13th April 2013 – Daisy Hill

WELCOME TO THE SEMI-FINAL This afternoon we welcome Daisy Hill back to Brookburn Road, following our home fixture a couple of weeks back, for a fixture neither of our clubs was expecting. The reason for today’s game is that Ashton Town played an ineligible player in the cup quarter final game against us at Ashton as he had already featured in the same competition for Formby. Ashton Town then went on to defeat Daisy Hill over a two legged semi-final but on Wednesday night during the game at Eccleshall we received a call from the league management committee confirming that Ashton Town had been removed from the competition and WEST reinstated. The result is that we now have a one off semi-final game against Daisy Hill today, including extra time and penalties if necessary, to determine who will now meet Abbey Hey in the final. This unexpected outcome suddenly gives both of our clubs the incentive to try to get to the Divisional Cup final which was originally arranged for next Wednesday at Runcorn Linnets’ stadium. Should we be fortunate enough to reach the final we will keep everyone advised of the arrangements in due course, together with the new date for the postponed game against Irlam from today which is now likely to be played towards the end of the month. MAKING HISTORY This has been a historic season for the club and we have exceeded our pre-season expectations to consolidate in the top half of the league, with the unexpected bonus of a cup final appearance now within our grasp. We will be going all out to add to our current points total in our remaining games and with away fixtures at Ashton Town and Atherton Collieries next Saturday 20th April and the following Monday, 22nd April, there is still a lot to play for. Formby and Abbey Hey look unassailable as the top 2 but whether we end up 3rd or 6th this will have been a fantastic achievement in our first season in the North West Counties and the events of the past week mean we have a huge incentive in the games we have left. A BIG ‘THANK YOU’ We could not have achieved the degree of progression this season, or indeed the success of the past 4 years, without the huge input and leadership of Andy Nelson and his management and coaching team of Steve Eckersley, Steve Settle and Tony Holmes. They, together with the support of Rob Madden and Jim Hines with the reserves and our physios Winston and Neha, have all contributed a great deal for which we are very grateful. We have also enjoyed the stability provided by the core of players who have been a key part of our journey in recent years together with those who have joined us this season. Everyone has stepped up to the mark and shown great commitment to the club. The amount of thought, time, effort and energy put into weekly training and coaching sessions by everyone is enormous and gives us much to look forward to for the future. If we can secure that guaranteed FA Cup spot that will indeed be a historic achievement for our club. THE FINAL COUNTDOWN … After today it’s just three league games to play with a real tough one next Saturday away at Ashton Town. Ashton are hard on our heels in the league and have also had a great season winning the Atherton Charity Cup 10 days ago. The final away fixture is at Atherton Collieries who are also enjoying a great season and we’ll need to be at our best again to end the season on a high and add some further points from these games. PRESENTATION DAY … The final action here is on Saturday 4th May when we’ll have the usual end of season games and presentation of awards. Refer to information further on in this programme. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL AGAIN FOR OUR FINAL LEAGUE HOME GAME. We think the final home game against Irlam is likely to be here on Saturday 27th April but please visit www.clubwebsite.co.uk/westdidsburychorlton/ to keep abreast of this and other breaking news. Rob Turley Thanks to Mike Fryer for providing photos we use on the web and in the programme, on the front cover Mike has captured Mike Aston slotting home our penalty against Daisy Hill.

View from the Dugout We asked Andy Nelson on Monday (before the Eccleshall game) a few questions on last Saturday’s game and the season so far, his answers are below… What was your reaction to the LR game

Naturally disappointing after the hard work of the last couple of weeks, I thought the first half was a non event for us but we improved in the second half and showed much more endeavour but lacked quality. We have a great set of lads and it’s a credit to them all that we are in this position at all. Overall how do you think the season has gone?

I feel that we have surpassed all expectation in our first season at this level of football. I'm sure we would have taken mid table respectability so therefore to be challenging at the top has been excellent. What has been the biggest positive?

The biggest positive has been to put ourselves in with a chance of putting the club into the F.A Cup for next season. If we achieve this I feel sure that the occasion will be exceptional for all concerned at this club. A very proud day indeed whatever the outcome. What has been the biggest surprise?

