Arc of Westchester
Dear Friends & Fellow Parents Welcome to A Matter of Taste, Arc of Westchester’s signature fundraising event to support innovative, comprehensive, and lifelong services for thousands of individuals and families impacted by autism and other developmental disabilities. We hope you will eat, drink and enjoy yourselves, knowing that your support makes a direct impact on the lives of so many. It is with great pleasure that we honor the Landegger Family, loyal supporters who are devoted to making a meaningful difference in the future of this organization. We also pay special tribute to the remarkable tenure of Ric Swierat, Executive Director of Arc of Westchester, and the extraordinary impact of his visionary leadership. Tonight’s program will take you on a transformative journey illustrating the massive changes in how people with developmental disabilities have been viewed and supported over the 35 years Ric Swierat has been at the helm. Prepare to have your mind boggled as you see what a bright future has been created from such a dark past. Take pride in being part of this movement — because, in truth, we cannot sustain this work without your generous support. With deepest gratitude,
Elaine Masket President, Arc of Westchester Foundation

Welcome On behalf of the Arc of Westchester Foundation and the event committee, I want to welcome you to A Matter of Taste. We are delighted to be back at the beautiful Glen Island Harbour Club. Thank you for coming tonight and for bringing your friends and family. When you purchase sponsorships, tickets, fabulous silent auction items, and support our paddle raise, you become a member of the Arc of Westchester family and enable it to stay innovative, caring, and professional in providing supports and programs for 2,000 people with autism and other developmental disabilities. Congratulations to the Landegger Family, who will be receiving the Family Partner Award, and to Ric Swierat, Executive Director of Arc of Westchester, who will be receiving the Legacy Award. A special thank you and welcome back to our returning chefs and beverage providers, including some who have been with us since the start, and a warm welcome to those who are new to the event this year. We are so grateful to them for volunteering their time, providing their food and drink free of charge, and sharing their love for what they do. As members of the hospitality industry, we know the importance of community connection, and because of that, are aligned with the Arc of Westchester, which focuses so much of its efforts on creating meaningful, community-based lives for people with developmental disabilities. Our chefs and beverage providers are doing their utmost to create a memorable evening for you. Please offer your thanks, share your experience on social media, and remember to visit their establishments. Enjoy your evening reminiscing with old friends, making memories with new ones, congratulating our honorees and knowing that your dedication and support tonight, as well as throughout the year, have a tremendous impact on the communities in which you live. Thank you and bon appĂŠtit!

Arc of Westchester
Greetings Thank you for joining us at the 14th annual A Matter of Taste. This is our second year at the Glen Island Harbour Club. Surrounded by spectacular views of the Long Island Sound as the backdrop for this evening’s event, we hope that you will help us make this year’s A Matter of Taste another record-breaking success. Each year, this very important fundraising event brings together more than 400 members of the Arc of Westchester family to raise funds for critically needed programs and services for more than 2,000 people of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Thanks to your steadfast support, A Matter of Taste has raised close to $2 million over the past 13 years. We are thankful for your generosity, which aids in doing what is right for our children, adults and families. Tonight we honor the Landegger family with the Family Partner Award. They have first-hand experience in raising a child with special needs and understand the great rewards and the significant challenges families such as theirs face. Their strong support of the Arc of Westchester is testimony to the depth of this family’s desire to help Arc of Westchester continue to do all that it can to enable individuals and families to live the lives they dream of. We also honor Ric Swierat with the Legacy Award. Ric has been Arc of Westchester’s Executive Director for 35 years. He is a fearless leader, humble and incredibly optimistic, and never one to turn away from a challenge. Both of our honorees exemplify love in its purest of form. Arc of Westchester continues to step into new realms and try new things. To know that we always strive to stay one step ahead inspires me, and I hope it inspires you to be as generous as possible so that the people we have the privilege of supporting can enjoy fulfilled lives and a bright future. Many thanks,
Rosa Rodriguez President, Arc of Westchester

