Re:“Anthem change and empty gesture,” Sex with Mish Way, June 16, 2016. I realize that Mish Way’s column is not meant to be factual news, but rather an opinion piece. Still, she should be more careful with the accuracy of her facts before attempting to use them to bolster those opinions. There were various English language versions of the Canadian national anthem and indeed Weir’s version, first published in 1908, became the most widely used. However revisions were made (or as Way would have it, it was “tampered with”) in 1913, 1914, and 1916. In fact the line “True patriot love thou dost in us command” was in the original 1908 version that she so wants us to respect. It was in the 1913 “tampering” that it was changed to “True patriot love in all thy sons command.” The proposed change would hardly “destroy history” but rather bring it closer to Weir’s original. As for political correctness, it has become politically correct to rail against it, and I, for one, am weary of it. Political correctness was intended to try to ensure that our society was inclusive and respectful of everyone. Admirable attributes that society should strive for. Indeed, it went off the rails from time to time with some questionable and even bizarre results, but over time those situations have become rare. I fully support Way’s call for the federal government to take real action against violence and discrimination especially against women and transgendered Canadians. I just wish she had spent more time addressing that as opposed to taking an opportunity to throw praise at the Conservatives or repeating right-wing propaganda about the spending of “taxpayer’s money.” –Sandy Bauer

YOUR CITY Pinball, Chinese menus, and road kill: Vancouver collections on display Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence
Most human beings have packrat instincts. It starts in childhood. Think back to hockey cards, Matchbox cars, and comic books. There’s a reason the toy companies urged us to collect the whole set, because we had to have them all. Some people grow out of it, whereas others never tire of that thrill of the hunt. Collecting becomes a passion, an expression of character, and even a livelihood. The positive side of the accumulation of stuff is on display at the Museum ofVancouver this summer, in an exhibit titled AllTogether Now.The show launches thisThursday (June 23) and runs right through to January 2017. Viviane Gosselin, the museum’s Curator of Contemporary Culture, handpicked 20 of Greater Vancouver’s most fascinating hunters and gatherers. “We work with collectors all the time”, says Gosselin. “We borrow objects from them and seek their knowledge on certain subjects. In this exhibit, we wanted to focus on the act of collecting, and feature the collectors themselves, who are usually anonymous.” The collections on display range from jukeboxes to pocket watches to glass eyes to gig posters to taxidermy of Vancouver-area rodents and birds. That’s right, Gabrielle Whiteley is a self-taught taxidermist, which sounds messy, but apparently isn’t. All of her animals are “ethicallysourced” in that she doesn’t actually kill anything.
Kyle Seller with his pinball macines. Rebecca Blissett photo Imogene Lim, another collector on display, has amassed a huge amount of Chinese restaurant menus. Yes, menus. It all started when her uncle, who was part of the family restaurant, wanted to see what the competition was up to, so he grabbed every Chinese restaurant menu he could find to compare. Lim became fascinated with the cultural stories the menus told through food offerings, design and pricing, and picked up the practice her uncle started. Some of the menus will be on display. Also exhibited will be action figures, fly fishing lures, BC transit artifacts, prosthetics (?!), and hundreds of items from Maurice Guibord’s Expo 67 collection, among various other stuff. Most of the displays will feature a hands-on aspect, none more so than Kyle Seller’s vintage pinball machines. Seller got hooked on pinball as a teenager, hanging out at his local arcade in Coquitlam. Many years later, he’s turned that love into a viable business. He’s the pinball king of Vancouver, and is mostly responsible for the huge upswing of popularity for pinball in this town. Seller has actually lost count of just how many pinball ma-
chines are in his collection, but you can find various examples at Landyachtz, Pub 340, What’s Up? Hot Dog!, 12 Kings Pub, and the River Market in New Westminster. He admits he’s somewhat mystified at having part of his hard-earned and much loved collection on display at an institution like the Museum of Vancouver. “It’s really bizarre, but extremely satisfying,” states Seller. “I think it’s something I’ll think about for the rest of my life. Never in a million years did I ever think my love of pinball would be recognized by a museum. It’s really cool.” All Together Now took a year and a half to assemble. Gosselin calls the exhibit “the intersection of many goals. This is a portrait of 20 collectors each with their own cabinet of wonders.” Gosselin says that despite the wildly different artifacts on display, the collectors all have one thing in common. “Passion. They’re all extremely passionate about what they do. These are the experts in their field, and it shows”. The Museum of Vancouver hopes to amass a large collection of your admission stubs to All Together Now all summer long. W
CITY SHORTS // CITY TO MOVE FORWARD WITH EMPTY HOME TAX
The City of Vancouver is giving the provincial government until Aug. 1 to signal it’s willing to collaborate on an empty home tax before the city moves forward to implement one on its own. Mayor Gregor Robertson made the announcement at a press conference in Coal Harbour Wednesday morning. “Today, I’m confirming that the city will take action on taxing empty homes with or without the help of the BC government,” he said. “Ideally, it’s with the support of the BC government.” Last year, Robertson pointed out, housing prices surged by 37 per cent while the rental vacancy rate is near zero. A report going before council next week outlines the options for the tax. The preferred option would see the province create and administer a new “residential vacant” property tax through BC Assessment. Data from the assessment roll would be used to levy the tax on empty or under-occupied properties. The alternative would see the city establish and charge a new business tax on empty and underoccupied homes that are held as investment properties and not rented to local residents. Robertson said the tax proceeds would go toward funding affordable housing initiatives. He noted the second option would create significant additional administration and enforce-

