Rideau Health Centre arrived at 11:30 a.m. and was received by the Legion’s entertainer EIO George, branch members, Korean vets and vets of all modern day conflicts. The guests settled in to the strains of EIO’s accordion, then lunch was served.

After lunch, a special dedication took place as a memorial collage depicting all Afghanistan veterans who made the supreme sacrifice was unveiled in the members lounge.

The memorial is a gift to the branch from Afghanistan vet Kyle Griff, for which Legion officials thank him profusely.

After this solemn ceremony, everyone was ready to get back into a party mood and did so with a sing-along followed by The 616 Entertainers. Santa was to pay a visit to round out the afternoon, but a messenger Elf reported that he was ‘stuck in a chimney’ so couldn’t make it but to give each vet a gift bag and he’d be back on Dec. 24.

One of Ottawa’s newest queer youth drop-ins has received an award after effecting change at a popular radio station and bringing the first Pride event to the west end.

The group, called the Queerios, accepted a Growing Up Great Award in the Safe and Supported category from the Ottawa Child and Youth Initiative during a ceremony on Nov. 23.

The Queerios, a drop-in program for youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and more (LGBTQ+), was started by the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre about seven months ago after youth workers recognized the need for such a program in the city’s west end.

“The Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre has the biggest catchment of youth in Ottawa, thus we have the biggest population of queer youth as well, so it’s really important to bring these services out to the youth in the western area,” said Jenna Boucher, the Queerios facilitator.

This sort of program has tended to be available only downtown, which has been difficult for youth to attend, especially when they live in rural areas or the suburbs, said Boucher.

Though just a few months old, the Queerios have already made their mark on the west – and even on the airwaves – by holding Kanata’s first Pride event, and convincing radio station Hot 89.9

The Queerios held their Pride event on Aug. 20 at the WOCRC, featuring music and other performances, games, activities, food and drink in an open and accepting atmosphere.

“This building was packed full of young people,” said Cathy Jordan, executive director of the WOCRC. “I still get goosebumps when I think about the event.”

“It seemed like people were having a lot of fun, enjoying the music, playing the games, socializing and meeting new people,” said Alex Hirkala, one of the youth involved in the program.

said Boucher, who congratulated them on bringing Pride to the suburbs.

In addition to holding their own community event, the Queerios have also reached out to the wider community to make changes they feel are needed.

That’s what happened during Hot 89.9’s contest called the New Normal.

The contest offered one winner $40,000 towards gender reassignment surgery, in an effort to promote “acceptance for all,” said the station.

“We thought it was like a phenomenal idea,” said Boucher. “But when we were listening to it, the wording was a little problematic for us. It kind of suggested that being trans is a choice, and calling it the New Normal also suggested that trans people’s realities are only now becoming a reality and that trans people in the past, it has never been a true reality.”

In response to the contest, the Queerios youth wrote a letter with suggested changes and sent it to the radio station.

They got a quick response. “(Hot 89.9) explained the idea of why they are calling it the New Normal, which in the long run I do understand but at the same time don’t agree,” said Boucher. “But they did change their tag line from ‘Live the life you want to live’ to ‘Live the life you were born to live,’ which I think was amazing, and that was something that the youth totally came up with themselves.”

The Queerios youth are hoping to effect more changes, starting with the washroom signage at the WOCRC building.

“They are doing an amazing

job encouraging people to think differently and voicing what that particular group needs,” said Jordan. “It’s pretty exciting.”

In addition to the wider community, the drop-in is about creating a community for LGBTQ+ youth where they can feel comfortable identifying as the gender and sexual orientation they are, outside of binary gender norms.

It’s harder to do that in a school environment where people may not be as understanding, said Hirkala, who identifies as a transgender male.

“I can really connect to the people in this group and socialize with them and have a lot of fun and just be myself,” he said.

Part of that inclusiveness is a willingness to learn and apply the right pronouns and identifiers that best represent each individual.

