HELPING HANDOUTS?

So, we have homeless dying in the snow and frozen masses of people huddled in doorways. Shades of Dickens! Our government has the solution; housing, right? But not for these poor folk. Rather, free mortgages for those with money and jobs. Guess the homeless don’t vote Liberal! Merry Christmas, Mrs. Scrooge. –mallydee

TAKING CARE

I work in smack-central downtown two days a week now, so I see lots of homeless people on the regular, much more than in my Cambie Village home neighbourhood. Lately I’ve been trying to see homeless people more, in a way I never have in my life. The other day, I gave change and crouched down to speak to three of them; just check in and ask them how they’re doing and where they’re sleeping in this cold snap. One of them opened up to me about losing his job in Fort Mac and his daughter being sick. He started crying.

After this, I was walking down Granville, asking how did humanity get so F****D that we don’t do EVERYTHING we can for each other? Imagining, as I have many times before, about inviting a homeless person to spend a night at my place; but, of course, worrying about them maybe stealing from me or my building freaking the fuck out. I then fantasized about demanding a meeting with some provincial minister to tell them how ANGRY I am as a taxpayer that we aren’t doing more. Then I started crying as I walked down Granville Street. I have NEVER cried walking down a busy street, just by thinking of the suffering of others. It is absolutely heartbreaking for all of us, but we stuff our feelings down and ignore them, and walk by without even looking at these people. Don’t applaud me for donating pocket change and talking to homeless people. That’s not why I’m writing this. Don’t let my “ego”

think it’s hot shit for doing what a NORMAL human should do. Just try to DO something to make it better. The guy who started crying told me that just the act of me stopping and talking to him, seeing him, as he put it, warmed his heart. I cried again while writing this tonight. For the love of whatever, let’s try to vote for politicians who don’t entice us with piddly tax cuts and then cut funding or freeze welfare rates for years and years so they fall way behind inflation and the cost of living. Let’s all try to donate monthly to a local organization that focuses on poverty; let’s give some more change; let’s stop and talk to people. Myself included. –Anonymous

TRASH CLASH

I would like to know what’s with all the garbage lying around all over the streets and sidewalks. Is this the result of the fact that it is impossible to find a garbage receptacle anywhere on the streets anymore? Is this

because the city workers complain that we dog owners throw our dog-poop bags in the garbage cans and they don’t like it? So, the city’s answer to that is to remove all garbage receptacles. Has anyone else noticed how dirty our city looks lately? It’s disgusting. –West End Resident

3D DISTRACTION

Saw your rant section in the paper in the lobby at Fifth Ave and was inspired to write in. To the drunk, hipster POS couple at Rogue One last night: Just because you have a couple of beers in you doesn’t mean you can treat the movie theatre like your living room. Why pay $30 to talk through the ENTIRE movie? Literally. The entire movie. Acoustics being what they are, your shrill, shitty voice and your boyfriend’s obnoxious “whispers” had a direct line to my ear holes. It was hard enough to stay in the moment, what with the stupid 3D “experience” forced upon us. So, thank you and happy holidays, assholes. I was tempted to hit you with a snowball as we all walked out. –JS

Reading wrap up: The best local books of 2016 A Series of Dogs By John Armstrong (New Star Books) One of the injustices of human life is that a dog’s lifespan is so short compared to ours. If you’ve ever owned a dog and gone through the love and heartbreak of its life cycle, you’ll know what I mean. Author/musician John Armstrong (AKA Buck Cherry of legendaryVancouver band the Modernettes) seems to know exactly what I mean. This is a funny, very relatable, well-written memoir that tells the touching stories of the many dogs John has had, backdropped by his roughand tumble-life in and around Vancouver. Essential reading for dog lovers!

Here’s my roundup of the top-five best books released by local publishers this year, just in time for your lastminute literary gift shopping. Let us rejoice in the glory of our written word! The Killer Whale Who Changed The World By Mark Leiren-Young (Greystone) Leiren-Young expertly tells the heartbreaking story of Moby Doll (a young, doomed orca captured in 1964) as a means to illustrate our transition from referring to the world’s apex predator not as a “killer whale” but as an orca. This timely, riveting book is a must-read for anyone who cares about these highly intelligent social beings living just below the surface, right out there. What you’ll learn is guaranteed to fill you with a new level of respect for the endangered orca. The Last Gang in Town: The Epic Story of the Vancouver Police vs. the Clark Park Gang By Aaron Chapman (Arsenal Pulp) Vancouver “after dark” author Aaron Chapman (Liquor, Lust, and the Law; Live at the Commodore) has done it again with his third book, which chronicles a bloody era of Vancouver that had previously been cloaked in a Mac jacket of mythology. Chapman does fine journalistic work here: the research is top-shelf, and he manages to never reveal bias to either the police or the gang, even though you sometimes wish he would. W Grant Lawrence is the author of two books: Adventures in Solitude (2010) and The Lonely End of the Rink (2013). His rock ’n’ roll memoir, Dirty Windshields, is slated for spring of 2017.

Bearksin Diary By Carol Daniels (Nightwood Editions) The best novel I read this year was the fictional portrayal of Sandy, a First Nations woman victimized by “the Sixties Scoop.”There’s nothing fictional about the Scoop, however: Between the 1960s and ’80s, over 20,000 Aboriginal Canadian babies were “scooped” at birth from their mothers and placed in foster care by order of the provincial governments of

the day. Out of this shocking chapter of Canadian history comes this very important and gripping book, partially based on author/former journalist Daniels’s life experiences.

Avoid the obvious with your holiday style Aileen Lalor Style File

1. Detox Wash your face, then use a detoxing mask like Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque ($60, at Beautymark and Beautymark. ca). It gets rid of impurities and perks up skin instantly. A facial oil, such as Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil ($103), adds instant glow.

@AileenLalor

Even the most secure-inher-style woman can lose her way when it comes to getting dressed up for the holidays. She knows what to wear for work, weekends and regular nights out, but for some reason, when the company party or New Year’s Eve rolls around, she defaults to an LBD or a similarly safe party frock. This year, we enlisted the help of stylist Nadia Albano to present some fashionforward alternatives.

Left: Pleated velvet skirt, $118 at Anthropologie.com. Centre: GABBY SKYE Bell Sleeve Lace Sheath Dress, $148 at Hudson’s Bay and TheBay.com. Right: Over-the-knee boots in taupe, $150 at Steve Madden. Contributed photos

IF YOU’RE A CASUAL DRESSER…

IF YOU’RE PLUSSIZED…

You probably can’t just wear your hoodie, but you don’t have to play the pretty princess either. Albano suggests going for a menswear vibe. “Style a distressed pair of jeans with a classic white shirt and bow tie,” says Albano. “Throw on a killer pair of strappy heels, clip on a great ear climber, and voila!”

