Music community mourns passing of BobCats’ Bob White Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown

@GrantLawrence

“He was my musical brother.” That’s how BobCats lead guitarist and keyboardist Danny Casavant describes his former band mate, Bob White. In what came as a “complete shock” to family, friends and fans,White, the lead singer and guitarist of the beloved Vancouver pub rockers, died suddenly on February 3. He was 65. No cause of death has been given. “We had no advanced warning whatsoever,” says Casavant. “We had gigs booked well into the year all over town.” White was a lovable, longtime fixture of the West End. He was a musician’s musician and a consummate performer, and was beloved by his fans. Those followers passionately danced and partied with White and the BobCats for a run of “16 years less two months,” says Casavant, at the Dover Arms Pub on Denman Street, every Sunday from 4 to 8pm. “Sunday was our busiest day of the week, thanks to the BobCats,” says Tristan Vanin, manager of the Dover Arms since 2005. “They had a huge following. People came in from all parts of Vancouver. It was like church in here on Sundays. Everybody loved Bob and loved to dance to the BobCats.”

BobCats front man Bob White, who passed away suddenly on Feb. 3. Contributed photo Vanin was also caught completely off guard by White’s sudden passing. “I was speechless,” he says. “He was in the pub just a few days earlier and said he wasn’t feeling well.” Besides the Sunday gig, White was a regular at the pub. He lived just two blocks away. White came of age in the extremely fertile Winnipeg rock ’n’ roll scene of the 1960s, cutting his musical teeth alongside superstars

like the Guess Who and Neil Young. He played in a string of Winnipeg bands like the Faction, the Back Pages, Justin Tyme, and the Spice before relocating to Vancouver in the early ’80s. Here on the West Coast, he formed Fat City, which became a mainstay at Expo 86, with Casavant. In 1990, White began another long run as guitarist of the Surreal McCoys, who rocked the Roxy several nights a week until ’98. When the BobCats started

playing at the Dover Arms back in 2001, they were an immediate hit and a stroke of booking genius, according to Casavant. “Most musicians were gigging Friday and Saturday, so Sunday was a free day. There was no competition! We played a wide array of music from the ’50s and ’60s, and it really resonated with the crowd right away. Bob was the focal point of it all.” For many, Sundays in the West End just won’t be the same without the BobCats to dance to. “We watched life happen in that room as we played,” reminisces Casavant. “People who met on the dance floor went on to get married, that sort of thing.” There are several events planned in the coming weeks to remember White: x} z { union on Wednesday, Mar. 8, at the Roxy u ~ ~ }~ ~} ing the surviving Bobcats and special guests on Friday, Mar. 10, at Federico’s Supper Club r ~ t with speaking and musical performances, on Sunday, Mar. 19, at the Dover Arms Asked how he thinks White will be remembered, Casavant doesn’t hesitate. “Bob was a great musician, front man and singer. He had the ‘X’ factor. He had the rare ability to project a real joy through his performance, and he’ll be deeply missed. It still hasn’t fully hit me that he’s gone.” W

Aquarium to phase out captive cetaceans by 2029 MEGAN STEWERT @meganhstewart

Despite the mysterious death of two belugas in November, the Vancouver Aquarium intends to bring up to five of the animals back to its tanks when a massive expansion exhibit opens in two years. However, they will phase out captivity of cetaceans by 2029 and, in the meantime, will focus on research but not breeding. A virus or toxin is the suspected cause of the Nov. 25 death of Aurora, who was 30, and was the first beluga to conceive and give birth in captivity in Canada. Her calf, 21-yearold Qila, died nine days before her. The aquarium’s lead veterinarian did not rule out poisoning and opened the door for speculation about intentional wrongdoing. “Right now we have no obvious sign of mortal-

Members of groups such as the Sea Shepherds and No Whales in Captivity have protested outside the aquarium in the past. Chris Cheung photo ity,” said Martin Haulena on Monday. “I will stress that nothing is off the table now.” Early necropsy reports do not reveal a definitive cause of death, but Haulena said the older beluga showed signs of significant liver damage. He said early tests have ruled out bacterial and fungal causes.

Aquarium president and CEO, John Nightingale said the deaths appear to be connected given the sudden onset and similar symptoms. Cetaceans will not return to the same tank where Aurora and Qila fell ill and died until a cause of death is identified, he said. The aquarium has six cetaceans on loan at marine parks

across North America. The Vancouver Park Board, which leases land to the aquarium, is reviewing its policies about whales and cetaceans in captivity. A special meeting is scheduled for March 8. The aquarium’s public relations team also published a 10-point list of its professional conservation goals and mandate, which it argues justifies keeping cetaceans at its facilities, as a rebuttal to being “attacked by a network of animal rights groups.” Later that day at the park board meeting, a group of eight speakers wearing “No More Dead Cetaceans” t-shirts addressed commissioners in response to the aquarium press conference. “We expect you guys to do something now. We are not going anywhere,” one speaker said. “Why would you bring [cetaceans] in if you’re phasing out captivity?” –Story courtesy of the Vancouver Courier

Poem of the week Poetic Licence

@westendervan

Welcome to Poetic Licence – a new weekly poetry forum, hosted by us, featuring words by local poets. First up? Vancouver Poet Laureate Rachel Rose, with “Bees”.

BEES The farmer asked me to host a hive and I said yes thinking honey, without the sting, thinking do your small part and let the bees do theirs. The hive was a box of many rooms hot with life. It throbbed under its tin roof. All summer their flight path hung its line of light across the deck. Those gold cells swam to the door of the hive, dusted with lust from blossom. If a wasp dared come, they were ready to kamikaze down, force the intruder out in a buzz-tussle to the death. I crouched. I watched the stinger torn from the bee’s body trailing cream. Even in death, bees are never lonely. The hive is myriad. The hive is more than the bees. Sometimes I stood close to vibrate with them, drone of sun, pleasure of reaching beyond the limited human. O stamen, pistil, I let them tangle in my hair I hung up their flight path. Then came the virus, and then the wasps. There was no keeping them out. I crushed a few invaders, before I stopped, stupid human, helpless as any God before the laws of relativity. The farmer and I could barely look at each other and the leaves fell and brought winter. But can we try again? I begged, like a woman who wakes to a bed of blood, can we try again? The serious farmer said, Of course. The struggle is all that keeps me here, in this plague time where bees drop, the hive is cold, a few hornets drift, a virus drifts, pesticides drift over lawns lush as death, fields of strawberries so poisoned and perfect one bite brings the sleep of a hundred years. Can we try again?

Rachel Rose is the Poet Laureate of Vancouver. The winner of two Pushcart Prizes, she is the author of four books of poetry. Her most recent poetry collection, Marry & Burn (Harbour), was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award. Her non-fiction book, The Dog Lover Unit: Lessons in Courage from theWorld’s K9 Cops, is forthcoming from St. Martin’s Press. Duelling petitions argue over police presence in Pride MEGAN STEWART @meganhstewart

A group of LGBTQ activists handed over a petition on Monday (Feb. 20) to the Vancouver Pride Society, arguing there is a place for uniformed police officers in the city’s annual Pride Parade. With more than 2,600 signees, the message is a direct response to Black Lives Matter Vancouver after the anti-oppression activists launched a petition of their own calling for the removal of uniformed police from the parade. On Feb. 7, BLMV started their petition, pointing out the parade is a protest that began, in part, as a reaction to institutionalized oppression and homophobia as well as police brutality. While recognizing the Vancouver Police Department plays an important role of law enforcement and crowd control during the parade, they want all uniformed police, including VPD and RCMP officers, out of the celebrations. “We look forward to this voluntary withdrawal from the parade itself as a symbolic gesture and actual sign of support for [people of colour] and black communities, and an attempt to bridge the divide that the effects of institutionalized racism impose on our daily lives,” reads a portion of the petition. Last year, BLMV and the VPD negotiated the removal of the armoured police vehicle from the parade,

but BLM did not succeed in their request that uniformed officers not march. In Toronto, activists staged a sit-in and stopped that city’s parade for nearly half an hour and presented eight demands that have since been adopted by the Pride Society, including the removal of police floats and uniformed marchers. Former VPD officer Lorimer Shenher wrote in support of the removal of police from the parade and more leniency for Black Lives Matter activists. Writing in online newsmagazine the National Observer, Shenher proposed the same compromise: “For the necklace-tossing, candythrowing, parade-marching cops, keep them in plainclothes just like the bank tellers, politicians and artists. After all, you’re a person first and a cop second, right?” As an LGBTQ officer himself, Shenher said it’s the institution, not the individual, that is the symbol of oppression and racism. “That uniform carries with it the weight of thousands of children removed from indigenous families throughout Canada’s history. It represents hundreds of non-white people stopped and frisked without legal grounds simply because of their skin colour. That uniform carries with it the abuse and intimidation of LGBTQ people, sex workers, mentally ill people, economically vulnerable people, many forced onto the streets

to interact with police often, sometimes with bad results,” he wrote. The pro-police counterpetition, titled “Our Pride Includes Our Police,” quickly garnered thousands of signatures, nearly three times the 875 that have so far signed on in support of Black Lives Matter. The creators of the petition allege the racism on display in the U.S. and parts of Eastern Canada does not reflect reality in Vancouver. Black Lives Matter grew in response to police shootings and violence against unarmed black men, women and children. In Vancouver, the first gay and lesbian police liaison committee was created at the VPD in 1977, and police have marched in the Vancouver Pride Parade since 2002. “The visible involvement of the Vancouver Police Department and the RCMP in the parade,” states the counter-petition, “signifies the progress we have made in our struggle for LGBTQ equality.” The petition was created by Velvel Steele, a trans and sex worker rights advocate; Gordon Hardy, a co-founder of the city’s Gay Liberation Front; Sandy-Leo Laframbois, a trans activist and Métis two-spirit elder; and gay journalist Kevin Dale McKeown. Both the Black Lives Matter petition, and the reponse petition can be found at Change.org. W

Local artist Andy Dixon retains lawyer in intellectual property scuffle SARAH RIPPLINGER @sarahripplinger

