CAN WE TAKE A BREAK PLEASE?

I have a request of the City of Vancouver: Can we have one whole weekend in the West End with no festivals, parades, marathons or charity walks and runs? I have lived here for 30 years and this seems like the worst summer yet for such events. The highlight of my week is the chance to walk on the Seawall in peace and quiet on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Can’t remember the last time that that was possible. –Anthony

CYCLE SAFETY

Having travelled to many cities with bike sharing infrastructure and used them extensively, I was very pleased to hear that Vancouver was intending to emplace such a program. The ability to do quick one-way rentals between two points without worrying about bike storage is fabulous in big cities, both for locals and for tourists. It is, however, alarming

to see the recent low-quality installation of Mobi locations in the downtown and the West End, some of which have just been dropped into the street. In every city I have used the bikes, the racks are on extra-wide sidewalks, not in conflict with cars (or even completely off street in their own little plaza in a park). The placement of some of the racks in Vancouver is obviously dangerous, with users needing to insert and remove bikes essentially into an active traffic lane. Someone is going to get seriously injured or killed, and the city would be guilty of gross negligence if so. Although the parked bicycles may not extend further from the curb than a parked car, a 20-bike station in a popular location will have constant in-and-out activity each hour, rather than the roughly hour-long typical parking stay of a vehicle with a single entry and exit. This will thus generate constant traffic conflicts between passing cars

and the cyclists using this otherwise desirable service. These units need to be put in safe locations. –Brett Gladman

KEEP IT ON THE TRACK

There has been a lot of media hype recently about a crack down by the police on all the noisy motorcycles and suped-up cars, but they are obviously not talking about the West End. It is now 11:39pm and I’ve just heard the fourth inconsiderate yahoo on his loud noisy bike speeding down Nelson or Denman since 10pm. Get over your selfish selves and realize the West End is not a racetrack but is a residential community that is over 125 years old, with families with children, people needing their sleep so they can work and seniors trying to get some rest. Be quiet or stay in whatever neighborhood you live in and leave this neighborhood in peace. –Don Allison

Vancouver businesses land lead roles in film, TV productions Vancouver Beach Company’s Marko Kosoric enjoys the sun at English Bay from the comfort of a rental beach chair. Grant Lawrence photo

CHRISTOPHER CHEUNG @bychrischeung

Sand, shade, and a seat for English Bay beach bums Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

“Everywhere we go in life, we want to sit down.We want to be in a chair. That’s why we have an ass.” – Jerry Seinfeld, If that’s funny because it’s true, the Vancouver Beach Company has your ass covered. They partnered with the Parks Board for a two-year pilot project that could unseat Vancouver’s age-old beachgoing tradition of stretching out a towel on the sand up against a log. Instead, this summer they’ve offered chairs and umbrellas for rent on English Bay Beach. My mom is an avid Vancouver beach-goer since 1973, and has never missed a summer on the sand on Third Beach in Stanley Park. She’s perfectly okay with the arrival of the chairs and umbrellas and hopes the operation expands to Third. “Whenever I went to Europe and used the beach chairs and umbrellas system they have there, I always thought it would work well here. It’s civilized!” Indeed, if you’ve ever been lucky enough to visit a resort town pretty much anywhere else in the world, be it Italy, France, the Caribbean, or Mexico, beach chairs and umbrellas are pretty much the expected norm. Only those out of luck are planting bums in sand. According to some, Vancouver has finally caught up. “A lot of locals have said ‘it’s about time,’” says Marko Kosoric, who was running the rental stand when I stopped by. “The Parks Board was looking for a way to provide shade on the beaches, so it was a perfect fit with our company.” Fifteen dollars will get you a blue canvas-and-wood recliner chair and a big, blue and white striped umbrella for three hours. Marko or one of his co-workers will personally follow you to your choice spot on the beach and pound the umbrella into place. If you rent a chair or an umbrella, you also get an exclusive beach-delivery meal

option, as the rental company has also partnered with nearby Milestones. They’re even working on a liquor license for next summer, with a cooler that would attach to the base of the umbrella stand. Sounds pretty heavenly, eh? Not everyone is a fan. Steino Reinhart, who has been worshipping the sun on English Bay Beach since the late 1960s and has the deep, leathery brown tan to prove it, didn’t hold back with his opinion. “The umbrellas block my view! We don’t need them on this beach.Vancouver has always been about the natural beach experience, raw nature, sand and driftwood, not this European-style umbrella nonsense.” In fact, not a lot of manicured English Bay Beach is natural: the logs have been cut to size and carefully arranged in neat rows, and that dusty sand on the giant swath of upper beach is imported. Now that we’re into the dog days of August, the Vancouver Beach Company is assessing their first year in the beach bum business. According to Marko, it’s been a great summer. Umbrellas are the most popular for the healthconscious who want to enjoy the beach and still have direct contact with the sand, but want to avoid direct contact with the sun. Customers have so far been a 50/50 split of locals and tourists. They’ve come from as far away as Australia, Mexico, and England, and some have been daily repeat customers for their entire stay. “During hot stretches, we can sell out of all 40 umbrellas. It’s neat to see them spread out all over the beach,” says Marko. “Based on this summer, we’ll for sure be back, with a possible expansion to other beaches around the city.” The chairs and umbrellas are available every day from 11am to sunset. As one of those towel-onthe-sand beach-goers, I was skeptical when I sank into one of the rental chairs on English Bay Beach. I have to admit that my immediate reaction was an audible sigh of relaxation, which Marko noted with a knowing smile. Now beer me! W

The Ovaltine Cafe is in the Downtown Eastside, but there was a time when it was a diner in Nazi-occupied America. And another time when it was a diner in a Chicago of 2035, run by robots. “Customers will come in and tell us, ‘We saw you on TV!’” said Rachel Chen, who owns the cafe with her mother, Grace. As Metro Vancouver’s reputation as Hollywood North continues to grow, many small businesses are getting their time in the limelight. 2015 was a record year for film and television productions for the City of Vancouver, which reported hosting 353 productions, up 40 per cent from the previous year, and gained $710,000 in revenue from street-use permits alone. Recently in BC, productions such as Star Trek Beyond spent more than $69 million, Deadpool more than $40 million and the latest season of Supernatural $38.6 million, according to the Motion Picture Association of Canada (MPACanada). Supernatural also used the 73-year-old Ovaltine Cafe, whose retro look and classic neon signs make it a favourite for Vancouver productions. Will Smith and Ben Affleck have sat in its seats. “I really wanted to keep this an old diner,” said Grace Chen. She has an affinity for diners; she ran the Save On Meats diner between 1999 and 2010.

