YOUR CITY CITY SHORTS // EDUCATION MINISTER FIRES VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD

Education Minister Mike Bernier fired the Vancouver School Board Monday morning, hours before trustees were expected to vote on the 2016/17 school budget, which was supposed to have been passed by the end of June. Bernier said trustees were fired because they failed to comply with the School Act and adopt a balanced budget on time. “This step has been taken despite the possibility that the board may now be willing to pass a balanced budget. It is impossible to have any confidence that a potential last-minute change of position on the district budget signals a fundamental change in the attitude which has so far led the board to refuse to follow the law,” Bernier said at a press conference. “What we have witnessed from the Vancouver School Board is a misplaced focus on political tactics rather than responsible stewardship.” Special advisor Peter Milburn has been looking into how trustees have

been governing the district. Bernier received a draft version of that report Saturday, which he said prompted him to dismiss the board. The report was delayed after the VSB’s entire senior management team went on sick leave amid allegations of bullying.WorkPlace BC is looking into those allegations. Bernier said he has no confidence in any decision the board has made up to this point. Dianne Turner, a former superintendent with the Delta school district, has been appointed the trustee in charge of the Vancouver school district. She will be in place for a minimum of a year, according to Bernier. The special advisor’s report is expected to be released to the public. Bernier said he wanted to release the report on Monday, but it’s the subject of a privacy complaint, which was filed by Vision Vancouver trustee Patti Bacchus. He said the report will be released once the Privacy Commissioner has completed that investigation. –Staff reporter,Vancouver Courier

Food security is important for humans and other animals David Suzuki Science Matters @DavidSuzuki

As leaves change colour and drop from trees, and a chill in the air signals the approach of winter, many of us are thinking of the fall harvest and hearty soups and dishes that will soon warm our bellies. Not everyone is lucky enough to enjoy such thoughts. About four million Canadians – including more than a million children – lack food security, defined as reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. In Canada, people from low-income households and indigenous communities are the most likely to suffer from food insecurity. Fruit, vegetables and other fresh food must often be flown into remote indigenous communities, leading to alarmingly high sticker prices that make healthy diet choices unaffordable. A 2016 report by Food Secure Canada found the average monthly cost to feed a family of four in three remote northern reserve communities of Fort Albany, Attawapiskat and Moose Factory is $1,793.40, based

on 67 standard food items (the Revised Northern Food Basket), and that on-reserve households in Fort Albany must spend at least half their median monthly income on a basic nutritious diet. Food insecurity takes on an even starker meaning in the community of Grassy Narrows, Ontario. In the 1960s, the provincial government allowed a pulp and paper company to dump more than 10 tonnes of mercury into the Wabigoon River system. Despite recent science showing it can be cleaned up, the government has refused calls to remedy the situation.Toxic mercury levels still exist in the watershed. It travels up the food chain, bio-accumulating in fish that Grassy Narrows community members rely on for subsistence. Consumption of toxic fish has resulted in high rates of mercury poisoning, affecting not only community members’ food choices but also their rights to carry out traditional livelihoods. Sadly, it’s not just humans who are affected by mismanagement of food systems and the ecosystems of which they are a part.Wildlife feel the impacts as well. The primary threats of habitat loss and degradation faced by some of Canada’s at-

risk species are compounded by food insecurity. Take the monarch butterfly. Its caterpillars’ sole food source is milkweed, yet milkweed has long been eradicated in Canada as a noxious weed. (It was only removed from the noxious weed list in Ontario, its main migration thoroughfare in Canada, in 2013.) Milkweed scarcity is even worse in the American Midwest’s corn belt, where herbicide-tolerant corn and soy crops treated with glyphosate (Roundup), have all but eliminated the plants from vast swaths of land that once provided an essential food source for monarchs. According to Monarch Watch, since 1996, 29.5 million acres of land not previously used for agricultural purposes were put into corn and soybean production. In 2007, the US Congress passed the Clean Energy Act, creating a market for ethanol. The demand for corn spiked to an all-time high. Farmers pulled land out of conservation and planted corn wherever they could. Corn is also used to feed livestock, especially hogs and poultry, which is then eaten by us. The impacts of our harvesting and consumption patterns on land are mir-

rored in the ocean. This year’s sockeye salmon run in BC was the lowest in recorded history. Salmon, enjoyed by many of us, and an essential food source for many indigenous communities, are also a staple for numerous wildlife species, including bears, eagles and whales. This year’s low salmon numbers led to the closure of commercial and First Nations fisheries on the important Fraser River sockeye run. South Coast chinook had similarly poor returns. Beyond what this means for salmon fishers and indigenous communities, 82 endangered southern resident killer whales depend on chinook salmon to survive. Globally, social justice organizations such as Oxfam note that human hunger is not and need never be inevitable. It’s caused by poverty and inequality, not scarcity. We produce more than enough to feed all people on the planet. Surely it’s one of the fundamental challenges of our time to focus our considerable intelligence on altering our consumption and harvesting patterns so that all who share this small blue Earth – two-legged, four-legged, winged and finned – can enjoy food security. # 7-65! From Meter Maids to Parking Enforcement:

We Celebrate 40 Years It was a different time when Branca Verde donned her strappy heels and skirt uniform to issue parking tickets in Vancouver’s downtown. Smoking was commonplace at City Hall, and Cambie’s #19 bus was the only way to get downtown. In 1982, Branca was 22, and one of about a dozen full-time meter checkers at the City of Vancouver. Vancouver’s Parking Enforcement Program was six years old.

Jimmy Jeong Photographer | Videographer

These women - they were all women were hired, given field training, and issued two yards of scratchy fabric to make their uniforms. Then, they hit the streets, rotating through different routes each day.

4 W October 20 - October 26, 2016

Back then, the team was so small that they soon became best friends. They spent their lunches on the beach at English Bay. Almost all of them made it to Branca’s bridal shower. And they were innovative. When downtown workers started rubbing out chalk lines on their tires to extend their parking, this team came up with a plan to put a Smartie on top of the wheel, too. If the Smartie was there when they came back, they issued a ticket. Now, things are much more official. Meter Checkers (and before that, Meter Maids!) have become Parking Enforcement Officers (PEOs). Long gone are the days when people would sing The Beatles’ “Lovely Rita Meter Maid” as Branca walked by. Today, David Joy is a PEO on the evening shift. Vancouver’s Parking Enforcement Officers do much more now. They enforce the removal of abandoned vehicles, school parking limits, and even water conservation.