It started with a Facebook post that compared two similar-looking works of art: one by 37-year-old artist and North Vancouver native Andy Dixon, the other by John Holcomb, a 32-year-old painter from Topeka, Kansas. “I feel personally compelled to come to the aid and defence of my friend and fellow artist Andy Dixon,” said the post, authored by Graeme Berglund, a Vancouver-based artist and the founder and creative director of the now folded The Cheaper Show. “There is an artist named John Holcomb (based in Kansas) who has been replicating Andy’s distinct subject matter, colour palette, process, systems of distinct mark making, themes and ideologies that Andy has spent years developing on his own.” Within a few days, Berglund’s original Facebook post received over 150 shares and almost the same number of comments, along with the attention of Vice magazine, which recently published an article about the controversy

on its website. Berglund, who first met Dixon 20 years ago through the punk rock scene, said he has watched Dixon’s growth as an artist and painter, and has been impressed by the evolution of Dixon’s style. He felt compelled to make a statement on social media after seeing Holcomb’s work and noting similarities to Dixon’s that Berglund felt might have overstepped the boundaries of interpretation and fallen into the grey area of replication. In a mid-February Instagram post, Holcomb does cite Dixon – along with Matisse, Basquiat, Picasso, Andy Warhol and several other artists – as being an inspiration behind his work. That many artists draw inspiration from the work of other artists – including Dixon, who is quoted in a 2011 article for Vancouver is Awesome as saying that he looks up to the works of Basquiat and Warhol – is something of which Berglund is keenly aware. “We’re all aware that, as artists, you can be inspired by people,” said Berglund in a telephone interview, “but Andy has been waiting patiently for John to make an arc to the left or right [to take his art in a different direction] and do his own thing.” Another plot twist is that a

gallery that once represented Dixon – as recently as 2015 in New York, according to Dixon’s website – is now representing Holcomb. Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery represented Holcomb at the 2017 Outside Art Fair in New York where, according to a January 23 post on Holcomb’s Facebook page: “I sold all of the paintings. … I outsold every other gallery at the fair.” The issue of money, and who is or isn’t making it, is also an element in this debate that cannot be overlooked. Dixon has hired legal representation from Paul E. Bain, a Toronto-based lawyer who specializes in business and entertainment law, including intellectual property rights. Although there are few details about the legal action (Bain said in an email that they “would rather not comment on an ongoing legal matter”), there is reason to believe the legal proceedings would involve Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery and John Holcomb. “Andy is a commercial artist,” said Berglund, “and this [issue with Holcomb] could affect the path of his critical success in the future.” Holcomb, Dixon and Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery did not respond to our requests for comment. @FoodgirlFriday

In this multi-city series, Anya Levykh explores what Canadian cuisine means in different parts of BC, as well as in the rest of Canada. As you’ve no doubt heard, it’s our country’s 150th birthday this year. The notion of what it means to be a Canadian has gone through its fair share of debate, but certain universal truths are still undisputed. We are a people who embrace innovation and diversity. We are a people who understand the importance of our natural resources, in terms of both production and ecology. And we are a people who really like to eat well. We celebrate the vast array of foods that are grown, raised and produced in our fields. We lust after both traditional and contemporary (and sometimes fused) global cuisines. So, it seems proper to start off this series in our provincial capital.Victoria may not have Vancouver’s population, but the sheer number and quality of its restaurants is noteworthy. In that spirit, here are a few restaurants – among many others – that offer a small taste of the many-flavoured Canadian profile.

It’s been almost a decade since this lively bistro opened. Its small-plates focus has been the standard through two sets of owners and various chefs, but the consistency of the concept goes beyond a serving trend. Locals have long been in love with Fol Epi, a little bakery that churns out some pretty serious bread. The owners expanded the space about a year ago and eventually opened a full-service restaurant that, in addition to offering endless plates of their hugely addictive loaves, serves up food that is not only almost entirely organic,

Named one of Canada’s 100 best restaurants for 2016, this unassuming spot lives in a restored 19thcentury house in James Bay. The locally-sourced, organic and seasonal menu is served up in a full-service restaurant and a to-go café. Healthy food that makes you feel good is how owner Hayley Rosenberg describes the menu, and it succeeds on both counts. For brunch one morning, we tried the “Benny in the Moment,” a gluten-free version that featured poached eggs over roasted sweet-potato halves topped with sautéed kale and mushrooms. The kale still had a good bite to it and the mushrooms were earthy and rich, and the cashew hollandaise was one of the best I’ve tasted, period. And while there is a focus on plant-based dishes, meat is available, such as the delightful “Black Forest” bacon that is cooked in the oven and comes with thin, blackened edges. Don’t miss the turmeric-infused chai tea with almond milk and honey, or the spiked rosemary lemonade. (Yes, it’s licensed, and the cocktails are good.) nourishkitchen.ca

PART AND PARCEL

Counter-service restaurants might be the new “in” thing, but if the food ain’t good, people won’t come for any price. No worries at Part and Parcel, a bright, airy space in Quadra Village that offers sandwiches, soups and sundry other dishes infused with European and Middle Eastern flavours. Kamut-crusted fried chicken is otherworldly delicious, served on bread from Fry’s, a local organic bakery that mills its own flour. A salad of charred turnips, pear and smoked duck heart is odd to the ear but heaven to the palate. Moroccan fries with ras el hanout are perfect for nibbling along with a craft beer or cider. partandparcel.ca

FAIRMONT EMPRESS

The storied Bengal Lounge, with its oodles of Benares brass and palm fronds, might be a thing of the past, but the classic afternoon tea service, served on china imprinted with the royal insignia, lives on.What speaks more to Canadiana in Victoria than that most classic of British pastimes? At the Empress, the service begins with a bound book that contains glassed-in wooden cubbies showcasing the different looseleaf teas available. The classic scones and sandwiches are made to order, and strawberry preserves are infused with lavender from the rooftop gardens. Don’t miss the Empress cake (a favourite of HM the Q), studded with nuts and raisins. fairmont.com/ empress-victoria W

COCKTAILS & WINE

How to stock your spirits cabinet Joanne Sasvari The Alchemist

@TheAlchemistBC Every cocktail starts with a base spirit. Every home cocktail bar should do the same. The question is, what spirits do you really need to stock at home? What’s worth spending money on (and what isn’t)? After all, those bright, shiny bottles can be expensive. That’s why some experts advise you to build your bar one drink at a time: It’s cheaper that way. Love Manhattans? All you need is a bottle of rye or bourbon, some sweet vermouth, and bitters. Too bad, though, if your guests would rather have a gin Martini. Rhett Williams is not one of those experts. The head bartender at Nightingale believes being a good host means being able to offer your guests what they like. Besides, he says, “I always want to have a different drink every time, unless it’s whisky.” True, you don’t have to go as far as he does at the restaurant, where he has more than 150 bottles on the back bar. Nor should you necessarily opt for the cheapest bottle – which often isn’t very good – or the most expensive in any spirit category. “If I’m making cocktails, I’m looking for value,” he says. “I’m not necessarily looking for the most amazing flavour, because you might lose it anyway. I’m looking for value.”

Dining or not, these restos are top draws for wine Spirits at Nigtingale. Dan Toulgoet photo Williams suggests investing in around half a dozen basic spirits of good quality. Here’s what you need to get started:

tinctive botanicals, they overwhelm the cocktails they’re in. “Tanqueray is simple: dry, juniper, citrus. It works.”

WHISKY

A lightly-aged rum for cocktails and an older one for sipping. “If I’m making daiquiris or a big bowl of punch, then Havana Club [Añejo 3 Años] works,” he says. “It’s also good in a mojito.”

A bottle of rye, a bottle of bourbon and, if you like, scotch for sipping. “Every bar has to have a bottle of 100-per cent rye. I think American rye balances best, and Rittenhouse is my go-to,” says Williams. “And bourbon. I think the bestvalue bourbon is Wild Turkey 101 or Buffalo Trace.”

GIN

A versatile, well-balanced London Dry style. “I feel like my go-to here is Tanqueray, because it works with everything,” says Williams, noting that some gins have such dis-

RUM

BRANDY OR COGNAC

This depends on your budget. For cocktails, Williams likes the smooth, wellbalanced Torres 5 brandy from Spain. “I almost prefer it to cognac in a Sidecar,” he admits, adding that if you’re willing to spend the money, “The cognac you need, hands down, is the Pierre Ferrand 1840.”

TEQUILA AND MEZCAL

How smoky do you like your agave spirit? Aged tequilas make great sipping spirits, but for Margaritas and the like, it’s the clean, grassy taste of a blanco like Uno Mas that you need.

Whatever you do, look for tequila that is 100-per-cent agave. If you want to add the smoky taste of mezcal to your bar, Los Siete Misterios Doba Yej “is the stepping stone for getting into mezcal. It’s fruity and it’s not too intensely smoky,” says Williams.

VODKA

Your call. It may be the best-selling spirit in the world, but Williams doesn’t believe it’s crucial – unless, of course, you have a regular guest who drinks it. “I would say no. I just don’t enjoy vodka,” he says. “It’s not an elitist thing, honestly, but even a Moscow Mule tastes better as a Gin Mule.” Once you have the basics, all you need to add is a versatile liqueur such as Cointreau, a bottle each of dry and sweet vermouth, and some aromatic bitters. “And now you can build 50 drinks,” says Williams. “I think that’s the better way to go, because then you can make more than an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan.” W

OLD-FASHIONED PARTY BASE Nightingale head bartender Rhett Williams created this base to take the time-consuming part out of making an Old Fashioned, and to make it versatile enough to use with just bourbon, brandy, rye or rum. It’s perfect for hosting a crowd. Note that this recipe needs at least 24 hours before it’s ready to use. " ? @MSP _7;` VG[ OMQY4U]>T PM8]Q " ? Michaela Morris By the Bottle @MichaelaWine

