TUCK THE TOQUE

13

Re:“Deighton Cup inspiration.” Style File, July 14, 2016 In the “heads up” paragraph, [writer Aileen Lalor] mentions that hats are not mandatory but that it would give Vancouverites a chance to “put something other than a toque on their heads.” I do believe that she means to say or use the word “tuque” (tu:k) as that is the item usually worn on the

head here in Canada when it is freezing cold. Being from Ontario and having wonderful winters with plenty of snow, ice, and freezing cold, we would play outside in the snow and go skating all day while wearing our snowsuits, boots and or skates, mittens, scarves and most importantly, our tuques on our heads. Personally and I have never known anyone here in Canada who has ever

You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack by Tom Gauld

worn a toque (pronounced tuck) as headgear. The word “toque” in Canada (actually in French) describes a hairstyle (bun) worn at the back of the head. I don’t know who started this “toque” thing but I have never heard or seen that word except here in Vancouver. –D.L. Dalbec Editor’s Note:Tuque is the preferred spelling, however both are considered correct.

Glimmer of hope and reason in Vancouver real estate crisis Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

Finally! At long last, there has been a logical and viable suggestion put forth to lower the heat on our red-hot real estate crisis that is roasting our city like a pig on a spit. Recently, the practically out-of-work Home Inspectors Association of B.C. (HIABC) called upon our provincial government to put in place a mandatory seven-day period after an offer is accepted on a home, in order to have that home properly inspected. If you’ve been through the thankless process of attending an open house within the last couple of years, you’ll know the scene: it’s like a house party where everyone ignores each other while wandering the halls in their socks, poking in every corner, while a smug real estate agent stands in the kitchen handing out glossy flyers, which boast fish-eye lens photos that make every room look like a football field. The open house happens on Saturday and/or Sunday, and they’re accepting offers just hours later, on Sunday evening. They expect a sale

by Monday morning. Done and done. Who can make such a major life decision in mere hours? It’s scandalous. In the old days, you’d find a house that could potentially suit your needs. You’d put various “subject-to’s” on your offer: subject to financing, subject to sale of your current home, and subject to inspection. These days, chances are your real estate agent is advising you out of the corner his mouth that if you want your offer to be remotely competitive, you must submit it “subject free”, which is otherwise known as “buying blind”. That’s putting home inspectors out of work. These are the men and women who discover things like leaky roofs, cracked foundations, firetrap electrical systems and much worse,

before you make the biggest purchase of your life. Often times, if an inspection is to happen at all in 2016, it occurs after the purchase, which is kind of like trying to put on a life jacket after you’ve fallen in the water. I’m fully aware that it’s in the HIABC’s vested interest to have a “cooling off” window because it gets home inspectors working again, but it’s truly in your best interest as well. Those seven days could not only save you hundreds of thousands of dollars from money-pit hell, but could also substantially cool our mid- to lower-range housing market, as potential buyers walk away from million dollar shitholes that aren’t worth the reno headache. It doesn’t solve the problem of ripping down good homes or foreign buyers

CITY SHORTS // LOCAL MLA WANTS TO BATTLE THE BOTS

The furor on social media was palpable, and the disappointment and frustration was felt from one Canadian ocean to the next. Buoyed by a need to battle the bots that are the bane of concertgoers’ existence, Vancouver-West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert is calling on the province for legislation to control the en masse scalping of tickets online. Chandra Herbert made the commentsTuesday afternoon, after an InsightsWest poll claimed almost a third of Canadian concertgoers have struck out when trying to get tickets through primary ticket outlets such asTicketmaster. “This certainly confirms what I’ve heard – it makes people mad,” Chandra Herbert said. “When any bigname artist is in town, people will get upset. And for good reason – people are getting gouged here through unfair practices.” Bots are computer programs used to buy tickets online. They’re then re-sold at a much higher prices through secondary ticket vendors. That the Insights poll was

Many Tragically Hip fans were left emptyhanded as online scalpers snatched up tickets to the Canadian band’s final tour. Aven Hoffarth photo

released just days before the Tragically Hip’s farewell tour begins isn’t exactly happenstance. Mario Canseco, Insight West’s vice president of public affairs, said more than a half dozen of his employees tried to get tickets during both the pre-sale and general sales. He said by 9:03am on both days, not only were the shows sold out, but tickets were being re-sold at huge markups. “We thought it was ridiculous,” he said. “You start to wonder, is this something that’s just happening to me, or is this a qualitative experience where it’s something that is happening to everybody?” Some of the highlights fromTuesday’s poll include: Three in 10 Canadians who attend concerts have been unable to buy tickets

to the performance of their choice. 28 per cent say they attempted unsuccessfully to buy tickets through a primary ticket outlet. 17 per cent say they bought tickets through a secondary ticket seller, such as StubHub, including 25 per cent in BC. 87 per cent of respondents would support severe fines or jail time for scalpers caught using bots to buy tickets online. Perhaps most surprisingly, 32 per cent of those polled suggested a return to yesteryear: lining up outside venues or ticket outlets in a firstcome, first-served system. “You have a third of people of who said, ‘Yeah, I’ll grab my lawn chair and I’ll spend 48 hours there eating food from a can just to have an equal chance to get tickets to

