Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by firing up the grill and treating your friends and family to something truly special. This year let’s skip the typical hot dogs and basic burgers and impress your family and friends with a crowdpleasing classic straight from the heartland: Minnesota’s Juicy Lucy burger.

The Juicy Lucy isn’t just any burger -- it’s a flavorpacked, molten-cheesefilled masterpiece. It’s always a favorite that will have your guests coming back for seconds (and maybe thirds).

Hailing from the vibrant food scene of Minneapolis, this iconic burger has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. And the best part? It’s quite affordable and easier to make than you might think, allowing you to bring restaurant-quality dining to your backyard without breaking the bank.

Why the Juicy Lucy?

When it comes to holiday celebrations, especially ones as laid-back as Labor Day, we want food that’s both fun and delicious. The Juicy Lucy fits the bill perfectly. Imagine biting into a perfectly grilled beef patty, only to discover a gooey, cheesy surprise hidden within. It’s a burger that’s as enjoyable to eat as it is to make -- and it’s sure to be the talk of your gathering.

Diva Tip: For that irresistible molten center, only American cheese will do. This is one time I recommend the processed stuff! And to keep your Lucy juicy, opt for ground beef with at least 15% fat. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you. Remember, this isn’t health food -- it’s a

holiday indulgence! We don’t eat like this every day.

At least, I hope you don’t! Either way, eat two salads next week for balance.

MINNESOTA’S JUICY LUCY BURGER

Yield: 4 burgers

Total Time: 25 mins

1 1/2 pounds ground beef

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon black pepper

3/4 teaspoon garlic salt

4 slices American cheese (such as Kraft)

4 hamburger buns, split Sliced pickles, for serving In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, pepper and garlic salt until well mixed. Form the mixture into eight thin patties, making half slightly larger than the other half. Stack the cheese slices and cut them into four squares. Place one cheese stack in the center of each larger beef patty, then cover with a smaller patty. Roll the edges of the larger patty over the smaller one, tightly pinching to seal around the cheese. Seal tightly to avoid any cheese oozing out during cooking! Heat your grill or a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 4 minutes on each side, ensuring they are wellbrowned. A meat thermometer inserted into the

center should read at least 160 F (70 C). Serve on hamburger buns with pickles.

While Juicy Lucy purists may forgo condiments, feel free to customize your burger with your favorite toppings. Want to be a real rebel? Add some sauteed mushrooms and onions -just don’t tell the folks in Minnesota I suggested that!

This Labor Day, skip the expensive restaurant meal or basic burger and create your own unforgettable dining experience at home. The Juicy Lucy burger is not only fun to make, but also a great way to save money while treating your family and friends to something special. After all, holidays are about making memories. And is there a better way to do that than with a sizzling, cheesy burger fresh off the grill? I think not.

large pot of water to a boil over high heat. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain well and Wipe the pot clean. Meanwhile, whisk cream cheese, mustard, lemon zest, onion powder, pepper and 1/8 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Gradually whisk in half-and-half. Heat oil in the pot over medium-high heat. Add scallions and the remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt; cook, stirring constantly, until softened, about 3 minutes. Add spinach and garlic; cook, stirring constantly, until the spinach is bright green and wilted, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Add the pasta, the cream cheese mixture and 1/2 cup fontina; stir to combine. Gently stir in lemon juice. Transfer to the prepared baking dish; top with the remaining 1/2 cup fontina. Cover tightly with foil. Bake until warmed through and slightly bubbling around the edges, 15 to 20 minutes. Garnish with additional pepper and lemon zest, if desired.

all sides, about 8 minutes total. Transfer steak to a plate. In same skillet over medium heat, heat remaining 1 Tablespoon oil. Cook bell peppers, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and ginger and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute more. Return beef to skillet and add sauce; season with salt and pepper, if needed. Cook, stirring, until sauce is glossy, about 2 minutes more. Divide rice among plates. Spoon steak mixture over.

Antique glass

Identifying antique glass isn’t always easy. If you’re lucky, a piece may be marked, like this Phanomen vase, which is signed “Loetz Austria” on its pontil (the spot on the base where the blown molten glass was attached to a pontil for shaping).

