AYARA THAI CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN WESTCHESTER
By Courtenay Edelhart
Photos by Robert Higgins
More than half of new restaurants fail in their first year, and even successful family-owned eateries sometimes struggle to survive the transition from one generation to the next. Fortunately for Ayara Thai founders Andy and Anna Asapahu, not one but two daughters are committed to not only staying in the family business, but pushing the Westchester beacon of Thai cuisine to even greater heights.

AYARA THAI CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN WESTCHESTER
“The menu reflects the restaurant’s signature blend of traditional Thai flavors and growing up Thai American Angeleno,” Vanda continues. “The anniversary brunch menu reflects the scope of our cuisine, our identity, and teases the potential of what we may offer in the future.”
This month, Ayara Thai is celebrating its two decades of operation with a special 20th anniversary brunch on August 17 and 18. Prix fixe menu highlights include Kanom Jeab ThaiChinese crab, shrimp and chicken dumplings, stewed beef soup, fried chicken with a pandan mochi waffle, and a Kanom Krok coconut pancake blini board including caviar, smoked salmon and corn.
Her father, Andy Asapahu, obtained his culinary acumen from his mother as he was growing up in a Thai-Chinese community in Thailand’s Samsen District along the banks of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River. Her mother, Anna Asapahu, grew up in the northern Thailand city of Lampang, typically cooking with locally sourced produce, some of which was grown at home.

“Celebrating 20 years of running our family-owned and operated restaurant feels incredibly rewarding, yet emotional,” said co-owner and head chef Vanda Asapahu. “It’s a testament to years of hard work, dedication, and the ability to overcome countless challenges. It’s a moment of pride, reflecting on our growth, lessons, and success, and the relationships built with customers, staff, and the community. It’s also humbling,

Vanda soaked up those traditions when she lived and worked in Thailand for four years, eating her way through the streets, countryside, and the dinner tables of relatives for inspiration. Her sister, Cathy Asapahu, studied and worked at MICHELIN-Star restaurants in New York and France before returning to Ayara, where she integrates French and Thai techniques in pastries. Congratulations to our 2024 Best Of & Favorite Honorees! 2024
Dear Readers,
We love our community and enjoy celebrating its people, places and events each month in the pages of the Westchester/Playa Hometown News!
Our Best Of Readers’ Poll is our super-sized way to highlight all the best things about living and working in Westchester, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista and Marina del Rey. With so many excellent restaurants, businesses and organizations in the area, we love giving you—our readers—an annual opportunity to vote for your favorites. You are the real experts, and you’ve been helping us honor these outstanding individuals year after year! Thank you for being a part of recognizing those who make our community a special place to live, work and visit.
Voting took place for our 13th Annual Best Of Poll on June 10 through July 11 and readers voted via a link from SurveyMonkey. Voting was limited to one vote per IP address.
The Hometown News loves supporting our small businesses and shopping local. When we support our local businesses, they are able to support our neighborhood by sponsoring local sports teams, donating to school fundraisers, providing jobs and helping our community thrive. A special thank you to all our local businesses that make it a priority to
give back to their community! The results of our 2024 Best Of Readers’ Poll are located on the following pages. These pages highlight those businesses that go the extra mile for their customers, clients and friends, inspiring the type of loyalty that gets our readers voting every year to make sure their favorites make our list.
Each category contains a “Best Of” honoree and two runner-up “Favorites.” While this poll is a fun way to celebrate the best of our community, it only represents a small portion of all the great things that make up our neighborhood. If you don’t see your top picks on this list, please remember to vote next year!
We hope you’ll consider patronizing our Best Of honorees. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find some new favorites! Make sure to tell them the Hometown News sent you!
Lastly, while we like giving out awards, we’re proud to share that we received one ourselves and are celebrating being named the 2024 Small Business Of the Year by the LAX Coastal Chamber! Thank you to our readers, all the Best Of voters, advertisers and our community for making this publication possible. We couldn’t do this without your support, and we are grateful for every single one of you!

