Why I belong "It’s more about the relationships than the membership. The connections and the friendships I have made over the years have helped many understand what we do in emergency medical services. Those connections have also helped me on a personal level. It’s very true that you get out of the Chamber what you put into it. I am glad that I invested the time and hope more people realize the investment pays you back in more ways than you can imagine."

Why I belong "Over our many years of membership, WLACC has kept us on top of the important, everchanging issues within our marketplace. Due to the demands of owning a small business, it is difficult to keep up with the issues impacting business. Also, WLACC has been very helpful in networking and meeting people who share an interest in serving the community. It’s wonderful being part of a “team” of people who want to promote the growth and prosperity of the local economy."

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Change plays a big role as people ring in a new year. At the dawn of a new year, some people resolve to live healthier in the months ahead while others might make financial resolutions in an attempt to improve their bottom lines. The decision to change jobs is another popular resolution at the dawn of a new year. Professionals change jobs for various reasons. But regardless of what's behind a career change, many people can benefit by looking for things in a new job that can make them happy both professionally and personally. Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don't overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead

should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road. Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you're looking for a new job because you're burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. Satisfaction: When attempting to achieve a better work/life balance, it can be easy to overlook satisfaction at work in exchange for more time at home. But studies have shown that feeling satisfied by what you do can have a profound impact on your

overall happiness. It's possible to find an engaging career that still affords you time away from work, and such a career can ultimately pave the way toward a happier life. Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don't commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life. Many people aspire to find a new job at the dawn of a new year. Job seekers should consider a host of factors before switching jobs to make sure they make the best decisions.

CULTURE IS SO IMPORTANT, WE BUILT OUR CORE VALUES AROUND IT We have seven core cultural values that drive the way we work together because we believe when you love what you do, you do better work. HAVE FUN

BE INNOVATIVE

The more passion you have for your job, the more likely you are to enjoy it. The more fun you are having, the more successful you will be and the more successful we will be. Fun means different things to different people, but at the heart of it is positivity. Express yourself in a way that is real to you, and don’t be afraid to laugh out loud.

Our company has a strong tradition that we aim to build upon. But to move forward in a media world, we have to be willing to stretch our minds and our ideas beyond what’s comfortable. That’s where innovation comes in. To be innovative, we need to challenge each other and never refuse to make time to brainstorm new, creative ideas.

WORK TOGETHER Success has not and will not come from one newspaper, one department, nor one person alone. We need a true spirit of collaboration to move forward in a way that’s sustainable. That means finding the common ground with our fellow employees and relying on each other’s strengths and talents to create a stronger, well-rounded company for the future.

LISTEN TO OTHERS Every employee has a voice. No matter how big or small the issue, we are committed to listening. This is essential in creating a culture where employees feel valued. It’s also essential to making our environment a place where people feel safe and supported — all of which are necessary as we move forward.

COMPETITIVE PTO We know work-life balance is important, which is why we offer a great paid time off and paid holiday package (that includes your birthday!) so you can take time away from the office. We'll miss you, though!

COMPREHENSIVE BENEFITS

BE RESPECTFUL It’s simple. All employees are valuable and all employees deserve respect. This company was built on that virtue. We create a culture of respect through honest and direct communication and through compassion for our fellow employees. At FCC, there is no place for arrogance or rude behavior.

ENGAGE YOURSELF It’s important to be invested in your job and to find passion in what you do. When you take ownership of your work, you are more likely to succeed. You are also more likely to have fun.

FIND BALANCE Work hard, but work smart, too. When the day is done, go home and do the things that bring you satisfaction. FCC recognizes that our work demands a great deal of time away from our loved ones, but we will strive to help with the balance and integration of work and family.

Healthy employees make for a healthy workplace. We offer it all -- medical, dental vision, life insurance, EAP services and parental leave.

401K We understand that despite all these amazing benefits, you'll probably want to retire some day. And we've got you covered for that, too.

VARIETY & OPPORTUNITY Variety is the spice of life -- and of your career, too! We have a wide range of positions across all lines of work, which means ample opportunity to try out different paths on your journey to the perfect career. Hint: You've found it!

