The tarnished halo of the Canucks’ Alex Burrows Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown

Poem of the week
@GrantLawrence
It wasn’t quite as emotional as when Trevor Linden or Kirk McLean were traded away, but it was up there. Last week, Alexandre Burrows – the longtime Canucks goal scorer, agitator, dragon slayer, arrow slinger, referee magnet, and alleged finger biter – was traded to the Ottawa Senators. This, after 12 tumultuous, passionate and entertaining years of service to your Vancouver Canucks. Love him or hate him, it was never boring with Burrows around – love and hate being the range of emotions he stirred up in fans and foes. He’s responsible for arguably some of the biggest goals in franchise history. And his nickname, Burr, is just about perfect (though I preferred the much-less-used tag of “The Arrow,” after his penchant for miming an archer with a bow and arrow after scoring, a tribute to his deceased teammate and friend, Luc Bourdon). Beyond the goals and the controversies, what makes the Burrows saga so intriguing is its rags-to-riches origins. A championship ball-hockey player who was never drafted by the NHL, he determinedly played professional ice hockey for Podunk East Coast Hockey League teams like the Greenville Grrrowl (actual spelling), the Baton Rouge Kingfish, and the Columbia Inferno. That’s where the GM of the Manitoba Moose noticed his energy and scoring touch. From the Moose, Burrows broke in with the Canucks in the 2005-2006 season. He became a Vancouver fan favourite playing with Ryan “Nudie” Kesler, when they were the most highly ef-

The fate of the Canucks would change dramatically when, on February 12, 2009, Burrows was placed on the top line with the Sedin twins. All three players flourished, and they became the most dominant scoring line in the NHL. And then there were the Big Three Burrows goals: • The highly dramatic, shorthanded breakaway tally that snapped the Canucks’ worst home-losing streak in franchise history, back in 2009 (eight games). The goal and the win sparked the team to their franchise-best homewinning streak (10 games). • The ball-hockey-like Game Seven overtime goal to beat the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the 2011 playoffs. As play-by-play man John Shorthouse famously called, the Canucks finally “slayed the dragon.” • The overtime goal in Game Two of the Stanley Cup Finals over the Boston Bruins, which was the second-fastest OT goal in Finals history. It gave the Canucks a 2-0 series lead, but it wasn’t enough. There are some, like TSN Radio’s Dave Pratt, who thinks Burrows’s big moments are enough to merit hoisting his number 14 into
the rafters of Rogers Arena alongside 12 (Smyl), 16 (Linden), 19 (Naslund), and 10 (Bure). I love what Burrows did for the Canucks, but let’s not get crazy. For every big goal in his career, there was an equally big controversy, like the time he was accused of biting a Boston Bruins forward on the finger in Game One of the final. Or when he accused referee Stéphane Auger of being out to get him. Or when Ron MacLean, host of Hockey Night In Canada, spent more than 10 minutes of a Saturday night telecast reviewing multiple examples of Burrows’s questionable on-ice antics, which raised the ire of Canucks management, teammates, fans, and Burrows’s parents. For the record, MacLean has this to say about the incident, eight years later: “I had heard from [ex-Canuck] Willie Mitchell that Alex was very much admired by his teammates, and that was good enough for me to offer an olive branch on air. Alex is a wonderful player with a fine career and better story... but there is a bit of tarnish on his halo.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. Enjoy Ottawa, Alex, and thanks for the memories. There was never a dull moment. W

End of an era WestValley Market to close its doors after over 40 years in theWest End
SARAH RIPPLINGER @westendervan
“Running this type of business is really just blood, sweat and tears,” said Colin Lo, sitting in an office in the back of the West End grocery store his family has owned and operated for over 40 years, a small space heater whirring to warm the late winter afternoon air. West Valley Market opened its doors on Bute Street in 1975. It was run by the Lo brothers: Bob, who started the business; Alfred; and Andrew, Colin’s father, who im-
migrated to Vancouver from Hong Kong in the 1970s. Andrew took over after Alfred passed away and Bob needed to step away from the business. Like his brothers, Andrew had a tireless work ethic, running the store 365 days a year, from 9am to 11pm. West Valley Market became something residents could rely on for their fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as non-perishable items. Times were changing, though, and 10 years ago, when Andrew was in his late 50s, Andrew’s wife Fanny and son Colin became coowners to help keep the business afloat. At its peak, West Valley Market had up to 13 staff on hand to serve customers, work the cash registers and stock over 5,000 square feet of shelves, freezers and
displays with food. The family often employed new immigrants to Canada. They listened to the needs of the community and adjusted their orders to accommodate the tastes of the neighbourhood. The business thrived, but Colin Lo’s involvement waned as commitments to his two young daughters and full-time work as a realtor took priority. In late 2016, after the death of a relative who had been helping out a lot at the store, Colin said the family decided it was time to close. “It’s a little bit bittersweet,” said Lo. “I’ve met a lot of people. For my dad, more so.” “We’ve really been like an institution for the West End area and I think there is a responsibility for us to support the community. The way we support them is by bringing in foods that they are used to, want and can’t get anywhere in the area. … It might not be a huge money-
What to pack for spring break Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor
While we all love summer vacation and cosy winter mini-breaks, there’s nothing more alluring than escaping Vancouver’s unreliable spring for some other place’s sunsoaked one. So let’s fantasize for a moment that our 2017 spring break will include bikinis and bronzed beach bods, rather than battling the commute in raincoat and
wellies. Here’s what we’ll be (pretend) packing.
