Re:“The Growler Guide to Calgary,” Aug. 4, 2016 Thanks for the nice writeup. Just a small point, Edmonton is the capital [of Alberta], not Calgary. An historic oversight, I agree, but reality none the less. You missed Wild Rose which had a great tasting room, recently transitioned to a full time pub as production expanded elsewhere. Also, Alberta has the most open beer market in Canada which is on full display as you move around venues and private liquor stores. Now if only we had brew on site stores. Re: the bad rep, guess it works both ways, unfortunately. I enjoy visiting Vancouver, glad you enjoyed visiting here. Come again anytime. Now where can one get a “Make Beer Great Again” cap? —PM Selfie Editor’s note: Thanks for the feedback. The writer’s intention was to paint Calgary as a Prairie “cultural capital” rather than a geographic one. However, we can see how the wording could be misconstrued. And the hats can be purchased at Dandy Brewing Co. in Calgary. Re:“C’mon get happy! I would sincerely like to thank the couple in the white car who after the movie at The Harmony Arts Festival helped me start my car Friday evening [July 29]. It was late and dark and I was on a deserted street next to John Lawson Park in West Vancouver. Not only did this wonderful couple phone BCAA on my behalf, but when they found that the wait time was 90 minutes, they actually drove to an all-night gas station and purchased a booster kit. They then drove back to my car and boosted my battery. I will never forget their kindness and would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart. We often hear that Vancouver is a cold and unfriendly City. However couples like this very much refute this myth. Hopefully I will be able to perform a similar random act of kindness some day.Thank you for posting this Rave. —Johanna Hickey

YOUR CITY CITY SHORTS // METRO VANCOUVER HOME SALES PLUNGE IN JULY

A nostalgic moment from Odyssey Imports on Granville Street circa 1986, courtesy of Brian Fleming and the Odyssey Imports (Vancouver) Facebook group. Contributed photo

Remembering Record Store Row Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown

@GrantLawrence

Just like that, the sun has set on the record store boom in Hastings-Sunrise. Well, boom might be a stretch, but when two independent record stores open within a block from each other, it’s pretty exciting for neighbourhood audiofiles. Alas, Horses Records closed on July 29, and Hits and Misses will permanently close its doors by summer’s end. The good news is there’s still plenty of excellent record stores to pick through in Vancouver, but the sudden double-closure took me back to Vancouver’s music shopping glory years, when a strip of record stores dominated downtown Seymour Street. The records started spinning on Seymour back in 1970, when the famously low-priced music emporium known as A&B Sound moved into 556 Seymour. Within a few years, more record stores followed: first was Collectors RPM, a new and used shop with a Beatles “museum” upstairs. The wonderfully grouchy staff at Track Records arrived in 1986, at one point having two locations open in the same block. Odyssey Imports joined Seymour’s platter party a year later, blasting their new wave Brit pop sounds after relocating from Granville Street. By 1990, “Record Row” had reached full volume. From the top of the hill at Seymour and Dunsmuir,

Westender.com

heading north to Pender, the record stores were, in order, Sam the Record Man, A&B Sound, Track Records, Odyssey Imports, A&A Records and Tapes, and Collectors RPM. You could easily spend an entire day flipping from one shop to the next, while spending your entire paycheque on music. That’s exactly what I did, busing downtown every weekend throughout my musical coming of age, which conveniently coincided with all six stores being open for business. Despite the often surlyon-the-surface staff, Track Records was by far my favourite. They had a sprawling selection of garage rock, rockabilly, punk, and rock ‘n’ roll vinyl, and were very supportive of the local music scene and young bands like mine. To have your gig poster in a prime space in the window of Track Records was coveted rock ‘n’ roll real estate. Surprisingly, the once gloriously rockin’ Record Row became a musical Death Row within a short matter of years. The first to pull the plug was A&A Records and Tapes at the corner of Seymour and Pender, when their corporate office abruptly declared bankruptcy in 1991. Collectors RPM also spun out in the early 1990s, and the new wave opus ended for Odyssey Imports. Track Records closed on Labour Day weekend 1997, after a supposed falling out between owners. One of them, Dale Wiese, opened the much smaller Noize to Go a few doors down. With its narrow, double-

decker location at 568 Seymour, Sam the Record Man not only employed dozens of local musicians, but was also very supportive of the booming 1990s Vancouver indie scene. Sam slammed the door in 2000, when the national chain shattered like a 78 dropped onto a concrete floor. A&B Sound, the emporium that started it all, finally shuttered its Seymour Street store in 2008. The tiny Noize to Go was Seymour Street’s last remaining record store. It closed in 2009, outlasting A&B Sound by a few months. For the chain stores, everything from too-rapid national expansion, to CD burning, to file sharing was blamed for their equally rapid extinction. For the independents like Track and Noize, it was rising downtown rents, renovictions, and disinterested E.S.L. students. Seymour Street’s Record Row may be an ear-ringing memory of a past era, and vinyl sadly couldn’t find the groove most recently in Hastings-Sunrise, but as mentioned, many fine record stores remain scattered throughout our city: Noize is now in Chinatown, Red Cat Records and Neptoon Records dominate Main Street, Studio Records and Beat Street are downtown, Highlife and Audiopile are on the Drive, and the mighty Zulu Records, at 35 years and counting, is forever in Kits. Support your local record store, rock on Vancouver, and let’s raise a can of Phillips Analogue 78 Kolsch to remember those that forged the vinyl frontier. W

Home sales in Metro Vancouver fell 18.9 per cent in July, compared with the same month a year ago, and 26.7 per cent, compared with June, according to statistics that the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver released Aug.3. Prices, however, continued to rise. A benchmark home in the region is now $930,400, or 32.6 per cent more than a year ago. That price is 1.4 per cent more than the $917,800 benchmark price in June. It was low sales across the region, however, that has broken a longtime trend. This is the first time since January, when 2,519 sales closed, that fewer than 4,000 homes were sold in the region, given that a mere 3,978 sales transacted during what is supposed to be the prime sales month of July. The sluggish sales may have stemmed in part from the BC government’s July 25 announcement that foreign home buyers would have to pay a 15 per cent

Dan Toulgoet photo tax, starting Aug. 2, when they buy a home in Metro Vancouver. Many in the industry say that announcement put a chill in the market. REBGV president Dan Morrison, however, said that home sale activity showed some moderating signs in late June and that this sentiment carried into the earlier part of July. “We’ll wait and watch over the next few months to see if this marks the return of more normal market trends,” he said. The number of listed properties for sale is also down – 27.4 per cent to 8,351, compared to July 2015, although listings are up 6.9 per cent compared with June. The market, however, is still considered a seller’s market given that the salesto-active-listings ratio for July 2016 is 38.6 per cent.