“I’m kind of frustrated when (kids at school) don’t get it, like they use the wrong pronouns,” said Jesse Rowe, who identifies as a gay male. “I know a lot of people who used to know me as a girl so I get mis-gendered a lot, and that’s really frustrating, you know, but at the Queerios, you could never get that. They all just get it.”

With the group’s first award under its belt, Jordan said she is sure the Queerios will be applying their passion and inclusivity to new projects.

“I am expecting big things from them,” she said.

Fraudsters ‘phishing’ on the phone for your ‘phunds’ institution, business or government agency.

The e-mail may request or direct the consumer to visit a certain website to update or provide personal and/or financial information and passwords.

However, it is really a “malicious attempt” to collect customer information

for the purpose of committing fraud, warn the OPP. It is also known as ‘brand spoofing’, they note.

The new twist fraudsters are attempting is they are using some type of software to clone local phone numbers on your call display, also known as caller ID spoofing, believing you will be more

trusting dealing with someone you believe to be from your town.

Police say the fraud is sales oriented or charity related.

People report they often see their own phone number on call display, or that of local schools or businesses.

“If in doubt don’t pick

up,” advise the OPP. To protect yourself from phone fraud, police suggest you: • don’t give personal information over the phone; • get facts in writing prior to giving donations; • if you haven’t bought a ticket you haven’t won a prize;

OPP are warning citizens to be vigilant if they receive a call from someone saying they are with a credit card company.

One resident reported getting a phone call from someone pretending to be with VISA. They knew her name and first four numbers of her credit card, and asked her to confirm the remaining numbers of her card, expiry date and security numbers.

The resident refused and hung up.

Ottawa police do not want your money.

The department has issued a warning about a recent scam in which callers say they are raising money on behalf of the Ottawa Police Service and ask for credit card numbers.

“The Ottawa police would like to remind the public that we do not solicit donations from the public,” the service said in a statement on Nov. 24.

“For any company, it’s very rare that they (fundraise) by phone, and if you’re not sure just visit the website or call that organization … to verify,” said Const. Marc Soucy, Ottawa police spokesman. “We would advise not to give money blindly.

Do your research before you decide to give to charity or an organization.”

Police issued the warning about the scam after fraud investigators began receiving multiple reports from concerned residents in recent weeks about suspicious callers.

Soucy said he was not aware of any recent cases in which people turned over their credit card numbers and were bilked of their money.

People are encouraged to be vigilant in resisting the fraudsters, who often engage in highpressure tactics, Soucy said.

“The more they keep you on the line, the more chances they have to get your information and then get some money out of you,” he said. “These people need to be caught.”

Scams of this kind are not new during the holiday season.

The Ottawa police department’s name has been used in the past by fraudsters to try to solicit cash.

“We’ve seen it in the past and it’s always at the same time of the year,” Soucy said.

Officers with the police organized fraud unit urges anyone who has fallen prey to this scam to contact them and file a report.

Anyone with information on this type of fraud is asked to call the fraud section at 613-2361222, ext. 5162, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.

Santa Claus is coming to Pakehham, and Almonte.

Santa is visiting Mississippi Mills for the entire weekend, as he’ll be attending Light Up the Night this Friday, Dec. 4, the Pakenham Santa Claus parade on Saturday, Dec. 5 and the Almonte Santa Claus parade Sunday, Dec. 6.

“It’s a full weekend of Christmas,� said Tiffany MacLaren, the municipality’s community cultural and economic co-ordinator. “We like to offer both so people can choose which parade they want to go to,� MacLaren said. “Of course, they can go to both if they want.�

The theme for this year’s parades is ‘Beloved Christmas Tales and Stories’. MacLaren said the idea is wide open to interpretation: floats can cen-

tre around a Christmas carol, a story or even about reading in general and can include a vast array of characters from Frosty to Rudolph.

MacLaren remindS people to be safe during the parades and stresses there is to be no throwing candy from floats. Candy should be handed to guests from walking participants at both parades.

