Welcome to NEW MILLS Good afternoon and welcome to the first Hallmark Security Premier Division game of 2017 against New Mills. We welcome their officials, players and supporters to Brookburn Road and we hope they enjoy our hospitality today. Our visitors have returned to the league this season following relegation from the Evostik NPL and it is fair to say that the season has not gone as expected so far and they arrive here in 20th place and on a run of 6 consecutive league defeats. The club therefore decided on a change of management last month and have appointed former Stockport Town manager Calum Sykes as their new manager. We wish Calum and his backroom staff every success in their new job. Several players have also followed the manager from Stockport Town so we will come up against a much changed team from the reverse fixture back in August when we produced an excellent performance to run out 4-1 victors. In the new management’s only game in charge to date they suffered a narrow 2-1 loss on Boxing Day at Atherton Collieries which should be enough of a warning to us that we cannot afford to take today’s game lightly.
Maine Road success Well what can we say about our last home game, the derby against Maine Road? Having put the match back 24 hours to maximise the attendance we were realistically hoping for a crowd of 400--500. We were therefore amazed at the final figure of 674, a new club record and the largest attendance in the league this season so far. Thank you to everyone who attended and we hope you saw enough on the day to encourage you to keep on returning. The clubhouse has never been as busy and we must say a huge thank you to all our officials and volunteers on the day who helped everything run smoothly. In addition to all our regular supporters there were non league fans from all over the country in attendance and the feedback on social media has been nothing but overwhelmingly positive. Special thanks must go to club secretary Rob McKay who did a fantastic job in promoting the game and putting the club name in the public domain. The game itself was a typically close fought local derby with honours even and both teams deserving of their point in 1-1 draw. Our last game saw another frustrating result at AFC Liverpool on New Years Eve when we saw a 2-0 lead turn into a 3-2 defeat. The game followed a familiar pattern as we created enough chances in the first half to have been out of sight at half time. Instead all we had to show for our dominance were well taken goals from Joe Shaw and Saul Henderson. Having conceded right on half time we then produced a disappointing 2nd half performance allowing Liverpool back into the game and they capitalised with 2 goals to win the game. We have new players to introduce in Jack Cookson, a goalkeeper from Congleton Town and Kevin McGrath a centre half from Runcorn Linnets. We hope they enjoy their time at the club. Additionally we have promoted 2 more promising youngsters from our youth team to the 1st team squad in Jerry McDermott and Paul Earlan who are now training with the 1st team with a view to introducing them to open age football in due course. On Sunday 15 January Brookburn Road will host it’s first women’s game when Chorltonian Ladies host FC United Women with a 2pm ko. We will also be hosting the Manchester FA Womens Cup Final here on Friday 28 April. Who’s up next? Our next 3 games are all away with a tough game at Atherton Collieries next Saturday 14th January followed by trips to AFC Darwen on the 21st January and Barnton on 28th January and as always we would appreciate as much support as possible. We return here on February 4th against Hanley Town. The details of the Easter ground hop have now been released and we will play Congleton Town here on Monday 17 April with a 2.45 kick off. Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoons Premier Division fixture against league fixture against New Mills. We would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to the management, committee members, players and supporters of New Mills and after today we wish them well for the remainder of the season. I’d also like to congratulate Callum Sykes on his appointment as the new manager of today’s opponents and wish him well as he tries to guide them out of the relegation zone in the coming months. New Mills come into today’s game on a poor run of form having lost all of their previous 8 games and are 8 points away from safety. A run which has prompted a change of management and as is often the case in these circumstances, New Mills have signed an entire new team in preparation for today’s game, primarily from Callum’s previous club Stockport Town and we will have to be at our best to ensure that we pick up the 3 points. Disappointingly we have only picked up 1 point from our previous 2 games over the festive period and it is really important that we sort that out today. Against Maine Road, in front of a fantastic crowd of over 670, this seasons highest league attendance, we controlled the game for all but 15 minutes. We had chances to extend our lead and unfortunately weren’t able to take any of them. This meant that we were always vulnerable with just a 1 goal advantage and sure enough, following 15 minutes of pressure we conceded another soft goal to snatch a draw from the hands of victory. It is worth stating that the day was an overwhelming success and credit should go to all of those people that have worked hard over the past 3 seasons to make our progress possible. When I first came to the club we were