HOW TO HIDE HANGOVER SKIN

IS FORMAL, BUT YOU WANT TO LOOK COOL…

Lace is on-trend this season and there’s plenty of choice on the high street. “Shift dresses are a great way to look chic, and can be styled with a great square pump, flats or ankle booties. Try something in a jewel tone instead of the classic LBD.”

You don’t have to go for a full-on ball gown. Albano’s tip? Velvet. “It’s a great way of infusing luxe and redcarpet glam into your style while still looking cool. Opt for a velvet skirt or palazzzo pants with a silk cami and a leather jacket.

IF THE DRESS CODE

IF YOU’RE PREGNANT…

No one wants to splash out a ton of cash on something they’re only going to wear a couple of times. Instead, see if one of your flowy boho summer tunics is roomy enough to pass as a winter minidress. Albano suggests pairing it with over-the-knee suede boots. “It’s a great way of camouflaging the baby bump while tastefully exposing a little skin.”

IF YOU NEED TO GO FROM DAY TO NIGHT, FAST…

Wear a neutral daytime outfit – black pants and cami – then add a statement coat. “Faux fur will instantly transition a day look to evening. It’s a classic winter texture, and will make the outfit look festive without trying too hard.” W

2. Disguise Your tinted moisturizer or BB cream may not be up to the job of hiding your red/grey complexion. Go for a higher coverage foundation, such as Estée Lauder Double Wear Nude Cushion Stick ($46, at Hudson’s Bay and TheBay. com). It conceals everything, has skin-soothing ingredients, and lasts eight hours. 3. Deflect Draw attention away from your skin with a bright lippie. Red is the obvious choice for Christmas; one that suits most skin tones is Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Red ($35, at Holt Renfrew and HoltRenfrew.com)

Piton Pottery and the renaissance of handmade gifts Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK

With just a few days left until Christmas, the city is, as always, full of people desperately trying to find that oh-so-perfect lastminute gift for a loved one – and I’m among those hustling procrastinators. This year, however, after being involved with Yellow Pages’ Shop the Neighbourhood initiative, the goal of which is to draw attention to the stellar small businesses in Vancouver, I decided to task my family with purchasing our gifts only from local, independent boutiques. Instead of taking advantage of the ease of online shopping or braving the malls, I hit up many of the amazing artisanal markets open during the past few weeks. I spent afternoons seeking out gifts for those on my “nice” list and, at the same time, getting to know the creative minds that made each of them. Although it required a little more work, I feel rewarded by the choices I made, and I

Westender.com

look forward to sharing them – and the stories of where they came from and who made them – with my family come Christmas morning. If you still have a few names not yet crossed off on your shopping list, one local brand I suggest you hit up is Piton Pottery (PitonPottery. com). With each piece made by designer Coral Patola, the collection embraces the nostalgia of old-time ceramics with the modern need for functionality and efficiency. From family members to neighbours to party hostesses, Patola has every gift-giving need covered. I spoke to her about how she got started and what keeps her inspired. Tell our readers a little about yourself. I’m an artist working with clay, and I was born and raised in Kitsilano, where my studio resides. I’m a recent graduate of Emily Carr University, with a major in illustration. I’ve always been the kind of kid who likes to play in the mud, so it’s no wonder why I was attracted to working with clay.

FASHION & HOME Continued from page 5 How did you get started in pottery and what led you to where you are now? I originally started working in ceramic sculpture back in high school and dabbled in it up until university, which is when I fully dove into the medium. Ceramics quickly became my whole life. I still create sculptures, but recently I’ve devoted the majority of my time to making utilitarian ceramics and pottery. I believe there’s a beauty in using a handmade object every day. Favourite accessory? For my home, it’s more a piece of hardware: Right now I’m all about the cup hooks. I screw them in on any and every underside of shelving. I live in a tiny apartment which is only a step up from living in my van, so figuring out ways to save on counter and shelf space is essential for me. I hang all my mugs from hooks – this way, I always get to see them, too, instead of hiding them away in a cupboard. Do you have any predictions for the future of your industry? I believe right now we’re in this huge resurgence of handmade goods, where things are made locally, sourced sustainably, and sold

A piece from Piton Pottery’s old-time-influenced ceramics. Contributed photo in support of our local artists. I think no matter what kind of art you’re producing under this umbrella, it’s always creating more awareness and support for our local arts community. Finish this sentence: My day is not complete without… All-consuming kiln anxiety. This is when you’re firing your kiln and nothing you can do will stop you from worrying about how your works will turn out. Or if the entire kiln is going to explode, with all your hard work being obliterated or melted down to a pool at the bottom. Is there a song or a musician that inspires you to create? Black Sabbath. It seems contradictory to the calming,

almost meditative action of [working] on the potter’s wheel, but this is the music that really gets me moving in the studio. It’s a common occurrence for me to be headbanging and singing along in my studio while I wedge clay. Artistically, what is your favourite part of the city? When you’re driving down a hill going north, and you can see the beach, downtown and the North Shore Mountains all at once. It’s breathtaking, and the geography of this city is really awe-inspiring. A lot of the imagery I use on my ceramics is referencing the beaches or the mountains. I’m truly so inspired by the Pacific Northwest. • For more with Piton Pottery, head toWestender.com W

@FoodgirlFriday Vancouver is a city teeming with exemplary food and drink. In fact, it’s positively overflowing with the proverbial good cheer at its many restaurants and watering holes. Perhaps it’s an instinctive counterstrike against the city’s oft-lamented cold shoulder (we’re not that friendly, apparently), but it seems like chefs and bartenders have been going out of their way to prove that hospitality – especially when offered in tandem with a memorable meal – isn’t a foreign concept here. As you gather with friends and family over the holiday season, here are a few places where Vancouver’s chilly stereotypes are easily forgotten, thanks to the alchemical workings of those behind the stove and the wood.

THE MACKENZIE ROOM

Sean Reeves has taken the classic notion of comfort food and turned it on its sustainably sourced ear. Dishes like roasted whole pig’s head, and bone marrow with beef tongue, might make you think he wishes gout upon his customers, but this chef is equally comfortable preparing stunning vegetarian dishes, like garden veggies with bagna càuda or a constantly rotating feature salad that presents like a five-star meal. And everything is paired beautifully with the innovative cocktails of barman Arthur Wynne, like his recent locavore take on a white Negroni, or even zero-proof creations like a virgin Painkiller with coconut syrup, pineapple, orange, and grated nutmeg.