The Pakenham Santa Claus parade will take place at 1 p.m., starting at the Stewart Community Centre, heading down County Road 29 before looping back.

Guests are invited to line up along the highway or one of the side streets for a prime view of participating floats.

Last year’s parade saw more than 50 entries,

and MacLaren said they expect similar attendance this year. Afterwards, guests are invited back to the Stewart Community Centre for free family skating and a visit with Santa himself. A free snack of hot dogs and hot chocolate provided by Greater Ottawa Realty will also be available.

While there are no prizes this year for participants in the Pakenham parade, MacLaren said that they’ll be hosting a draw for Christmas wreaths donated by Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm, open to everyone.

Anyone wishing to participate in the Pakenham parade can meet at the Stewart Community Centre 45 minutes before the parade starts to line up. No registration is necessary.

ALMONTE PARADE

The Almonte Santa Claus parade will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday, making it the fourth night parade the municipality has hosted. “We wanted to change the time to give more people the opportunity to attend one of the parades,� MacLaren said, adding that the night parade has been very successful so far. “It also changes things up between the Pakenham and Almonte parades.�

The Almonte parade sees between 60 and 70 participants each year, with each float decked to the nines with bright lights. Participants are encouraged to make their floats as bright and colourful as possible.

This year’s parade will have four prize categories. The winner in the Best Use of Theme and Lights category will receive a $100 prize courtesy of the Almonte Civitan Club.

The winner in the Best Overall Entry category will also win $100, courtesy of the Almonte Lions Club. Prizes of $100 will also be awarded for the Best Use of Music category and the Best Walking Entry category.

The parade leaves from the Almonte Community Centre (arena) at 5 p.m., snaking down Mill Street before looping back around. Participants are encouraged to meet at the arena one hour before the start, but there is no need to formally register.

Guests and participants in the parade are invited back to the arena after the parade for free skating, a visit with Santa and a snack of free hot chocolate and hot dogs provided by the Almonte Lions Club.

‘Shouldn’t hurt’ hockey tournament does some good Scott Campbell

The 30th anniversary ‘It shouldn’t hurt to be a child’ hockey tournament in Arnprior on the Nov. 20-22 weekend again helped the victims of violence cause.

Organizer Dave McCormick could not give an official number at press time, but tracking of money raised appeared to be on average from previous years – over $10,000. Funds from donations and silent auctions go towards the Victims of Violence Canadian Centre for Missing Children.

The weekend event that kicked off last Friday had 48 teams entered. More than 25 kid’s teams participated, as well, in a series of exhibition games.

“Kids from seven years to 14 years competed all weekend for what is most important –fun,” said McCormick.

The hall was jammed full of hockey players, parents and adult participants.

There were many prizes won and everything was for a great cause.

“One notable mention should go out to a kids hockey teams from Nepean Pee Wee A, Fearless Fighters they are called,” said McCormick. “The team treated this as a small fundraiser and

they collectively got sponsors /pledges and raised $1,000 for the charity.

“It’s awesome stuff and sends a strong message that there are a lot of good things happening in this world of ours, although we continuously hear about the bad.”

In the women’s Lafarge Concrete Division, local teams participating included Arnprior Moose, Barrs Service Centre Pakenham and Ottawa Valley Power.

“A team that plays out of Ottawa, which has local players such as Tracy Burnette, was the overall champions, defeating number-one ranked Ottawa Mavericks in an upset in the final 4-2,” said McCormick.

In the Mulvihill Insurance Division was a local team Senior B’s.

“A team made up of mostly ex-Arnprior Junior B Packers players defeated the Coasters, a team made of players from a small village island off the coast of the Quebec and Newfoundland border.”

The Herzing College Division Champs were Cianni Construction Ottawa, which defeated local team Dany Macs.

The homegrown Pistons team edged out Stittsville Open Roads in the Coors Lite Men’s Division.