The 73-year-old Ovaltine Cafe on East Hastings boasts a retro look and classic neon signs that make it a favourite for Vancouver-shot film and television productions. Dan Toulgoet photo The Chens charge productions a minimum of $5,000 a day. The entire cafe closes and designers come in to redo it as a distant locale. Recently, it became a diner in 1965 San Francisco for the Bruce Lee biopic Birth of the Dragon. Aside from locations, small businesses also offer many props for productions. Heather Baker, who owns 43-year-old antique store Baker’s Dozen Antiques

on Main Street, said the street is a popular destination for production staff. Main Street’s eclectic mix of shops that sell antiques, furniture and knick-knacks makes looking for props convenient. At Baker’s, items are rented out at approximately 20 per cent of their cost, usually calculated by the week. A damage deposit is required; some of Baker’s items are worth thousands of dollars.

CITY SHORTS // SOCKEYE RETURNS LOWEST IN A CENTURY

If sport, commercial and aboriginal fishermen in BC thought 2009 was a bad year for Fraser River sockeye returns, then 2016 is shaping up to be a disaster. Fewer than one million sockeye are expected to return – the lowest since the Hell’s Gate slide of 1914 that blocked the river. In the sockeye’s fouryear cycle, 2016 was expected to be a low return year for the Fraser River – about 2.2 million. But as of mid-August, returns were starting to point to a final tally that will be half that or even less. That means no commercial fishing for Fraser River

Fraser River sockeye salmon returns have fallen far short of expectations, ruling out the possibility of a commercial sockeye fishery this year. Photo Dan Toulgoet sockeye, and most First Nations will not get their allocation of salmon for food, social and ceremonial (FSC) purposes. Sport fishing for chinook was also closed after an opening of just 11 days.

The usual suspects in a lineup of culprits blamed for killing BC salmon typically include fish farms and global warming. Many believe that a “blob” of warm water in the northern Pacific Ocean and

“I’ve rented everything from a human skull to little pieces for a mad lab,” said Baker. Movie rentals have been part of her business since the beginning, and it’s grown over the years. “It’s a very important part of the Vancouver economy,” said Baker. “It covers an enormous group of Vancouver people – hairdressers, caterers – self-employed, for the most part.” One reason why Vancouver is so popular for screens is its visual diversity, said Kirk Adamson, a location scout and manager of 17 years who has worked on The Revenant and Man of Steel. “Vancouver’s got multiple looks,” said Adamson. “Everything is sought after, modern and old. You can duplicate Hong Kong, you can duplicate New York, you can duplicate LA and Seattle.” Aside from look, tax credits and a low Canadian dollar have helped draw Hollywood productions to BC. In fact, the tax credits were so good for productions that Finance Minister Mike de Jong said in May that the province could no longer afford them at their current level. The basic production services tax credit will consequently be cut to 28 per cent from 33 per cent, if approved by legislature in October. The tax credits cost BC taxpayers $491 million in the last fiscal year, up from an average of $313 million in each of the previous three years. W

subsequent low plankton levels are most likely the cause of this year’s and last year’s poor survival rate for Fraser River sockeye. “I wouldn’t be surprised, really, if the impact of that is what we’re seeing now,” said Brian Riddell, head of the Pacific Salmon Foundation. “Really you must have had something very large scale. It’s probably to do with food production in the North Pacific.” This will be the second year in a row in which the commercial fishery is closed to Fraser River sockeye. Last year, returns were expected to be 6.8 million but ended up at about two million. –Nelson Bennett, Business inVancouver

DINING OUT

From left: Restaurateur Vikram Vij relaxes on the patio of his new restaurant on Cambie; Vij’s Monarch Butterfly, braised squash with wood ear mushrooms; The line grows outside the lounge prior to opening. Dan Toulgoet photos

Meet the new Vij’s, same as the old Vij’s (and that’s OK!) Blue and orange chai cups cover the ceiling. It’s a cozy and comfortable space, and much more interesting than the actual dining room. The latter is brown and bland. And, the sound volume can often be beyond the pale. Sitting across from my friend one night at a two-seater, we had to repeat ourselves with every exchange, eventually lapsing into a disgruntled silence. Noise-reducing panels on the walls and ceiling would go a long way here. Service, however, led by GM and sommelier Mike Bernardo, is faultless. It almost seems like there are too many servers in the room at times. Frequent check-ins at each table by rotating staff are common. Everyone’s on top of everything and the timing in the kitchen is spot on. Despite, or perhaps because of this, the vibe feels a little more formal in this new space. There’s less of that relaxed, let’s-roll-up-oursleeves-and-dig-in feel that characterized the old location. The exception is when Vikram Vij himself is making the rounds. He was there on two out of three visits, and it made the heavy formality

So it is with Vij’s in its new location, which, after a two-year delay, finally opened in its Cambie Street home this past winter. The new space is considerably larger than the old “Jewel Box” in South Granville (the latter is still available to rent for private events). There’s a lounge now where you can wait for your table (no more lineups in the rain) and have a cocktail or three, along with the complimentary bites that are passed around frequently. Stained glass panels surround the room, which sits between the kitchen and bar.

lift like a temporary comedic break during a funeral dirge. As for the food, this is one area where change has yet to come. The much-lauded lamb popsicles are still here ($32) as is the grilled venison ($29.50). One of my favourites, the pork tenderloin, is just as delicious, with its pork hock-infused curry base.Yet, is it wrong that, nine months after opening, I expect to see something new? That being said, there is a new menu, but it’s limited and only available on the rooftop patio. The patio isn’t large, but it has all the makings of a charming space. String lights, wooden benches softened with pillows, and nice views of the mountains all combine to create a fun space to while away the summer. No kitchen up here, as of yet, so warming pans are, unfortunately, in use. Small chaat (snacks) like shortrib papri (similar to a crispy taco) with sour cream chutney ($10) are nice nibbles, as is a lentil pâté served with aromatic fenugreek crackers ($12). The rest of the menu is mainly limited to a handful of rice bowls. Nothing off the regular menu, including the lamb popsicles, is available

up here, but the lamb curry bowl in a creamy fennel seed sauce ($17) is more than decent. It feels a bit spare, however, and doesn’t tend to lend itself to extended al fresco feasting. The best part of the menu, whether on the patio or downstairs, is the liquid section. Jay Jones is the beverage director for the restaurant group and can often be found behind the bar,

mixing up standout cocktails using premium spirits like Vij’s own Bolly Water gin, produced in collaboration with Okanagan Crush Pad. And, the wine list is still an oenophile’s delight. The food is still excellent here, and perhaps my disappointment in the lack of change and the less-relaxed atmosphere is unjustified. Vij’s was, and continues to be, a revolutionary concept

for Asian dining in Vancouver. No doubt, when the menu changes, it will be exciting and fresh, and blow me away once again. Until then, I’ll try to be patient. W Food: !!!!! Service: !!!!! Ambiance: !!!!! Value: !!!!! Overall: !!!!!

