CURRENT AND (MAYBE) FUTURE FIREMEN On Tuesday October 9th the Westchester Fire Department opened their doors to the residents and their families to see what is like to be a member of Westchester’s Emergency Services. In addition to being welcomed into the Department’s home, the younger guests were given the opportunity to take part in hands-on activities which included being able to experience what it like to travel with members of the Department in their Squad Transportation Vehicle. A Message from the Police Chief – Steven Stelter The holidays are right around the corner and the busiest travel season of the year will begin shortly. No matter what mode of travel you are taking, I want to be sure to advise you to please travel safely. With this being a heavy travel season there are several things you can do to help assure a safe trip for you and your family; and at the same time keep your home safe and secure. Here are a few travel tips to help during your travels: ➢ Notify a trusted neighbor or family member of your travel plans ➢ Secure all doors and windows ➢ Ensure your mail and newspapers are picked up daily ➢ Place lights on timers ➢ Call the police department to place a security check on your home BLACK FRIDAY The Westchester Police Department is dedicated to making all citizens as safe as possible as you shop from store to store in search of the best bargain you can find. Officers will be out in force patrolling the community during these busy shopping days. Your participation in making this a safe time is greatly desired. Here are a few reminders: ➢ Shop with friends and family – there is safety in numbers ➢ Park in well lit areas – be aware of your surroundings ➢ Place packages in your trunk – do not leave anything inside your vehicle out in plain view ➢ Do not carry excessive amounts of cash on your person ➢ Take extra precautions while using an ATM card “CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY (CPA)” I want to let everyone know that the police department will bring the Citizens Police Academy (CPA) back this January for those interested in attending. We will be conducting classes beginning Wednesday, January 16th from 6:30pm to 9:30pm and will meet every Wednesday evening; concluding with a graduation ceremony on March 20th. Those interested in attending will learn about the day-to-day operations of police work. Topics covered will be: Patrol Techniques, Terrorism, Self-Defense, Firearms, SWAT, Bomb Unit, Gangs & Drugs, Traffic Stops / DUI and Investigations just to name a few. Every student will also have the opportunity to do a ride-a-long with a patrol officer from the department. Applications are located on the police department website or can be picked up at the police department front desk. Those interested in attending need to be 18 years or older and a Westchester resident or business owner. Simply fill out an application and return it to the police department before January 9, 2019. Those applying will be subject to a criminal history check. I encourage you to attend with a neighbor, relative, child or spouse. The more the merrier. Should you have any further questions, please contact Officer Robert Verber at 708-345-0060 x440, or rverber@westchesterpolice.com. As I end my letter, I want to say to all the residents of Westchester that I hope each one of you has a wonderful Thanksgiving and please take a moment and touch someone close to you and tell them why you are thankful for them.

School District NOVEMBER 2018

A Letter from the Superintendent Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members, I want to make you aware of our first Parent University for the 2018-2019 school year. It will be on November 1st from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at WPS. The focus of the Parent University will be on Social Emotional Learning with an emphasis on Responsive Classroom. This past summer, the Principals, Social Workers, Special Needs Coordinator, Assistant Superintendent and myself attended a weeklong training on Responsive Classroom. At the beginning of the year, all staff members were trained on components of Responsive Classroom. Responsive Classroom is a way of teaching that creates a safe, challenging, and positive classroom and school wide climate for all students. Students learn academics most efficiently when they have strong social skills that let them take a decisive role in classroom life. Some of the skills they will work on this year are cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, self-control, and empathy. Teachers weave these social skills into everything the students do - academics, recess, lunch, and even entering and leaving the school building and classroom. In grades K-5, teachers will be leading the students through a morning meeting. These meetings set a positive tone and build a sense of community and belonging while giving students practice in critical academic and social skills. In grades 6-8, teachers adapt the strategies to match the needs of the students. Implementation of Responsive Classroom this year has had a positive impact on school climate. Please try to make every effort to join us on November 1st. A separate email with registration information will be sent soon. Finally, I think it is essential to always keep you up to date about relevant information about our District. Please make sure to visit our website (www. sd925.org) throughout the month as we update information frequently. Also, our Principals send weekly emails and have school-specific sites that provide you with pertinent information. Finally, if for any reason you would like to contact me, please email me at psalemi@sd925.org or call me on my cell phone at 708-670-1927. Thank you and have a great month! Sincerely, Philip Salemi

Westchester Primary School Grandparents Day Staff and students at Westchester Primary School welcomed grandparents and grand friends the morning of Friday, September 7 in order to celebrate the importance of relationships across generations. A crowd of grandparents packed the halls of Westchester Primary School and made their way into classrooms and the gymnasium and cafeteria to take part in various activities with their grandchildren. Thank you to all who attended! Dads and Donuts On Thursday, October 11th from 8:00--8:30 am WPS hosted their “Dads & Donuts.” On this date, students came to school with their father or uncle or grandfather etc. for a time of having their student take them on a “learning tour” of school, visiting all of the places where they learn (library, classroom, gym, tech lab etc.). Then everyone will meet in our cafeteria for a time to eat donuts and drink juice. We will be sharing how important males are in the lives of our students and ways to stay connected with what goes on at school.