They ensure streets are cleared for the removal of leaves in winter, and they report stolen vehicles. Most importantly for David, they enforce all safety laws like keeping corners clear at intersections, access to fire hydrants, and clearance of bike lanes. No longer do they have to go to court for ticket disputes. Instead, they take notes and pictures, and send it to adjudication if necessary. It’s almost all electronic. Today, PEOs are now 64% per cent male – and they all wear the same gender-neutral uniform. David explains that parking enforcement is about supporting safety and providing service. It’s annoying to have a car partially block your driveway, and unsafe when school kids can’t get dropped off easily. Officers always keep an eye out for dogs and even children locked alone in cars. At rush hour, an ever-increasing amount of drivers need to get to their destination on time. Parked cars along thoroughfares are more than an annoyance they create bottlenecks that back up public transportation and single vehicles alike. In retail districts, David knows that making sure parking spaces are available for the next shopper supports local businesses. David is proud of how far the profession has come. “We’re here to make Vancouver a better place. We want to treat everyone fairly. You need integrity to do this job successfully.” That seems to be one of two things that haven’t changed over the years. Both Branca and David believe that attitude is everything. The other thing? The radios are still really heavy!

Kozakura not just another izakaya Anya Levykh Nosh

@FoodgirlFriday KOZAKURA

280 Carrall 604-720-3145 KozakuraGastown.ca Open Mon.-Sat., 5pm-late. Open for lunch Mon.-Fri., 11:30am-3pm. Vancouver has plenty of izakayas: little (and a few not-so-little) Japanese gastropubs that focus on small plates, designed to pair well with beer or sake. They’ve become almost as common here as the casual sushi joint on the corner. High-end restaurants like Masayoshi and Minami are also on the rise, finally giving the long-standing Tojo’s some

worthy competition. But when Bill Robitaille, owner of Gastown’s three-year-old Notturno, announced last spring that he was closing his popular Italian-themed watering hole and re-opening it as the new “kappo”-style Kozakura, it was like a bell ringing out after being thoroughly cleaned. A new note had been sounded. Kappo, which originally meant “to cook” in Japanese, has come to refer to the experience of eating what a chef prepares right in front of you. This style of cooking favours fresh, seasonal ingredients and a variety of preparation methods, from steamed and grilled to baked and fried. Kappo is about a holistic tasting experience, most often showcased through an omakase menu. The physical change

from Notturno to Kozakura reflects the change in food focus. Gone are the dark wood columns; in their place are white wainscoting under green-grey walls, bright spots of colour from modernist prints, and natural-wood tabletops flanked by comfortable padded chairs. Robitaille may seem an unlikely contender to step up as owner of Vancouver’s first kappo eatery, but despite his French-Italian roots, he has a long-nurtured love affair with Japanese cuisine. Along with chef de cuisine Keith Allison, Robitaille has created a sake-friendly menu that doesn’t veer off the classic track, but it does use some new techniques and ingredients in the presentation. Dishes range from $6 to $12, with the omakase menu available for $45, $60,

$75 or $90. Allison brings his Japanese roots to the well-crafted options, with a minimalist hand and a solid attention to detail. Lightly charred slivers of octopus rest on a thick smear of eggplant and shiro (chickpea) purée, topped with thick grilled rings of onion ($9). Chawanmushi ($6) – heavily studded with chicken thigh, side-stripe shrimp and shitakes – has surprising and pleasing notes of yuzu and shaved black truffle. Kinmedai Suimono (golden-eyed Japanese snapper) is steamed, and served in a clear and remarkably fragrant dashi broth ($12). Sablefish ($12) is marinated in miso and sake lees before being seared, then topped with smoked woodland mushrooms and crisp, lightly pickled radish. The menu ranges from the

light (a rotating sashimi plate, a taster of local sea urchin) to the more robust, like Tsukune ($10): dense meatballs topped with teriyaki sauce and a slowcooked egg that runs like a river over the juicy beef. There’s even dessert (although, at the time of this writing, just one): a lavish dark-chocolate mousse dusted with pure matcha powder ($7). The sake list is full of finds. A rocks glass full of Yamahai Ume (pluminfused) sake is a brilliant aperitif, and a steal at $10 a glass. Hichi Hon Yari “Seven Spears” Tama Sake Junmai is another gem (and also a bargain at the same price); drier than the plum sake, there are some beautifully earthy and acidic notes from this 15thgeneration sake-maker. There’s also a well-rounded whisky/bourbon list, as well

as a couple of options for shochu, the Japanese distilled spirit usually made from rice, sweet potato or barley. But, seriously, the sake list is worth some serious exploration. Our server, Keisuke, was able to give us detailed descriptions of each sake, successfully guiding us in our choices. Kozakura is now open for lunch, meaning day drinking is possible and necessary. The weekday menu focuses on donburi and bento boxes, so you’ll have to come back in the evening to have the full kappo experience. Trust me: you won’t mind. W Food: !!!!! Service: !!!!! @MichaelaWine

Thank you, readers, for your messages in response to my Cheap Thrills column last month. Clearly, it hit the spot with many of you – which isn’t surprising, as more than 30 per cent of wines sold in BC are less than $13 a bottle. Finding satisfying wines at these price points is like hitting the jackpot, and I love sharing the winnings. Despite a large selection, though, relatively few compel me to recommend them. When I drink a glass of wine, I want it to taste like the grape it’s made from or recall the region from which it hails. It should refresh my palate, make me hungry and, most of all, entice me to take another sip. Otherwise, I’d rather have a gin and tonic. I promise to continue seeking out sub-$13 wines. In the meantime, the price points just above this bargain territory offer fertile hunting ground for wine lovers. The $15-$20 price band represents about 25 per cent of wine sales, and spending in this category continues to grow. (Conversely, sales of

And while the shelf prices quoted below don’t include tax, I’ve calculated it so you’ll hand over no more than a $20 bill when you reach the till. It’s been a few days since the BC Beer Awards, and I have to say, I’m still buzzing. And not just from all the amazing beer on offer (well, that’s part of it, I’m sure). The BC Beer Awards are great example of what makes our local beer scene so amazing. Obviously, there’s the beer, but really, it’s the people. I’m always amazed at how kind and supportive everyone in the industry is; instead of fierce competition and animosity amongst rivals, there’s nothing but support, encouragement and mentorship. And the beer drinking public are the ultimate benefactors of this. When BC breweries help each other out, the result is better beer and a stronger BC beer scene. That also makes BC beer more marketable abroad, and helps make BC a global craft beer destination. A rising tide truly floats all boats. As for the awards themselves, Steamworks once again took home Best in Show (this is the third time they’ve won) for their Flagship IPA, with head brewer Julia Hanlon becoming the first female brewer (but certainly not the last) to win the coveted award. Steamworks took home a total of six awards, including three gold medals for Best Kolsch (Steamworks Kolsch), Best Scottish and Irish Ales (Classic Scotch) and Best North American IPA (Flagship IPA). Dageraad (whom I consider my hometown beer, as I grew up in Forest Grove, just a few blocks away from their brewery in Burnaby) were big winners as well, with three golds (Best Smoke and Wood Aged Beer –Entropy Series No. 1; Best Specialty IPA – Blonde IPA; Best Belgian Strong Ale – Dageraad Blonde), a silver and a bronze. Nelson Brewing also took home three gold medals, winning in the British Brown Ale (After Dark Ale), North American Light Beer (Hooligan Organic Pilsner), and North American Blonde Ale (Organic Wild Honey Ale) categories. A number of fledgling breweries were also recognized with gold medals this year, including Barkerville Brewing in Quesnel, Foamer’s Folly in Pitt Meadows and Gladstone Brewing in Courtenay, while Vancouver’s Boombox Brewing won the CBC People’s Choice Award. Field House won the coveted Rookie of theYear award, which was well deserved. It’s