1. GOING SWIMMINGLY
Let’s leave our trusty black Speedo in the back of a drawer and pack something bright and beautiful. BC brand Bikini Empire specializes in ethical swimwear (made in Vancouver) with a tropical aesthetic. This season’s collection, Retro Baja, has throwback motifs in a Mexican-themed colour palette. Our pick: the Reversible V-Neck One Piece ($160), which comes in a
Colin Lo and family outside their West End shop. File photo maker for us, but we do what we can and we listen, and I think that’s very important. And that’s what we’re going to miss the most. Because there are a lot of relationships built over the years.” Local resident Jean Milne, 68, has been living in the West End since 1984 and regularly walks to West Valley Market for groceries. After inquiring about the fact that
the grocery store shelves were looking bare, staff confided to her that they would soon be closing shop. “I’m really sad it’s going,” she said over the phone. “It’s just a very friendly place that’s been responsive to what people want to buy.” Milne appreciated that West Valley Market carried a wide variety of foods, including a lot of Tex-Mex staples,
tortillas and cornhusks, which she used for making tamales, and all within walking distance from her home. Zaira Herrera, owner of Don Chendo Products, has been supplying Mexican foods to West Valley Market on a weekly basis for around three years. “It’s going to be a huge impact to our business,” she said in a telephone interview. “They were always looking for new stuff [Mexican food] and eager to supply that [to their customers].” “They were always quite nice and went the extra mile to please their clients,” she added. “It’s a great loss.” West Valley Market will gradually sell off their products until the end of May. “I still believe there is a place and need for small businesses [like West Valley Market],” said Lo, adding that he plans on continuing to support independent grocers by going to them to purchase food for his family. 2. DRESSED FOR SUCCESS
3.
We’re done with generic little strappy dresses. Instead, bring this embroidered dress ($89.90, at Zara and zara. com/ca). It’s bold but not gaudy, and can be slung on over a bathing suit or worn for cocktails in the evening.
4.
3. BEST FOOT FORWARD
It’s easy to tumble off heels when you’re three daiquiris over your usual limit, but many flats look too casual. Get sandals in gold, like these simple Toe-post ones ($19.99, at H&M and hm.com), so things stay classy.
4. TO TAN OR NOT TO TAN?
Never a real tan, of course – SPF40 is mandatory. If we fancy the bronzed look, we’ll fake it with St.Tropez Gradual Tan ($38, at Shoppers Drug Mart), which comes in an easy-to-apply mousse, contains moisturizing ingredients, and
5. 2. gives a gradual, buildable, natural-looking tan. If we’re feeling more “pale and interesting,” we’ll apply French Girl Organics Lumière in Moonlight ($60, at India Rose Cosmeticary). It adds a pearlescent glow to collarbone, shoulders and legs, smells like jasmine and neroli, and is vegan and at least 80 per cent organic.
5. HAIR TODAY
Sun, sea and sand are horrible for our hair, drying
it out and making it look the very opposite of swishy and fabulous. AG Hair has just launched Fast Food Leave On Conditioner, with humectants to draw moisture into frazzled hair, and oil to keep it there. $22, at select salons, ulta.com, loxabeauty. com and chatters.ca.