The Westside’s Favorite Real Estate Team
Over 20 years ago, Spencer Kelly proudly began his career as a Financial Advisor here in Westchester, CA. He then co-founded Regatta Capital Group, an independent wealth management firm, that now manages over $1.2 billion for local families and business owners. His minimum client size is $1 million.
I am the owner and designer at Katie’s Kreations Events. This business is very near and dear to my heart, and was born out of the love for my grandmothers and all that they taught me about hosting and planning events. I named my business after my maternal Great Grandmother, Katie Hewitt, who started as a cook and table scape designer in Tampa, Florida. I spent a lot of time with both of my grandmothers in the kitchen and watching how they hosted family and friends. Everyone was always welcome and greeted with a smile.
I wanted to make sure that I brought that same love and joy into my business. This was especially true during Covid. We were all asked to stay home to keep all of the world safe. As I was home and interacting through Facebook with our community, I saw that we all still needed to celebrate. Celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and just life. I started assisting friends with their birthdays by adding balloons for outside celebrations. The word spread that I was offering balloon design services and YOU turned this into a balloon business. Your support, has been what made me decide to offer balloons as an additional service to my clients. Thank you to all my clients in Westchester, Playa Vista, Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey, Culver City, South Bay and beyond!

5 QUESTIONS WITH... ROBIN ZACHA
Marina del Rey resident Cathryn Michon is a best-selling author, standup comic, actress, feature film director, screenwriter, producer, and animal advocate. This month she’s launching a new book, “I’m Still Here: A Dog’s Purpose Forever,” written to comfort anyone who has ever had to say goodbye to a dog (or person) gone too soon.
Michon is no stranger to the heartache of losing a furry best friend, or the belief in the eternal soul connection between people and dogs. Fifteen years ago, as she was grieving over the loss of her beloved dog, Ellie, her husband W. Bruce Cameron created a story to comfort her. The story would open her heart to adopting her next dog, Tucker, a mixed-breed rescue mutt that’s part Terrier, Golden, Beagle and Poodle. To help others navigating the same emotions, Cameron would go on to write “A Dog’s Purpose,” a #1 New York Times bestseller that spent 63 weeks on the list. The film adaptation, written by the couple and starring Dennis Quaid and K.J. Apa, is the most popular live action dog movie of all time.
With this new book, Michon is providing her take on the grieving process, which serves as a graphic
Cathryn Michon
companion book to the original, “A Dog’s Purpose.” The story is written in freeform verse from the angel dog’s perspective, and aims to give the reader consolation, good news and hope.
The book also features watercolor illustrations by award-winning artist Seth Taylor, and a customizable page where people can add a photograph to honor their angel dog to create a memorable keepsake.
“I wanted it to be a book you could give to a friend on the very day they lost their dog, because it would be healing, and it would be a celebration of their angel dog that I believe is still here, even as they are joyfully over the rainbow bridge with all the people and animals we have loved,” said Michon. “It’s the kind of book you can go back to again and again for comfort and inspiration, because the dog has very good advice about living in the moment and treasuring those we love every day.”
We recently connected with Cathryn to learn more about her September 7 book launch at Playa Vista’s PetSpace, and asked her to share her thoughts on being a pet parent, so here is “5 Questions With...Cathryn!”
What do you hope pet owners can gain from reading your new book?
I hope it reminds people that souls bound in love belong to each other forever. The angel dog narrator of my book wants people to know that your dog really hopes that one day you will open your heart to another dog—when you are ready, of course. They can’t imagine you without a dog. They will either come back to you, or they will send a friend. As the dog narrating my book says, “all dog souls are different, but they are all good!”

