WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Shame on King George Secondary School for being the ONLY establishment on the entire length of Denman Street that did not clear their

sidewalks during the recent snowfalls. I slipped and fell on the frozen icy sidewalk at the front of the school and am grateful to other walkers who assisted me. And what a missed opportunity for the school: give snow removal shovels to some of their teen students and at the same time let them learn a valuable lesson on public safety and participation. Also many thanks to all of the nearby

apartment buildings who did clear their sidewalks, thus allowing many seniors easier access to the stores and services on Denman. Much appreciated!! –Anonymous

SNOW ANGELS

A huge rave for the building manager at the Times Square Suites who has been ensuring that the slush on the road from the approaches at Robson and Denman to the ramps on his corner have been kept clear. That makes it so much easier for people with walkers/ scooters/wheelchairs/strollers to get through. It was such a welcome sight after fighting with many of the other ramps with my little handicap scooter. Another rave for the wonderful lady who helped push my scooter through many feet of the sloppy mess from the end of Chilco to Comox, and the couple of feet of slush at the bottom of the ramp to the road. The gentleman who gave me a push trying to get over the mess on Cardero is another who deserves a rave, as do the many who asked if I needed help even when I was ok. –Nancy Bourne

A temporary change in ferry service has made it easier to visit BC’s picturesque seaside towns. Grant Lawrence photo

The time is now to visit the Sunshine Coast Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

If you’ve ever wanted to visit the pretty coastal villages of Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Sechelt, Powell River and Lund – which begin in that order, just a short ferry ride away from Horseshoe Bay – I have a hot winter travel tip for you: Do it now, because it’s never been easier. And if you, like me, have raced like Burt Reynolds in Cannonball Run along the Trans-Canada Highway, desperate to make your sailing, only to spend countless hours in parking purgatory after missing your boat – rejoice! That horrible #ferrystress is (temporarily) a thing of the past. From now until early April, ferries are leaving hourly from both Horseshoe Bay and Langdale, and traffic is pleasantly light. The reason for the increased sailings is due to construction to an onramp at the Langdale terminal. The boats in service can’t handle as many cars, but fewer people are travelling at this time of year anyway, which makes it the perfect time to visit this beautiful and very nearby part of our province. The hordes arrive by Easter or the May long weekend. Before that, you’ll be able to find off-season deals at several of the hotels, Airbnbs and bed-and-breakfasts that have remained open in the winter. And if you go, you owe it to yourself to experience the full glory of the Sunshine Coast by venturing to the northern leg, crossing the spectacular Jervis Inlet via BC Ferry to Saltery Bay. (Check that schedule closely; there are some major midday gaps in it.) From there, explore the cultural awakening occurring in Powell River. Thanks to the Greater Vancouver Exodus, this is one of the towns benefiting from young families and retirees taking advan-

tage of cheap real estate. The recent influx has seen a renaissance of sorts on the once-depressed “downtown” strip of Marine Drive, which is now lined with delicious and hip eateries. Check out the upscale Coastal Cookery (which features an absolutely world-class view of the Strait of Georgia), the zesty and authentic Costa Del Sol Latin Cuisine, and Base Camp, a popular coffeehouse with great sandwiches and salads. Five minutes up Highway 101 is Powell River’s historic Townsite, where you can stay at the comfy Courthouse Inn, catch a movie at the stunning Patricia Theatre (the longest-running movie theatre in Canada) and get tipsy at the award-winning Townsite Brewing. And then you can sober up right across the street at 32 Lakes Coffee Roasters (named for the number of lakes in the Powell River area). If you’ve made it all the way to Powell River, you owe it to yourself to wind your way a further 30 minutes to tiny Lund – the end of the road, where the major attraction is the worldfamous cinnamon buns found at Nancy’s Bakery. More incredible views of the mountains of Desolation Sound can be found at the excellent Laughing Oyster Restaurant, over the hill in Okeover. (Call ahead to make sure they’re open; they tend to head south in the winter months.) If you make the trip, chances are you’ll have most of the coast to yourself at this time of year. But be warned: once that ferry ramp is fixed, everything will return to the formal shitty schedule, with boats leaving every two hours if you’re lucky. Word has it residents of the Sunshine Coast have threatened to sabotage the repairs just to keep the sweet hourly schedule. I suggest you take advantage of it while you can. This is a 100-per-cent nonsponsored article. W

Five Finds for your Valentine Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK

With the year’s most romantic day just around the corner, love is in the air, and retailers are in full swing with the best swag for your sweetie. If you’re looking to get a little something for the décorlover in your life, here are my top five picks for setting the romantic vibe at home.