6. TALON SHOW
A vibrant nail colour completes the picture. We’ll be heading to Onyx Aesthet-
ics Studio (421 Abbott St.) for a Shellac manicure ($50) in Mambo Beat – a glorious red/orange shade from CND’s tropical-themed Rhythm & Heat collection. We’ll pair it with a Vinylux pedi ($45) in the same colour, and in case of nail emergencies, probably pick up a bottle of the Vinylux ($12.50), too. Or we might just throw caution to the wind and ask for the Heat Wave nail-art mani. W
BC ready to ‘dangle’ Uber, other ride-sharing services ahead of election Five years after its initial attempt to launch in Vancouver, ride-sharing services like Uber look set to get the green light for BC roads. The province announced Tuesday (March 7) it will be ready to roll out ride-sharing services by the holiday season of 2017, meaning the introduction of Uber or Lyft would have to come after May’s provincial election. “There’s a lot of pressure on the government, particularly from millennials, to get some-

thing that is beyond what the taxis are offering,” said lawyer Bill McLachlan, who represents the BC Taxi Association. He added the timing of the rollout is not surprising. “If the Liberals get elected, they want to dangle these incentives. And if they don’t [get elected], who knows where these things will go?” Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Peter Fassbender, who handles the ride-sharing portfolio in cabinet, andTransportation
MinisterTodd Stone said the government would help the taxi industry to stay competitive. Among the initiatives announced was an investment of up to $1 million to develop a new app for the taxi industry with shared dispatch, as well as hailing and payment options similar to what other ridesharing services offer. The province also said it would work with municipalities to allow ride-sharing drivers and taxi drivers to pick up and drop off in different cities.
Currently, a Vancouver taxi driver can pick up in Vancouver and drop off in Coquitlam. But the Vancouver driver would not be able to pick up a passenger in Coquitlam while driving back to his home base. Uber initially tried to launch in Vancouver in 2012, but it was forced to suspend operations after it was determined to be functioning as a limo service and therefore had to comply with limo rules, including a minimum $75 charge for rides. –Tyler Orton, BIV.com

@FoodgirlFriday So, here I am, writing about a plant-based eatery for the second week in a row. Am I becoming a vegetarian? A vegan? Sorry. Nope. Chalk it up to the luck of the stars or my craving for pizza – either one works. Despite its slightly prudish name, the interior of Virtuous Pie, a recent addition to Chinatown, gives off mega-hip vibes. The long, narrow room is bright, with high ceilings, communal wood tables grouped along one side, and the kitchen and ordering counter along the other. It’s part of the increasingly popular “fast-casual” breed of restaurant:You order at the counter and clean up after yourself, but the food is made from quality ingredients and prepared with care. People still seem a bit confused as to whether they should sit after ordering, especially at a table that might already be occupied by one or two people (each can seat at least eight comfortably). But that’s more a symptom of locals’ standoffishness than a fault of the restaurant. Perhaps with time, customers will become easy with the idea of sitting opposite and next to strangers. The most important part of any pizza is the dough, so let’s talk about that first. It’s good. Really good. This

The Curry Mile pizza with mint raita. Dan Toulgoet photo isn’t verace Napoletana, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s thin, but not too thin, with a crispy base and an interior that offers a pleasant chew. Even better for celiacs and all those avoiding the dreaded “G,” the gluten-free version (courtesy of NextJen and available for an extra three dollars) is just as good. As for the toppings, the eight pizzas on the menu range from a simple Margherita ($10) with San Marzano tomatoes and cashew mozzarella, to a more exotic jackfruit-and-hoisin option ($12). If you’re looking for the “cheesy-queasy” factor of regular cheese, you may be disappointed: There was no stringy gooeyness here. The flavour of the “mozza” was delicate, yes, but almost overpowered by the slightly spicy, very good tomato sauce. When the pizza was still hot and fresh, the texture was less distinguishable, but as soon as it cooled slightly (think a couple minutes later), it developed a strange plastic texture – easy to bite through, but slightly gelatinous.