mid table in the First Division playing in front of 20 people so to make the progress that we have is a testament to all involved. It was nice to see Andy Nelson at the game and I’m sure Rob Turley would have been looking down on us smiling. New Years Eve’s game against AFC Liverpool was even more frustrating than the Maine Road game and, rather fittingly was an accurate representation of our year in a microcosm. In the first half we were exceptionally good and had several great opportunities to score. We should have been 40 up and the game out of sight but a moment of very sloppy defending in injury time meant that we were only up 2-1. The 2nd half was a poor showing, we let Liverpool pass the ball with little pressure and individual errors ensured that we lost another game that we should have won comfortably. Whilst we were extremely disappointed to finish 2016 in this fashion we can now look forward to 2017 knowing that if we can put a consistent run together we can be a match for anyone in our league. Can I take this opportunity, on behalf of Brocks, Rob, Steve and myself, to send our best wishes to all of you for 2017 and here’s to hoping we are able to make continued progress in this calendar year. Hanley Town 1 West 2 Match report West made it three wins in a week with a hard fought 2-1 win in the first ever meeting against Hanley Town. West made two changes from the mid-week win at Glossop as Carlos Mendes Gomes returned to the starting XI having missed the mid-week game to allow himself to time to prepare for a trial game at Crewe Alexandra. Saul Henderson also returned to the line up having been cup tied in mid-week which saw Ben Steer and Jonny Poizer with the injured Rick Gleave forced to miss out altogether. It was West who took the initiative from the kick off and took the lead after three minutes when a Matty Kay corner was only cleared as far as Nic Evangelinos who superbly volleyed it beyond the Hanley goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area. It was a just reward for their early pressure. The game was just seven minutes old when Hanley went down to 10 men as a Hanley free kick was whipped in and saved by Williams who claimed the ball at the second attempt. However, Hanley’s centre half Joshua Thorpe took exception to Williams diving at his feet, kicking him on the floor before being dismissed for forcing his head into the West’s goalkeepers. West utilised their man advantage as Evangelinos forced a save from the Hanley goalkeeper Joseph Hemmings on 17 minutes. On 25 minutes Mendes Gomes latched onto a ball over the top, rounded the keeper, was tripped up by him but recovered, pulling his cross back to Matty Kay who forced another good stop from the Hanley goalkeeper. Two minutes later he was called into action again as Joe Shaw flicked on a free kick into the keepers hands. On the half hour mark it was almost 2-0 as Evangelinos was tripped but Kay reacted quickest curling an effort millimetres wide of the post from 25 yards out. Moments later Mendes Gomes and Kay combined with Kay saying his effort blocked before Evangelinos saw his