Making healthy choices can actually be affordable and not that time consuming.Whether you’re living on a very low income or just trying to save a buck to survive in this big, beautiful, pricey city of ours, there are some great little hacks to help you get on the right track and stay on budget.

Whether you shop at Costco or your local grocery store, bulk foods are the way to go. Not only are they more economical; they also reduce the use of unnecessary packaging, thus having a positive impact on the environment. Buying in bulk is especially great for the following foods: beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, flours, dried fruit, spices, coffee, tea and grains. Of course, I urge you to choose locally sourced, fair trade and

organic whenever possible.

SLOW COOKER

Slow cookers are one of the best inventions, in my opinion. You can get one at a thrift shop for next to nothing and use it to make food all year round. Fall and winter are the best seasons in which to experiment. Make soups, stews, chili, pasta dishes, and even baked potato. Prep doesn’t take too long, and then you can just set it and forget it! Double up recipes and freeze some of it for future meals. Invest in a Thermos for meals on the go that stay hot longer.

NON-PERISHABLES

While I do encourage you to always buy fresh and cook using raw ingredients at home, there are going to be times when you want something quick that you can just heat up. Soups, chilis and other foods are often sold in Tetra Paks (therefore, without the potential contamination from an aluminum can). Of course, these foods will be no match for that homemade batch you made last week. W , &-- 0)(1 +--'*1 2-/(4- 30 #-10-".-2%/!$

Positively 4th Avenue: The rise and fall of Canada’s hippie mecca Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown

@GrantLawrence

“King of the Hippies.” That’s what the caption read under the photo of a young David Wisdom, snapped on West 4th Avenue in the summer of 1967. It was the “Summer of Love,” which blossomed in Vancouver more than just about anywhere else in the world outside of San Francisco. You’ve likely heard about Kitsilano’s hippie heyday, but let it not be understated: for a few short years, Vancouver, and most especially West 4th Avenue between Burrard and MacDonald streets, was indeed the hippie capital of Canada. The movement rocked this formerly conservative logging town to its roots, and changed our city forever. The photo of David Wisdom (who went on to a 30-year-career at CBC Radio) was part of a larger story on Vancouver’s counter-culture, which appeared in Japan’s equivalent to Life magazine. Wisdom was in a local band called the French Hand Laundry and the writer’s tour guide. The only problem was, David Wisdom never considered himself a hippie. “I was a rocker,” proclaims Wisdom, who currently resides on Salt Spring Island, itself a garden of retired original hippies. “I liked the Jefferson Airplane from San Francisco. I saw them at the Kitsilano Theatre in 1966,” referring to what is often considered the city’s first “rock” concert. Locally, Wisdom dug bands like the Painted Ship, the Tom Northcott Trio, and the Seeds of Time. “I lived at a pretty notorious place in Kits called ‘the Peace House,’ at 3148 Point Grey Road. The Grateful Dead stayed there when they came to town and would walk around the house naked. Ginger Baker, the drummer from Cream, slept over when he was in town too. I guess the Japanese magazine thought I was a hippie because I was the guy with the fourthlongest hair in Vancouver.” The longest-hair-on-adude-award went to Doug

THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT

Much to the shock of those that include “Jolly” John Tanner, marijuana is still illegal in Canada 50 years later, and yet there’s a medicinal marijuana dispensary on every corner. Our pot culture, for better or worse, can be traced in pretty much a straight line right back to the hippies.

You could stir up a potent argument that our city’s appetite for vegetarianism, organic food, alternative medicine, massage therapy, and our blinding obsession with yoga, all stretch from West 4th Avenue.

In 1969, one of Greenpeace’s first office spaces was at West 4th Avenue and Maple, sharing the space with SPEC (the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation). Prominent members of Greenpeace founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Years later, the Green Party of Canada first sprouted at Trafalgar and 6th. David Suzuki was a professor of genetics at UBC from 1963 onwards, and has remained in Kits. Former CFUN DJ Terry David Mulligan hangs out with with Frank Zappa in Vancouver in 1969. Contributed photo Hawthorne, a West 4th legend. Now deceased, Hawthorne came up again and again in conversation about Kitsilano’s hippie past. “Doug was a thin, cool guy with a big belt buckle and hair down to his waist,” remembers Wisdom. “It was Doug who was really the king of the West 4th scene.” Hawthorne ran the Psychedelic Shop, Vancouver’s first-ever hippie emporium, and one of several hippie-friendly joints that began to pop up on or near West 4th Avenue in the 1960s: the Village Bistro (a coffee house that doubled as a venue), the Black Swan, Rohan’s Records (which eventually became a live music venue called Rohan’s Rockpile), the Blind Owl, the Last Chance, Positively 4th Street, and the Naam, among others. Longtime Vancouver journalist Lynne McNamara was freshly graduated from UBC in the mid-’60s and working as a teacher in the Fraser Valley when flower power hit full bloom on West 4th. “I was a weekend hippie,” says McNamara. “I remember beautiful, hot summers, the smell of pot in the air, lots of long hair, women swirling and twirling in long Afghan dresses, and everybody being stoned out of their minds. People were swarming here,

especially from the States, and it made it all so exciting. From my experience, it was an open and accepting place for women.” Conveniently located in the centre of the scene was CFUN, Vancouver’s number one radio station, right at the corner of West 4th and Cypress. “Jolly” John Tanner landed a gig at the station in 1964 at age 21, and would literally call the play-by-play of Vancouver’s love revolution. “What was really incredible was that it happened so fast. Suddenly, by the early spring of 1967, hippies, flower power and free love was everywhere,” says Tan-

ner. “Vancouver had much more in common with the West Coast USA than with Toronto or Montreal at that time. California was a huge influence. By 1967, Tanner was not only working on West 4th, but was becoming fully immersed in the culture. “I lived in a house with a bunch of people at Maple and 3rd. “One night we smoked some herb in the bathroom and headed out to a show at the Russian Hall, probably to see the Collectors.

