Welcome to AFC Darwen Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for today’s Hallmark Security Premier Division game against AFC Darwen. We welcome their officials payers and supporters and hope they enjoy our hospitality today. Darwen arrive here in 19th place having had a somewhat disappointing start to the season although their recent form has shown signs of improvement with creditable draws away to Congleton and Padiham and a victory over Barnton last Saturday. To meet print deadlines, these notes were written prior to Wednesday night’s games for both clubs. As always in this league we will have to be at our best to take the points today. Our recent home results have been poor with 4 consecutive defeats and we really need to start turning that around starting today. Despite the poor results the performances have for the most part been decent with two of the defeats against Irlam and Northwich coming in injury time. Our last game against Atherton Collieries followed a familiar pattern. We conceded in the first half from a deflected free kick and a penalty and turned round 3 goals down. We dominated the 2nd half but could only pull 1 goal back through Rick Ainsclough and despite several chances being created we once again ended the game pointless. This means that after our game last Wednesday at Runcorn Town we have played the top 3 in the league in succession.

New signings We have made 2 recent additions to the squad. Goalkeeper Andy Robertson has joined us having spent last season at Glossop. He has vast experience at this level and will hopefully help us to keep more clean sheets. We have also signed forward Saul Henderson from Maine Road. Saul has an excellent goalscoring record in this league and we hope he continues his good form for us. We welcome both players to Brookburn Road Other news We are taking this opportunity to remind supporters that our Community bonfire takes place next Saturday 5 November following our home game against Ashton Athletic. Details are available in the clubhouse For the statisticians out there Brookburn Road recently hosted it’s first ever womens FA Cup tie between Chorltonian Ladies and Warrington Wolverines. The visitors were victorious and we wish them well in the next round. The club has recently approached the Manchester County FA to offer to host their womens Cup Final. After today we visit Nelson on Tuesday 1 November before hosting Ashton Athletic next Saturday and Padiham in the Lancashire Trophy on Tuesday 8 November Who’s up next? Tuesday 1st November – Nelson (a) 7.45pm ko Saturday 5th November – Ashton Athletic (h) 3.00pm ko Tuesday 8th November – Padiham (h) 7.45pm ko Our Manchester Premier cup tie against Glossop North End at Glossop has now been arranged for Tuesday 29 November.

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoons Hallmark Security North West Counties Premier Division match against AFC Darwen. After a challenging start to the season Darwen have picked up of late beating Barnton and getting credible draws away at Congleton and Padiham. We hope their officials and supporters enjoy our hospitality and after today we wish them well for the remainder of the season. We come into today’s game on the back of a substandard run of form that has seen us win only one of the last six games. Whilst we have had to endure an extensive injury list there are no excuses and the quality of player we have assembled should have been able to pick up more points than we have done. It’s particularly frustrating because anyone that has seen us earlier on in the season knows that we are capable of being a very good team at this level. We have spoken so much about wanting to be more consistent in our individual and collective performances so to see us perform so inconsistently is doubly frustrating. The game against Atherton Colls is a perfect example of this. Soft free kick and soft penalty in the first 20 minutes saw us go 2-0 down despite having a guilt edged chance to make it 2-1 before half time we end up going in at the half 3-0 down and completely out of the game. Then in the 2nd half we were exceptional penned them in, scored a really good goal and had 3 or 4 additional chances. I’m hoping that 2nd half performance will be enough of a spark for us to build some momentum as we move towards Christmas. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome 2 new additions to the squad. We have brought in goalkeeper Andy Robertson from Glossop and striker Saul Henderson from Maine Road. If I’m honest, Brocks, Rob, Steve and I have been a little disappointed with some of the goals we have conceded in the last

month. ‘Rubz’ has a wealth of experience at higher levels and will add to what we have already got in Hayden and Deano. I’m hoping this increased competition will lead to us keeping more clean sheets and subsequently winning more games. Saul is a tall striker but is by no means just a target man. Many of you will remember him tearing us apart at Maine Road a couple of seasons ago and following a season or so of instability, I look forward to seeing him scoring goals for us on a regular basis. The boys have an opportunity now to make something of the season. Starting with today we need to get back to winning ways and a strong November can see us climb back into the top 5. On the injury front we still have an extensive list I’m afraid. Alongside long term absentees Simmo, Rogers, Lilley, Gavin and Mason we also have some niggles with Ben Steer struggling with his hamstring and Johnny Pozier struggling with a foot complaint. I know Paddy and Winston are working hard behind the scenes to put the right rehab programmes in place but we just seem to be on the wrong end of some bad luck at the minute! As always thanks for your support and enjoy the game!