That same not-cheese made an appearance on the Superfunghi ($12), along with a truffle almond ricotta. There was a lot to admire in this pizza. A decent Bianca (white sauce) was topped with a thin layer of herbaceous potato before perfectly cooked mushrooms and crisp rocket were added. But the truffle ricotta didn’t taste of truffle and only faintly resembled ricotta, and the texture became almost hard after a few bites. Perhaps for someone used to eating “cheez,” this would be acceptable. I was left wondering why they bothered in the first place, as I’d have enjoyed the pizza more without it (although truffles are always welcome). The jackfruit – or “KimJack” – pie ($12) is an interesting combination that has serious potential. Gochujang-braised jackfruit is paired with kimchi, roasted broccolini, scallions, cashew mozzarella and hoisin “crema.” The gochujang and kimchi gave it a nice kick without burning the buds, but the hoisin crema

overpowered most of the flavours, including the natural savoury-sweetness of the jackfruit itself. A little more balance here would work wonders. Much better was the “sausage” and fennel, with its earthy and almosttoo-rich palate. Virtuous Pie also offers a couple of rotating salads and various flavours of ice cream (dairy-free, natch). A southwest avocado salad ($4 as a side; $10 as a main) was excellent, built with glutenfree fusilli, corn, feta, black beans, red cabbage, tomato, and a very tasty avocado-lime dressing. It’s also a bit of a bargain: The side portion came in a small but deep bowl that almost filled me up before my pizza was ready. I only tried two of the nine flavours of ice cream: “Hawaiian” vanilla was too chalky to finish and, at $5 for a small scoop, felt stingy. Slightly better was salted caramel and pecan. The overall range of flavours (turmeric and black pepper; matcha coconut) appeared too heavy and overpowering after what were rather filling pies. A clean sorbet option, like lemon or raspberry, would have been more appreciated after some of the heartier pizzas. There is good value to be had here. Each pie is about 10 inches in diameter and most are $12. One will fill you up, no question, especially if paired with a side salad. W Food: !!!!! Service: N/A Ambiance: !!!!! Value: !!!!! The right glass for the right drink Joanne Sasvari The Alchemist
@TheAlchemistBC
In the months before the Rosewood Hotel Georgia’s subterranean bar, Prohibition, opened, head bartender Brad Stanton spent countless hours obsessing over every detail, from a state-of-the-art ice-maker to stylish copper bar tools. One of the things he obsessed over most was the glassware. “It was definitely a big consideration for us to open with glassware that was unique,” says Stanton, noting that he “wanted to honour the historic tradition of the place,” but he still needed glassware that was contemporary and durable. “You don’t know if a glass will endure the harsh environment of a bar until you use it.” Why bother? you might wonder. A glass is just a glass, right? Isn’t it what’s inside that counts? Yes – and no. It does matters, says Robyn Gray, who shares the head bartender role at Prohibition, “because you drink with your eyes, just like you eat with your eyes.”
Besides, he adds, “Glassware plays an important role with your senses when you decide what kind of drink to have.” It’s something to consider if you’re stocking your home bar, too. Aside from looking good, certain glasses are meant for certain drinks. (It’s called a Martini glass for a reason.) Unlike wine, where varietal-specific glassware can enhance the tropicalfruit aromas of a Riesling or the spiced-berry notes of a Pinot Noir, the right glass for a cocktail isn’t based so much on the flavour of the drink. “It’s really important to know what ice you’re using and pick the glass for that,” says Stanton. For instance, the tall, skinny Collins glass is meant for thirst-quenching drinks made “long,” with lots of ice
and soda. The short, sturdy Old Fashioned – or “rocks” – glass is designed for strong drinks enjoyed with one or two big cubes or a sphere of ice. And the tall, stemmed cocktail coupe is for drinks enjoyed “up,” or without ice – like, say, a Manhattan or a Cosmo. (The curved coupe, reportedly modelled after Marie Antoinette’s breast, has made a comeback in recent years, replacing the V-shaped “tini” glasses we remember from the 1990s.) If you’re planning to offer a full bar in your home, those are the basic glasses you’ll need, not including wineglasses. To those basics, you can add tiki mugs, port glasses, Glencairns for single malt, silver julep cups, copper mule mugs, even absinthe glasses.