1. ‘FOLLOW YOUR HEART’ PILLOW

Any designer can attest that there’s no such thing as too many throw pillows, and what better way to snuggle up to a message of love than with this awesome linen number. Subtle in both size and messaging, the 100-percent linen pillow has a simple stitched message of “Follow Your Heart.” ($75 at the Cross Decor & Design, 1198 Homer)

2. HEART MYLAR

Whether a gift or for myself, artwork is my favourite part of décor. Specifically, local art – I love the beauty of supporting and growing the incredible art scene in Vancouver. One of the most soughtafter local artists in recent years, Zoë Pawlak has now relocated to Montreal and opened a new studio. With an ever-growing following, her pieces remain in constant demand here at home, too, and everyone (including design darling Jillian Harris) seems to swoon for the Heart Mylar. (See how she styled her piece at Westender.com.) Playing with a literal representation of the heart, the mixed-media pieces offer Pawlak’s signature softness with the edge of metallic detailing. Custom orders available. ($600 from ZoePawlak.com)

3. HAY COLOUR VASES

If you decide to give the quintessential Valentine’s gift

every girl loves to receive – beautiful fresh flowers – you can score a few extra brownie points by opting to include a stunning vase. Danish deisgn house Hay offers a family of coloured vases, in various shapes and sizes that suit all possible bouquet needs and bring a modern twist to the traditional glass vessel. The subtle surface details add that extra little wow factor without overwhelming the main event. ($260 at Vancouver Special, 3612 Main)

4. MINI HEARTS TEA TOWELS

For a super-functional gift that still says “I love you,” my current fave is this sweet little heart-patterned tea towel. Made of 100-per-cent cotton, it’s easy to wash and it wears beautifully. The best part is that your declaration of affection is refreshed every time your sweetheart gets down to work in the kitchen – definitely a gift that keeps

on giving! ($22 from Nineteen Ten Home, 4366 Main)

5. HAWKINS NY LOUISE BRASS BOWLS

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Well, if you’re going to brave preparing a romantic meal at home this Valentine’s, you should consider the importance of presentation. If your current tableware is anything like mine (making plain their handme-down status), then the Hawkins NY Louise collection has got you covered. Super simple yet ultra chic, the brass-plated exteriors offer a high-glam romance vibe, perfectly downplayed by a white enamel interior. Ranging from small side bowls to large serving bowls, you can choose to dress the whole table, or select just a few statement pieces to give the perfect backdrop to your culinary efforts. Hot tips for cool brides Aileen Lalor Style File

@AileenLalor

So the question has been popped, the champagne has been poured and now it’s time for the nitty-gritty: Planning the wedding. One of the first steps is choosing the dress. Bridal fashion doesn’t change as quickly as the high street does – you won’t see everyone in long frocks one season and minis the next. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t evolve at all; you only need a quick glance at your mom’s wedding photos to see that. We talked to local industry experts to find out what summer 2017 brides will be wearing, plus top trends for hair, makeup and accessories. Best to get a move on with picking the dress: They can take up to eight months to come in after ordering.

I LIKE TO MOVE IT MOVE IT

No more stiff and restrictive dresses: Those in the know say that frocks that allow movement are de rigueur

this year. “Brides seem to be straying away from the structured mermaid gowns and ordering more softly fitted gowns which will move freely throughout the day,” says Brittany Vickers, operations manager of Blush Bridal (Blushbridal.ca).

DETAIL ORIENTED

Clean and simple gowns are on their way out in favour of texture. Samantha Hallaran, owner of Rituals of Love (RitualsOfLoveBridal.com) says her brides are going for details like 3D lace appliqué and silk petals, while Vickers’ are drawn to soft lace.

CALL TO ARMS

Sleeveless frocks were in style for decades. Maybe it’s the Kate Middleton effect, or maybe we all got tired of seeing brides who looked naked in their headshots, but their popularity finally seems to be waning. That said, if the dress you love is strapless, don’t let fashion diktats put you off. “‘You do you’ is in!” says Hallaran. “Brides are finally starting to go for something unique.Your gown can be timeless and ‘bridal’ without being typical. I love

showing up at a wedding and seeing the bride wear something show-stopping and true to her personality. Weddings are a celebration, let us not forget.”