12 VANCOUVER SCHOOLS ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK
The Vancouver School Board has released a list of 12 schools that will be considered for closure as part of the first stage of its school closure process. The preliminary list is made up of four annexes, six elementary schools and two secondary schools. They are Champlain Heights Annex, Tecumseh Annex, McBride Annex, Queen Elizabeth Annex, Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary, Admiral Seymour Elementary, Graham D. Bruce Elementary, Sir Guy Carleton Elementary, Queen Alexandra Elementary, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary, Britannia Secondary and Gladstone Secondary. Queen Elizabeth Annex is the only school consid-
ered for closure on the West Side. If all 12 schools are approved for closure, the VSB will save about $8.2 million per year. VSB chairman Mike Lombardi stressed at a Monday afternoon press conference that no decision to close any schools has been made. VSB facilities need to meet a 95 per cent capacity target set by the province before seismic upgrades can be approved. The VSB has completed 20 seismic upgrades, is currently working on five and has 61 schools in the district that still need upgrades. In 2010, the VSB considered shutting down five East Side schools – Champlain Heights annex, Sir Richard McBride annex, Sir Guy Carleton, Queen Alexandra and Sir William Macdonald elementary schools. The school communities launched campaigns to save the schools. The trustees of the day opted not to close any of them. –Bianca Chan,Vancouver Courier
South Australia sets an example for the country and the world David Suzuki Science Matters @DavidSuzuki
First-time visitors to Australia are often drawn to the big city attractions of Sydney and Melbourne or the fabulous beaches of Queensland’s Gold Coast. I’ve always had a soft spot for Adelaide in South Australia, a city built more on a human scale, where downtown can be easily navigated on bike, foot or tram. For me, Adelaide’s greatest attraction is a huge market right in the city’s centre. When I first visited Adelaide in 1993, I met Mike Rann, a young, charismatic aboriginal affairs minister in South Australia’s Labor government. His party lost the election that year, but Rann later became party
leader and then state premier in a minority government in 2002. I met him again in 2003 when he outlined ambitious plans to address climate change by aggressively moving South Australia into renewable energy. Wind and solar were the obvious opportunities, but he was also enthusiastic about “hot rocks”, superheated pockets that could create steam to drive turbines for electricity. Rann proudly introduced me to theYouth Conservation Corps.Young people in this program are trained to restore land overgrazed by sheep or cattle, plant trees and make wildlife inventories. Rann surprised me by dedicating 45 hectares of reforestation land as Suzuki Forest. I met young people working on “my” forest who enthusiastically told me about the number and variety of birds they’d

seen that day, described plant species and talked about how many trees they had planted. Many were street kids, inspired by the chance to learn about nature and conservation and proud to be re-greening the area. I was impressed by their passion and eagerness. They believed in what they were doing and it provided a small income to get them off the streets. My Adelaide visit that year ended at the World of Music and Dance festival, or WOMAD, a marvelous annual event where I heard the late Richie Havens sing his famous song “Freedom”.To top it off, I met Uncle Lewis O’Brien, a Kaurna elder who honoured me with the name Kaurna Mayu (mountain of a man). I kept in touch with Mike Rann over the years. He was re-elected with majority governments in 2006 and 2010,
then resigned in 2011. Last March, I returned as a guest of WOMADelaide. Although Rann was in Italy where he is now Australia’s ambassador, his wife Sasha welcomed me back. Again, the festival was a wonderful gathering of local and visiting musicians and dancers (including two groups from Canada), and to my delight, Uncle Lewis is alive and welcomed us to his country. In Adelaide, I met Ian Hunter, South Australia’s environment minister, who boasted of his state’s tremendous progress in renewable energy. South Australia gets 40 per cent of its electricity from solar and wind and hopes to reach 50 to 60 per cent within a few years. The area is blessed with abundant sunlight, but few jurisdictions have committed to solar as aggressively and successfully as South
Australia. From my hotel room, I looked down on a factory roof covered in rows of solar panels, which are now mounted on one of every four houses. I also returned to Suzuki Forest. I was delighted and amazed at the variety and size of plants and trees, and the birds that now flourish among them. Perhaps my forest has been protected by neighbouring Schwarzenegger Forest! Despite the impressive work in South Australia, most of the country is caught between the terrible reality of climate change – droughts, massive fires and dying reefs – and continued pressure to serve the economy by relying on fossil fuels, including recently approving the world’s largest coal mine. Australia’s centre-right Liberal government under Prime Minister Tony Abbott
gutted the previous government’s actions on climate change, disbanding the Climate Commission headed by world-renowned climate expert Tim Flannery in 2013 and cancelling Australia’s modest carbon price in 2014. Fortunately, the public started funding Flannery’s work, and the commission was reborn as the independent Climate Council. Abbott was booted by his own party after a short reign. Nevertheless, the country — like much of the world — is in the throes of deciding whether to act seriously to reduce the threat of climate change. South Australia shows that many opportunities exist to do so. David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and cofounder of the David Suzuki Foundation. Learn more at DavidSuzuki.org. W

