Palisades Fire survivor finds refuge in Westchester

Westchester resident Courtney Paulson and her mother Sue Kohl are known in the local real estate market as the Kohl Team and have been helping people find the perfect Westside home for the last three decades. On January 7, a wildfire engulfed the Pacific Palisades destroying thousands of businesses and residences, including the one Sue had lived in for over 30 years, and one that Courtney calls her second home.
The Palisades is a special community for Courtney and Sue, not only because it is the center of their thriving business, but because it’s where Sue raised Courtney and her four siblings. Both formed long lasting memories and relationships there. Sadly, the area has been devastated.
“Our entire neighborhood went. There’s a random single house here and there but it looks like an atomic bomb just hit and wiped out the whole place,” says Sue, who is also the President of the Pacific Palisades Community Council.
Though shaken by the events, Courtney steadfastly shares her experience of how the tragic events started. The night before, a red flag warning had been issued, signaling high winds. She had planned an early morning hike with a friend but, after waking up to strong gusts, decided it wasn’t safe to go outside.
Instead, she went about her usual Tuesday routine, attending her 9:30 a.m. office meeting at the Berkshire Hathaway office on Alma Real Dr. in Pacific Palisades. Around 10:20 a.m., she heard sirens. Moments later, she received a text from her friend she had planned to hike with. It said, “Fire.”
“I got chills,” Courtney says. “I asked her, ‘Where?’ and she sent me a photo of the smoke.”
At first, the fire seemed far away, in the Highlands neighborhood, a hillside area where previous fires have started. Often, when there’s a fire, it starts up in the Highlands, says Sue, adding, “For whatever reason, whether it’s an unhoused person lighting a fire in the canyons or something else, that’s always the spot. But our fire stations in the Palisades—Stations 69 and 23— usually jump on it right away, and it’s out before it spreads.”
But this time was different.
As Courtney walked to Starbucks on the corner of Swarthmore and Sunset, she turned the corner and saw not just smoke, but flames on the hillside. Panic struck her.
“That’s not the Highlands, that’s Temescal, where I go hiking,” Courtney says.
Realizing how close the fire was to their neighborhood, Courtney immediately called her friend in the Highlands.
“Get in your car. Get your daughter, her friend, the cats–just leave,” Courtney recalls saying. “Come to our house in the Alphabet Streets. You’ll be safe here.”

Check out these things we love
IN WESTCHESTER/PLAYA
Shopping local for Valentine Day gifts
Whether you’re shopping for a loved one, a Galentine’s event, or doing some self care this month, consider shopping local when it comes to your gift-giving needs!
If you’re short on time, hit up the Westchester Triangle, and head to The Book Jewel to check out their display of featured titles, assortment of Jellycat plushies and handmade items like jewelry, cards and candles. Then head to Triangle Wines to pick up a bottle of your favorite varietal (we’re partial to the Bosco del Merlo Pinot Grigio). And if you’re in the mood for something sweet, we highly recommend Westchester Bakery’s Florentines and frosted brownies.
And of course, no Triangle shopping experience is complete without a stop at neighborhood institution Soundsations Records, to pick up a new (or old) favorite on vinyl.

Coffee meet-ups at Tomat
There’s no better way to start the morning than with a deliciously brewed cup of coffee or an espresso with a flaky buttery pastry, and since opening in October, Tomat has been our go-to spot for breakfast on the go! But it’s also quickly become one of our favorite spots for coffee meetups due to their friendly service, airy atmosphere, and their pistachio croissants! They’re so good you’ll want all your neighborhood friends to try them!
Visit this month for other stand-out treats like the seasonal strawberry fruit Danish.

Ordering the lunch special at Ayara
There’s never a bad time to order a meal at Ayara Thai, but you can’t beat stopping by for your mid-day meal and getting the lunch special! A readervoted Best Of lunch spot, Ayara offers a $20 special that includes an appetizer, entree and a drink. We love the spicy papaya salad and veggie rolls (with the best sweet and sour sauce in town), and we wish they’d keep the veggiepacked farmers’ red curry on the menu all day long!
Stop by this month to try their February specials, including a scallop pad prik pao, the “In the Mood for Love” cocktail featuring a Calpico-yuzu foam and a limited edition passion fruit s’mores dessert!
Follow them on Instagram @ayarathai for fun food content and specials!
Attending events at LMU
Having a top-ranked university in town definitely has its perks, including the long list of events, speaker series and cultural experiences that happen every month.
Events that are open to the public this month include a talk by Gregory Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries, who is receiving an award on February 10, and an exhibit “Ghosts of Segregation: Photographs by Rich Frishman” at the Laband Art Gallery through March 29. We’re a strong believer in the power of community, and there’s nothing we like covering more than when individuals and community groups come together for a good cause! We’re grateful that Westchester/Playa has so many people, businesses, and organizations that take to heart giving back and doing good in their neighborhood, from social clubs and Facebook groups to grassroots clean up crews and event organizers!
A few of our favorite examples of groups building community include the Westchester Team Challenge (back this year in August), Clean Up Westchester, local Rotary Clubs, the Westchester Family YMCA, Woman’s Club of Playa del Rey and the LAX Coastal Chamber!

