HUMANS OVER CARS
This is a rave, a response to predictable rants: I am a long-time West End resident (renter and owner) and am hugely supportive of the permanent pedestrian plaza at Robson and Hornby, as Arthur Erickson long envisioned and was so long prevented by the tyranny of the car over all else.
The new buildings on Davie Street, and elsewhere, certainly won’t solve the affordability crisis but as we know from San Francisco, not building is disaster. What Vancouver needs is citywide rezoning for multi-unit properties. This is likely not politically realistic, starting with the fact I am once again dis-
appointed with my West End neighbours who rant in the May 19 issue about how changes to benefit human beings on foot are slowing them down in their cars. –David Ebner
PAVING PARADISE
Today I came across the quotation below while in the small local library
I frequent, and immediately thought that it applies well to our attempts to rescue our beloved West End from the evils perpetrated by many architects, engineers, designers, developers, bureaucrats, and politicians who view things mainly from the standpoint of, “Can we do it?” rather than from the more responsible question of, “Should we do it?” The Joni Mitchell song “Big Yellow Taxi” sure had it right: “They paved paradise to put up a parking lot.” The following quotation from author Kunal Sen needs to be tattooed on the forearm of every social planner: “There would remain no sign of you ever having played in this house. Your childhood is going to be swept under a camelskin rug and elevators are going to be built over the lake we once swam in. This address, as we know it, would be lost forever and we’ll wake up in a box-sized room: cramped, trampled and sensationally unhappy.” -Gary Pennington

Burnaby actor Michael J. Fox’s star adorns Granville Street. Grant Lawrence photo
Granville Street’s foresaken StarWalk Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence
If you’re like me, you’ve probably walked over those bronze stars embedded into Granville Street’s sidewalks thousands of times. You might spot a few names you recognize, like maybe The Beachcombers star Bruno Gerussi, or jazz chanteuse Diana Krall, or rocker Bryan Adams. You probably also walk over plenty of names you don’t recognize, like Ray Collins (a veteran character actor who died in 1965) or Pat Morgan (a mid-century radio star). It seems many Vancouverites don’t know the story or significance behind Vancouver’s two-block “StarWalk”. Here’s the quick lowdown: the StarWalk began back in 1992 as the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame’s (BCEHF) effort to permanently and publically recognize famous Vancouver entertainers and industry leaders who have “enhanced the province’s cultural profile, both locally and on the world stage.” Granville Street, with its history of theatre, music and vaudeville, was the obvious location choice, and one the BCEHF doesn’t regret, despite its descent into debauchery. Four or five stars are added to the sidewalk each year. There are currently 205 stars. Just last week, the 2016 StarWalk inductees were announced: actor Michael J. Fox, gospel singer Marcus Mosely (the Sojourners), composer Hal Beckett, bhangra star Jazzy B, and punk legend Joe Keithley. Those five get their own bronze stars on Granville and their photo added to the StarWall photo gallery in the Orpheum Theatre’s upper mezzanine. A baker’s dozen of “Pioneers” were also inducted, including musician Linda McRae and notorious Penthouse Nightclub owners the Filippone Brothers. They

all get added to the brass Honour Plaque in the main lobby of the Orpheum. BCEHF president Rob Haynes is thrilled with the diversity of this year’s StarWalk list, which was selected in part by public nominations collected earlier in the year, and by the BCEHF board of directors. “It’s definitely our most unusual list of inductees in many years,” says Haynes. “We have a superstar actor in Michael J. Fox, and a renowned composer in Hal Beckett.” (Among many other highlights in his 30year career, Beckett arranged the national anthems for every country represented at the 2010 Winter Olympics.) “Joe Keithley is without a doubt the first punk musician to be honoured with a star,” declares Haynes, “and Jazzy B has been called the ‘Michael Jackson of India’ by the NewYork Times.” The bhangra musician from Surrey has been singing and performing around the world to mass acclaim for decades. “Oddly enough, tourists seem to spend more time looking at the stars than Vancouverites,” states Haynes. When I asked him why that is, Haynes simply felt that tourists were “more inquisitive” than the average Vancouverite. Maybe it’s also because Vancouverites don’t know or understand the story behind so many of their homegrown stars. The bios of each can be found at BCEntertainmentHallOfFame.com, and there is a saga worth reading behind every one. Michael J. Fox’s star was embedded into the sidewalk last week, right in front of the Commodore Lanes bowling alley, and nestled beside Sarah McLachlan’s star. Sure enough, the first people to stop were Brazilian tourists. One of them was a neurologist whose hospital had received funding from Michael J. Fox’s charitable foundation. She was thrilled to see his name honoured. It’d be nice if the Vancouverites who walk over those stars every day showed some of the same reverence. W
Vancouver now has the largest homeless population since the city began counting the number of people living on the street and in shelters. A city report released Tuesday revealed 1,847 people were recorded as homeless when city staff, politicians and volunteers conducted a count over two days in March. The total surpasses the previous high of 1,803 people counted in 2014. The city has led or participated in homeless counts in Vancouver and the region since 2005. “They are sobering numbers,” said Vision Coun. Geoff Meggs after hearing city staff’s presentation at city hall on the 2016 homeless count. Of the 1,847 counted, 539 were recorded as living on the street and 1,308 in some form of shelter. Last year, 488 people were on the street and 1,258 in shelters. The increase in homelessness has come despite the provincial government opening 13 supportive