PUBS AND GRUB

Three of the first pub licenses in Vancouver were located on West 4th, and they’re still there: Bimini’s, Darby D. Dawes, and Jerry’s Cove (now called the Cove). And yes, the Naam vegetarian restaurant remains, at 2724 West 4th Avenue, since 1968, with service still so charmingly slow it feels like you must have ordered your veggie burger sometime around 1970.

Vancouver’s Human Be-In Festival, held on March 26, 1967, was inspired by the first Be-In in San Francisco held two months earlier. Nestled on the Kitsilano shore, our distinctive landmark museum reopened in 1968, and has since done a wonderful job keeping our past alive. Check out their current exhibit (and chapter two to this story): Vancouver in the Seventies, on now until February 2017.

“We got in my ’53 Chevy to drive to the gig – which was only a couple of blocks away – and “A Day In The Life” by the Beatles came on. I started tripping out to it so much that I thought my car was flying through the air. I pulled over and said ‘I have to walk the rest of the way.’” Tanner went on to many more radio gigs and a near-50-year career at the Vancouver Planetarium. The Russian Hall, at 2114 West 4th (still there to this day), is cited by many as a primary reason the hippie scene revolved around Kitsilano (cheap rent, large houses, and a world-class beach also helped). It was also known as the Kitsilano Concert Theatre, the Overtime, and one of the venues of the Afterthought, an infamous psychedelic concert series by a young promoter named Jerry Cruz. “I’m the reason the hippie scene existed on 4th Avenue,” states Cruz as a matter of fact. “I did the gigs at the Russian Hall, and that’s why the kids came to Kits, to see my shows. I really wanted to control 4th Avenue, so much so that I would pay Doug Hawthorne to close up his shop and come and do the lights at the Afterthought just so the hippies couldn’t hang around his place.” Kruz also booked the bands at the first Be-In music festival in Stanley Park, in March of 1967. “The only local DJ who supported me was Timo-

thy Burge, who is now Pamela Burge.” However, not all Vancouverites were feeling the love. Former Vancouver mayor Tom Campbell, now deceased, assumed office in 1967 and waged war with the peaceniks for much of his tumultuous time at City Hall. “He made life hell for the hippies,” says MacNamara. “He was as straight as the hippies were wild, and hated any guy with hair below the earlobe.” “Despite all the great things that were going on in the scene, there was a real paranoia about getting caught with pot,” remembers Tanner. “Raids happened all the time.” Mayor Campbell’s enforcer was a notorious narcotics officer whose name still sends a shiver down many an aging hippie’s spine: Sgt. Abe Snidanko, who was later famously lampooned by Cheech and Chong. “He was ruthless,” says Tanner. “The mayor believed I was corrupting the youth of Vancouver, and so he sent Snidanko after me,” states Cruz. Snidanko busted Cruz twice for pot possession. The second time, the court sentenced Cruz to eight months in prison for “a couple of baggies; nothing really, but they wanted to make an example out of me.” Cruz’s incarceration still infuriates him, and marked the end of the Afterthought concerts, but not the Kitsilano hippies. Renowned broadcaster Terry David Mulligan returned to his hometown

right in the middle of the Summer of Love. He accepted a DJ gig at CFUN alongside Tanner. He was immediately shunned by the hippies. “You have to imagine: I was barely two years out of the RCMP Academy, which I quit soon after graduation, because of my burning love for rock ’n’ roll radio.” After a series of DJ gigs around the prairies, TDM arrived onto West 4th Avenue just as the Afterthought was shut down. “Everyone was convinced I was a narc. Entire rooms would clear when I would walk in. People wanted nothing to do with me!” Like Wisdom, TDM never considered himself a hippie. “I lived right on 4th, a block away from the Russian Hall,” reminiscences Mulligan. “A parade of hippies went by my front door, day in, day out, and they were as stoned as I was straight. I found it very depressing. It’s never a period of time I take pleasure from, simply because so many minds were lost as the decade progressed and the drugs got harder. It became some ugly shit.” Many who lived through the West 4th scene agree that harder drugs were one of the reasons the scene fell apart, but there were other factors. “We really were connected to the California scene,” says Tanner. “So when things like Altamont and Charles Manson happened, it threw a pall over everything. Free love was over, the trust was gone, and the drugs really did get bad. Acid, heroin, people OD’ing all over the place, and then Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin all died within a year of each other. That felt like the end.” Rent in Kits was also on the rise. “It was very exciting for a few years, but by the early ‘70s it was pretty much over,” says Wisdom. “The true hippies moved to the country: the Sunshine Coast, the Kootenays, or the Gulf Islands. Lots of Americans just went home.” 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, and the rumours are billowing like pot smoke of some major events to mark the occasion, possibly even a 50th anniversary Be-In. You can bet that many of the West 4th hippie survivors will be making the scene, half a century later. Peace out. W

Shopaholics: It’s time for a fresh look at West 4th Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor

As a fairly recent arrival to Vancouver,West 4th in Kits has never really been on my radar for proper fashion and beauty shopping. Gastown, Yaletown and Main Street are home to plenty of interesting indie stores, while downtown and the malls have the chain stores covered. Kits, it seemed to me, didn’t have much to offer people who like style with a bit of edge. But a slew of openings in the past year has led me to take another look. And what I’ve found is a buoyant scene with a mix of multinational and indie shops (in defiance of high rents) selling wares that will satisfy even the most fashion-forward customer.

RYU

It’s athletic gear, Jim, but not as we know it. RYU (it stands for RespectYour Universe) is a US-based mixed-martial-arts brand with a “beautiful tough” (their words) aesthetic.Think clean lines, interesting design elements and lots of black. Tops, bottoms and outerwear are suitable for running and gym work as well as martial arts, and there are also some cool but practical bags. RYU arrived in Kits in November 2015 – the first one in Canada – and additional outlets will open soon on Thurlow Street and at Park Royal. (1745West 4th, RYU.com)

MIDDLE SISTER

If you’re a fan of quirky Korean fashion, head here. Owner Linda Sin set it up a year ago, and what you’ll find is an eclectic selection of clothing and accessories from around the world, but with a particular focus on Canadian and Korean brands. Many of these are exclusive to Middle Sister, which means you won’t bump into a dozen other women wearing the same outfit. Sin

SAVOIE

Kitsilano staple XO Bella became Savoie at the beginning of July, in tribute to Jeannette Savoie, the late grandmother of owner Sara Byblow. “She recently passed and was the last generation of Savoies,” explains Byblow. “It was not only a way for her name to live on, but also the most fitting [name], as she was this saucy little French lady with the best style.” The chic shop is inspired by bloggers and their sense of wanderlust, and is popular with people who are looking for unique pieces they’ve seen on Pinterest and Instagram. “We bring in brands from Los Angeles, NewYork and Australia, and have little to no repeats, so there’s always something new.” (2070West 4th, SavoieClothing.com)

