School District 92.5 Board President Carolyn Wilhight presented School District Persons of the Year awards to Darlene Calabrese and Shirlee Kribbs at the Celebrate Westchester event on January 23rd.

Tomorrow is February 2, 2016. For many just another day, except if it is your birthday, or anniversary of a special event, but to the rest of us who “BELIEVE” it is GROUNDHOG DAY. Every year on February 2nd all eyes are focused on Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to see if winter will have a hold on us for another 6 weeks. For those who do not know or remember what I am talking about here is the Legend of Punxsutawney Phil (Adapted from “Groundhog Day: 1886 to 1992” by Bill Anderson):

it as a sign of spring and stays above ground. Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers were Germans and they found groundhogs to in profusion in many parts of the state. They determined that the groundhog, resembling the European hedgehog, was a most intelligent and sensible animal and therefore decided that if the sun did appear on February 2nd, so wise an animal as the groundhog would see its shadow and hurry back into its underground home for another six weeks of winter. Punxsutawney Phil,as he is called is immortal. Well, practically. According to folklore, the furry oracle was born in 1886, making him 130 years old. The average groundhog lives less than 10 years, making Phil a statistical anomaly … or not. Fans of Punxsutawney Phil insist a magical “elixir of life” keep Phil looking youthful. (may be positive thinking)

Groundhog Day, February 2nd, is a popular tradition in the United States. It is also a legend that traverses centuries, its origins clouded in the mists of time with ethnic cultures and animals awakening on specific dates. Myths such as this tie our present to the distant past when nature did, indeed, influence our lives. It is the day that the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to Growing Fame From offering support of political events, to look for his shadow. If he sees his shadow, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks rooting for area sports teams, to becoming of bad weather and returns to his hole.