WELLNESS PROGRAMS We care about the health and wellbeing of our employees, which is why we offer perks like wellness classes, flu shots and more. We help you take care of you.

PHILANTHROPY We believe in giving back to our communities, which is why every full-time employee gets paid volunteer hours to spend with a local non-profit in need.

HOW TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN QUALITY EMPLOYEES Great employees are the backbone of successful businesses. Savvy business owners recognize the important role workers play in helping a business meet its goals, and recruiting and retaining such employees is a high priority for the world's most successful firms. According to the recruitment resource Betterteam, 68 percent of human resources professionals report problems filling positions - an increase of 50 percent since 2013. Forbes magazine puts the potential cost of a single bad hire between $25,000 and $50,000. New employees are investments and due diligence should be used to find the right ones. Recruiting top talent may require thinking creatively, and it almost always requires significant effort on the part of the business doing the hiring. Write a well-crafted job ad The job advertisement is the first thing jon seekers will see and it will be the initial tool to help whittle down the applicant pool. Use clear job titles that explain the job and

be concise; avoid buzzwords like "wizard," "rock star" or "ninja." Candidates tend to skim job descriptions, so avoid wordy phrasing and confusing job roles. Break down responsibilities into job duties, and be sure to mention specific make-or-break skills applicants will need to have. While you still may get some unqualified individuals to apply, you may weed out others with specifics of the job. Establish a list of traits you want new employees to possess An applicant's skills, education and experience are important. However, this should not be the only factor to consider when mulling a potential hire. Seek employees who have the potential for growth and can get along with colleagues and existing and new clients. Use various job boards to advertise Many popular job boards, such as Indeed, Monster, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor, offer free advertising for job posters. They are good places to start because they generate lots of traffic. Social media also can work much in the same way as free

job boards, according to Workable, a recruitment software company. If you don't find success with free job boards, you may need to go elsewhere. Attend job fairs and utilize interns Building a community connection through local job fairs, networking with alumni organizations, and relationships with universities, trade schools and colleges can provide constant resources for new talent. Plus, applicants may feel more comfortable working for a company that has outreach in the local area. Follow up on references It may take time, but it's important that references are contacted and previous employment is confirmed. Due diligence with a candidate's references ensures companies get a bigger picture of potential hires, according to Indeed. Ask questions like "What is it like to work with the candidate?" or "What are their biggest strengths and weaknesses?" Finding quality talent is an important task that's vital to the success of businesses big and small.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB The notion of relaxing on a beach all day in one's golden years is still a retirement dream for millions of adults across the globe. But many individuals also harbor a desire to keep working after retiring. Whether it's a volunteering gig or a part-time job retirees are looking for, certain qualities can make an opportunity uniquely suited to a post-retirement job. Flexibility: Retirees may be looking to contribute to their communities or simply earn a little spending money, but they will likely still want the freedom to travel or spend time with their families whenever they choose. So flexibility is something to look for in a post-retirement job. This is what makes consultant work so attractive to retirees. In-person hours may not be required of consultants, who can then offer their input while visiting their grandchildren or traveling the world. Socialization: Though the ability to work from home can make it easier for retirees to earn some extra money, some seniors aren't concerned about their finances

but want to work so they can get out of the house. In that case, look for a job that offers the opportunity to socialize and meet new people. Socializing as an older adult is a great way to fend off loneliness. In addition, one study published in 2007 in the journal of the American Public Health Association found that social support networks have a positive effect on cognition among older adults. So a post-retirement job that enables retirees to socialize could delay or reduce the severity of age-related cognitive decline. Engagement: A job seniors find engaging also is more likely to provide the types of benefits seniors are looking for in post-retirement work. For example, researchers at Boston College's Sloan Center on Aging and Work found that seniors who find a job or volunteering opportunity truly engaging are more likely to benefit psychologically from those experiences than those whose postretirement work is not engaging. If seniors find themselves simply going through the

motions with their post-retirement work, they can look for opportunities that they can be more enthusiastic about. Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders. The right post-retirement job may differ from what individuals looked for during their careers. Various qualities can combine to make for a post-retirement gig that benefits seniors in myriad ways.