Fury say goodbye to old coach, hello to new one Alex Robinson

Just a few days after their previous coach held a going away press conference, the Ottawa Fury have a new head coach.

Ottawa Fury FC appointed Paul Dalglish on Nov. 20 as the second head coach in the club’s history. Dalglish brings extensive experience as a professional player and coach to the Fury. He joins the Fury from the Austin Aztex, where he served as head coach and technical director. Dalglish will serve as both head coach and general manager of Fury FC. “The head coach position at Ottawa Fury FC has garnered significant interest and, in Paul, we have attracted one of the most im-

pressive young coaches in North American,” said Fury FC president John Pugh.

The announcement came soon after Marc Dos Santos spoke as the club’s head coach for the last time at a press conference on Nov. 17, fondly recalling some favourite memories with the team.

The Fury’s season wrapped up with a 3-2 loss in a NASL championship game against the New York Cosmos in New York on Nov. 15.

Dos Santos, who was named NASL coach of the year, joined the club as its first head coach in 2014 and announced he would not be returning for the 2016 season in September.

“The gafa – as he’s sometimes called – is leaving us.

and we’re fortunate to have been one stop on his highway,” said Pugh.

“He wins wherever he goes and he’s certainly won here in Ottawa for us.”

The Fury’s second year in the NASL saw the team place second in the league overall with a re-

cord of 15-11-4. The team placed ninth in the spring section of its split season, going 2-5-3, then turned things around, losing only one game down to stretch to win the fall season.

Dos Santos said the team’s semi-final game against Minnesota at TD Place in front of more

than 9,000 fans was a highlight of his time with the club.

“We have to strive in Ottawa to have not only one but many nights like that,” he said.

The night the team won the fall season in Jacksonville was another fond memory, he said.

Dos Santos thanked Pugh,

the Ottawa Sports Entertainment Group and his players for the two seasons.

“This group of men has been something very special for me personally in my life. I’ve never learned so much with a group,” Dos Santos said of his players.

Dos Santos is departing the Fury for a new role with a new club in the premier soccer league in North America, a step up from the level at which the Fury play.

At that point, the cost and inconvenience of amending the agreement could be a problem, but more significantly the parties may find that they are in disagreement about one of the overlooked issues. Part of obtaining independent legal advice is to ensure that not only are the contents of the Separation Agreement effective, but that the agreement as a whole is comprehensive to the situation of the parties.

The Pet Resource Bank is appealing to the city’s veterinarians to help them offer lower-cost services for their clients.

The majority of people who contact the organization are in need of vet services and are experiencing financial difficulty, said co-founder Tanya Dennee, but it doesn’t have the funds to help.

“We have to turn away 95 per cent of people because we don’t have the cash to do the vetting,” said Dennee, who lives in West Carleton.

“We still don’t have our charitable status so we haven’t been able to do any major fundraising. Most people we do have to say no to because we have no money. We have food because we get that donated, but we have no means of generating any financial help.”

The Pet Resource Bank, which hopes to have its charitable status by the end of the year, offers assistance in the form of donated pet food and supplies, and with pet walking and behaviour services so people can keep their animals instead of surrendering them

The Pet Resource Bank currently has one veterinary centre it works with, the Chapman Mills Animal Hospital, which offers a discount on its exam fees. It’s a help, said Dennee, but she’s hoping others will come forward.

“We’re lucky we have that, but unfortunately when people come to us it’s beyond ‘I just need a check-up for my animal,’” she said. “I really don’t want to sound defeatist, I don’t want to be negative. I do understand these vets have bills to pay, but there must be a way we can help people.”

Recently, the organization had a woman contact them when her dog became violently ill. On disability, she was looking for assistance. They were able to get her a discount with their vet, but the dog had an infected uterus and had to be transferred to another clinic.

“They wouldn’t even look at her (dog) without this lady, who’s on ODSP, putting down $1,500,” said Dennee.