GRAPES & SODA

JUNIPER KITCHEN & BAR

If you haven’t heard of Sabrine Dhaliwal, you must have been a teetotaller for the past year. The bar manager of Uva is weighted down with accolades and awards for her cutting-edge mixology. The Gin-Gin Donkey, for instance, features house-made sage tea and ginger wine, and the liberal use of Bittered Sling grapefruit-and-hops bitters. It’s a light, refreshing sipper that pairs perfectly with chef Ryan Byrd’s bone-marrow toast with salsa verde, or roasted-mushroom risotto with porcini tea. For something more substantial, head to adjoined neighbour Cibo Trattoria, where you can

At this Cascadian-themed restaurant, chef Sarah Stewart plays around with the idea of Canadian cuisine to create dishes that evoke her farming roots. The menu rotates frequently with the seasons, but items like smoked-pork-shoulder croquettes and smoked duck wings in whisky and honey-sesame sauce are memorable. Ever present are the charcuterie and seafood boards, which include cured meats and seafood that are sourced from local producers or made in-house. As the restaurant’s name might suggest, gin is prominently featured on the drinks menu; bartender Max Borrowman concocts the fantastic list of G&Ts, which range from the simple Juniper (with Aviation

From a truly stellar Old Fashioned to the Unsung Heroes (a heady mix of trebbiolo, Amontillado sherry, cherry brandy, grappa and orange bitters), Yoshemori has a rare talent for cocktails that tell a story. They also pair beautifully with dishes like buratta salad with Brussels sprouts in walnut vinaigrette, and organic beef tartare with anchovy emulsion. GrapesAndSoda.ca W

Swad Indian Kitchen gives back to the community

S

wad Indian Kitchen might be new to town, but its owners have already made an impact in their community by giving out free food to those in need. The West Vancouver restaurant celebrated its one-year anniversary on Saturday, Dec. 17, by handing out parcels of food along Hastings Street on the Downtown Eastside. Swad Indian Kitchen is a multi-cuisine restaurant celebrating the rich flavours of India. The restaurant is also part of the same team behind India Bistro on Davie Street. Owner Kamal Mroke said that the Hastings Street initiative was the perfect way to celebrate their anniversary.

“I wanted to give something back to the community. The weather is so cold and these are homeless people,” he said. “So, I thought I should give them something today. It’s a Saturday and it’s right before Christmas, so they can have a hot meal.”

Swad Indian Kitchen’s menu comes from all over India, while India Bistro’s cuisine is more North Indian style. The free food on Saturday consisted of pilaf, a dish famous in Middle East and South Asian countries, and chena masala, a dish famous in North India.

Mroke said that the two restaurants are considering handing out food in the area on a regular basis.

Thankfully, December is the time when many breweries release their limitededition year-end specialty brews. They are often dark and barrel-aged, with a high alcoholic content – perfect for warming up on cold winter nights. All of these cellar dwellers are happy to mature in the bottle in a dark, dry corner until a special occasion presents itself. Or, just crack them right now, I’m not the boss of you. Here are five of my favourite recent releases to consider if you are looking to splurge and spoil yourself. Because, let’s face it, nobody else will do it for you. Red Collar Black Dog Quad • Belgian-style Quadrupel • 11.69% ABV, 35 IBU • $11.50, 650mL (brewery direct and private liquor stores) This dog has got some bite! At just shy of 12%, Red Collar’s Black Dog Quad is a warm companion on a three-dog night. As the name suggests, it pours inky black, with sweet malty molasses on the nose, reminiscent of barleywine. Decanting is recommended, as it will reveal flavours of raisin and fig, bringing to mind a tawny port. Dageraad Anno 2016 • Belgian-style Strong Ale • 8.5 % ABV • $11.30, 750mL (brewery direct and private liquor stores) I think we can all agree that 2016 has been a goddamn travesty of a year and the sooner it ends the better. However, if there’s a silver lining, it’s that this year has been fantastic for BC beer. Case in point, Dageraad’s Anno 2016. Golden and opaque with spicy fruit flavours right up front thanks to Keremeos pears and Indian coriander, balanced by a refreshing dry finish.

Strange Fellows Reynard • Flemish-style Brown Ale • 6.5% ABV • $18.50, 750mL (brewery direct, and private liquor stores) It’s easy to see why Reynard won gold for Best European Sour Ale at the BC Beer Awards this year. This sour oud bruin pours a deep reddish brown with an earthy nose and characteristic Brett funk. Tart cherries and oak dominate, with the sour acidity providing a dry finish to this surprisingly light-bodied beer. Reynard is aged for a year in French oak barrels, imparting a woody character without overwhelming it with tannins. Steel & Oak En Blanc • Barleywine • 10.0% ABV, 15 IBU • $12.00, 650mL (brewery direct and private liquor stores) Aged for the past year in Chardonnay barrels, En Blanc lacks the astringency of its sibling, En Rouge, which was aged in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Viscous and warming, it pours dark and smells of molasses, with flavours of woody bourbon, vanilla, and dried fruit. Despite this, it finishes cleanly, as its sweetness never overstays its welcome. Central City Sour III – Framboise Sour • Belgianstyle Sour Red Ale • 9.5% ABV, 15 IBU • $23.05, 750mL (brewery direct and private liquor stores) The third in Central City’s phenomenal sour series, the Framboise Sour was aged for two years in Cabernet oak barrels, then French oak, resulting in a wonderfully tart, tannin-rich gem of a beer. Fermented with an infusion of raspberries, this rich and earthy sour is very lightly carbonated, and finishes with mild sweetness and an acidic snap. • All prices include applicable taxes and deposit. Brrrr – it’s chilly out there. Must be toddy time. With the mercury plunging below zero these past few weeks, Vancouver’s bartenders have been brewing up pots and pots of toddies, mulled ciders and other steamy beverages. Open the door to just about any drinking establishment – from the pop-up Winter Terrace at Reflections (in the Rosewood Hotel Georgia) to Juniper Kitchen & Bar in Gastown – and you’ll be greeted by the seasonal aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. And this is especially true at the Cascade Room on Main Street. “As soon as you walk in to the Cascade, all you smell is the mulling spices, because the cauldron is right by the door,” says general manager Justin Taylor. A couple of weeks ago, Taylor added several hot drinks to his cocktail list, including a mulled wine, a whisky toddy, and hot buttered rum. “They’ve been flying [off the bar], people are so cold. I’ve never sold so many hot drinks in my life,” he says, adding that