JACKSON ROWE

Designer Julia Lefeaux established her wholesale boho-scarf label five years ago and opened her first

storefront in June. Jackson Rowe has the Coachella vibe you’d expect from a hippieesque brand: Rowe sells her own scarves, skirts and rompers, as well as pieces from local brands such as Harlow Skin Co. and wallhanging maker Saige & Skye. Lefeaux wanted her space to be a complete lifestyle concept, with no particular clientele in mind. “We have a little something for everyone,” she says. “My grandma loves our Olive Scarf and my guy friends are really into our capes these days.” (2194 West 4th, JacksonRowe.ca)

alongside locally produced skin- and body-care, and it also hosts workshops and events. (2066West 4th, SilkRoadTeaStore.com)

PURE BARRE

The US’s biggest barre chain arrived in Kits in March, offering ballet-based workouts as an alternative to the area’s many spin and

yoga studios. The workout is an absolute killer – minuscule movements, maximum muscle ache – but is low impact, so it’s suitable for everyone, no matter what their physical shape. Pure Barre also sells its ownbrand workout clothing, and accessories such as the all-important grippy socks, which prevent you from fall-

ing over mid-plié. (1907W. 4th, PureBarre.com) W Aileen Lalor is the resident beauty expert at VitaDaily.com, Canada’s premiere fashion and lifestyle newsletter. For more stories like this, check out the website and subscribe.

SILK ROAD TEA

Vancouverites probably aren’t going to ditch coffee anytime soon, but tea shops and salons are having a moment. Victoria-based Silk Road is a local pioneer of the new-school tea brand, and its third store, in Kits, opened in June. Founder Daniela Cubelic has helped popularize tea tastings, and hers was one of the first North American brands to incorporate tea (a powerful antioxidant) into beauty products. The store stocks dozens of organic teas

David Lewis goes ‘Dirk Gently’

2016 a busy year for homegrown star who grew up in a local bar Sabrina Furminger Reel People @Sabrinarmf

David Lewis is a familiar face to film and television audiences, but long before he was a busy actor, he was a bona fide baby barfly. Lewis’ father was the lead bartender at The Waldorf; his mother was a waitress. If you were drinking at The Waldorf in the late ‘70s, you might have spotted Lewis toddling around under the watchful eye of his parents and his extended Waldorf family. “My dad proposed to my mom at The Waldorf. They had their reception at The Waldorf. I learned to walk at The Waldorf,” says Lewis in a recent phone interview. “The waitresses used to babysit me there when both of my parents were working.” The Waldorf was more than a second home for Lewis; it was also where he watched his father interact with patrons, and discovered that performing was in his DNA. “If you’re a good bartender, you’re a performer, and you’re really good at talking and listening,” says Lewis. “I would see my dad hold court, and I got my sense of humour from him.” Lewis has been a working actor since the ‘90s, when he entered the entertainment industry by way of commercials. He’s logged more than 200 acting credits in that time, including Motive, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Man of Steel, Lake Placid, Paycheck, and Harper’s Island. He starred in Shoes Off, a short film by Vancouver director Mark Sawers that won top honours at the Cannes Film Festival (“In my dad’s last

REVIEW // THE ACCOUNTANT

Starring Ben Stiller, Anna Kendrick Directed by Gavin O’Connor Shifting effortlessly from number-crunching to bonecrunching, Ben Affleck stars in The Accountant as an autistic math genius who also happens to work for various criminal organizations. In 2015, Lewis won a Leo Award for Best Performance by a Male in a Web Series for his role as a stay-at-home dad in Parked (binge it at ParkedTheShow.com). But as far as years go, 2016 has been the busiest of Lewis’ career. This fall, he can be spotted on multiple networks inhabiting a wide range of characters, including a “shadowy figure with a silencer” on Rogue, an army major on Travelers, and an over-the-top magazine editor in Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. Arguably the most impressive of his upcoming roles is on BBC America’s highly anticipated Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. This television adaptation of Douglas Adams’ novel series – penned by

Max Landis and produced by the people behind TheWalking Dead – stars Samuel Barnett as the titular holistic detective who investigates cases involving the supernatural. The locally shot series also stars Elijah Wood as Dirk’s reluctant assistant, and features a long list of local actors in key roles, including Michael Eklund, Zak Santiago, Viv Leacock, and Osric Chau as a quartet of anarchist vampires known as the Rowdy 3 (see why that’s funny?). Lewis recurs as Agent Weedle, a character he describes as “new to the field. He’s used to being behind the desk. He’s more of a clerical agent. He’s out in the field with his partner, who is the alpha male of the relationship – a Tom Cruise character – and I’m just so happy

to be in the field with this other agent.” Lewis pauses, clearly choosing his next words carefully in order to avoid spoilers. He delivers them slowly. “Through a series of events, something happens to my character, which changes him drastically, 181 degrees.” Showrunner Landis sets the tone for Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, according to Lewis. “There’s a manic-ness to this. There’s a lot of humour involved. There’s a lot of tension.” Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency represents an exciting get for the Vancouver industry, according to Lewis. “All of the actors, we’d be on set and looking at each other and saying, ‘Can you believe we get to work on this?’ This is the kind of thing you’d watch on HBO and go, ‘Boy, I’d love

flick is actually a decent little thriller wrapped in an intriguing character study, thanks to the lead star’s commitment to the role and some rather snappy editing. Accounting savant Christian Wolff (Affleck), on a break from the crime world, takes a job with a legitimate robotics company to investigate some major financial discrepancies discovered by an employee (Kendrick). As the mystery is unravelled and a conspiracy exposed, the body count starts to rise. Mean-

while, a Treasury Department investigator (JK Simmons) and his protégé (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) are hot on his trail. Adding to these narrative tangents are flashbacks to Christian’s troubled childhood dealing with his condition. These sequences, though heavy-handed, make for surprisingly strong depth and offer several notes of poignancy that ground an otherwise schlocky affair. Affleck is certainly up to the task here, providing plenty of chiseled dramatic

heft while effectively beating the living crap out of numerous baddies. Kendrick is also fun to watch as she delivers her deadpan lines. (Unfortunately, her potentially romantic part gets ignored halfway through the movie.) The Accountant may be occasionally ridiculous (we won’t get into the eye-rolling twists) and the melodrama is even a tad comic at times, but beneath the flaws lies a refreshing story with lean pacing and a taut script. –Thor Diakow

to work on that one day.’” Lewis is a true-blue genre-hopper, equally adept at (and admittedly happy with) roles in comedy, drama, horror, and sci-fi. When he first started out, he was “always the nice boyfriend, or the computer programmer, or the nerdy guy,” says Lewis. “Then I hit my late 30s, early 40s, and I suddenly became the corporate douchebag: the guy who would cheat on his wife and have these financial dealings that were shady.” Right now, Lewis muses that he seems to be booking mainly “mean and ugly” characters – a trend he claims to savour. “I look so clean-cut, there’s a really nice dichotomy of having me do terrible things,” he says. “I’m not the guy you would expect doing that terrible thing.”