NWCFL Premier Division – Results (after 25 October)

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

THE FORMATION OF AFC DARWEN At the end of the 2008/2009 season Darwen Football Club ceased to exist after the club was wound up due to bad debts. One of the previous owners had systematically destroyed the club financially but, also discredited its reputation within the town which resulted in lower attendances and a reduction in the number of volunteers that gave up their valuable time to help keep the club running. With debts in excess of £60.000 it was inevitable that the club could not survive; fortunately the team managed to fulfil all of their fixtures in the 2008/09 season before the club was wound up. It was decided that Darwen still had the desire to field a town team, and although various people had left the club; meetings began to take place to discuss the future of Darwen Football Club. Derek Slater, former club secretary and reserve team manager of Darwen FC, had already set the ball rolling by forming AFC Darwen, a not for profit organisation. The lease was then secured back from the local council and AFC Darwen rose from the ashes. THE WEST LANCASHIRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE The F.A. instructed that AFC Darwen would start life at step 6 in the football pyramid, so their inaugural season began in the West Lancashire Football League. The aim of the club was to gain its place back in the North West Counties League, and go on to compete at a higher level. The club now had a good solid foundation, with 13 youth teams representing the club; which out of those 10 played on a Sunday in the East Lancashire Alliance and 3 teams competed on a Saturday in the Accrington and District Football League. With the age range from 7 to 15 year olds and with new teams to follow the infrastructure of the club was in a sound position to move forward. The club is now in the hands of people that live and breathe football, but more importantly understand what it takes to run a club at this level. AFC Darwen’s first ever competitive game took place at the Anchor ground on Saturday 11th July 2009 in a preseason friendly against AFC Liverpool from the North West Counties League. With Darwen winning 3-0 things looked bright for the future. With high expectations of a good season AFC Darwen soon realised that life in the West Lancashire football league wasn’t going to be easy. Results over the first few games were inconsistent up until October 2009, after which the team went on a disastrous run of 8 straight defeats.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

With the realisation that the team was not progressing as expected, it was decided that a change in the management team was required. The difficult decision to replace Dennis Hill was made and Kenny Langford took over the reins as the first team manager. THE NORTH WEST COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE. At the end of the 2009/10 season AFC Darwen gained re-election back into the North West Counties Football League after achieving the required ground grading standards to compete at that level. The main aim of the club back in the NWCFL was to steady the ship and cement their place in the league. AFC Darwen finished 13th. During the close season before the start of the 2012/13 campaign the structure of the club changed. Due to personal reasons and business commitments Derek Slater decided that he could no longer run both the senior and junior sides. It was decided that Kenny Langford would become the sole director of AFC Darwen; the structural change resulted in Kenny taking over the day to day running of the club, and the responsibility for the first and reserve teams. This allowed Derek the time to focus on the development of the junior teams within the club. The 2013/14 season proved to be disappointing for the first team, finishing 9th, with a record of 15 wins, 7 draws and 14 defeats, goals scored 64, conceded 64. However they had successful cup runs; yet again reaching the semi-final of the first division trophy. They also reached the semi-final of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy narrowly losing to Chorley. This was a major achievement with AFC Darwen being the first club at North West Counties league level to reach a semi-final in such a prestigious competition. The reserves under the leadership of Mathew Pilkington won the clubs first silverware by winning the reserve division cup; beating Irlam on penalties after the tie finished at 2-2 after extra-time. It was also decided that for the club to progress the youth teams would have to be fully amalgamated to the club and play under the same L.F.A. Registration as the first and reserve teams At the start of the 2014/15 campaign, not many could have predicted just how incredible the season would turn out to be. AFC Darwen got off to a good start and looked to be one of the favourites to gain promotion, however with the team competing well in the cup competitions and the weather starting to play havoc with the fixtures, Darwen soon found themselves with a mountain to climb. The club was dealt another blow when Kenny stepped down as manager due to personal reasons. "At least the majority of players remained at the club"