All classes of residential real estate bore the same basic trend of fewer sales, a slight price increase, compared with June, and a large price increase when compared with last July. Sales for detached homes fell 30.9 per cent in July, compared with the same month a year ago, and the benchmark price increased 38 per cent during the same two time periods, to $1,578,300. Apartment properties’ sales fell 7.3 per cent, compared with July 2015, while prices increased 27.4 per cent, to $510,600, in the same two time periods. Attached properties, such as duplexes, had a sales dip of 20.7 per cent in July, compared with a year ago. Prices for those homes were up 29.4 per cent, during the same two time periods, to $669.000. –Glen Korstrom, Business inVancouver

VANCOUVER QUEER FILM FESTIVAL

Queer Film Fest fêtes icons Festival gala centres on the men behind Madonna’s infamous ‘Truth or Dare’ doc KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

Kevin Stea almost didn’t make the cut for Madonna’s iconic 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour. At the final audition, the talented freestyler – who had responded to an ad looking for “fierce” male dancers – was leaving everything he had on the dance floor, but the Material Girl was too wrapped up in talking to even watch. He caught the eye of her brother, Christopher, however, who hired him as associate choreographer for her “Vogue” video and catapulted him into Madonna’s world. Fast forward two-and-ahalf-decades later, and Stea is one of six surviving dancers featured in Strike a Pose, an introspective new documentary by Dutch filmmakers Reijer Zwaan and Ester Gould that focuses on the men – six gay, one straight – whose lives were forever changed by the tour.

While Blond Ambition and the subsequent film, Truth or Dare – her cult-classic blackand-white doc that captured the titillating action off stage – shocked the world with their barrier-breaking provocations around sexuality, religion and homosexuality, Strike a Pose does not linger on Madonna. Rather, in examining the lives of the men who made voguing mainstream – Luis Camacho, Oliver Crumes, Salim “Slam” Gauwloos, Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza, Kevin Stea, Gabriel Trupin (who lost his life to complications from AIDS in 1995) and Carlton Wilborn – the film focuses its narrative on the fallout of the tour and the painful secrets that stayed hidden, even as the young men expressed themselves to the world. Trupin, in particular, reluctantly found himself at the centre of Truth or Dare’s most controversial (and influential) moment: a passionate, popculture same-sex kiss. And his passing had a profound effect on the group, who were mostly in their early 20s at the time. “It was a different time when we made [Truth or Dare]. It really was,” says Stea, who didn’t know his friend was ill until after his death.

“There was danger. There was a lot at risk, and it wasn’t just about HIV/AIDS. Just being gay in the entertainment industry with the press ready to pounce on anybody. If you said anything or declared anything – affirmed people’s suspicions you were gay – you risked your entire career. And then if you talk about HIV and AIDS...” he trails off. “That was just an absolute taboo. You were a pariah.” For Stea, who (along with Trupin and Crumes) went through an emotionally difficult lawsuit with Madonna after the tour, watching Strike a Pose has been cathartic – a chance to reflect on his life 25 years later, and actually acknowledge the impact their “naiveté” and openness had on the LGBTQ community around the world. “I’ve never really looked back on my body of work and thought, ‘Wow, I’ve done work that has impacted people or made a difference for people. [...] Because I always thought it was about the artist I was working for and had nothing to do with my work – it’s their message not mine,” says Stea.

into conversations surrounding both the Black Lives Matter and Trans Lives Matter movements. “[The festival] is a chance to look back at some of the major issues that, as a community, we’ve been tackling over the last 30 years,” says festival artistic director Shana Myara, “with a lens to looking to the future, to what are we still doing? We know that there is so much left to do.” With more than 100 films from 48 countries, the Queer Film Festival is second only to the Vancouver International Film Festival in size and scope, and pulls reels in from many of the same venerable bodies – Sundance, Cannes, TIFF, etc. – as its hefty counterpart. The films are first selected on their strengths by a 30-person screening committee, and then organized into categories. This year, queer iconoclasts, like the men of Strike a Pose, have emerged as a central theme, backed by films like In Particular, barbara findlay, about the life of the Vancouver activist and human rights lawyer, and Major!, about American social justice and Stonewall icon Miss Major Griffin-Gracy.

“But now it has me really view everything I’ve done and look at it with a different perspective; one that allows me more support and confidence for myself.” The film is being presented on Aug. 17 as the centerpiece gala screening of this year’s Vancouver’s Queer Film Festival (taking place Aug. 11-21 at venues across the city). Stea and Gutierez will be in Vancouver for the screening – taking part in a post-show Q&A, as well as performing an improvisational routine during Spacemelt, the gala’s genre-bending after-party. Strike a Pose is also surrounded by critically acclaimed films that run the gamut: Waiting for B chronicles the superfans who camped out for two months in a ticket line to see Beyoncé perform in Brazil; Two Soft Things,Two Hard Things follows what happens when a remote Arctic community decides to hold an LGBTQ celebration; meanwhile the closing gala highlight, Kiki, picks up where the seminal LGBTQ film Paris is Burning left off, revisiting NewYork’s voguing balls and segueing

Meanwhile, Out In Schools, a long-standing educational arm of the festival, expands its work promoting safe, inclusive school communities with School’s OUT, a series of age-appropriate films geared towards youth. Myara explains that roughly 75 per cent of the films inVQFF are rated PG or 14A, making the festival largely accessible to teens, school groups, allies and families. For its 28th year,VQFF has also amped up its production abilities, securing $30,000 in funding forTroublemakers, a project that connected aspiring ReelYouth filmmakers with local changemakers to create 10 new short documentaries. “We called the whole thing Troublemakers in a tonguein-cheek- way, because each of these people has had to cause “trouble” to make positive impact in their community,” says Myara. “Some of their journeys were harrowing and complex, and this project is meant to thank them and document the work that they’ve done.” This year’s festival is also dedicated in its entirety to the victims of the Orlando shooting, with a particular focus on the communities most affected by the violence.