Kim Knapp, who founded the former Friendly Giants Dog Rescue and is a co-founder of the Pet Resource Bank, said they sent out letters to all the veterinarians in Ottawa and up the

“I never had to seek assistance, but the majority of people out there don’t have that,” she said.

“Our biggest challenge is veterinarians understanding we have a real need out there to help the people in our community who are financially struggling. They’d be working directly with our foundation – we vet our clients to ensure they qualify for additional help.

We’re not asking for freebies.”

“We had either no response or a negative response,” said Knapp, who is a trained veterinary technician.

“Some came back and told us, ‘Oh we’re already working with one or two rescues.’ We’ve also had negativity in the sense that if somebody owns a pet and can’t afford the pet, they shouldn’t have one. There’s a stigma attached.

“There’s a lot of reasons surrounding why people are having financial difficulty,” Knapp said, citing job loss, death or illness in a family, those fleeing domestic violence, or people on limited incomes. “You have to be compassionate, you have to be understanding.”

Knapp said she knows what it’s like to be on the other side of needing assistance, and rehoming or surrendering a pet is not always in the best interest of pet owners.

“This is something that’s near and dear to my heart; I left a nasty marriage with two kids and three dogs,” she said.

“In my instance my dogs were my kids’ support base. It’s like a security blanket or therapy. To tell a child getting out a domestic violence situation that ‘we have to get rid of your pet now’, that can be devastating.”

Knapp said she was lucky because she had friends who took them all in.

But not everyone is that lucky.

German honey gingerbread cookies a holiday favourite moist. Knead dough with floured hands; until smooth.

On floured work surface, with floured hands divide dough in half; shape into thick discs and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate for 12 hours or until firm.

On floured work surface, with floured rolling pin, roll out discs one at a time to 1/4-inch (0.5 cm) thickness. If it becomes sticky, dust with flour. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.

Place on parchment paper-lined baking sheets.

Bake in 325°F (160°C) oven until bottoms are golden brown, 8 to 12 minutes. Transfer to wire rack; let cool. Repeat with remaining dough.

Once cool, decorate with different colours of icing as well as small candies, as desired. Store cookies in an airtight container in a cool place up to a month.

Lebkuchen is a light gingerbread, often cut in heart shapes, decorated and sold in German markets during holiday time.

Here’s a simplified version to cut in any shape you like and they’ll keep well for weeks.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes.

Chilling Time: 12 hours.

Baking Time: eight minutes per batch.

Makes about two dozen cookies Ingredients 1-3/4 cups (325 mL) all-purpose flour 2 tsp (10 mL) ground ginger 1 tsp (5 mL) ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each ground nutmeg, allspice, salt and baking powder 1/2 cup (125 mL) lightly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup (125 mL) honey 1/4 cup (50 mL) melted butter 1 Ontario Egg 1/2 tsp (2 mL) vanilla Icing and small candies (optional)

Happy Times Pizza has only been open for a few weeks, although owner Mike Saad has been in the field since 1993 as a cook and is no stranger to West Carleton residents.

He came to Constance Bay in 2000 and had restaurants in Carp and Fitzroy, and he and his wife, Ahlam, owned the Lighthouse Restaurant.

The Lighthouse was his last Constance Bay endeavour and he sold the business to take a break.

Saad decided a concept like Happy Times would be more manageable, where he can balance work and family life.

“I love this and that’s why I do it,” said Saad.

There is not only pizza on the go at his new restaurant. Customers can choose from a selection of appetizers, poutine, salads, burgers, sandwiches, subs, donair, wraps, seafood, Italian food and chicken.

Saad even has an area in his kitchen to prepare Chinese food.

He is looking for a cook, so hopefully he can start adding Chinese food to his menu in the foreseeable future.

“It’s a great community and it’s nice to be part of it,” said Saad.