What are some of your favorite local dog-friendly places to take Tucker? We love going to the shopping area in Playa Vista where there are quite a few outdoor restaurants that welcome dogs, like Sol Mexican Cocina. We also love to go to Mother’s Beach and bring a picnic and sit in that beautiful new pavilion. We love the summer concert series in Burton Chace Park, where dogs are welcome on leash. And of course, it’s just great to go for a long walk in the marina and look at all the beautiful boats.
You and your husband, Bruce, obviously love dogs and are animal advocates. What is your advice or tips for pet parents?
I would say that you should take advantage of some of the amazing resources that the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace has to offer. They offer free dog training, and I have to say, spending the time to train your pet with a professional is one of the best investments of time you can make. It’s so amazing that PetSpace offers that for free. The other thing that I suggest is that no matter what kind of animal you are considering adopting, please work with one of the many amazing rescues in our area. Best Friends, The Amanda Foundation, there are just so many wonderful rescue organizations in our area. Even if you have your heart set on a particular breed, they can work with you.
Can you share about your book launch at Wallis Annenberg PetSpace? Well, this is going to be the best book party in the history of book parties! It’s from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 7. It’s to celebrate my book, “I’m Still Here: A Dog’s Purpose Forever,” and to celebrate my husband’s new working dog book for kids called, “Ripley: Fire Station Five,” about a fire station dog. The party is free and open to the public. We’ll have festive food and beverages, and we’ll be doing a live performance. There will also be amazing adoptable animals, and we’re even going to have an engine company of firefighters! You can bring your own dog on a leash if they’re friendly around other dogs and people. The Wallis Annenberg PetSpace is a gorgeous and inspiring space completely devoted to celebrating the human animal bond. We’ll, of course, be signing collectible first editions of both books, because legendary independent bookseller Diesel Brentwood will be on site.
Is there any local business or organization you’d like to give a shout-out to?
If you’re ever doing takeout with your dog, our absolute favorite is to get food from Charcoal Venice. Tucker loves it, too, because they are a very meatoriented restaurant and meat is his favorite! Get it to go and then go over to the picnic tables at Mother’s Beach and enjoy a magnificent sunset.
The event will feature refreshments, readings and maybe even an appearance by cast and filmmakers

DRALL celebrates anniversary season with triple crown titles. Del Rey American Little League (DRALL) recently completed their 70th anniversary of Little League Baseball in Westchester and Playa del Rey with a season for the books!
DRALL swept the District-37 titles across all three Divisions (12U, 11U and 10U) to claim the “triple-crown” title of the area. After sweeping the District, DRALL’s teams moved to Section 4 matches against teams from the greater Southern California area, spanning from Palos Verdes to Santa Monica. DRALL’s 12U team defeated the favored team from Palos Verdes in an epic 4-3 win and eventually fell to the West L.A. All-stars, finishing as the Section 4 runners-up. These wins add to DRALL’s exceptional history of championship play, which also includes being a 2022 SoCal State Finalist, Section Champions in 1980, 2022 and 2023; and being 10-time district champions!
Next, DRALL turns to fall ball training to help prepare for the spring season. DRALL’s fall ball registration will open soon, and will run from October through November. For more information on the league, please visit DRALL.org or follow them on social media @del_rey_ american!