added baking spices, and so they created the gloriously unctuous drink we know as hot buttered rum. “There are a lot of different ways to do it,” says Taylor. “Mine is simple: butter, brown sugar, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Add hot water and rum to taste, or any spirit, but rum or bourbon is best.” Taylor has made hot buttered rum every year since he began bartending, but this year he’s added a heart-warming twist. The Cascade Company group of restaurants (which also includes Charlie’s Little Italian, El Camino’s, the Union, and Main Street Brewing Company) is selling jars of his spicy-sweet compound butter as a fundraiser for his son’s school, Fawkes Academy, which teaches children with autism-spectrum disorder and developmental disabilities. Each jar of JT’s Hot Buttered Rum Mix sells for $12, of which $10 goes to the school. Taylor is also donating $2 from each hot buttered rum he serves at the Cascade Room. “And we’ve sold 200 hot buttered rums in a week,” he says. “It’s been insane.” It’s just what we’re craving: something that warms both body and soul. his customers consumed 40 litres of mulled wine in less than a week. Although hot beverages haven’t exactly been cool for a while (When was the last time you had a “special coffee” after dinner?), they’ve long been a staple of drinking culture. And this winter, at least, they’ve made a huge comeback. Historically, punches and possets were often heated by plunging a red-hot poker into a jug of spiced spirits, wine or ale mixed with juice, tea or cream. Cultures from ancient Greece to modern Scandinavia mulled wine or cider, adding spices as both a preservative and flavour enhancer. And although the name itself originated in sultry India, for centuries the hot toddy warded off the cold in the UK’s damp, chilly climes. “I almost think of a toddy as a whisky sour that’s hot,” says Taylor. “Traditionally, it’s made with Scotch whisky, but any spirit can be used. Then lemon, honey and hot water. Then you can add spices.” In the 17th century, American colonialists replaced the whisky in their toddies with rum. Then some genius added a pat of butter to the concoction while another

While you may have planned ahead and stocked up on bubbles for the holidays, if you’re like me, it’s possible you’ve already run out.The more sparkling wine I have on hand, the more restocking emergencies I seem to have. (Call it getting into the spirit of the season.) The world of sparkling wines is vast, and not all are created equal. The epitome of celebration is Champagne, which achieves its sparkle thanks to a second fermentation in the very bottle from which you’ll be pouring. Referred to as the “traditional method,” this meticulous process allows for the development of complex flavours and the finest of bubbles. It’s been adopted for high-quality sparklers around the globe, many of which provide an affordable alternative to bona fide Champagne. I’m sticking to “tradition” this year, but balancing my budget by drinking beyond Champagne. Here are five traditionalmethod sparklers under $50 that will keep the bubbles flowing until the new year. Freixenet Elyssia Gran Cuvée, Brut, Cava DO • Spain • $21.29 If racy acidity isn’t your thing, this softer style of sparkler should be up your alley. A specialty cuvée from cava giant Freixenet, it’s fairly rich without being heavy, and offers scents of toast, pear and honey. Slightly nutty on the palate with hints of mocha and, of course, lively bubble, there is an admirable refinement to it. Aguila Crémant de Limoux Brut AOC • France • $23.99 The southern French region of Limoux, which sits in the cool foothills of the

Pyrenees mountains, has a long-established reputation for unique sparkling wine. Here, Chenin Blanc and local Mauzac grape add intrigue to Chardonnay, giving pretty floral and peach notes backed up by lemon and red apple. Light and fresh, with persistent mousse. 2013 Quinta da Murta Brut Nature Bucelas DOC • Portugal • $26.99 This is an exciting new find for me. From Portugal’s tiny Bucelas region (just above Lisbon), it’s crafted from the zesty Arinto grape, and will appeal to those who likes their bubble bracing. A briny sea-air quality meets subtle earthiness and appealing citrusy nuances. Unrelentingly dry and tangy. I can’t wait to crack a bottle with oysters. 2013 Fitzpatrick Family Vineyard Fitz Brut • British Columbia • $32.99 If you want to toast the holidays with some local fizz, check out this new project from the Fitzpatrick family, formerly of CedarCreek. All the grapes come from their Greata Ranch vineyard in Peachland. A Pinot Noir/ Chardonnay blend that’s aged more than two years on the lees, the Fitz is biscuity, creamy, and a fine testament to BC bubble. J-M Sélèque Solessence Brut Champagne AOC • France • $49.99 Sometimes only Champagne will do, and here’s one heck of a good deal. It’s about as inexpensive a bottle of Champagne as you’ll find locally. It’s also friendly and approachable, with plenty of character – just right for happy, light-hearted celebrations. Flavours evoke baked apple tart (complete with toasty pie crust) and a touch of caramel, but it’s still fresh and energetic. • All available at BC Liquor Stores. Prices exclusive of taxes. W

Making memories: Christmas with Reel People Vancouver film & TV stars share their holiday memories and traditions

amazing. And then he passed away a few days later.” In recent years, the framily has found a special way to honour O’Brien’s grandfather at the festive feast. “We always make him a little plate of food, because he loved Christmas, and he loved family,” she says. Favourite Christmasy role: “When I was a kid, me and my friends in the neighborhood would put on a Christmas play in my basement. That was when I started acting, actually.”

Sabrina Furminger Reel People

@Sabrinarmf

Every family is unique, and every family that celebrates Christmas does so with at least one twist that makes it their own. Reel People asked four of Vancouver’s shining film and television stars – John Cassini, Rukiya Bernard, Aliyah O’Brien, and Lisa Durupt – to share the distinctive Christmas traditions and memories that warm their homes and hearts each year.

JOHN CASSINI (BLACKSTONE)

An Italian Christmas in “the Six”: John Cassini’s holiday memories begin with a wide shot of a Toronto street blanketed with snow, and zoom in on a family room filled with Cassini’s relatives engaging in all manner of Christmas Eve merriment. They’d begin convening around 4pm to drink cognacs and whisky and coffee, place heaps of presents under the glittering fake tree – including panettones (Italian Christmas bread), bottles of booze (“Because that’s what Italians give each other”), and wrapped-up cartons of cigarettes – and feast until midnight.