was significant. I left feeling compelled to encourage a completely white immersion.White wine is often relegated to the “aperitif” or preamble before moving onto the “more serious” reds.Yet there are plenty of seriously complex and just seriously good white wines. One of my most memorable dinner parties with friends was an all-white wine feast. It wasn’t planned that way (and I’m sure we were dressed in multi-colours). Likely the menu inspired everyone to bring whites. From start to finish all seven bottles were fantastic and each completely different from the next. None of us felt deprived because there wasn’t a red in the lineup. If you weren’t one of the 6,600 white clad revelers who gathered on-mass at Concord Pacific Place last week, just throw your own white party. The final days of summer promise to be conducive to dining and you can up the ante by serving white wine exclusively. Here are a few you should take seriously. CRAFT BEER

Beer (and beer-like bevvies) from around the world the “Beer of the Pharaohs.” Calling it “beer” might be a tad generous though. “Rotten soggy bread juice” might be more accurate. Since the ancient Egyptians didn’t know how to malt grains, they instead baked large loaves of bread at a low temperature to allow the starches to (somewhat) convert to fermentable sugars, and likely discovered this purely by accident. The loaves were then soaked with water and left to ferment in open containers. The resulting boozy bread juice was strained and flavoured with dates and lotus flowers to make it less disgusting (good luck with that). Apparently there are some corners of Egypt where bouza is still made, which begs the question, WHY??

ROBERT MANGELSDORF @robmangelsdorf

If there is one thing universal amongst all human kind, it is our proclivity for drinking fermented grains. Around the world, in every culture, people love to get plastered. Despite what religious fanatics and mother-in-laws might have you believe, it’s truly in our nature. Early on in our history we discovered that rotten bread and grain could not only be salvaged, but turned into a delicious, effervescent beverage. As a result, people everywhere developed their own methods for making beer (and beer-like beverages) using the ingredients they had close at hand. Some of these ancient recipes are delicious and have survived to this day. Others are just straight-up weird. Check ’em out.

GRUIT (SCOTLAND)

The heavily tattooed Picts who first inhabited Scotland were said to have drank gruit before heading into battle. Or heading off to work. Or pretty much any time they were awake. Since Scotland is cold and miserable, it’s not really a great place for growing hops (or living). Instead, this ancient beer was flavoured with a mixture of local herbs that contained heather, rosemary, bog myrtle, horehound, mugwort and a host of other unappetizingly named plants. Versions of gruit could be found throughout much of Northern Europe during the Middles Ages, with the stubborn Scots being among the last to give it up in favour of hopped ales and (eventually) watery lagers. Some locally available examples include Salt Spring Island Ales’ Heather Ale and Parallel 49’s Suspect Device (which made a brief appearance in the first Brews Brothers 12-pack).

CHICHA (PERU)

Chicha is a fermented corn beer often brewed with adjuncts like quinoa and cane sugar. Doesn’t sound too bad, right? WRONG! In order to make the corn fermentable, old Peruvian ladies will chew the germinated corn kernels before baby-birding it all back up to be boiled (thank God) and fermented. The enzymes in saliva help break down the starches, converting them into fermentable sugars. But if you think this is some ancient method of brewing long since abandoned once modern methods were developed… WRONG AGAIN! This is still a popular drink in Peru, and there are chicha bars all over the country that specialize in this seriously questionable beverage. What the hell Peru? Seriously.

BOUZA (EGYPT)

SAHTI (FINLAND)

Bouza dates back to about 3,000 BC and was known as

A distant cousin of gruit,

sahti is a traditional Finnish farmhouse ale flavoured with juniper and is one of the oldest beer varieties still commercially brewed today. The resourceful Finns can make this “Christmas beer” out of just about any grain they have on hand, malted or not – even resorting to leftover bread if need be. Unlike most beers, sahti isn’t brought to a boil and is poured over un-sterilized juniper boughs prior to fermentation. So there are all sorts of wild yeasts at play, resulting in clove and banana notes as well as the distinctive juniper flavour. It’s an acquired taste to be sure, but one worth trying (unlike a lot of the other beers on this list). Parallel 49 does a seasonal limited run of their take on the sahti, called Sahti Claws. Look for it in its annual Christmas advent calendar.

UMQOMBOTHI (SOUTH AFRICA)

This seemingly random assortment of letters is actually a sorghum-based wild yeastfermented beer still available commercially in rural Africa. Recent studies have shown that fungal toxins present in both commercial and homebrewed umqombothi might be responsible for the unusually high rate of esophageal cancer in South Africa. Just a heads up.

HANDIA (INDIA)

This milky-looking “beer” is made by indigenous tribes in eastern India from rice left to ferment outdoors in massive open earthenware vessels. Local elephants have

A refreshing glass of Kvass, AKA Baltic Bread Juice. iStock photo. actually developed a taste for handia and have been known to lead organized attacks on

HUANGJIU (CHINA)

Commonly referred to as rice wine or yellow wine, it’s technically beer since it’s made from fermented grain – in this case, steamed rice. It sure looks like wine though. It’s non-carbonated, its colour can range from clear to reddish-brown and it’s often aged, in some cases for up to 20 years. Heavily salted varieties are used for cooking (do not drink this stuff, no matter how cheap it is), but the higher end stuff is sweet and at 12 per cent ABV and up, it makes a nice aperitif. Huang Zhong Huang Shaoxing is aged for eight years and is available at BC Liquor Stores.

KVASS (RUSSIA)

Pretty similar to bouza, but made from rye bread, because it’s Russia after all. And in typical Russian fashion, kvass is treated like a soft drink because in Russia, anything weaker than vodka is reserved for small children and elderly women.