THE PROS AND CONS OF SMALL TALK IN A JOB INTERVIEW Typically, job interviews begin with a bit of small talk on a casual topic such as traffic, the weather or current events before progressing into a more professional discussion between the candidate and hiring manager. In some cases, this informal conversation leads to talk about something other than the job. Here’s what you should know about chatting during an interview.

THE PROS Casual conversation, especially at the beginning of an interview, can help break the ice and make both parties feel more comfortable. It can also provide an opportunity for you to find common ground with the interviewer. Having shared interests or knowing some of the same people as the recruiter can make you more memorable and increase your chances of being hired. Chatting casually also allows you to show

your interpersonal skills, which are important in most professional scenarios.

THE CONS Small talk can lead to misunderstandings and disagreements, even if the topic seems benign. For example, plans for an upcoming holiday can lead to discomfort when it becomes clear that you have different religious beliefs. Or, a seemingly harmless joke could be problematic if it concerns a topic that the interviewer takes seriously. Depending on the circumstances, chatting during a job interview can either help or hinder your chances of getting hired. Be sure to stick to safe topics and always try to steer the conversation back to more professional matters.

HOW TO ACE A VIRTUAL JOB INTERVIEW During the COVID-19 pandemic, employers have had to adapt their hiring processes to limit the spread of the virus. Since in-person meetings aren’t recommended, most have opted to speak with candidates over the phone or by video chat.

IF YOU HAVE A VIRTUAL JOB INTERVIEW COMING UP, HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP ENSURE IT GOES WELL.

CHECK YOUR DEVICES

WEAR BUSINESS ATTIRE

STAY FOCUSED

Among other things, make sure the right video conferencing software is installed on your computer. You should also confirm that your webcam, microphone and headphones are working and that you charge your laptop or set it up near a power source. Also, be sure to find a spot in your home with a strong internet connection. By ensuring that you’re ready a few hours before the interview, you’ll help calm your nerves and reduce the risk of something going wrong.

Dress as though you’re going to a traditional interview. You might not be leaving your home, but you still need to make a good impression. That being said, you can forgo a few details like socks, shoes and perfume or cologne. Additionally, make sure you’re set up in a well-lit space and that nothing unsightly or embarrassing can be seen behind you. Before the interview starts, close the door to keep out pets and children.

Whether it’s to quickly search for something on your second monitor or read an incoming text message, the recruiter is sure to notice if your gaze shifts to something off screen. This will make you look distracted and can come across as disrespectful. To ensure this doesn’t happen, put away other devices and do your research beforehand. You should also keep a pad nearby to take notes so the other person doesn’t hear you typing. Finally, remember to thank the interviewer for their time, and be sure to send a followup email the next day to reaffirm your interest in the position. HOT JOBS COOL COMPANIES | 12

BOOST YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING A NEW JOB The recruiting strategist ERE Recruiting Intelligence estimates that 250 résumés are submitted for each corporate job opening, and the first submission occurs within 200 seconds after a position is posted. In such an environment, procrastination can be costly.

THE “HIRING FUNNEL”

Recruiters use a specific model for every job posting. Informally dubbed the “hiring funnel,” this is a reference to the number of total applications they need to generate in order to get a single hire. On average of the 1,000 who see an online job posting, 200 will begin the application process, 100 will actually follow through and only 25 résumés will be screened out, according to Talent Function Group, LLC. Among that final 25, between four and six will ultimately be invited for an interview.

BE CREATIVE WITH A RÉSUMÉ

Hundreds of people are vying for the same job, and human resources personnel who review applicants may spend 10 seconds reading over each résumé. As a result, it is essential to make a résumé stand out. Areas most perused on a résumé include job titles, companies worked for, start/end dates, and education. Make

sure these key areas are visible and impressive. Also, many résumés are scanned electronically, meaning if you do not format a résumé the correct way or use the applicable software mentioned (often PDF formatting is rejected), the résumé may never get flagged and seen.

NETWORK RESPONSIBLY

Always connect with people you think can bring career benefits in some way rather than blindly networking. Keep your social media image professional as well, as you never know where a good lead or networking opportunity may come from.