Take a trip around town and take a moment to enjoy the plethora of public art and murals that have transformed blank walls into vibrant canvases. We love the sentiment behind the mural at the 7-Eleven on Sepulveda; how you can see the “Welcome to Westchester” mural when you land at LAX, happy to be home; and how Playa del Rey landmarks are memorialized in paint on the real estate office on Culver Blvd.
As major events head to L.A., including the 2028 Olympics, we hope we see more public art brighten and beautify the area for residents and visitors alike!

As the Palisades and Eaton fires quickly grew and reports of burned homes and evacuations began, the Westchester Family YMCA wasted no time springing into action.
In less than 24 hours, the Y mobilized to become a donation site, and then a distribution center, for anyone impacted by the devastating fires to pick up supplies, clothing, toiletries, food, clothing and more.
With many evacuees heading to the Westchester area due to the large number of hotels along Century Blvd., the Y’s Annex, located off of Alverstone Ave., became not only the community’s main hub for donations, but also a beacon of kindness for people reeling from having to leave their homes with little to nothing.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/250210233319-5bb8c1ba18e4e8d72faf9a15e4888878/v1/e4e44c8ddba68561f687d714ca74b30d.jpeg)
Wanting to support those impacted by the fires, the Stephanie Younger Group (SYG), in partnership with the Moms of Westchester and Playa del Rey Facebook Group, turned their office into a distribution center on January 8.
Thanks to the generosity of community members and agents, the group was able to collect more than 100 large moving boxes of clothing and essential items. These items were able to be delivered directly to families, before SYG expanded their efforts to support a popup shop at St. Monica Prep, as well as organizations like the Westchester Family YMCA, the National Charity League of the Palisades, and other distribution centers helping people citywide.

Donations came from all over the community from local residents who filled up their cars with baby items, toiletries and water, to businesses that activated their teams and dropped off essential items. They even received U-Hauls full of donations from Southern California Boy and Girl Scout troops from as far away as San Diego and Laguna Beach.
Soon the Annex’s lot would become an organized “shopping” experience for displaced Angelenos, who could go from table to table and pick up any of the thousands of new (or gently used, when it came to clothes) items.
Elvy Crane, a local resident, contacted the Y because both of her sisters lost their homes, one in Altadena and one in the Palisades. Within an hour, volunteers were driving donations out to them.

Since launching its emergency relief efforts, the Marina del Rey Rotary Club has been able to deliver more than 80,000 pounds of water, 1,500plus hot meals, and 250 pallets full of clothing and supplies to relief centers across L.A. County, thanks to the help of more than 200 volunteers and numerous businesses who stepped up to lend a hand.
After first opening up a donation center with the support of the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club, the club is now operating the “Heart of the Harbor” fire relief center in Fisherman’s Village (13723 Fiji Way, MdR). Open daily from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of February, the space is filled with new and free items, including toiletries, pet supplies, clothing and more. Learn how you can help and get involved at mdrrotary.org.