HEAD OVER HEELS

“In this day and age we only have a few chances to wear ceremonial pieces like headpieces and veils – it draws the whole look together,” says Hallaran. What’s in? For veils, Vickers says that ultra long and dramatic types, adorned with crystals or lace, are on trend. When it comes to headgear, it’s all about chains and circlets. “Like necklaces for the head, they draw the eyes up and help create an evenly balanced look,” says jewelry designer Elsa Corsi (Jeweliette.com and Elsacorsi. com). And TV viewing is affecting bridal fashion, too. “We will start to see fewer flower crowns and a return to something more formal. Thanks to shows like The Crown on Netflix, we’ll also see the tiara make a comeback,” says Corsi.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDES

By and large, brides have

Left: Bo and Luca Isra, available at Rituals of Love. Whitney Krutzfeldt Photography. Right: Rosa Clara Niher, available at Blush Salon. Contributed photo always gone for soft and neutral makeup looks and that’s not really changing, though some brides do look to the trends. “We feel it is our job to bring a modern quality to bridal makeup,” says AJ Woodworth, owner of The Glamoury (TheGlamoury. com). “Right now, highlighted dewy skin is often requested over a heavier matte base. We do get the occasional bride that wants more of a dramatic look such as bold lip,” she says. For hairstyles, the traditional updo is losing its popularity. “A lot of brides are going with a

classic loose wave instead,” says Woodworth. “The dress usually sets the tone for how the hair should be styled. For example, if the lower back is exposed we often recommend our messy upstyle. But ultimately, it is about making the bride feel like the best version of herself, and there are no rules for that.”

AFTER DARK

Your daytime lingerie choices will probably be dictated by the dress, and may be more practical than pretty – a nude bra and panties. But when it’s time for the

boudoir, it’s all about lace, silk and colour. “Although we typically offer our bridal collection in ivory, pale pink and blues, brides don’t necessarily abide by this palette,” says Kimberly Fairs, customer service manager of Christine Lingerie (ChristineLingerie.com). “Some brides will choose to get coordinating robes for their bridal parties so everyone matches in the ‘getting ready’ photos.” Style-wise, Fairs says most brides are going for short nighties (chemises), and the romper is coming back in a big way. DINING OUT

Beyond the Benny: brunch that offers something extra Anya Levykh Nosh

@FoodgirlFriday Vancouverites are serious about brunch. What else can explain our collective willingness to line up in any kind of weather and wait an hour or more in order to devour poached or scrambled eggs with a mimosa? That said, the palate occasionally longs for something other than a smoked-salmon benny – something other than any kind of eggs, in fact. For those times, here are a few places, in no particular order, that have stepped up their brunch game with less common – but no less delicious – fare.

CAFÉ MEDINA

The waits are long, yes, but where else in the city can you breakfast on spicy Moroccan meatballs washed down with a cocktail or three from talented barkeep Yacine Sylla? While this popular breakfast and brunch spot is known for dishes like tagine of merguez sausage with eggs and stewed chickpeas in preserved lemon ($16), what you really want to try is the harissa “burger” ($17). This eminently Instagramunfriendly dish is a poem of preserved lemon and harissa-spiced ground beef in a grilled pita with baba ganoush, hummus and greens. MedinaCafe.com

BURDOCK & CO.

Forget the gluten-free Benny (although it’s quite tasty) and go for the fried chicken with buttermilk mashed potatoes and house pickles ($15). The crispy chunks of chicken are so juicy inside that the dribble down your chin isn’t even noticed as you scarf this very dill-y and delicious dish. Say it with me: Fried. Chicken. And. Mashed. Potatoes. If you need more comfort to

tooth, this café serves up the best – nay, only – red velvet pancakes ($14) in the city.Yes, it’s breakfast cake. With cream-cheese icing on top. Need I say more? Savoury options include chicken French toast ($15): buttermilk-fried bird sitting atop a toasted slab of bri-

oche, drizzled with tobaccospiced honey, jalapeño sour cream, pickled cabbage, tomato and green onion. Pair it with the Jammer ($7), a prosecco-based concoction that features peach and ginger, for a slightly sweet and rather refreshing tipple. JamCafes.com

AU COMPTOIR

BAO DOWN GASTROPUB

The Olympic Village satellite of the original Gastown location is bigger and louder, and offers “Island brunch” every weekend. Full of Filipino and Hawaiian flavours, it’s a menu designed to make even the biggest glut-

ton happy. Baos stuffed with spam and nori ($5) make for a nice starter, but it’s the longanisa (Filipino sausage) with garlic fried rice, tomato and onion ($18) that you want to feast on. Well, that or the sisig pork belly with white-corn cheese grits ($18). BaoDown.net W

TRUST

A Parisian-style café might not be your first choice when mulling over brunch options, but maybe it should be. While the burger ($17) – with caramelized onion, raclette, and an optional slab of foie gras – is a popular choice, there is great delight to be found in the ris de veaux ($19).Yes, it’s the veal sweetbreads that draw me here, pan-fried and graced with foraged mushrooms and sunchoke over a carrot purée and topped with a couple of poached eggs. Order the latter extra-soft so there are plenty of dipping opportunities. AuComptoir.ca