Obviously, the main point of going to a restaurant is to eat. But for me, the wine list is just as important as the food. Throw in a bar or lounge for ambiance, and chances are I’ll be back often for a pre- or post-dinner glass when I’m not looking for the full meal deal. I consider these outings research, and many of my happiest wine discoveries happen on such occasions. Here are some of my favourites. Hawksworth (hawksworthrestaurant.com) is my go-to downtown, especially when I’m craving a sneaky nip of bubble late afternoon – the house Champagne is the excellent NV Henriot Brut Souverain ($15 for a taster or $29 for a full flute). It’s easy to get stuck in once you start perusing what is surely one of Vancouver’s best lists. Wine director Bryant Mao and his equally stellar team of somms have all the basis covered. Want a crisp, refreshing white? Try the 2015 Pietradolce Carricante ($16/glass) from the lofty slopes of Sicily’s Mount Etna. Prefer a bold and gutsy red? Go for the 2013 Undurraga ‘Terrior Hunter’ Carignan ($17/glass) for a unique taste of Chile. I was thrilled when Vij’s (vijsrestaurant.ca) moved to Cambie Street. Along with being closer to my hood, the “holding lounge” is an additional bonus: I’m quite content to simply camp with some wine while the room rotates around me. Wine director Mike Bernardo has been running the program at Vij’s for as long as I can remember, but he hasn’t lost a drop of his enthusiasm. He’s also been a huge champion of the NV Medice Ermete ‘Concerto’ Lambrusco Reggiano DOC, which he pours for $12 a glass. This dry Italian sparkling red is modest in alcohol but bold in character, and a smart

pairing with the cassava fries and pakoras that circulate in the lounge. Les Faux Bourgeois (lesfauxcbourgeois.com) is even closer to home. It’s also my friends’ secret weapon to lure me out of the house. (I rarely resist the last-minute invitation when pals call me from the bar.) A quick catchup over a glass as I steal their frites feels like a mini-vacation in France. My current tipple of choice here is the 2014 Odé d’Aydie Pacherenc du Vic Bilh AOC Sec ($9.50/glass). From France’s southwest, it’s a blend of the native Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng grapes, which make for a juicy mouthful of apricot, pink grapefruit, almond and pear. Kitsilano is further afield for me, but it has its draws. I first stumbled into Mission (missionkits.ca) a few months after it opened, while waiting for a table at Maenam down the street. I appreciated the warm welcome and was immediately intrigued by the extensive by-the-glass program, spanning a large range of prices and regions. For $9, you can stay local with the charmingly aromatic 2015 Sea Star Ortega from Pender Island, or spring for the elegant 2014 White Rose Pinot Noir from Oregon ($26/glass). With Rachelle Goudreau (formerly of the Wine Bar at Provence Marinaside) now at the helm, the selection is sure to stay fresh. Finally, after a Gastown yoga session, I sometimes stop by Wildebeest (wildebeest.ca) to prolong my Zen-like state. The young Justin Everitt has put together an eclectic list, from sake to wines of every colour (including orange). The 2015 Laughing Stock Amphora ($14/glass), from the Okanagan, falls into the latter category. A blend of Viognier and Roussanne, it harks back to winemaking of yesteryear: Skins are macerated with the juice for months, and the wine is aged in clay vessels. Have a seat at the bar and ask Justin about it. W

CRAFT BEER & DINING OUT

India’s favourite snack has endless possibilities BALA YOGESH @yo_bala

One of the most famous and traditional South Indian foods is the dosa. Similar to a pancake or crepe, it’s made from fermented rice and lentil batter. Dosa is widely consumed across the Indian subcontinent, and over the past few years it has been making its presence felt in Vancouver. There are more than 100 varieties of region-specific dosa served all over the world, but the most basic dosa is made from a batter in which rice and lentils are soaked in water, and the result is fermented overnight. Most surveys rate masala dosa – a cousin of the plain dosa, stuffed with mashed-potato curry – as one of the most popular varieties. But the options are endless. Two Vancouver restaurants, Dosa Hut (7233 Fraser St.) and Dosa Factory (1345 Kingsway), boast 100 varieties of dosa on their menus. According to the chefs of these restaurants, some of the varieties served are not available in India. Xavier George, head chef at Dosa Factory, says dosas are seen as a healthy alternative to junk food. “In Canada, a lot of people want food that is gluten-free, and oil-free food, and they are looking for healthy stuff, so we started making dosas for these people.” Kalaiarasan Selvaraj, owner and head chef of Dosa Hut, says people across the world are now looking for healthy and organic food. “If people

Each dosa has a different flavour – whatever you like in pizzas, it’s there in dosas, too. [But] pizza has gluten, while dosas are gluten-free and vegan, too.” The plain dosa is traditionally served with three chutneys: a red chutney, made with tomato; a green one, with mint and cilantro; and a white coconut-flavoured chutney. The dipping sauce is called sambar, and is made of lentils and vegetables. Both Dosa Hut and Dosa Factory claim to have a list of exclusive dosa varieties not available elsewhere. Dosa Hut’s exclusives are Nilagiri,

butter chicken, and salad dosa. The list of exclusives at Dosa Factory includes Mysore Rava, cheese palak, and paper dosa with seafood. Selvaraj says the dosas at Dosa Hut cater to both traditional and more modern, adventurous palates. “We’re making it ethnic to those who want it… It depends on what and how they order it.” The fusion dosas, like the Masala dosa, are derived from the plain dosa, and extra toppings are added on top of it. “The fusion dosas, according to the Canadian culture, is more easier for the kids,” says Selvaraj. “We’re making traditional and fusion dosas, and more people like the fusion.” W

As Father Winter’s wispy fingers continue to creep into our homes, we find our own fingers reaching for the thermostat to ward off the subzero chills. So, when you crack open that Pinot Noir that’s been patiently waiting in your kitchen, it, too, has breached that cosy temperature of 22C. But it’s room temperature, right? No! drink your Pinot Noir at 20C, you are actually losing out on what the wine truly offers. Here’s a nippy guide to getting your temperatures right, so you can get the most out of your bottles: Bubbles: 10C to 12C. Cold keeps the bubbles tiny and vibrant, otherwise the wine becomes foamy. Sweeter styles can be enjoyed even

colder, around 8 degrees C. White wine: 10C to 14C. Lighter-bodied whites drink best colder (10C to 12C), while fuller and richer styles express delightfully around 13C to 14C. Red wine: 10C to 18C. Lighter styles drink best cooler, while fuller reds, aged reds or highly tannic reds benefit from a few degrees of warmth. Note how much cooler this is than your “room temperature,” so, yes, put that bottle in the fridge for 20 minutes prior to opening. Cin cin! Story courtesy ofVITA Daily

Dageraad mishap brings out best in BC beer scene Robert Mangelsdorf The Growler

@TheGrowlerBC

It’s a situation Dageraad Brewing owner Ben Coli had never been in before, and one he hopes he’ll never be in again. A few weeks ago, Coli discovered the new warm room the brewery had built wasn’t really doing its job. The room was designed to keep bottled beer at a specific temperature for months on end, allowing it to naturally carbonate – a process called “bottle conditioning.” However, it turned out that since the room was so tall, air wasn’t circulating the way it was supposed to. Hot air became trapped at the top of the room, and spoiled all of the beer stored on the upper shelves. And we’re talking a lot of beer here. As a result, Dageraad’s entire 2017 batch of 10º, as well as hundreds of litres of Londen and Burnabarian, all had to be thrown out. “It got up to 12 degrees warmer at the top than it was at the bottom [of the room],” Coli tells me. “All the beer near the top of the warm room basically got cooked, which unfortunately included our slowest, most expensive beer of the year.” Now, I’ve had to pour out

a spoiled batch of homebrew before, and let me tell you, it sucks to see something you spent hours creating circle the drain. I can’t even imagine how gross Coli must have felt to destroy literally thousands of litres of his beer, and 10º too, one of Dageraad’s best and most expensive beers to produce. It goes without saying that losing this beer was major blow to Dageraad’s bottom line. The brewery is right in the middle of renovating their tasting room, too (due to finally open in April!), so the timing couldn’t have been worse. But out of all of this shittiness, something kind of awesome happened. Not long after Coli posted about the mishap on social media, Dageraad soon found itself on the receiving end of a veritable tsunami of love. In addition to countless messages of support, close to a dozen other breweries – Dageraad’s competitors – reached out to Coli to ask if there was anything they could do to help. A number of bars and pubs – again, some of which were owned by Dageraad’s competitors – offered Coli tap lines and new business to help Dageraad stay afloat. Chilliwack Hop Farms offered up free hops should Dageraad want to re-brew the beer it lost and the company that does Dageraad’s labels also offered a discount.

“It’s pretty overwhelming, all the love we’ve been receiving,” says Coli. I think the response is a great example of the culture of cooperation and support that exists within the BC craft beer scene. Far from being cutthroat competitors, BC breweries routinely collaborate with each other to produce one-off beers and share best practices. There’s an understanding that, by helping each other make the best beer possible, everyone wins. Especially the beerdrinking public! I think it also speaks volumes about the character of those working in the craft beer industry. Brewers, by and large, are decent, hard-working people, and more often than not, they are motivated by a genuine love of beer, as opposed to the allure of a quick buck. They understand that they, too, could suffer a similar misfortune someday. “We are truly fortunate to be members of such a close community, both with our drinkers and with our colleagues at beer stores, bars and other breweries,” Dageraad posted on its Facebook page in response. “And although we lost a bunch of money, we’re not ready to pack it in and go out of business. Dageraad will carry on.” So, grab a bottle and help out some good people making great beer. W

FASHION

Swedish fashion brand COS arrives in Vancouver Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor

From IKEA to Bang & Olufsen, we can’t get enough of the Scandi aesthetic. Now, another name enters the fray: COS, which opens its first Vancouver store at 18 Water Street in Gastown soon. The 10-year-old Swedish-born, London-based brand is named for the acronym ‘Collection of Style’ and is part of the H&M family. But, unlike H&M and other runwaytrend-led high-street stores, COS is designed to be timeless. It’s expensive-looking, but surprisingly affordable (ranging from $19 for a top to $450 for outerwear). How does the brand define its aesthetic? “It has drawn inspiration from the

art and design world since its inception, and our collections often start with a spark of inspiration from a particular painting,” explains Karin Gustafsson, the brand’s Creative Director. “We also find inspiration in the world around us, from street style to local architecture. By distilling these influences, we endeavour to design garments that are timeless; pieces that can be worn season after season, rather than dictated by trends.” The current Spring/Summer 2017 collection has an unusual inspiration: Parachutes. That doesn’t mean puffy meringues, though there are some beautifully voluminous pieces. It’s more about draping and folding. “It’s been influenced by the juxtaposition of romance and utility,” says Gustafsson. “For women, it’s a palette of

feminine and nature-inspired colours, contrasting with utilitarian silhouettes. For men, simplicity and effortlessness are integral to the variety of the collection.” We know we’ll be first in

line at the store, but who has Gustafsson defined as the target audience? “When thinking of the COS woman/man, we think of a group of friends who share the same likes and aes-

thetics but with their own discerning take on fashion,” she says. “This group shares busy lifestyles and is interested in current issues, from cultural, to political and fashion. They tend to

be confident, style conscious and have a big-city mindset. They appreciate exceptional quality and value in every element of their lives.” Sounds like a perfect match for Vancouver. W

SIX PERFECT LOOKS FROM SPRING/SUMMER 1. It’s simple, but the origami-like detail keeps things interesting. Cotton linen boat-neck Tshirt, cotton linen apron skirt with folded detail, gold-plated amorphic earring and leather sneakers with elastic fastening.