“Our family was so thankful for how quickly and generously the Y and its volunteers helped us. It just shows, in the middle of sadness, the Y provided hope,” said Elvy.
When it came to volunteers, there was no shortage of people who wanted to help! More than 2,500 volunteers donated their time to service and continue to do so. Longtime volunteer and Youth Advisor, Sean Perry, mobilized the volunteers each day with the help of Y Program Director, Jimi-Lee Tomboc. Volunteers such as Marianne Salas, Gregg Goldfarb, Maya Donato, Laura Davis, Ahmanise Sanati, John Sharpe and Joey Long spent hours each day helping those in need. Groups of corporate employees from Delta Airlines generously volunteered multiple days, alongside Assemblymember Tina McKinnor’s office staff, Hayley Hutt and Will Mitchell, who mobilized donations as well.
After a whirlwind 10 days of the Annex serving as a distribution center, the Y was able to serve more than 1,500 individuals, including 500-plus direct deliveries to those in need. With the help of longtime Y supporter, Drollinger Properties, the Y transitioned their efforts to a new location in Westchester on January 24. The YMCA Community Cares Center is open through February 22
for anyone impacted by the fires to visit and pick up an array of donated items. The center is located at 8907
S. Sepulveda Blvd. in Westchester, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Follow the Y’s Instagram @westchesterymca to learn about donation needs and volunteer opportunities!
“This has truly been the most rewarding public service effort I’ve ever been involved with and it renewed my faith in humanity,” said YMCA Board Chair John Sharpe. “I’d like to give a special shout out to Athens Services, who provided multiple roll-off dumpsters and recycle bins; Ridwell, for taking all of the plastic that we pulled from the trash; Trashie, who has committed to taking our textile waste for recycling; Smoke & Mirrors, who provided us with the walkie-talkies that were absolutely essential, and of course Drollinger Properties, who is allowing us retail space for our pop-up distribution store...the list of gratitude is too long!”
A huge thank you to all the donors and volunteers who contributed to the fire relief efforts across the community, including at the Y! A special shout out also goes to those who went above and beyond to lend support during this unprecedented time for L.A.

Finding refuge in Westchester (continued)
(continued from page 4)
The Alphabet Streets have always been considered one of the safest areas in the Palisades. Located in the center of town, the streets are flat and have minimal brush.
“It’s been evacuated before,” Courtney says. “But my mom’s neighborhood has always been the place where people evacuate to–not from.”
Something in her gut told Courtney to leave. She ran back to the office, shaking, and told Sue, “We need to go now.”
They canceled their appointments, rushed to Sue’s home and started packing the car. Courtney grabbed personal belongings, while Sue focused on photo albums and her dogs.
During this time, Courtney was still trying to reach her friend, who was supposed to be driving down Palisades Drive. But every call went straight to voicemail.
“I knew she was stuck,” says Courtney.
The local TV news has shown the haunting footage of all the cars stranded on Palisades Drive as bulldozers tried to clear a path for firefighters. The images are chilling.
“That’s where my friend was and there’s no cell service on that road. So, I just had to wait,” said Courtney.
Desperate to get out, Courtney sent a final message: “We have to leave. When you get to the bottom, meet us in Westchester.”
Safety in Westchester
They drove straight to Courtney’s stepbrother’s home in Kentwood.
“He was out of town. We just got the gate code and moved in,” Courtney says.
Hours later, her friend and her daughter finally made it out–one of the last cars to escape before the fire overtook the road.
“People behind her had to abandon their cars because the flames were catching onto them,” Courtney says.
For the next five days, they all stayed together in Westchester, glued to their phones, exchanging texts with neighbors, and watching the news. For two days, Courtney hoped her mother’s home might be spared.
That hope was shattered when Courtney’s father, who lived a block away from Sue, sent a photo of Sue’s
burned-out house. It was a gut punch.
“The fire took a house a minute, there was nothing anyone could do,” says Sue, explaining that despite the courageous efforts of firefighters, they were largely helpless against the Palisades Fire due to a combination of intense winds and dry conditions that fueled its spread. Firefighters also faced a severe water shortage because the reservoir at the top of the Highlands has been sitting empty for at least a year due to delayed repairs.
“They were supposed to put a cover on it, like a pool cover,” Sue says in frustration. “There was no excuse for it to be empty.”
For Courtney, one of the most surreal aspects of this tragedy has been reconnecting with childhood friends, only now, under devastating circumstances. She describes sitting at a table with five of her closest friends from childhood, realizing that every single one of them had lost their homes in the fire.
“It’s such a unique situation. There’s an unspoken understanding between us,” says Courtney. “We don’t even have to explain how we’re feeling, we just know.”
Luckily for Courtney these friendships have become a source of strength.
“There’s something powerful about going through this together, it reminds us that we’re not alone, and that our community will rise again,” says Courtney.
Westchester steps up
Both Sue and Courtney admit feeling overwhelmed. Generations of family memories like photos, children’s artwork and heirlooms were gone in an instant. But they felt so grateful to find shelter in Westchester, where Sue is now leasing a home, thanks to a friend of Courtney’s. Once they heard the news, they quickly reached out to Courtney to offer her the family’s rental home that just happened to be vacant.
Within hours after the fire, the Westchester community stepped up in big ways to help–not just Sue and Courtney–but all those displaced by the disaster.
“The kindness we’ve been shown has been incredible,” Courtney says. “From the YMCA setting up donation centers to Rotary Club members making sure families had what they needed–the sup-
port has been overwhelming.”
The Westchester YMCA quickly became a hub for relief efforts, setting up a spot where fire victims could pick up clothes, food, and essential items. Community members flooded in with donations, and when the initial twoweek effort ended, organizers found another space to continue their work.
The outpouring of support, the people who have stepped up, it’s shown us the very best in humanity. And that’s what gives us hope. “
“People should know this is still happening,” Courtney says. “There are still resources available, and the generosity of this community hasn’t stopped.”
Adds Sue, “They didn’t miss a minute. The response has been incredible.”
Finding Hope in Rebuilding
Despite the immense loss, both women are optimistic about the future.
“The vast majority of us will rebuild. The Palisades is a special place, and the sense of community is too strong for this to tear us apart,” says Sue.
Neighbors are already making plans to return. Local contractor Chuck Hart, a
childhood friend of Courtney’s, immediately mobilized his construction company, Hart Built, to start clearing debris and removing downed trees. His GoFundMe campaign has raised over $200,000 to support recovery efforts.
“Seeing people step up like this, using their resources and skills to help however they can, it’s proof that our community never left,” Courtney says. “We’re still here, and we’re rebuilding.”
A New Chapter
For now, Sue is settling into her temporary home in Westchester, just around the corner from Courtney’s house. She’s already met her neighbors and is finding comfort in this community.
“We’re incredibly lucky,” says Courtney, “Many families have had to move far away, but we get to be close to each other. My kids can walk over to my mom’s after school. That means everything.”
As they unpack donations and slowly replace the everyday items lost in the fire, Sue and Courtney remain grateful.
“This has been the worst experience of our lives,” Sue admits. “But the outpouring of support, the people who have stepped up, it’s shown us the very best in humanity. And that’s what gives us hope.”
As the Palisades community rises from the ashes, it’s clear they are not alone. Thanks to the kindness of neighbors in Westchester and other communities across Los Angeles, they are finding strength.