As for style, you can go sleek or ornate, cheap or luxe, contemporary, vintageinspired or actual vintage. “At my home bar, I have all vintage glasses that I’ve purchased through thrift stores,” says Gray. “It’s all cut crystal and it’s just beautiful.” On the other hand, you can go totally minimalistic, the way Stanton does. “Honestly, at home I have a very, very streamlined bar,” he says, noting that he only has rocks glasses and wineglasses. “I don’t have any antique glassware at all. I do a lot of cooking at home, and it had to be one or the other.” Then again, he has plenty of glassware to play with at work. That includes the Teku beer-tasting glass designed for the connoisseur, the elegant but sturdy Leopold coupe from Cocktail Kingdom, and Nachtmann’s sophisticated etched-crystal Prestige line of rocks and Collins glasses. “It evokes that antique, historic look, but it’s modern and durable,” he says. “We’re all about that at Hotel Georgia and Prohibition: honouring our past. A nod to history, without feeling dated.” W

The women behind Chambar’s wine program Michaela Morris By the Bottle
@MichaelaWine
While this article coincides with International Women’s Day (Mar. 8), I’ve been meaning to profile the wine program at Chambar since it passed into the capable care of Kaela Augustine, Laura Starr and Maude RenaudBrisson last year. The Crosstown restaurant’s trifecta is a testament to the increasing number of intelligent and talented women in Vancouver who take the sommelier profession seriously. Let me be clear: It does not take three women to replace one Jason Yamasaki, the award-winning sommelier who was running the program until May 2016. He’d be the first to admit that he had help during his tenure from Kieran Fanning (who has since moved to Farmer’s Apprentice) and the aforementioned Augustine. “The transition was very organic,” says the latter. “It got a lot of attention for being three women, but that wasn’t the objective. It just happened to be that way.”
Rather than look outside the restaurant to hire a new wine director,Yamasaki passed the torch to Augustine along with Starr, who had been working her way up through Chambar’s ranks. He then introduced them to Maude RenaudBrisson, formerly of the sommelier team at Nightingale. The three clicked immediately in terms of philosophy and vision. “Jason was the puppet-master of it all,” jokes Renaud-Brisson. Together they intend to take the program to the next level. “There was a decision to make it a group effort; a team of equals rather than hierarchal,” says Starr. They’re still playing around with their roles, but they’ve fallen into a natural division of responsibilities that plays to each of their strengths. Augustine oversees the international wines on the list, while Renaud-Brisson is in charge of enhancing the selection of local offerings. I chatted with the latter shortly before she took off for the Okanagan, where she’s working with Laughing Stock Vineyards on a Viognier/Roussanne blend that will be exclusive to Chambar. In
From left: Kaela Augustine, Laura Starr and Maude Renaud-Brisson. Contributed photo the spirit of teamwork, she brought Augustine with her. Starr would have joined them, but someone had to hold down the fort. She represents the link between the wine team and the restaurant’s massive 170-count staff, of which 65 to 70 are front-of-house. With a solid
background in education (teaching special needs to grades 3 and 4 kids), Starr has taken on the crucial role of staff training. “We want to make sure that everyone is getting some exposure to the list and that they feel comfortable talking to someone about wine,” she says.
The collaborative effort is greater than the sum of its parts. “We each have different palates, so we’re able to appeal to a broad range of customers,” says RenaudBrisson. She’s very keen on Chambar’s assortment of Rieslings, especially in terms of how they complement the
“crazy spices” chef/owner Nico Schuermans uses. Her suggestion? The 2011 Joh. Jos Prüm Riesling Kabinett ($95/bottle) from Mosel, Germany. When looking to please a wide variety of preferences at one table, Starr recommends the 2014 Clos Martinet Menut Priorat DOQ, a Grenache/Merlot blend from Spain ($68/bottle), declaring, “It’s also one of those bangfor-the-buck wines on the list.” Augustine, who has been at Chambar the longest of the three, loves upholding the restaurant’s tradition of introducing guests to new wines “that will blow their minds,” as she put it. If Pinot Grigio is your thing, she may just sway you toward the 2015 Katogi & Strofilia White Dot ($55/bottle), a Moschofilero/Roditis blend from Greece. She also makes a special point of letting me know that Chambar now pours a lesser-known but top-notch Champagne, Pierre Gimonnet ‘Cuis’ 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut n/v, by the glass ($28). Creative, passionate and unpretentious, these three graces have this wine program nailed. W
Brew Kid on the Block: Andina ence with breweries. Again, we lost time and money!
Robert Mangelsdorf The Growler
@TheGrowlerBC On March 1, the long-awaited Andina Brewing Company finally opened its doors at 1507 Powell Street, much to the relief of the Amaya family. After years of red tape, false starts, construction delays, and permit after permit after permit, the family-owned brewery was allowed to begin pouring pints of its South American-inspired craft beer. Despite the ever-crowded Yeast Van brewing district in which it’s located, Andina’s bold style and unique take on craft beer are sure to set it apart.Think British Columbia meets Colombia Colombia. The brewery itself is gorgeous, and has clearly been worth the wait. The glitzy brewhouse and spectacular two-storey facade that adorns the front of the banana-yellow building are hard to miss – but don’t be fooled. Andina is very much a family operation with humble roots. I talked to co-owner Nicolás Amaya about the long journey to now, and the real work that is to come. Tell me a bit about the process. What were some of the unexpected twists and turns you encountered along the way?