LISA DURUPT (MURDER, SHE BAKED) Left: ‘Insomnia’ actress Aliyah O’Brien. Right: O’Brien with her father in an undated family Christmas photo. Contributed photos Cassini and his brothers would open their gifts that night, with Dec. 25 reserved for sleeping in, playing hockey, and taking in a movie at Imperial 6 Cinemas on Toronto’s iconicYonge Street. “The biggest Christmas Day opening I remember had this huge, huge, huge poster in the middle of the lobby: King Kong,” recalls Cassini. “That one rocked me.” Many of Cassini’s Christmas rituals have changed since he moved to Vancouver and became a dad – his kids open their gifts on Christmas morning, and there aren’t cartons of smokes under the tree – but he still loves a festive film, a fake fir, and kicking back with his loved ones. “For me, Christmas is very much food and movies and coziness and family,” he says. Favourite Christmas songs: Frank Sinatra’s version of “HaveYourself a Merry

TRUST

Little Christmas” and “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby (“White Christmas’ has more value to me now because we never have them.”)

RUKIYA BERNARD (VAN HELSING)

Stonewashed dreams: As any fan of 1983’s cult classic A Christmas Story can tell you, some of the most poignant Christmas memories involve many weeks of yearning for something special – like a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle – to materialize under the tree. For Rukiya Bernard, that “something special” – when she was six years old and growing up in 1980sToronto – was a pair of stonewashed jeans. “Stonewashed jeans were the ish,” chuckles Bernard. “I wanted them badly” – so badly, in fact, that on that particular Christmas morning,

she awoke before her entire family, crept to the tree, and broke one of the household’s cardinal Christmas rules: Thou shalt not open presents until everyone is awake. “I saw the box that I thought might be the box of clothes, and I was just ‘To hell with it,’ which is against character for me, because I’m a goody-two-shoes,” says Bernard. She opened the box – carefully, so that she could re-tape it with no one the wiser – and, in a cinematic moment that would delight any Christmas Story fan, gleefully beheld the highly coveted stonewashed jeans. Bernard recalls hightailing it to the bathroom to try on her new jeans before she had to pack them back up. By the time she returned to the tree, her parents were awake, and she was busted. “But it was worth it, because I was so, so happy,” says Bernard. Favourite Christmas foods: “I grew up in a very mixed West Indian and East African family. On Christmas, we would eat the typical turkey and ham dishes, but then there’d be Jamaican escovitch fish, which is a king fish made with a lot of vinegar and scotch bonnet and onions. It’s amazing. My mother would cook traditional Kenyan food, too; collard greens, potato mixed with peas and corn, and roasted goat. She’d cook for a whole week.”

ALIYAH O’BRIEN (INSOMNIA)

All in the Framily: For Aliyah O’Brien, Christmas has always been about her “framily”: the family she was born into, and her neighbours from when she was growing up onVancouver Island who decades ago combined to become one big happy family of friends. O’Brien’s framily celebrates Christmas with a turkey dinner, carolling, and zero presents. “We did away with presents years ago,” says O’Brien. “We just wanted it to be about getting together and connecting. It’s a big love-fest.” O’Brien traces this emphasis on family, friends, feasts, and fun back to her late grandfather. “He was instrumental in getting us all connected and he created our family traditions,” she says. Her grandfather figures prominently in one of her most treasured holiday memories: Christmas Day 2013, when O’Brien (aided by boyfriend Aleks Paunovic of The 100 and Van Helsing) snuck her ailing grandfather out of the hospital so that he could partake in the feast. “He wasn’t supposed to leave the hospital, but we wheeled him into the back of the house and he ate the most amazing dinner with us, and he laughed so much, and then we snuck him back into the hospital and they were like, ‘we knew you broke him out,’ but he had the best Christmas ever. It was wonderful. It was

As seen onTV: For many Vancouverites, the Christmas season begins Dec. 1, when we break out our advent calendars and ugly sweaters. For Lisa Durupt, the Christmas season often begins in the summer. Over the last several years, Durupt has appeared in a string of holiday movies produced by and for the Hallmark Channel – which, in order to hitTV screens in time for Christmas, must be filmed months in advance, often in un-Christmasy conditions. “One we filmed in May, in Squamish, in the middle of a heat wave,’” says Durupt, who has two festive films on Hallmark this season: Operation Christmas and A Dream of Christmas. “You’re bundled up, and you’re just sweating, and all the director can say to you is, ‘Play the cold.’You’re trying to pretend that you’re so cold, but really you’re trying not to melt in your own skin.” Growing up inWinnipeg, Durupt’s Christmases were about sleeping late, cartoons, and hockey; these days, they involve taking her grandparents to church on Christmas Eve, making sure she has enough Baileys to pour into her coffee tumbler for when she walks her dog on Christmas morning, and watching theWorld Junior Hockey Championships on Boxing Day. Favourite Christmas song: “I love Boney M’s version of ‘Feliz Navidad.’ No one really knows the words, but everyone tries to sing it every Christmas.” W

Editor’s Note: As the calendar year winds to a close, may you find time over the holidays to watch all the movies you meant to get to month after month. Here, our intrepid film reviewer’s top picks for 2016. We recommend you start with these.

5. ARRIVAL

The strongest sci-fi film of the year was also one the best movies of 2016, period. French Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario) and screenwriter Eric Heisserer delivered a thoughtful and mature approach to the ageold “first contact” story. The world is sent into a frenzy after a dozen extraterrestrial spaceships descend on the planet with no clear intention. A linguistics expert (Amy Adams) and physicist (Jeremy Renner) are dispatched to try and establish communication with the otherworldly beings. At its core, Arrival is a relatively small movie that tackles enormous ideas, namely the nature of grief. It’s a brilliant narrative twist that delicately and elegantly

4. KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS

American stop-motion animation studio Laika’s (Coraline, Paranorman) fourth film is also their crowning achievement. Kubo and the Two Strings is an ancient Japanese folk tale mixed with epic adventure about a young boy (voiced brilliantly by Game of Thrones’ Art Parkinson) who joins forces

with a wise Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle warrior (Matthew McConaughey) to battle the deceptive Moon King and a pair of evil twins known as The Sisters. The movie is utterly exquisite and not only a testament to tireless, painstaking technical craftsmanship, but is rich with introspective themes about familial bonds, fate and mortality. Kubo isn’t afraid to tackle tough topics, doesn’t pander, and casts a lingering spell on the viewer.