Married to the biz

Vancouver actors get married on the set of ‘Welcome to Nowhere’ Sabrina Furminger Reel People

@Sabrinarmf

Free time is a precious commodity, and over the last couple of years, Vancouver actress Farah Aviva hasn’t had much of it. She’s been busy collaborating on feature films (A.R.C.H.I.E., which features the voice of Michael J. Fox, and The Adventure Club) with her longtime fiancé, Toronto-born actor-writer-director Robin Dunne (star of Sanctuary and Space Milkshake). They’ve been so busy with film work that earlier this summer, nearly two years after Dunne popped the question and Aviva said yes, they still hadn’t set a wedding date. So last month, when the

script for their latest movie – the Regina-shot Welcome to Nowhere, co-written and directed by Dunne and costarring them both – called for a wedding between Aviva’s character and that of Vancouver actor Matty Finochio, Dunne and Aviva opted to throw their own wedding on the film set minutes after they wrapped on the fictional one. “It started as a joke,” chuckles Dunne during a conference call with Aviva and Reel People. “Like, ‘you know what would be funny: if we actually used this day on the movie set and just got married?’” They floated this off-the-wall notion to Welcome to Nowhere’s producer, Shayne Putzlocher, one night over dinner. The couple thought their producer would scoff at the idea; instead, “he was like, ‘That’s a great idea! We have to do this!’” marvels Dunne. Since so many of Dunne and Aviva’s friends were already in the Welcome to Nowhere cast (including Vancouver powerhouses Sara Canning (Eadweard; On The Farm), Dan Payne, and David Milchard, as well

as Carlo Rota and Chantal Kreviazuk), they didn’t have to expand the guest list all that much to transform the fictional wedding into a bona-fide one. The pair treated their July 15 wedding just like any other important line item on their lengthyWelcome to Nowhere to-do list – and learned that there are ample similarities between the two types of productions. Dunne credits Jason Bohn, Welcome to Nowhere’s first assistant director, with making sure that both the wedding and the day’s filming went off without any hiccups. “I think this could be a new thing where people hire first assistant directors for their weddings,” says Dunne. Rota officiated the onscreen wedding, but for the non-fiction one, Dunne and Aviva picked an officiant at random from a web site, to classic rom-com effect. “I meet Robin at the end of the aisle, and [the officiant] starts talking, and in the first 10 seconds, she mentions water beetles, and unicorns, and rainbows, and I just start laughing so hard, I had tears coming down my

Vancouver to Hawaii cruise & Waikiki hotel stay

Vancouver actress Farah Aviva recently got married to actor-writer-director Robin Dunne on the set of the upcoming comedy feature Welcome to Nowhere. Contributed photo face,” says Aviva. At the end of 20 kooky minutes of water beetle and unicorn talk, the officiant “hands us this random stick, and Robin takes it and she has him throw it into a waterfall.” “Thank God no one brought their dog,” adds Dunne. And with that, they signed some papers and were legally married – and almost imme-

diately after the ceremony, Dunne was back behind the camera, shooting footage of guests celebrating in the tent for use in the film. They didn’t plan it this way, but both Dunne and Aviva wrote their vows on the back of pages from Welcome to Nowhere’s script. “It’s so perfectly us, because we’re always doing eight things at once, but we al-

ways manage to get everything done,” says Aviva. Welcome to Nowhere is a comedy about a man who returns to a rural town called Nowhere following the death of his father – and tries to get out from under a mountain of debt by faking an alien landing on the family farm. It’s slated for release in late 2016. Follow the film’s progress @WTNFilm. W

Lovers of homegrown cinema, rejoice! The 35th Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) is mere weeks away, and its line-up includes 10 locally produced feature films. Vancouver’s largest film fest has yet to unveil the entire line-up for its 2016 edition (which runs Sept. 29-Oct. 14), but it has announced the 10 documentaries and narrative feature films that comprise its wildly popular BC Spotlight series. Since its inception in 2013, the BC Spotlight series has earned the highest attendance ratings in VIFF’s history. This year, the BC Spotlight films will screen as part of the inaugural Ignite Programming Stream, which VIFF’s Aug. 18 press release describes as “a showcase of the inspired works emerging from the creative nexus that is British Columbia.” World premieres in the BC Spotlight include Peter Benson’s wedding comedy Marrying the Family (written by its star, Taylor Hill, who also penned 2013’s dance competition mockumentary Leap 4Your Life!), Vic Sarin’s

Kevan Funk’s Hello Destroyer makes its Vancouver premiere as part of VIFF’s BC spotlight. Contributed photo Keepers of the Magic (honouring the previously unsung heroes of cinematography), Linda Ohama’s A New Moon Over Tohoku (about the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident which devastated the coastal Japanese region of Tohoku), Jeff Chiba Stearns’ Mixed Match (a doc examining the unique challenges faced by multiracial people awaiting bone marrow transplants), and Alex Lasheras’ psychological thriller, Cadence. These world premieres are joined by Ann Marie Fleming’s animated feature Window Horses (The Poetic Persian Epiphany of Rosie Ming), Geoff Redknap’s The Unseen (which stars, among others, masterful local actors Julia Sarah Stone and Camille Sullivan), Pete McCormack’s Spirit Unforgettable (about the medical battle faced by Spirit of the West lead singer

John Mann), and Nettie Wild’s KONEL!NE: our land beautiful (winner of the Best Canadian Feature Documentary Award at Hot Docs). Hello Destroyer, the debut feature from Kevan Funk (who’s already had six shorts play VIFF), will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before screening for the hometown crowd. W

FILM REVIEW //

Laika Entertainment’s Kubo and the Two Strings.

‘Kubo’ is simply spellbinding story immediately pulls one into the striking landscape and highly refreshing narrative. The jaw-dropping stop-motion techniques are consistently impressive and the story is full of incredibly well-choreographed action. Kubo isn’t afraid to bury its mature themes and poignant lessons beneath a cloak of wacky characters and slapstick. The film, like the studio’s previous offerings (Coraline, ParaNorman), contains aspects that could be deemed frightening for small children yet also creates opportunity to create dialogue with kids about why scary things can sometimes be healthy. Kubo and the Two Strings is a rare gem, a masterclass in filmmaking that demonstrates genuine originality. The sheer craftsmanship of the marvelous technical achievements, mixed with a thought-provoking screenplay and fantastic vocal work prove Laika is one of the most ambitious and important studios currently producing true cinematic art. –Thor Diakow W

KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS

Starring Art Parkinson, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey Directed by Travis Knight Portland-based Laika’s fourth stop-motion animated feature is a spellbinding delight for all ages that casts a lingering spell which will resonate with audiences long after the closing credits have rolled. Kubo and the Two Strings is an ancient Japanese tale about a young boy named Kubo (Parkinson, best known as Rickon Stark from TV’s Game of Thrones) who embarks on a dangerous quest to find pieces of his late father’s armour in order to defeat the vengeful spirit of his grandfather. Along the way, he’s joined by a dry-witted and courageous monkey (Theron) and a samurai beetle warrior (Matthew McConaughey, providing plenty of well-timed comic relief). From its opening scene, the movie is an absolute wonder to behold as the

August 2016 September in Vancouver is clearly the month for giving. We feature 4 important fundraising events in our community. Unfortunately 3 of them are on the same day, Sunday 25th, so you may have to choose between walking to a festival, eating dim sum or racing around the city. Just remember that you don’t have to participate to give. Earlier in the month Passions takes place on Wednesday 7th at the Roundhouse. For those theatrically minded, the Vancouver Fringe Festival returns with over 800 performances over 11 days. For all you networkers, business and non-profit, our popular series of LOUDLunch begins the Fall season on Friday 9th at noon. Details of all the selected events in the coming month are shown on the right. If you have an event to be featured then add it to our website at www. LOUDbusiness.com.