4. This skirt with sculptural waistband is a must-buy. Knitted sleeveless top with raised neck, cotton pencil skirt with folded wrap waist and leather sneakers with elastic fastening.

2. Layered, with a Japanese feel thanks to the kimono style blazer. Cotton poplin layered blazer, long-sleeved sweater with raised neck, Milano knit wrap pants and leather sneakers with elastic fastening.

5. The parka offers a more literal interpretation of the parachute theme. Oversized transparent parachute parka, viscose knit jumper with elongated sleeves, cotton skirt with draped pocket detail and leather sneakers with elastic fastening.

3. The embossed geometric pattern livens up a simple sheath dress. Milano knit dress with embossed graphic pattern, rubberised leather folded bag and rubber-sole sandals with elastic fastening.

6. The layered detail gives it edge, while the simple silhouette and terracotta hue keeps it wearable. Technical knit dress with layered graphic detail and leather sneakers with elastic fastening.

BC Home + Garden Show must-see features Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK

Every year, Vancouver welcomes a variety of design shows, and the BC Home + Garden Show has long been one of the city’s top attractions, offering international celebrity speakers, creative exhibits and useful tips for stylish living on a budget. This year I feel like the show has set the stage to offer the most unique event for show-goers yet. Looking at the lineup, it’s all about maximizing what you have and creating the most efficient living space possible within your home. There are a number of highlights in particular

that I’ll be queuing up to see, from fellow designers and expert speakers to the various show homes that have been designed to spark our creativity. Perhaps my most anticipated feature of this year’s show, though, is the HONOMOBO Container Laneway Home. As a homeowner, juggling what laneway housing options we have available, I am beyond excited to see that HONOMOBO has changed up the game and brought a whole new playing field to Vancouverites looking to create small space living in their backyards. In complete contrast to traditional design and builds for laneway houses, HONOMOBO uses shipping containers to create efficient, modular and moveable dwellings that are high on style. They also

HONOMOBO, which specializes in container laneway houses, makes its debut appearance at the show this year. Contributed photo appeal to those with time constraints, shifting the typical construction process from months to weeks. Revolutionizing the

concept of simple living, HONOMOBO has teamed up with Kendall Ansell Interiors to showcase the beauty in simplicity of small

space living. “Small space design is something we specialize in and are so familiar with given the current market trends in Greater Vancouver,” explains Kendall, principal and founder of Kendall Ansell Interiors. “We love how beautiful, modern, and seamless the HONOMOBO design is, and we are proud to be interior-designing this container home. This project really allowed us to integrate our design philosophy of considering substance and lifestyle at the forefront of the design process, and showing off that even the smallest spaces can be both stylish and functional” Other show features that are on my must-see list begin with the celebrity guest speakers hitting the Main Stage (which happens to

be furnished by one of my favourite stops for fab finds, The Living Lab). While the show welcomes home regular attractions like Bryan Baeumler, Carson Arthur and Mike Holmes Jr., I feel like there is a fresh energy with the inclusion of international design darling,Tiffany Pratt, who is set to share the importance of colour in design with her Vancouver audience. I’m also looking forward to the BC Hydro Smart House, where local star Jamie Banfield is designing the ultimate in stylish, energy-efficient living. BEST TALK RADIO BEST RADIO PERSONALITY

Happy Best of the City birthday! Technically, every year is our birthday, but this year, our annual readers’ choice awards turns the big 2-0. It’s a special thing to be able to open up our library and look back on how much the city has changed in the past two decades. Back when it was still called Best in the West, the Roxy had yet to be crushed by Tinder for best place to pick up, meanwhile “Other Asian” was an acceptable, all-encompassing category for everything but Chinese and Thai food. In the intervening years, we’ve split the poll into Best of the City and Best of the City: Dining, to acknowledge how far our culinary scene has come, while expanding the regular BOTC list to represent a true portrait of city life (yes, yes, we know... there are a lot of categories). Thank you to everyone who voted – your thoughtful, sometimes sassy answers are truly one of the highlights of our year. And, to the person who entered Kingsgate Mall into virtually every category, it was surprising how often it made sense.

MICHAEL WHITE @bequietmichael

When radio mainstay Martin Strong – whose more than 20 years on air include long-term spells at CBC and Rock 101 – was approached by nonemore-veteran broadcasting visionary Don Shafer in 2015 about joining a new, independent, hyper-local talk station, his trepidation about the concept was overruled by his faith in Shafer. “‘If Don Shafer thinks this can work,’” he remembers thinking, “‘then I’m onboard.’” Strong’s confidence appears to have been well placed. Roundhouse Radio, whose only appearance in last year’s Best of the City poll was an impressive but isolated Silver for Best Local Radio Station, this year took Gold in the newly launched Best Local Talk Radio category and made a

clean sweep of Best Local Radio Personality: Martin Strong (Mornings, Gold), Cory Price (Live from Railtown, Silver) and Emelia Symington Fedy (Trying to Be Good, Bronze). Little more than a year after its launch, the station has established itself as a stillevolving but crucial outlier among the city’s terrestrial and online radio options. “This is probably the only city in the world where I’ve ever felt at home,” says Shafer, Roundhouse’s CEO and general manager, whose 50-plus years in the industry have taken him around the country, including stops at Toronto powerhouses CHUM FM and Q107.When Canada’s licencing body, the CRTC, made a new spot available on the FM dial, he says, “I thought I had the perfect idea, which is a station that’s all about the city.”

Dialled in

The catalyst was a report from the Vancouver Foundation that said, he recalls, “that the city was disconnected and people weren’t talking to each other.” His solution was a station that devotes itself largely to facilitating communication between the diverse people and goingson that are otherwise being overlooked by local radio, if not all media. “The idea of being local is not new,” Shafer admits. “I’d love to take credit for the idea, but it’s really an old-fashioned idea of what radio did [when it was new] – or even television. The city of Vancouver is almost one million people – bigger than a lot of Canadian cities – and yet all radio stations in town, except maybe Co-op, are less than 30 per cent local. Over 70 per cent of Roundhouse’s content is local. It’s all about community, it’s all

about art, politics, what’s going on in the street.” “Roundhouse is more like stations in the old days,” Strong concurs. “It’s a family-owned company, as opposed to these media giants that own four radio stations and two TV stations in one town. It’s a lot more organic and it’s a lot more fun. There’s so much interesting stuff that goes on here – the little microcosms of the city – and we get to explore them in all the different parts of town.” This means a programming roster that includes the likes of Price’s Live from Railtown, an in-performance showcase of local music; Terry David Mulligan’s food-and-drink-focused Tasting Room; and Kirk LaPointe’s Evenings, which, like Strong’s Mornings counterpart, spans the gamut of arts, politics, sports and everything else

under the sun, usually including interviews with known and unknown Vancouverites seeking to make their mark. “We want to be Vancouver’s voice, not just us talking,” says Strong. “There are so many people who have come through our doors as guests and to contribute in some way. I’ve met so many interesting people – I’ve met more interesting people in the past year than I did in the previous 10.” “Our team has worked so far to find our place in the city, to find our sound, to reach out. It’s overwhelming to see the results,” adds Shafer. “We’re still in the process of proving ourselves. The Best of the City results is, frankly, inspirational. It says the patient is alive!” W

Community centre: Antisocial defies its name GREGORY ADAMS @greogoryadamsbc

Best 20th annual

Mount Pleasant mainstay Antisocial Skateboard Shop’s side wall is plastered in about-to-beabused decks, and its back partition with a variety of Vans sneakers. Glass cases in the middle of the woodand-concrete storefront hold pristine trucks that will eventually be grinding hard across city curbs and hand railings. But that’s really only part of what makes the 15-year old business a community favourite. Whether it’s hosting jam-packed punk shows after business hours, or mounting a local photographer’s debut show in the back gallery, Antisocial’s cultural appeal extends beyond a kickflipping clientele. “I don’t understand the concept of having a store where you just open and close every day,” owner/ founder Michelle Pezel explains of her multifaceted approach to running the

City of the

2017

DERS’ CHOICE REA

BEST SKATE SHOP

Antisocial co-owner Michelle Pezel prides her shop on offering more than just a retail environment. Dan Toulgoet photo

business. “To have none of that extra-curricular – art shows, music shows, community events – would be wild. I’m always trying to figure out a way to have something else going on.” As a retailer, Antisocial

is supplying pavement riders with anything from Shoe Goo to Spitfire wheels. The in-house line of understated, bold-typeface Antisocial T-shirts has become ubiquitous across all terrain. “We sell

a lot of our own Antisocial stuff when we have it in stock – that’s what people want,” says Penzel, adding that the company also markets house-branded hoodies and boards. Currently, you can pick up a

Chocolate Skateboardsmade deck sporting a watercolour painting of the storefront in shades of mauve and aquamarine. To celebrate the store’s 15th anniversary, the coming months will see

the release of a co-release sneaker with Vans. A photo book celebrating the roster of Antisocial team riders, past concerts and more could come out by the holiday season. Penzel notes that people who first came into the shop in the early ’00s are now starting to bring in their own kids to buy their first board. Nobly, the shop gives back to the community by hosting fundraisers for local organizations like the femaleskateboarder-connecting Chickflip, or holding record-release parties for the likes of sludge-metal band Haggatha. Despite the withdrawn business name, it’s an all-welcoming environment. “If we can make the skaters stoked, and all the other people stoked, than we’re doing something OK.” W

Bird on a Wire Creations owner Kate Nagel in her Main Street gift shop. Dan Toulgoet photo