Medicare myths exposed: what you need to know
By Karla Garcia
Opinion: Navigating the world of Medicare can be confusing and full of misconceptions. Whether you are turning 65 soon or already enrolled, it’s important to understand fact from fiction. Let’s go over the top 10 Medicare myths I hear most often, and empower you with the knowledge you need for a smooth Medicare journey!
Myth #1: Medicare is free. Despite what you may have heard, Medicare is not free.
While Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) is typically premiumfree for most people who have paid Medicare taxes during their working years, most beneficiaries pay a premium for Part B (medical insurance).
Myth #2: You must enroll in Medicare when you turn 65. It’s not mandatory to enroll in Medicare when you turn 65.
For example, if you already have health insurance through an employer, you have the option to delay enrollment. It’s a good idea to compare your employer plan to Medicare, as sometimes Medicare can save you some money. Keep in mind that if you delay enrollment and don’t have creditable coverage, you may face penalties or gaps in coverage.
Myth #3: Medicare covers all healthcare costs.
Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) doesn’t include routine vision, dental, hearing care, and prescription drug coverage.

In addition to running her own insurance firm, Karla enjoys volunteering and is a member of the Fourth of July Parade committee.
Myth #4: Medicare Advantage plans are the same as Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies and may include additional benefits like dental and vision, but they have different provider networks, out-of-pocket costs, and rules compared to Original Medicare.
Myth #5: You’re automatically enrolled in Medicare when you turn 65. Many people believe that they’ll automatically be enrolled in Medicare when they turn 65, but that’s not always the case. Automatic enrollment

occurs if you’re already receiving Social Security benefits prior to turning 65. If you’re not, you’ll need to sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after. Missing this enrollment window could lead to late penalties.
Myth #6: Medicare covers LongTerm Care. Medicare will cover a shortterm stay in a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation after an illness or injury. It doesn’t cover the cost of long-term care, such as a nursing home or in-home care for chronic conditions. It’s important to look into additional insurance options to protect yourself financially.
Myth #7: Everyone pays the same amount for Medicare.
Medicare costs vary depending on factors such as income, the specific Medicare parts you enroll in, and whether you qualify for any financial assistance programs.
Myth #8: Doctors don’t take Medicare.
Most doctors participate in the Medicare program and accept patients. It’s recommended that you always check with your specific healthcare provider to ensure they accept Medicare assignment.
Myth #9: Medicare is only for people aged 65 and older.
While most beneficiaries are 65 or older, Medicare also covers individuals under 65 with qualifying disabilities or specific conditions like End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS.
Myth #10: Medicare Part D covers all prescription drugs.
Part D plans have formularies (lists of covered drugs) that vary by plan. Some medications may require prior authorization or not be covered at all.
In conclusion, it is essential to have a clear understanding of the facts and myths surrounding Medicare. Understanding the facts can save you from costly mistakes and ensure you get the coverage you need. If you have questions or need more information about Medicare eligibility, coverage options, or costs, feel free to reach out!

