That’s the annual dilemma, isn’t it? As the holiday approaches, we all desire a mouthwatering feast without laborious effort.

After all, the day is meant for relaxation and celebration, not endless cooking sessions, right?

Well, I’ve got just the recipe to make your Labor Day BBQ a breeze. Imagine a delectable dish that requires minimal time and effort, is budgetfriendly, and incredibly versatile. Let me introduce you to the star of your Labor Day menu: Chicken Paillard.

Derived from the French term for flattened meat, the paillard (pronounced “pie-YAHR”) technique is a gamechanger. But don’t be intimidated by its fancy name -- it’s surprisingly simple yet oh so effective.

Picture this: a succulent chicken breast, butterflied and gently pounded to an even thickness. This thin piece of perfection cooks up in a flash, whether in a skillet, in the oven or on the grill.

And the best part?

Chicken Paillard’s versatility knows no bounds. A sprinkle of salt, a dash of pepper, a hint of garlic -that’s all it takes for an elegant and satisfying dish. Feeling adventurous? Grilled Chicken Paillard with Charred Lemon and Dressed Greens

Yield: 4 servings

Total Time: 30 minutes

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

2 tablespoons olive oil

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 lemons, halved

4 cups mixed greens and your favorite veggies

Olive oil or preferred salad dressing

Preheat the grill to medium heat. Begin by slicing each chicken breast horizontally, opening it like a book. Place each piece between two pieces of plastic wrap and, using a meat mallet, pound the pieces until they’re about half an inch thick. Brush each paillard with half a tablespoon of olive oil.

Grill the chicken pieces for about 3 to 5 minutes per side, adjusting based on thickness. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice while grilling. Place the

lemon halves, cut side down, on the grill to caramelize.

Set the chicken and grilled lemons aside to rest when done. Toss the greens and veggies with lemon juice and your choice of olive oil or dressing.

To serve, place a grilled chicken paillard on each plate, with a generous cup of the dressed salad. Squeeze the caramelized lemon over everything for an extra burst of flavor.

1 egg, beaten

1 1/4 Cup orange juice

3 Cups biscuit mix

1 Cup chopped nuts

Beat together sugar, egg, orange juice, and biscuit mix. Stir in nuts. Pour into greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hour. (Top of the bread will split)

TANGY CHICKEN

1 lb. chicken pieces

1/2 Cup flour

1 teaspoon salt

2 Tablespoons butter

1/2 Cup chopped celery

1 Cup water

2 Tablespoons brown sugar, packed

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1/2 Cup chopped onion

1 Cup ketchup

Combine flour and salt; roll chicken pieces in flour mixture to coat. Fry in skillet in hot oil until browned on all sides. In a small bowl, combine melted butter, chopped celery, water, brown sugar, pepper, onion, and ketchup; pour over chicken in skillet. Cover and simmer 30 minutes, or until thick and celery and onion are tender.

EASY STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE TRIFLE SERVES 10

1 pkg (3.4oz) Jell-O Vanilla

Flavor Instant Pudding

1-1/2 Cups milk2 Cups Cool Whip, divided

1 prepared angel food cake (10 inches) cut into 2 inch pieces

3 Cups fresh strawberries, sliced

Beat pudding mix and milk in a medium bowl with a whisk for 2 minutes. Stir in 1-1/2 Cups Cool Whip. Place half the cake pieces in a large serving bowl; top with layers of half each of the pudding mixture and strawberries. repeat all layers. Top with remaining 1/2 Cup of Cool Whip. Refrigerate for one hour and enjoy!

news! Two comic legends are contemplating selfimposed retirement.

First up is Steve Martin, five-time Grammy Award winner (two for banjoplaying) and honorary Oscar recipient, who is now in his third season of “Only Murders in the Building.” Steve turned 78 on Aug. 14, which may have brought this decision on. He is currently married to his second wife, writer Anne Stringfield, and became a firsttime father at 67 in 2012.

Steve candidly admitted to Yahoo! Entertainment, “When I was younger, I was selfish and focused on my career. Now I’m just hanging around the house playing with [my daughter]. ... When [“Only Murders”] is done, I’m not going to seek [other work]. I have a family life that’s really fun.”

During club dates, Steve used to tell a joke about a guy who asked him, “Do you mind if I smoke?” Steve would say, “Not at all. Mind if I fart?” But when I ran into Steve one day at lunch, I said I had the perfect topper for his joke and told him he could use it, which he did: “Do you mind if I smoke?” “Not at all. Mind if I fart? At least mine’s a natural thing!”

The second comedy legend talking retirement is Jim Carrey (61), who confessed, “Well, I’m retiring. ... I’m being fairly serious. ... If the angels bring me some script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue

Carrey has a 36-yearold daughter. His last two films were “Sonic the Hedgehog” (2020), which cost $90 million and grossed $320 million, and its 2022 sequel, which cost $110 million and grossed $405 million. They weren’t “Jim Carrey films,” though, so that may be why he’s wishing for a heavenly script.

Sad to report that one of Tim Allen’s sons in “Home Improvement,” Zachery Ty Bryan, now 41, has run afoul of the law again. He is facing two felony charges and one misdemeanor charge, and is due in an Oregon court on Sept. 5. Bryan was arrested on July 28 for domestic abuse and one charge of assault in the fourth degree for abusing his fiancee, Johnnie Faye Cartwright. Cartwright is the mother of three of his children; in all, he’s fathered seven children.

Bryan was arrested back in 2020 for attempted strangulation and assault (also involving Cartwright). He made a plea deal and was sentenced to 36 months of probation, along with mandatory participation in a batterer intervention program. He also had DUI arrests in 2004, 2007, 2017 and 2020, and has been accused of jilting investors in a crypto scheme. If anyone ever needed “Home Improvement,” it’s him!