Despite his current bounty of high-profile bookings, Lewis remains committed to the hometown indie scene, which he credits for feeding his soul creatively. He can currently be seen in The Goodnight Kiss, a short film he cowrote with director Laura Adkin. The Goodnight Kiss premiered earlier this month at the Edmonton International Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Comedy Short. Earlier this week, it had its American premiere at the Austin Film Festival. W Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency premieres Oct. 23 on BBC America. A new life for Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace GREGORY ADAMS @gregoryadamsbc

When Against Me! guitarist/ vocalist Laura Jane Grace answers her cell phone to speak with Westender, she reports that although the fall shows her band have been playing in support of new album Shape Shift with Me have been great so far, the tour hasn’t been without its obstacles. Speaking from a Virginia stop just ahead of soundcheck, she’s been eyeballing the Weather Channel’s hurricane watch on her home state of Florida, where the quartet is due to play next. After discussing the horrific death and devastation Hurricane Matthew put on Haiti, the concerned frontwoman lightens the mood by discussing an injury that took place on the band’s tour with Bad Religion hours before the first show even started. “I was putting clothes into a dryer and my whole lower back went into spasms and I collapsed on the ground in pain,” Grace explains. “I couldn’t get back up. I had to call my tour manager, and Atom [Willard, drums] and James [Bowman, guitar] lifted me up and put me on a road case. This was two hours be-

fore set time. Luckily, Bad Religion had a massage therapist with them who immediately went to work on my back. I got through the set. I’m definitely on the mend now.” Beyond her physical setback, life is going well for Grace this fall. While she’s been logging on-stage hours and studio time with Against Me! for close to 20 years, this might be the most productive time of her career so far. In addition to issuing the band’s seventh studio full-length in September, she’s about to see publication of Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout, a memoir exploring her early life, the rise of Against Me!, and her coming out as a transgender woman in 2012. Grace notes she was lucky enough to have been a longtime journal writer, making the years-long process of putting together the self-reflective autobiography a bit easier. By comparison, coming up with ideas for Shape Shift with Me on the road (while supporting 2013’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues) was a breeze. “[Writing the memoir] was a really in-depth, arduous process that required a

Laura Jane Grace (second from right) and Against Me! play the Commodore Ballroom on Oct. 25 in support of their latest album, Shape Shift With Me. Contributed photo lot of reflection and a lot of looking back. In this weird way, I was using songwriting as the escape from that,” she says, noting that much of the new album touches on her recent experiences of “dating for the first time as an openly trans person,” following the dissolution of her seven-year marriage to Heather Hannoura in 2014. “In the past, any time I had ever approached any kind of relationship, I always had

this secret that I was holding in, this part of myself that I would deny,” she continues. “It’s been a new experience. Thinking about relationships and things about love through a trans lens was something that I was preoccupied with in a lot of ways while writing, because it was really relevant to me. I felt like I had a lot of questions and things to figure out with it.” As such, Shape Shift with Me morphs through various

interpersonal dynamics. The jangling, slamming “12:03” takes a look at long-distance feelings while on the road; “Crash” is a glam-rock ode to a hard-hitting crush; “Rebecca” is a joyful punk-pop piece about keeping things casual; “Norse Truth” is a harshly spat stomp about cutting someone out of your heart. “I guess the conclusion I reached is that emotions are genderless,” Grace theorizes. “All of it is a natural spectrum

of how you feel when you go through relationships. That was important to represent on the record. Each song is supposed to capture a phase of that, whether that’s the crush of falling in love, or the breakup and the sorrow.” As the conversation winds down, Grace is asked if she’s excited to hit the West Coast. While she spoke at an event in Victoria last month, it’s been over a year since the band came roaring through Vancouver. For timely reasons, she’s plenty pleased to be coming back to the city. “Going back to what I mentioned about fucking up my back, I’ve been looking forward to this show because I remember where we parked the bus [last time]. Right where you open the door, there was this massage place. That’s where I’ll be first thing in the morning.” While the tour may have started on an off-note, Against Me! are working the kinks out one date at a time. W Against Me! play the Commodore Ballroom on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Tickets $25 from Ticketmaster.

Dance artist Noam Gagnon dives into “eccentricity and follies and madness” in his latest project. Michel Dozois photo

Noam Gagnon may be best known as one half of anarchic ’90s dance phenom Holy Body Tattoo, but his exploration of the limits of dance has changed dramatically since his days of crafting single-minded, impenetrable punk ballets. In This Crazy Show, the powerhouse French Canadian dancer and choreographer (performing under his solo persona,Vision Impure, and armed with blonde wig) tackles a vulnerable, textural, four-part concept of transfor-

mation, transfiguration, gender and identity. The stage set features 16 disco balls, clips from classic ’70s superhero series The BionicWoman (which Gagnon adored as a child), a live accordion player and appearances by a mysterious Leigh Bowery-type figure. “I guess what I was aiming to do was create a succession of tableaus without any logical sense,” the Vancouver resident begins, with a laugh. “Trying to push eccentricity and follies and madness to its fullest. I wanted to create a landscape to speak about a man and love and a few other fucked-up things.

I find it more and more difficult, almost impossible,” the 53-year-old admits. “So having a team of people who are extremely different from the kind of world I lived in before, and the kind of work I’ve created and produced, was really crucial.” Lecourtois, in particular, brought out a side of Gagnon he had yet to test, even after almost four decades in dance. “Danielle is crazy in the most beautiful way,” Gagnon says, chuckling. “She just really pushed me to embrace [the process]. At one point she was saying, ‘We’re going to do theatre for children!’ And I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’… And we went and got some amazing clothes in second-hand shops and I was like, ‘No, no! I’m not putting that on.’ And she was like, ‘Put it on.What’s the safe word? “My work usually lives in the guts, in the viscera,” he adds, “and so this time I wanted to do something that was much more theatrical.” As if that isn’t enough, Gagnon says he even drew inspiration from the different states of plastic – which might, when you list it all together, seem like a grab bag of anything-goes artistry. But in Gagnon’s capable hands, it’s all rooted in the idea of exploring the fluidity of childhood, and how a single body and identity can morph to represent new states of being. “In terms of going into different gender roles and trying to find those different states, I was thinking about the word ‘play’ and how it relates to children: changing roles, personalities, imagining themselves to be a superhero or wearing their mother’s shoes or sister’s dress,” he explains. “It doesn’t necessarily define them; it’s just a state of being that they embrace without any judgment. There is something quite powerful about that state, where you can really allow yourself to recreate yourself at any time.” To find that place, Gagnon brought in a dynamic team of creative advisors: dramaturge James Fagan Tait (whom he previously partnered with in 2011’s madcap ThankYou,