snapping up high-end properties sight unseen, but it would help the average-value buyers. I’ll go a step further: the biggest problem in our current real estate bidding system is that it also forces you to buy blind, because you can’t see the other bids. That’s outrageous, and could easily cause the desperate house shopper to vastly overbid. The closedauction system could also lead to corruption and collusion between real estate agents. Open it up! Reality check: your agent is not just supposed to find you a sound home, but also represent your best interests by finding you the best house and price possible. I’ve often advised friends shopping for a home to never tell your real estate agent your ceiling price, because if you do, they’ll take you there faster than the elevator to the top of the Harbour Centre, leaving you dizzy. Too often, the highly questionable threat of “multiple offers” is an emotional trigger potentially used by both selling and buying agents to hustle maximum dollars from you in a ridiculously short timeframe with no means of backing out, which is exactly why the HIABC is on the right track. W the performance that I want to go to,’” Canseco said. “It’s like asking somebody if they want to go back to using the rotary phone.Technology has advanced so much, but now it’s being used against us.” Canseco noted that policies in Israel restrict tickets from being re-sold for above face value. NewYork State is also looking at implementing punitive fines or even jail time for scalpers using bots. An admitted Hip fan who didn’t even try to get tickets because of the current system, Chandra Herbert pushed for legislation via a private member’s bill in 2009 to regulate the ticket industry. He renewed those calls earlier this spring and wants an industry panel including sellers, re-sellers, artists, fans and government to find a solution. “Let’s draft a set of guidelines that are going to work,” he said. “Some regulation is going to be required but let’s involve the folks that are in the market because there are all sorts of loopholes that people game the system with now.” The Hip playsVancouver on Sunday, July 24 andTuesday, July 26. Good luck trying to get tickets. –John Kurucz,Vancouver Courier

Designer Files: Styling the perfect patio party Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK Now that summer seems to have (thankfully) arrived, the mood to entertain outdoors has taken over the city. Before you host your next soirée, there are a few key tips to keep in mind

when creating the ultimate patio party. First, pick a theme that stays true to your design style: choose an outdoor decor that suits your personality and interior decor so that it doesn’t feel contrived. Continuity will allow you to bring textiles and details from your interior (ie: rugs, throws and pillows) to create softness and carry the theme from indoors out.

Second, create intimate and functional gathering areas with modular furniture. Rather than a full set of solid furnishings, choose a variety of styles of seating to allow guests to sit where and how they choose. In addition to the traditional outdoor sofa, consider also using poufs, stools that can double as side tables, and even floor cushions to create an entertaining space that can easily be

adjusted to suit the crowd. Next, the key to nailing to ambiance of any party is the lighting. To effectively light the mood, use a variety of outdoor lighting to create the desired effect. Combining outdoor lanterns, string/ twinkle lights, candles and outdoor chandeliers allows you to control the vibe all night long. Another factor to a successful summer soirée is

tuning in on the tone: every party needs a playlist and the patio party is no exception. Invest in portable outdoor speakers that are Bluetooth compatible with your iPad or phone so that you can keep the beats in tune with the mood from wherever you are. Lastly, don’t forget to serve in style: outdoor serving ware doesn’t get a design pass just because plastic is

preferred. Choose outdoor stemware and dinnerware that suits your decor - even the fanciest of dinners lose appeal on a paper plate. A chic way to display the outdoor dishware is a rolling bar cart; not only can you wheel the cart to wherever you wish to serve your guests, but the dishes can get stored on the cart and rolled out of sight when not in use. The only six items you need in your travel bag Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor

In days of yore, our hand luggage contained six paperbacks and a Walkman. But that was before the Kindle, the iPhone, and a missed connection that led to an unexpected night in the Holiday Inn, Ronkonkoma Long Island. We gazed at the books we’d already read and the tape player with the flat battery, and realized that the next day, we would have to wash our faces with shower gel and put back on our grubby clothes for another six-hour flight. We vowed that, henceforth, our travel bags would contain a toothbrush, clean clothes, and the means to make ourselves presentable in case of tourism calamities. This summer, we’ll be packing these six items.

1. CLEANSE WITH BENEFITS

Your average hotel room will have stuff to clean and moisturize your hair and body, but not your face, so we’re packing the Marrakech Travel Kit Weekender from Leaves of Trees. The Toronto brand specializes in

fair-trade, natural products and produces an exceptional cream deodorant. In this kit, you get travel sizes of the deodorant, cleansing oil, argan oil, lipbalm and headache balm, plus a Turkish face cloth. It all comes in a compact waxed canvas bag. $95, at BeautyMark.

2. DRESSED UP

A crease-proof dress, such as the Topshop Strappy Scoop Neck Maxi Dress, is a must. It’s jersey, so you can crumple it into a ball without it creasing, and black, so it goes with anything. Wear it with flip flops, sandals or trainers. $40, at Topshop at Hudson’s Bay and TheBay.ca

3. BLANKET SOLUTION

What Vancouver girl gets on a plane without her Aritzia blanket scarf? If you don’t have one already, get the Mod Tapestry Blanket, which is 100 per cent wool and has an abstract pastel design. It’s smaller and easier to pack than a sweater, and can be used in place of a flimsy airline blanket on the plane. $65, at Aritzia and Aritzia.com

4. MOUTH ALMIGHTY

It’s surprising how many hotels don’t provide toothpaste, so just in case, stash a bottle of Lush’s Toothy Tabs – solid pills made from

6

baking soda, kaolin clay and essential oils. Crush one between your teeth, then brush as usual with your wet toothbrush. The tabs come in six flavours but we like Miles of Smiles – good old mint. $9.95 for around 100 tabs, at Lush stores and Lush.ca.

5. YOU GLOW GIRL

Little kits with basics like lipstick, blush and mascara used to be everywhere, but now they’re almost impossible to find. Happily, Benefit does a few, including Do the Hoola, which contains liquid and powder bronzers, mascara

and Benebalm lip balm. $44, at Sephora and Sephora.ca

6. SUPER UNDIES

For our next trip, we’ll wear and pack knickers from travel brand ExOfficio. They’re comfy and can be washed and dried in your

hotel bathroom. Wear them while you shower, squeeze them in a towel, and hang them up. They’ll be completely dry within four hours. We recommend the Sport Mesh Bikini Briefs. $24, at Valhalla Pure Outfitters. W

@FoodgirlFriday Carriage rides and gardens, high tea and castles…the stereotypical image of Victoria as a destination for fuddyduddies and those looking to exploreYe Olde Britannia is so outdated as to be more myth than matter.Today, the city by the bay is home to some of the most innovative and delicious food and cocktails you will find on the West Coast. If you’re wondering what attracts such a high ratio of top-notch restaurants and watering holes to such a relatively small demographic, geography definitely plays a part.Vancouver Island is home to more than a few handfuls of artisans, farmers, distillers, wineries and brewers, and the temperate climate allows for generally longer and warmer growing seasons, with milder winters. This translates into chefs who not only source most of their ingredients from within the proverbial stone’s throw of their restaurants, but also grow some or all of those ingredients themselves. This also influences the cocktail scene, resulting in cuttingedge mixology with a hyperlocal focus.