The life of an American gay black man is chronicled in three distinct stages of his tumultuous world in the incredible coming-of-age tale Moonlight. Utilizing three different actors (Alex R. Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes) to great effect, director Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy) eschews the standard formulaic approach to storytelling in a beautifully understated way to convey the trials and tribulations of a young man grappling with his own sexuality. Moonlight’s bold aesthetic makes for a breathtaking visual tapestry and its abrupt conclusion only enhance the film, as if underscoring the uncertainty of life itself.

2. MANCHESTER BY THE SEA

Writer-director Kenneth Lonergan’s (Margaret,You Can Count On Me) stunning examination of guilt and forgiveness in Manchester by the Sea was easily the year’s finest drama. Following the death of his older brother, Lee (Casey Affleck, giving the best performance of his career) is called to his

former seaside home to act as guardian of his impertinent teen nephew (a sensational Lucas Hedges). What ensues is a heartbreaking and sometimes even hilarious look at the complicated dynamics of a family dealing with the past and wrestling with how to move forward. The performances are achingly genuine and the razor-sharp script gives the film an indelible stamp of a quiet masterpiece.

1. LA LA LAND

There was nothing more life-affirming at the theatres this year than Whiplash writer/ director Damien Chazelle’s gorgeous, vibrant, and infectious modern musical La La Land. A struggling jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) and aspiring actress (Emma Stone) strike up a romance and navigate the tricky waters of finding fame and success in modern LA. Full to the brim with rapturous singing, dazzling choreography, numerous nods to the bygone era of cinema, and an ending that is thought-provoking without being saccharine, La La Land solidifies Chazelle as a brilliant, dynamic filmmaker and reminds us that movies can still be a truly transcendent and magical experience. ‘Rogue One’

Gritty thrills abound in ‘Rogue One’ ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna

StarWars fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief, because director Gareth Edwards and the digital sorcerers at Vancouver’s Industrial Light & Magic studio have created a thrill ride in Rogue One:A Star Wars Story. The movie’s distinct mark – perhaps a test of its longevity – is the decidedly dark, edgy tone. This is a far cry from the family-oriented George Lucas prequels. Rogue One is fine for kids, but it also takes a refreshingly mature approach to storytelling. Set just before the event of 1977’s A New Hope (the one that started it all), a defiant band of Rebels takes matters into its own hands and hatches a daring plot to steal plans for the Death Star, the Empire’s dreaded superweapon. A diverse cast including Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, DonnieYen, Forest Whitaker, and Riz Ahmed provide intriguing characters that could have benefitted from a little more development. The story plays out like a war drama mixed with big scale sci-fi heist and, for the most part, is riveting. Several issues do hurt the flick in sections. An over-reliance on fan service grows tedious, Michael Giacchino’s score, while rousing, lacks the John Williams’ magic, and the script contains plenty of the usual clunky and occasionally exhaustive exposition. However, quibbles aside, Rogue One is a gripping throwback that should satisfy most audiences. –Thor Diakow

REAL ESTATE TransLink confirms $440 million sale of Oakridge bus barn Proceeds to be pumped into other transportation projects GLEN KORSTROM @glenkorstrom

TransLink has sold its 13.8acre transit centre on West 41st Avenue to a consortium that includes Vancouver developer Intergulf and Beijing-based Modern Green Development Co. Ltd., which operates as Modern Investment Group, for $440 million. Business inVancouver reported this sale in October but TransLink would not confirm details at the time. This sale ranks as one of the largest real estate transactions in BC’s history. TransLink marketed the property publicly to generate interest in the sale and it received 14 bids, all of which underwent rigorous evaluation, according to the transit operator.

TransLink’s 13.8-acre bus barn on West 41st Avenue is outlined in red. Cushman & Wakefield photo Ultimately,TransLink deemed that IntergulfModern Green Development Corp. would provide the best value for TransLink and taxpayers. “This transaction is a

tremendous benefit to taxpayers, and is an example of how TransLink is using its resources to better serve customers across the region,” said Don Rose, who is the chair of TransLink’s

board of directors. BIV reported Dec. 16 that TransLink had placed a $93 million order with Bombardier to provide 28 new SkyTrain cars that will start to arrive in 2018 and be in

service by early 2019. That was the first investment in the $2 billion Phase 1 of TransLink’s 10-year vision to improve transit service. TransLink anticipated pumping $150 million from proceeds of the Oakridge transit centre sale toward that $2 billion plan. The remaining proceeds from its sale of the Oakridge transit centre will be reinvested back into property that TransLink needs to support projects identified in the vision, TransLink said. Some projects expected to be part of Phase 1 of the 10-year vision include ongoing pre-construction work for the Broadway Millennium Line extension and the Surrey-Newton-Guildford light-rail projects. “The proceeds from this property sale will provide additional regional funding for the Broadway and Surrey rapid-transit projects,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. –Story courtesy of Business in Vancouver

Average rent for one-bedroom apartment dips in Vancouver: PadMapper EMMA CRAWFORD HAMPEL @emmahampelbiv

The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Vancouver dipped slightly in December, but the city still has Canada’s highest rent for that home type. On average,Vancouverites are paying $1,820 for an apartment with one bedroom, which is down 1.1 per cent compared with November. The reason for the drop isn’t entirely clear. “It is unclear whether the falling one bedroom prices are due to the recently passed legislation or merely seasonality that we frequently see in the rental market as we get into the winter months,” PadMapper’s Greg Vanderhorst said. Prices were up for two-bedroom apartments, however. Between November and December, the average rent for that home type increased 3.7 per cent to $3,030. Toronto had the country’s second-highest average rent for a one-bedroom apartment. Rent for that home type increased 4.9 per cent, reaching $1,500.Two-bedroom units increased 4.4 per cent to $1,900.Victoria came in third place, as the average one-bedroom rent increased 4.3 per cent to $1,220 and two-bedroom units increased 4.1 per cent to $1,520. –Story courtesy of Business in Vancouver

Vancouver home affordability hits record low, but may be at a turning point: RBC The city is still the least affordable metropolitan area in the country EMMA CRAWFORD HAMPEL @emmahampelbiv

Vancouver’s housing market remains the most unaffordable market in Canada by far, and in 2016’s third quarter, affordability eroded further, according to RBC’s Housing Trends and Affordability report released Dec. 21. On average, in 2016’s

third quarter, Vancouverites needed to spend 92 per cent of their median pre-tax household income to service the costs of mortgage payments, property taxes and utilities, based on the average market cost for all housing types. This is a record high for the city. This is up 2.2 percentage points compared with Q2, which happens to be the smallest increase in more than two years, and according to RBC chief economist Craig Wright, this could actually be a good sign for affordability in the city.