“We pay special attention to understanding that the people targeted in Orlando were Latinx, black,” says Myara. “They were in a safe space where they thought they could celebrate with like-minded and other out people. And it was particularly affecting for everyone who understands intersectionality,” she continues. “At the festival we talk a lot about our intersectional focus, and that means that we don’t stop at issues like gay marriage. What we have to look to next is, what are the stories that affect the diversity of our community? The lived experiences of a black transgender woman are going to be very different from those of someone who came out and is a cisgender Caucasian male. So how do we share the stories that create understanding across the differences that exist within the LGBT community?” W 5 4/6 Vancouver Queer Film Festival 2+:0 328; #+1& ??)>?& "82 0/8=) .,;60 ':7 (89'.,8:0% *,0,. $+662",(;"60.,*'(& 9'& "82 ;826 =,./ Kevin Stea% /6'7 8:(,:6 .8 -60.6:762&98; 382 8+2 6<.6:767 $!#&

Whether you’re in the mood to laugh or cry, ruminate on social injustices or celebrate queer victories, feel all the romantic feels or lose yourself in a solid sci-fi thriller, the 28th Vancouver Queer Film Festival (VQFF) has got you covered. With nearly 70 narrative features, documentaries, and shorts on the schedule, VQFF is second only to the juggernaut Vancouver International Film Festival when it comes to scale and scope. It’s pretty difficult to make a wrong choice when plotting out your VQFF experience, but if you need some entry points, Reel People serves up this list of must-see VQFF films – ’cause we’re cool like that.

IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY

Shortly after Joella Cabalu’s brother Jay came out to their kin, the siblings learned that at least six other members of their deeply religious Filipino family were gay, lesbian, or gender-fluid. “The most alarming comment was that our ancestors sinned so much that our blood was cursed, which is why there were so many gay people in our family,” the Vancouver director says in a voiceover early on in her feature-length documentary debut. And so the siblings journeyed from Vancouver to California and then the Philippines to engage with their queer relatives and ask them how they navigate family, culture,

loss, love, and Catholicism. It Runs in the Family is a surprising, illuminative, and ultimately heartening look into a single family. 9pm, Aug. 16, International Village Cinemas

“THE COAST IS QUEER”

“The Coast is Queer” is one of the most highly anticipated VQFF programs every year, with good reason: The bill boasts a wildly eclectic selection of short films directed by homegrown filmmakers, spanning genres and styles and POVs. This year’s crop of 13 films range from sci-fi to animation to rom-com to biting social commentary. Highlights include 10579km: A Queer Journey from Damascus to Vancouver, in which recently arrived Syrian refugee and activist Danny Ramadan shares his experience as a newcomer and delves into racism and privilege within the local queer community; Elisha Lim’s 100 Crushes Chapter 6:They, a claymation monologue about a friend’s decision to use the genderneutral pronoun “they”; The Promise by Jason Karman, a gorgeous short wherein two men dance in an open field, jumping from reality to dream as each follows his own path; and Collider, which finds the eternally daring and evocative Ali Liebert (The Devout, Bomb Girls) shifting into parallel dimensions in search of her deceased partner. 8:45pm, Aug. 13, SFU GCA

In Alliance is part of the Changemakers series at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival, which spotlights the work of local trans activists. Contributed photo

Continued from page 5 As Shane tries to deal with the loss of his sister, he is faced with the choice between his family and his future, while also trying to be true to himself. Martin, a young Mohawk actor from Six Nations in Ontario, the largest First Nations reserve in Canada, shines in his debut performance – as does Vancouver’s Mary Galloway (Ariel Unraveling) as Shane’s girlfriend Tara, a role that garnered her a Leo nomination. Fire Song, the debut feature from writer/ director Adam Garnet Jones, premiered to rave reviews at last year’s TIFF and won two audience awards on the festival circuit. 5pm, Aug. 18, International Village Cinemas

IN ALLIANCE

The important work of Vancouver’s Trans Alliance Society (TAS) takes centre stage in In Alliance, a documentary short by Christine Lord.TAS has long fought for the removal of gender markers from birth certificates, as well as for human rights code protections for transgender

people. We learn about TAS and its impact via Morgane Oger,TAS’ chair and a trans mom, as she marches in the Pride parade, seeks solitude on a boat, and expounds on what a block of text in the film describes as her “ongoing quest to normalize transgender.”The compelling short is part of a program entitled “Changemakers” spotlighting the work of local trans activists. The other moving and inspiring films in the showcase include Handsome and Majestic – about Milan, a transgender teen in Prince George whose courage in the face of adversity offers lessons in hope, survival, and connection – and To be a Man, in which audiences meet the charismatic Levi in his first year, outwardly, as a man.The filmmakers will be in attendance for a postscreening discussion. 7pm, Aug. 13, SFU CGA