Here are a few places to try next time you feel like a quick getaway.

PART AND PARCEL

Don’t be fooled by the stage at the front of this one-yearnew restaurant. Sure, there’s live music most nights after 8pm, but it’s the food – and cocktails – that will have you haunting the doorstep. Chef and co-owner Torin Egan has put together a deceptively simple menu that screams “pub” but delivers on a much higher-level. Poutine ($13) is brightened with a smoky pork gravy that got wiped clean. Chicken liver toasts ($10) deliver a feral and massive punch of flavour, offset by the not-too-sweet bacon jam and excellent bread. That jam is also an option on the house burger ($18), made from house-ground brisket and topped with sharp white cheddar and onion aioli. Pork ribs ($15) are glazed in maple syrup and mustard and dressed with charred scallions and fried shallots. Bar manager Tim Siebert has created some food-friendly cocktails. I loved the Pretty in Pink ($11), made with Ampersand gin, lillet, a housemade rhubarb and fennel syrup, and a squeeze of lemon. NorthernQuarter.ca

Outside of the busy downtown core, this tiny counterservice eatery is located in Quadra Village and is run by husband-and-wife team Grant and Anna Gard. It’s a bright, white room with a homey wooden counter and simple booths and banquets. Open for lunch and early dinner, the oft-rotating menu features hearty sandwiches like the kamut-breaded and fried chicken ($11) on a beautiful organic bun from Fry’s Bakery, and loaded with coleslaw, housemade pickles and bacon. The wings ($8) are prepared the same way and were perfectly brittle and crispy on the outside and supremely juicy within. Or go for something a bit healthier like the stunning roasted beet and quinoa salad ($10) with feta, almonds, poppy seeds and edible flowers and herbs. Middle Eastern flavours abound, as in the “Moroccan” fries ($5) with ras el hanout and a harissa mayo. Everything is remarkably comforting, especially the grits topped with a mushroom ragout and runny egg ($14) we had on one lunch visit. And, don’t forget to save room for the baked goods. It’s licensed, so there is also a small but solid

FISH HOOK

If you’ve ever braved the extraordinarily long line-ups outside of Red Fish Blue Fish,

you’re familiar with the food of Kunal Ghose, a former Top Chef Canada contender who’s redefined what fish shacks are all about in Victoria. With the opening of Fish Hook, his second venture, this time in partnership with seafood emporium Hook Fine Foods, Ghose has blown me away once again. Fish Hook is a counter-service restaurant that delivers haute cuisine quality with a focus that seems so incongruous as to be superbly refreshing. Think Indian fish shack with a focus on French tartines.Yeah, you heard me.The quintessential French open-faced and toasted sandwich meets curry meets seafood, and it’s lovely. The tartines themselves don’t speak so much of sub-continent flavour, but the smoked black cod with herb-and-chive mustard and wilted kale ($7) is heavenly, as is the seared and broiled wild salmon belly “dog” with smoked salmon belly “bacon” ($11.25).Yes, salmon belly bacon and yes, you definitely want to try it. The house chowder (small for $4) is another winner, with more of that bacon, plus halibut confit, thyme-chili roasted potatoes, coconut milk and a base of smoked fish broth. Deeply aromatic and warming, the only thing that makes it better is the fact that you can get it to go. FishHookVic.com

Craft beer embraces the can Stephen Smysnuik The Growler

West Coast Canning is launching a collaborative cucumber sour ale with Hearthstone Brewery at the CanCity festival of canned beer on July 30 . Facebook/WCC photo

You’d think that in 2016, with craft beer a considerable cultural industry, the discussion about the quality of canned craft beer would have gone extinct – but sadly, this isn’t the case.

And it’s a particular sore point for Matt Human, marketing manager for West Coast Canning, who says he’s tired of people thinking that bottled beer is “more craft.” “We’d like to break that stigma, if we can,” Human says. “Everyone has this idea that it might [affect the taste of the beer]. We have no

idea where that came from. Maybe from some bad cans back in the day.” And so Human and the folks at West Coast Canning conceived of CanCity, a daylong beer festival being held on July 30 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza. The event will feature 20 breweries pouring from cans, in an effort to hip consumers to the fact that canned beer is just beer – no better, no worse. But the event also doubles as a celebration party after West Coast Canning’s two years in business. In that time, the business has quadrupled in size, and they’ve effectively cornered the market for mobile canning in BC. Matt Leslie and Kevin Peterson launched the company in 2014, inspired by mobile canning operations

There just weren’t enough businesses at the time that needed WCC’s services. But emphasis must be placed on premature, because within six months, a dozen breweries had opened up. How to beat the summer blues Michaela Morris By the Bottle @MichaelaWine

We have control over very little in life, least of all the weather. Vancouver is well known for its unique month of Jun-uary and as much as we complain, it’s soon forgotten when fairer July rolls around. This year, we’re still waiting. While it doesn’t have the same ring, I’ve heard people muttering about Juluary under their breath. One way to beat the weather is to drink like the sun is shining.Yes, that means sticking to your summer regime of crisp whites, cool rosés and light, refreshing reds. These will trick your palette into thinking it’s truly summer in every way. Repeat often enough and it may even inspire the sun to return.