Proof of its maker, not to mention its complex shape and silvery iridescent sheen, brought its price to $4,940 at a Rago/ Wright auction. But glass isn’t always marked. While it can take an expert to authenticate glass, it’s helpful to be able to recognize some of the characteristic shapes and colors made by particular glassmakers.

Loetz received patents for iridescent glass in 1895 and 1896, shortly after Tiffany launched the fashion with its famous Favrile glass. Loetz produced several lines of iridescent glass, and Phanomen was its triumph, winning a Grand Prix award at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1900. It combines the beauty of iridescence with the technical expertise required to create its organic shapes and silvery pulled threads.

Q: I inherited some ivory from my grandmother. I know there are lots of restrictions and regulations on selling or trading ivory. I was pointed to you to see if you can help. I’m not looking to keep it.

A: Federal laws concerning ivory have been amended over time, and state laws can vary. Check with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (www. fws.gov) and your state’s department of fish and wildlife for the current laws. If you want to sell your ivory, you may need proof of what type of animal the ivory came from.

An appraiser, an auction house that sells ivory, or an art or natural history museum in your area may be able to help. You may also need to know and be able to prove the item’s age, or have documentation, like a dated photo, that shows when it was originally acquired or how long you have had it.

TIP: Be sure that any restorer, refinisher or upholsterer working on your antique is insured.

Q: Why did Disney+ cancel “The Acolyte”?

I thought it was supposed to be the next big thing. — A.O.

A: You’re correct in that there was a lot of buzz surrounding the newest series in the “Star Wars” universe, but unfortunately, it didn’t translate into ratings. The people who did watch the show praised it, especially Manny Jacinto’s performance as the Stranger. Alas, the finale of the first season became its last when the numbers just weren’t up to Disney’s expectations.

Q: When does the new “Matlock” series that stars Kathy Bates release? Also, is her character related to the original Matlock, played by Andy Griffith? — C.U.

A: In the original series, Andy Griffith played a sharp criminal defense attorney named Ben Matlock. The upcoming series of the same name, starring Kathy Bates, is a reboot with a twist. Her character, also an attorney, is named Madeline Matlock, but there’s no relation to Griffith’s character.

According to USA Today, the show’s executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman (“Jane the Virgin”) says that she wanted to “write about how older women are overlooked in society.” She explained, “I

CELEBRITY EXTRA

wanted the audience to enjoy being shocked by the underestimation.” Also similar to the “Matlock” we loved back in the ‘80s, the 2024 series features a new case that keeps you guessing the whole week. Madeline Matlock is “a fish out of water [and] a mastermind,” according to Snyder Urman. “Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you can’t be a bad b*tch,” she emphasized. Supporting Bates is a stellar cast that includes Beau Bridges (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Skye P. Marshall (“Good Sam”), and Jason Ritter (“A Million Little Things”). “Matlock” will have a sneak preview of its first episode on Sept. 22 on CBS and will continue on in its regular time slot of Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET, beginning Oct. 17.

Q: When is the last episode of “The Talk”? I thought it was canceled, but I heard it’s coming back this fall with new episodes. — S.I.

A: Yes, CBS announced that the daytime talk show was being canceled after 15 years, but fortunately, it will include one last season of new episodes this fall before its “celebratory send-off” in December. These new live shows will air weekdays, beginning Sept. 9, with returning hosts Sheryl Underwood, Natalie Morales, Jerry

O’Connell, Akbar Gbajabiamila and Amanda Kloots. The show was created in 2010 by Sara Gilbert (“Roseanne”), and she hosted along with Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, Julie Chen Moonves, and Sharon Osbourne. In a surprising turn of events, it’s reported that a new daytime soap will take over the show’s time slot next January. (“The Talk” originally took the place of the long-running CBS soap “As the World Turns” after it

was canceled in 2009.)

Created by Michele Val Jean (who has written for “The Bold and the Beautiful”), “The Gates” will center around an upper-class African-American family living in a gated community. © 2024 King Features Synd., Inc. Send me your questions