COCKTAILS & CRAFT BEER

This Valentine’s, say it with beer! Robert Mangelsdorf The Growler

@TheGrowlerBC

Brace yourselves: V-Day is upon us. Which means there’s a good chance you’re going to have to buy some sort of clichéd gift for your significant other as a lame token of your undying love and affection – or whatever. You’re obliged to do this by social convention, and if you don’t, you’d better believe there will be hell to pay. So, here’s an idea: This year, why don’t you buy your boyfriend/girlfriend/life partner something they’ll actually enjoy, like delicious BC craft beer? Paige Harley is the creator of the Brewquet (that’s pronounced brew-kay, like a bouquet, because it’s a pun, which seems to be going over a lot of people’s heads), and she’s got you covered. Instead of flowers, Harley will tastefully gift-wrap a bouquet of local craft beers, complete with beer-friendly snacks and a personalized gift card. The best part? Same-day delivery

What better way to say you love the beer enthusiast inyour life than with a Brewquet gift basket? Contributed photo in Vancouver, Burnaby, New West, Richmond and the North Shore, so you still have plenty of time before Valentine’s. “The Brewquet is the perfect way to express your love, with beer!” says Harley. This is good, because any time you’re giving beer to your loved one, it’s important to realize what that beer says about you. Your character and your intentions can be signaled by the beer you show up with on Valentine’s Day, and rocking up with a six-pack of PBR is definitely going to send the wrong message. How to build the perfect home bar Joanne Sasvari The Alchemist

@TheAlchemistBC

Back in 2012, when Rod Moore was about to open his dream bar, the Shameful Tiki Room, he ran into a problem. “It was a nightmare trying to find stuff – even basic tools and bitters,” he says, remembering running all over town to find shakers, jiggers, strainers and glassware. As for specialty tiki mugs? Not a chance. So, naturally, he opened a store: the Modern Bartender, which carries all of the bar tools anyone could ever need. “I had enough ego to think I’d come up with the idea,” he says, with a laugh. “All the big American cities – and Toronto, of course – have a store like this. It’s not a huge market, but there’s enough to keep us going.” Since then, as cocktail culture has moved into the mainstream, it’s become a whole lot easier to find bar tools at retailers ranging from Hudson’s Bay to Indigo to Pottery Barn. True, some are prettier than they are useful, which is why the pros still head to the Modern Bartender for their Yarai mixing glasses and teardrop bar spoons.

Great cocktails require the right gear. Dan Toulgoet photo But any tool is better than nothing. You simply cannot make proper cocktails without the right gear. So, if you plan to make drinks at home, you’ll need to invest in a few essential pieces. “The basics are, you need some sort of mixing vessel, whether it’s a shaker style or a mixing glass with a spoon,” says Moore. Classic cocktails are split evenly between stirred drinks – martinis, Old Fashioneds and the like – and shaken drinks. If you prefer one over the other, then invest in that. However, you might as well get both and leave all options open. When it comes to shakers, many home bartenders go for the somewhat fiddly

three-piece cobbler, which has a built-in strainer. Pros, though, prefer the control and simplicity of a two-piece shaker, whether it’s the cheap glass-and-tin Boston shaker or the luxe Parisienne or Calabrese models, which will run you $50 and up. As far as mixing glasses go, the classic is the Japanese yarai glass ($30-$60), with its diamond-etched pattern. To accompany that, you’ll also need a bar spoon, which can cost from $5 to $50. In addition, you’ll need a jigger (a one- or two-ounce model with smaller measurements marked on the inside), as well as a sharp knife and a Hawthorne strainer (the one with coils), which is good for

most drinks. If you’re making a lot of stirred drinks, you might also want a julep strainer, and if you’re shaking a lot of drinks, a finemesh strainer is a good idea. Those are the core tools. But you can stock your bar with plenty of other fun gadgets, including muddlers, juicers, bitters bottles, metal straws, vintage (or reproduction) glassware, even an absinthe fountain. Whatever you buy, invest in quality. The cheap tools break and bend; the markings wear off, and so do the finishes. Worse, cheap tools don’t work as well. They don’t feel as good in your hand, and they can turn making cocktails into a chore rather than a joy. “When people come in and they’re just starting out, I’ll tell them, ‘I get it.You don’t want to drop $200 on something you’re just starting with,” says Moore. “But if you stick with it, you’ll wish you spent the money. If you stay with this, you’re going to appreciate a better tool. And that applies to everything.” The Modern Bartender is located at 28 E. Pender. WINE

Sip your way around the world at the Wine Festival

Growing community with energy.