Random Notes/Opinion
Three strength training myths for women
By Jeff Blair
Opinion: For years, many saw strength-training as only for those that were interested in gaining a lot of muscle, and therefore, primarily for men. Those times are thankfully largely in the past, yet some limiting myths still persist. This month I am going to discuss three common myths I hear about strength-training for women.
“Weight-training makes you big and bulky.” If a woman is concerned about adding too much muscle, I never dismiss that. It is important to respect each individual’s personal goals. However, it is also important to know that it is not easy to add excess muscle. Adding significant muscle typically requires a combination of strong genetics, consistently high protein intake and adequate rest, in addition to frequent and intense strength-training. Most bodybuilders work out with weights four to six times per week to build large muscles. Many are also taking muscle building supplements, and some may even use anabolic substances, which can include steroids.
In 22 years of working with hundreds of strength-training clients, probably 70 percent of who were women, I have found those who can build enough muscle to think, “Wow, that is more
muscle than I wanted” are probably less than five percent. These people often have a strength-training and athletic background and have what is known as strong “muscle memory.” They usually know they can build muscle easier than most and mention that in our first meeting. It is rare, but not impossible. I do not claim these numbers to be a scientific fact, but just my observation.
“Light weights are best for women.” There is a bit of a nuance here as women can see results with light weights assuming they put in much more time in the gym. However, somewhat heavier weights are usually a more efficient path to fitness goals. Maximizing strength training benefits requires something called “progressive overload.” Progressive overload requires challenging the muscles in a way where the person gets stronger over time. Doing very light bicep curls is not ineffective, just like walking around the block for 10 minutes is not ineffective. All exercise counts, and I believe in that idea. However, it is usually not the fastest or best way to see progress.
“Yoga is much better than strengthtraining.” I frequently hear a variation of “yoga is better than strength-training for women.” I have done yoga and I have found it to be a good addition to strength-training. However, I would

never say it is better than strength training. There are several reasons for this. One, strength-training is more versatile than yoga. Yoga is mostly limited to body weight resistance. In strength-training, we can use body weight resistance, band resistance, machine resistance, kettlebell resistance and more. We can increase strengthtraining resistance in a nearly endless combination of ways. It is much easier to maximize progressive overload with weights than it is with yoga. Secondly, strength-training is better at strengthening certain parts of the body (the back, for example), which are crucial to human health. If you have ever attended physical therapy for a shoulder issue, you know they strengthen your back since back strength often correlates to shoulder health. Third, strengthtraining is superior for increasing bone density and bone health since strengthtraining puts more resistance on the bones than body weight resistance only. More resistance means stronger and healthier bones. Fourth, strength training is better at building muscle since it can put more resistance on the muscles. Maintaining muscle can also help fight weight gain and is crucial to a healthy metabolism. Anecdotally, I can share our studio has had several women begin strength-training after years of

practicing yoga who expressed a clear preference for the results produced by strength-training. If someone has an active yoga practice, I would never suggest anyone stop or curtail that. However, I would encourage all yoga practitioners to consider supplementing their practice with strength-training.

Sepulveda Boulevard was full of community members who came out to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday at the bi-annual Kids’ March for Equality on Monday, January 20.
More than 100 attendees of all ages gathered in front of Kohl’s for the hour long event, which served as a non-partisan celebration of kindness, diversity and equality.
During the festivities, participants held up signs with positive phrases like “Lead with love,” “The future is inclusive,” and “Peace,” before marching from La Tijera to

Manchester Ave. Other signs included quotes from King’s most famous speeches like, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Organizers–Westside Activists–plan to hold the event again in 2027, and hope to schedule a day of service for next year’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The event was supported by local businesses including Westchester Pharmacy, Kumon Westchester, Westchester-Loyola Village and Yogurtland Westchester.