CARNEY’S CORNER

woRlD seRIes Lots of Canadians are as serious about their sports as they are about one of the other greatest topics of conversation: real estate. Many folks have favourite condo buildings or areas of single family homes. They appreciate their personal updates from their professional realtor who knows what is of interest to them and their families and friends and ready to act quickly when an opportunity presents. Many locals accepted long ago that the single family lifestyle was out of reach in the areas they chose to live, work and play. Condo/apartment lifestyles were accepted decades ago and became the norm. Real estate practice in Vancouver has become much more complicated than the usual markets driven by births, deaths, marriages, divorces and transfers. The increasing pressure for space and available units in our communities has resulted in even greater demand for those downsizing, retiring, renting and being bought out/pushed out of their homes. The importance of teaming up with a seasoned local realtor in touch with all aspects of the business has never been more important. In addition to the life event planning that motivates most transactions residents now have to plan for unexpected relocation, potential loss of rental income, unexpected tax gains and the anxiety of securing affordable replacement properties whether they are owner occupiers investors or tenants. The depletion of stable living accommodations where the sense of certainty, safety and community is paramount, strikes at the very heart of the neighbourhood and threatens to destroy the very fabric of what the world has come to know and love as the West End. Great effort will be required from all stakeholders to ensure these fundamentals are not lost. BOOKS Continued from page 16 Who or what did you consult most for researching the historical basis for the book? Not many who’s but some of the bigger slave narratives like Frederick Douglass. I went back to Harriet Jacobs again, there’s a history of slavery called Bound for Canaan that came out a couple years ago that was really helpful in grounding me in the main contours of the railroad and then in the 1930s, the federal govern-

In the spring there is the convenient (no air required) ms Zaandam roundtrip Vancouver sailing, but if you’re looking to get away during the grey days of fall at a fabulous price it will be hard to beat this deal.

Why did you choose the voice of Cora, a young female slave, to tell the story of the Underground Railroad? It’s not clear what her age is, but once she gets off the plantation and starts learning how to read and have different interactions, her

idea of the world changes and her place in it. I had a few male protagonists in a row so I wanted to mix it up. One of the first narratives I read in college 30 years ago was Harriet Jacobs’, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. And I hadn’t done a mother-daughter relationship before, it allowed me to talk about a different experience of slavery from the male, which I thought I could do and it was more of a challenge. # *%- (6!18.,-5 &5$0-53 Fest runs Oct. 17-23. I am a 36-year-old woman who has never had a relationship last longer than a few months, and even then, those relationships were casual. When I look back on my dating past, or lack thereof, I wonder what the fuck is wrong with me? I don’t have a fear of commitment. I’m not a lunatic. I am not unattractive. Men will have crushes on me often, but it’s never the ones I want. What is happening? Is it men, or is it me? I want to give up. Everyone around me seems so happy in their relationships. I’m starting to think I will die alone, and no matter what anyone says, the thought of that scares the shit out of me.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you being alone forever is “just fine” and “totally feminist” and give you a whole regurgitated Chelsea Handler routine. I won’t do this for one reason: you don’t believe it yourself. If you haven’t convinced yourself out of this feeling at age 36, then I won’t in a few paragraphs. There is nothing wrong with wanting to share your life with someone. It’s been proven that swans mate for life. As do the grey wolves, black vultures, gibbons and the potbellied seahorse. Mating is survival in the animal world. We can’t prove animals love

like we love. Even Schistosoma mansoni worms “mate for life.” These parasites partner up and reproduce inside human bodies, infecting their hosts with “snail fever.”You want your own Schistosoma mansoni. That’s not as gross as it sounds. I’m going to tell you something you do not want to hear: the problem is you. It’s not who you are, or what you say, or what you wear, or how you smell. It’s your inability to give these men who are “never the ones you want” a fighting chance. I have had many friends like you, but one in particular stands out. I’ll call her Lola. Lola is a gorgeous, smart and picky little fucker who was constantly saying “no” to men who did not meet the standard she had made up in her mind. Even worse than just creating impossible standards, Lola would often crush on men who were already in relationships and lust after them in the way a young girl imagines marrying Devon Sawa every time she watches Now and Then. (Yeah, I was born in 1985.) Lola had plenty of men show interest in her, but because they didn’t play in a band or bead their own moccasins, she just wasn’t interested. Lola is my friend, so I obviously wanted to kick the stupid out of her skull and make her see that she was throwing away all these possible suitors, only to replace those potential dates with complaining and whining about being alone.

Lola was her own worst enemy. She prevented herself from getting what she wanted and it sounds like you are too. You can’t make someone like you, but you can take the stick out of your ass and go out for drinks with someone who likes you enough to ask you out.You can strip away your bullshit fantasy standards. I’m not saying “settle.” Going on one date is not “settling.” Do you really want to find someone who makes you happy, or has it been so long that you are petrified of failure? Have you lost the will to fuck and replaced it with complaining and Netflix? I know what you are thinking: why would you waste an evening on a date with a person you aren’t interested in? Because it’s just that. It’s only one evening of your life. What is the alternative? Sitting at home, one eye on the TV while the other follows your finger as you swipe “left” until the wine wears off? Promise me that the next time you get asked out, you will go? If he ends up an exKKK member with an addiction to child porn and a sixth toe, then I’m SORRY. At least you’ll have the world’s worst date story to kick off your spinster memoir. I wish you luck and love. Love, Mish W

Five Finds: Vancouver Home + Design Show THE DIY RUNWAY

Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK Keep the last weekend of this month clear: the Vancouver Home + Design Show (VancouverHomeAndDesignShow. com) returns Oct. 27-30, so make note of your makeover inspirations and hit the Vancouver Convention Centre for the best local and celebrity advice for nailing your dream-home style. Here are my top-five most anticipated exhibits at the show.

THE URBAN BARN MAIN STAGE

This is set to be the hottest design destination of the season. With expert advice on how our city’s homeowners can create their dream pad with ease, the guest lineup is sure to leave attendees with the insider know-how they need to live and entertain in style. Hitting the stage are Mia Parres and Rob Evans (HGTV Canada’s The Expandables), Colin and Justin (W Network’s Game of Homes and Cottage Life’s Cabin Pressure),Todd Talbot (HGTV Canada’s Love it or List itVancouver), frequent Cityline guest expert Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault, and some of Vancouver’s very own top talent, including Jamie Banfield and Kristina Hibbs.