@MichaelaWine

If you really like wine, chances are you already have a ticket to at least one of the Vancouver International Wine Festival’s (VIWF) 54 events, kicking off Feb. 11. The heart of the festival is the Tasting Room, which gathers together all 180 participating wineries for a freestyle walk-about tasting. Needless to say, it’s impossible to sample all 600-plus wines being poured, so having a strategy is crucial. Mine goes something like this. Start with bubble. It’ll help acclimate your palate while you figure out the lay of the land. This year’s festival honours Canada’s 150th anniversary, and so features plenty of homegrown juice from BC, Ontario and Nova Scotia.Yes, Nova Scotia makes wine, and six wineries from the distant east coast will be flaunting their wares. The sparklers from Benjamin Bridge make for an invigorating first sip, and head winemaker Jean-Benoit Deslauriers will be pouring the Méthode Classique Brut NV and 2011 Brut. The former is based on L’Acadie, a hybrid grape that was bred specifically for chilly climes like Nova Scotia, while the latter is made from 100 per cent Chardonnay. If you’re still thirsty for Nova Scotia bubble, check out Blomidon Estate Vineyards and L’Acadie Vineyards. From there, move west, making sure you spend some time in Ontario before coming home. Though Ontario produces more wine than BC, we don’t see much of it here. Closson Chase demonstrates why people are excited about the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from

Introducing seed. Vancouver is one of the greenest, most livable cities in the world. Our population is growing and so is demand for energy. In fact, demand for electricity in Vancouver is expected to grow by 75% over the next 30 years. We can provide the clean renewable power that Vancouver needs, but our substations serving downtown Vancouver are aging and need to be upgraded or replaced.

the Prince Edward County VQA. In particular, the 2014 Closson Chase Vineyard Chardonnay is deftly balanced, slender and elegant, with just a hint of oak for added complexity. Stop by Château Des Charmes for its charmingly juicy, berryladen 2013 Gamay Noir from Niagara-on-the-Lake. I also recommend checking out the range of Pinot Noir at Domaine Queylus; this Niagara Peninsula winery boasts renowned winemaker Thomas Bachelder, who’ll be at the VIWF to speak about the wines. With 60-plus BC wineries partaking, it’s difficult to narrow down the highlights to just one or two. It’s always worth catching up with the latest releases from CedarCreek, Laughing Stock and Tantalus. There are sure to be interesting wines on offer from Liquidity, Pentâge, Sperling and Stag’s Hollow, as well. Just remember to venture beyond the Okanagan Valley. Averill Creek and Unsworth, both from Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley, will be there, while Baillie-Grohman and Harper’s Trail represent the emerging regions of the Kootenays and Kamloops, respectively. After toasting to the homeland, take some time to

explore wines from abroad – it’s an international festival, after all. France, Italy and California all have strong contingents this year, but don’t let these giants completely distract you from the likes of Greece and Croatia. The Alpha Estate table will be a great introduction to fascinating native-Greek whites like Assyrtiko and Malagouzia, along with the savoury, structured red Xinomavro featured in the 2013 Florina Hedgehog Vineyard. From Croatia, Stina is returning to the VIWF for the third year in a row with its top-notch examples of Pošip and Plavac Mali. This year it’s bringing along some new everyday drinking wines: The 2015 Cuvée White (Pošip blended with Vuguva and Chardonnay) simply screams summer, from its scene of the Dalmatia Coast on the label to the fresh, zingy, characterful wine in the bottle. W

Our usual way of doing things would be to find and buy a piece of land and build a substation on it. But that means putting a substation on land that could otherwise be used for housing, businesses, schools, or parks. A substation that neighbours would always see.

A better idea? Instead, what if we used money and land more wisely and built two new electricity substations below ground, while using the space above them for new schools, new daycare spaces and improved parks.

Proudly serving Vancouver’s GLBT Community for more than 15 years.

CHUTZPAH! FESTIVAL

Trump, teenage bullies, mass injustice—but ya gotta laugh MICHAEL WHITE @westendervan