Walk-A-Thon Westchester Primary School is so excited to announce that their 7th Annual WPS/WIS Walk-a-thon was on Friday, September 28. It was a great way to raise funds for WPTC and our schools while getting the students outside and moving. This event serves as our WPTC fall fundraiser and the funds are used to sponsor all the amazing year end events happening at the schools (field days, 2nd/5th/8th grade celebrations, teacher/staff appreciation luncheons, etc.)

On top of all those things our students are hard at work with math and it is impressive to see how they have already grown in the use of their math vocabulary and the new strategies they are learning. They are busy working to build their reading skills and using our Chromebooks almost daily to hone their 21st technology skills. We continue to be proud of them. Go Huskies!

October was a busy month here at WIS. Officer Verber and Mrs. Shorrock, our school Social Worker, provided an excellent presentation on the dangers of bullying over the course of 2 days. We staged an anti-bullying March to the Westchester Library where we presented them with a banner with our promise to work towards ending bullying. We had our Math/Literacy Night on October 9th, which was attended by more than 50 families. We had a great time learning about math and playing some reading games. The WPTC hosted Dads and Donuts on October 2nd which was attended by over 120 fathers, uncles, and grandfathers. The Book Fair was awesome for our students and teachers. The Fall Family Dance and Fall Classroom Parties were also lots of fun for our students and families. We continue to be thankful for how much support we receive from our parent organization. November is going to be just as busy with activities and events. Our first popcorn day of the year is November 7th. We will celebrate our Veterans on November 9th with an assembly at 9:30. Our Visitation Day is November 14th from 9:30 - 11:00 and 1:20 - 2:30. Then we have Parent/Teacher Conferences on November 19th and 20th. Make a Difference Day Our 8th grade students participated in Make a Difference Day on October 29th with a trip to Feed Our Starving Children in Aurora. Students assisted in packing food that will be delivered to malnourished children across the world. Camp Timber-Lee Educational Tour In mid-October, WMS 6th graders had the opportunity to participate in an outdoor educational tour to Camp Timber-lee in East Troy, Wisconsin. Students experienced the great outdoors through stargazing, hiking, canoeing, zip-lining, and horseback riding. They also challenged themselves and cooperated with each other through team building activities. This was a wonderful opportunity for our 6th grade students. Students who were not able to go on the tour will be participating in Camp WMS. Students will visit Hidden Oaks Nature Center and Little Red Schoolhouse where they will be lead through an animal encounter, archery, and nature art. They will also canoe, hike, and visit the nature center. Springfield Educational Tour The Social Studies Department is pleased to share a great learning experience for our American History students. On Friday, October 12th, the 7th grade students took an all-day field trip to Springfield, Illinois, where they visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, Lincoln’s Tomb, and the Illinois Capitol Building among other places. Watch D.O.G.S. This year at WMS we are continuing our Watch D.O.G.S. initiative. Watch D.O.G.S. is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life. Our goal is to have fathers and fatherfigures spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears around the building. Fathers and father-figures are invited to spend the day with us and work with students in the classrooms and throughout our building. Please contact Mr. Novy at rnovy@sd925.org if you are interested in volunteering for a day. High School Night On September 24th, Westchester Middle School invited approximately twelve area high schools to meet with our Westchester families and answer questions to help with decision-making and planning for high school. Parents received timely information on high school entrance exam dates, open houses, and much more. If you have any questions regarding the high school process, please contact the individual high school or our main office. 8th Grade Fundraiser Our 8th graders will be going on their annual Washington, D.C. Educational Tour in May. To assist in lowering the cost of the tour, students participated in a fundraiser. Students sold cookie dough, candy and magazines to family members, friends and neighbors. If you purchased an item, students will deliver products the last week of October. 7:30 Mass - Church Joyfully Crafting LLC 10708 W 31st Street 708-466-5233 2:00pm-4:00pm – Mosaic – Ornament - $ 45.00 Tuesday, November 20 Divine Infant Church, 1600 Newcastle, 708865-8071 8:00 am Mass Divine Providence-dprov.org 2550 Mayfair Ave PT Conferences-11:30am dismiss 7:30 Mass - Church 7:00p FSA Mtg. - Mayfair Room Joyfully Crafting LLC 10708 W 31st Street 708-466-5233

Thanksgiving Wishes

NOVEMBER 2018

As our nation’s Holiday of Thanksgiving approaches later this month there are many ways this day is celebrated. Either by traveling, vacationing, and coming together with friends, families and neighbors. Planning and cooking elaborate dinners for large groups. Preparing to get a jump on holiday shopping. Watching or playing in annual Turkey Bowl Football Games. Engaging in volunteer service to others. All these experiences bring lasting and fond memories. To all the Residents and their families our Village, the Village President Paul Gattuso and the members of the Board of Trustees, as well as the entire Village staff want to wish all a wonderful, safe and a Happy Thanksgiving.

• 3/4 cup chopped pecans Directions Special equipment: a 2-quart baking dish For the filling: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and butter a 2-quart baking dish. Whisk together the butter, mashed sweet potatoes, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, salt and the eggs in a large bowl. Transfer to the prepared baking dish.