housing buildings in recent years and the city securing four former hotels to house more than 400 people at risk of homelessness. The unpredictable marker in each count is the number of new homeless, with 61 per cent (about 1,127 people) telling volunteers this year they had been homeless for less than one year. While the Vision-led administration of Mayor Gregor Robertson has repeatedly lobbied senior governments for more housing, this year the Vision team has shifted the focus to the provincial government needing to do more to address the main drivers of homelessness. Those drivers include
poverty, lack of treatment for addiction and mental health, low welfare and disability rates, young people aging out of foster care at an early age and high rents. “You can build a lot of housing but until you turn off that tap, homelessness will exist and it’s showing up all over the province,” Vision Coun. Kerry Jang told reporters. =J$"> NP1>!!G,DRAP53>; 6P5;$>;
PROVINCE ANNOUNCES MORE MONEY FOR TRANSIT
Despite commitments made by three levels of government, Metro Vancouver’s painful, drawn-out transit funding deadlock isn’t over. Last week Peter Fass-
bender, the minister responsible for TransLink, announced the province would spend $246 million over three years for transit improvements in Metro Vancouver. Fassbender maintained the funding was an increase of $130 million over the one-third funding the province had previously committed, because the money announced today was for bus, Seabus and Skytrain expansions. Fassbender said the province had previously only committed to pay for one-third of the cost of major capital projects: light rail systems for Surrey and along Vancouver’s Broadway Corridor. But Metro Vancouver mayors say that commitment still comes up short because the province has only agreed to fund the first three years of a comprehensive 10-year, $7.5 billion plan drafted by the mayors in 2015. “The phase one funding will put into play some of the elements of the plan,” said Linda Hepner, mayor of Surrey. “What it doesn’t put into play is the elements of preparation for the advancement of those other dollars. =L>R .8E 4>R$:G 95:$R>:: $R ,DRAP53>;
Fight continues for environmental justice David Suzuki Science Matters @DavidSuzuki
Biologist Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was published in 1962. The book – about widespread agricultural pesticide use and how toxic chemicals like DDT were threatening insects, birds and other wildlife – garnered widespread acclaim and is heralded as a catalyst for the modern environmental movement. That same year, a pulp and paper mill in Dryden, Ontario, began dumping untreated mercury waste into the Wabigoon River – more than 9,000 kilograms up to 1970. The mill was upstream from several First Nations communities, including Grassy Narrows, home to the Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishinabek people. Mercury contamination has triggered an ecological crisis that has devastated the local environment and community members’ health to this day. The Wabigoon River has been sacred to the people of Grassy Narrows for generations. Along with the chain of lakes through which it runs, the river provided fish, drinking water and nearly full employment in guiding and commercial fishing. But shortly after the mill started dumping, mercury began
appearing at alarming concentrations far downstream and throughout the entire food chain – in the sediment and surface water of lakes and rivers, where bacteria converted it to toxic methylmercury, which accumulated in the tissues of fish, aquatic invertebrates and people. Silent Spring introduced the concept of bioaccumulation, the increasing concentration of toxic material from one link in a food chain to the next. Scientists who have monitored mercury in Grassy Narrows found the higher up an organism is on the food chain, the more mercury it contains. Top predatory fish, such as northern pike, have more mercury than fish that eat insects, such as whitefish. Grassy Narrows’ residents have elevated levels of mercury in their blood, hair and other tissues from eating fish and other aquatic foods as part of their traditional diet. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin. Because of chronic mercury exposure, people have suffered from numbness in fingertips and lips, loss of co-ordination, trembling and other neuromuscular problems. Mercury poisoning has also been linked to developmental problems in children, which persist into adulthood. Japanese researchers, who have monitored the health
of Grassy Narrows’ residents since the early 1970s, concluded that many suffer from Minamata disease, named after the Japanese city of Minamata, which was poisoned with mercury when a chemical company dumped tainted wastewater into Minamata Bay in the 1950s and ‘60s. Grassy Narrows is at the centre of one of the worst toxic sites in Canada. Scientists have found dangerously high concentrations of mercury in area lakes more than 50 years after initial contamination. One meal of walleye from nearby Clay Lake, a traditional fishing area, contains up to 150 times the amount of mercury deemed safe by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Because of mercury contamination, the Ontario government closed Grassy Narrows’ commercial fishery in 1970 and told people, particularly children and women of child-bearing age, to avoid eating fish. Though well-intentioned, this policy worsened residents’ health by encouraging them to replace a staple wild protein source with store-bought food, which is inferior in quality and nutritional value. Fish are a traditional food of Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario, and their harvest and consumption are important for
culture and health. Fishing is also a protected treaty right.Years of case law, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada’s 2014 Tsilhqot’in decision, have drawn attention to the fact that treaty and Aboriginal rights enshrined in Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution are meaningless if Indigenous peoples can’t continue to live off healthy populations of wild game, fish and plants. A recent scientific report found that Grassy Narrows’ Wabigoon River can be cleaned up, and the fish can become safe to eat again – but only with political will. The underlying message of Silent Spring, that everything is connected, is tragically playing out in Grassy Narrows. The people there have resisted degradation of their lands and waters and are leaders in the environmental justice movement. It’s time for the provincial and federal governments to join with Grassy Narrows to clean up the Wabigoon River. No single act would go further to illustrate that a new era has dawned in our relationship with Indigenous peoples and our shared environment. You can help by signing the David Suzuki Foundation’s letter to the Ontario and federal governments at Action2.DavidSuzuki.org/GrassyNarrows. 7 K>D;R SP;> D8 4D3$@.5F M5"$EP;'E W

@Jennifer_AGCTK This week has been all about seating for clients and in my travels around the city hunting for the perfect finds, I came across an awesome selection of seating for eating. From benches to chairs to stowaway options, here’s a roundup of my top five picks for stylish dining.

2
Custom reclaimed dining bench. Available at Longwalk Lodge, 230 East Pender; $895. Old World glamour meets historic industrial. This communal-
style bench has strong local roots: the grand fir beam was salvaged from a Hastings Street demo and the antique claw feet were hand-gilt by Edward McKeever of Strong River Painting, all beautifully combined by the in-house design team at The Lodge.
3

Sick of sneakers? Try another kind of lace-up Niki Hope Style File
@NikiMHope Are you tired of sneakers yet? Hard to imagine feeling that way, but for some it is the end of the road for the runner/skirt combo, and they want something a little more feminine. This summer’s big footwear trend is the lace-up sandal. The dance-inspired look adds a little fun to summery looks, and here are a handful of lace-up shoes that will do just that.
1
For a little deep purple and a vintage feel, opt for the Vince Camuto Tarita suede caged sandals, $175 at Hudson’s Bay and TheBay.com. The darling shoes are sure to add a little kick to your step in a colour that is both neutral and unique. Pair with ‘70s-inspired attire, and you’ve got a look that

would make Stevie Nicks proud.
2
Comfort is key with these flat lace-up gladiator sandals in clean white, $213, from J.Crew and JCrew.com. As flats, these numbers promise to merge function and fashion. These flats would look lovely with a loose-fitting calf-length Aline skirt, or a pair of anklegrazing pants.
3
For a slightly heeled and narrow gladiator, try the Frye Brielle leather sandal in a soft neutral shade, $348 at Hudson’s Bay and TheBay.com. The heels aren’t too high, but add a bit of femininity to the lacy look. The colour would work beautifully with black pants or skirt and a white summer blouse.
4
For a slinky lace style, opt for the Jeffrey Campbell Rodillo-Hi wedge sandal, $198 in soft nude at Nord-
strom Pacific Centre and online at Shop.nordstrom.com. Another gorgeous and ultrasexy shoe that will elevate not just your physical height, but the overall look as well.
1
5
Also from Nordstrom Pacific Centre, the Larissa sandal by Coach ($307). These may be my favourite of the bunch for their minimalist styling, clean leather and flattering heel. These would style nicely with skirts, denim, and cropped pants, finishing the look like a bow on a gift box.
6
Love these lace-up wedges from Gentle Souls by K. Cole – a line of footwear that literally lives up to its name. The strappy vampy numbers cost $275 at Gravity Pope and GravityPope.com and offer an edgier alternative, with a style that would look amazing with a black jumpsuit that shows off a lot of leg and a little bit of lace-up wedges. pork leg that is served in delicate slices that practically evaporate on the tongue. If you’re not into paying $20 for a few slices of ham, there’s a lovely serrano for $14. Apart from charcuterie and some really nice manchego, there are tasty items like the serrano-wrapped fingerling potatoes ($5). Served with fresh aioli, the ham is crisped around the warm, creamy tubers. It’s a great match to the lamb “lollipops” ($13), roasted and served with warm bean salad and grilled confit fennel slices. Definitely try the slow-cooked and pulled goat ($10) served simply with salsa verde and toast. The meat is flavourful, earthy and forktender. A classic pissaladière ($5) is a nice, light snack, as are the scallops crudo ($13). The latter are served with a squeeze of lime, a scattering of white anchovy, and crispy bits of the Serrano. It’s a lush and refreshing dish, and paired with the sherry flight ($10) – try to include a Manzanilla sherry – makes for excellent noshing. Some items were less suc-
cessful, like the watermelon and feta salad ($8). Cucumber, goat cheese and mint should make for a successful combination, but the watermelon was over-ripe and spoiled the balance. Crema Catalana ($6), the Spanish version of crème brûlée, was lovely and light, although the burnt sugar top was so thick that the required forceful tapping produced a small explosion of cream that spattered my dining companion. A little less sugar-and-blowtorch action next time would make this quite perfect. Apart from that, Cabrito looks to have a successful formula in an ideal space. The neighbourhood is definitely welcoming the new arrival, judging by how fast the room filled up on several nights, and I’ll be going back for more lamb and scallop soon. W Food: !!!!! The room hasn’t gone through a major makeover – the fabulous patio and garage-door window are still there – but there is a stunning bull mural by local artist Yared Nigussu and some cool new tiling. The wine list is mainly Spanish, apart from a single BC red and white, and the cocktails are smart and well-crafted. Spanish and local ales round out the menu, along with some virgin offerings. Cabrito is the brainchild – and first ownership project – of chef Alexandre Carrier. If you’ve eaten at DB Bistro, Le Parisien, or Les Faux Bourgeois, chances are you’re familiar with his food. Carrier previously worked at several Michelin-starred spots in France and there is a distinct French flavour to his menu, along with a healthy focus on local ingredients. Four Winds wins Beer of the Year
KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen
For the second year in a row, Four Winds Brewing Co. has blown away the competition at the Canadian Brewing Awards. Building on its 2015 Brewery of theYear success, the Delta operation took home 2016 Beer of theYear at the awards gala in Richmond last weekend with its Nectarous Dry-hopped Sour Ale. If we’re adding up our fingers correctly, that’s basically a marquee medal away from a dynasty. It will be interesting to see if Four Winds can top its back-to-back wins next year, but Nectarous is just one example of how the threeyear-old brewery continues to push the envelope. “We’re always thinking of new and innovative approaches to beers, and this beer we actually created almost two years ago and we’ve been refining it ever since,” said Four Winds co-founder Adam Mills. “Now it’s a trending style and there’s a lot of people trying to do it, but we were one of the first.” Adams explains that Nectarous began as a brewers’ experiment with lactobacillus, aka the souring culture used in yogurt. The result is a bright, effervescent, assertively tart ale that is tropical fruit-forward with a dry finish. It generally sells out within a week of hitting shelves, so watch for the next batch to arrive at private liquor stores throughout the Lower Mainland by the middle of next week, followed by locations on Vancouver Island and in the interior the week after. Furthering its CBA streak, Four Winds also picked up two golds, a silver and a bronze on Saturday. And while the 2016 Brewery of the Year award, determined by a panel of nearly 40 seasoned beer judges, went to Ontario’s Side Launch Brewing Co., BC breweries were well represented throughout the spread, taking home almost a third of the 165 medals. You can check out a who’swho of top-ranked beer at Vancouver Craft Beer Week at the PNE this weekend, so keep this full list of BC winners handy:

to champion the underdog, which Sauvignon Blanc is anything but. This wildly popular grape certainly doesn’t need my help in terms of promotion. Rather, it is a vast sea that requires navigation. I totally understand Sauvignon Blanc’s appeal. Pungent and zingy, it’s instantly recognizable and ultimately thirst-quenching. I’ve indulged in many a satisfying glass. My complaint is that somewhere along the way too many slightly sweet, soft, dumbed-down versions started infiltrating the market. Sauvignon Blanc became plagued by an innocuous sameness. While Sauvignon Blanc always tastes like Sauvignon Blanc, it can offer diversity. And it deserves to be known in all of its variations, from overtly herbaceous to intensely tropical, with others showing restraint and minerality.Though it’s usually aged in stainless steel to preserve all of those bright and vivacious aromas and flavours, the occasional example might see a bit of oak for added intrigue. What better time than late spring to explore the refreshing world of dry Sauvignon Blanc? The assertive flavours of asparagus, arugula, watercress, scapes, basil and mint have inspired me to crack a few bottles. Here are a few recommendations that go beyond simple gooseberry and lemon juice. As I put these together, there were plenty of other delicious gems that I left out. VANCOUVER CRAFT BEER WEEK
10 beers to try at VCBW Stephen Smysnuik The Growler @StephenSmys
In case you’ve been wearing earplugs for the past 10 days, Vancouver Craft Beer Week is in full swing right now. The main event – a massive three-day tasting festival taking place at the PNE – starts this Friday, where there will be three stages of live music, huge swaths of people and beer, beer galore! So much beer. Some might even say too much beer, what with more than 100 breweries and over 400 beers available. It can be tough to navigate an environment like this even if you’re educated on craft beer – never mind if you’re just starting out! And because this festival is designed to turn newbies on to craft beer, The Growler will be onsite facilitating the Growler Challenge – a curated guide to the festival
that doubles as a scavenger hunt. Collect 10 stamps from 10 different breweries and you could win you some nifty prizes. Or, you could just read this list and chase these beers down instead. Either works, but none of the beers recommended here will be featured on the Challenge. There’s a lot of love to spread around, people! Enjoy.
FIELD HOUSE SOUR WHEAT GOSE
This German-style sour is a refreshing, flavourful brew from one of most promising new local breweries. It’s made using coriander, elderflower and salt from Vancouver Island Salt Co., giving it a citrusy, slightly salty flavour.
BRIDGE BREWING CO. SIDE CUT IPA
Bridge has created what’s arguably the shining local example of a North East IPA, one of the BC’s newest beer trends. This is a
FOUR WINDS BREWING NECTAROUS SOUR ALE
This beer is a masterpiece and was recently recognized as the best beer in Canada at the 2016 Canadian Brewing Awards. It’s an ideal sour beer for people who think they don’t like sour beers or want to see what all the fuss is about. Nectarous is approachable, with a complex flavour profile balanced by tropical fruit esters, and a clean and tart finish. Amazing.
cirtrusy, cloudy brew with hints of lemon, grapefruit tropical fruits and a mild hoppy bitterness.
33 ACRES OF SUNSHINE
Sunshine has been around for a couple years already, but it’s a perfect introductory beer for people who think they don’t like beer. This is one of the most consistently approachable, drinkable, refreshing and well-crafted summer beers available in BC, and is honestly good for any occasion, for any level of beer drinker.
PERSEPHONE PALE ALE
Here’s a sessionable pale ale for folks who enjoy the hops without wanting their palates obliterated. The light malt base is balanced by a citrusy hop flavour.
TWIN SAILS HEFEWEIZEN
For my dollar, this is the best hefeweizen made locally – which ain’t bad for a brewery that’s barely seven months old. It’s crisp but very flavourful, with notes of fruit and a little spice. Very approachable, very delicious.

STEEL & OAK/STRANGE FELLOWS VCBW COLLAB BREW TU MEKE SAISON
Steel & Oak will be pouring this year’s collaboration brew, a full-boded saison that’s made with Tasmanian Pepperberries, giving it notes of fresh cracked pepper along with raspberry, citrus and currant. Don’t let the pepper throw you off – this beer is a killer. Get it while you can.
RED COLLAR BREWING BELGIAN WIT
Kamloops’ Red Collar is one of the more underrecognized breweries in the province. Helmed by veteran David Beardsell, its lineup of beers is consistent and

dependable. His Belgian Wit is one of his more approachable brews – a cloudy wheat beer, brewed with Seville oranges and coriander, making for a very refreshing summer sipper.
POWELL STREET CRAFT BREWERY WITBIER WITH GINGER & CARDAMOM
I haven’t tried this one yet, but it sounds mighty appealing. Here are Powell Street’s tasting notes: “Fresh ginger and cardamom seeds lend bright, zesty aromatics to this unique take on a Belgian-style witbier. Complex and refreshing, this beer will pair beautifully with spicy foods or sunshine.”
I only vaguely recall knocking back multiple taster glasses of this beer at Victoria Beer Week. I don’t recall how it tastes even remotely, but I do sort of remember singing its praises to C12 co-founder Karen Kuzyk. I’ll let Karen’s tasting notes educate you: “Our Wild IPA is fermented with an untamed wild yeast call Sacc. trois. This yeast imparts an enticing tropical fruit aroma with a slightly tart finish that complements our hop profile. The result is an assertive IPA with layers of luscious fruit, citrus and spicy character.” I literally couldn’t have said it better myself. W