A curated group of Vancouver’s top style influencers has brought its creative energies together to support the Habitat For Humanity Society of Greater Vancouver. Eleven local fashion bloggers, stylists, designers and boutique owners have been invited to participate in the Runway, for which they’ve been tasked with drawing inspiration from a favourite item in their own closet, which will then be used to repurpose a pre-loved home décor piece from ReStore Vancouver using a curated box of goods from

Rust-Oleum Consumer Brands Canada. Come see how fashion has influenced the designs of our city’s top tastemakers – literally.

Your Clunker is someone’s Classic.

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny In the 1980s, two performance artists did a project entitled A Year Tied Together at the Waist. For 12 months, Linda Montano and Tehching Hsieh were never farther than eight feet away from each other, bound by a rope. Hsieh said he tried this experiment because he felt very comfortable doing solo work, but wanted to upgrade his abilities as a collaborator. Montano testified that the piece “dislodged a deep hiddenness” in her. It sharpened her intuition and gave her a “heightened passion for living and relating.” If you were ever going to engage in a comparable effort to deepen your intimacy skills, Aries, the coming weeks would be a favourable time to attempt it.

In the coming weeks, would you prefer that we refer to you as “voracious”? Or do you like the word “ravenous” better? I have a feeling, based on the astrological omens, that you will be extra super eager to consume vast quantities of just about everything: food, information, beauty, sensory stimulation, novelty, pleasure and who knows what else. But please keep this in mind: Your hunger could be a torment or it could be a gift. Which way it goes may depend on your determination to actually enjoy what you devour. In other words, don’t get so enchanted by the hypnotic power of your longing that you neglect to exult in the gratification when your longing is satisfied.

When the wind blows at 10 miles per hour, a windmill generates eight times more power than when the breeze is five miles per hour. Judging from the astrological omens, I suspect there will be a similar principle at work in your life during the coming weeks. A modest increase in effort and intensity will make a huge difference in the results you produce. Are you willing to push yourself a bit beyond your comfort level in order to harvest a wave of abundance?

Cuthbert Collingwood (1748-1810) had a distinguished career as an admiral in the British navy, leading the sailors under his command to numerous wartime victories. He was also a good-natured softie whose men regarded him as generous and kind. Between battles, while enjoying his downtime, he hiked through the English countryside carrying acorns, which he planted here and there so the “Navy would never want for oaks to build the fighting ships upon which the country’s safety depended” (quoted in Life in Nelson’s Navy, by Dudley Pope). I propose that we make him your role model for the coming weeks. May his example inspire you to be both an effective warrior and a tender soul who takes practical actions to plan for the future.

Eighteenth-century musician Giuseppe Tartini has been called “the godfather of modern violin playing.” He was also an innovative composer who specialized in poignant and poetic melodies. One of his most famous works is the Sonata in G Minor, also known as the Devil’s Trill Sonata. Tartini said it was inspired by a dream in which he made a pact with the Devil to provide him with new material. The Infernal One picked up a violin and played the amazing piece that Tartini transcribed when he woke up. Here’s the lesson for you: He didn’t actually sell his soul to the Devil. Simply engaging in this rebellious, taboo act in the realm of fantasy had the alchemical effect of unleashing a burst of creative energy. Try it!

The planets have aligned in a curious pattern. I interpret it as meaning that you have cosmic permission to indulge in more self-interest and self-seeking than usual. So it won’t be taboo for you to unabashedly say, “What exactly is in it for me?” or “Prove your love, my dear” or “Gimmeee gimmeee gimmee what I want.” If someone makes a big promise, you shouldn’t be shy about saying, “Will you put that in writing?” If you get a sudden urge to snag the biggest piece of the pie, obey that urge.

In the course of her long career, Libran actress Helen Hayes won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony. Years before all that glory poured down on her, she met playwright Charles MacArthur at a party in a posh Manhattan salon. Hayes was sitting shyly in a dark corner. MacArthur glided over to her and slipped a few salted peanuts into her hand. “I wish they were emeralds,” he told her. It was love at first sight. A few years after they got married, MacArthur bought Hayes an emerald necklace. I foresee a metaphorically comparable event in your near future, Libra: peanuts serving as a promise of emeralds.

Welcome to the Painkiller Phase of your cycle. It’s time to relieve your twinges, dissolve your troubles and banish your torments. You can’t sweep away the whole mess in one quick, heroic purge, of course. But I bet you can pare it down by at least 33 per cent. (More is quite possible.) To get started, make the following declaration five times a day for the next three days: “I am grateful for all the fascinating revelations and indispensable lessons that my pain has taught me.” On each of the three days after that, affirm this truth five times: “I have learned all I can from my pain, and therefore no longer need its reminders. Goodbye, pain.” On the three days after that, say these words, even if you can’t bring yourself to mean them with complete sincerity: “I forgive everybody of everything.”

For the foreseeable future, you possess the following powers: to make sensible that which has been unintelligible, to find amusement in situations that had been tedious, to create fertile meaning where before there had been sterile chaos. Congratulations, Sagittarius! You are a firstclass transformer. But that’s not all. I suspect you will also have the ability to distract people from concerns that aren’t important, to deepen any quest that has been too superficial or careless to succeed, and to ask the good questions that will render the bad questions irrelevant.

In the past 11 months, did you ever withhold your love on purpose? Have there been times when you “punished” those you cared about by acting cold and aloof? Can you remember a few occasions when you could have been more generous or compassionate, but chose not to be? If you answered yes to any of those questions, the next three weeks will be an excellent time to atone. You’re in a phase of your astrological cycle when you can reap maximum benefit from correcting stingy mistakes. I suggest that you make gleeful efforts to express your most charitable impulses. Be a tower of bountiful power.

In 1415, a smaller English army defeated French forces at the Battle of Agincourt in northern France. Essential to England’s victory were its 7,000 longbowmen – archers who shot big arrows using bows that were six feet long. So fast and skilled were these warriors that they typically had three arrows flying through the air at any one time. That’s the kind of high-powered proficiency I recommend that you summon during your upcoming campaign. If you need more training to reach that level of effectiveness, get it immediately.

Let’s imagine your life as a novel. The most recent chapter, which you’ll soon be drawing to a close, might be called “The Redemption of Loneliness.” Other apt titles: “Intimacy with the Holy Darkness” or “The Superpower of Surrender” or “The End is Secretly the Beginning.” Soon you will start a new chapter, which I’ve tentatively dubbed “Escape from Escapism,” or perhaps “Liberation from False Concepts of Freedom” or “Where the Wild Things Are.” And the expansive adventures of this next phase will have been made possible by the sweet-andsour enigmas of the past four weeks.