STRIKE A POSE

Madonna’s 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour is the stuff of legend – as anyone who has viewed the cultfavourite 1991 documentary Madonna:Truth or Dare can attest – and one of the many

factors that intersected to make that particular tour next-level was the dancers: a troupe of fierce and astoundingly talented (mostly) gay men, many of whom had reigned in the NYC underground dance scene before Madonna scooped them up for an experience unlike any other.Twenty-five years later, six of the dancers remain, their collective stories at turns illuminating and heartbreaking. Documentarian Ester Gould (Shout) and co-director Reijer Zwaan bring a touching, intimate tale of a group of men who flew very close to a brightly shining but scorching star. 6:30pm, Aug. 17,Vancouver Playhouse (Post-film Q&A with Blonde Ambition World Tour dancers); 2:30pm, Aug. 19, International Village Cinemas. % ;@/ &-?@58432=</# *=//# (>:7 (/!?><8: #=4! 0=")''+&' 8? <8#>2=!58432=</# </4=/!. >43:=1>4" ?@/58432=</# ,:86@2=!/. 94?/#48?>248:5>::8"/. MUSIC & FASHION Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope in ABC’s Scandal. ABC/ Greg Gayne photo

‘No Fun City’ no more EastVan’s Burger Fest a meaty feast for the ears

ALLAN MACINNIS @westendervan

Get the look: Olivia Pope ger, more determined, and wears bright red, orange, and royal blue.” What we really love is that while the palette has changed, the shapes and styles have stayed the same – classic, elegant pieces like wool coats and shift dresses from designers such as Max Mara and Oscar De La Renta. That means the transition was believable and gentle, giving unintimidating fashion inspiration for those of us who tend to stick to black-and-white neutrals ourselves.

Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor

Woe is us! Kerry Washington’s pregnancy means that instead of launching in September, season 6 of Scandal won’t air till 2017. That means that we have to wait frickin’ months to catch up with Olivia, Jake and Fitz. Thankfully, there are five seasons to re-watch and indulge in our favourite pursuit: Ogling Olivia’s wardrobe. Last season, Olivia evolved her style and her previous neutral palette gave way to colour and print. Scandal’s costume designer Lyn Paolo told US InStyle magazine: “Shonda Rhimes, in her brilliance, wrote a brand-new Olivia. This Olivia is stron-

Burger Fest 2016 has little to do with burgers. Sure, burgers will be available, provided by Vera’s and the Heatley in both beefy and vegetarian options. But the all-day event – taking place on Aug. 13 at the Waldorf – is really all about music. Specifically, bone-crunching, facemelting metal: thrash, doom, stoner, sludge, and permutations of all the above, with five visiting guests and a staggering 13 local metal acts proving just how vital the Vancouver heavy music scene is. Funny, because it seems like just a few years ago, there was a definite shortage of heavy music in Vancouver. As the city shifted priorities in the run-up to the 2010 Olympics, the tag “No Fun City” seemed apt, and even was the title of a documentary about venue closures and challenges to Vancouverites wanting to put on shows. Mitch Ray, of Art Signified, who is co-promoting the festival, agrees. “That was around the time when Pub 340 closed down, and when the Cobalt went through a change,” he remembers. “Those were definitely the two go-to heavy music venues in the town.” Then-Cobalt impresario wendythirteen’s heartwrenching ordeal, leading up to her being shown the door, is figured prominently in the No Fun City doc, as are the closures of the Emergency Room and the Sweatshop. They weren’t the only local music venues to bite the dust at that time, either. “There was a bit of a clean-

Brian Sepanzyk of Waingro artfully interprets our Burger Fest photo request. Contributed photo ing up, for the sake of the optics of it,” Ray remembers. “When Pub 340 stopped putting on live shows,” – leaving Ray struggling to find a venue for an early gig he promoted – “it was because of noise; because of that nice new apartment complex at the Woodwards’ building. A grimy little hole-in-the-wall metal bar down the street from new apartments isn’t exactly good for public perception, depending on who you ask.” Rob Zawistowski of Astrakhan, one of the local bands playing Burger Fest, adds that “another really big thing is promoters. For quite a while, there were no really legitimate artist-focused promoters. With the growth of the metal scene, and some local bands getting signed and getting a little bit of support, there’s emerged a bigger interest on the promoters’ side to focus on artists. You have companies like Art Signified, what Chris Dyck was doing with Nothing is Heavy, and now also Modified Ghost.” Add festivals like this one, and increased international interest in Vancouver metal, and you see the music scene being given “a huge boost” in Vancouver. “And I think the other thing is, people are

having fun at shows and going out more!” Astrakhan’s new LP, Reward in Purpose, is a testament to how exciting a genre metal can be – as psychedelic and proggy as it is heavy. The title, Zawistowski explains, is “related to the reasons why we play music. The content is based on our life philosophies and a thoughtfulness in general to how we approach society and music. ‘Reward in purpose’ is basically saying there’s a joy and a benefit that you get from the act of doing something that you’re passionate about, rather than trying to attain an end goal.” By virtue of it not being so end-driven, Zawistowski thinks there’s a “purity in metal” that he finds inspiring. “Metal bands are not trying to get platinum records or get some crazy fame or money,” he says. “They’re doing it for a different motive, you know?” Another especially exciting local band on the bill isWaingro, named for the treacherous sleazeball in Michael Mann’s crime thriller Heat. Guitarist/ vocalist Brian Sepanzyk maybe isn’t quite as overtly philosophical as Zawistowski; he says that he startedWaingro out of the desire to have fun,

without “thinking about it too much: you like the riff, and you just play.” Still, there’s a huge charm to his Dimebag-meetsStevie RayVaughan approach, which combines driving thrash riffage with bluesy, tuneful stoner-metal solos that set your synapses tingling. The name ofWaingro’s new album, Mt. Hood, comes from Sepanzyk’s internet browsing. “The first time I saw it, I was like, ‘Holy fuck, that’s a wicked name for a mountain.’ It’s so ominous!”Then he learned that Mt. Hood was used as a location for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which locked it. Waingro has played two out of three Burger Fests since Art Signified got involved three years ago. Astrakhan, meanwhile, has played all three fests since then, and even cast Mitch Ray in their video for “Turgid Waters,” where he appears as a culty Shoko Asahara lookalike, until a member of the band bashes him in the head with a rock. So, how did an all-day metal show get the name Burger Fest, anyhow? Ray explains that the answer lies in the fests origins, with co-promoter Scott Bartlett, of Black River Productions. “He’s the one who started Burger Fest six years ago, and it was originally just a backyard barbecue. It started as an outlet for his friend’s bands to have a fun summer party, and it kind of just developed.” It’s a bit weird – especially with Taco Fest and Victoria’s Shake! Fest – to have a metal festival named after a foodstuff, isn’t it? Ray nods. “We’re actually changing the name next year for that reason!” W

Two summer pop-ups to try before they’re gone Anya Levykh Nosh

@FoodgirlFriday Pop-ups are nothing new these days. They range from restaurants and wine bars to clothing and soap stores. Throw a rock and you’ll likely hit a rock-collecting pop-up. That being said, there is some golden wheat among the chaff, and here are a couple new pop-ups that you’ll want to visit before they close up their short-term shops.