Music lovers on the West Coast mourning the loss of the three-day Squamish Valley Music Festival this year have something to look forward to this coming weekend.
For the past five years, Squamish has been the premiere place to catch up-and-coming homegrown acts. The city was atwitter when Live Nation Canada announced it was pulling the plug on the August long weekend event, leaving beerloving audiophiles with nowhere to spend their money and time. But thanks to Vancouver Craft Beer Week (VCBW), Vancouverites won’t be missing out on the opportunity to
catch some wicked tunes with a draught in hand. With more than 120 breweries and 400 beers on tap, this three-day bill of local brewing and musical talent is just the beginning of a new lease on live music in the city. Held at the PNE Fairgrounds, the VCBW Beer Festival kicks off Friday, June 3 and runs until June 5. Headlining acts include Vancouver’s own Boom Booms, JP Maurice, and locally-famed Peak Performance Project winner Good For Grapes – just to name a few. “This is the first year we’re really focusing on music at the festival,” says Leah Heneghan, VCBW’s events director. Heneghan is one of a team of four founding members of the week-long fête, along with business developer Paul Kamon, marketing director Chris Bjerrisgaard, and technical director Tyler Olson. Since its humble beginnings seven years ago,VCBW has grown exponentially – and so, too, has its cultural influence. “We had our very first beer festival at [Main Street’s] Heritage Hall with 100 people. If the beer festival sells out this year, it will be 18,000 people over three days, so it’s this phenomenal growth,” Heneghan reveals. In 2009, there were less than 40 breweries provincewide, including the big-ticket names such as Molson and Kokanee. “By the end of this year, there will be 140,” Heneghan says. Of course, with a more than threefold increase in BC breweries, it only makes sense that VCBW would expand as well.
IT ALL STARTED AT HOPAPALOOZA
“The first event we ever had was at the Alibi Room,” says Heneghan. “That was Hopapalooza, and the Alibi Room back then was really ground-breaking in the craft beer scene. [Nigel Springthorpe, Alibi Room’s owner] had some amazing beers that nobody else in the city was
The VCBW Beer Festival runs June 3-5 at the PNE Fairgrounds and features a full music line-up of BC artists. Contributed photo getting and he had all of these taps, so having the first craft beer week event there was awesome.” Since Hopapalooza’s inaugural event, musical acts such as Rich Hope have provided sonic entertainment, merging an appetite for beer with a love of tunes. “In the beginning, it was just a week, and there were a whole bunch of events during that week. After that first year, there were so many people who were interested in it that the next year we moved it to the Armoury, which was 1,400 people over two days. That in itself – that kind of growth in one year – was pretty crazy,” says Heneghan. “So the festival kind of became the closing festival for beer week.We still do all the events leading up to the festival, but that’s kind of the big build-up in a lot of ways.” Having evolved from dinner and beer pairings to sold-out niche events, Heneghan and crew saw an opportunity to expand VCBW with the public’s (and their own) interests in mind. “It’s still a scary thing and you never know if your events are going sell out or if people are going to come to the festival,” she says. “[Hopapalooza] crashed our website two or three times in a row with people trying to get tickets. It sold out in eight minutes one year.We took a risk on ourselves and it’s going well. “We keep growing an
changing every year because we want to create this beer experience that all of us wants to experience ourselves.”
FINDING HARMONY
It should come as no surprise that when it comes to organizing a music festival, a certain harmony is necessary to achieve. That’s why Heneghan and crew paired up with CFOX and Wet Ape to bring talent to the stage. The rock radio station hosted the #willplayforbeer competition via social media, which gave local bands the Brass Action, Dakota Pearl and Disco Funeral an opening slot on the main stage for each day of the festival. “At the PNE [last] year, we did Craft Beer Fest at The Fair, and we helped them organize a 1,000-person beer fest for the duration of the fair. They’re kind of like the perfect partner for us.” Another perfect pairing? VCBW’s annual beer collaboration, the proceeds of which are donated to charity. This year’s beer collaboration is between New Westminster’s Steel & Oak and Vancouver’s Strange Fellows Brewing. “It’s a French saison with Tasmanian pepperberries and New Zealand hops, and it’s delicious,” Heneghan gushes. The brew’s beneficiary is MusicHeals, a not-for-profit charity aimed at providing increased access to music therapy for patients in children’s hospitals, seniors’ centres, palliative care, AIDS and HIV programs, at-risk youth, rehabilitation, and more. The

Aaron Ross of the Boom Booms: My favourite local brew is the brand new – actually not officially launched but I got to sneak pre-brew it – is the Parkside Dawn Pilsner. Adam Leggett of Dakota Pearl: I love the Stanley Park Pilsner. Every time I go to a restaurant and I’m ordering a beer, that’s the one. It’s simply fucking delicious. We have this awesome place called Mile

ROBERT MANGELSDORF @robmangelsdorf
Savannah Leigh Wellman’s voice is a powerful thing. Simultaneously sultry and haunting, it’s the driving force behind the ethereal indie rock sound of her band SAVVIE. Oozing with swagger and rhythm, SAVVIE’s debut album, Night Eyes, represents a marked departure from her previous folk project, Redbird. Produced by Matt Rogers (The Harpoonist And The Axe Murderer) and released on Tiny Kingdom Records, Night Eyes helped propel SAVVIE to CBC Searchlight’s final 25 last month. Westender caught up with Wellman ahead of her performance at the VCBW Beer Festival CFOX Stage this Sunday, June 5. What has the process been like creating and producing the Night Eyes album? What does the album mean to you? Night Eyes was an opportunity for me to make an album that sounded like the music I love
listening to. No restrictions, no overthinking, just writing songs that excited me. It was the first time I had taken a more collaborative approach to writing, which allowed me to push my own musical boundaries and ideas to new places. What was it like working with Matt Rogers? It was fantastic to work with someone who really valued and embraced my influences and what I wanted to achieve. We had the same vision in mind, which made sharing and critiquing each other’s ideas an act of respect rather than judgment. For you, what’s the creation process like? How do you deal with writers block? There’s two sides of the writers block debate that most people argue – one is that you can’t force the muse, and the other is that you have to go to work on it,
like anything else. I think I sit somewhere in between – you absolutely have to make time for yourself to be creative. Without the time and space dedicated, you’ll never get anything done. That said, just because you’re sitting there ready to write, doesn’t mean something great will come out.Truly, I find the best ideas come when I’m not trying – when I’m walking down the street, and realize I’m whistling a tune I don’t recognize. As a Vancouverite is there anything about the city that you draw influences from? I love the fact that I can walk down to the water and for a moment, forget that I’m in the city. It allows you to escape the day to day without having to drive to a remote cottage somewhere – it’s like a shortcut to getting in touch with yourself. I think that’s incredibly important when you’re trying to write. W