every-day breakfast is still something fairly rare in Vancouver, which, in part, explains the enormous popularity of places like Medina and Yolks (their excellent nosh is definitely the main culprit). Jam Café is fated to join the ranks of these two institutions, thanks to its rich and riotously unrepentant take on classic breakfast fare. Take the pulled pork pancakes ($16). This is a dish that has been done to death, so what could possibly make Jam’s version stand out? The pork, for one. It’s perfectly cooked and juicy, and the maple barbecue glaze is light and smoky, without any of the sickly sweetness that seems to be the standard. I would suggest the half portion Provence Marinaside has expanded on its “Tappy Hour” and “Wine Wednesdays” programs with the addition of live music from the Hip Pocket Quartet every Wednesday, 4:30pm-7:30pm. Two massive slabs of what a friend called “big, fluffy pancake Frisbees” are topped by what looks like a pound of pork and a healthy mound of lightly pickled cabbage and carrots. Sweet, tart, savoury… it hits all the right notes. If your sweet tooth is stronger than mine, red velvet pancakes drizzled with cream cheese icing ($14) might get you going. Being a fan of savoury in the morning, I gravitated toward the massive Charlie bowl ($15). This epic take on a classic hash is crumbled biscuit (made in-house), ham, cheese, green onion, hashbrowns and cheddar, all topped with housemade sausage gravy and two eggs, sunny
side up and perfectly runny. Break the yolks and spread the love around. The hashbrowns made another appearance siding the buttermilk biscuit sandwich ($11). The biscuit is dense but not dry, and the tomato jam is excellent. Those hashbrowns were undercooked however. Served latke-style, the exterior was nicely browned and crispy, but inside it was sadly pale and flavourless. We had the same experience with the gravy coupe ($15). Another excellent biscuit topped with flavourful fried chicken, sausage gravy and two runny eggs was marred by the lacklustre potato pancake. Much better was the Reuben ($14). Yes, Jam has some lunch items as well.

CRAFT BEER
Has Victoria’s beer scene lost its edge?
JAN ZESCHKY @thegrowlerbc
It’s the city of newlyweds, nearly-deads and die-hard hopheads.Victoria has laid claim to BC’s craft beer throne ever since Spinnakers opened as Canada’s first brewpub with on-site brewing in 1984 and it’s given the city a cutting edge to slice through those musty stereotypes. But a kind of malaise now seems to be creeping over its
beer scene as well. At least, that’s the impression when compared to what’s happening on the other side of the Salish Sea, where breweries are sprouting like crazy across the Lower Mainland. Fuelled by the BC government’s introduction of the brewery lounge endorsement in 2013,Vancouver and its suburbs all the way east to Abbotsford have seen upwards of 30 new openings. The City of Vancouver alone
has doubled its number of breweries to two-dozen over the past three years. That’s twice the number currently operating in Greater Victoria, which, over the same period, saw just two breweries open. What’s particularly conspicuous is that Greater Victoria doesn’t yet have a single brewery lounge, which has been such a principal cause of growth in breweries across the province. So, has BC’s grand old
dame had her fill of beer? Well, the fact is that the provincial capital still aces Vancouver when it comes to number of breweries per capita: there’s roughly 1 per 9,800 people compared to Vancouver’s 1 per 26,000 (in Greater Victoria it’s around 1 per 29,000; in Metro Vancouver 1 per 48,100; all using 2011 census figures). So Vancouver has actually been catching up over the past three years. If anything, the

Jonny Healy photo numbers suggest there’s still plenty of room for more breweries in the Lower Mainland. Conversely, there’s likely less appetite for start-ups in brewery-dense Victoria. “I wouldn’t say we’re saturated, but there’s probably a little more hesitation to come into the market,” says Matt Phillips, owner of Phillips Brewing Company on Victoria’s Government Street. Victoria’s more sustainable pace of growth since the mid-1980s has seen it become home to many of the province’s veteran craft breweries, several of whom – led by Phillips – have consequently become among BC’s biggest. This partly explains why they don’t have lounges: Firstly, because the floor plans of the likes of Phillips, Driftwood Brewery, Lighthouse Brewing Co. and the recently sold Vancouver Island Brewery were drawn up well before the lounge concept was introduced; and secondly, having kept pace with demand by continuously expanding, these breweries have simply run out of space in which to set up a dedicated lounge. “We’re all shoehorned into these spaces that made sense to us in terms of production under the regulatory model at the time,” Phillips says. “None of us took space we didn’t need and so, as a result, none of us have space to use.” Yes, you can fill your growler at these breweries, but their tasting rooms are functional nooks that would be challenging and expensive to transform into cost-effective service areas. For Phillips to create a viable tasting lounge, “I’d have to move my brewhouse and a bunch of fermenters,” says Phillips. “It’s pretty daunting.
I guess it’s whether we make beer or seats for people to drink it.” However, what Victoria lacks in brewery lounges, it more than makes up for with brewpubs. The central locations of veterans Spinnakers, Swans and Canoe have undoubtedly been part of their success over the years – but the fact they’ve recently been joined by brewpubs in outlying areas (Rock Bay’s Moon Under Water in 2011,View Royal’s Four Mile in 2014 and Langford’s Axe & Barrel in April) indicates that there’s something more appealing about the brewpub model in Victoria. It’s only natural, considering Victoria’s British roots and penchant for cozy neighbourhood pubs. Vancouver and its suburbs, on the other hand, have lacked the same concentration of these kinds of establishments. Brewery tasting lounges are now arguably filling this niche with their casual atmosphere and welcoming community feel. But let’s take a step back. Instead of aiming to replicate Vancouver’s brewery model in Victoria, perhaps we should just celebrate the difference between the cities’ respective beer scenes:Vancouver’s vibrant, modern brewery lounges and Victoria’s cosier, more traditional brewpubs and neighbourhood pubs.Variety is a cornerstone of craft beer, after all. In any case, the tasting room, brewery lounge and brewpub are just slightly different points on the same spectrum, according to Phillips. “I always argue that we have tasting rooms, they’re just called brewpubs here,” he says. Think pink: A rosé roundup Michaela Morris By the Bottle @MichaelaWine
As I write this, the rain is beating down on the roof. Why am I so darn cheerful? I’ve got a glass of rosé nearby, of course. Rain or shine ‘tis the season to drink pink. There is no guarantee of good weather in Vancouver but you can be sure that summertime promises an onslaught of the latest rosé releases. Like many of my colleagues, I actually encourage rosé consumption year round. Perhaps it’s my sunny disposition but it seems like we are no longer alone. Surely anticipation has started earlier in the year. On a particularly balmy day in April, I was bombarded by friends asking if the new vintages of rosé had arrived yet. By now the shelves are teeming with them. Particularly noticeable is the welcome invasion from Provence. For me, these are the epitome of rosé with their pale hue, delicate flavours (that are usually uncomplicated by oak), moderate alcohol and dryness on the
palate. These wines have become so popular, stock barely lasts until the end of summer. (You have been warned.) Outside Provence, styles are less uniform than these very distinct pinks. You’ll find a range of sweetness, alcohol and weight along with plenty made sparkling. I look to Spain and Italy for unique examples made from intriguing native grapes. I’ve also been sampling my way though our local wares as BC wineries have been surreptitiously releasing a bevy of rosés over the past few months. All in the name of science, right? Here’s to a very rosy summer. V[X< CYO50T >= 'SWY2 " )N5=2 @=QL=TY #D " &X:M44K '$ F5QLSP ,NSP=O Spain is a savvy source for charismatic fruity rosé. Here the local Bobal grape demonstrates just that with red currant, rosewater, strawberry and character-aplenty. made from the indigenous Bombino Nero grape. It clocks in at a refreshingly moderate 12 per cent and provides a satisfying mouthful of red cherry, blood orange and citrus blossom. Wafts of raspberry and orange zest with juicy peach and mineral on the palate leading to a dry tangy finish. Whip up a garlicky aioli with a pile of chopped veggies for dipping. Juicy and textured without being heavy. I test drove it with salmon and sautéed scapes and was in summer dining heaven. W Prices are exclusive of taxes.

