This calendar will run each week in the Sunday Reminder and as space permits in the West Central Tribune e-edition, Monday through Saturday. To have your event included please email news@ wctrib.com or mail it to Kit Grode, West Central Tribune, PO Box 839, Willmar, MN 56201. Include all information and the name and phone number of the person submitting it. You will be called to confirm the information.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19)

Your Arian leadership qualities can help bring order out of confusion, whether it’s on the job or at home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a job-linked issue could help provide better insight into persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double talk.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20)

Taking some time off could be the best way to get through a seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sagging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure that you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view.

LEO (July 23 to August 22)

A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If they don’t ask for help, be sure that you step up and make the first move.

Also, check out a new career possibility.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made by the other side. But hang in there. Others should line up with you once they learn the facts.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Offering to help a colleague is commendable. But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if this person’s situation is all that they have led you to believe it is.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You should soon be seeing positive results

from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assignment.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was

worthwhile. Make time for family this weekend.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-themuds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary.

BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making everyone you know -- or even just met -- feel important and welcome in your life.

Celebrate Independence Day with a classic blueberry cherry buckle

This week we have the perfect summer dessert for Independence Day.

Picture this: a bowl of warm, freshly baked Blueberry Cherry Buckle. Each spoonful blends tart and sweet, vanilla and butter, perfectly complemented by a scoop of cool, creamy vanilla ice cream melting into the warm dessert. It’s a slice of nostalgia, evoking memories of simpler times and Grandma’s kitchen.

A buckle is a traditional American dessert with a cake-like batter and fruit, usually berries, baked until the batter rises and the fruit “buckles,” or sinks, creating a rustic appearance.

The name “buckle” comes from this effect.

This delightful buckle brings together the patriotic colors of red, white and blue, making it a perfect dessert for Independence Day. Historically, buckles were a practical way to use up fresh, seasonal fruit, making them a beloved part of homebaking traditions. They are similar to other fruit desserts like cobblers and crisps, but the key difference is the cakelike batter that envelops the fruit, creating a moist, tender crumb that pairs perfectly with the juicy fruit. This delightful dessert is cherished for its simplicity, versatility and the comforting, homey feel it brings to

the table. Here’s how to make this easy yet impressive dessert:

Yield: 4 to 6

1 cup fresh or frozen cherries

Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Preheat your oven to 375 F and position a rack in the center. Place the butter in a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan and put the pan in the oven. Once the butter has melted, take the pan out of the oven.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Add the milk and vanilla, stirring to combine. It’s OK if the batter is a bit lumpy. Pour the batter into the pan with the melted butter and gently stir with a spoon. Make sure to leave some visible streaks of melted butter, as these will create delicious, buttery, caramelized edges. Evenly distribute the blueberries and cherries over the batter. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Be sure not to remove it too early, as the buckle may collapse in the center. Wait until it’s golden and set in the middle. Let the buckle cool on a rack for 10 minutes before serving warm with a scoop of ice cream.

Make It Your Own

The beauty of a buckle lies in its versatility. While blueberries and cherries create a wonderful patriotic theme, you can substitute other

fruits as long as they total 2 full cups. Here are some delicious alternatives:

-- Peaches and Raspberries: For a juicy, fragrant combination.

-- Strawberries and Blackberries: Offering a lovely balance of sweetness and tartness.

-- Just Blueberries: The classic buckle, simple and delicious.

-- Rhubarb Strawberry Buckle: Mixed chopped rhubarb with sliced strawberries offer another perfect balance of tart and sweet.

-- Blackberry Peach Buckle: Pair slightly tart blackberries with juicy sliced peaches to create a lovely summertime flavor combination. No matter which fruits you choose, this old-fashioned dessert is sure to bring a touch of nostalgia and a whole lot of joy to your Independence Day celebrations. So, gather your loved ones and enjoy the warm, comforting flavors of this homemade treat as you watch the fireworks light up the sky. Happy Fourth of July!

Decorated Tiles

Artus Van Briggle and his wife, Anne, were decorators at the Rookwood Pottery in Ohio. They moved to Colorado after Artus was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and he opened his own pottery there, the Van Briggle Pottery, in 1901.

After Artus died in 1904, Anne took over the pottery. Van Briggle Pottery is known for its art nouveau vases with abstract flower shapes or graceful human figures in a single rich color, subtly varied shades or tonal gradients of matte glazes. The glazes were Artus’ passion, inspired by centuries-old Chinese pottery.

This tile, which sold for $2,125 at a Rago auction, shows another side of the pottery. The subject matter of a few trees in a landscape may have been influenced by Artus’ training as a painter in Europe before his career in ceramics. The shapes in the background may have been inspired by the mountain scenery of Colorado.

The scene was created with the cuenca technique for decorating tiles. Spanish for “basin,”

cuenca involves molding a design onto the tile before it is fired, leaving shapes outlined with raised lines. The shapes are then flooded with glaze; the raised lines keep the different glazes separate.