VANCOUVER CRAFT BEER WEEK THE GROWLER GUIDE TO REVIEWING BEER WITHOUT BEING A DINK ABOUT IT And so it is with tongue planted firmly in cheek that we proceed. Please follow our advice and if you're having some of the following unsavoury thoughts, please think twice before putting your review on the World Wide Web. While possibly meaning well, you may just end up publishing “A Dink Review”.
NO
YES
HATE
DINK REVIEW
A double espresso at Matchstick, then I walked over to Sal y Limon and ate the beef tongue sandwich with extra tripe accompanied by all 12 of those delicious spicy salsas, after which I polished off two boxes of Tic-Tacs, plus a packet of spearmint Excel gum because my mouth felt funny and the billboard says bad breath isn't sexy.
ALTERNATE ENDING
Before reviewing this/these beers, decide: will you be trying to find all the things you LIKE about it/them or all the things you HATE about it/them?
GREAT!
Find a beer (or six) to review
What was the last thing you ate or drank?
YES
Are you planning on reviewing this beer after a small sample-size glass?
DINK REVIEW
I am planning on drinking at least a full pint and to be honest I’ll probably be polishing off a sixpack before I pass any judgement.
After which… I went home to brush my teeth because my mouth felt funny and put some toilet roll in the freezer because my belly felt funny.
DINK REVIEW
I’m an omnivore. I like all styles. I just wish these local breweries could make a REAL IPA...I think I’ll review this local IPA.
I usually only like IPAs but I’m going to review this pilsner I’m probably gonna hate.
NO...
It’s clear what the brewer was trying to achieve and I know what I like but this brew just doesn’t cut the mustard. But like my granny always told me “If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all.” I’m still gonna tell Starburrpd I drank it so I can get my badge, but maybe I’ll just elect not to give it a star rating.”
Do you consider whether the beer is true to style and/or what the brewer is trying to achieve?
Yeah, sure
If I find what I suspect to be off flavours in a beer, I give the benefit of the doubt. I don’t review it, I make a mental note to go back to it at a later date. If there are still problems, I probably won’t drink it again. I’ll talk shit about it to my beer nerd buddies, but I won’t give a negative review online.
DINK REVIEW NO...
YES
Are you prejudiced toward certain beer styles?
Sure, that stuff crosses my mind, but how can a pilsner, no matter how well made or true to style, possibly get more than 3.6 stars on Starburrpd?
YES Do you find yourself carefully considering your criteria for what makes a good beer?
ALWAYS A GLASS OF WATER
NOT A DINK REVIEW !!!
I’ve had a decent-sized sample of this beer and I’m feeling completely satisfied with the fireworks exploding on my tastebuds. I couldn’t drink a full pint, but I don’t think that’s the idea.

FIRST THINGS FIRST...
ARE YOU EVEN THIRSTY??
Am I thirsty for more when I’ve had three already? That to me is the sign of a beer worth reviewing.
NO
DINK REVIEW NO
I’ve never really liked anything I’ve ever had from this brewery but I’m going to review their latest release because: a) I’ve never had it before and I need to get my badge on Starburrpd; b) I must be the first to review everything; c) It’s basically my job to review it; d) The brewer could really benefit from my expert opinion.
I like exploring all different styles, it just depends what I’m in the mood for.
Uhh, yeah kinda.
Nope!
I don’t give a flying fart if it’s true to style or what the brewer is trying to achieve, if I don’t get my face blown off with every sip…
OBVIOUSLY Have you just added “recognizing off flavours” to your impressive arsenal of beer expertise? Now you’re finding phantom traces of diacetyl and acetaldehyde in every single beer you drink?
I just love exploring what’s out there and I judge each beer on its own merits.
ARE YOU PREJUDICED TOWARD CERTAIN BREWERIES?
How to review beer
(without being a dink about it) GROWLER STAFF @thegrowlerbc
Hello and welcome. It’s time to learn. Don’t be frightened. Your brain could use the stretch. Right – before we offer you some advice on how to review beer (without being a dink about it), here are some tips on how to properly taste the stuff. You should find these pointers useful-ish, whether you find yourself judging in your first Beer Judge Certificate Program-sanctioned competition, or simply hanging with the pals who may or may not be super freaky beer nerds and want to analyze what they’re drinking rather than just, y’know, enjoying it. We remember the beer scene when it was just starting to take off in Vancouver. “Craft Beer Enthusiasts” loved to remind their swishy, sniffy, spitty, wide-nostriled winesluggin’ counterparts what a gaggle of snobby lah-deedahs they were, and that they should all just unplug that cork from its unholiest of positions and enjoy a relaxed beer for once. My, how the seasons have turned. The uptight, elitist attitude of these new-era Craft Beer Enthusiasts shaped us into thinking certain beerrating websites should be completely rebranded. Like Ratebeer.com – how about Hatebeer.com? Or Hate95%ofBeer.com? Or how about a new app (patent pending) called Starburrpd, which gives
6

beer-drinking or -sipping users the ability to rate the resulting belches out of five stars, giving points for aroma, flavour, body, etc.? Fractions of stars not OK. So anyway… here are those promised tips on how to properly taste beer:
FIND THE RIGHT GLASSWARE
Ideally a tulip, or something in which you can get some turbulence going to release the aroma, and wide enough to stuff your big ol’ conk (that’s a nose) right in there.
SERVE AT THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE
Beer at 3 C tastes completely different at 8 C.
CARBONATION IS IMPORTANT
Pour the beer carefully, and make sure the beer you’re tasting hasn’t been sitting out too long (aka gone flat) and before you bestow your ultimate, allconquering final judgment on it and condemn it to the fire pits of Mordor and/or Hatebeer.com
WET THAT WHISTLE! GO ON! TAKE A BIG OL’ GULP!
Swallow, don’t spit. This is the opposite of a wine tasting…and any other disgusting thoughts going through your head right now.
HAVE BREAD AND WATER
Palate cleansing between tastings is a good idea.
BRING FRIENDS!
Beer tasting shouldn’t be an individual sport. Let’s make it a party. Remember? You need to swallow anyway, so why not get all pissed up with your friends while carrying out this very important duty. All the real judges do it.
EXPERIMENT A LITTLE.
Try tasting blind, so as not to be swayed by brand loyalties.
(BONUS ROUND) OUTFOX YOUR SNOBBIEST FRIEND
Pour a few of the exact same beer’s in a tasting flight and watch them choose the best one, then laugh at their expense. That’s it. Make sure your tasting panel is drinking the same beer at the same time. Chat about it, but be confident in your own assessment and, especially, your preferences. Try not to be swayed by the power of suggestion. Avoid this scenario, if possible: Taster Person No. 1: sniff sniff, slurp slurp. Oooh, I get a real peachy aroma, guava too, with a wonderful dry finish. Not too sweet. Just right. Delicious. Taster Person No. 2 (who has a cold and just had an oyster omelet for a snack, washed down with an espresso): Meh. I got zero nose worth mentioning. Taste is burnt rubber, chicory, Band Aids and buttered popcorn on the palate. How can you like this train wreck? Taster Person No. 1: second sip. Oh yeah, I totally get that now. Not peaches and delicious tropical fruit at all. Definitely Band Aids, chicory and BUUUUURPopcorn. I’ve giving this one star on Starburrpd!” W