Shutterstock “The third quarter could be a turning point toward improving affordability in the Vancouver area in light of a recent easing in detached-home prices,” Wright said. “New mortgage insurance rules may

MAUREEN YOUNG

help affordability over time, but 2017 is likely to see a tug of war between these market-cooling policy measures and rising longerterm interest rates, pulling affordability in opposite directions. “The net effect of this on the costs of owning a home is unclear at this point.” Much of the affordability erosion in the city came from detached homes, which are “by now clearly a luxury form of housing in Vancouver,” RBC said in its report. Housing in the city remains significantly less

affordable than anywhere else in Canada. The average household in the country only needs to spend 44.3 per cent of median pre-tax income on servicing homeownership, which is less than half of Vancouverites’ share. After Vancouver, in a distant second place, is Toronto, at 63.7 per cent. As well, for the first time in two years, Vancouver did not have Canada’s biggest drop in affordability; that honour went to Toronto, which saw affordability drop three percentage points. –Story courtesy of Business in Vancouver

SEX

Christmas with the Ways: Gin, weed, barf and more! @MyszkaWay I know I’m breaking the rules right now by writing about Christmas traditions instead of sex, love and relationships, but I’m a big believer in family. My parents had sex, and fell in love, and raised my siblings and me – so there we go. Everything is love and relationships! I know everyone has their own holiday traditions, but I want to share the Way family’s secrets with you, in case your Christmas is getting a little… boring. Do you like your holidays drunk and loud? Welcome to a Way Family Christmas.

GIN AND GIN

My father loves drinking gin because his father loved drinking gin, and now we Way daughters love drinking gin, too. That big, blue bottle of Bombay Sapphire just feels like home. And not only did my grandfather love a good glass (or seven) of gin; he was an avid gin player. So, during cocktail hour (which usually begins around 3pm), we all sit around the kitchen island playing gin rummy. Since it’s a two-player game, we’ll set up a tournament that continues night after night throughout the holidays. It’s a good way to get a friendly family competition going. Nothing like screaming and swearing about your losses before dinner has even been prepped.

‘SHIT-MAN’

When my husband joined the Way circus, he brought with him a card game called Shit-Man. Mixing Big Two, Crazy Eights, and a lot of shit talk, this is the ultimate after-dinner treat. It’s a fast-paced game that involves being sent to Shit Island: dealing the cards for the players when you lose a hand and remaining there until the next loser takes your place. My husband dubbed us Ways “WD-40” because, as he says, we’re all greasy cheaters when it comes to Shit-Man. My sisters and I are pretty good at cheating: We’ll hide our bad cards under our chairs or toss them into the discard pile when my husband and father, Rick, get distracted deciding on another bottle of scotch. Shit-Man is a great way to get even the most uptight members of your family to have some fun. Every game usually ends with my father referring to everyone who beats him as “You bitch.”

Westender.com

‘THE FAMILY STONE’

My middle sister, Samantha, is a big fan of all Christmas traditions, but her favourite is forcing us to watch cheesy Christmas movies – usually more than once. Christmas with the Kranks comes a close second to The Family Stone, a holiday dramedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Luke Wilson. The movie is totally twisted and ends up with the two brothers trading love interests. It’s weird, corny and heartwarming – the perfect Christmas film.

‘DAD WEED’ ON CHRISTMAS EVE

In the Way house, we like to really rage it up on Christmas Eve and designate Christmas Day for eating, drinking (modestly) and being merry. Christmas Eve is when the weed usually emerges. If my baby sister doesn’t have any to spare, we’ll pull out the crunchy bud my dad keeps stored in a tin in the garage. My mother isn’t the biggest fan of this tradition, because when my father gets so stoned he can’t stop laughing about his hands, she’s the one who has to drag his howling ass to bed. Sorry, Mom, but you know it’s worth the comedy.

A BIG BREAKFAST (AND MAYBE A BARF)

My father always insists on making us a huge, delicious breakfast, complete with deluxe scrambled eggs (à la Martha Stewart), chewy Jewish breads, fresh fruit and tons of traditional Polish sausage. It’s awesome, and I’m saying this as someone who doesn’t like breakfast food. I don’t know if it’s the hangover from the night before or my aversion to eggs, but Christmas morning normally includes a sneaky barf before the festivities continue.

CLEANING, CLEANING… THEN ENJOY!

It wouldn’t be a Way family Christmas without a little Swiffer action and some deep cleaning. My parents are borderline certifiable when it comes to cleanliness. I hated it at the time, but now I’m exactly the same relentless pillow-fluffer as my mother and have come to terms with my mental disorder. As much as food, drink and good times are a part of the Way traditions, keeping a clean and organized home is, too. When we open our gifts, there are two designated bags: one for Christmas bags and wrappings that can be recycled next year, and the other for trash. Someone is always assigned “discarded

wrappings duty” (usually my mother). You don’t join our family without learning where the upstairs recycling basket is located, or the steps for a clean sink, or which scrubber is strictly reserved for the wine glasses with the thin rims. My husband has adjusted well. It’s not as fun as the gin, cards and pot, but it’s part of the deal.

Warm up your winter Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny with spices Patty Javier Gomez Whole Nourishment

@WholeNourishBC

People who moved here for the region’s milder weather – not to mention lifelong locals who are used to living in this temperate paradise – have surely been disappointed these past couple of weeks.Yet while we slip and slide in rain boots not designed for snow and ice, we should remember it could be so much worse: I remember living in Ontario and crying because I was so cold while waiting for the bus,

and my tears actually froze on my face. Winter may yet have more cruel surprises in store, so what can we do to bring a little warmth back into our lives? For starters, eat some naturally warming foods, and make good use of the dozens of spices available. Spices have so many different uses, and can provide much more than flavour. For example, did you know oregano is great for digestive health? Or that cinnamon is an antiseptic and coriander is antiinflammatory? Here are some spices you can add to foods, hot drinks, and more.

Rolfing is Manual Therapy which strengthens the body’s structural integrity and functional resources. Rolfing can help you move again.

Not exclusive to Indian cooking, cardamom can do wonders for your gastrointestinal system and cholesterol levels, and has even been known to work as an antidepressant. And on top of all that, it will help keep you warm all night long.