ORCHARD & THE SEA

By day, it’s popular café The Birds and the Beets. By night, it’s the first of its kind in Vancouver—a craft cider bar. The project is a collaboration between chef Jefferson Alvarez and Txotx (pro-

nounced “cho-ch”) Imports. The latter specializes in cider, beer, wine and spirits from the Basque region. The name, in fact, refers to the act of drinking cider from a tapped barrel, as well as being a popular toast. The focus here is on the ciders, both local and imported, with small plates crafted by Alvarez. On a recent visit, those small plates ($5-$8) included chorizo and potatoes, baked glutenfree chicken drumsticks with spicy aioli, tomato and anchovy salad, Manchego cheese with quince paste, as well as one large platter ($35) of txuleton, a traditional Basque ribeye steak that weighs in at a full pound. Here, the sliced steak is so soft and tender that it practically falls apart on my fork. As for the ciders, we

enjoyed everything from Shacksbury’s The Basque to Tod Creek Coastal Blue and Twisted Hills’ Paradise Pear. Both menus rotate frequently, so there’s always something new to try, including ciders that you can’t find anywhere else in the city and in sizes that are perfect for sharesies. No word yet on the precise closing date, but early September is likely. Open Thursday-Friday, 6-11pm, Saturday 5-11pm 55 Powell |OrchardAndTheSea.ca

MENSCH JEWISH DELICATESSEN

Nitzan Cohen is serious about his meat. The Israeliborn chef, who previously worked at Blackbird Public House and caterer Cocktails & Canapes, has a soft spot for New York-style pastrami. Unlike the more common Montreal smoked meat, Cohen’s pastrami is smoked for eight hours, brined for 10 days, and then steamed for four hours. It’s then handcut into thick, greedy slices (10 ounces-worth) and piled onto rye for the signature Reuben sandwich or the more simple (but no less filling) pastrami. The meat is juicy, chewy and fork-tender, with just the right amount of spice in the rub.

@FoodGirlFriday Tacofino’s new Yaletown location has officially opened. The 50-seat counter-service restaurant and bar includes a 12-seat patio and a takeout bar. Look for a few new menu items, including tater tot carnitas, beef brisket barbacoa, crispy squid, as well as some new taco varieties. Open 11am-10pm Monday-Wednesday and 11am until late ThursdaySaturday. Tacofino.com The 10 chefs who will be competing at the Gold Medal Plates in Victoria

The counter-service deli also offers a truly stellar take on the classic lox on a bagel. The salmon is beet-cured and piled on a poppy seed bagel with abandon before being topped with labneh cheese instead of the more traditional Philly. It’s a brilliant sammie that only needs the accompanying slice of dill pickle (made in-house) to make it complete. Egg salad, served on challah bread, is another star – smooth, creamy, tangy – made with free-range eggs and roma tomatoes. It goes down like it’s going out of style – which it likely was before Cohen reintroduced it to the slavering masses. Look to pay around $9 for a half-size and $13-$14 for a full, 10-ounce serving. For dessert, if you’re lucky, there will be babka, although the lokshen kugel is excellent. If you’re wondering about the latter, it’s the Jewish take on bread pudding, except made with noodles and is a creamy, slightly crunchy delight that will cause obsession and Friday night cravings (or that could just be me). Taste it all before Sept. 9. Open Monday-Thursday, 11am-3pm, Friday 11am6pm. | 666 E. Broadway | Facebook.com/menschdelicatessen W on Nov. 17 have been announced. Competitors from Vancouver include Jefferson Alvarez, Ricardo Valverde and Ned Bell. See the full list at GoldMedalPlates. com. Uva Wine & Cocktail Bar has launched a new happy hour menu, available daily 2pm-6pm. Four new cocktails created by bar manager Sabrine Dhaliwal include the Captain Shaddock ($9) with Knob Creek bourbon, grapefruit, peach, lime, and Palermo bitters, as well as the Abby Cadabby with Zubrowka vodka, fino sherry, orange, apple, lemon, and crabapple bitters. In

Right now it’s prime sockeye season. Grilling gives this protein even more substance and its widely agreed that salmon is robust enough to stand up to reds. The key is to avoid full-bodied, tannic monsters that will simply overwhelm. (Save that Cabernet Sauvignon for a beef steak.) The cliché red pairing with salmon is Pinot Noir, especially our local juice. Indeed, the two work beautifully together but there are plenty of other lighter reds with soft tannin that sing with salmon. The bracketed suggestions are wines I have recommended in the past. Made from the light and fruity Gamay grape, Beaujolais is an obvious sidestep to Pinot Noir. (Try the 2014 Mathieu & Camille Lapierre, Morgon $39.99 BC LS). Italy offers plenty of light to medium bodied wines like Valpolicella, Bardolino (2013 Monte Del Frà $17.49 BC LS), Barbera and an uncomplicated, straightforward Chianti. Fineboned versions of Cabernet Franc either from the Loire Valley (2013 Jean Maurice Raffault, Chinon $19.49 BC LS) or BC (something along the lines of the 2014 Harper’s Trail) are also lovely matches. Here are a few more new recommendations that are also fit for our flagship fish. 2014 Gabbiano, Chianti DOCG, Italy $13.49 BC Liquor Stores Bright and pure red cherry, plum and tea nuances. This Chianti is simple but so drinkable and great value for the money. A zingy little number, it’s a good choice if you are incorporating tomatoes into your salmon creation.