DRESS THE PART

If you’re one of the lucky ones who earn an interview, keep the good momentum going by dressing in a manner that is appropriate for the

role in which you are interviewing. Tidy hair, clean fingernails, minimal jewelry, classic attire, and a pleasant attitude can make a difference.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Always conduct background research on the company you’re interviewing with and the industry it’s a part of. This way you’ll be better apt to answer any questions that come your way. Don’t be afraid to also prepare questions that you can ask the interviewer to show your interest.

CONSIDER TEMP JOBS

Rejections will certainly happen as you go along, but do not sit idly licking your wounds. A temporary position is better than being unemployed and can get your foot in the door. Work with a recruiter who may be able to place you in temp jobs, especially positions with an employer you have your eye on.

THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK IN AN INTERVIEW Interviews aren’t only a chance for potential employers to get to know you better, they’re also an opportunity to determine if the job is a good fit for you. Here are three insightful questions to ask the hiring manager during your next interview.

1 2

3

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE IN THIS POSITION? This is a great question to ask in an interview as it will help you determine what you’re going to be doing and what’s expected of you. It can also help define which skills are required for the job. DOES THIS POSITION OFFER OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT? This question can help you determine if there are any opportunities for growth within the company. Additionally, it indicates to the hiring manager that you’re serious about your career and interested in long-term employment. WHERE DO YOU THINK THE COMPANY IS HEADED IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? Asking this question can help you gain insight into the company’s general plans for the future and determine if there’s room to grow. It can also give you a sense of how stable the job might be in the coming years. Asking a few questions at the end of an interview is a simple way to show your enthusiasm about the job and gather the facts you need to make an informed decision. THREE MODERN HIRING STRATEGIES THAT WORK

1

2

3

SHOOT A VIDEO Research indicates that job postings that include videos are viewed more often and have higher application rates than those that don’t. In addition, recruitment videos are easier to share on social media than job postings. The video can be humorous, inspiring, informative or whatever best suits your company’s aims.

HARNESS THE POWER OF AI There are a number of software programs that use artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline or automate the hiring process, including sourcing candidates, screening resumes and shortlisting applicants. These programs allow recruiters to use their time more efficiently and identify the most exceptional candidates for a given role.

RECRUIT CANDIDATES ONLINE Nowadays, most businesses understand the importance of recruiting online via company websites and social media platforms. However, you should also consider having a presence on industry forums, message boards and blogs. This allows you to discover and engage with potential candidates in an informal environment.

In addition to using these hiring strategies, you may also want to consider hosting a recruitment event such as a barbecue, a conference, a hackathon or a speed networking event. If you use these methods, you’re likely to improve your chances of landing your dream candidate. Advertisement

FIVE TIPS FOR WRITING AN EFFECTIVE COVER LETTER You’ve stumbled onto an amazing job posting, you have all the right qualifications and your resumé is impeccable. The catch? The cover letter. The following tips will help you shine if you have a hard time writing this type of letter.

1 2

Be brief. Summarize what you want to say in one page. Remember that recruiters receive dozens of letters and only spend a short time on each one. Be clear and specific. Avoid long, convoluted sentences, and give examples. Mention numbers if you’ve managed a major project; describe an experience where you demonstrated organizational skills rather than just saying you’re a well-organized person.

3

Don’t repeat your resumé. If a cover letter is required, it’s certainly not meant for you to mindlessly repeat the contents of your CV. Explain who you are, why the position and the company interest you, and why you should be considered for the job. The challenge is to do all that without bragging.

4

Don’t talk only about yourself. A cover letter should also put some emphasis on the enterprise. Demonstrate that you’re familiar with the company; talk about its needs and the fact that you would be a valuable addition to their workforce.

5

Perfect your writing and presentation. Use your best writing skills and avoid pompous words. Use the vocabulary of your profession and check that there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Leave plenty of space between paragraphs and use a legible font size of at least 10 points.

One last tip: Make sure to grab your potential employer’s attention with your first sentence. The idea is to make him or her want to continue reading it instead of just going on to the next application.