We’ve learned two things in our years of watching live puppet shows. 1) Puppets aren’t really for kids, they just look that way. And 2) When puppets decide to party, you’ll want to cover the eyes of anyone under the age of 18. Which is why theatre lovers looking for an adult night out would do well to swing by the summer edition of the Vancouver Puppet Slam, dubbed “Skool’s in Session,” taking place this Friday at the Granville Island Revue Stage. A party for puppets and the locals who love them, this “classroom” won’t be kidfriendly. “People should expect it to be an adult show,” says slam co-organizer Jeny Cassady, with a laugh. “First of all, we are not able to edit anything, us who are organizing it. It’s in the vein of what you would see at a poetry slam, [so] people basically sign up and say I’m going to present something I’ve been working on.” The brainchild of Cassady and fellow actor-puppeteers, Morris Chapdelaine (Stargate), Dusty Hagerüd (Lillian

Code) and Fringe favourite Tara Travis (Til Death – The SixWives of HenryVIII), the Puppet Slam is the second of two fundraisers for the inaugural Vancouver International Puppet Festival, which is bringing puppeteering talent from around the world to Vancouver this October. Featuring local, national and international standouts in marionette puppetry, shadow puppetry, rod puppetry, hand puppetry, bunraku, clowning, and object puppetry, the festival represents a cross-section of the contemporary scene. “We were putting it together and we thought, what would best suit our public? How can we best introduce puppets to our audience?” asks the Avenue Q and Imaginary Mary puppeteer. “ We’re very small – that’s why we’re doing a fundraiser – but we’re trying, and accomplishing, to get a nice small, little picture of puppetry as a whole.” Meanwhile, at the slam, the audience will be treated to 10-minute sets by locals like Monster Theatre, Color Sound Lab, Carnival Sized Cinnamon Hearts, Stephanie Elgersma, Vancouver Puppet Theatre, Alison Ward

and Mind of a Snail. The Granville Island Cultural Society has donated the venue for the night, and Cassady hopes events like this will help fill a void that she, and her fellow organizers, see in the local arts community. “We’d been talking about how the city really needs something to do with puppeteering – the people need an outlet. [...] So it’s exciting for the puppet community to have a central place to play,” Cassady explains. “As the founders of the festival, we’re always getting questions from people: ‘Where can I learn how to puppeteer? Where are workshops? How can I get into the union? How can I perform? Where do I learn the craft?’ And it’s always a sad, sad thing to say, well, in Canada it’s very difficult to do that. “We’re hoping that things like the slam and the puppet festival itself will create a better communication for the community and people interested in puppets.” | Puppet Slam Summer Edition: Skool’s in Session takes place Aug. 26, 8pm at the Granville Island Revue Stage.Tickets $20 at Theatrewire.com W

International Pop Overthrow celebrates pop music of all kinds

are for Suckers, Preston & Fletcher, and Edmonton Block Heater, among others. But for people whose musical tastes are truly eclectic, taking in pop-punk as well as old school ‘70s R&B, the final act on the final night, Cass King & the Next Right Thing, may be the must-see. Some may remember King leading a huge ensemble on David Bowie’s “Fame,” with Orchard Pinkish, during the Rickshaw Theatre’s David Bowie tribute a few months ago. King is also the force behind the theatrical SHINE: A Burlesque Musical, and fronts the sexual comedy duo the Wet Spots with her husband, John Woods (also guitarist for the Next Right Thing). But she’s also a killer singer, as anyone who has seen her rip through Joe Jackson’s “I’m the Man” knows. It’s unclear whether King and her band will include that particular cover in their IPO set – Bash asks

David Bash keeps his ear to the wind. As curator and emcee of the International Pop Overthrow – an annual showcase of pop and power pop bands that began in Los Angeles in 1997 – he has to pay serious attention to what’s happening in the world of music. “We consider hundreds of bands each year,” he tells Westender. Bash focuses on unsigned acts from each of the 15-17 cities where the festival takes place, including locations across the USA,Vancouver,Toronto, Stockholm, and Liverpool. “I do mostly everything myself” – personally attending each chapter of the IPO – “although my girlfriend, Rina Bardfield, who is an aerospace engineer by day, somehow finds the time and energy to help me keep our website up to date and find bands online for me to audition.”

Bash and Bardfield rely on sites like Sonicbids, Bandcamp, ReverbNation, and SoundCloud to decide which bands are worthy. Still, as industrious as he is, when seeing Bash had booked The Top Boost to play this year’s Vancouver IPO, one could easily assume it was because the band had contacted him. A gloriously jangly, guitarcentric psych pop trio from New West, The Top Boost’s debut EP, Turn Around, came out just a few months ago, making it less than likely a Los Angeles-based music geek like Bash had heard them. So surely they were the ones who applied to the fest? Nope! Bash contacted them out of the blue, says bassist/vocalist Hunter Gogo. “I’m not sure how he heard us. We did get played on this one radio station – I think it’s Australian, a power pop radio station. But we got a message from him a few months ago. It sounded really interesting!”

The Top Boost – the new addition to the show that Bash is most keen to see live – is named for a channel on amplifiers that makes the “treble frequencies more prominent, and gives the music more of a bright sound,” Gogo explains. It’s a rather inspired gear geek reference, befitting their retro image and love for Rickenbacker 12-strings. Another festival performer is North Vancouver’s ElleEctric – AKA Stephanie Walker – who makes ethereal, texturally rich music which she admits needing “a lot of words” to describe. “My favourite is ‘indy pop magic,’ or ‘cinematic bedroom pop,’ I guess! That’s a fun one.” As Elle-Ectric, Walker has played the IPO before and this year she’ll be performing at Girl’s Night Out, a showcase of female-fronted bands, Aug. 31 at the Fairview Pub. There’s quite the range of styles on that one night

alone, which features performances from emotive singer-songwriter Eden Fine Day, bouncy surf-pop artist Laurie Biagini, charismatic Duvallstar leader Siobhan DuVall, and punk-poppers Pill Squad, fronted by Tracy Brooks Carroll, formerly of The Hip Type. Duvall’s streetwise, Chrissie-Hynde-meets-Stiv-Bators snarls and Brooks’ wry punk deadpan are about as far from elle-ectric’s gorgeous, feminine vocals as could be imagined, but the word “pop” does take in a pretty wide range of music, after all. The key is that, whatever style a band plays, their music has to be “melodic,” Bash explains, “whether it be more rock ’n’ roll based or more in line with singer/ songwriters.” Other IPO regulars include power-pop powerhouse China Syndrome (whose leader Tim Chan also slings axe for Pill Squad), as well as Danny Echo, Gold Stars