VANCOUVER CRAFT BEER WEEK
Brew kids on the block ROBERT MANGELSDORF @robmangelsdorf
With a new brewery opening seemingly every week in this province, there are no shortage of plucky young brewers striking out on their own. We talked to a trio of upand-coming fermentologists about where they’ve been, where they’re going, and what they’re going to drink when they get there.
Who are you? Mauricio Lozano, operator/founder Faculty Brewing Co. Age: 31 Hometown: Born and raised in Puebla, Mexico, but with mom’s roots from Saint Geroges de Beauce, Quebec. Brewing background: Like a lot of the other brewers in the craft beer scene I share a past in the macro beer world, with Molson-Coors at the Burrard Street Brewery. My brewing fundamentals come from my bachelor’s in food engineering and my master’s in food science. I learned to brew in 2005 at the University of Leeds, UK. How would you describe your personal brewing style? Collaborative and opensource. I disclose my recipes on our website. I am a firm believer that the next great beer will come from a lot of minds coming together and editing a recipe several times until greatness is achieved. What was the first beer you tried that changed the way you thought about beer? Growing up in Mexico, there were only lagers to choose from. My good friendYvan Duez came back from Europe with a six pack of Leffe Blond. That was the beer that changed my perception and opened my appetite to explore the beer world. What’s your favourite BC brewery (other than your own)? This is such a tricky question because I love a lot of them. I am a huge fan of Callister Brewing and the collaborative model they have. What’s your favourite go-to beer at the end of the day? Usually something in the 7 per cent range, over 60 IBUs, dry-hopped and refreshing If you could visit any brewery in the world, what one would it be? Dogfish Head, Delaware, US. I haven’t been there and I am impressed by how they have paved the way for the craft beer industry in North America
Westender.com
Any advice for someone looking to get into home brewing? Your beer quality will keep improving with every batch. Great beers didn’t happen in the first attempt. What do you love most about the BC craft beer scene? How the quality has improved over the years. The variety of styles and the friendliness of the industry. What do you think the BC craft beer scene is missing? BC is missing friendlier bureaucracies and municipalities that allow small breweries in other zonings. It will be ideal to have breweries that can reflect the character of each neighbourhood. For that to happen breweries should be allowed in other areas instead the typical industrial/light industrial zone.
Who are you? Ashley Brooks, head brewer, Big Ridge Brewing Co. Age: 29 Hometown: Lake Cowichan, BC. Brewing background: I was part of the inaugural class in Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Brewing & Brewery Operations program, which I just graduated from this spring. During my time in the program, I was the assistant brewer atYaletown Brewing Co. and Bomber Brewing. What was the first beer you tried that changed the way you thought about beer? First one that really comes to mind is the Red Racer IPA by Central City. I just remember the magnificent hop explosion of grapefruit and pine, I was blown away! Why is being a brewer the best job ever? Because beer! Not only are you rewarded at the end of a hard day with the delicious fruits of your labour but you get to create something that you can share with others, and having someone tell you they enjoy your beer is extremely satisfying work. It feels good to make people happy! What’s your favourite go-to beer at the end of the day? Right now I’ve definitely been into my pineapple wheat ale! The combination of the pineapple with amarillo hops has a delicious fruity aroma with some nice tropical notes. I think it’s a great summertime beer, very refreshing. Look for it at VCBW! What do you love most about the BC craft beer scene? I can’t get over the camara-
derie, how everyone looks out for one another. There’s a lot of respect and love for the craft and everyone you meet in the industry is very passionate. It really is a great community to be apart of.
Who are you? Ryan Parfitt, owner/head brewer, Luppolo Brewing Co. Age: 32 Hometown: Vancouver. Brewing background: Home brewer for 10 years. When did you realize you wanted to become a brewer? Probably after my first trip to Portland, visiting all of the craft breweries down there and seeing everyone hanging out at their local spot enjoying the beers. It was a community-oriented vibe that I wanted as a part of my everyday life. What was the first beer you ever brewed? Strathcona Pale Ale, a recipe from Dan’s Homebrew Supply. It was a partial mash, after that I switched to all grain. What’s your favourite BC brewery (other than your own)? Four Winds produces some of the best beer I’ve had, in terms of hanging out in a tasting room I would say Brassneck or Strange Fellows. What’s your favourite go-to beer at the end of the day? Brassneck Passive Aggressive. If you could visit any brewery in the world, what one would it be? Probably one of the original Trappist breweries in Belgium. There is so much history there and I’d love to see their old-school open fermenters in action. Any advice for someone looking to get into homebrewing? Go all-grain from the start, it takes a little longer but the higher quality product you end up with is well worth the extra time. What do you love most about the BC craft beer scene? The community, everyone that I’ve met in the industry is so nice and welcoming. Everyone just wants to help each other out and grow the craft beer market together. It is the furthest thing from cutthroat you can imagine. What do you think the BC craft beer scene is missing? I’d say there are a few things we’re missing: more women in the industry, more local hop farms and more local maltsters. If we are talking about Vancouver alone, then I would add patios to the list of what we’re missing. W

Welcome to ‘Victory Square’ Leo nominated short salutes the struggles of DTES residents
Sabrina Furminger Reel People
@Sabrinarmf
Jacquie Gould was determined to make a short film about the Downtown Eastside without exploiting the people who live there. It might seem like that should just go without saying, but there’s a long history of productions rolling into the troubled neighborhood and giving little thought to its residents, according to Gould. “I’ve been working in the film business for 28 years, so I’ve shot down there a lot,” says the veteran writer and director in a recent phone interview. “You go in there, and you work, and then you leave.” From the get-go, Gould intended for her narrative short film – Victory Square – to be different: to showcase the humanity of the DTES community, and compel people to look beyond the damaging stereotypes associated with the term “addict.” “We don’t even see them as people anymore,” says Gould. “I want people to
Camille Sullivan and Terry Chen star in writer/director Jacquie Gould’s short film Victory Square. Contributed photo see how easy it is to become that, and how hard it is, once your poor brain is addicted to these drugs, to get out of it.” For Gould, Victory Square’s narrative arc is deeply personal. Her grandfather died from an opium overdose. Her niece, Ashley, is currently fighting her own battle with addiction in the DTES. It was because of Ashley that Gould ended up cast-
ing her lens on the DTES in the first place. When her niece went missing three years ago, Gould reached out to a group of police officers she knew who worked with troubled youth in the area. The officers helped Gould locate Ashley, and opened Gould’s eyes to the realities of life in the DTES: homelessness, addiction, mental illness, gentrification, kindness, and community spirit. Thus, Victory Square was born. The short follows a newbie officer (portrayed by Camille Sullivan) whose rotation takes her to the DTES. Terry Chen (Strange Empire; Continuum) plays a plainclothes officer with years of experience working in the turbulent community.
David Cubitt and Maddie Phillips portray residents whose paths intersect with the two cops; Gould’s niece was the inspiration for Phillips’ character. Everyone else you see in Victory Square is a DTES resident. Gould credits DTES resident and photographer Donovan Mahoney for liaising with the community and shooting “real footage of real people with real respect.” “We didn’t want to go in and shove cameras in people’s faces, because to me that would be so disrespectful,” says Gould. Instead, Mahoney – a yoga teacher and prolific Instagrammer whose images have been featured on Huffington Post – asked “every single person, ‘Can I
take your picture? We want to put it in a movie,’ and all they asked for was either a cigarette or a toonie,” says Gould. “Really, all they want is respect. They want people to look them in the eyes and see them as a human being.” Gould and co. filmed the majority of Victory Square in an alleyway and a rooftop. Amazingly, they spent only a handful of hours in the titular square. “In Victory Square, we actually started at 6am, and we only got 13 takes, and it was never quite perfect, but then we had to stop because we were in [the residents’] way, and they were telling us to ‘fuck off,’ and we said, ‘Sure, we’re totally getting out of your way,’” says Gould. “It was
REVIEW // X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac Directed by Bryan Singer Picking up where 2014’s Days of Future Past left off, the ninth installment (including this year’s Deadpool) in the successful X-Men film series boasts the usual eye-popping action and dramatic heft but also exposes several cracks in the otherwise polished franchise. The setting this time around is the ‘80s as the world’s first mutant supervillain En Sabah Nur (Isaac), commonly referred to as Apocalypse, is miraculously revived in Egypt and quickly gets up