WE VALUE OUR EMPLOYEES

At West Central Steel we know the importance of having the right people on our team. As a family‐owned company, we value our employees and know our success is tied to their success. We help manufacturers and fabricators grow their businesses by providing carbon steel distribution and parts processing. Our business started in 1949 as a steel scrap yard. Since then we have evolved to a leading steel distributor and parts manufacturer. By focusing on our customer’s needs we have built a reputation for being responsive, reliable, and innovative.

As a steel distributor, we purchase steel from steel mills throughout the country by truckload, railcar, or barge load. Then sell the steel to manufacturers and fabricators in the five-state area. Many times, the steel is delivered the next day. This allows customers to save money with reduced inventory and lower material handling costs. Our parts processing capabilities include saw, torch, plasma and laser cutting for both flat and three-dimensional steel shapes. In addition to cutting parts, parts can be formed with press brakes capable

of bending steel up to 1 inch thick at 30 feet wide.

We are continually growing and have done 9 expansions over time. In 2018, the company opened the largest expansion yet with an 85,000 square foot parts processing facility. The new facility contains cutting-edge technology to save customers time and money. As an example, we saved a manufacturer over 1,000 production hours over a year by using the latest technology to drill and tap over 30 holes on a part that was 7-foot by 10-foot and 1-inch thick, that they were previously drilling by hand. Investing in the future is integral to how we do business whether it is in our people, relationships, technology or the community. We are involved in many workforce development initiatives in the area. Kandiyohi Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (KCEO) and Manufacturing and Processing Careers (MAP) with area high schools are two key initiatives we sponsor. With manufacturing jobs in high demand, the programs expose high school students to great jobs in the community and strengthen the manufacturing base in the area.

We are proud members of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) and the North American Steel Alliance. Both organizations broaden the benefits that we deliver to our customers and employees. NETWORKING ADVICE WHEN IT COMES TO JOB HUNTING, IT’S ALL ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW. SO, HOW DOES ONE NETWORK EFFECTIVELY? HERE’S SOME ADVICE.

BEFORE

DURING

AFTER

Do your homework. Before going to a networking event, look up the event, the guests of honor, and the attendees, and do a little research (with the help of social media) on the people you’d like to meet. Determine your needs and create realistic goals for the event. Prepare a little introduction speech that highlights your best qualities. And don’t forget to bring a bunch of business cards.

During the event, adopt a positive attitude and go meet people. Approach them by asking yourself how you can help them, rather than seeing what you can gain from them. To this end, ask them about themselves first, with pertinent questions about their field and their needs. However, take care not to monopolize them — keep your conversations around 15 minutes. Afterward, make notes on business cards to help you remember the people, their needs, and the event where you met them.

Follow up, ideally starting the next day. Send out an email thanking the people you talked to and use their needs as an excuse when you can. For example, if someone was looking for a good interior designer and you know one, send them their contact information. Above all, stay in touch in order to maintain your network: share an interesting article or a job offer, invite the person to other networking events and find other ways to be helpful.

BUSINESS EDUCATION NETWORK This fall the Willmar Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce launched the Business Education Network (BEN) program in our area. The BEN program works to develop our community's future workforce by providing students with a deeper understanding of career opportunities and aligning skills with current workforce needs; engaging employers directly with students, education and training providers; and better aligning programs and curriculum to the realities of the West central Minnesota and overall MN economy. One facet of the BEN program is the CEO in the Classroom which allows business professionals the opportunity to engage with students, talk with them about their career choices here in the Willmar Lakes Area and how the decisions in high school will open future opportunities. The program is designed to show students that they are in control of their future educational goals through personal choice and education paths. The Willmar Public Schools welcomed

our business partners into the Willmar Middle School to present to the 8th grade students this fall and in January, DREAM Technical Academy welcomed us in to present to their student body. We are looking forward to presenting at Community Christian School in March. If you would like to see the BEN presentation at your school or become a business partner with the BEN program, please contact the program coordinator Jennifer Lindquist at bencoordinator@ willmarareachamber. com. Thank you to these businesses for presenting: Christianson PLLP, Heritage Bank, West Central Tribune, Employment Plus, Jennie-O, Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA, Marcus Construction, Kensington Insurance Agency, Nova-Tech Engineering LLC, United Way, and RELCO. We appreciate the opportunity to build the bridge between our schools and businesses in the Willmar Lakes Area.