bands to focus on originals – but they’ll be debuting a new song, “Naked on the Dance Floor,” which King and Woods – finishing each other’s sentences – describe as “’70s up-tempo Joe Jackson, maybe with a little bit of the Knack. It’s about an actual party we attended, where the cops showed up.” Another new song, “Window Shopping,” was inspired by the legacy of Prince, and comes closer to King’s Wet Spots material, about a chance encounter in a grocery store that finds two strangers “looking at each other like we’re already fucking.” After all, any good festival needs at least a smidgen of sex. The Pioneer of Gelato in Vancouver Mario’s Gelati is, without a doubt, the pioneer of gelato in Vancouver. They started crafting their authentic gelato in Italy with family recipes dating back to 1929. These same recipes & techniques were brought and introduced to Canada by Mario in the late 70’s when gelato was relatively unknown. Since then, Mario’s Gelati has not only helped make “gelato” a household name, but has also earned a special place in the

hearts of Vancouverites alike. Available through restaurants & retail outlets across Canada, Mario’s Gelati prides itself in being experienced flavour crafters, ensuring that they offer a wide variety of flavours which can cater to different dietary needs. By using only the finest handpicked ingredients and sourcing locally whenever possible, Mario’s masterfully blends the authenticity of Italy with a taste that’s uniquely Vancouver.

Sinfully Sweet Peach Pie.

A thrilling adventure in organic fruit pie ... combining the simplicity of fresh Okanagan peaches and a dash of just the right spice...

Pastry 2 1/2 cups organic flour 1 tsp salt 1 cup organic butter 8 - 12 tbsp cold water

For your filling choose soft organic Okanagan peaches. Core and slice peaches about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Place in bowl add sugar, flour, nutmeg and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Gently fold together.

Method Mix flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in or rub in the butter until it resembles cornmeal. Add water and stir with hands until sticks together. Cover and put in the fridge overnight or at least 2 hours.

Pre-heat the oven to 375F. Separate the chilled pastry into halves. Working quickly roll each half out to fit a 9 inch pie pan. (Remember not to over work the dough) Place the first piece of pastry on the bottom of your pie plate, add the filling and cover with the second rolled out pastry. Crimp the edges and place in the oven.

Peach filling 5 cups sliced ripe Okanagan peaches (4-5 medium peaches) 3/4 cup organic cane sugar 3 tbsp organic flour 1/4 tsp fresh ground nutmeg 3 tbsp lemon juice

When you hear the word “meatball” you might think Italian, but Kofta has stepped away from that stereotype and have taken inspiration from across the world, which is much more accurate to the many origins of the meatball. Kofta puts a spin on their meatballs, offering up a variety of both traditional and unconventional meatfilled, vegan, and/or gluten-free options.

O

Many of our products at Oyama are made for the BBQ – bratwurst, sausages, smokies, etc. But your BBQ is also great for cooking something else: PIZZA! Pizza is best when cooked very hot. Without access to a pizza oven or a professional kitchen, your BBQ is the next best thing!

BBQ’D PIZZA WITH OYAMA SAUSAGE

Makes 1 delicious thin-crust pizza, serves 1 – 2 people INGREDIENTS

1 lb ball of uncooked pizza dough 1 tbsp olive oil ½ cup tomato sauce or pesto sauce About ½ cup of your favourite cheese (grated) 1 fresh Oyama sausage - we make about 200 varieties Additional toppings such as Oyama prosciutto or salami, sliced vegetables, herbs, etc.

METHOD Lay the dough ball on a lightly-floured surface. Press and stretch it into a thin sheet; approximately 10” across. Lightly brush the top side with olive oil. Cut a lengthwise slit in the sausage with a sharp knife and pull off the casing. Pinch off bite-sized chunks of sausage and form into little balls. Cook the sausage balls in a frying pan for about 10 minutes on medium heat. Pre-heat BBQ to about 600°F with the lid on. Prepare your additional toppings (slice the meat, chop the veggies, grate the cheese). Place them near the BBQ so they’re ready to add mid-way through the cooking process. Flip the pizza dough onto the BBQ grill, olive oil side down. Cook for about 2 minutes with the lid up. The dough will become firm and grill marks will appear underneath. Lightly brush the top of the dough with olive oil and flip before it becomes too crispy. Quickly add the ingredients starting with the sauce. Finish with the cheese. Lower the lid and cook about 5 minutes. Remove the pizza and let cool for a few minutes. Cut into pieces and enjoy!

Fall fashion preview: Hits and misses

gwear doesn’t work for me,” says Carson. “I mean, we’re forced into it as Canadians, but I think it’s an awkward combination.” According to Albano, “the vinyl trend and the moto jumpsuit are definite skips. They’re not versatile enough and don’t work for most lifestyles and body types.” And, says Carson, anyone who has to do anything practical should skip extra long sleeves. “They’re totally unrealistic for people who need to do normal stuff like typing – the most dysfunctional look of the season,” she says.

Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor

It seems more than a little bit ridiculous to be writing about autumn style as the sun’s splitting the stones. However, the fashion calendar dictates that summer ends around Aug. 31 and thereafter we must ignore the thermometer and swelter in winter coats. We asked our favourite fashion friends for their top tips this season, and what we should avoid.

IT’S A KEEPER

Both Albano and Carson say you should hold on to your cold-shoulder tops. To style them for winter, Carson recommends layering over a turtleneck. “That works for slip dresses too,” she says. W

RIGHT TO BARE ARMS

Stylist Crystal Carson says that this season is all about the arms. “We saw one-shoulder pieces, bell, over-long and puffy balloon sleeves, and a continuation of the coldshoulder trend,” she says.

PUFF PIECE

The one item that will be in everyone’s wardrobe is the puffer jacket, according to Carson. How to stop them looking basic or soccer mom? “Look for longer ones in luxe fabrics with interesting finishing or asymmetric tucks to the neck.”

From left: Fall looks from Chanel, Stella McCartney, and Max Mara. Contributed photos

COLOUR ME GOOD

Pack away summer’s orange-y reds, burgundy and pastels. This season, says stylist Nadia Albano, everyone’s got the blues. “It’s a huge trend this season with royal blue and midnight blue making a big appearance on runways,” she says. “We’re

also seeing purple, saffron, yellow, military green and the obvious – black.”

HIGH-STREET HITS

Albano believes one-shoulder silhouettes, micro-pleats, ruffles and tassels will be a big hit. “Tartan, plaid and anything military will also

play well because they can easily be integrated into an existing wardrobe,” she says. “The ’80s revival – metallics, big shoulder pads and Lurex – will be great for thrift shoppers.” Carson’s betting on chokers. “They’re not just trendy – they’re essential,” she says. “Menswear and

androgynous sweatshirts will also be big – literally, because they’re oversized. Then there’ll be luxe fabrics like velvet, and patchwork jeans instead of ripped ones – reconstructed, not deconstructed.”