Q: I’m looking for some advice on selling antique Coca-Cola items. I have some 1920s brown bottles, lithographed cardboard signs from 1948 to the 1950s, and mirrors from the 1970s to 1980s.

A: Coca-Cola syrup was invented by pharmacist Dr. John Stith Pemberton. The first glass of CocaCola was sold at a soda fountain in Atlanta in 1886. Coca-Cola has become one of the world’s most recognized brands. Thousands of Coca-Cola advertising items have been made and are popular collectibles today. There is even a club for collectors, the Coca-Cola Collectors Club (website:

Late author/filmmaker Michael Crichton (1942-2008)

Q: Is it true that Michael Crichton has a new book coming out? I thought he passed away years ago. -- E.M.

A: “Jurassic Park” author Michael Crichton died in 2008 of cancer at the age of 66. He graduated from Harvard Medical School, but followed his passion for writing and developing novels, films and television shows (“ER”).

According to People magazine, Crichton’s widow, Sherri, has been searching for a writer to finish the incomplete manuscript that her husband left behind. She found that writer in bestselling author James Patterson. Crichton was fascinated by volcanoes and provided “meticulous notes” on what he started, so Patterson and Sherri worked together in a “joyful collaboration” that included “intense research on volcanology to make sure the book retained Crichton’s signature gripping momentum and rigorous scientific accuracy.”

The finished novel, “Eruption,” is now available for purchase in stores and online, and there’s a really good

chance it’ll be on the big screen someday, too. ***

Q: Whatever happened to the planned sequel to Waiting to Exhale”? I know there was a follow-up novel, which I really enjoyed, but I was hoping to see the cast reunite for the film. -- K.K.

A: You’re correct that a sequel was in the works based on Terry McMillan’s book “Getting to Happy,” which was the sequel to her novel “Waiting to Exhale.” Unfortunately,

the project was canceled after the tragic death of one of its stars, Whitney

The good news is Rochon and Devine are part of the ensemble cast of “Terry McMillan Presents: Tempted by Love,” an upcoming romance movie for Lifetime, starring Garcelle Beauvais (“The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”). Beauvais will play a famous chef who falls for a handsome young man 20 years her junior. The movie sounds reminiscent of another McMillan novelturned-movie “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.”

The original film will premiere on Lifetime on Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. ET.

HOLLYWOOD — Ninety-year-old Oscar winner and former “Rat Packer” Shirley MacLaine is one of the last four living stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood, along with Jane Fonda, Sophia Loren and Robert Redford. MacLaine has recently completed her 65th film, “A Family Affair,” with Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and Kathy Bates. It hits Netflix on June 28.

She’s also shooting her 66th film, “People Not Places” with Stephen Dorff, in New Jersey. ***

Oscar winner Will Smith’s comeback film (post-Oscar slap) “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” made over $200 million during its first two weeks (against its $100 million cost). Smith snuck into a theater showing in Baldwin Hills, California, and when patrons discovered him there, they went wild with praise for him. “Bad Boys for Life” grossed $426.5 million in 2020, and this sequel is poised to beat it.

Chris Rock made $40 million from two specials on Netflix because

of the Oscar slap, and Smith is back from exile in only two years. Next for Smith is “I Am Legend 2” with Michael B. Jordan. ***

In order to leave 007 behind, Daniel Craig is sporting a new un-Bondlike, long-hair look in the upcoming “Knives Out” sequel “Wake Up Dead Man.” His co-stars are Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, Josh Brolin and Josh O’ Connor. The original “Knives Out” grossed $312.9 million, while its sequel only grossed $15 million before dropping on Netflix. The “threequel” will probably go straight to Netflix, but we’ll have to wait until 2025 to see it. ***

Billy Zane (of “Titanic” fame) is currently channeling Marlon Brando in the upcoming film “Waltzing with Brando,” based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Bernard Judge. His co-stars are Jon Heder, Tia Carrere, Richard Dreyfuss and Rob Corddry, and the film was actually shot on the island Brando owned,

called Tetiaroa. In 1989, I encountered Brando at South African singer Miriam Makeba’s opening at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in the Ambassador Hotel. I asked Brando if he’d smile for my camera. He asked, “Why?” I told him that I’d never seen a photo of him smiling, which made him smile. Inside the club, I shot photos of him with Eartha Kitt and Jane Russell, and he showed my lens a lot of teeth, saying, “See? I’m smiling!” Those photos were seen around the world, which made me really, really “$mile!”

The delightful Emma Thompson has Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine and Molly Gordon as her co-stars in the comedy “Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie.” The film is about her flock of friends who must solve the murder of a sheep shepherd (Jackman), and it isn’t due until February 2026. They’re calling them “a baaaaad A-list ensemble cast!” © 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.