to speed on current events. Meanwhile, Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is still brooding while trying to raise a family in Poland and the good guys are still hanging with Professor X (James McAvoy). Soon enough, all hell breaks loose as Apocalypse
recruits Magneto and several other mutants to destroy the planet… or something. It’s actually a bit unclear what the villain’s motivations are and that is just one of the problems with the story. The supremely talented Isaac is wasted in the ge-
that balance of getting what we needed but also respecting that this is their space. We scheduled it that way. We knew we had to work around these issues.” Victory Square scooped up seven nominations for 2016 Leo Awards, including Best Short Drama, Best Direction for Gould, and Best Performance nods for Chen and Sullivan (the latter of whom is also nominated for Best Performance by a Female in a Motion Picture for The Birdwatcher). Gould is currently developing Victory Square for television. “I want to make Canadian television shows,” says Gould, whose extensive list of credits includes the critically-acclaimed Strange Empire, Smallville, Godiva’s, Snow Falling on Cedars, and Alive. “My goal is to shoot and work here and hire everyone that I’ve ever worked with. We have such a vast resource of stories, and I want Vancouver to start playing Vancouver for Vancouver.” As for Victory Square, she’d like its audiences to ruminate on the thin line that separates a mythical “us” from a mythical “them.” “Anything could happen to any one of us that just makes us unable to cope in life, and you go from having a few drinks a day to a little bit of a prescription drug habit to all of a sudden, your whole life is out of control,” says Gould. neric role while the film’s familiar plot is stale and, despite the threat of absolute destruction, feels oddly inconsequential. It also becomes frustrating watching Magneto waver between good and evil once again. Even Jennifer Lawrence seems bored in her role as the shapeshifting Mystique. X-Men:Apocalypse certainly looks great and has no shortage of intriguing character interplay. Once again, a scenestealing Quicksilver (Evan Peters) is given a classic sequence set to an iconic song. Yet, it all doesn’t seem like enough as the movie’s scattershot storytelling and tiresome tropes put the franchise in need of some innovation. –Thor Diakow

HEALTH
Our buzz love for coffee Patty Javier Gomez Whole Nourishment
@WholeNourishBC A lot of people are addicted to caffeine – more specifically coffee. They can’t go on with their daily activities (including the first morning movement of the bowels) without that hit of sweet, over-priced caffeinated joe from their favorite coffee shop. Conveniently for everyone, there is one at almost every corner to make your daily addiction more accessible. Coffee shops are basically the drug pushers of the morning commute. Coffee came on the scene about a thousand years ago when the coffee plant was first discovered in Ethiopia, and was thought to have medicinal properties. Just like many things discovered early on in human history, coffee is no exception to mystical legend and folklore. It is said coffee was originally discovered by a goat herder named Kaldi. He found his goats frolicking, as goats often do, and noticed that they were full of energy after eating the red fruit of the coffee shrub. Kaldi then decided to try the fruit himself and had a similar reaction. After a monk witnessed their strange behavior, he decided to take some of
the fruit back to his fellow monks; they all spent the night awake and alert. They were of course reacting to the high dose of caffeine, which is not only a stimulant for humans, but also acts as a natural pesticide to protect the coffee fruit from insects. Mother Nature can sure be smart sometimes. It wasn’t until the 13th century that humans started roasting coffee beans. Prior to that the fruits would be mashed into a pulp and fermented into a wine-like beverage. A concoction made from boiling the leaves of the plant was enjoyed by many and made its way around the world, being cultivated in Yemen by the 14th century and eventually making its way to the Americas. The world’s most expensive coffee, called Kopi Luwak, can go for up to $600 per pound. That’s because it’s beans are eaten and then excreted by a Sumatran wild cat. Just think, it’s someone’s job to dig through cat poop for partially digested coffee beans, just so folks can drink some overpriced, shitty coffee. Today, most of the world’s coffee is produced in Colombia and Brazil, which isn’t too surprising considering the plant’s preference for tropical climates. Coffee is the second most valuable, legally-traded substance
in the world (the first one being oil). While the price of your daily cup of coffee might only be a few bucks, the human cost is much higher as often coffee is grown and harvested under essentially modern-day slavery conditions. Many farmers are paid an unfairly low wage, workers are subjected to harsh conditions and long hours. Enter the fair trade movement. According to Fairtrade.ca: “With Fairtrade, certified coffee producer organisations are guaranteed to receive at least the Fairtrade Minimum Price for their coffee, which aims to cover their costs of production and act as a safety net when market prices fall below a sustainable level.” So if you are going to drink coffee, choose fair trade and local whenever possible. There is much to say about the health effects of coffee, both for and against. There have been studies done suggesting coffee may improve your overall life and make you live longer. But before you brew your next cup, something to consider is that coffee has also been shown to irritate your digestive system, urinary tract and prostate, and too much caffeine can make you anxious and jittery. As with so many things in life, moderation is key, my friends. W