Judy Gold is a living testament to poet George Herbert’s legendary proclamation, “Living well is the best revenge.” But the stand-up, actor, writer and self-proclaimed “big mouth” is rarely content – especially not in recent weeks. In keeping with the psychological profile of seemingly every comedian throughout history, discontent is Gold’s fuel, and the tragicomedy of the human race all too often penetrates whatever patches of her skin have yet to callous. In the midst of the Trump administration’s first days in the White House, her rage is a white noise that never shuts off. But her emotions are still too raw for her to find a joke in it. In the meantime, it at least helps her let off steam to say, “Someone’s gotta stop this fucking asshole.” Gold, who performs next Friday (Feb. 24) as part of the Chutzpah! Festival, essentially fashioned her career in direct response to the fucking assholes in her midst. Growing up in suburban New Jersey – Jewish, closeted, and six feet tall before she was old enough to drive – she was a constant target of abuse by her peers. But it wasn’t until she was a sophomore, studying music at Rutgers University, that she discovered comedy, performing a 10-minute stand-up set in response to a dare from a friend. “I had found my calling,” she said in a 2014 interview with Forbes. Calling from a fitness centre in her long-time home of Manhattan (she works out frequently to combat anxiety), Gold says that, at age 54, her motivations as a comedian are still similar to what they were when she began over 30 years ago. “Being an outsider, humour is the most disarming skill one could have,” she says. “My fearlessness onstage comes from the fact that I went through my childhood being humiliated constantly: ‘Nothing you do is going to affect me.’ I’m proud of who I am. Despite the bullying, here I am. I’m a survivor.” When she performed that first brief set, in her student lounge, Gold was living in a freethinking dorm and had found her people, who ac-

Dance duo finds comedy in the serious MICHAEL WHITE @westendervan

Comedian Judy Gold performs Friday, Feb. 24, as part of the Chutzpah! Festival. Contributed cepted her as she was. She had already transcended her teenage tormentors. “But it’s not like they ever go away. It’s not like I don’t still dream about it,” she says, laughing goodnaturedly. “I remember, in my early 30s, I didn’t want to walk past a schoolyard. I’d cross the street in New York City so I wouldn’t have to walk by the children or adolescents. For many years when I’d walk down the street, if I heard laughing, I thought it was about me. You get a thick skin, but those feelings never go away.” Throughout her career – which includes a Daytime Emmy-winning stint as a writer and producer for The Rosie O’Donnell Show; a hit one-woman off-Broadway play (The Judy Show: My Life as a Sitcom); and appearances on Louie, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and dozens of other programs – Gold has made a point of advocating for causes that are important to her, foremost among them gay rights. Her age and geography gave her a front-row seat to the New York gay community being ravaged by AIDS while the Reagan administration

looked away, and the efforts (now, suddenly, under threat) to make marriage equality federal law. To her, life on- and offstage are porous, each feeding into the other. “In the late ’90s, after I had children, I remember being in Houston and I talked about marriage equality, and I’d list all these people: [school teacher] Mary Kay Letourneau had an affair with a 12-yearold student – they’re married now. The Menéndez brothers [who were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of their parents] – one of them got married in jail. And you’re saying my family isn’t valid? You can take these socially relevant points and subversive ideas, and make them into a joke that people can relate to. And in Houston, this guy, an army person, said, ‘You know, I never really thought about gays getting married. Now it kinda makes sense.’ It comes from rage. And sadness, which makes it vulnerable. You could be mad, mad, mad, but if there’s no vulnerability, there’s no funny. “You know, Donald Trump is not funny, because he takes himself so fucking

seriously,” she continues. “He’s the exact kind of guy that I grew up with and was calling me names. And look at him. He’s a fat fuck. He’s ugly. He’s got a fucking comb-over. He’s an idiot.” But the upside, of course – and why Gold and her colleagues in comedy live the lives they do – is that a laugh can be drawn from virtually any atrocity if the timing and the idea are right. “That’s how our brains work: Nothing is ever too soon for us. It doesn’t make us bad people; it makes us comedians, satirists,” she says. “And now, more than ever, I think it’s important to find the joke and find the irony, because there’s so much of it that’s floating around. I mean, SNL this past weekend” – which savaged Trump and his press secretary, Sean Spicer – “was so brilliant, one of the best episodes ever. That immediately took me out of my bad mood and made me think, ‘We can find the humour!’” • Judy Gold performs Friday, Feb. 24, atYork Theatre, with co-headliner Ali Hassan. Despite being known principally as a dancer, Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg’s relationship to comedy is equally ingrained in her history and disposition. “Because I’m a physical person, I started dancing very young, in grade school,” she recalls. “I couldn’t sit still, so the teacher thought I was learning-disabled. In order to navigate the situation, I would do comedy routines in the classroom. I would put my hairband over my eyes – long before Geordi La Forge did it on Star Trek, I might add – and that’s how I dealt with it.” Comedy and its role in our day-to-day struggle to “deal with” the indignities of life is central to empty.swimming. pool, a collaborative performance Friedenberg developed in tandem with Silvia Gribaudi, a fellow dancer from Turin, Italy. It makes its world premiere as part of the 2017 Chutzpah! Festival. Friedenberg became aware of Gribaudi when they performed separately at a festival in Edinburgh. Watching the Italian dancer perform her acclaimed A Corpo Libero, in which she comically strips down to her undergarments and shakes her body fat to the soundtrack of a hyperdramatic operatic aria, she immediately recognized a kindred spirit. The two have since worked together numerous times, including a residency at the Scotiabank Dance Centre in Vancouver. In empty.swimming.pool, the duo seeks to navigate “the role of comedy as a catalyst to questions of gender, culture, language and understanding” – both a somewhat ambiguous mission and a tall order. “What