rebound superbly saved. On 33 minutes Henderson latched onto a cross from the left hand side but saw his header deflected onto the outside of the post. West continued to create chances up until the end of the first half but without forcing Hanley to make another save. The second continued in the same manner as a superb pass from Mendes Gomes found Henderson who in turn forced another good save from Hemmings on 48 minutes. At the other end Hanley won a corner but Danny Hope headed over unmarked. They were level on 54 minutes as a ball over the top allowed them to go through on goal, Paul Socha recovered but collided with the Hanley striker and the referee had no option but to give a penalty. Sean Mountford sent Williams the wrong way and fired his shot into the bottom right hand corner. West almost responded immediately as Henderson was found at the edge of the area firing just over on the turn. West continued to create chances as Anthony Potts saw his header deflected wide of the post but Williams was called upon to make a big save on 68 minutes after a long punt over the top of the defence. The save proved crucial as a minute later Potts rose highest to head home a corner at the far post to restore West’s lead on 68 minutes. Moments later Hanley responded as they headed over again from six yards out as they went for broke going all out in the search for a second. On 77 minutes Shaw went close again from a superb cross from substitute Ben Steer but the West midfielders diving header bounced just wide of the post. West introduced Rob Black and Jonny Poizer who both combined as the former combined with Kay to set up the latter as Poizer volleyed just wide before Black rolled an effort just wide of the post on the counter. In the dying stages West went close again as three efforts were superbly saved by the Hanley goalkeeper to deny Steer and Kay as West secured a vital three points to lift them back above the Staffordshire based side.
History of New Mills New Mills AFC, based in the High Peak of Derbyshire, have continually been at the forefront of organised football in the area. The Club's home ground, regarded as one of the most picturesque in non-league football, is situated opposite the impressive St George’s Church and has a splendid backdrop of Kinder Scout, which is the highest point in the Peak District National Park. The Club’s facilities are quite considerable. Covering well over three acres of land, the Club has a floodlit playing arena, an all-weather pitch suitable for a number of sports which is used by local schools and the local community in general as well as a thriving Clubhouse.
the following season saw the team break numerous Club records as they won the Division Two Championship by ten points. 2008/09 saw another trophy triumph, The League Challenge Cup, but following an unprecedented twenty one game winning run, promotion to The Unibond League was only denied by a last day defeat at AFC Fylde which resulted in the team finishing runners up on goal difference.
The game of football has been played in the town of New Mills since 1886 when the Club, originally known as New Mills St George's, first played in friendlies before joining organisations such as The North Cheshire League and ultimately The Manchester League. After playing at several grounds, the Club moved to their present home of Church Lane in 1922 and this coincided with a hugely successful period in the Club's history as they recorded two Manchester League titles and four Derbyshire Divisional Cup wins. These successes lead to average home crowds of around 2,000 and eventually saw no fewer than six players transferred directly to Football League Clubs.
Thankfully 2010/11 proved to be a case of third time lucky as New Mills finally achieved their goal of promotion to The Northern Premier League when they won The North West Counties Premier Division. Winning the first seven games of the season, Ally Pickering’s side set the pace from start to finish before being presented with the Championship trophy after the game against local rivals Glossop North End on Easter Monday. The team also reached the North West Counties League Challenge Cup Final but failed to achieve the double after losing narrowly to Winsford United. It was a successful season off the field as well as the Club achieved the prestigious FA Charter Standard Adult Club status which was an excellent recognition for all the hard work that has been put in by everybody connected with the Club.
More great days followed in the 1960's under the leadership of Joe Martin but following a move to The Cheshire League in 1974, lean times eventually lead to New Mills ceasing playing. Fortunately, local amateur side Birch Vale and Thornsett FC were looking for a new ground and within twelve months, they had adopted the name of New Mills and began to progress firstly via The Lancashire and Cheshire League and then The Manchester League. New Mills re-joined The North West Counties League in 2004 ( they were founding members in 1982 ) and enjoyed another successful period under the guidance of manager Tony Hancock and assistant Paul Kirkham. After winning the Second Division Trophy in 2007,
The 2009/10 season again saw The Millers as bridesmaids for the second successive season as this time Newcastle Town grabbed the solitary promotion place to The Evo Stik League. The Club also enjoyed success in The FA Vase and reached the last sixteen for the first time in its history before The Northern League’s Norton and Stockton Ancients spoilt the Wembley dream.
2011/12 represented a significant landmark as the Club celebrated its 125th Anniversary. Amongst many events which took place, probably the biggest saw Manchester United play a friendly game at Church Lane and the publication of “ The Millers Tale “, a book chronicling the history of the Club. That year also saw the first team’s debut season in The Evo Stik Northern Premier League and after being placed in Division One South, the eventual position of ninth represented a respectable finish.

History of New Mills continued… 2012/13 proved to be another roller-coaster ten months. It was all change as the first team were reallocated into The Northern Division and new manager Roy Soule lead his side into the play offs where they were eventually beaten in the semi-final by two extra time strikes from Trafford. The reserves secured the Club’s ninth Derbyshire FA Divisional Cup North success following a thrilling 5-4 victory over Dove Holes at Silverlands, the home of Buxton FC, in April. The Club’s Under 18 side, which further developed the working relationship with New Mills Juniors, also brought some silverware to Church Lane as they celebrated their inaugural season in The Stockport Metro Junior Football League by winning The Division Two title. 2013/14 was an all-together more trickier season with the Club having to overcome many hurdles, none more so than contending with the wettest High Peak winter in living memory which produced the inevitable March / April fixture backlog. The first team, who endured a high turnover of playing staff, eventually ended in a mid-table position in Division One North whilst the reserves finished as runners up to Glossop North End in The North West Counties Football League. The bright spark was once again provided by the Club’s youth team who lost only one game as