Vocal supergroup hits the right note k.d. lang, Neko Case and Laura Veirs find creativity in struggle ALEX HUDSON @chippedhip
When k.d. lang phones Westender to discuss her new collaborative LP with fellow songwriters Neko Case and Laura Veirs, the Edmontonborn singer’s excitement about the album is palpable. “I have way more enthusiasm for this record than I do for my own [solo albums],” she gushes. “I’ve been tweeting about it and doing all sorts of press for it, ungrudgingly. I’m really into it.” The fact that lang is eager
to do interviews for this latest endeavour works out nicely for this conversation, since she is affable and talkative when discussing the origins of the collaboration. It all began, she says, when she relocated to Portland after having previously lived in Los Angeles. “I moved there in 2012 and met Laura, and then I met Neko around the same time,” she explains. “One night I just thought, ‘Oh, that would be an interesting collaboration.’ So I wrote them an email and got a response from both of them with the thumbs up in about half an hour.” Although it only took around 30 minutes for the trio to agree to the project, it took them a few years to assemble the 14 tracks that appear on the self-titled case/
lang/veirs. The sessions began with lang and Veirs hammering out ideas as a duo, and Case joined later in the process by flying out from her home base in Vermont. These meetings proved to be both fruitful and challenging. “We’re still three individual artists with very strong opinions and ideas of how things should go,” lang acknowledges. “It’s a straight-up democracy, three ways. As you can imagine, it’s difficult.” Given that the musicians are well-established as solo artists, adjusting to a group dynamic inevitably led to some artistic clashes. “We did have our share of them. It was an ego-adjuster to say the least,” lang admits with a chuckle. Once the material was

finished, the three women called up producer Tucker Martine — who had separately worked with both Veirs and Case in the past — and captured the album in a whirlwind five-day studio session. (A few overdubs were completed after.) The results are both lush and intimate, as ornate pop anthems are interspersed with aching minor-key folk dirges. The album is cohesive, and yet the participants’ individual personalities still shine through: lang’s powerful vocals are smooth and sultry on the oldiesstyle ballad “Honey and Smoke,” while the Case-sung “Delirium” is toe-tapping alt-country with a flavour of rock urgency, and Veirs’ perky “Best Kept Secret” is laden in AM pop harmonies
and lavish string flourishes. The singers’ chemistry is highlighted by the moody opener, “Atomic Number,” on which they trade off on lead vocals before coming together in gorgeous harmony. After the rewarding struggles of the drawn-out writing process, lang remembers the time in the studio as being richly productive. “It went down so fast and so beautifully, it was really quite astonishing,” she marvels. “I don’t know — it was a dream record, really.” With the album available now, case/lang/veirs are hitting the road for a North American tour that will come to the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival on June 29. Fans should take advantage of this opportunity to see the trio, since they’re
unlikely to team up again. When asked about the possibility of a second collaborative album, lang says that it will only happen under one specific circumstance. “If we win seven Grammys then we will make another record. That’s probably the only way that it’s going to happen,” she says, laughing jovially. “Six and a half wouldn’t even work. It has to be a full seven. Eight, we don’t need to think about it anymore. We can retire.” W case/lang/veirs Vocal supergroup performs June 29 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre with special guest Andy Shauf. Tickets from $79 at CoastalJazz.ca.