Continued from page 8 Today, WCC has 28 regular clients, including popular local breweries Strange Fellows, Steel & Oak and Moody Ales, and it has recently begun canning in Alberta. “We’re lucky enough… that we’re now included in people’s business plans as breweries start to open, which is huge for us,” Human says. Today, they have two full-time mobile crews operating five days a week, plus another crew at their Burnaby warehouse, sleeving cans for clients that need them. WCC charges by the can, the cost of which varies depending on what a company needs. Leslie says, “We’re a cheaper alternative in that it’s easier to get into the marketplace through us. We’re of course more expensive on the cost per can, but they don’t have to shell out $150,000 for a canning line.” He adds, “Honestly, it’s been crazy this summer. It was crazy last summer, and this summer is crazy busy but everyone’s doing even more. We’re at places more often and we’re also canning more beer,” Leslie says. He attributes this to the fact that most of their clients who are in their second or third years in business and following through on

Here’s a juicy little number from South Africa. With 80 per cent Chenin Blanc in the blend, there is plenty of mouthwatering acidity. The remaining touch of Viognier adds exotic aromas and flavours. Equally delicious with a prawn and pineapple salad or chips and salsa. And the price is really right, too.

2015 Jaun Gil, ‘Honoro Vera’ Rosé, Jumilla DO, Spain $1819 Private Wine Stores I’ll admit that the glitzy label tricked me into thinking this would be sweet. I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong. And even though it hails from the sultry reaches of southern Spain, alcohol is kept in check (12.5%). A blend of Tempranillo and Syrah, it possesses lovely nuances of melon, raspberry and wild thyme. Made for grazing on simple tapas.

2015 Mirabeau, ‘Pure’ Rosé, Côtes de Provence AOP, business expansion plans that include more packaging. This speaks to the consumer demand for more locally produced craft beer. According to the BC Craft Brewers Guild, craft beer has grown to 23 per cent of BC’s beer market, up from 20 per cent in 2014. This is encouraging news for the industry, as beer produced by macro breweries – and the beer segment as a whole – continues to decline. Yet, as the industry grows, as more breweries open and more beers are produced, the shelves at liquor stores are becoming more crowded. But while Leslie doesn’t deny this is the case, he says he’s not particularly concerned about it. “We use the US as a forecasting tool. We don’t see it happening there,” he says. “In places like Portland, yeah, breweries are fighting for shelf space, but breweries are still thriving down there, as well. “Until that point where we start to see a problem down there, we don’t really see a problem up here. There’s not that much of a difference, other than we’re taxed more on the beers. The customers are the same.” W $ &WP&4I- LGPJ CG2- =Y 8LOQ S?5 NQ WI I6: @! )6:WIL: A2W,WH )4/ 'S90 &(B&D)#H>WH

Now is the time to sample your way through all of those pretty pinks from Provence that came in just for the season. ‘Pure’ is a classic and classy blend of Grenache and Syrah that encapsulates the lightness of summer. Red Gate’s Alleyfest inspires love for local arts

GREGORY ADAMS @gregoryadamsbc

Local arts and music hub the Red Gate has had a fractured relationship with the city over the years, to say the least, but its many volunteers still have big love for Vancouver. Even while the state of its current space at 855 E. Hastings hangs in jeopardy, this coming weekend’s inaugural Alleyfest is an all-out celebration for the many acts that are often seeing playing the venue’s concrete concert area, or at least practicing in one of its 10 lockout rehearsal rooms. KatayoonYousefbigloo, a longtime Red Gate Arts Society planner and bassist for Other Jesus that has been shaping the fest behind-the-scenes, says that the all-day event is a tribute to everyone involved in the DIY organization. “I just tried to think about the bands that play Red Gate a lot,” she tells Westender over the phone, of the Alleyfest lineup, which includes her own group, as well as venue faves like conceptual psychrock pushers Dada Plan and ambient soundscaper Stefana Fratila. “I know it’s kind of weird to make a show at a venue with bands that play there every weekend, but I wanted it to be a thank you to those bands.” Yousefbigloo has been involved with the Red Gate for years, having once held an art studio at the society’s much-missed (though aged), three-level community space on the 100 Block of Hastings. The spot was shut down by the city in 2011 over “unsafe and hazardous conditions”. The artist recalls the depressing year spent trying to find a new building (“it killed our souls,” she says), and how its current locale needed some TLC when they moved into the building in early 2013. “When we first moved into this one, it didn’t have that same kind of character to begin with, because it was

Red Gate Arts Society director Katayoon Yousefbigloo (pictured centre, in red) with supporting volunteers. Jennifer Gauthier photo an old Dim Sum factory,” Yousefbigloo remembers, adding that she and fellow Other Jesus bandmate Jake Hardy had helped build and section off practice spaces within the building. “We had to work on making people feel comfortable, [but] a lot of people have been moving more and more east since this place has opened up.” Comfort is big for the Red Gate Arts Society, which encourages and nurtures artists from all kinds of backgrounds. For veterans of the local scene, it’s a homebase. For beginners, it’s a boon, and a welcoming entry point into the local arts community. “I feel like, if you’re an entry level musician, then

getting the space, getting the gear, booking the show... where do you even begin? Who do you talk to if you’re not really involved, or just getting into it,”Yousefbigloo questions, while hinting at the value of the arts centre. “After I got over the general intimidation of being a woman that wants to make music, being exposed to that stuff at Red Gate and having it visible to me made it seem like a thing that I could actually do.” Also playing Alleyfest is Shitlord Fuckerman, who opts for on-stage anonymity by choosing to be masked during performances. Despite this, the electronic musician has developed an intimacy with the Red Gate’s

many members since moving to the city from Comox a few years back. “It’s always been the big dog on campus of regular person-run spaces in Vancouver,” they explain in a separate phone call, praising the space for both its accessibility and inclusivity, “especially in a place like Vancouver where it’s increasingly difficult to keep community spaces open. It’s good that they’re so tenacious, opening a new space when the rent gets too high, or if the building gets knocked down so that a cafe/bistro can be put there instead.” Despite the Red Gate community’s successful

rebuild at its current spot, there’s no guarantee that this Hastings Street location will be home for much longer. The three-year lease that started up in 2013 has since expired, with the society currently functioning on a month-to-month lease with Chip Wilson’s Low Tide Properties. Talk of a more secure lease had been bandied about before, Yousefbigloo explains, but the real estate division of the Wilson empire suggested a significant increase to the current $7,500 a month rent (when reached by email, Low Tide representative David Ferguson declined to discuss numbers, citing confidentiality).