“The community has been a big support and I thank them for that. I would support them 100 per cent in anything. My town is Constance Bay.” Happy Times Pizza’s location on Constance Bay Road is in a fairly new building, dating back to 2006. Saad said it used to be a gas station but closed down in 2010.

Happy Times has been wellreceived by people in Constance Bay in the last few weeks.

It’s a pick-up and delivery service restaurant, as there are no sit-down seats. The space is used primarily for the kitchen.

There is free delivery for an order costing a minimum of $12, but the deal is only eligible within an area of 15 kilometres.

Happy Times will be on winter hours until May, open Monday to Wednesday from 3 to 10 p.m. and Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Herman’s pattern of euchre play remained steady Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

the table. Especially if he euchred someone! He’d bring down his gnarled hand and slap the oil-cloth covered table, and you could hear the kitchen window rattling.

Now, if he was euchred himself, that was a different story. He would get up from the table, glare down at his losing hand, snort a bit, wipe his nose on the cuff of his ragged shirt, and head for the back door.

There was always someone else ready to take his place, and this routine was so commonplace that the card game never missed a beat.

But when he came back in, he seemed to change a bit. And each time he left the game, went out, and came back in, the change was more noticeable.

His voice got louder, the pounding got heavier, and by the time the

evening was coming to a close, old Herman’s eyes were glazed over, and on more than one occasion he missed the chair and landed splat on the floor.

This routine was so common, that no one paid the least bit of attention. And it didn’t matter how under the weather old Herman became, he always managed to tuck away a good portion of the lunch.

When it was time for everyone to head home, old Herman would loiter around long enough knowing that he would be taking home a good pile of sandwiches and a piece of the slab cake.

The evening wasn’t over until two or three of the men would help old Herman out to the cutter, or the buggy, pile him in, toss the reins onto his lap, and turn the horse in the general direction of the gate.

It would be years before I would learn that old Herman kept a bottle of home-brew under the seat and every time he left the house during a card game, it was to take a swig out of it, and as Father would say, “fortify himself for the rest of the evening.”

It always amazed me how that old nag of a horse, with Old Herman snoring before it left our yard, would know exactly where home was.

Father said the night air would waken the old man enough that he would tumble out of the buggy or cutter and into his hut of a house, saving himself from freezing to death in his own back yard. Because he never came to a bad end, and was always the first to arrive at the next Saturday night house party!

Old Herman never brought as much as a pickle. Of course, being a bachelor, he wasn’t much of a cook anyway, and according to my sister Audrey, he wasn’t the cleanest man on the planet either. So it was probably a blessing he only came for the cards and lunch, and let everyone else worry about the food.

He arrived in his old battered buggy, or a one-seater cutter, depending on the weather, and his nag of a horse, wasn’t in much better shape either. He drove her right up to the back door, tossed the reins over whatever happened to be handy, and the horse never moved as much of a muscle all the time Old Herman was in the house playing cards.

For some reason, he was pretty lucky at euchre. Emerson said he wasn’t above cheating a bit if necessary, but no one could catch him at it.

Of course, no money changed hands. If that had been the case, someone would no doubt have kept a closer eye on old Herman.

And how he loved to pound

There was nothing old Herman liked more than a good game of euchre.

By the time November rolled around, and winter was about to set in, the Saturday night house parties were in full swing. Old Herman couldn’t be happier.

How people knew where the party was being held remains a mystery to me to this day. My sister Audrey said Myrtle at Central not only picked the farm, but would call everyone on the line to invite them, sometimes forgetting to tell the hosting farmer all about it.

At any rate, by this time of year, just about every Saturday night, there was a house party at Northcote, and old Herman was usually the first one to arrive. It was expected that everyone would chip in to supply the lunch, which never varied. Eleven quart baskets of sandwiches, a jar or two of homemade pickles, and, of course, big slab cakes.

The farm where the party was being held, of course, would have giant pots of tea simmering on the back of the cook stove by the time

Angel Tree keeps on giving Seniors at Home

An Angel Tree ‘For the Love of a Senior’ has been making a difference for local seniors and those with special needs for the past three years.