Jazz Fest highlights STAFF WRITER @westendervan
This year marks the 31st edition of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, and as Vancouver’s largest and most diverse music festival enters its fourth decade, its organizers have once again gone above and beyond to bring the best musical talent in the world to our fair shores. Here’s some of the highlights of this year’s festival you’re not going to want to miss.
MS. LAURYN HILL
Lauryn Hill’s performance chops are as guaranteed as her unpredictability. The woman behind the Fugees and the Grammy Awardwinning 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a tour de force of jazz, soul and R&B, who also happens to arrive hours late for the occasional show, esoteric excuses in tow. Meanwhile, Detroit export Khari Wendell McClelland (who made his name with gospel power group the Soujourners) and his band, the Unsung Heroes, are sure to add some

Jaime Callica’s new moves Vancouver actor survives car crash and finds ‘Wayward Pines’ stardom Sabrina Furminger Reel People
@Sabrinarmf
If you want to dig down to the very roots of Jaime M. Callica’s burgeoning acting career, you have to go all the way back to the 1980s, and to a powerhouse performer otherwise known as the Gloved One. Like Michael Jackson, the Vancouver actor was a born entertainer. Callica grew up just north of Toronto, and was “performing before I could walk,” he laughs in a recent phone interview. Standing in front of his mother’s television set, watching “Bad” and “Beat It” on constant replay, he practiced the signature Michael moves until they were his moves, too (“My mom would always run up with
a pillow and say, ‘if you’re going to drop to your knees like Mike, make sure that pillow is on the ground there; I don’t want you hurting yourself!’”) – to the point where, at six- and seven-years-old, he was working birthday parties and weddings as an MJ impersonator. Callica danced throughout his teens, and more so after he moved to Vancouver in the early 2000s. He danced in music videos and feature films (including Percy Jackson and the Olympians:The Lightning Thief and Hellcats), and trained with Van City’s top hip-hop dancers at Granville Street’s Harbour Dance. Callica’s journey to be just “Like Mike” was moonwalking along just nicely – until a life-changing instant in 2004, when he and a friend were struck down in the street by a drunk driver. Although the friends survived the accident, Callica’s dance career was essentially derailed. He spent a few years on a vastly different path – the business world; he owned and operated a handful of stores in downtown Vancouver – that took him farther and farther from performing.
“I loved making business deals and I enjoyed it, but I always knew that I was put on this planet to perform in some capacity,” says Callica. “After the car accident, I felt like I’d lost a step.” Cut to the tail-end of 2011. “One day, I woke up, and I knew: ‘Today’s the day I make a change,’ and so I called my realtor and I said, ‘We’ve got to sell everything I have,’” says Callica. It took a year to sell off all of his stores, and after a few months of globetrotting, in early January 2013, Callica was once again immersed in the life of a full-time performer – but this time, as an actor. Since this drastic leap of faith, Callica has appeared in Smallville, Man of Steel,The Secret Circle, Big Time Movie, and The 100. He’s currently recurring on Fox’s Wayward Pines, a television adaptation of Blake Crouch’s bestselling trilogy of books. The first season of the creepy sci-fi drama starred Matt Dillon as a man who wakes up after a car accident in a strange town where – dun dun dun – nothing is as picture-perfect as it seems.
Vancouver actor Jaime M. Callica appears in Fox’s sci-fi drama Wayward Pines. Contributed photo When the second season premiered a few weeks ago (with Jason Patric replacing Dillon as the star of the show), Callica made his debut as Simeon, a supporting character whose role will expand over the course of the season. Next month, Callica will appear in the series finale of the Vancouver-shot whydunit, Motive. He’s also shooting his first leading role in a feature film: as a nerdy guy who wants to fit in with the cool crowd
in the comedy feature The Perfect Pickup. That’s a lot of success in three short years, but Callica is the first to admit it hasn’t been all smooth sailing since he made the decision to pursue acting full-time. “When I started, people would gas me up and say, ‘You’re a good-looking brother in the city, you’re going to book everything,’ and I had this notion that that would be true,” says Callica. He snagged a lot of auditions right away, but could
never seem to close the deal, with good reason. “I wasn’t good, so I wasn’t booking anything,” he says, chuckling. Despite this, casting directors continued to bring him into the audition room, “I feel almost like because they hoped that one day I would come in and just be better than those last 20 times, but I wasn’t.” And so Callica trained, with a discipline and diligence that would have impressed his idol. “It wasn’t until I decided to really put in the necessary work, the required work, did I start to see some success,” says Callica, noting that if he ever wins an award, he plans to thank casting directors from those early days for giving him the chance to get in the audition room and realize what he needed to do to succeed. Callica is a man of few regrets and little sadness. “If I could go back in time, I might say, ‘hey, dig those heels in a little harder and focus now, because greatness awaits you,’ but I also think everything was supposed to happen the way it did,” he says. W WAYWARD PINES Fox’s sci-fi drama airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Citytv. Follow Callica on Twitter @jaimecallica.
Siblings bond over experimental theatre KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen
Separated by a seven-year age gap, siblings Nick and Darby Steeves have led relatively separate lives. Very few of their interests or friends overlapped as they grew up. Then Nick left home to become a tech guy downtown and, after graduating high school, Darby pursued her dual talents of dancing and acting in New York and LA. But when Nick wanted to do something to bring the two of them closer together, he didn’t just send his little sister an email or organize a family potluck; he wrote her a play. “My sister is a professional actor, and I work in tech, so completely different,” says Nick, with a laugh. “But I wanted to have something that my sister and I could work on together. We’ve never had, like, a time in common […] and I thought this would be a great way for us to do something together.” Enter Surreal, an immersive, experimental play he
TAKE HOME A HOT NEW PHONE.
Actors Luke Sykes and Darby Steeves star in Surreal, an interactive play that takes place on the streets of Gastown. George Lawson photo created based on a site-specific theatrical experience he had in the States. “I had the idea for writing this after visiting my sister in New York,” Nick ex-
plains. “We saw a few plays on [and off] Broadway and one that we saw was called Sleep No More, which is a very interactive experience where you go into this old,
abandoned warehouse that they converted into this 1930s-style hotel and the actors are all around you. “I’ve never found stage theatre to be that engaging
$
of an experience, but this I was really amazed by, and I thought it would be a really cool experience to create here in Vancouver.” His subsequent homage centres around the lives of Tom and Charlie, two 20-something Vancouverites who were childhood friends, and who run into each other again in Gastown. The comedic storyline swirls around big decisions in their lives, based loosely on the Steeves’ own life twists, while offering a glimpse into the realities of present day Vancouver. The actors, played by a rotating local cast, have the framework of a 70-minute script as they move through the bustling streets and back alleys of Gastown, but the audience determines how the encounter ultimately unfolds. For example, Tom has just come from an important job interview in the tech industry and the audience gets to help him navigate a series of challenges and tests from his prospective employer, an Elon Musk-like demigod. The whole experience
walks the fine line between gritty reality and a carefully crafted work of fiction, hence the name Surreal. And while writing and producing the concept offered a creative outlet for Nick, who works at an online marketing company and has never written a play before, Darby, who has primarily worked as a dancer on theatre sets to date, has seen her directing and theatrical chops grow. “Doing this play, with my brother especially, has been such an educational experience,” says the actress, who is in town for the next 12 months filming a slew of made-for-TV movies (she just wrapped Murder of the Heart, starring The Good Wife’s Makenzie Vega). “It’s immersive theatre, and so, although we use techniques from our stage acting, the concept makes us as actors lean towards film because the audience is so close. It’s been quite the technical workout!” $ 8:"",45 ":1! 2:1, '+ </ 8,#<* &( ,9,"3 6:,!.43 41. )";.43*6;07,<! %'- 4< 8:"realTheatre.com. W

