Koosmans receive summer honor for their Christmas service By Shelby Lindrud slindrud@wctrib.com WILLMAR – For a decade Chad and Angie Koosman lit up the Christmas season for the Willmar area with their massive Christmas light display at their home in rural Willmar, raising close to $1 million for the Salvation Army. Now Willmar Fests and a thankful community will be honoring the Koosmans as this year’s Grande Day Parade grand marshals. “It is an incredible honor to be asked to be the grand marshals,” Angie Koosman said. The couple, and their two daughters Sophia, 5, and Ariel, 3, will be riding in the parade on June 22, throwing out, fittingly enough, Christmas themed toys to the crowd. “We are going to have the kids throw out the squishy toys,” Chad Koosman said. Chad Koosman grew up in Willmar, while Angie Koosman moved to town in 2010. “Willmar is an amazing community to raise your family,” Angie Koosman said. “I feel very blessed to be a part of such a great community.” Chad Koosman first started his light display, Celebrate the Light of the World, in 2007. Through the decade it grew and grew until the last year there were 600,000 lights and five miles of electrical cord. Every year the Koosmans collected donations for the Salvation Army. In 2007, $800 was raised. In

For 10 years Chad Koosman, along with his wife, Angie, welcomed thousands of visitors to their rural Willmar home for Celebrate the Light of the World, a massive Christmas light display. This year the couple has been named the Willmar Fests Grande Day Parade grand marshals. 2017, in its final year at the Koosmans, the display brought in $156,780. The largest total came in 2015, the year the Koosmans’ display was featured on ABC’s “The

Great Christmas Light Fight,” which was broadcast nationwide. That year record crowds came to the display and left a record amount of donations totalling $165,000.

All total the light display raised $810,000 for the Salvation Army. The Koosmans decided that 2017 would be the last year of the light display at their home. Willmar Fests took over the lights and in 2018 it was installed for the first time at Robbins Island, continuing the legacy started by the Koosmans.

The Koosmans have now moved to a new home in Willmar and are looking forward to finding new ways to be involved in the community. “We want to continue to help Willmar grow,” Angie Koosman said. The couple is definitely honored to be this year’s grand marshals. Chad Koosman hopes it helps

continue to draw attention to the light display and its need for volunteers throughout the holiday season. “My main excitement about it is it brings excitement back to the Christmas lights,” Chad Koosman said. “We still need volunteers to make it bigger and better.”