kept coming up, that became the spine of the piece, is visibility and invisibility, being seen and not being seen,” Friedenberg explains. “We’re both women over 40, so that becomes, ‘Woah! That’s a real thing!’ When I was young, I was like, ‘That’s not gonna happen.’ It totally was gonna happen. I have a child, so that also became a factor in how your identity is removed, culturally. “Silvia’s got a whole other experience in Italy: Catholicism and an older culture, a more misogynist and homophobic culture,” she continues. “We’re looking at them from our individual perspectives, but it keeps coming down to the two of us: how we’re communicating, and how we’re communicating with the audience, because we both use comedy as a great tool that opens the door to potentially difficult things.” Although empty.swimming. pool was still being rehearsed at the time of our conversation, Friedenberg is confident that the end result will connect with audiences in the spirit she and Gribaudi intend: food for thought, but also fodder for laughter. “Comedy galvanizes people,” she says. “We might not all be on the same page politically, but we know we have to galvanize, because a divide-and-conquer thing is happening. Comedy is so potent that way, because we can laugh at ourselves, we can laugh at the situation, and we can laugh together. “As a woman, I have to laugh, otherwise I’m just gonna be so pissed off all the time,” she adds, laughing. “I’m not gonna be any fun!” • empty.swimmimg.pool runs Feb. 16-18 at Scotiabank Dance Centre.Tickets and info: ChutzpahFestival.com W

On this particular tour, the stereotypical beat-up van was replaced with what Wolf refers to in the film as “the most quintessential of Canadian vehicles: the canoe.” Using only paddle and portage power, and carrying little more than Ross’s guitar and ukelele, Wolf’s camera equipment, and some basic camping supplies,

The schedule also includes To the Ends of the Earth from Vancouver director Lavallee. expect anything, you can’t force anything. We just had to be open to the moment and let the experience roll.” Wild Ones, the album, is a tribute to people who don’t live within the paradigm of contemporary life, and its cinematic counterpart introduces viewers to those individuals – people like Dave Rogers, an 80-year-old wood carver and jug player who invites Wolf and Ross to stay in his guest room after discovering them settling in for the night on the edge of his property. Ross jams with Rogers and his wife as the couple play ragtime music on their homemade instruments, and “Peirson ends up doing a three-song set just for them, in this cozy cabin on the Ottawa River,” recalls Wolf. “It was one of those unscripted and unplanned interactions that end up being the most special, because we were all

Cut to a friendly catch-up a few years later, when “literally over beers one night, we came up with this idea: ‘Why don’t we tour your album and use a canoe instead of a van?’”Wolf recalls, chuckling. “With very little funding, we pulled the canoe out from under my cottage and started paddling.” Tour stops included the village of Nobel, Ontario, where Ross played an intimate living-room concert, and Massasauga Provincial Park, where Wolf filmed Ross bobbing in the lake and recharging for the travel day ahead. “The kind of filmmaking I do, it’s very reactive,” says Wolf. “The story will materialize from the experience, so you can’t

Patience a virtue for the Courtneys and their fans GREGORY ADAMS @gregoryadamsbc

While the music world often thrives on the quick turnover, four whole years separate Vancouver trio the Courtneys’ eponymous debut and their just-released follow up, The Courtneys II.With that in mind, you could argue that there’s a meta bent to drummer/vocalist Jen Twynn Payne’s lyrics on the new album’s jangling, stomping

“Tour,” in which she sings “What you are and what you want to be / It takes a long time.” Guitarist Courtney Loove is a little hesitant to confirm how self-reflective that line is, considering she doesn’t write any lyrics for the band, but she concedes that the album has been a long time coming. “Being in the Courtneys has definitely taught me that there’s value to being patient,” she says, on the line from her recently adopted hometown of Los Angeles, where she’s working as an animator on a children’s series called Niko and the Sword of Light. It’s already been a prolific 2017 for Loove. On top of the new Courtneys LP, the debut cassette from her side project, Gum Country, came out in January through LA’s Lollipop Records. Both albums traffic in pastel smears of indie guitar, simply stated vocals and to-the-point beats. While the Gum Country album came together quite quickly, that’s not to say the Courtneys were lacking in ambition. The sophomore full-length’s “Iron Deficiency” was written shortly after the band’s first collection was released in June of 2013, while the excellent ’80s-vampire-