Get the look: Jed Marshall of ‘The Night Manager’ Aileen Lalor Style File
@AileenLalor
There are so many reasons to love AMC’s The Night Manager: the gripping John Le Carré plot; Hugh Laurie’s chilling performance as arch-baddie Richard Roper; the brief flash of Tom Hiddlestone’s bum. But top of our list is the style of Roper’s mistress, Jed Marshall, played by Aussie actress Elizabeth Debicki.

Jed’s look is sexy, but not obvious, youthful, but not ingenue, and glamorous, but not try-hard. Of course, she’s sixfoot-three, 25, and bankrolled by a multimillionare, and we are... not. But that doesn’t mean we can’t attempt to emulate her look.
ABOUT FACE
When Jed gets dressed up, she keeps things classic with a slick of red lipstick. We like Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick in Mrs. Mia Wallace ($21, at Sephora and selected branches of Shoppers Drug Mart). It’s intensely pigmented, rich and creamy, and named after the perennially cool character played by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. Jed’s eyebrows are thinner than is fashionable right now, and perfectly groomed.Try Benefit’s KaBrow, which comes in six colours, is buildable, and stays waterproof for up to 24 hours. $30, at Sephora.
TOP OF THE CROPS
Jed’s haircut caused a stir when the show first aired in the UK. It’s short, but still feminine, and according to hairstylist Shay of Pome Studio (Pome.ca), is less of a commitment than a pixie-cut because it will grow out faster. “The sweeping fringe flatters lots of face shapes too,” she says.To get Jed’s more polished look, Shay suggests Kevin Murphy’s Free.Hold ($30), which is for medium to thick hair and gives a shiny finish. For a more lived-in look, she recommends Kevin Murphy’s Hair Resort ($30), which gives texture and a matte finish. For Kevin Murphy stockists, visit KevinMurphy.com.au.
SWING OUT
Statement earrings look great on short-haired women. Jed rocks her gobstopper-sized pearls.Vancouver jewellery designer Leah Alexandra offers a subtler take in white or grey freshwater pearl. $155, LeahAlexandra.com.

Mushrooms are one of those foods that you either love or hate. It’s too bad for those who haven’t acquired a taste for these fun fungi, as there are many different varieties around the world used for whatever ails you. You may have seen the ads for cancer-fighting and immune-boosting benefits, and in Vancouver it’s very rare to walk into a restaurant and not see them on the menu, especially in Asian cuisine. But whatever side of the fungi fence you’re on, you can’t deny that there is something special – and even mystical – about these marvelous mushrooms. Now, as I am sure you are aware, there are good mushrooms and there are bad mushrooms, and when I say bad, I mean slow-painful-death bad (or quick, depending on the mushroom). It is not as fun as Alice in Wonderland may have led you to believe. There are a variety of wild edible mushrooms out there if you know where to look. The oyster mushroom, blue chanterelle and cauliflower mushroom are just a few of the varieties that can be found locally and safely identified (although I encourage you to take an educated tour which are available all over the city before you dive into forag-