Five unexpected benefits of getting str o nger
By Jeff Blair
Opinion: The media and our doctors educate us regularly on the importance of working out to maintain a high quality of life. While many are aware resistance training can increase muscle strength and bone density, several other benefits are less obvious. This month, I am going to discuss some of the lesser-known benefits of strength training. If you are considering starting a strength-training program, here are five benefits you might not have considered.
1. Improves Heart Health. While most people know cardiovascular exercises like biking, swimming and walking can improve heart health, strength training plays a role as well. Most medical organizations recommend doing both cardio and strength training (rather than simply doing cardio alone) to maximize heart health. Even the American Heart Association says combining strength training and cardio workouts is superior for the heart to cardio workouts alone. Strength training can help with body composition, lipid profiles and lower blood pressure, which can all lead to better heart health. Strength training may be especially helpful to help limit
our belly fat. One study showed women who strength-trained experienced a 30 percent improvement in cardiac mortality.
2. Improves Brain Health. Strength training has been shown to improve brain health in areas like higher cognitive function on tests, better memory and even increased willpower. While the reasons for this are not completely determined, strength training may increase blood flow to the brain and improve hormonal levels. Increased proteins from strengthtraining may contribute to better brain health for all of us, as well. There also seems to be a connection between maintaining leg strength and power and a high level of brain function. Some scientists believe those with stronger legs tend to be more physically active and this may have a brain protective effect. Much of the research around strength training and brain health considers the benefits for those over 60, but younger adults can benefit as well.
3. Improves Balance. Those who do not strength train can expect to lose 20 to 30 percent of their muscle across their adult life. This loss impacts the muscles which help us balance, such as those in the hips and upper and lower
legs. Strength training targeting these areas can help retain and gain muscle, which are crucial for balance. Strength training exercises on one leg can also improve balance as these exercises can help activate the muscles which help us maintain equilibrium. Many people do not exercise these muscles in their daily activities, so doing so in a workout can lead to both improved balance and greater confidence about balance.
4. Burns More Calories. Our body burns a certain number of calories each day. The more muscle we have, the more calories we burn. When you read this, you may think you need to be a huge bodybuilder or professional athlete to benefit from the musclemetabolism connection. Yet we can all benefit from having more muscle. Strength training will not give the average person huge muscles, but maintaining what we have can help us burn more calories on a daily, monthly and annual basis. These differences can create a real difference in our body composition over time.
5. Puts You in a Better Mood. Studies show strength training can release feel-good chemicals like endorphins in our body and elevate our mood. Depression and anxiety may also improve with strength training. Discuss
these benefits with your doctor. Strength training can increase personal confidence and even give some a stronger sense of personal autonomy and purpose, as well. When someone is going through a stressful time in life, the structure of a regular exercise routine can provide a sense of stability and control, when other things may feel out of one’s control.
The general recommendation from most major medical and health organizations is at least two full-body strength training sessions per week. When performed consistently, this level of activity produces most of the benefits listed in this article. Get instruction on proper form before increasing weights. Once you have learned correct form, increase weights appropriately and consistently. This approach will produce the greatest results!

Sorting through stuff, memories and beliefs
By Fay Craton
Opinion: What does the second half of summer mean to you? Is it enjoying warm weather and the last days of vacation? For many, it means preparation for a new school year or the final push to complete goals for the year. A major goal for me this year has been sorting through the stuff in my home. My home, purchased by my parents in 1962, has seen a lot of living and changes over the years. I have not always lived here. When married, I lived in Virginia and other parts of California. I returned when my mother asked me to come home. When my mother died last year at the age of 98, there was a build up of stuff in the house and garage as a result of a family who lived full lives.
For months, I have sorted through cabinets and boxes in closets, the attic and the garage. Seeing some of the items brought back memories of all types: sadness seeing forgotten projects; smiles when holding other objects; a sense of loss when seeing items brought from one of my homes when I did not live here; a sense of connection with my father when looking at a boat he carved and gave to me when I was a child; a memory of love when looking at teacups my mother and I collected together; and a sense of awe when looking at a plate once owned by my great grandmother.
Earlier while sorting today, I let my thoughts wander to how all of these things represent my memories and how my memories built the belief system governing my life today. I also thought about how, when holding onto the items, I sometimes felt empowered and at other times sad. Some of the stuff,
while full of memories, was just trash not worthy of taking forward into the next stage of my life.
Many years ago, while attending a “growth” program, the group leader had us make paper mâché masks. Close to the end of the weeklong program, each participant discussed how different parts of the mask represented parts of ourselves we needed to let go of in order for another part to live and thrive. The mask itself fell apart and was trashed years ago. However, the memory has always stayed with me and is worth holding onto. To grow into being the best person we can be requires letting go of beliefs which keep us from evolving. If we attempt to hang onto everything it becomes clutter in our brains, just as holding onto all possessions becomes clutter in our garages. Projects become lost. Valuable memories become covered over with minutiae and buried under cluttered thinking.
Valuable memories are those that contribute to a good sense of self-esteem, healthy living and an understanding of your unique skills. They are also the memories that contribute to an empowering connection with significant people.
My wish is for you to take the time to sort through the stuff in your life and the beliefs in your mind to uncover gems that inspire you to lead a healthy, contented, and connected life.