they won The Stockport Metro Junior Football League Division One Championship by a fourteen-point margin. The highlight of 2014/15 was undoubtedly provided again by the Under 18’s who completed the perfect League season – eighteen wins from eighteen games. A good number of these young players were duly incorporated into the Club’s new Development Squad who finished in a very creditable midtable position in The Western Division of The Lancashire League. Unfortunately, the first team endured a campaign of almost constant struggle and were only reprieved from relegation back to The North West Counties Football League by The Football Association in May. Manager Roy Soule, who worked tirelessly during his tenure at Church Lane, tendered his resignation during the summer and was subsequently replaced by former Stalybridge Celtic assistant Andy Fearn. In 2015/16 season Andy Fearn left the club less than 10 games into the season. ExGlossop manager Garry Brown took charge but couldn't prevent the club being relegated to the NWCFL where the club will play in the 2016/17 season. In December 2016, the club appointed Calum Sykes as its new manager.

West 1 Maine Road 1 Match Report The first South Manchester Derby of the season ended in a stalemate but was watched by a club record attendance of 674. Having moved the game back a day to avoid clashing with the Premier League Derby fever was in full affect as West supporters smashed the previous record of 460 set in July for the visit of FC United of Manchester. West Manager Steve Settle was able to name an unchanged side from the team that won away to Hanley Town with the back five remaining unchanged for the third consecutive fixture. The early stages of the match were a cagey affair unbefitting of both sides free scoring tendencies. Instead it was a tough tackling affair with both sides rising to the occasion and not allowing the other the space to play their natural game. In fact, both sides saw early bookings as Rory Breslin and Matty Kay were booked in the opening quarter of an hour. The game’s first clear cut chance came on 17 minutes by the way of the visitors as West goalkeeper Dean Williams was forced to push a hard low effort into the bottom left hand corner round the post before diving onto the rebound. Moments later Maine Road followed this up with a cross into the box finding an unmarked head but the effort was straight at Williams who claimed comfortably. On 19 minutes West responded with their first effort as a good cross from Paul Socha on the left found the head of Saul Henderson whose header flicked the ball on but Ryan Livesey was able to claim the ball comfortably. On 29 minutes Joe Shaw whipped a cross in from the right hand side into the path of Matty Kay but the West number 10 couldn’t divert it towards goal. He made no mistake on 34 minutes when Nic Evangelinos wonderful whipped cross found Kay 12 yards out and he powered his header beyond the helpless Livesey. It was Matty Kay’s 10th goal of the season and his 28th

for West taking him past Rick Gleave on the leading club goalscorers list in the NWCFL-era. It was West who finished the half the stronger of the two sides as first Shaw fired over from the edge of the area but Socha fired over after a Matty Kay corner reached him at the edge of the penalty. The beginning of the second half saw West forced into a change as Ben Steer replaced the injured Carlos Mendes Gomes and the young winger almost had an immediate impact as his long throw into the box was turned agonisingly wide of the post. West attempted to put the game to bed as a hard effort from Steer on 56 minutes was struck straight at the keeper before Shaw turned a free kick just wide of the post on 59 minutes. The best chance fell just after the hour mark as Evangelinos found Steer unmarked at the far post but he could only roll it tamely into the keeper’s hands. Maine Road, as ever, were undeterred and themselves grew back into the game as Williams was again called into action making a good save at his near post with 15 minutes remaining. On 79 minutes they went closer still as Matty Kay cleared a corner off the line after a huge scramble in the area which saw the visitors have multiple efforts on goal. However, the leveller came on 80 minutes when Williams came out to deal with a loose through ball only to mishandle it into the path of Callum O’Broady who happily dispatched into an empty net to send the Maine Road player into rapture. There was still one moment of late drama as a cross found Shaw at the back post, controlling the first touch he went for the overhead with his second only to see it flash wide of the post. That was the last action of the half as both teams took a deserved share of the points ending West’s three game winning run.

AFC Liverpool 3 West 2 Match Report West ended 2016 in familiar fashion as they surrendered a two goal lead as they were defeated at AFC Liverpool 3-2. The early kick off on New Year’s Eve captured the imagination of the West supporters as they made up a significant number of the crowd of 152. Manager Steve Settle was without Anthony Potts, Mark Rogers and Carlos Mendes Gomes who were all forced out injured from the Maine Road game with Ben Steer, Jordan Poole and Richmond Botchey restored to the starting line-up.