BC’s forests are packed with delicious, healthy mushroom morsels – but unless you are a trained mushroom picker, leave the foraging to the professionals. iStock photo ing). And FYI, it’s illegal to forage mushrooms in BC parks, so you might want to start off with the farmers’ market. It’s fair to say that you are taking a risk by foraging your own mushrooms – there are folks that definitely know what they are doing, but even experts can accidentally poison themselves by making an unfortunate mistake. Mushrooms aren’t quite like snowflakes – they can be very similar to each other, making it hard to pick out the good from the bad. Like many things in life, mushrooms are at the center of folklore and mysticism. For example, the red and white fly agaric – you know, that mushroom that
you automatically picture a fairy sitting on top of – is beleived to have been used by European shamans and religious leaders as a hallucinogenic. It contains two toxins that reduce the body’s response to fear and there is question whether or not warriors ingested it prior to battle. Fly agaric is still classified as poisonous, so don’t go hunting for them before your next big public speaking gig or Tinder date. Another fungi folk tale is the appearance of a ring of mushrooms, known as fairy rings. It is said that this is where the fairies come to dance after it has rain (I am imagining a rave), and if a human enters this ring they may fall asleep for a
hundred years or disappear. Fairies don’t like party crashers and become total downers when disturbed, apparently. Lame! According to hieroglyphs from 4,600 years ago, the ancient Egyptians believed that mushrooms were the plant of immortality. The point being, mushrooms have been around for a very long time, and everyone has something to say about them. With so many varieties around the world, mushrooms contain a variety of natural medicines. Some are known to have antibacterial and antiviral properties. Even toxic mushrooms that use their poison to protect themselves from predators can be used to produce environmentally friendly pesticides. Mushrooms can help with weight management, build your immune system, and even increase your vitamin D levels, as well as having anti-inflammatory properties. They are pretty bad ass, and you can prepare them in so many ways. Of course, it’s always good to check with a professional before using them for medicinal purposes, but if you get the go-ahead, the world is your oyster... mushroom. Get it? W

SEX — IS NOW —
Update your bestiality laws, Canada! Sex with Mish Way
@MyszkaWay Three years ago, a British Columbia man was found guilty of 13 counts of sexually molesting his two stepdaughters, subjecting them to a decade of abuse, and a lifetime of trauma. The most appalling charge was one count of bestiality. Apparently, the stepfather forced the older stepdaughter into sexual relations with the family dog by luring the dog to her genitals with peanut butter and documenting the sex act. However, the defending pervert successfully challenged the bestiality conviction in the BC Court of Appeal this month based on the fact that the sex act he facilitated between the dog and his stepdaughter did not include penetration. Because, according to the law set in 1945, bestiality can only be defined as “buggery with an animal and required penetration.” The stepfather (who has to remain nameless in the press to protect the identity of his stepdaughters) argued that what he committed was not actually bestiality, since their was no penetrative sex. The Supreme Court agreed, 6-1, rejecting the notion that bestiality is an offense encompassing sexual activity of any kind between a person and an animal. “The term ‘bestiality’ has a well-established legal meaning and refers to sexual intercourse between a human and an animal. Penetration has always been understood to be an essential element of bestiality,” wrote Justice Thomas Cromwell on behalf of the court. “Parliament may wish to consider whether the present provisions adequately protect children and animals. But it is for Parliament, not the courts, to expand the scope of criminal liability for this ancient offense.” Lawyer and executive director of Animal Justice, Camille Labchuk, said the Supreme Court’s decision on this case was a huge wakeup call that the criminal laws protecting animals in Canada are completely dated. Labchuk is calling the Parliament to step in and fix the laws to reflect modern beliefs. She also urged the government to support a bill put forth by Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith. His bill is more about protecting animals in the PETA sense of the word (ending the practice of shark finning and banning the sale of cat and dog fur, for example), but the Liberal government does not support it. (They claim the bill would have a huge effect on pros-
Westender.com
perous hunting and fishing groups who rely on animal use for the economy.) Although Justice Rosalie Abella agreed that the legal definition is archaic and should be updated, it has not. Basically, bestiality is totally legal in our fair nation as long as there is no “D” in the “V” involved. I know this is a disturbing subject for most readers, but I am completely and clinically numb to it after completing a heavy research piece for Broadly last year about zoophiles and bestiality. Zoophilia is defined as “extreme love for animals, specifically abnormal sexual attraction to animals,” while bestiality is “any sexual relations between a person and an animal.” During my study, I spent hours in the deepest, darkest corners of the web talking to people who participated in these sex acts and had, what they defined as, deep and meaningful relationships with their German Shepherds. Half of them tried to convince me that what they were doing was not harming, but enriching, the animal, while many women did not care and were just into deviant sex acts of many kinds. I picked the brain of Dr. Hani Milestski who’s book Understanding Bestiality and Zoophilia was the most extensive study to date. I dove head first into the back catalogue of Bodil Jorgensen, the Danish pig farmer turned Queen of Bestiality who made one of the first bestiality films to ever hit porn success. It’s strange how something so disgusting becomes mundane once you
are completely immersed in the research and looking at it devoid of subjection. Kind of like the way a gynecologist sees a vagina after her 500th patient. I remember having dinner with my husband and telling him what I had read that day about what happens if dog semen finds its way into a human vagina. He looked at me like I had fucked a dog myself. Now, a year later and completely removed from my research, when I saw the headline about this case earlier this month I was disgusted. Even more so I was disgusted that this perverted stepfather was trying to get off on a technicality to lessen his charges. The man forced his stepdaughter to have her genitals licked by a dog. He deserves to be coated in Cheez Whiz and thrown into a pit of rabid, rabies-infested pit bulls. Though this did not happen (because we are too soft up here in Canada), he will be serving 14 years in jail and hopefully get the Jeffrey Dahmer treatment, instead of leeching tax payers dollars to pay for his “three hots and a cot.” Dear Canada, Oh Canada. While you are messing with the national anthem, maybe you can update our bestiality charges to involve more than just penetrative intercourse? W