The community support service agency, ArnpriorBraeside-McNab Seniors at Home (ABMSH), has made and will continue to make a difference for individuals during their time of need with their annual Angel Tree program.

The ‘need’ over the past three years has included things such as proving a hot meal, transportation to a much needed medical appointment, putting food on the table with a trip to the grocery store, assisting with a move that may have been created by events out of their control, chores around the home for one who can no longer do on their own, and so much more.

The ‘needs’ may be taken for granted by many, but for the elderly and those with special conditions they can be vital to their well-being.

“The goal of the Angel Tree program is to provide financial need to a senior or those individuals who have special needs, not matter their age,” said ABMSH

executive director Dennis Harrington, explaining that all monies raised by the Angel Tree program are kept separate from all other fundraising programs offered

by Seniors at Home.

Harrington points out that when a staff member of ABMSH presents a request for financial assistant for an individual the process beings.

“It is a great feeling knowing, that with the community’s support, we are able to help that person. We feel like angels ourselves.”

Folks wishing to participate in the Senior Angel Tree program can pick up an ‘Angel’ at one of our four locations: Arnprior Rona, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the ABMSH office at 106 McGonigal St. West (Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and at the newest location; W.O. Stinson & Son on Hwy. 17 in Arnprior.

The ‘Angels’ range in price from $5 to $73 and can include gifts of frozen meals, hot meals, in-town transportation, out-of-town transportation, foot care and ‘pay it forward’, which includes many needs from raking leaves to a winter coat to snow removal, etc.

The procedure includes you visiting one of the lo-

cations provided, pick the ‘Angel’ from the tree, return it to ABMSH’s office and pay for the ‘Angel’.

You then receive an official income tax charity receipt and feel good knowing you have ‘paid it forward’.

‘Tis the season for giving and believing.

Chorus set to perform ‘Christmas from Around the World’

What happens when the blended voices of 40 women singing in four-part harmony join seven tenors and seven basses to sing the sounds of Christmas magic.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Kanata will swell this weekend with traditional carols known to all and special music from around the world as the West Ottawa Ladies Chorus (WOLC) joins with invited male voices to bring the joy of Christmas in song.

Known for its contribution to the community, the WOLC asks only for the reward of happy smiles from seniors and other shut-ins week after week.

The residents of Bridlewood Trails Retirement Community joined in singing carols and listened intently as beautiful melodies filled the

halls Nov. 22.

Singing is not all the chorus does though.

Members learn the story behind each song to better interpret the words.

UKRAINIAN FOLK CHANT

Carol of the Bells was composed by Mykola Leontovych in 1904 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on a Ukrainian folk chant originally celebrating the coming the New Year in April.

When Christianity became popular, the Carol of the Bells became a Christmas/New Year song transferred to December/January. It has been arranged for many different genres and styles of singing - the most popular being a

cappella by a mixed four-voice choir.

WOLC will open its performance ‘Christmas from Around the World’ with the mixed voices treating the audience to a powerful presentation of this number. This will put them in the mood for an evening of beautiful sounds.

The choruses will present the emotionally beautiful Polish carol, Lulajže, Jezuniu, in an unusual voice arrangement of three-part women’s and three-part men’s voices sung in English and Polish. This carol is a lullaby and the title means Sleep Little Jesus.

The choir will not let the audience sleep though, as they change the pace with a Wreath of Carols, a medley of more common Christmas songs that weaves the colours and sparkle of the season in a quickly moving number.

The expertise of the blended voices is to be noted when they perform John Rutter’s Star Carol. Rutter’s compositions are demanding and Robert Dueck, the choir director, expects quality from the voices he leads. However, he also loves to encourage the audience to join their voices and sing along with popular numbers.

Enjoying Christmas music is a traditional way to start the season.

The WOLC will perform ‘Christmas Around the World’ this Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 20 Young Rd. in Kanata.