The biggest surprise has been that in all competitions this season nobody has taken us apart. During our first season at this level and with the heavy commitment and increased games you would have expected to have been thumped by someone. Yes, we have lost games but that has been down to misfortune and naivety in certain circumstances rather than just not being good enough, therefore we have to be delighted with our application and preparation this season. Action shots from the game against Atherton LR…

LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON … The NWCFL fixtures will start on Saturday 3rd August but before that we already have some high profile pre-season games confirmed. The first of these will be against NORTHWICH VICTORIA FC on Saturday 13th July, kick off 3pm, and others will be posted on the website soon. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Our visitors… Daisy Hill Situated one and a half miles south of Westhoughton town centre and around four miles from Bolton, the village of Daisy Hill first saw football in season 1894-95 although it is possible that football was being played in the area for some years prior to that date. The first known honours for the club came in 1896-97 when the Wigan and District League Championship and the Westhoughton Cup were won without losing a match. The location of the clubs ground in those days is unknown but the present ground was used during the 1st World War period when the club played in the Leigh and District Senior Sunday School League. The club then joined the Westhoughton League and during the 1920’s and 1930’s won many honours in what was one of the strongest local leagues at the time. Notable players included Dick Pollard and Billy Farrimond, both of whom also went on to play cricket for Lancashire. Alf Watkinson, grandfather of the former Lancashire Cricket Club captain Mike Watkinson went on to sign for Blackpool and Tommy Woodward (Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough) also had a number of games for the club. Little is known of the period leading up to the 2nd world war but the club re-formed in 1951 playing in the Westhoughton League on the St. James Street Recreation Ground/Cricket Ground until the landowner made an offer to the club to return to New Sirs in 1957. The acquisition of the lease was a major step forward and gave aspiration to move into the Bolton Combination and develop into one of the most formidable clubs in the area. Dressing rooms were erected at the ground for the start of the 1968/69 season while on the field the club won the Bolton Combination Premier Division on four occasions, the Bolton Combination Cup on four occasions and the Lancashire Amateur Shield twice during the 60’s and 70’s. In 1978 the Club was accepted into the Lancashire Football Combination, and with the advent of the Non-League football pyramid and the subsequent amalgamation of the Lancashire Football Combination and the Cheshire County League the Club became a founder member of the North West Counties League giving them the opportunity to play in and bring national competition to the village. With the new pyramid set up requiring clubs to meet new standards for facilities, new dressing rooms and a clubhouse for social activities were erected at New Sirs in 1982. Since then improvement of the clubs facilities has been ongoing and for the 2005-2006 season a floodlighting system has been installed which has allowed the club to remain in the National League System and return to National and County competitions.

First team reports…Saturday 6th April: WEST 1

Atherton LR 2

This was a mild sunny afternoon but the recent drought resulted in a hard dry pitch surface with both sets of players finding it hard to keep the ball on the ground. WEST started positively enough and after 9 minutes Tre Baldwin had a good effort cleared behind and from the resulting corner a Dave Kilbride header was pushed onto the bar and over by the giant ALR keeper Cheetham. Unfortunately the visitors were ahead soon afterwards when a long ball forward saw the advancing Simpson shout ‘keepers ball’ only for Aston’s header to float backwards over both of them into an empty net make it 1-0 to ALR. West huffed and puffed but the young ALR side were giving nothing away and on 20 minutes doubled the advantage. A corner on the left was played short and as a West player dived in the ALR winger got to the bye line and hit a great cross into the area which was buried by No4 Boothey with a good close range header for 2-0. West were enjoying a lot of possession but running up against a stout defence and determined midfield harrying for every ball and enjoying the luxury of the two goal lead. Tommy Walsh was working hard against his marker and after 30 minutes set up Tre Baldwin whose rising shot was just over the bar. After 35 minutes Lee Shillito had a chance which again went over and as the first half ended West were left wondering where a goal would come from. Three minutes into the second half Tre Baldwin released Lee Malkin down the right and as he cut in along the goal line his low cross beat everyone including just missing the onrushing Walsh. This gave the team a lift and the chances began to come when first Woodcock carved an opening but shot straight at the keeper from 20 yards and then Callum Schofield thumped a first time volley inches over the bar direct from a corner. Gareth Thomas replaced Woody and on 56 minutes a well flighted free kick just ran away from Dave Kilbride on the penalty spot. Chances and half chances were coming West’s way as ALR began to tire and on the hour a Summers shot was deflected over the bar before Walsh turned his man only to find the keeper. Lee Malkin was then unlucky with another effort deflected behind and a good move involving Thomas and Settle ended with a Shillito strike going wide with the keeper stranded. West eventually pulled a goal back after 78 minutes when Malkin was on hand to turn the ball home after a goal mouth scramble but 2 minutes later ALR showed they were still dangerous when Schofield had to clear behind from a dangerous corner. West responded with a Thomas free kick which came to nothing, a late effort from Walsh which went narrowly wide, and finally another good chance when Malkin mishit his shot from a good position only to see the ball bobble through to the grateful keeper. There was no lack of effort from the team on the dry and dusty surface but it was one of those days when we were made to pay for a couple of mistakes and didn’t create enough clear cut opportunities to get something out of the game.