History of AFC Darwen continued Nick Lloyd took over as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. Although one or two players left Nick managed to strengthen the squad, and he also promoted players from the reserves. The club policy of fielding a reserve team proved pivotal towards the success of the first team at the latter stages of the season due to injuries and suspensions. After beating Ashton Town in the First Division Cup Semi-Final at the end of March, Darwen embarked on a mammoth 9 league games in just 20 days, winning 8 and drawing 1. This herculean achievement pushed the team into third place and into the enviable position of a home tie in the play off semi-final and final. With a 2-1 win against Chadderton, Darwen set-up an home tie against 4th place Hanley Town in the first ever NWCFL play off final. What made the effort even more outstanding is that during the 20 day period Darwen played the league champions Atherton Collieries in the Reusch First Division Cup Final. It was to be a memorable night winning the cup with a fantastic 3 - 1 win against a very good side. In front of over 840 spectators; the NWCFL biggest crowd of the season for a league game Darwen produced a stunning performance to defeat Hanley Town 5 - 3 and win promotion to the Premier league. Not only did AFC Darwen do the double by wining promotion and division cup, other significant milestones where also achieved. No Darwen/AFC Darwen team had scored over 100 goals in a season since the NWCFL was formed in 1982, and two players scored 30 plus goals. Everyone involved with the AFC Darwen new that the 2015/16 Season would be a big test for the club "no one could have envisaged the hardships to follow" Peter Devine, ex-professional player took over as first team manager; however after just one pre-season friendly Peter resigned "Possibly the shortest appointment in the history of football" The season started with Nick Lloyd and Matt Pilkington at the helm as the caretaker management team. Pre-season didn't go well with some heavy defeats and it was clear that it would be a long and difficult campaign. The season started off with only 3 points from the first six games, during that period AFC Darwen went out of the Emirates FA Cup, losing 2-1 at home to Washington "On paper this was a game that the team was expected to win" this was major blow to the club financially. Part way through the season the reserves reigned from the league due to lack of players which left the first team short of resources. AFC Darwen then appointed a new management team, bringing in Neil Prince and Neil Black. Neil Prince an ex-

professional had previous managerial experience with Bootle and Prescott Cables and brought a wealth of experience and knowledge. AFC Darwen picked up 16 points from a possible 36, during this period. AFC lost against West Auckland Town in the FA Vase at home 4-2 another game they were expected to win. Towards the end of Neil Prince's reign the team suffered some heavy defeats losing 5 games in row including the West Auckland game, AFC Darwen conceded 24 goals, which pulled them right into the relegation fight. During this period it was evident that there was significant unrest in the camp, so the difficult decision was taken to replace the management team. In came Paul Marriot along with assistant Scott Campbell. Paul had previous experience at local side Eagley. During his time at Eagley, Marriott built up the club throughout a successful five years before he returned in 2013 as director of football. Throughout the five years he culminated the winning of the League Cup, the Bolton Hospital Cup and the Lancashire Shield which is seen as being one of the most prestigious cups in the county for amateur football teams, he also took them to second in the West Lancashire Premier Division. Paul didn't get off to a good start, going out of the MEN United cup to AFC Blackpool 3-1 at home. Out of the 13 games in charge AFC only recorded 2 victories. during this period AFC Darwen conceded 49 goals and continued to struggle near the bottom end of the table, on their current form they were destined for relegation back to the first division. After the 3-1 home defeat to Congleton Paul resigned as first team manager. Scott Campbell "the fifth manager in a turbulent season" took over, however the club recognised that he required some support; in came Adam Douglas who for some reason had been overlooked by the previous manager after suffering from injury earlier in the season. The impact on moral was immediately evident and the team had regained the will and desire to fight for survival. Although they lost their first two games in charge performances significantly improved and you could feel the sense of desperation lift from around the ground. The relegation fight went right to the end; going into the last game of the season AFC Darwen required a draw or win to secure premiership football. AFC Darwen produced a fine performance, beating Cammell Laird 1907 4-1 to maintain their status. With 13 games left it looked unlikely that they would survive, but the whole management team along with the players played a significant role in changing the fortunes of the club " a massive achievement" AFC Darwen finished 18th, winning 12 (5 of which were down to Scott Campbell and Adam Douglas) 7 draws and 23 defeats, scoring 82 league goals and conceding 111.