addition to beer and wine specials, the food menu includes arancini (three for $5), bruschetta ($3 each) and more. UvaVancouver. com In other “happy” news, Jules Bistro has launched a new happy hour menu that features $8 appetizers like fresh mussels, beet salad, cheese and charcuterie platters, and Asian-inspired dishes like a crab salad roll and Thai marinated chicken bites with pommes dauphine. Add a glass of wine for $5 or $25 for a bottle. Available daily 2:30pm5:30pm. JulesBistro.ca

2013 Chateau Nakad, ‘Cuvée L’Alouette’, Coteau de la Bekaa, Lebanon $17.49 BC Liquor Stores A plumper red if you’re looking for something with more girth. In fact, there’s even some Cab Sauv in this. But a high percentage of daintier Cinsault keeps it light on its feet and tannins in check. It has an exotic spice edge along with wild strawberry blossom nuances. Try with a classic BBQ rub. 2015 Orofino, Gamay, Celestino Vineyard, Similkameen Valley, BC $23 winery direct For a local match, go Gamay! Orofino’s is fresh, juicy and loaded with flavours of crunchy Skeena cherries. Tiny quantities made so now is the time to buy it and drink it, especially with sockeye smothered is a strawberry sauce. 2015 Château de Nages, ButiNages Rosé, Costières de Nîmes AOC, France $23-25 private wine stores (Kitsilano & Marquis Wine Cellar, Granville & Crosstown Liquor Stores, Village & 16th Street Liquor Stores in West Van) Technically not red, but rosé IS made from red grapes. Plus, the ButiNages matches salmon’s colour so perfectly. Grenache and Syrah lend baked thyme, raspberry and lavender notes to this dry rosé.You can echo the flavours by studding your fish with savoury summer herbs. 2014 La Pépiè, Cabernet Franc, Vin de Pays du Val de Loire, France $27-30 private wine stores (like Marquis Wine Cellars) Vibrant cranberry and red currants with very fine unobtrusive tannin. Really quite easy to guzzle. Play on its slight yet refreshing herbal character and serve minted green beans alongside your salmon. W

On Sept. 18, Chefs’ Table Society of BC will host their third annual Slow Fish Dinner at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. The evening starts with PICA culinary student-prepared canapés, and libations including BC wines. Next, attendees move through the school’s eight professional teaching kitchens to meet the visiting chefs, who will each offer a tasting-sized portion of local sustainable seafood delicacies paired with wines from Salmon Safe wineries. Brewer vs Brewer: The “We finally left Vancouver and featured some women for once” edition Stephen Smysnuik The Growler

@TheGrowlerBC

We’ve had some emails about this series, oh yes. “Can you feature some Vancouver Island breweries?” you’ve asked. “How about some women for once?” you’ve pleaded. And so, we’ve heeded your calls and invited Chloe Smith, co-founder of Townsite Brewing – a woman brewer and small-town small business owner – to speak with Aly Tomlin, co-founder of Chemainus’ Riot Brewing, who also happens to be a woman brewer and small-town business owner. The two met for the very first time in July at Tomlin’s still-under-construction brewery, which would be open the following month after six years of planning and multiple false starts. They hardly addressed the issue of being women in a male-dominated industry because, from each perspective, it’s never been an issue. As Smith says. “When people ask me what it’s like to be a woman in the beer industry, I want to say, ‘It’s like being a woman eating breakfast.’ It’s neither here nor there.” So there you have it. Enjoy? Chloe Smith: I spoke at an economic development summit recently and I had representatives from three different towns in BC come up to me afterward and say, “How do I get a brewery in my town?” They were from some small town up in the Interior, from Hope and somebody on the Island. Hope would be amazing. When we opened – and

Aly Tomlin of Riot Brewing and Chloe Smith of Townsite sit down with The Growler to talk beer. Stephen Smysnuik photos we’re dinosaurs now, four years ago was the dark ages – people were drinking a lot of craft beer, but it wasn’t about craft beer coming to your town and changing the whole dynamic. We really had to fight for that, for sure. Aly Tomlin:You know the days when we were looking for a home, we came to Powell River, we looked in Campbell River, we moved to Duncan with the plan to open a brewery down there, and it just did not work. The person who supported us [in Duncan] was the lady at economic development. I called her and said, “Thanks for all your help, this is not working, I know you really want us to stay but we’re moving on.” She said, “Oh no, you can’t you’re so important to the Cowichan Valley. Just give me a couple days.” So the next day, [a representative] from Chemainus called us and said, “We want you to open here.” That’s made a huge difference. We fucked up because we picked a city not knowing if the city wanted us. It’s a lot different when the city wants us.

CS: And is willing to work with you.Totally. I think the industry has changed, too. It’s changing really rapidly and people realize the importance of it now. AT: It’s changing insanely. CS: Insanely, yeah. That’s been the hardest part for me, I think, just trying to manage the demand and the logistics, but also the regulatory stuff that changes so quickly, and the administrative hours in figuring that shit out. AT: You don’t just sit there and wait for Ken [Beattie, BC Craft Brewers Guild executive director]’s emails? CS: [Laughs] I try to be a little more proactive than that! AT: We don’t have to be yet, and I think he’s doing a great job of keeping people in the loop. CS: It is time for a national association. It’s ridiculous that we’re not nationally united. AT: Sure, but for now I think Ken has done a great job for what limited resources he has. I actually need to give him money. I went to pay the dude [for annual fees?] and he was like, “We don’t take credit card,

only take cash.” I was like, OK dude, we’re not even open, so I don’t have $500 cash to give you. [Laughs] So I couldn’t pay him, but he still gives me all the emails. I’m like a pseudomember until I have the cash. Seriously though – what kind of organization doesn’t take credit cards? Ken, if you see this, get with the routine.