When I checked in with Madelyn and Caroline in the studio, we shared a beautiful discussion about the future and importance of personal connection to art; fundamentally we all agreed with Madelyn’s perspective that “having things around that you have created and your friends have created does wonders for your happiness. It rejuvenates our spirit and the joy we radiate is contagious – everyone else feels it and wants some of that happiness for themselves, too. There is the most wonderful energy when you create with others – meaningful conversations, colour, music – it all helps us connect daily to a deeper sense of self. All these things within us blossom into such beautiful expressions of art.” I definitely have a few faves for the upcoming classes, and it’s highly likely you’ll find me (and my little gal, Sienna) this fall in the studio checking out our inner artists. ful haven for beginners and the seasoned artisans alike to explore their abilities in a wide variety of artistic mediums. Founder of The Luminous Elephant, Madelyn Mulvaney, believes with all of her heart that “the capacity for soaring creativity is innate and infinite in all of us. By creating in ways unique to our personalities we deepen our self awareness, wisdom and happiness and can bring our very best selves to the world.” With classes for both children and adults, the studio is a place for self-awareness through the art of creation. Very in tune with the shift toward personal connection to décor, Madelyn engages her students with every aspect of design, from painting to textile dyeing to modern knit and even the preliminary aspects of ceramics (alongside offering a stunning collection of handmade pieces by local ceramicist and studio teacher Caroline Katz).

The most brilliant shift that I’ve seen in design is the movement toward self-creation: the desire to showcase pieces that have meaning, story and personal reflection. Gone are the days of purchasing a random massproduced décor item with the mindset that it “goes with the colour scheme.” This beautiful new approach toward designing one’s dwelling demands much more from the accessories to which we give space within our homes – the sense of connection with what we choose to live with has become paramount, and we are now looking to either engage with local artists when we consider our décor, or take it one step further and literally get our hands dirty and create the works ourselves. Vancouver is home to a thriving arts community and we are fortunate to be involved in a time where this network is not simply open to established artists and professionals, but also to anyone with an interest in creating. Studios like The Luminous Elephant (LuminousElephant.com) have allowed space for novice creatives, offering a mind-

Preserve summer’s bounty

kitchen). It is so simple and fun to create, and it’s a great way to try out new marinades.

Patty Javier Gomez Whole Nourishment

@WholeNourishBC I love summer for a few different reasons, but the main one is the abundance of fresh, delicious food. I love food. Like I really, really love food. I love smelling it, touching it, making it, reading about it, and of course eating it. Sometimes I just Google pictures of food on the Internet and stare at them. So how do we keep all this summer goodness around once summer is over? With all the bounty we get this time of year, I always like to stock up and preserve some goodies for the winter when these delicious treats are no longer in season. My go-to approach is usually fermentation or freezing, but lately I have been fascinated with dehydrating as a means of preservation. And you don’t even need a fancy dehydrator, you can just use your oven on a low temperature or even the power of the sun. Dehydrating food has been a preservation method since ancient times. It’s a process in which water is removed,

inhibiting the growth of mold and bacteria. Just like any other preservation method, making food last longer and through the changing seasons was critical to our survival. In our modern world, this means of preservation is making a comeback.Whether you are dehydrating your food because Pinterest told you to, or you have chosen to live sustainably and want to preserve your summer bounty, it’s a quick and easy and old school way to save yourself some money and have some fun in your kitchen. There are so many fun delicious things that you can make by simply dehydrating your food. Here are some great ideas you can try.

FRUIT

Got a sweet tooth? Instead of crushing a pack of gummy bears or Skittles, dehydrate some of nature’s candy. Not only is dehydrating fruit a great way to preserve them, it is convenient as a daily snack for both adults and children. You can also add dried fruit to your morning oatmeal or mix it with some nuts and pack it on the trail when you hike or camp.

JERKY

For any road trip, jerky is must in my opinion, and there is something so satisfying about making your own (not to mention all the smells that it will produce in your

Remember fruit roll-ups? They were delicious and sported a million different preservatives and fake colours that were hella toxic.Well now you can have your cake and eat it too in the form of fruit leathers. All you need is some fruit and sweetener of your choice (the Internet has you covered for recipes).

BACKPACKING FOODS

Save yourself some money and time by having ready-togo meals for camping, hiking or even for busy nights. You can dehydrate veggies to make soups or stews, add your choice of flavorings and just add water to hydrate and voila! Instant delightful meal. W

The ghost of exes past Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay

I’m a 32-year-old girl who has had a number of longterm and short-but-passionate relationships from high school to now, and I’m in love with all of my exes, simultaneously! What’s worse is that I happen to be in a very happy, healthy, four-year relationship and I’m starting to feel like holding on to these feelings is akin to cheating on him, but I don’t know how to let them go. In fact, I don’t even know if I’m holding on to them, or if they’re holding on to me? Maybe I’m just meant to love many people in my life. Some of these people were real assholes, though, and still I retain this weird connection mentally with them – daydream about them, pretend my partner is them from time to time (although never in bed), contemplate what life would be like if I was still with them. Surely it’s supposed to fade, right? What’s keeping it alive? What does it mean for my ability to truly love my partner? Are we doomed? –Can’t Move On Let me get this straight. You are “in love” with all

Westender.com

your exes because, “from time to time,” they pop into your subconscious and you start to fantasize about the past, or what your life could have been like with each of them? “Love” is a pretty heavy word to use in this case, but what I do wonder is if you are 100 per cent “in love” with your current boyfriend? Do you love him like you love the fantasy of these ex-boyfriends? I just imagine you sitting at the dinner table, imagining the face of the boyfriend you blew in the Dairy Queen parking lot hovering over your man’s like a plastic Halloween mask. I don’t think your problem is that you have these fantasies, but the frequency of them. I wish I could slip inside your brain and gather data on the percentage of times you morph your boyfriend’s face into someone else’s. Day dreaming about what could have been is normal. We all do it sometimes. You see an old photograph, or you smell that musk you haven’t in years and the person attached to these memories just fills your mind like water into a bathtub. But if this is happening once a day, you may need some psychedelic drugs to rip you out of this. I like that you were sure to point out that you NEVER think about your exes during