A Bird in the hand

KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

When Kate Nagel found herself out of work and on EI, she decided to make the most of her newfound time. “I had been laid off as an executive assistant and I had been doing crafting with some friends, and I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to open a store that supports ‘Shop local, buy local’ and our crafters.” Nagel says she was hesitant to dive in at first and shelved the idea for a few months. In applying for an EI-sponsored entrepreneurial course at Langara, however, she developed a business plan for the store, which won the support of

Vancity. In 2010, Bird on a Wire Creations was born. Stocked with wares from dozens of local artisans, there’s something for every occasion at the Best of the City-winning gift shop on Main Street. More importantly, Nagel’s 100-mile philosophy has created a support network for artists across the community. “My bottom line, my personal mandate, is to shift the paradigm from starving artist to thriving artist,” Nagel says. “I feel that I’ve been called to be an advocate, a champion for artists. I felt a very strong calling in 2009 to do that, and I said yes.” Which means most of what you’ll find at Bird on a Wire is handmade and one

of a kind. And, in addition to cards, clothing, jewelry, home decor, accessories and last-minute flowers, the shop also offers affordable needle-felting classes for all ages. “The reason I opened the store is many-faceted, but I wanted to bring that sense of community. When people walk in, we see people,” Nagel says, passionately. “And we want to share stories and build relationships instead of making a sale. “I wanted to have a place where people knew that they mattered.” W

Vancity banks on doing the right thing MICHAEL WHITE @bequietmichael

Best 20th annual

City of the

Historically, personal banking hasn’t been a subject with which to stir the passions of the masses. But, at a time when most of us are increasingly anxious about the tenuous security of our assets (especially in a part of the world where the chasm between breathtaking wealth and bareknuckle survival is in full view almost everywhere), and the mere choice of where we park our savings has become a political act, Vancity is capturing a fastgrowing number of people’s votes – figuratively and, in terms of this year’s Best of the City poll, literally. It was the runaway Gold winner in the Best Local Bank/Credit Union Category, and took Silver for Best Company to Work For. Tamara Vrooman, president and CEO of Vancity, has a great deal to do with this. When she arrived at the community credit union (Canada’s largest) in 2007, it was already in more than good standing, but she has doubled its value in the ensuing decade, to $24 billion, all while overseeing the launch of many initiatives that run counter to the received wisdom of the financial industry.

“The question I asked myself, and ended up asking our staff, is, ‘In what ways can we think not only about what we do with the money we earn, but how we earn it in the first place?’” she says. “What’s been interesting over this journey has been that the bolder we are about what makes us different, the better we actually do. We’ve had record years of profitability, record years of membership growth. We’ve been growing by over 30,000 members each year for the past four years, which is larger than most credit unions, full stop.” Vancity’s growth, to more than half a million ownermembers, has happened as a result of its mission to be ethical in everything it does, from investing in myriad environmental and socially conscious initiatives, to finding fiscally respon-

sible ways of helping young people establish credit. “What people are observing is that inequality is inefficient by almost any measure,” says Vrooman. “People experience that personally, but I think they also see it evidenced in their community. “Millennials are telling us what makes us cool is not our technology and all of the things many people associate with that [demographic]; it’s our values. And frankly, our older members have always known that: Doing the right thing for people, in a socially and environmentally sustainable way, is not only not anathema to a strong business. It’s essential to it.” W

You could be a uni student belting out modern pop bangers by Beyoncé and Bieber, or a veteran with a penchant for Elvis, but one thing’s for certain at the Army Navy & AirforceVeterans Canteen’s twice-weekly karaoke night: Everyone gets a chance to shine. Longtime host Ron Cahill explains thatWednesdays and Saturdays have become a prime opportunity for people of all ages to show off their pipes, even if your go-to cut is a little risqué. “The kids sing some weird tunes these days. Some of them, especially on aWednesday night, have profanities in them,” he says, with a laugh. “The older ones, I don’t know whether they don’t hear the profanities or whether they just let it slide. The kids get away with everything here, as long as they show respect.” Though technically a members club with a clientele of veterans as old as 90-something, the younger crowd are encouraged to

Meanwhile, the breadth of songs you’ll hear pulsing through the main room’s PA is only getting wider. “Some of them sing show tunes, which we never used to get. When we first started, it was all Elvis and Beatles – stuff that people know really well. Now it can be anything.” Time was Cahill would

2017

DERS’ CHOICE REA

BEST THEATRE COMPANY

SABRINA FURMINGER @sabrinarmf

When Bill Millerd joined Arts ClubTheatre Company, in 1972, the organization was nine years old and producing four shows each year in a converted gospel hall on Seymour Street. It had an annual budget of $100,000; its single venue sat 150 people. Forty-five years later, Arts Club is Canada’s largest not-for-profit urban theatre company, with a budget of $14 million, three venues (Granville Island Stage, Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, and the Goldcorp Stage at BMOTheatre Centre), 18 shows per year, and a robust touring arm. And after all those years at the helm, the 2017-’18 season will be Millerd’s last as artistic managing director. Millerd is especially proud of the new works that have premiered on

Arts Club artistic managing director Bill Millerd will step down at the end of next season. Contributed photo

Arts Club stages during his tenure, including Sherman Snukal’s Talking Dirty; the various incarnations of Mom’s theWord; last year’s juggernaut musical hit Onegin, from Veda Hille and Amiel Gladstone; and, most recently, Anosh Irani’s The Men inWhite (on now until March 11). “We’ve done slightly over 100 premieres, and I think every one of those, good or bad, are proud moments,” says Millerd, who directed more than 100 plays during his tenure. Millerd’s final season will reinforce this commitment to new Canadian work with three new plays: Thanks for Giving, by Governor General’s Award–winning playwright Kevin Loring; Forget

About Tomorrow, by Jill Daum; and Me andYou, by Melody Anderson. Also on the schedule: The Humans, Mamma Mia!, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, King Charles III, Jitters, and the gripping conclusion to Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Part Two: Perestroika. The search for the next Millerd begins immediately. Does he have any advice for his successor? “You have to trust your instincts,” he says, after a pause. “Of course there are always compromises to be made [...] but I think you need to be aware of what you want to see on the stage.” W

Aritzia weathers the trends

AILEEN LALOR @AileenLalor

People talk a lot about “the Vancouver uniform” (read: yoga pants), but the one item we see multiple times a day – whatever the occasion or weather – is a little more elegant: Aritzia’s Mosaic blanket scarf. It’s made from Australian wool, but is as Vancouver-y as kale, ennui, bitching about the property market, or Aritzia itself, which is Best of the City winner in the Best Women’s Clothing and Best Warehouse Sale categories. Brian Hill (his father is the “Hill” in Hill’s of Kerrisdale) opened Aritzia’s first store in 1984, aiming to “offer beautiful clothes in aspirational spaces with exceptional service,” says chief marketing officer Oliver Walsh. More than 30 years on, the aim hasn’t changed. But that one little boutique is now a network of 75 stores across North America, with international shipping through Aritzia.com. What’s the secret to its success? Its diverse range of brands, from TNA to Wilfred, each of which is distinct

Walsh says it’s also about attention to detail. “We sweat the small stuff. It’s why we search out the best mills and factories around the world,” he says. “It’s why we consider – and reconsider – every last seam, pleat and button. It’s why our clothes look and feel so good.”

The Aritzia shopping bag is almost as ubiquitous as the scarf – never more so than at the annual warehouse sale in September, which last year lured around 50,000 local shoppers, attracted by discounts of up to 90 per cent. Walsh says there are no particular plans for expansion right now, either geographically or into other areas, such as menswear, but he believes Aritzia will

continue to buck the trend of the dying high street. “I think now, more than ever, you only hear about the decline of retail, not only in Canada but globally. We’re fortunate enough to be growing our business, especially in a discerning fashion landscape.” W

WINNERS Van Yperen Jewellers chases the art Cobie Smulders: Canada’s avenger SABRINA FURMINGER @Sabrinarmf

SABRINA FURMINGER @Sabrinarmf

Best 20th annual

Stepping into Van Yperen Jewellers on West 10th Avenue is like delving into the busy but orderly mind of an eternally inspired artist. All manner of jewelry and objects d’art populate the shop, while artisans can be spied hand-forging pieces to life behind a large glass window panel. It’s been this way for 50 years, since Willy Van Yperen – a jewelry designer who headlined two solo shows at the Vancouver Art Gallery – established Van Yperen Jewellers to serve the needs of Vancouverites seeking one-ofa-kind pieces that stand the test of time. “Here, we really chase the art,” says current owner Rob Van Yperen, Willy’s son. Inspiration for jewelry is everywhere, according to Van Yperen: in nature, on the roads – even in displays at hardware stores. “That’s me, and my dad was the same thing. I don’t know if I could do it another way.” One quality that VanYperen says sets his store apart, is its firm stance on what it means to be one-of-a-kind. “When

Even if I make another ring that’s supposed to be the same, like an award ring, on purpose I do not keep track of dimensions or anything like that,” says VanYperen. This is especially poignant in the case of wedding bands. “To me, having been married for 40 years, I think, ‘If you’re going to get married and you’re going to commit and you’re going to build a life together, why not build something that nobody else has?’”