History of West…PART 3 – The Twenties…continued 1922-23 saw the first eleven register their first honours when finishing as runners-up to Royton in Division 1 and also reaching the final of the Rhodes Cup a competition named after H W Rhodes who served as League President from 1909-1934. . As we have already mentioned, West Didsbury was akin to a village club and this final induced several coachloads of spectator to travel to Urmston for what turned out to be the most eventful Rhodes Cup final in the history of the league. The opposition were Bradford Parish, a young up and coming side who had just won promotion as champions of Division 2. At the end of normal time the scores were level and extra time also failed to produce a decision. Both teams were leg weary but ordered to play a second period of extra-time, and Bradford Parish found themselves reduced to 9 fit men as two of their players were too exhausted to continue. The West Didsbury team refused to play on against only 9 men and so the officials had no alternative but to replay the final and ironically Parish won this match and lifted the cup. Bradford Parish won 2-0 with both goals coming from penalties scored by Jimmy Hampson who went on to enjoy an illustrious career with the likes of Manchester United and Blackpool. However the attitude of the West Didsbury club did not go unnoticed and league officials were so impressed that a special plaque was commissioned and presented to the club to commemorate their sportsmanship.

The following year, 1923-24, was a case of runners-up honours again as the League introduced a new Aggregate Trophy awarded to the club whose 1st and 2nd eleven achieved the highest combined points total for both divisions. The obvious strength in depth at West Didsbury was reflected when the club finished with 60 points just behind Urmston who won the new trophy. So, after four years of league membership West Didsbury had been the ‘bridesmaid’ in every competition – Divisions 1 & A, the Rhodes Cup and the Aggregate Trophy, but the first outright success was to follow immediately in the 1924-25 seasons. It was the Aggregate Trophy which was secured ahead of rivals Bramhall, and although Bramhall had pipped the 1st eleven in Division 1, the combined points haul of 62 proved enough to at least see the name of West Didsbury engraved on a Trophy after all the near misses. One interesting footnote in the records mentions the performance of full-back Lester Edwards, whose goal in a 7-1 home victory over Cheadle Hulme in February 1925 was his first in the L & C League in which he began playing with another club all the way back in 1911-12.

From the 1920’s to 2017… The development of our Club will continue next season as we plan to run a West Women’s team.

Around the league…from last Saturday’s games… with Ian Templeman Yellow goal fever You can’t argue with a side that racks up 6-0 wins in successive games, so it’s hats off to Ashton Athletic, who followed up their six-goal win over Nelson in midweek with another at Cammell Laird 1907 on Saturday. It was a fine way to bounce back from two successive defeats in their previous games, and it rounded off a week that also saw extensive improvements carried out on the approach road and car park to the club’s Brocstedes Park. If the Yellows keep up this form, the journey to the car park will be the only comfortable aspect of a visit to Brocstedes for future opponents in the coming weeks. Nine fine on the road for Alport Whitchurch Alport’s form this season, especially on the road, is worthy of a mention after their 3-0 win at Silsden on Saturday. The victory was Alport’s ninth in succession away from home, and their fifth straight win, form that has not surprisingly propelled them back to the top of the table. With six of their next seven games scheduled to take place at Yockings Park, the challenge now is for the Shropshire men to prove that they can deliver the same sort of form consistently on home soil.

Widnes on a roll One team quietly going about their business at the moment are Widnes, who had a blank day on Saturday, but continued their good form in midweek with a fine 2-1 win at promotion chasing City of Liverpool. That victory made it five wins out of six for Joey Dunn’s side, and if that form continues, combined with games in hand on those above then in the table, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the second half of the season. Charnock on fire – anyone not terrified? League or cup, home or away, it doesn’t matter to Charnock Richard at the moment. Saturday’s FA Vase win over Premier Division Barnoldswick Town extended their winning run to ten successive wins, and in those games they have only failed to score less than three goals on one occasion – and that was at Evo-Stik League side Bamber Bridge when they won 2-0 in the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy. A Twitter message on the club’s Twitter feed after Saturday’s win said: “Draw for the next round of the FA Vase is looming, anyone fancy playing us?”. Only the brave would say yes at the moment. Sandbach looking good Another of the newcomers who have adjusted quickly to life in Division One are Sandbach United, whose win at Carlisle City on Saturday continued a run of for that has seen them win four of the last five games and keep three clean sheets in the process.

West 1 Atherton Collieries 3 match report‌Tuesday 18 October West succumbed to another home loss on a cold and wet night at home to Atherton Collieries.

dummied by Sherlock and Brad Cooke drilled home the loose ball unmarked at the far post to give Colls a 3-0 half time lead.