Ayara Thai celebrates 20th anniversary (cont’d)

chocolate cream, devil’s food cake, market cherry jam, whipped coconut, makrut lime and just the right amount of sweetness, shines on the menu.
“That is our privilege, that we are able to explore things and do this sort of interpretive dance with classical and non-classic dishes,” Cathy said. Their innovation and exceptional dining experience earned them a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand in 2019.
Both women grew up in the restaurant, often doing homework at back tables in between assisting and learning from their parents.
Neither sister planned to go into the family business initially, but after college and briefly pursuing other careers, they returned to Ayara Thai. Vanda, now 42, and Cathy, 31, share their parents’ love of cooking and looked forward to taking over the reins when Andy and Anna came as close as they will ever get to retiring. Anna, who staff and guests affectionately call “Mama,” still helms the kitchen, and Andy pops in every now and then to help out and opine on how things are going.
“Ayara is their fourth child. There are three of us, but Ayara is the fourth, and probably the favorite,” Vanda quipped.
The family’s only son, Peter Asapahu, is a PGA Golf Pro, but he lends a hand, occasionally, for events and busier periods.
The Asapahu sisters have enjoyed the freedom to experiment and take not only the restaurant’s cuisine but its business operations in new directions as needed. The restaurant is adding a full bar and charcoal grill next year, for instance. Last month, a collaboration with Yakitoriguy was a hit with foodies eager to get their hands on Thai/Japanese-inspired skewers and a
The restaurant was nimble during the COVID-19 lockdown, changing its meal service hours and beefing up its ability to respond to take-out orders.
The restaurant is still super popular with the take-out crowd who can enjoy their meal on the outdoor patio, and is also open for a sit-down dinner service from 5 to 9 p.m.
Ayara Thai is “a reflection of perseverance, hope, and constant gastronomic exploration,” Vanda said. If running one of Westchester’s most beloved restaurants wasn’t enough, in between thinking up exciting collaborations and special dining menus, Vanda is deeply involved in community and industry groups. This spring, she traveled to Sacramento to speak before state officials on behalf of the Independent Hospitality Coalition. Additionally, she was chosen for the prestigious James Beard Foundation’s Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, regularly attends Neighborhood Council of

CELEBRATING THE SOUNDS OF SUMMER
A LOOK AT SOME OF OUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM THE 2024 FOURTH OF JULY PARADE
There was not a more festive place to be on Independence Day than the 24th Annual Fourth of July Parade hosted by the LAX Coastal Chamber!
The theme, “Sounds of Summer” inspired nearly 50 entries to celebrate their favorite music and the melodies associated with the sunniest season: waves, buzzing insects, camping, baseball, classic rock and more!
St. Anastasia Catholic School took home the title of “Best Overall” for the second year in a row with their giant campfire-inspired float, complete with giant tissue paper flame and oversized marshmallows. A cold-spark firework
machine, which shot sparks into the air, created a major wow factor. “Best Spirit” went to Visitation for the school’s float that featured a replica of their campus’ “All are Welcome” mural. Their large marching group and bubble machines added to the entry’s fun. The “Mayor’s Award” went to Kentwood for its picnic-themed float featuring students, families, and of course, mascot Kenny the Koala.
Volunteers from the Flight Path Museum helped clinch the “Chair’s Award” title for their nonprofit, thanks to their colorful vintage airline stewardess and pilot uniforms.
Other standout entries included Grand Marshal Angel City Choir who rode down Loyola Blvd. on an openair bus with nearly 100 members of all ages while their hit rendition of Toto’s “Africa” played; WISH Community School’s tribute to nature and the outdoors and the Koshin Taiko drummers. Councilwoman Traci Park also made a special appearance to greet community members.
Thank you to major event sponsors: Decron Properties, the Stephanie Younger Group, LAWA, Hometown News, Drollinger Properties, Jane St. John RE/MAX Estate Properties,
Cedars-Sinai, Pacific Ocean Management, Unibail Rodamco Westfield, CD11 and Payroll Centric. A special shout-out also goes out to the Parade Committee, entries, volunteers, the residents of Loyola Blvd. and all the attendees who came out to celebrate! Next year, the parade will celebrate its 25th anniversary, so save the date!