Many of Van Yperen’s customers ask him to dismantle cherished heirloom jewelry and reassemble it into something new and equally meaningful. “I’ve built a lot of things in my career, and I think I can safely say, ‘Something I’ve made will last a thousand years,’” says Van Yperen. “What a job I’ve got!” W

Long before she was saving the world with Nick Fury or helping Ted meet the mother of his kids, Cobie Smulders was just another talented Vancouver kid attending Lord Byng High School (and hanging out at the mall, probably). As Robin Scherbatsky, the Canadian-born news anchor on the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Smulders was the embodiment of Canuck stereotypes: She loved Neil Young, Scotch, donuts, apologizing, and the metric system, and she had a secret past as a teen pop star. As Scherbatsky defended herself against her friends’ mockery of Canadian Thanksgiving and the colour of our money, Smulders secured her place as one of Canada’s favourite (with a ‘u’!) avengers. Born Jacoba Francisca Maria Smulders, in Vancouver in 1982, Smulders worked as a model before diving into acting full-time. Her early roles were on locally shot series, including Jeremiah and The L-Word. Besides her fan-favourite role on How I MetYour Mother, she is world-famous for her

BEST CONSTRUCTION/ RENOVATION CONTRACTOR

Work by Refine & Design Custom Homes and Renovations. Contributed photo

Finding Refine-ment in renovation chaos JENNIFER SCOTT @Jennifer_AGCTK

Big or small, renovations are stressful. As a designer, I am inherently aware of the importance of finding a team that I can align with when it comes to renovations or custom builds, and the same goes for homeowners looking to tackle a new project. It’s not just a matter of finding someone you trust to stay on budget and meet the expectations you’ve set out before the work begins – working with the right team means collaborating with a reputable builder or contractor on the overall project vision, and connecting with those that harmonize with your communication style and values. For the third year in a row, Refine & Design Custom Homes and Renovations has taken top spot in Westender’s Best of the City

awards. “Winning Best in City three years in a row means so much to myself and the whole Refine & Design team,” says owner/ operator Sam Wainwright. “Our integrity and reputation for being good people and doing good work in the construction industry – where so many problems can occur everyday – means the world to [us].” The company’s story begins over a decade ago, with a reputation for creating unique lofts and living spaces. Since the company’s inception, though, their portfolio has grown to include more traditional projects, as well as full home renovations and custom new builds. Refine & Design has also expanded into commercial design, responsible for the stunning aesthetics of some of the city’s top nightclubs, restaurants and even sound studios.

Not one to hog the spotlight, Wainwright credits much of his company’s success to surrounding it with the right tradespeople. “The secret to our success is based on choices. We choose to work with quality tradespeople who have a proven eye for detail. They are tried and tested in not only their ability to perform their work at the highest level, but also in their ability to relate to the caliber of clientele we attract.” When asked what his favourite part of the job is, Wainwright says: “Being creative, overcoming challenges and never saying ‘This is not possible’”. After all, exceeding expectations is the new meeting expectations. W

Natasha Cuzner didn’t have dreams of helping to make women beautiful when she was a kid. “I was interested in beauty, but I really wanted to be a scientist and ended up getting my associates degree in science, with a view to becoming a midwife,” she explains. “While I was studying, I became more interested in aesthetics and how you could apply science to beauty. Everyone was telling people what products to use, but I wanted to know what would work on a cellular level.” The Vancouverite went on to enter a medical aesthetics programme in which most of her classmates were doctors. When she completed that and started work, she realized no one was offering the particular blend of science and pampering she envisaged. “There were doctors whose procedures cost upwards of $3,000, or dodgy joints that weren’t especially clean offering treatments that didn’t give results,” she says. She wanted to provide something in the middle – with a fun, relaxed atmosphere, too. That was three and a half years ago. Now, Cuzner’s

On the menu: Everything from its Best of the City award-winning facials, to its Best of the City awardwinning Botox (carried out by doctors) and lasers. Cuzner says that for instant gratification, injectables like Botox and fillers are great, but people also get the wow factor from fractional laser resurfacing. “Clients do experience downtime,” she says, “but we now offer a post-procedural cream and makeup to conceal, so they don’t need to have the procedure done on a Friday and recover over the weekend.”

Her best piece of advice for those who want to improve their skin is to stop wasting money on products that don’t work. “You can’t buy the most effective products on the high street. We sell only clinicalgrade skincare with high percentages of active ingredients,” she says. She also advises talking to an aesthetician and coming up with a plan that integrates the products with aesthetic procedures. And what do most mature women with great skin have in common? “They all use retinol and they apply sunscreen every day, even when it’s cloudy.” W

Milk: It does the city good

KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

It’s fun to be your own client. That’s the sentiment expressed byVancouver public relations veteran Shannon Heth. After years of growth, Heth recently made the difficult decision to rebrand her eponymous lifestyle PR company, Heth PR, to a new, more inclusive name: Milk Creative Communications. In doing so, the company president allowed herself to engage in a branding exercise that not only got the word out about the shift, but engaged a city hungry for clever, cosmopolitan ideas. Playing off the name, she and her team – Colin Rose, Holly Lambert, Ryan Molag, Jenn Munroe, Anna McDonald, Nicola Humphrey and Hannah Prince – launched the Crunchtime Cereal Bar, a colourful, two-day pop-up breakfast bar featuring familiar and exotic cereals from around the world. With visitors paying $5 a bowl, the September initiative raised just under $1,800 for charity, allowed Milk to flex its creative muscle, and left food-obsessedVancouverites buzzing. Milk followed that success up with another food-themed

event: February’s smash-hit Edible Museum. This time, to promote Milk’s stable of Canadian wines, Heth and co. retained museum experts, local event producers and professional food designers to create a one-day museum of Canadian cuisine, featuring samples of wine alongside patriotic infographics, a “deconstructed” poutine display, a classic Quebecois sugar shack, a McIntosh apple wall (it’s the national apple of Canada), and food from local restaurants and chefs. The time slots sold out. When reached by phone to discuss Milk’s Best of the City win for Best PR Company, Heth was in full Vancouver International Wine Festival mode (her company also handles PR for that behemoth). She had time, though, to chat about her thoughts on activating Vancouver’s imagination. What’s the thought process to go from, “We want to promote our client’s wines” to “Let’s launch an edible museum”? Heth: Ha. Right? Constellation Brands is an interesting client for us, because they always look to us for creative solutions. When they came to us in the summer of last

year, talking about Canada’s 150th and a lot of their [wine] brands being Canadian, they said, “We want a really big idea to get people talking about these brands in advance of the [wine festival],” and something that’s not just geared towards wine people. Immediately we started thinking, okay, what do people love in this market, how can we think about how the Vancouver market works, and what do we think will resonate with people? I’d seen the Museum of Ice Cream in NewYork, and we had done some work with [copresenter] HereThereYVR before [...] and so we felt he would be a really great partner for something creative. With a boom in interesting local businesses and entrepreneurs, is PR booming as result? I feel like PR is changing so much. We’re no longer just the people who “make you famous,” quote unquote. [Laughs] We have to be so much more strategic about content development and assets and, I think, with the changes that are happening in PR and in other bigger cities like NewYork and LA, they’re becoming more holistic agen-

Dan Toulgoet photo cies. The agencies that are doing well, and where I hope we sort of fit, are the agencies that are starting to offer content management, photography, micro-sites. It’s not enough now, if you’re working with bigger clients, to just do traditional media relations. When you say you were thinking about what people love in this market, what do Vancouverites love?

I think, obviously, anything food-related always goes over well. But, at the same time, we didn’t want to just do another wine tasting. And I think that there have been some really interesting activations that have come to the city lately – the Hermès exhibition was really smart, and the Muji pop-up that’s happening right now. I think that this city is hungry for stuff like that. And because these larger luxury brands are

taking notice ofVancouver, I think that they see an appetite for this international, global thinking. And so I feel like it’s still a young enough city that when you bring these big ideas here, people get really excited. I think that if you bring something different, people will come. W

Tennis find inspiration at sea (again) MICHAEL WHITE @westendervan

No one could have known from listening to it, but the title of Tennis’s previous long-player, 2014’s Ritual in Repeat, was rather loaded. The result of the Denver, Colorado, band’s first workto-order songwriting sessions, it was also their third album – a stage at which the rote promotional and touring duties of a band lucky enough to reach such a milestone often become a millstone. “It was kind of a joyless process, where we had to discover the monotony of the routine of showing up to make music that day, and we work until the end of the day, and then we stop,” recalls singer/keyboardist and – alongside husband Patrick Riley – Tennis co-founder Alaina Moore. “Probably every songwriter has gone through this, and it was important that we had that experience. I think a lot of it came from the fact that I wanted to write better songs – I wanted to move forward, but I didn’t know what the next step was. I wanted the joy of discovery and expression. Not necessarily ease – I don’t expect it to be easy anymore, and it never is – but I wanted those things back, because that’s what makes it worth doing.” So, she and Riley returned to the scene that had been the inspiration for their widely acclaimed debut album, Cape Dory: international waters. Despite being of very limited means (when they married, Riley cut

Tennis’s Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore. Luca Venter photo Moore’s hair for the ceremony because she couldn’t afford to go to a salon), the newlywed couple procured a small sailboat, which they took out for an extended sojourn along the Eastern Seaboard. Returning to life on land, the seeds of a record had been sown. Fast-forward six-plus years, and the Tennis linchpins were once again upon the ocean’s isolated and isolating void, hoping inspiration would strike. Fortunately, it did. “The world feels very unreal; it recedes with the shoreline and it’s gone,” Moore says of life at sea. “It’s just your own mind out there, and it allowed me to write about whatever I wanted and not worry about

it anymore.” The result is Yours Conditionally (out Mar. 10), another triumphant addition to a near-flawless discography of classic pop melodies often matched with slyly subversive lyrics from the fount of Moore’s tirelessly inquisitive mind. A former philosophy major, she likes to think of her words as a “bonus layer” that shouldn’t distract a listener, but are waiting to be discovered by those who want to find them. The new album finds them biting slightly harder than before, in the caustic humour of “Ladies Don’t Play Guitar” and the blurred gender perspective of “Baby Don’t Believe.” These are the result of a drive to do away

with the ambiguities of previous albums that led to Tennis being dismissed by less attentive listeners as a lightweight endeavour, indebted to the surface pleasures of the 1960s girl-group sound without adding anything new to the art form.