There was a reshuffle for West with goalkeeper Andrew Robertson handed his debut whilst Ben Woods was drafted in at left back with Rob Black and Matty Kay returning to the starting line-up. On the bench there was a place for Carlos Mendes Gomes. Colls led after just five minutes when they were awarded a free kick at the edge of the area after Anthony Potts was harshly adjudged to have committed deliberate handball. Gareth Peet's free kick took a deflection off the top of the wall but was powerful enough to find its way past Robertson to give the visitors the lead.

To West's credit they immediately upped the tempo in the second half and Kay went close with a 25 yard effort which flashed just wide of the post on 49 minutes. A minute later a superb angled cross along the six yard box almost found the stretching Jonny Poizer but he couldn't quite get on the end of it.

West responded well but fell behind to a second goal on 32 minutes when Richmond Botchey was adjudged to have fouled Darhyl Mason at the edge of the area. Dave Sherlock fired his penalty down the middle giving Robertson no chance to give the visitors a two goal lead. West's best chance of the half came on 37 minutes as a free kick was whipped in low to Ash Woods but he forced a superb block from Adam Reid at point blank range. Moments later Ash Woods was involved again combing with Kay whose shots was deflected over. A minute later Ash Woods went close again heading over unmarked. The points were wrapped up in first half stoppage time as Ben Hardcastle went raced down the right, his cross was

West pulled a goal back on 54 minutes after good work from Poizer saw him lay the ball off to Rick Ainsclough who slotted a superb effort into the bottom right hand corner from 20 yards out. A minute later West almost halved the deficit as Kay's goal bound effort was blocked before Ash Woods curled just round the post. West searched for a second to try and bring them back into the match but the visitors defended well and might have added a fourth on 75 minutes when they clattered the crossbar with a header from a corner. West finished strongly and should have had a penalty with eight minutes remaining when Ash Woods was pushed inside the area. Two minutes later Woods was involved again forcing another top save from Reid in the Colls goal before superbly blocking from substitute Mendes Gomes inside the six yard box. However it was too little too late as West slumped to yet another home defeat.

Last time we met… West 4 AFC Darwen 2 …23rd January 2016 West recorded their first win of 2016 scoring four at home for the fourth time this season in a thrilling 4-2 victory over AFC Darwen. West started the game brightly and created a chance inside the first minute as Nic Evangelinos was allowed to turn and shoot at the edge of the area but his shot was straight into the keeper’s hands. On nine minutes West led as a long ball from Ben Richardson, filling in at left back, flew over everyone but the bounce deceived the keeper allowing it to go over his head and Matty Kay reacted quickest to head home on the line to give West a deserved, albeit freak lead. AFC Darwen levelled on 21 minutes when a long ball into the box fell to Andrew Bell after two West defenders had got in each other’s way and he stroked it into the bottom right hand corner. Darwen launched an attack and Jonathan Hession was adjudged to have been brought down on the corner of the penalty area. Buckley-Smith guessed the direction of Conor Gaul’s penalty correctly but despite getting a hand to the ball couldn’t prevent Darwen from taking the lead. West rallied and thought they had levelled on 38 minutes when Ash Woods and Evanelinos combined with a quick one-two at the edge of the area before squaring it to Matt Eckersley to finish from two yards but Woods was adjudged to have been offside. Two minutes later West did level as Nic Evangelinos drilled an effort high into the Darwen goal to bring the two sides level.

ball but the Darwen goalkeeper charged out of his goal and flattened the West striker with the referee brandishing a red card for serious foul play leaving Darwen a man down going into the break. Despite their disadvantage Darwen still continued to pass the ball and play on the counter but West finally took the lead on 60 minutes as West’s pressure in the penalty area finally paid off as Darwen failed to clear a West attack, the ball fell to Matty Kay who superbly lobbed the sub Darwen goalkeeper to give West the lead for the second time in the game. On 72 minutes Woods powered into the penalty area, his shot hit the inside of the post, again, with the rebound falling to Kay who again was denied by another great Darwen block. On 76 minutes Woods finally got the goal his play had deserved as he raced into the penalty area, rounded the goalkeeper and rolled it into the back of the net with Ben Richardson following up to ensure it crossed the line. Kay had a further chance to secure his hattrick lobbing a looping pass into the six yard box onto the roof of the net whilst Darwen had two chances in stoppage time to reduce their deficit. First Buckley-Smith was called into action at his near post blocking away a shot before the resulting corner was headed over at the far post.

The games major talking point came in the first minute of stoppage time as Woods ran onto a through