The loss of the space would be doubly damaging for Yousefbigloo, whose own Horses Records shop/ show space in the HastingsSunrise area is closing at the end of the month. “I guess I’ve tried many different models of trying to have space that we can share with the community,” she says, before adding with a sigh: “Every way you go about it, it’s hard when the main thing is real estate. Unless you somehow magically come across a space that you don’t have to pay rent at, it’s insanely hard in Vancouver.” Along with the 13 acts playing Alleyfest, the Saturday event will host various community vendors (“It’s not just us that are getting squeezed out of the area,” Yousefbigloo explains). A panel discussion about the future of Red Gate will also be held. There, they’ll be rolling out a multi-tiered program offering annual memberships that include price breaks for concerts, space in their rehearsal rooms, and the opportunity to sign on as a community organizer. That so many people continue to contribute to the long-running, independently-funded community space, despite its many hurdles, warms Yousefbigloo’s heart. “It’s easy to get jaded, but the nice thing about Red Gate is that it’s so fluid. You can come in and out whenever you want. The ideas stay fresh, exciting and hopeful, and that’s what you need in this city. Most people, if they go through three buildings in five years, they would not continue. There’s a reason [we’re doing this]. It’s really nice to see everybody putting in so much work.” W $ (22:-8:JI IW3:J N2W>: I64J +WIGL<W-F CG2- S=F 8LOQ VS?5 NQ WI 599 !H RWJI4P7JH

Dr. Seuss’ private world on display “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” –Dr. Seuss, Oh,The Places You’ll Go! Should you choose to steer yourself in the direction of viewing the private works of Dr. Seuss – the 20th century’s most celebrated imagination – you will find more than 40 surreal images and sculptures at the Pendulum Gallery in downtown Vancouver. Currently on view until July 30 is an engaging and

rare collection of works that Dr. Seuss, or rather Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904–1991) made his wife promise to not make public until after his death. The works (reproductions) provide a unique insight into the personal world of the famed author and artist. While he is most remembered for his playful and poetic tonguetwister children’s books, the undertones of his enchanting characters and whimsical worlds offered serious ideological explorations for children and adults alike.

12 W July 21 - July 27, 2016

His best-known works overshadow his early years as a cartoonist living in New York City, earning a humble wage creating clever cartoons for obscure humour magazines and The Saturday Evening Post from 1927–1941. During the Second World War, Dr. Seuss’ political and wartime cartoons spoke out against racism and anti-Semitism through his unique flavour of wit and sarcasm. Following the war, the writer and illustrator created stories about hope,

love, imagination, taking care of the environment and respecting others, all things that make our world a better place. Dr. Seuss’ boundless imagination shines through in this exceptional little exhibition of reproductions of his works, ranging from the 1930s to the 1980s. The Art of Dr. Seuss runs now to July 30 at the Pendulum Gallery in the lobby of the HSBC building at 885 West Georgia. Admission is free. PendulumGallery.bc.ca –Laura Busby, Vitamin Daily

Freshly baked rants @Sabrinarmf

In the first season of Rick Mercer Report, host Rick Mercer went up in the air with the legendary military aerobatics team, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds – and shortly after he returned to Earth, Mercer began to see a problem that he believed would spell the end of his fledgling show. “It’s an iconic aerobatics team, and I thought, ‘Uh-oh, there’s only one Snowbirds; what am I going to do next?’” Mercer told Reel People last month at CBCTV’s Fall Preview media junket. Back when Rick Mercer Report premiered in early 2004, Mercer was already an established television comedy force thanks to This Hour Has 22 Minutes, the CBC-TV comedy series he co-starred with Cathy Jones, Mary Walsh, and Greg Thomey that continues to air to this day (albeit with a different cast, save for Jones). But the weekly, half-hour Rick Mercer Report (or RMR, as he refers to it throughout the interview) included some new territory for Mercer: in addition to news parody, sketches, and satirical editorials, it also featured stories about fascinating people and places in Canada, shot entirely on location. Over the course of the first two years of RMR, as Mercer produced one delightful and funny Canadian story after another, he began to suspect that RMR’s “business model was broken, that I would run out of stories, and that would dictate the show’s demise.” Hindsight is hilarious, non? If you know RMR, you know that he’s yet to run out of stories, and the show is far from death. RMR is poised to begin its 14th season this fall. For Mercer – noted satirist, comedian, television personality, author, winner of 25 Gemini Awards, and cherished son of Newfoundland – RMR’s enduring magic revealed itself at the end of its second season. “I don’t have to be with the Snowbirds, and I don’t have to be with Rick Hansen who is famous around the world, and I don’t have to be with Leslie Feist or the Prime Minister of Canada,” says Mercer. “I can be with a lobster fisherman, and I like that just as much as any of them. And so if there’s 40 million Canadians, I’m pretty much convinced that I can get a story out of 20