“I’m inspired by that type of songwriting,” Moore concedes. “The lyrics are so simplistic because they have to serve the melody; they sound so good when you sing a held note. There’s a lot of utility behind why those songs became popular. But I

don’t have that relationship to romance: I’m a feminist, I live in a different century. Even my feelings of love, they’re framed by a superegalitarian, monogamous, long-term partnership. It’s not like this swirling, explosive, emotional connection; it’s practice, it’s devotion, it’s discipline. So, when I was writing these songs, I was like, ‘How do I stay true to my own experience of life and the world and my own views, but I’m still making the kind of music I love the most and I want to make?’ “But there’s also no need to be derivative and continue to describe the same sentiments in another pop song, because we’ve already had the best ones ever,” she continues, chuckling goodnaturedly. “I’m not gonna write [the Shirelles’] ‘Baby It’s You,’ so why even try to do that? I have to set some kind of bar for myself.” W " )<UU4P S1]. O6< &41OVTQ< #]Y]Q<O TU $<>U<P>].L F]QN \ ]O 5SVN )4@2<OP ]O O4@2<O0<YN@]N

Pemberton Music Festival announces dates, early-bird prices GREGORY ADAMS @westender

You don’t have to take the tent out of storage just yet, but music and camping are in the cards for BC concertgoers again this year. Promoters behind the much-loved, multi-genre Pemberton Music Festival confirmed this morning (Feb. 21) that the eclectic event will be returning for its fourth consecutive summer. To say the least, it’s time to get excited. “For the last four years, the community of Pemberton has opened their arms to help us welcome fans far and wide to experience an incredible musical event in the best place on Earth,” Huka Entertainment Chairman and CEO AJ Niland said in a statement of the festival’s return. While acts have yet to be announced, the fest runs July

13 to 16. If you’re willing to trust organizers’ tastes, earlybird tickets go on sale this Thursday (Feb. 23) at a starting price of $299.You can also tack on a camping option to your four-day ticket, but if your idea of fun doesn’t include waking up with your partner in a stench-heavy pup tent for one, you can also consider booking a room in nearby Whistler. A shuttle service is being offered from the ski town, too. Whether you’re a fan of 90s rock, contemporary rap anthems, or a follower of deep, expressive dance music, Pemberton Music Festival is set on pleasing everyone. Last year alone, the crowd of over 180,000 people was treated to over 100 acts. Spread out across several stages – in front of majestic Mt. Currie, no less – the summer fest has hosted anyone from legacy alt-rock

acts like Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails, to one heck of an all-day dance party at its electronic music stage. It’s twice boasted rapper Kendrick Lamar, while a crosssection of previous top-shelf talent includes Frank Ocean, Modest Mouse, Missy Elliot, Deadmau5, Weezer, the Chainsmokers, and more. On a local front, the fest has also offered slots to BC-bred bands like the Zolas. If you’re looking for more than music, keep in mind that there’s also a comedy contingent to the Pemberton Music Festival each year, which has hosted classic stoner duo Cheech & Chong and ‘00s weirdoes Tim & Eric. Make art, not hate Filmmaker Kyra Zagorsky’s confronts Islamophobia in new short, The Prince Sabrina Furminger Reel People @Sabrinarmf

There’s no one right way to process a traumatic event. Some people do everything they can to forget about it. Others strive to integrate it into their lives somehow, to acknowledge that it happened but not let it define who they are. And others still take that traumatic event, expose it to the light, and rip it apart in order to inspire change and introspection in others. An example of the last is The Prince, a startling and timely short film written and directed by veteran stage and screen actress Kyra Zagorsky (Helix, Continuum) that premieres this weekend as part of the 18th annual Crazy8s film competition. In The Prince, a young tap dancer (portrayed by Ashé

Sabongui, Zagorsky’s 11-yearold daughter) and her Uncle Amir (Lee Majdoub) struggle with what it means to be Middle Eastern-Canadian following a violent confrontation on public transit. The Prince is inspired by a similar incident involving Zagorsky, her husband, Montreal-born actor Patrick Sabongui (an actor on Homeland and The Flash, and co-producer on The Prince), their two young children, and an Islamophobic stranger on the SkyTrain in 2009. “Patrick was holding the stroller, and I was sitting down, and this guy just started cussing me out for bringing terrorist babies into the world,” says Zagorsky, who was born in New York. “It was disgusting. Nobody did anything. People just stared, and that [reaction] was something that was just fascinating to me.” The family disembarked from the train to escape the verbal attack, but the experience was not easily shaken. That’s not to say that The Prince is a direct dramatization of that SkyTrain incident. Zagorsky wove

together elements of various racist incidents that have befallen her family and friends, as well as realities (like racial profiling in air travel and showbiz) that they and others face on a daily basis. The goal is twofold, says Zagorsky: to inspire selfreflection in perpetrators and bystanders of Islamophobia, and to remind people “who are feeling like Amir and his family that they’re not alone.” Like Zagorsky, the characters in The Prince are artists responding to Islamophobia through artistic practice. Ashé Sabongui’s character interprets her family’s experience through dance, while her uncle struggles with a life-changing decision involving his acting career. “This is really about this young girl who, as an artist, as a dancer, says early on, ‘I’m going to represent my culture in a beautiful way and make people see us, and I’m going to do it through love and light,’” says Zagorsky. “For this young man, although he’s a grown man, he’s just been putting up with things for a while, and he then has to make a decision about his responsibility as an artist,

for what they are or are not willing to do, but I feel like, shouldn’t we care about what we’re putting out there?” The Prince also features Zagorsky’s nine-year-old son, Bodhi, Jennifer Copping, Brendan Taylor, and J. Alex Brinson, as well as a culturally diverse crew – a fact that makes Zagorsky particularly proud. “I haven’t seen a lot of that in Vancouver,” she says. The Prince was one of six films produced as part of the 2017 edition of Crazy8s, in which hundreds of filmmakers competed for the opportunity to shoot, edit, and picture-lock their film in eight days with financial and production support, and premiere their films at a gala. Besides The Prince, this

year’s Crazy8s films include Anh Hung, a family drama set in East Vancouver; Cypher, inspired by the 1992 LA riots; No Reservations, a satirical comedy about pipeline development; The Undertaker’s Son, a drama about death and relationships set in a 1860s Western town; and TheWoodman, in which a lonely man made of wood seeks connection online. Ask Mish: reunite with my ex, or stick with my toy boy? Adopteez’ Pet of the Week: Weslee While epilepsy can be daunting, Weslee’s disorder is easily managed. Laura Bartlett photo

Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay I’m a 40-year-old mother of two. I’ve been with the same partner for the last eight years. (He’s not the biological father of my kids, but is very much their beloved stepdad.) We had a great relationship. We had our ups and downs like anyone else, but toward the last half year, it got a little too turbulent. We started fighting a lot more and arguing about the smallest things. Our sex life diminished and we fell distant. My tipping point was when he verbally assaulted me in front of my children and started to boss them around. He never physically assaulted me but, for me, a line had been crossed. I told him it was over and asked him to move out, and the last two weeks of him slowly packing up were uncomfortable and sad for everyone involved. After he moved into his new place, I met an extremely attractive 25-year-old man at a friend’s wedding. He’s actually the nephew of an acquaintance of mine. I know his being 15 years younger than me seems crazy, but the relationship is purely sexual. We see one another once or twice a week. However, during this whole affair, my ex began to reconnect with me, telling me that our break-up was a mistake and that he would do anything to be with his family again. I do love him and would prefer to have him there for my children (he’s a great stepfather), but I need space. I told him we could slowly see one another and take it one step at a time. But he has showed up at my house, unannounced, more than once. This concerns me,

Westender.com

because I also notice that my young booty call seems to be getting attached to me and wanting to be more involved in my life. He told me he wants to take our relationship to the next level. I feel myself getting attached to him, too, in certain ways, but can I really date a 25-year-old kid right now? I appreciate my ex working so hard to rebuild the trust that was lost. So, how do I tell the 25-year-old what’s going on? How do I drop him without seeming insane? Do I tell my ex about this affair, or will that ruin everything we’ve reconciled?

Let me begin by saying that I can’t imagine how sad it was for you to watch a happy eight-year relationship die. I don’t have children and I’ve never been a stepmother, but I’ve heard that those things that begin as babies make the whole dating thing a little more complicated. You can’t just bring any old dickhead home to meet your children – and, depending on their age and gender, I imagine they’ve become attached to their stepfather. The old adage is true: Weddings make people horny. It’s such a good place to meet other lonely singles who need to get fucked. The 25-year-old (I’m going to refer to him as “Junior Diapers”) was a score. Good for you. It must be nice to straddle a young, tight body that hasn’t yet been plagued by years of childcare, beer, bloating and taxes. I’ll bet he has some serious stamina in the sack. Take advantage. Too bad he’s getting so attached, or else his dick could have been your free elliptical machine. I know you want to work it out with your ex for the sake

of the family you’ve created over the last decade. Junior Diapers was a great fling, but you obviously don’t see a future with this boy or else you wouldn’t have second-guessed it. Age shows through someone’s wisdom and manners. If he were mature for his age, ready to take on responsibilities like step-fatherhood or supporting a family, there would be signs. Has he ever mentioned this? Or does he just want to “get to know you better”? Furthermore, do you really want to have him involved with your children? Your ex made a mistake and crossed some lines that hurt both you and your children. Do your kids say they miss him or could they not care less? I don’t want you to curb your own happiness for others, but I also think your children should come first, and it sounds like they do. What’s the point of rushing back into a relationship with your ex? Do what you’re doing: One step at a time. (Plus, moving all his shit right back in? Seems regressive. ) If you want to break it off with Junior Diapers, honesty is always the only policy. Just thank him for the elliptical you never knew you needed, but explain that you can’t be committed to him because of your children. (Yes, blame the kids. They come before your vagina.) You can slowly see the ex again for dates, fucks and general hang-outs, but really try to not swan dive into anything. You don’t need to tell the ex about Junior Diapers – it’s not his business and it will only upset him. Ever seen that movie 1F=# 1F=#? Telling the truth 100 per cent of the time is for the mentally ill. ' B-80 .F!I ;3E# 3@8 %E-!HF38! H3 !->2@-!H-80-#)43< W

NOA NICHOL @adopteezpleez

If not for one detail, Raeleen McArthur is certain that her foster cat, two-year-old Weslee, would have been adopted long ago. “I got a call from the Vancouver Orphaned Kitten Rescue Association [VOKRA] a little short of a year ago,” she recalls. “They said, ‘We have a cat. He’s really sweet but afraid of big spaces, he can’t be placed with other cats or very young children, and he also has seizures.’” Fortunately, Weslee’s epilepsy didn’t deter McArthur from taking him on. As an ER nurse, she thought, “It can’t be that bad.” As it turns out, it isn’t. While epilepsy, as misunderstood as it is, can seem daunting, Weslee’s disorder, which is easily treated with lifelong medication (that he takes willingly, albeit with a treat) and regular veterinary checkups, includes seizures that are “not typical.” “They only happen when he’s asleep at night, and it’s very limited to muscle twitching – it kind of looks like he’s having a dream, except the way his muscles are firing off, you can tell there’s something else going on,” McArthur explains, adding that she prefers to have Weslee sleep with her so she can “feel” a particularly bad episode. “When it’s worse than usual, I wake him up, simply because his tongue may be blocking his airway,” she says. “But he usually wakes up by himself. And when he does, it’s over.” His condition aside, McArthur calls Weslee a “fun and happy guy” whose dominant trait is playfulness. Show him a feather wand, she says, and “it’s on – he will jump and twist with no

regard to how he’s going to land. Luckily, he’s a cat, so it’s usually on all fours!” Best of all, in the nine or 10 months that she’s had the shorthaired orange tabby, she’s seen him “slowly but surely come out of his bubble. He’s still cautious of some spaces – my porch freaks him out a little – but he does get used to them, so at this point I don’t think being in a bigger house would be a problem,” she says, adding that Weslee having been found as a kitten – alone in a boot factory – may contribute to his wariness.