The Landegger Family FA M I LY PA R T N E R A W A R D
While the Landegger Family history of charitable giving was established a long time ago, the birth of Ian Landegger, 13 years ago, brought into focus the needs of people impacted by developmental disabilities. Ian’s parents, George and Laura Landegger, Jr., have first-hand experience raising a child with special needs, making them keenly aware of the rewards and challenges families like theirs, and individuals like Ian, face every day. “Arc of Westchester is an extraordinary organization founded by families, for families, for life. As my wife Laura and I discover more about the innovative and excellent programs and services provided by the Arc of Westchester and hear the success stories shared by members of the Arc of Westchester family, we acquire the knowledge and support needed to greet each day with hope and optimism for our son Ian’s successful future,” said George. Families like the Landeggers are the backbone of Arc of Westchester, giving generously of their time and financial support. For example, Laura has been an invaluable member of the A Matter of Taste event committee over the years, and she and George have encouraged many friends and family members to get involved. In addition, Laura’s creative eye played an integral role in selecting pieces for the first Arc of Westchester Gallery 265 permanent collection. This unique grouping of art is being exhibited in businesses and other Westchester County community spaces to raise awareness for Arc of Westchester and showcase the many talents of our artists. It is with great pleasure and honor we present The Landegger Family with this year’s Family Partner Award.

Ric Swierat LEGACY AWARD
“There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?” Robert F. Kennedy During his 35 years as Executive Director of Arc of Westchester, Ric Swierat has become a guiding light of the Arc Movement. Ric’s tenure began during a time when people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (“I/DD”) were coming out of institutions, where they had been treated as objects or worse. He has spent his entire career correcting that injustice, focusing on promise and potential so that people with I/DD would be able to function and flourish in their communities. An inspiring leader of a staff of more than 800, Ric has pulled, pushed and prodded government officials, boards of directors, the business community, staff members, and even parents to achieve this vision of inclusion, individual choice, independence and productivity. Crystalizing the desires of the families who form the core of the Arc mission, Ric has kept Arc of Westchester in the vanguard with extraordinary successes, such as moving preschoolers from self-contained classes to inclusionary settings, and closing sheltered workshops in favor of community-based, paid employment. Ric is defined by his optimism and an extraordinary energy level. A believer in continuous learning and the importance of shared knowledge, he is a member of the Board of Directors at the Business Council of Westchester, sits on a number of state and national boards related to the field of developmental disabilities, and is an adjunct professor at Western Connecticut State University’s Ancell School of Business. It is with full hearts and great pride that we present Ric Swierat with the Legacy Award.

Dear Friends, Welcome to the 14th annual A Matter of Taste. It is our sincere hope that you are enjoying this lively and meaningful event. Arc of Westchester is unparalleled in its commitment to provide life-long comprehensive services and innovative programs for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities through the entire arc of their lives. Despite ever-increasing challenges, the Arc of Westchester is determined to create a bright future for the thousands of individuals who depend on it every day. The $6 million Arc of a Life campaign was designed to address a seismic shift in funding resources, an exploding population, and changed paradigms for providing these services. As Co-Chairs of this important campaign, we are pleased to report that contributions and pledges of over $4,300,000 have already allowed us to begin new program initiatives, improve our residences and direct support where it is most needed. The final stretch of the Arc of a Life campaign will take place over the next 6-8 months, focusing on a number of significant initiatives that Arc of Westchester’s Executive Director, Ric Swierat, would like to see accomplished prior to his retirement in June 2018. For example, the creation of the Senior Connection North at the Ann Manzi Center in Mount Kisco for seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Senior Connection North will provide cutting-edge program and social opportunities in a supportive and aesthetically pleasing environment, and offer a holistic approach to aging gracefully with dignity. As we approach the campaign finish line, we hope that we can count on your continuing generosity to help us reach our $6 million goal and, at the same time, to honor Ric for his 35 years of visionary leadership and to keep our life-long promise to support the individuals and families we serve, throughout the arc of their lives. Warmest regards,
William V. Healey, Co-Chair Laura Saggese, Co-Chair Arc of a Life Campaign Arc of a Life Campaign 8

THE MATTHEWS, FROM BEACON NY; CHRISTINE, MARK AND THEIR SONS MARK JR., TIMOTHY AND CASEY CASEY, AGE 14, HAS AUTISM.
IT
TAKES
BRAINS TO SOLVE AUTISM The Matthews family never saw themselves as a “super” family, yet when they bonded together to support their son Casey, they were indeed super. And now the Matthews and families like them all over New York and around the world are being looked upon as superheroes. Why?
They have all been united by one brave and heroic act … pledging to donate the brain tissue of their sons and daughters when they are sadly no longer with us. It’s difficult to think about, but the reality is that brain tissue is urgently needed for the scientific research that will help thousands of people with autism. Join forces with the Matthews family and other superhero families to help ensure a brighter future for all. Because it takes brains to solve autism. Visit TakesBrains.org to learn more and see how your entire family can help build a better tomorrow. Or contact the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York: 844-212-HOPE (4673).