What age do we live in? So you’re a brewer at Townsite? CS: Oh yeah. The stout and the pale ale are my recipes. I brewed the first Sun Coast Pale Ale, and I was on the bottling line the other day.You know what it’s like running a small business – everyone does everything. AT: That’s how it’s going to be here. CS: And I miss brewing, for sure. AT: I think it kind of sets us – because it’s the same kind of situation for us, I’m a brewer too – it really gives us the upper hand. You see a lot of breweries opening up these days, and they’re lawyers or marketing dudes thinking, “This is cool, let’s open a brewery.” It’s way harder to screw us over. If you’re a brewer working for a dude who has no experience, you can be taken so much easier. I think it’s cool because there aren’t

many breweries these days – CS: – being open by brewers. AT: How many breweries during this renaissance of the last couple of years have been opened by brewers? Strange Fellows? Parkside?* CS: I can’t even name the brewers that have opened the last four years. AT: I read the Growler and I’m like, I don’t know these people! Where did they come from? CS: A brewery opened in Vancouver last week! Like, what? AT: I don’t understand what’s going on. CS: It’s insane. * Editor’s Note: Nine professional brewers have founded or co-founded breweries since 2012, and over two dozen more by homebrewers with no previous professional experience. % (2# ?@/ $=:: 324</#!8?>24. head online toWestender.com W

Continued from page 9

Clockwise from top left: Jason Mewes; Paul Westerberg; Larry David; Tom Verlaine and Patti Smith.

Famous men I would have married

Had I been a hot-ass, high-profile starlet in each decade Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay

1950S JACKIE WILSON

Before Jackie Wilson became famous, he was a high school dropout in a street gang called the Shakers and boxed for a living in Detroit. Later, he was discovered by Johnny Otis and became the superstar we all remember. Jackie had an amazing voice. He was smooth as butter. He danced like a grasshopper on Percocets. They called him “Mr. Excitement”. Come on, who wouldn’t want to lock it down with “Mr. Excitement”?

1960S LARRY DAVID

I know, I know. Larry David is looking pretty sour grapes these days (except for that smile, goddamn), but the man is almost a trillion years old. Just hear me out on this one. Look at him when he was in his 20s – all squeaky clean with those velvet lips. Not bad. Sure, I’d have to deal with a man who pays so much attention to the details that it runs his entire existence, but I would also get to be married to the guy who wrote Seinfeld. Seinfeld! Even I could live in that shadow. If I married Larry David I would have a

Westender.com

wicked-hilarious extended family, get to call bad drivers “shmohawks” plus, celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah. Even if none of these fantasies came true and it turned out that Larry David was a crappy husband, bad kisser and total asshole, I’d get to retire in that sweet LA mansion he has and “do brunch” with Susie Essman on a regular basis.

1970S TOM VERLAINE

There is no way that Tom Verlaine would have fallen for a high profile starlet. However, he did fall for Patti Smith and so this is “Famous Men I Would Have Tried To Marry If I Was Patti Smith”. We would be high as kites running around New York, arms wrapped around one another’s slender, androgynous junkie bodies as we discussed punk rock and poetry. We would share a bare, single mattress on the floor and bathe in one another’s post-show sweat. We would swap shirts and books about Communism, dog-earring our favourite passages while swapping spit through dry tongues. We would be totally stupid, whimsical and living in that heroin dream haze that not even a piano falling from the sky can squash. We’d cook pasta and make out. A lot. Even our fights would be beautiful. Everyone would smell us coming. Our friends would want to be us, while talking shit behind our backs the minute we left the room. Cigarettes for breakfast and dope for lunch. Then, years later, our disgusting junkie lives would

be seen as glamorous to aspiring punk rockers.

You need a proper wool winter coat that’ll last for years. Since you’re channelling the new Olivia, make it red – we’re coveting this Max Mara Umano Red Double Cloth piece ($1,560, at Max Mara).

2. SUITS YOU

Suit jackets and blazers don’t feature in enough modern women’s wardrobes, but they should because they smarten up your look instantly. They can look boxy and mascu-

1980S PAUL WESTERBERG

Paul Westerberg and his bandmates in The Replacements were drinkers. They loved the booze. Minnesota pride. I would take that man and caress his hair while his thick, drunken Minneapolis beer breath calmed my temples like essential oils. I would put up with the whiskey dick night after night, just to sit next to him as he played around on his acoustic guitar, writing songs about us that would turn into punk rock relics. I would help him get dressed when he couldn’t speak. I would stock the fridge with Budweiser. I would be the designated driver, always. Yeah, you know what? I would dare.

1990S JASON MEWES

Dating Jason Mewes in the ‘90s would be like playing LIFE and drawing the “splitlevel shack” card and a food stamp salary – shit luck from the get-go. But I like a fixerupper, I like a challenge, so I’d live and breathe his junkie bullshit if it meant I got to come home to him whispering, “Let me get up in them guts,” as a sex request. In the ‘90s Mewes was not a man, he was boy – a boy who’s main concern was getting his dick wet and t-bagging his sleeping friends. Normally, this kind of mentality would send me raging, but Mewes is goofy, innocent, obnoxious and, in my fantasy, I can fall for that. Hard. W

line in typical cuts and dark colours, so instead, choose a one-button style in a vivid colour like cobalt blue. DEX Solid One Button Blazer, $69, at Hudson’s Bay and TheBay.com.

3. FLOWER POWER

Floral prints are sometimes sweet and girlie, which is not Olivia’s style. But when they’re given an abstract or graphic twist or blown up large, they’re pretty, but powerful. $135, The Barefoot Contessa.