However, West switched off and Liverpool took full advantage as they worked the ball down the left before finding Jason Carey unmarked at the far post who finished from close range to reduce the deficit at half. The goal galvanised the home side and they opened the second half with a long range effort which forced West goalkeeper Dean Williams into a terrific save to push it round the post. At the other end Evangelinos found Steer with a terrific curled pass laying it off to Poole who fired just wide of the post from the edge of the area.
Despite the make shift nature of the side it was West who created the games first chance on 5 minutes when a through ball wasn’t cleared allowing Saul Henderson a clean run on goal but the ball took a bobble at the vital moment and his effort from 6 yards out cannoned off the roof of the stand. A minute later Matty Kay forced the first save of the game as his header was palmed away by the Liverpool goalkeeper Dominic Garner before Joe Shaw fired just wide with the rebound with an overhead kick. At the other end Liverpool headed wide from the edge of the area following a terrific cross from the right. The home side came more into the game as they had several long range efforts none of which were on target.
On 52 minutes a pass through the middle found Emini Adegbenro at the edge of the area but he couldn’t find the target. Six minutes later Liverpool were level however as Jack Leamey was allowed to advance with the ball before firing a 25 yard effort over the head of Williams, a superb strike.
On 28 minutes Henderson again forced a terrific save from Garner as he robbed the defender of the ball before unleashing a hard left footed effort towards goal. Two minutes later it was Kay’s turn again as he was played in by Nic Evangelinos but the keeper was equal to the task. The deadlock was broken on 34 minutes as Joe Shaw found space at the edge of the penalty and fired an effort into the bottom corner of the foot of the left hand post. A minute later he almost doubled his tally as Shaw headed a free kick onto the roof of the net.
West should have levelled on 70 minutes when a great cross from substitute Ben Woods found Henderson unmarked at the far post but he miss-controlled it with the goal at his mercy. The final 20 minutes saw few chances as the home side looked to extend their lead whilst doing a good job to restrict West to half chances. West might have levelled at the death as substitute Georgi Whyment countered, playing in fellow substitute Jonny Poizer who found Evangelinos but the West striker could only fire over.
The lead was doubled a minute before half time as Henderson received the ball at the edge of the area, neatly beat his marker and fired a low effort into the bottom left hand corner; a superb goal.

It proved to be the turning point and on 65 minutes Liverpool took the lead as another through ball released Adegbenro one-on-one as he rounded Williams and coolly slid it into the bottom of the net.
The game ended on a controversial note as the referee blew without adding an additional time for stoppages, despite several substitutes, goals, bookings and injuries, as the home officials clocked the game 10 seconds short of the full 90. However West were left to rue missed chances in the first half as they surrendered yet another two goal lead.
Player of the Month…Matty Kay Matty Kay was voted as the West December Player of the Month via Twitter vote beating Nic Evangelinos, Joe Shaw and Martyn Andrews for the award. Matty kicked off the month with a strong performance at Congleton Town where he was forced into the unfamiliar role of holding midfield in the narrow loss. Restored to his more natural role behind the striker against Radcliffe Borough he was again inspirational as West came from a goal down to draw with the Evo-Stik league side in the Lancashire Trophy. Although ultimately defeated on penalties on the night Matty scored West’s only successful effort in the shootout. At home to Winsford Matty Kay made it 1-0 early doors with a close range finish before supplying Saul Henderson for his goal in a 4-2 win. A 4-2 win followed away to Glossop in the
Manchester Premier Cup as Matty provided the key passes for the first two goals for Joe Shaw and Nic Evangelinos that saw West recover from a goal down to take the lead. Matty supplied two further goals against Hanley Town as first Nic Evangelinos gave West an early lead with a superb volley from Kay’s corner before a second corner was headed home by Anthony Potts to give West a valuable away win. Matty’s trend of scoring in derbies continued as he headed home on 34 minutes with a powerful header to give West a 1-0 lead against Maine Road (picture on centre spread) before finishing the month away to AFC Liverpool in which he battled on despite being injured early on in the match.
West Fan Experience Survey 2016/17 In May 2016 West teamed up with the Fan Experience Company to understand, identify and improve supporter engagement. This included a mystery shopper visit to a home game and whilst the club received terrific feedback the club has strived to improve its fan experience with every home game. This season has seen so many great occasions with the two South Manchester Derbies drawing crowds of 405 and 673 respectively whilst there was more than 700 people in attendance at the clubs annual community bonfire. Thanks to events such as the West Christmas Miracle and Friday Night Lights more than 4,500 people have attended West home games this season. However, we as a club, owned and run by its members, wish to continue to develop and continue the growth of the football club with the supporters at the forefront of everything we do as part of our vision to play at the highest level sustainably possible.