Free Will Astrology
Horoscopes as provided by WE Editorial By Rob Brezsny
“The past lives on in art and memory,” writes author Margaret Drabble, “but it is not static: it shifts and changes as the present throws its shadow backwards.” That’s a fertile thought for you to meditate on during the coming weeks, Aries. Why? Because your history will be in a state of dramatic fermentation. The old days and the old ways will be mutating every which way. I hope you will be motivated, as a result, to rework the story of your life with flair and verve.
“Critics of text-messaging are wrong to think it’s a regressive form of communication,” writes poet Lily Akerman. “It demands so much concision, subtlety, psychological art – in fact, it’s more like pulling puppet strings than writing.” I bring this thought to your attention, Taurus, because in my opinion the coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to apply the metaphor of text-messaging to pretty much everything you do. You will create interesting ripples of success as you practice the crafts of concision, subtlety, and psychological art.
During my careers as a writer and musician, many “experts” have advised me not to be so damn faithful to my muse. Having artistic integrity is a foolish indulgence that would ensure my eternal poverty, they have warned. If I want to be successful, I’ve got to sell out; I must water down my unique message and pay homage to the generic formulas favored by celebrity artists. Luckily for me, I have ignored the experts. As a result, my soul has thrived and I eventually earned enough money from my art to avoid starvation. But does my path apply to you? Maybe; maybe not. What if, in your case, it would be better to sell out a little and be, say, just 75 percent faithful to your muse? The next 12 months will be an excellent time for you to figure this out once and for all.
My meditations have generated six metaphorical scenarios that will symbolize the contours of your life story during the next 15 months: 1. A claustrophobic tunnel that leads to a sparkling spa; 2. A 19th-century Victorian vase filled with 13 fresh wild orchids; 3. An immigrant who, after tenacious effort, receives a green card from her new home country; 4.An 11-year-old child capably playing a 315-year-old Stradivarius violin; 5. A menopausal empty-nester who falls in love with the work of an ecstatic poet; 6. A humble seeker who works hard to get the help necessary to defeat an old curse.
Joan Wasser is a Leo singer-songwriter who is known by her stage name Joan As Police Woman. In her song “The Magic,” she repeats one of the lyric lines fourteen times: “I’m looking for the magic.” For two reasons, I propose that we make that your mantra in the coming weeks. First, practical businessas-usual will not provide the uncanny transformative power you need. Nor will rational analysis or habitual formulas. You will have to conjure, dig up, or track down some real magic. My second reason for suggesting “I’m looking for the magic” as your mantra is this: You’re not yet ripe enough to secure the magic, but you can become ripe enough by being dogged in your pursuit of it.
Renowned martial artist Bruce Lee described the opponent he was most wary of: “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” In my astrological opinion, you should regard that as one of your keystone principles during the next 12 months. Your power and glory will come from honing one specific skill, not experimenting restlessly with many different skills. And the coming weeks will be en excellent time to set your intention.
To celebrate my birthday, I’m taking time off from dreaming up original thoughts and creative spurs. For this horoscope, I’m borrowing some of the BOLD Laws of author Dianna Kokoszka. They are in sweet alignment with your astrological omens for the next 13 months. Take it away, Dianna. 1. Focus on the solution, not the problem. 2. Complaining is a garbage magnet. 3. What you focus on expands. 4. Do what you have always done, and you will get what you have always gotten. 5. Don’t compare your insides to other people’s outsides. 6. Success is simple, but not easy. 7. Don’t listen to your drunk monkey. 8. Clarity is power. 9. Don’t mistake movement for achievement. 10. Spontaneity is a conditioned reflex. 11. People will grow into the conversations you create around them. 12. How you participate here is how you participate everywhere. 13. Live your life by design, not by default.
No pressure, no diamond. No grit, no pearl. No cocoon, no butterfly. All these clichés will be featured themes for you during the next 12 months. But I hope you will also come up with fresher ways to think about the power and value that can be generated by tough assignments. If you face your exotic dilemmas and unprecedented riddles armed with nothing more than your culture’s platitudes, you won’t be able to tap into the untamed creativity necessary to turn problems into opportunities. Here’s an example of the kind of original thinking you’ll thrive on: The more the growing chamomile plant is trodden upon, the faster it grows.
The royal courts of Renaissance England often employed professional fools whose job it was to speak raw or controversial truths with comedic effect. According to the Royal Shakespeare Company, Queen Elizabeth once castigated her fool for being “insufficiently severe with her.” The modern-day ombudsman has some similarities to the fool’s function. He or she is hired by an organization to investigate complaints lodged by the public against the organization. Now would be an excellent time for you to have a fool or ombudsman in your own sphere, Sagittarius. You’ve got a lot of good inklings, but some of them need to be edited, critiqued, or perhaps even satirized.
Capricorn journalist Katie Couric is a bestselling author who has interviewed five American presidents and had prominent jobs at three major TV networks. What’s her secret to success? She has testified that her goal is to be as ingratiating and charming as she can be without causing herself to throw up. I don’t often recommend this strategy for you, but I do now. The coming weeks will be prime time for you to expand your web of connections and energize your relationships with existing allies by being almost too nice. To get what you want, use politeness as your secret weapon.
“The water cannot talk without the rocks,” says aphorist James Richardson. Does that sound like a metaphor you’d like to celebrate in the coming weeks? I hope so. From what I can tell, you will be like a clean, clear stream rippling over a rocky patch of river bed. The not-really-all-that-bad news is that your flow may feel erratic and jerky. The really good news is that you will be inspired to speak freely, articulately, and with creative zing.
Every now and then you may benefit from being a bit juvenile, even childlike. You can release your dormant creativity by losing your adult composure and indulging in free-form play. In my astrological opinion, this is one of those phases for you. It’s high time to lose your cool in the best possible ways. You have a duty to explore the frontiers of spontaneity and indulge in I-don’t-give-a-cluck exuberance. For the sake of your peace-of-soul and your physical health, you need to wriggle free of at least some of your grown-up responsibilities so you can romp and cavort and frolic.