4. BEAUTY STYLE

Olivia’s transforma-

tion didn’t extend from her wardrobe to her face. Her style continues to be perfectly groomed, with minimal makeup. To get her flippy ’do, use a straightener such as Austin House Global Flat Iron ($44.99, at Holiday.ca), which has dual voltage so it works virtually anywhere in the world, pin curl your hair, then brush it through. A nude lip colour with a matte finish provides the finishing touch. Tarte Cosmetics Lippie Linger ($29, at Sephora) is hydrating and comes in eight shades to suit any skin tone. W

Using scissors, snip off a strand of your hair. As you do, sing a beloved song with uplifting lyrics. Seal the hair in an envelope on which you have written the following: “I am attracting divine prods and unpredictable nudges that will enlighten me about a personal puzzle that I am ready to solve.” On each of the next five nights, kiss this package five times and place it beneath your pillow as you sing a beloved song with uplifting lyrics. Then observe your dreams closely. Keep a pen and notebook or audio recorder near your bed to capture any clues that might arrive. On the morning after the fifth night, go to your kitchen sink and burn the envelope and hair in the flame of a white candle. Chant the words of power: “Catalytic revelations and insights are arriving.” The magic you need will appear within 15 days.

This would be a good time to have a master craftsperson decorate your headquarters with stained glass windows that depict the creation stories of your favorite indigenous culture. You might also benefit from hiring a feng shui consultant to help you design a more harmonious home environment. Here are some cheaper but equally effective ways to promote domestic bliss: Put images of your heroes on your walls. Throw out stuff that makes you feel cramped. Add new potted plants to calm your eyes and nurture your lungs. If you’re feeling especially experimental, build a shrine devoted to the Goddess of Ecstatic Nesting.

You Geminis are as full of longings as any other sign, but you have a tendency to downplay their intensity. How often do you use your charm and wit to cloak your burning, churning yearnings? Please don’t misunderstand me: I appreciate your refined expressions of deep feelings -- as long as that’s not a way to hide your deep feelings from yourself. This will be an especially fun and useful issue for you to meditate on in the coming weeks. I advise you to be in very close touch with your primal urges.

Be vulnerable and sensitive as well as insatiable and irreverent. Cultivate your rigorous skepticism, but expect the arrival of at least two freaking miracles. Be extra nurturing to allies who help you and sustain you, but also be alert for those moments when they may benefit from your rebellious provocations. Don’t take anything too personally or literally or seriously, even as you treat the world as a bountiful source of gifts and blessings. Be sure to regard love as your highest law, and laugh at fear at least three times every day.

Let’s assume, for the sake of fun argument, that you do indeed have a guardian angel. Even if you have steadfastly ignored this divine helper in the past, I’m asking you to strike up a close alliance in the coming weeks. If you need to engage in an elaborate game of imaginative pretending to make it happen, so be it. Now let me offer a few tips about your guardian angel’s potential purposes in your life: providing sly guidance about how to take good care of yourself; quietly reminding you where your next liberation may lie; keeping you on track to consistently shed the past and head toward the future; and kicking your ass so as to steer you away from questionable influences. OK? Now go claim your sublime assistance!

Although you may not yet be fully aware of your good fortune, your “rescue” is already underway. Furthermore, the so-called hardship you’ve been lamenting will soon lead you to a trick you can use to overcome one of your limitations. Maybe best of all, Virgo, a painful memory you have coddled for a long time has so thoroughly decayed that there’s almost nothing left to cling to. Time to release it! So what comes next? Here’s what I recommend: Throw a going-away party for everything you no longer need. Give thanks to the secret intelligence within you that has guided you to this turning point.

Here comes a special occasion -- a radical exemption that is so rare as to be almost impossible. Are you ready to explore a blessing you have perhaps never experienced? For a brief grace period, you can be free from your pressing obsessions. Your habitual attachments and unquenchable desires will leave you in peace. You will be relieved of the drive to acquire more possessions or gather further proof of your attractiveness. You may even arrive at the relaxing realization that you don’t require as many props and accessories as you imagined you needed to be happy and whole. Is enlightenment nigh? At the very least, you will learn how to derive more joy out of what you already have.

In the coming weeks, I suspect that Life will attempt to move you away from any influences that interfere with your ability to discern and express your soul’s code. You know what I’m talking about when I use that term “soul’s code,” right? It’s your sacred calling; the blueprint of your destiny; the mission you came to earth to fulfill. So what does it mean if higher powers and mysterious forces are clearing away obstacles that have been preventing you from a more complete embodiment of your soul’s code? Expect a breakthrough that initially resembles a breakdown.

Maybe you know people who flee from the kind of Big Bold Blankness that’s visiting you, but I hope you won’t be tempted to do that. Here’s my counsel: Welcome your temporary engagement with emptiness Celebrate this opening into the unknown. Ease into the absence. Commune with the vacuum. Ask the nothingness to be your teacher. What’s the payoff? This is an opportunity to access valuable secrets about the meaning of your life that aren’t available when you’re feeling full. Be gratefully receptive to what you don’t understand and can’t control.

I placed a wager down at the astrology pool. I bet that sometime in the next three weeks, you Capricorns will shed at least some of the heavy emotional baggage that you’ve been lugging around; you will transition from ponderous plodding to curious-hearted sauntering. Why am I so sure this will occur? Because I have detected a shift in attitude by one of the most talkative little voices in your head. It seems ready to stop tormenting you with cranky reminders of all the chores you should be doing but aren’t -- and start motivating you with sunny prompts about all the fun adventures you could be pursuing.

What you are most afraid of right now could become what fuels you this fall. Please note that I used the word “could.” In the style of astrology I employ, there is no such thing as predestination. So if you prefer, you may refuse to access the rich fuel that’s available. You can keep your scary feelings tucked inside your secret hiding place, where they will continue to fester. You are not obligated to deal with them squarely, let alone find a way to use them as motivation. But if you are intrigued by the possibility that those murky worries might become a source of inspiration, dive in and investigate.

Are you ready for your mid-term exam? Luckily I’m here to help get you into the proper frame of mind to do well. Now study the following incitements with an air of amused rebelliousness. 1. You may have to act a bit wild or unruly in order to do the right thing. 2. Loving your enemies could motivate your allies to give you more of what you need. 3. Are you sufficiently audacious to explore the quirky happiness that can come from cultivating intriguing problems? 4. If you want people to change, try this: Change yourself in the precise way you want them to change.
