BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC The Westchester Park District’s Back to School Picnic was a huge success thanks to all of the sponsors, vendors, participants and volunteers. Families were able to fill their bellies with hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream, sandwich samples, fruit and more while walking the grounds. Face painting, balloon animals, picnic games, magic show, interactive vendor booths, getting excited about science show, touch a truck, and so much more entertained the crowd for three hours on a breezy Sunday, September 9th. Families were able to participate in IL CHIP, a comprehensive program offered by the local Masons lodge of Western Springs, where everything is put together for parents in the event that there was a need to help authorities find their lost child. Local Superintendent, Principle, Police Officer and park district Recreation Supervisor volunteered their time under the reverse dunk tank, bringing much laughter and smiles from both children and adults alike. Each September the park district celebrates the beginning of another school year with friends, family and community and hopes to continue the tradition for years to come.

A Message from the Police Chief – Steven Stelter Well, we unfortunately have to say goodbye to summer and welcome in the fall. Every year summer goes by faster and faster. For me, it is a depressing time because summer can never be long enough. Now, we get to enjoy the beautiful fall colors, some of you will probably go apple and/or pumpkin picking, we get to enjoy all the spice ciders and Pumpkin coffees and our beloved Bears are back on the gridiron. The month of October also brings Halloween and all the fun things that go along with that day. As we move through this month, may all the residents of Westchester enjoy the festivities and please be safe. Halloween Safety Tips Halloween is a time of fun, frights, sugar overloading but there is also a concern when it comes to the safety of the children. Please allow me to provide you with some simple safety tips to ensure your family’s Halloween is a safe and spooktacular time. Recommended Hours for Trick or Treat this year will be 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm 1. Is your child’s costume safe? a. Make sure they can see easily and clearly. Consider applying non-toxic make up instead of a mask which can also hinder the sight. b. Their costume should fit well, do not have loose, long or hanging pieces which could cause a trip and fall. c. Costumes should have reflective or glow in the dark areas. Make sure your child has a flashlight if they will be out while it is dark. 2. Watch out for traffic. Children are most likely to be struck by vehicles on Halloween more than any other day. 3. Use the buddy system to avoid being left behind or mixed into other groups. Exchange phone numbers with the parents of other children in your group. Parents, walk with your child as they go house to house. 4. Trick or Treat in well lit neighborhoods and at homes you know, such as trusted neighbors and relatives. 5. Take a picture of your child in costume before they head out the door. It will be a priceless keepsake and can help the police if the child goes missing. During this month of October, two members of the Police Department will be celebrating work anniversaries. The employees are: October 4th – Sgt. Jackie Rogers 19 years October 10th – Officer Brian Lamphere 13 years