SEX
Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny The voices in our heads are our constant companions. They fill our inner sanctuary with streams of manic commentary. Often we’re not fully cognizant of the bedlam, since the outer world dominates our focus. But as soon as we close our eyes and turn our attention inward, we’re immersed in the jabbering babble. That’s the bad news, Aries. Now here’s the good news. In the coming weeks you will have far more power than usual to ignore, dodge, or even tamp down the jabbering babble. As a result, you may get a chance to spend unprecedented amounts of quality time with the still, small voice at your core – the wise guide that is often drowned out by all the noise.
We are inclined to believe that the best way to see the whole picture or the complete story is from above. The eagle that soars overhead can survey a vast terrain in one long gaze. The mountaintop perspective affords a sweeping look at a vast landscape. But sometimes this perspective isn’t perfectly useful. What we most need to see may be right next to us, or nearby, and it’s only visible if our vision is narrowly focused. Here’s how poet Charles Bernstein expresses it: “What’s missing from the bird’s eye view is plain to see on the ground.” Use this clue in the coming weeks.
I foresee fertile chaos in your immediate future, Gemini. I predict lucky accidents and smoldering lucidity and disciplined spontaneity. Do you catch the spirit of what I’m suggesting? Your experiences will not be describable by tidy theories. Your intentions will not fit into neat categories. You will be a vivid embodiment of sweet paradoxes and crazy wisdom and confusing clarity. Simple souls may try to tone you down, but I hope you will evade their pressure as you explore the elegant contradictions you encounter. Love your life exactly as it is! Methodical improvisations will be your specialty. Giving gifts that are both selfish and unselfish will be one of your best tricks. “Healing extremes” will be your code phrase of power.
According to many sources on the Internet, “werifesteria” is an obscure word from Old English. But my research suggests it was in fact dreamed up within the last few years by a playful hoaxster. Regardless of its origins, I think it’s an apt prescription to fix what’s bugging you. Here’s the definition: “to wander longingly through the forest in search of mystery and adventure.” If you are not currently seeking out at least a metaphorical version of that state, I think you should be. Now is an excellent time to reap the catalytic benefits of being willingly lost in a wild, idyllic, relaxing setting.
I’m debating about which of your astrological houses will be your featured hotspot in the coming days. I’m guessing it will come down to two options: your House of Valid Greed and your House of Obligatory Sharing. The House of Valid Greed has a good chance to predominate, with its lush feasts and its expansive moods. But the House of Obligatory Sharing has an austere beauty that makes it a strong possibility, as well. Now here’s the trick ending, Leo: I’d like to see if you can emphasize both houses equally; I hope you’ll try to inhabit them both at the same time. Together they will grant you a power that neither could bestow alone.
Between now and July 25, there’s a chance you will reach the peak of a seemingly unclimbable mountain. You could win a privilege that neither you nor anyone else ever dreamed was within your reach. It’s possible you’ll achieve a milestone you’ve been secretly preparing for since childhood. Think I’m exaggerating, Virgo? I’m not. You could break a record for the biggest or best or fastest, or you might finally sneak past an obstacle that has cast a shadow over your self-image for years. And even if none of these exact events comes to pass, the odds are excellent that you will accomplish another unlikely or monumental feat. Congratulations in advance!
“My mother gave birth to me once, yeah yeah yeah,” writes author Sara Levine. “But I’ve redone myself a million times.” I’m sure she is not demeaning her mom’s hard work, but rather celebrating her own. When’s the last time you gave birth to a fresh version of yourself? From where I stand, it looks like the next 12 to 15 months will be one of those fertile phases of reinvention. And right now is an excellent time to get a lightning-flash glimpse of what the New You might look like.
Author Rebecca Solnit offers some tough advice that I think you could use. “Pain serves a purpose,” she says. “Without it you are in danger. What you cannot feel you cannot take care of.” With that in mind, Scorpio, I urge you to take full advantage of the suffering you’re experiencing. Treat it as a gift that will motivate you to transform the situation that’s causing you to hurt. Honor it as a blessing you can use to rise above the mediocre or abusive circumstances you have been tolerating.
Aphorist James Guida contemplates the good results that can come from not imposing expectations on the raw reality that’s on its way. “Not to count chickens before they’re hatched,” he muses, “or eggs before they’re laid, chickens who might possibly lay eggs, birds who from afar might be confused with chickens.” I recommend this strategy for you in the coming weeks, Sagittarius. Experiment with the pleasure of being wide open to surprises. Cultivate a mood of welcoming one-ofa-kind people, things, and events. Be so empty you have ample room to accommodate an influx of new dispensations. As James Guida concludes: “Not to count or think of chickens.”
“No gift is ever exactly right for me,” mourns Capricorn poet James Richardson. Don’t you dare be like him in the coming days. Do whatever you must to ensure that you receive at least one gift that’s exactly right for you. Two gifts would be better; three sublime. Here’s another thought from Richardson: “Success repeats itself until it is a failure.” Don’t you dare illustrate that theory. Either instigate changes in the way you’ve been achieving success, or else initiate an entirely new way. Here’s one more tip from Richardson: “Those who demand consideration for their sacrifices were making investments, not sacrifices.” Don’t you dare be guilty of that sin. Make sacrifices, not investments. If you do, your sacrifices will ultimately turn out to be good investments.
Sex with Mish Way
@MyszkaWay
I’m in England right now. As I type this, I am sitting in the back of my tour van driving from Birmingham to Leeds. The British love a celebrity sex scandal almost as much as they love to get black-out drunk at 6pm on lukewarm lager. Only in a British tabloid would you see the word “PEDO” printed in the big, block letters of a headline. The adultery scandal is the crème de la crème of tabloid scandals, and even us Canadians can get behind our British brothers on that one, especially when the reason the adulterer got caught was totally stupid. We LOVE celebrity adultery! “They are JUST like us! They grocery shop! They get wasted and cheat on their spouses!” Enter the Hall of Fame.
GAVIN ROSSDALE
Every guy hates Bush’s Gavin Rossdale because he is married to pop superstar Gwen Stefani and every girl loves him for the same reason. Sorry, was married to Gwen Stefani until he got busted having an affair with the couple’s live-in nanny. Apparently, Rossdale had been sleeping with the couple’s Australian nanny for years, throughout the birth of their second child (gossip even claims he allegedly left the hospital right after Stefani gave birth to go fuck the nanny). Rossdale got caught last year when he forgot that his iPhone was synced to the family iPad and his young son saw naked photos and sexts that the nanny had sent to Rossdale. Seriously. How hard is it to disconnect your iPhone? Isn’t that Adultery 101?
Ozzy Osbourne cheated on his wife Sharon with his hairdresser. money from the frontman.) Gallagher is no stranger to adultery, he has had many publicized affairs with journalists over his career, but adding an alleged step-kid to the mix was grounds for divorce. Have fun with your inevitable father complex in 20 years, baby Gemma!
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
The housekeeper is living life forever attached to this story.
OZZY OSBOURNE
The Terminator and former governor of my fair state of California once had an affair with the family housekeeper, Mildred Baena. It’s alleged that Maria Shriver walked in on him going down on another woman and his defense was, “Eating isn’t cheating.” The affair with Baena was heard round the world when their lovechild was born. The boy, Christopher, is now 17 years old (a spitting image of his father), and Arnold recently told Howard Stern that even though it’s tough for all the children in the family, the kids try to get along and understand. Shriver and Arnold tried couples counseling which was a “waste of time” and now they are separated.
Recently, Ozzy Osbourne had a long-running affair celebrity hairdresser Michelle Pugh, almost three decades younger than him. His wife of 34 years, Sharon Osbourne, found out by searching the fossil’s emails. When news broke to the rest of the family (and the public), his daughter Kelly Osbourne took to Twitter to call out Pugh writing, “Anyone looking for cheap chunky LOW-lights a blow out and a blow job call +13239282323 [sic]” And when the inevitable sea of talking Twitter heads responded to her low blow, Kelly shot back. “Are you in my family? NO YOU ARE NOTYOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT SHE DID! So keep yr high-mighty opinions to yourself!” “My father is almost 70 ever heard of elder abuse? [sic]” W

LIAM GALLAGHER
Life will invite you to explore the archetype of the Ethical Interloper in the coming days. The archetype of the Helpful Transgressor may tempt you, as well, and even the Congenial Meddler or the Compassionate Trickster might look appealing. I urge you to consider experimenting with all of these. It will probably be both fun and productive to break taboos in friendly ways. You could reconnoiter forbidden areas without freaking anyone out or causing a troublesome ruckus. If you’re sufficiently polite and kind in expressing your subversive intentions, you might leave a trail of good deeds in your wake.
Your theme comes from the title of a poem by Fortesa Latifi: “I Am Still Learning How to Do the Easy Things.” During the next phase of your astrological cycle, I invite you to specialize in this study. You may imagine that you are already a master of the simple, obvious arts of life, but here’s the news: Few of us are. And the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to refine your practice. Here’s a good place to start: Eat when you’re hungry, sleep when you’re tired, and give love when you’re lonely.

Celebrity adultery hall of fame
Oasis frontman and notorious British asshole, Liam Gallagher, recently divorced from his wife, Nicole Applegate, when a New York Times journalist claimed Gallagher was the father of the journalist’s newborn baby. Liza Ghorbani wrote a feature story on the rockstar while he was visiting New York, and they had an affair. (He pulled out, right? That works 90 per cent of the time.) Gallagher washed his hands (and dick) clean and flew back to England. Nine months later, Ghorbani began saying he is the father of her baby and demanding financial compensation for the little tot. Gossip rags showed photos of her parading baby Gemma around Manhattan in a stroller accompanied by gold digger headlines. (She most recently pulled out of the settlement deal to demand even more