Westender.com

million of them.” And, oh, the stories he’s told! Mercer is enthusiastic about everything he’s aired, but when pressed, he lists off some favourites: bungeejumping with the aforementioned Hansen; experiencing zero gravity; flying in a Lancaster Bomber; anything with Jann Arden; a trip to Rossland, BC, during its annual winter carnival (“They race homemade bobsleds down a street that is at an angle that could be described as a cliff: wildly dangerous, wildly entertaining, and a real good time”). If you want to know just who Mercer really, really is, look no further than Rick’s Rant. RMR’s short weekly segment finds Mercer expounding on a topic that irks him while he strides down Toronto alleyways and stares down the barrel of a camera. “That’s the part of the show that’s really me,” says Mercer. “I sit there Thursday night. I write the rant. Sometimes it’s obvious what I’m going to rant about, because there’s only one subject that week, and sometimes it’s very personal, and sometimes it’s about something that people haven’t heard about or are not talking about, and I think it’s something we should talk about more. There’s no rhyme or reason. I usually like them to have a few laughs, but sometimes the subject matter doesn’t lend itself to any laughs at all, and that’s unique for a comedy show that there’s a segment in the show that may intentionally have no laughs.” You can peruse a selection of past rants on Mercer’s web site: RickMercer.com. Unsurprisingly, Rick’s Rants often go viral. Mercer chuckles when he describes creating comedy for television in the age before the ’net – like “Talking to Americans,” a regular feature from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, in which Mercer spoke to Americans on the street and recorded them agreeing to ludicrous statements, many about Canadians (in one segment, he got US President George W. Bush to fail to correct him when Mercer referred to then-Prime Minister Jean Chretien as Jean Poutine). “I never felt bad about making these people look bad, because I always thought, ‘They’ll never see it, it’s only on the CBC, there’s no scenario in the world these people will ever see it,’” he says. “That was long before YouTube, because it exists on YouTube.” Speaking of which, you can behold the Dubya throwback on YouTube. Rick Mercer Report returns

for its 14th season in the final quarter of a year that has been resoundingly unfunny. So: what role can and should comedians and satirists like himself play during these fraught times? “I think comedians and satirists have the same role [in difficult times] that they always have: they’re commentators,” says Mercer. “They have to tell the truth as they see the truth.” ( .*,) #+$,+$ .+'%$! $+!-$&" to CBC-TV this fall. Industrial damage threatens Blueberry River’s way of life David Suzuki Science Matters

@DavidSuzuki

Industrial activity has profoundly affected the Blueberry River First Nations in northern BC. A recent Atlas of Cumulative Landscape Disturbance, by the First Nations, the David Suzuki Foundation and Ecotrust, found 73 per cent of the area inside its traditional territory is within 250 metres of an industrial disturbance and 85 per cent is within 500 metres. In other words, in much of the territory, which once supported healthy moose and caribou populations, it’s difficult if not impossible to walk half a kilometre before hitting a road, seismic line or other industrial infrastructure. Local caribou populations are threatened with extinction mainly because of habitat disturbance caused by industrial activity and ensuing changes to predatorprey dynamics. Scientific literature suggests that a natural functioning landscape with species including large predators requires a maximum density limit of 0.6 kilometres of linear disturbances – roads and seismic and transmission lines – per square kilometre.

forestry clearcut, a processing plant or a pipeline riser.” As a last resort, Blueberry River First Nations brought a civil claim against the BC government in 2015, asserting that cumulative industrial impacts in their territory have displaced and prevented people from carrying on traditional activities assured to them by the Crown under Treaty 8. The BC government responded to the report by saying it’s working on a cumulative effects framework. “We recognize the importance of assessing, monitoring and managing the cumulative effects of resource development,” BC Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister John Rustad wrote in a statement to the Dawson Creek Mirror. “Several attempts have been made to get Blueberry River First Nations involved in Northeast cumulative effects (management) programs.” This response is lacking on several levels. To start, it attempts to address an immediate ecological crisis by proposing that the community engage in ongoing, sometimes years-long processes. As Chief Yahey told the Mirror, “Despite raising these concerns directly with the premier and with provincial ministers, there has been

The report revealed Blueberry River has 2.88 kilometres of linear disturbance per square kilometre, totalling 110,300 kilometres – including 45,603 kilometres of seismic lines constructed over the past 10 years, nearly eight times the length of the Trans-Canada Highway from Vancouver to Halifax. Foundation science projects manager Rachel Plotkin recently toured the area with Chief Marvin Yahey and lands manager Norma Pyle. They showed her clearcuts in caribou calving grounds, hunting camps dissected by pipelines and giant oil-processing plants where elders once picked blueberries. “Development has extinguished our traditional way of life on wide areas of our land,”Yahey said, noting most of the damage has occurred over the past 30 years. Plotkin said travelling across the landscape was surreal. “From far back, it looked like a forest ecosystem, though dotted with farmers’ fields,” she said. “But no matter which road we drove down, we saw signs of the extraordinarily high levels of industrial activity – a pumpjack peeking from amid the trees, a sign on the road warning of a high-pressure pipeline hidden below, a sour gas flare above the treeline, a

no meaningful response to this critical threat. Instead, the province continues to approve major industrial undertakings in our territory, including major fracking operations and the Site C dam, willfully ignoring that each new approval brings our unique culture closer to extinction.” For the ministry in charge of reconciliation to respond defensively rather than open doors to better co-operation with Blueberry River is troubling. Although the government says it recognizes the importance of managing cumulative effects, the report’s map of industrial activity reveals that if government has a sustainable management regime, it’s broken. The people of Blueberry River recently shared with government their Land Stewardship Framework, which outlines a path to sustainable land management, protection and restoration. What they need from gov-

ernment now is immediate action to protect critical areas and to be included in decision-making. Process without interim measures can be a trap – a talk-andfrack situation. No one should have to put up with such high levels of destructive industrial activity, especially when they aren’t given a say in decisions. When governments have committed to reconciliation with First Nations they need to change their decision-making regimes and recognize that First Nations have the right and responsibility to make decisions about how their traditional territories are managed, now and into the future. Continued from page 7 The food isn’t casual when it comes to care or quality, but it feels a little more fun these days, especially since the lunch and brunch menus were launched. The latter was especially enjoyable. Pork rinds with chili sea salt ($4) might not be your average starter, but it works oh, so well. It was followed by skirt steak and poached eggs with bone marrow hollandaise and roesti cubes that my 10-yearold refused to share. My own shakshuka ($14) was stellar. If you aren’t familiar with shakshuka, this is an Israeli dish of baked eggs in a spicy tomato sauce with a little fresh cheese, vegetables and herbs. Olo’s version features charmoula and chickpeas, as well as toast, which comes in handy when you need to mop up the leftover sauce. The menu changes often, but see if you can snag the lamb rack at dinner. The housemade gnocchi are pillowy and perfect for dipping in the lamb-based sauce. But like most of you, I am trekking on, hitting up social gatherings and whatever other summer activities I usually get into. Taking on more things on the daily, however, means losing energy at times and dragging myself, sometimes in rain boots, through my day. Being tired or low-energy is a symptom that most of us can relate to at one point or another. If your fatigue is constant, then there could be an underlying medical condition there that requires looking into, but if you know that it’s just the drags of life and the bummer weather we are having, or you are just simply putting too much on your plate, then there could be immediate hope in your near future. Low energy is such a common complaint that it’s hard to know what’s really at the root of it.The first thing I tend to examine is food: what are you eating on a regular basis? Your diet will directly affect your energy and mood. Boost