Wednesday 10th April: Eccleshall 0 WEST 1 The pitch was flat hard and firm and an end to end and very even open game saw a few chances missed at both ends and WEST grateful for a Mark Woodcock header after an hour which proved to be decisive. WEST created the best of the early chances with Lee Malkin and Scott Jones both going close and Gareth Thomas just wide with a low volley which he did well to keep down as the ball bounced up off the dry surface. It was 10 minutes before the home side got near the West goal and the first half chance was a long range effort which sailed high and wide. There was little to trouble either keeper with the nearest to a goal a flick over the keeper from Malkin which was gathered in at the second attempt. At the other end Ben Simpson was a spectator for most of the first half and the interval arrived with the scores level at 0-0. Eccleshall were a different proposition in the early stages of the second half and on 48 minutes went very close to an opener with a fierce drive which was deflected past Simpson and just wide of the goal. Ten minutes later and the home side’s best chance of the evening arrived when they had an extra man on the right flank who cut in at pace only to miss the target from about 12 yards. Those couple of early missed chances were to prove costly. On the hour the hardworking Walsh and Malkin were replaced by Lewis Schofield and Steve Settle. A minute later West got the breakthrough as Callum Jones advanced down the right flank and crossed for Woody to rise highest of a group of players and head home past the hapless keeper who just couldn’t keep the ball out. The remaining 30 minutes were at times both frenetic and erratic as both teams found close control almost impossible on the hard dry surface. The best moment came 5 minutes from the end when Tre Baldwin made a fantastic run at pace down the right wing and fired over a great cross from which Steve Settle’s downward header just lacked enough power and direction to add the second.

WHAT’S OUR

STORY?

Newly elected North West Counties League side West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West first played in the Manchester Alliance League until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as the League did not permit association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in that league until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. Many of the current committee were players in that league. The club played at Christie Playing Fields from before 1914 but had to relocate when given notice to quit by the Playing Fields Society in the mid 80’s when that body decided to sell the land for commercial gain. After several years nomadic existence the club kicked off the 1997-98 season at their splendid new home at The Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold and secured the new facilities via a Lottery grant, new sponsors and fundraising, but without a penny of help from the Playing Fields Society proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location in Chorlton and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won Manchester League silverware for the first time, lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final.

With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, who had previously managed at Leigh RMI, the 2009/10 season was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield, (the third consecutive year we have been in the final) and finishing runners-up in the league. The second team won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic points total (65 points out of 72 possible). This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in the history of the Manchester League dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The clubs ‘A’ team finished and the Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club in every sense. In recent seasons several players who started at West have been signed by top non league clubs, but such is the spirit of the club that many players return to what they see as a family club. The club now looks forward to fulfilling its ambition to play at the highest possible level it can whilst continuing to be run as a community club and transition to the NWCFL. The ground and facilities have been further improved and floodlights erected to meet grading requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. The club was duly elected to the NWCFL at the AGM on 16th June 2012.