flick-referencing “Lost Boys” was issued as a single later that year. The holdup owed to a mix of must-take opportunities, like an opening slot on a North American tour with Tegan and Sara, and the band’s desire to put together a worthy sequel. “We were playing a ton and touring, so we were writing songs here and there, but it was slow. It took us two years to have enough for another record, and then it was a process to record it, too,” Loove explains, revealing that the band abandoned a batch of subpar recordings before tracking The Courtneys II a second time. Like their debut, the new release traffics in peppedup, four-on-the-floor drum work, Sydney Koke’s sodasweet bass fizz, and Loove’s limber, lightly-distorted guitar. Despite Payne’s penchant for posting Instagram videos of herself singing songs by artists like the Pistol Annies, “Country Song” isn’t the Courtneys’ formal entry into the realm of C&W. “Jen loves country music, I think Sydney kind of hates country music, and I’m kind of in the middle,” the guitarist says, adding that Koke had initially balked at what she perceived to be a twangy lead riff. “It was just a

Liana’s Showcase

working title for that jam for forever. We thought [‘Country Song’] was a really good name for it, ultimately. It never sounded country. I think it sounds like Big Star.” With the trio preparing to get back on the road for a headlining tour, and production wrapping on Niko and the Sword of Light for the season, Loove’s animation career is being put on hold.Though nothing’s set, the artist has plans to work her day gig into the Courtneys’ itinerary at some point. “There was a brief moment where I was asked by Nickelodeon to pitch a series. I pitched the Courtneys Animated Series,” Loove reveals, going on to disclose that the project stalled over creative differences with the network’s brass. “They wanted us to change the characters, and we were just like, ‘This is based on us!’ The silver lining is that if the Courtneys’ devoted fan base can wait four years between albums, they probably won’t mind waiting a little longer for their animated debut. W • The Courtneys II is released Feb. 17 through Flying Nun Records.

Last-minute Valentine’s gifts that don’t seem last-minute tor for the kind of woman who uses a photo of Elizabeth Taylor as her screensaver, mimics the baby-doll voice of Joey Lauren Adams and always refers to herself as a “girl.” This golden, diamond-shaped vibrator fits snugly in the palm of your hand, and is kind of the equivalent to demanding a huge cubic zirconia as your engagement ring. It’s all faux-glitz and kitsch, but the mechanics of the vibrator itself are solid. Plus it’s rechargeable, waterproof and made from body-safe ABS plastic. Sweet but timid Carly is looking for a serene home. Megan Posnikoff/Of Earth and Soul Photography

Adopteez: Carly NOA NICHOL @adopteezpleez

Donna Healey-Ogden, of Canadian Animal Rescue & Extended Shelter (C.A.R.E.S.), isn’t quite sure where Carly came from. All she knows is that, in September 2016, her organization received a call from the Vancouver Orphaned Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA) asking if it could take in the small eight-year-old tabby. “VOKRA has no shelter and, because Carly is timid and doesn’t like change, she wasn’t doing well in her foster home, where she was living with young children

Westender.com

and dogs,” says HealeyOgden. “She simply couldn’t cope with it.” And so, Carly was transferred to the warm, quiet Langley shelter, where her routine would be stabilized and she would have a chance to come out of her shell with the love and attention of caring staff and volunteers. “We were told she was doing some marking in her foster home, likely because she was nervous, but we’ve had absolutely no problems with that here,” says HealeyOgden. “In fact, despite her shy nature, she’s a wonderful little cat. She has been spayed, has all her shots and

no medical problems. She’s doing much better in this environment, where things are much more calm.” A serene home environment with a patient person, where dogs and very young children are absent, she adds, will be key to Carly’s successful adoption. “Carly’s adopter will very likely have to be the kind of person who understands cats, who is aware that she could get scared,” HealeyOgden explains. “It could take six months or even a year to earn Carly’s affection, but I’m certain that if someone who wants to really help a cat is willing to give her what she needs, she will come around. Guaranteed.” C.A.R.E.S. fundraising chair Clive Ellis says although Carly has been part of several adoption events that the shelter conducts in collaboration with the Langley location of PetSmart, her timid demeanour causes her to hide from the crowds. In other words, she has, through no real fault of her own, been overlooked. “There is no bad cat,” Healey-Ogden emphasizes. “You just need to accept them, especially when it’s a cat with an unknown or unstable history. The love, affection and companionship will happen, even if it takes some time. After all, it isn’t until a cat gets a home that the real relationship starts.” • Can you help Carly come

out of her shell and give her the safe, loving forever home she so desires? Read her full profile on the C.A.R.E.S. website, CaresCatShelter.com, where complete adoption details can also be found. W

SUDOKU

By Rob Brezsny

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