your energy, and your mood will most likely change for the better. Conversely, elevate your mood and you may see great changes in your energy levels. Sugar imbalances are known to be a major factor in mood, depression, energy and health, in general. And refined foods are directly linked to mood imbalances – when we eat refined foods like sugar products, etc., it spikes our blood sugar levels and then we have a crash a couple of hours later, leaving us low-energy, moody and craving more refined carbs. After eating more, the cycle of sugar highs and lows starts all over again. This can eventually lead to more serious problems, including diabetes. Eating complex carbs and whole foods will help to stabilize your blood sugars throughout the day, avoiding the highs and lows and giving you ample nutrients for energy throughout the day. Here are some great energy sources you can add to your culinary repertoire.

NUTS & SEEDS

Almonds, cashews and hazelnuts are all high in magnesium, which plays a major role in converting sugar into energy, and are also filled with fiber to keep your blood sugar levels even. Keep a bag at your desk and just a handful at 3PM will give you longer

lasting energy than a cup of coffee ever will.

KALE

Probably no surprise here, especially if you are already kale head.To get the most energy boosting benefits from this super veggie, ensure you cook as it’s easier for your body to digest and absorb all those important nutrients.

LENTILS

Help stabilize blood glucose levels and prevent those midafternoon sugar crashes by adding some loving lentils, or even chickpeas or kidney beans. But you don’t need to be low on energy to enjoy this delicious legume!

COCONUT

Coconut consists of a type of fat that is turned into energy quickly and efficiently. Coconut is utilized by the body to actually produce energy rather than store it as fat.

SLEEP

Maybe you just need more sleep? Don’t underestimate the power of a good rest or even a power nap. Lack of rest has been known to decrease mental alertness and energy levels. Get your naps in whenever you can and catch those 7-8 hours a night as often as you can! But beware oversleeping can also bring on feelings of sluggishness and low energy. W

Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay I’ve recently moved to the USA from Australia for work on a four-month contract. Before leaving for this trip I unsuccessfully tried to break up with my boyfriend of five years. He just refused to accept that we would not be together when I returned. He begged for us to stay together, just so upset, so I caved. I’ve been in New York having a great time meeting lots of interesting people and feel deep down that I cannot continue being in a relationship with my boyfriend back in Australia. I feel like breaking up with someone over the phone is disrespectful and I would rather wait to do it in person but I still have months away and want to enjoy my time here being free of any guilt. Is it acceptable to end a serious relationship on the phone in this circumstance or should I tough it out and wait to do it face to face? Obviously breaking up with someone over the phone that you have been

Ask Mish: Breaking up is hard to do with for half a decade is some cowardly scum shit, but in this case, what choice do you have? You are in New York and your boyfriend is way back home in the sunny land of beautiful criminals. You got to get on the horn and do it. Long distance relationships are rough. I’ve been in a few and always ended up having affairs on the sly. I was young, selfish and dumb like most 20-something’s are and I’m sure my boyfriend was back at home doing the same. Monogamy doesn’t work when you stick an ocean between you and your mate for four months. What is the point of lying to one another? What is the point of pretending? We hang on because the safety net feels good. That is, unless it doesn’t. You are in NewYork – the gorgeous, stinking, city filled with single men who are ready to plow and break your heart. You owe it to yourself to experience this without the string still attached to your Australian boyfriend. It’s not fair for you to drag him along while you swipe right to every hot guy in Brooklyn. The good news is that

Legumes are known to provide long-lasting energy. iStock photo

breaking up on the phone means that he will have four months to get on with his life without the shadow of you looming around his hometown. He can’t bump into you. He can’t show up at your apartment at night drunk and screaming. From his perspective, this is kind of the best situation. The most horrible thing about the ego bruise of being dumped is knowing you might run into your ex, and even worse, when and if you do, they could have some new dish hanging off their arm.The most important and mature thing you can do after a break-up is stay the fuck away from one another for at least six months. This usually means that one person forfeits parties that involve your common friends and all the places you would frequent together. You are already a million miles away. This step is done. The conversation is going to be brutal. Breaking-up always is, but the longer you leave this the worse you are going to feel as your eyes wander and you start sleeping with New York’s finest mixologists in man buns. (But, please don’t. Man buns are a blow

dryer on your pussy.) Have a strong cocktail, sit down in a quiet room, and call your boyfriend. Judging by his reaction when you tried to do this before you left, he is not going to give up easy. You are going to have to have your facts straight, a solid list of points that prove why you and he need to break up, and when all else fails, “I am not in love with you anymore” is the point no sane person can argue. People love to sugar coat when we dump someone because it softens the blow, but all this does is leave the dumped with lingering questions that only you can answer. And they will ask. They will try to coddle the ego bruise. Be honest. Sugar coating is for babies and a baby you are not. People break-up. That is a big “duh” in life. Just because it is over does not mean you didn’t appreciate and love the time you had together. Remind him of this. You got this. W

You now have more luxuriant access to divine luck than you’ve had in a long time. For the foreseeable future, you could be able to induce semi-miraculous twists of fate that might normally be beyond your capacities. But here’s a caveat: The good fortune swirling in your vicinity may be odd or irregular or hard-to-understand. To harvest it, you will have to expand your ideas about what constitutes good fortune. It may bestow powers you didn’t even realize it was possible to have. For example, what if you temporarily have an acute talent for gravitating toward situations where smart love is in full play?