sex. Come on… you really expect me to believe your fantasy-diseased brain is able to cut out the ex-dicks while the current dick is inside you? You don’t have to lie to me. I’m not the morality police. They are on their lunch break getting Starbucks. We’re all alone here. People think of all kinds of non-sex related stuff during sex. Cat Marnell wrote a piece in her old VICE column about how she would think about her family during sex, if they approved of her bathroom stall debauchery. (It’s actually a great piece, read it.) Other people make grocery lists or fantasize about the things they are too chicken shit to actually ask their partner to do. Me, well I have an anxious brain that never stops hustling, so sex is the only time it shuts the fuck up. Sex is my transcendental meditation. Confucius says:You are fucked. Just kidding, but you have some serious thinking to do about your current relationship. That thought process being: Am I really happy with this guy? According to almost every therapist, the repeating of these fantasies is either an indication that A) you are unhappy in your current relationship yet are afraid to admit it because fantasizing it is easier than splitting

an apartment’s worth of belongings in half or B) you are stressed, over-worked or anxious about your life in general right now, and fantasizing about the past, a time that was not so hard, is a way of coping. You do not sound satisfied in your current relationship. I never think about cheating on my husband. Every other guy in the world looks like Gilbert Godfrey now. But I’m happily monogamous. Sounds like you, my friend, are not with this guy. The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. That’s when you know you are over someone. You are using the memories of your exes as a way of blanketing something bigger. Get in your car, take a ride to quiet place, and go think about your boyfriend at home. Think about why you keep looking for happiness in every other man but him. It’s not fair for you to be putting invisible plastic masks all over his mug every time you close your eyes. Pretty soon that thin, tight string will start to pinch his head and it’ll snap off. Love, Mish W

In the coming weeks, I hope you won’t scream curses at the rain, demanding that it stop falling on you. Similarly, I suggest you refrain from punching walls that seem to be hemming you in, and I beg you not to spit into the wind when it’s blowing in your face. Here’s an oracle about how to avoid counterproductive behavior like that: The near future will bring you useful challenges and uncanny blessings if you’re willing to consider the possibility that everything coming your way will in some sense be an opportunity.

Oh how I wish you might receive the grace of being pampered and nurtured and entertained and prayed for. I’d love for you to assemble a throng of no-strings-attached caretakers who would devote themselves to stoking your healing and delight. Maybe they’d sing to you as they gave you a manicure and massaged your feet and paid your bills. Or perhaps they would cook you a gourmet meal and clean your house as they told you stories about how beautiful you are and all the great things you’re going to do in the future. Is it possible to arrange something like that even on a modest scale, Taurus? You’re in a phase of your astrological cycle when you most need this kind of doting attention – and when you have the greatest power to make it happen.

I invite you to dream about your true home... your sweet, energizing, love-strong home...the home where you can be high and deep, robust and tender, flexible and rigorous...the home where you are the person that you promised yourself you could be. To stimulate and enhance your brainstorms about your true home, experiment with the following activities: Feed your roots...do maintenance work on your power spot...cherish and foster your sources... and refine the magic that makes you feel free. Can you handle one more set of tasks designed to enhance your domestic bliss? Tend to your web of close allies...take care of what takes care of you...and adore the intimate connections that serve as your foundation.

At the risk of asking too much and pushing too hard, my Guerrilla Prayer Warriors have been begging God to send you some major financial mojo. These fierce supplicants have even gone so far as to suggest to the Supreme Being that maybe She could help you win the lottery or find a roll of big bills lying in the gutter or be granted a magic wish by an unexpected benefactor. “Whatever works!” is their mantra. Looking at the astrological omens, I’m not sure that the Prayer Warriors’ extreme attempts will be effective. But the possibility that they will be is definitely greater than usual. To boost your odds, I suggest you get more organized and better educated about your money matters. Set a clear intention about the changes you’d like to put in motion during the next ten months.

Suggested experiments: 1. Take a vow that from now on you won’t hide your beauty. 2. Strike a deal with your inner king or inner queen, guaranteeing that this regal part of gets regular free expression. 3. Converse with your Future Self about how the two of you might collaborate to fully unleash the refined potency of your emotional intelligence. 4. In meditations and dreams, ask your ancestors how you can more completely access and activate your dormant potentials.

I hope you are not forlorn, shivery, puzzled, or obsessive right now – unless being in such a state will mobilize you to instigate the overdue transformations you have been evading. If that’s the case, I hope you are forlorn, shivery, puzzled, and obsessive. Feelings like those may be the perfect fuel – the high-octane motivation that will launch your personal renaissance. I don’t often offer this counsel, Libra, so I advise you to take full advantage: Now is one of the rare times when your so-called negative emotions can catalyze redemption.

From what I can tell, your vigour is peaking. In recent weeks, you have been sturdy, hearty, stout, and substantial. I expect this surge of strength to intensify in the near future – even as it becomes more fluid and supple. In fact, I expect that your waxing power will teach you new secrets about how to wield your power intelligently. You may break your previous records for compassionate courage and sensitive toughness. Here’s the best news of all: You’re likely to be dynamic about bestowing practical love on the people and animal and things that are important to you.

The odds are higher than usual that you will be offered a boost or promotion in the coming weeks. This development is especially likely to occur in the job you’re doing or the career plans you’ve been pursuing. It could also be a factor at work in your spiritual life. You may discover a new teacher or teaching that could lift you to the next phase of your inner quest. There’s even a chance that you’ll get an upgrade on both fronts. So it’s probably a good time to check on whether you’re harboring any obstacles to success. If you find that you are, DESTROY THOSE RANCID OLD MENTAL BLOCKS WITH A BOLT OF PSYCHIC LIGHTNING.

The cosmos seems to be warming up to your charms. The stinginess it displayed toward you for a while is giving way to a more generous approach. To take advantage of this welcome development, you should shed any fear-based beliefs you may have adopted during the recent shrinkage. For instance, it’s possible you’ve begun to entertain the theory that the game of life is rigged against you, or that it is inherently hard to play. Get rid of those ideas. They’re not true, and clinging to them would limit the game of life’s power to bring you new invitations. Open yourself up wherever you have closed down.

Are any of your allies acting like they’ve forgotten their true purpose? If so, you have the power to gently awaken them from their trances and help them re-focus. Is it possible you have become a bit too susceptible to the influences of people whose opinions shouldn’t really matter that much to you? If so, now is a good time to correct that aberration. Are you aware of having fallen under the sway of trendy ideas or faddish emotions that are distorting your relationship with your primal sources? If so, you are hereby authorized to free yourself from their hold on you.

Now would be a favorable time to reveal that you are in fact a gay socialist witch who believes good poetry provides a more reliable way to understand reality than the opinions of media pundits – unless, of course, you are not a gay socialist witch, etc., in which case you shouldn’t say you are. But I do advise you to consider disclosing as much as possible of your true nature to anyone with whom you plan to be intimately linked in the future and who is missing important information about you. It’s high time to experiment with being more completely yourself.