West to host Chorltonian Ladies v FC United Women …Sunday 15th January 2pm ko Brookburn Road will host its first women’s match of 2017 a little earlier than scheduled when they host Chorltonian Ladies and FC United of Manchester Women on Sunday 15th January, 2pm KO. In August 2016 West hosted the first ever women’s match to be played at Brookburn Road as they hosted an FA Women’s Cup match between Chorltonian Ladies and Warrington Wolverines. Wendy Booth will enter the record books as the first ever women’s goalscorer as the Wolverine’s ran out 2-0 winners to advance to the next round. Now, West will host their first ever North West Women’s Regional League match as ‘Chorlts’ return to Brookburn Road where they will welcome high-flying FC United of Manchester Women’s Team. Chorltonians are playing in their first season in the NWWRL having been promoted from the Greater Manchester Women’s League last season as ‘Invincible’ Champions and have adapted well to life the next level sitting in 9th place with 10 points from 10 games heading into the winter break. FC United are flying high in the league sitting in second place behind Merseyrail Bootle on goal difference with an impressive 31 points from
their first 12 games. In addition they have a NWCFL connection with new Manager Luke Podmore having turned out for Bacup Borough this season. The game will take place on Sunday 15th January, 2pm KO, and admission is FREE! With a large contingent of supporters expected to attend it should be a terrific occasion as West look to launch their own team in 2017. The bar will be open as normal serving food as well as hot and cold drinks, there will be a raffle and a special commemorative match day programme. With West set to face FC United themselves on Tuesday 7th February at Broadhurst Park in the Semi Final of the Manchester Premier Cup, the match at Brookburn Road should serve as a terrific appetiser.

2016 Premier Division review by Martin Fallon 2016 drew to an end last week, so we thought we would conclude our look at how teams have faired in this calendar year in the Premier Division. The year closes with Runcorn Town top of the Premier Division on 55 points, with four other teams in close proximity. But Town had a poor start to the calendar year, and looking at games from 1st January to the end of last season, they were actually in 21st place having picked up just 16 points from 20 games. It is actually their neighbours Runcorn Linnets who have had the best 2016 of all Premier Division teams, picking up 101 points from 46 games played. They are one of only two sides to break the hundred barrier, Atherton Collieries picking up 100 points from 48 games. One other amazing statistic from Linnets is that of 25 home games played in 2016, they lost just one and won a league high 19 games. At the other end of the scale, Cammell Laird 1907's poor end to the year, which sees them still looking for their first league win, means that they have picked up fewer points than any other team with just 26 points from 45 games. This is a lot lower than second bottom Nelson who have managed 37 points from 46 games in 2016 (note New Mills are

omitted after playing only half a season with us). Linnets were the side with most league wins (31 from 46 games), AFC Liverpool had the most draws (14 from 45 games) and Cammell Laird 1907 the most losses (31 from 45 games). At the other end its a similar story with least wins being Lairds (6 from 45 games), least draws being Runcorn Town (5 from 44 games), with least losses in 2016 being a tie between Linnets (7 from 46 games) and Irlam (7 from 41 games). Looking at goals, and nobody can touch Atherton Collieries who racked up 125 league goals in their 48 games. Runcorn Linnets (105) and Bootle (104 in 43 games) are the others over a hundred, with West Didsbury & Chorlton (98 in 43 games) just outside this. As for lowest scorers, again it is Cammell Laird 1907 having conceded 133 league goals, with AFC Darwen (111 in 45 games) and Squires Gate (104 in 48 games) the others over a hundred. Squires Gate and Atherton Collieries are the teams who have played the most league games in 2016 having played a whopping 48 league games. However the lowest number of games is not much lower than this with Maine Road having played just 40 league games.