A directory published by the US Department of Labor says that my gig as an astrologer shares a category with jugglers, rodeo clowns, acrobats, carnival barkers, and stuntpersons. Am I, therefore, just a charming buffoon? An amusing goofball who provides diversion from life’s serious matters? I’m fine with that. I may prefer to regard myself as a sly oracle inflamed with holy madness, but the service I provide is probably more effective if my ego doesn’t get the specific glory it yearns for. In this way, I have certain resemblances to the Taurus tribe during the next four weeks. Is it OK if you achieve success without receiving all of the credit you think you deserve?

Over the course of a 57-year career, Japanese movie director Akira Kurosawa won 78 major awards for his work, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oscars. Among the filmmakers who’ve named him as an inspirational influence are heavyweights like Ingmar Bergman, Werner Herzog, Bernardo Bertolucci, Robert Altman, Francis Ford Coppola, and Martin Scorsese. But Kurosawa wasn’t too haughty to create lighter fare. At age 86, he departed from his epic dramas to create a 30-second commercial for a yogurt drink. Did that compromise his artistic integrity? I say no. Even a genius can’t be expected to create non-stop masterpieces. Be inspired by Kurosawa, Gemini. In the coming weeks, give your best to even the most modest projects.

Capricorns may be the hardest workers of the zodiac, and Tauruses the most dogged. But in the coming weeks, I suspect you Cancerians will be the smartest workers. You will efficiently surmise the precise nature of the tasks at hand, and do what’s necessary to accomplish them. There’ll be no false starts or reliance on iffy data or slapdash trial-and-error experiments. You’ll have a light touch as you find innovative short cuts that produce better results than would be possible via the grind-it-out approach.

My friend’s 12-year-old daughter Brianna got a “B” on her summer school math test. She might have earned an “A” if it weren’t for a problem her teacher had with some of her work. “You got the right answer by making two mistakes that happened to cancel each other out,” he wrote on her paper next to question seven. I suspect you will soon have a similar experience. Leo. But the difference between you and Brianna is that I’m giving you an “A.” All that matters in the end is that you succeed. I don’t care if your strategy is a bit funky.

Have you ever fantasized about being a different gender or race or astrological sign? Do you suspect it might be fun and liberating to completely change your wardrobe or your hairstyle or your body language? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to experiment with these variables, and with any others that would enable you to play with your identity and mutate your selfimage. You have a cosmic exemption from imitating what you have done in the past. In this spirit, feel free to read all the other signs’ horoscopes, and act on the one you like best. Your word of power is “shapeshifter.”

The Golden Goose Award is given annually to “scientists whose work may have been considered silly, odd, or obscure when first conducted,” but which ultimately produced dramatic advances. Entomologists Raymond Bushland and Edward Knipling were this year’s winners. More than 60 years ago they started tinkering with the sex life of the screwworm fly in an effort to stop the pest from killing livestock and wildlife throughout the American South. At first their ideas were laughed at, even ridiculed. In time they were lauded for their pioneering breakthroughs. I suspect you’ll be blessed with a vindication of your own in the coming weeks, Libra. It may not be as monumental as Bushland’s and Knipling’s, but I bet it’ll be deeply meaningful for you.

I hope it doesn’t sound too paradoxical when I urge you to intensify your commitment to relaxation. I will love it, and more importantly your guardian angel will love it, if you become a fierce devotee of slowing down and chilling out. Get looser and cozier and more spacious, damn it! Snuggle more. Cut back on overthinking and trying too hard. Vow to become a high master of the mystic art of I-don’t-give-af*ck. It’s your sacred duty to steal more slack from the soul-anesthetizing grind.

I regularly travel back through time from the year 2036 so as to be here with you. It’s tough to be away from the thrilling transformations that are underway there. But it’s in a good cause. The bedraggled era that you live in needs frequent doses of the vigorous optimism that’s so widespread in 2036, and I’m happy to disseminate it. Why am I confessing this? Because I suspect you now have an extra talent for gazing into the unknown and exploring undiscovered possibilities. You also have an unprecedented power to set definite intentions about the life you want to be living in the future. Who will you be five years from today? Ten years? Twenty years? Be brave. Be visionary. Be precise.

Here’s one strategy you could pursue, I guess: You could spank the Devil with a feather duster as you try to coax him to promise that he will never again trick you with a bogus temptation. But I don’t think that would work, frankly. It may have minor shock value, in which case the Devil might leave you in peace for a short time. Here’s what I suggest instead: Work at raising your discernment so high that you can quickly identify, in the future, which temptations will deliver you unto evil confusion, and which will feed and hone your most noble desires.

After a cool, dry period, you’ll soon be slipping into a hot, wet phase. The reasonable explanations that generated so much apathy are about to get turned inside-out. The seemingly good excuses that provided cover for your timidity will be exposed as impractical lies. Are you ready for your passion to roar back into fashion? Will you know what to do when suppressed yearnings erupt and the chemicals of love start rampaging through your soft, warm animal body? I hereby warn you about the oncoming surge of weird delight – and sing “Hallelujah!” for the revelatory fun it will bring.

I’m composing your horoscope on my iPhone after midnight on a crowded bus that’s crammed with sweaty revelers. We’re being transported back to civilization from a rural hideaway where we spent the last 12 hours at a raging party. I still feel ecstatic from the recent bacchanal, but the ride is uncomfortable. I’m pinned against a window by a sleepy, drunken dude who’s not in full control of his body. But do I allow my predicament to interfere with my holy meditation on your destiny? I do not – just as I trust you will keep stoking the fires of your own inspiration in the face of comparable irritations. You have been on a hot streak, my dear. Don’t let anything tamp it down!