CINNAMON:

I think a lot of us have the misconception that cinnamon is strictly a dessert spice. On the contrary, I’ve added a dash or two of this amazing, flavourful bark to soups, stews and many other savoury dishes. It also offers anti-inflammatory properties and can help balance your blood sugar. This precious spice not only turns everything yellow; it offers an array of medicinal properties, from acting as anti-inflammatory to lowering cholesterol. You likely know this powerful powder needs to be measured out cautiously, especially if you’re sensitive to spicy things. A little bit can add just the right kick to your favorite foods – even your morning eggs.

GINGER:

There are so many ways you can incorporate ginger into everyday meals. Add it to soups, smoothies and stir-fries, or go old-school with ginger tea, which does wonders for your digestion and even your liver. W

NPR’s Scott Simon interviewed jazz pianist and songwriter Robert Glasper, who has created nine albums, won a Grammy, and collaborated with a range of great musicians. Simon asked him if he had any frustrations – “grand ambitions” that people discouraged him from pursuing. Glasper said yes. He’d really like to compose and sing hip-hop rhymes. But his bandmates just won’t go along with him when he tries that stuff. I hope that Glasper, who’s an Aries, will read this horoscope and take heart from what I’m about to predict: In 2017, you may finally get a “Yes!” from people who have previously said “No!” to your grand ambitions.

Humans have drunk hot tea for over two millennia. Chinese emperors were enjoying it as far back as the second century B.C. And yet it wasn’t until the 20th century that anyone dreamed up the idea of enclosing tea leaves in convenient oneserving bags to be efficiently brewed. I foresee you either generating or stumbling upon comparable breakthroughs in 2017, Taurus. Long-running traditions or customs will undergo simple but dramatic transformations that streamline your life.

For a bald eagle in flight, feathers are crucial in maintaining balance. If it inadvertently loses a feather on one wing, it will purposely shed a comparable feather on the other wing. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, this strategy has metaphorical meaning for your life in 2017. Do you want to soar with maximum grace and power? Would you like to ascend and dive, explore and scout, with ease and exuberance? Learn from the eagle’s instinctual wisdom.

In August 2012, a group of tourists visited the Eldgja volcanic region in Iceland. After a while, they noticed that a fellow traveller was missing. Guides organized a search party, which worked well into the night trying to track down the lost woman. At 3am, one of the searchers suddenly realized that she herself was the missing person everyone was looking for. The misunderstanding had occurred many hours earlier because she had slipped away to change her clothes and no one recognized her in her new garb. This is a good teaching story for you to meditate on in 2017, Scorpio. I’d love to see you change so much that you’re almost unrecognizable. And I’d love to see you help people go searching for the new you.

“What you do is what counts and not what you had the intention of doing,” said Pablo Picasso. If I had to choose a single piece of advice to serve as your steady flame in 2017, it might be that quote. If you agree, I invite you to conduct this experiment: On the first day of each month, take a piece of paper and write down three key promises you’re making to yourself. Add a brief analysis of how well you have lived up to those promises in the previous four weeks. Then describe in strong language how you plan to better fulfill those promises in the coming four weeks.

In 2017, you will be at the peak of your ability to forge new alliances and deepen existing alliances. You’ll have a sixth sense for cultivating professional connections that can serve your noble ambitions for years to come. I encourage you to be alert for new possibilities that might be both useful for your career and invigorating for your social life. The words “work” and “fun” will belong together! To achieve the best results, formulate a clear vision of the community and support system you want.

During the campaign for US President in 1896, Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan traveled 18,000 miles as he made speeches all over the country. But the Republican candidate, William McKinley, never left his hometown of Canton, Ohio. He urged people to visit him if they wanted to hear what he had to say. The strategy worked. The speeches he delivered from the front porch of his house drew 750,000 attendees and played an important role in his election. I recommend a comparable approach for you in the coming months, Cancerian. Invoke all your attractive power as you invite interested parties to come see you and deal with you on your home turf.

Capricorn writer Edgar Allan Poe has been an important cultural influence. His work appears on many must-read lists of 19th-century American literature. But during the time he was alive, his bestselling book was not his famous poem “The Raven,” nor his short story “The Gold-Bug,” nor his novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Rather, it was The Conchologist’s First Book, a textbook about mollusk shells, which he didn’t actually write, but merely translated and edited. If I’m reading the astrological omens correctly, 2017 will bring events to help ensure that your fate is different from Poe’s. I see the coming months as a time when your best talents will be seen and appreciated better than ever before.

“Poetry is a way of knowledge, but most poetry tells us what we already know,” writes poet Charles Simic. I would say the same thing about a lot of art, theater, film, music, and fiction: Too often it presents well-crafted repetitions of ideas we’ve heard before. In my astrological opinion, Leo, 2017 will be a time when you’ll need to rebel against that limitation. You will thrive by searching for sources that provide you with novel information and unique understandings. Simic says: “The poem I want to write is impossible: a stone that floats.” I say: Be on the lookout for stones that float.

“My goal is to create a life that I don’t need a vacation from,” says motivational author Rob Hill Sr. That’s an implausible dream for most people. But in 2017, it will be less implausible than it has ever been for you Aquarians. I don’t guarantee that it will happen. But there is a decent chance you’ll build a robust foundation for it, and thereby give yourself a head start that enables you to accomplish it by 2019. Here’s a tip on how to arouse and cultivate your motivation: Set an intention to drum up and seek out benevolent “shocks” that expand your concepts of who you are and what your life is about.

The Economist magazine reports that if someone wanted to transport $10 million in bills, he or she would have to use eight briefcases. Sadly, after evaluating your astrological omens for 2017, I’ve determined that you won’t ever have a need for that many. If you find yourself in a situation where you must carry bundles of money from one place to another, one suitcase will always be sufficient. But I also want to note that a sizable stash of cash can fit into a single suitcase. And it’s not out of the question that such a scenario could transpire for you in the coming months. In fact, I foresee a better chance for you to get richer quicker than I’ve seen in years.

The birds known as winter wrens live in the Puget Sound area of Washington. They weigh barely half an ounce, and their plain brown coloring makes their appearance unremarkable. Yet they are the avian equivalents of the opera star Pavarotti. If they weighed as much as roosters, their call would be ten times as strong as the rooster’s “Cock-a-doodle-doo”. Their melodies are rich and complex; one song may have more than 300 notes. When in peak form, the birds can unleash cascades at the rate of 36 notes per second. I propose that we make the winter wren your spirit animal in 2017, Pisces. To a casual observer, you may not look like you can generate so much virtuosity and lyrical power. But according to my analysis, you can.