“He’s just a really sweet, easygoing, affectionate guy with beautiful stripes and markings, white boots, cute markings on the sides of his face, and a nice, soft, white belly who is looking for a forever home,” says McArthur. “He’s a great companion and a really great friend to have around.” ' ,=8 ;3E ?33A &=!H5-!?--(! -&F?-&!; =80 "FC- IF< HI- ?3CF8" $3#-C-# I3<- I-(! 9--8 !3 &=HF-8H?; @=FHF8" $3#7 D-=0 IF! $E?? &#3G?- 38 HI-:+6D/ @-9!FH-* 3#&I=8AFHH-8#-!4E-)43<* @I-#- 43<&?-H- =03&HF38 0-H=F?! 4=8 =?!3 9- $3E80) W

BC’s 2017 budget plans for a slower housing market HAYLEY WOODIN @bivnews

The BC government is anticipating double-digit declines in BC housing starts and property transfer tax revenue, and increased revenue from its foreign buyers’ tax, over the course of the next year. A projected slowdown across the BC housing market is expected to leave the province with $483 million less revenue from its property transfer tax in 2017/18 – a 23.9 per cent drop year-overyear as market activity for the year ahead is forecast to return to 2015/16 levels. Over the following two years, the province projects revenue to fall an average of 3.9 per cent annually to reach $1.4 billion in 2019/20, compared with the more than $2 billion generated last year. The anticipated market slowdown tracks, in part,

housing starts, which are expected to drop by 28.4per cent this year, compared to the 33 per cent increase seen in 2016. “We don’t expect the real estate market to be percolating along at the level it was last year,” said Minister of Finance Michael de Jong. Certain taxes on real estate, however, are expected to generate greater revenue over the years to come. Once the current fiscal year ends, BC expects it will have earned $100 million in taxes on residential purchases made by foreign buyers in the Metro Vancouver region. Total revenue from the province’s foreign buyers’ tax – implemented in August of last year – is expected to hit $150 million annually over the next three years: tax generated by $1 billion in residential properties purchased by foreign buyers annually

A projected slowdown across the BC housing market is expected to leave the province with $483 million less revenue from its property transfer tax in 2017/18. Dan Toulgoet photo through to 2019/20. According to Minister de Jong, where foreign activity in Metro Vancouver’s residential real estate once constituted 15-17 per cent of market activity, levels have dropped to between 3-5 per cent, a sign the tax has had the “desired impact.” BC also expects to see property taxes grow by an average of 4.6 per cent per year over the next three years, bringing in an additional $593 million in taxes by

2019/20 over the current fiscal year’s estimates. To address housing affordability, the BC government announced in its budget for 2017 that it will be increasing the threshold of the province’s first-time homebuyer’s program to $500,000 from $475,000, a move it estimates will save first-time buyers up to $8,000 in property transfer taxes. Budget 2017 also provides an additional $159 million to maintain assistance levels for

low-income families and seniors requiring support with their private rental payments. For the year ahead, the province will continue to administer its $700-million BC HOME Partnership program, which offers up to $37,500 in five-year, interest-free loans to first-time homebuyers seeking financial assistance. Government will also continue administrating its previously announced $920 million in funding dedicated to creating additional affordable housing supply. Continuing to explore partnership opportunities with municipal governments to better address housing capacity, and to enhance the processing, approval and permitting of housing development applications, are also a priority for the coming year. –Story courtesy of Business in Vancouver

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

Someone on Reddit.com asked readers to respond to the question, “What is the most liberating thought you’ve ever had?” Among the replies were the following six: 1. “If new evidence presents itself, it’s okay to change my beliefs.” 2. “I get to choose who’s in my life and who isn’t.” 3. “I am not my history.” 4. “You can’t change something that has already happened, so stop worrying about it.” 5. “I am not, nor will I ever be, conventionally beautiful.” 6. “I don’t have to respond to people when they say stupid s--- to me.” I hope these testimonies inspire you to come up with several of your own, Taurus. It’s a perfect time to formulate liberating intentions.

It has been a while since I told you that I love you. So I’m doing it now. I LOVE YOU. More than you could ever imagine. And that’s why I continue to offer these horoscopes to you free of charge, with no strings attached. That’s why I work so hard to be a playful therapist and an edgy mentor for you. That’s why I am so tenacious in my efforts to serve you as a feminist father figure and a kindly devil’s advocate and a sacred cheerleader. Again, I don’t expect anything in return from you. But if you would like to express your appreciation, you could do so by offering a similar type of well-crafted care to people in your own sphere. Now would be an excellent time to give such gifts.

“I like the word ‘bewilderment’ because it has both ‘be’ and ‘wild’ in it,” says poet Peter Gizzi. I propose that you go even further, Cancerian: Express a fondness for the actual experience of bewilderment as well as the word. In fact, be willing to not just tolerate but actually embrace the fuzzy blessings of bewilderment. In the coming weeks, that’s your ticket to being wild in the healthiest (and wealthiest) ways. As you wander innocently through the perplexing mysteries that make themselves available, you’ll be inspired to escape formalities and needless rules that have kept you overly tame.

Are you familiar with psychologist Carl Jung’s concept of the shadow? It’s the unflattering or uncomfortable part of you that you would prefer to ignore or suppress. It’s the source of behaviour about which you later say, “I wasn’t acting like myself.” Jungians say that the shadow hounds you and wounds you to the degree that you refuse to deal with it. But if you negotiate with it, it leads you to beautiful surprises. It prods you to uncover riches you’ve hidden from yourself. I mention this, Leo, because any shadow work you do in the coming weeks could generate rather spectacular breakthroughs.

You could make a vow like this: “Between now and April 15, I will be relentless in getting my needs met. I will harbour a steely resolve to call on every ploy necessary to ensure that my deepest requirements are not just gratified, but satiated to the max. I will be a dogged and ferocious seeker of absolute fulfillment.” If you want to swear an oath like that, Virgo, I understand. But I hope you will try a softer approach – more like the following: “Between now and April 15, I will be imaginative and ingenious in getting my needs met. I will have fun calling on every trick necessary to ensure that my deepest requirements are playfully addressed. I will be a sweet seeker of unpredictable fulfillment.”

Horoscopes as provided by WE Editorial

My astrological radar suggests there’s a space-time anomaly looming just ahead of you. Is it a fun and exotic limbo where the rules are flexible and everything’s an experiment? That might be cool. Or is it more like an alien labyrinth where nothing is as it seems, you can hear howling in the distance, and you barely recognize yourself? That might be weird. What do you think? Is it worth the gamble? If so, full speed ahead. If not, I suggest a course correction.

RENOS & HOME IMPROVEMENT

How would Buddha ask for a raise or promotion? How would Jesus tinker with his career plans as he took into consideration large-scale shifts in the economy? How would Confucius try to infuse new approaches and ideas into the status quo of his work environment? Ruminate deeply on these matters, dear Libra. Your yearning to be more satisfyingly employed may soon be rewarded – especially if you infuse your ambitions with holy insight. How would Joan of Arc break through the glass ceiling? How would Harriet Tubman deal with the inefficiencies caused by excess testosterone? How would Hildegard of Bingen seek more emotional richness on the job?

I suspect you would benefit from acquiring a new bedroom name, my dear. But should I be the one to give it to you? I’m not sure. Maybe you could invite a practical dreamer you adore to provide you with this crazy-sweet new moniker. If there is no such person to do the job (although given the current astrological omens, I bet there is), I’ll offer the following array of amorous aliases for you to choose from: Wild Face… Kiss Genius… Thrill Witch . . . Freaky Nectar … Boink Master… Lust Moxie… Pearly Thunder… Peach Licker… Painkiller… Silky Bliss… Slippery Diver… Swoon Craver.

Soon I’ll be off on my first vacation in 18 months. At first glance it might seem odd for an astrologer like myself to have selected two Sagittarians to be my housesitters. Members of your sign are reputed to be among the least home-nurturing people in the zodiac. But I’m confident that by the time I return, raccoons won’t be living in my kitchen, nor will my plants be dead or my snailmail stolen or my TV broken. The current astrological omens suggest that most of you Centaurs, at least for the foreseeable future, will display an uncommon aptitude for the domestic arts.

The near future will be mutable, whimsical, and fluky. It’ll be serendipitous, mercurial, and extemporaneous. You should expect happy accidents and lucky breaks. Your ability to improvise will be quite valuable. Do you believe in lucky numbers? Even if you don’t, yours will be 333. Your sacred password will be “quirky plucky.” The cartoon characters with whom you will have most in common are Bugs Bunny and Roadrunner. The place where you’re most likely to encounter a crucial teaching is a threshold or thrift shop. Your colours of destiny will be flecked and dappled. (P.S. I suspect that an as-yet-undiscovered talisman of power is crammed in a drawer full of junk.)

Treat your body like a sublime temple, please. And regard your imagination as a treasured sanctuary. Be very choosy about what you allow to enter into both of those holy places. This strategy is always a wise idea, of course, but it’s especially so now, when you are extra sensitive to the influences you absorb. It’s crucial that you express maximum discernment as you determine which foods, drinks, drugs, images, sounds, and ideas are likely to foster your maximum well-being – and which aren’t. Be a masterful caretaker of your health and sanity.

What would your best mother do in a situation like this? Please note that I’m not asking, “What would your mother do?” I’m not suggesting you call on the counsel of your actual mother. When I use the term “your best mother,” I’m referring to the archetype of your perfect mother. Imagine a wise older woman who understands you telepathically, loves you unconditionally, and wants you to live your life according to your own inner necessity, not hers or anyone else’s. Visualize her. Call on her. Seek her blessings.