Westender.com
Dan Toulgoet photo It was a long process to get to what we are now. From the initial idea to opening day has been almost five years in the making. First, it was hard finding a suitable location big enough for our needs now and in the future. We spend a lot of time looking, and once we got it, we encounter some hurdles related to the age of the building. Finding three floors of concrete exactly where our tasting room is took us a long time to dig. Next, we found that the main water pipe to the building was corroded – we had to replace it, which delayed us for an additional two months and blew out our budget, since we had to take care of the upgrade ourselves, without the landlord’s help. Also, ensuring that the building had the correct power to run a brewery – it was fun trying to rebuild the wiring. And, of course, all the delays related with permits and inspections from the city.We also made some rookie mistakes, like hiring a design/architect company that didn’t have experi-
What makes East Van a good place to brew? I think the whole area is very eclectic and culturally diverse. I feel that Andina fits really well in the neighborhood, not only because it’s already known for the craft beer as a destination, but also because we’re bringing something new to this community, which is the South American touch to our beers, décor, food and music. Just look at the building facade! What are you doing differently that sets you apart from some of the other breweries nearby? Our [Colombian] heritage is used as the theme for our brewery – the fact that we’re the first brewery in Canada to import malts from Chile. We’re also committed to reducing our environmental footprint: Andina will be the first brewery in the world to implement the Piranha, a self-contained heat pump that extracts thermal energy from wastewater. We’re using an ozone sanitation system to save energy and water. We also source our local and foreign ingredients responsibly, making it a point to partner with certified sustainable [and] fair-trade suppliers that meet our environmental guidelines. Even our spoons are biodegradable. W

A step ahead Award-winning choreographer gets personal with LGBTQ themes SARAH RIPPLINGER @sarahripplinger
Travis Wall has the rare fortune of living a dream he’s had since childhood. In his latest production, Shaping Sound:After the Curtain, the accomplished dancer and choreographer draws from elements of his personal life to share a story about sexual acceptance and love. Wall’s introduction to the rhythmic movements of dance began while he was still in the womb, in his birthplace of Virginia Beach,
Travis Wall
PHOTO: MATTHEW MURPHY
Va. His mother, a dance instructor, often placed baby Travis’s crib in her eponymously named studio Denise Wall’s Dance Energy. “The dance studio was my babysitter,”Wall said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles, where he’s now based. “I used to mimic the other dancers in the studio... and I haven’t stopped dancing since.” Wall got his first big break when he landed a spot on a Dr. Pepper commercial at age nine. This exposure opened the door to more commercial work, prompting Wall to move to New York City at age 12 where he had his Broadway debut in the revival production of The Music Man. “I was a kid in NewYork City,” said Wall somewhat wistfully. “That changed my life.” Wall went on to win runner-up on the second season of SoYou ThinkYou Can Dance, along with a
2015 Emmy for outstanding choreography and a Country Music Television award for choreographing Carrie Underwood’s “Something in the Water” music video. For someone still in his 20s – Wall turns 30 in September – he has an enviable number of accomplishments already under his belt. That’s not to say that he’s had it easy. Despite all the success,Wall has found himself “living paycheque to paycheque” in an industry where the demands for talent and time are often high. “It’s the hardest thing in the world trying to maintain balance, stay healthy, come up for air at times… have a healthy relationship and lifestyle,” said Wall. His solution? Use it. “Instead of dwelling on my frustrations I get inspired by them and create from there.” In After the Curtain – the
second production from the Shaping Sound dance company Wall founded with partners Nick Lazzarini,Teddy Forance and Kyle Robinson in 2012 – Wall takes audiences to the opening night of a stage performance set in the 1940s. The protagonist, performed by Wall, struggles with the emotional turmoil of losing his true love and decides to reveal that he is gay to his cast members. It’s a theme with personal undertones for Wall, who first realized he had feelings for another male on his 16th birthday. That was both a difficult and amazing time, said Wall, reflecting on how he had won a competition that year, was touring extensively and had a girlfriend at the time. Wall turned to his art as an outlet for self-expression and emotional release, later incorporating LGBTQ narratives in his creative work
and public life. In a November 2016 MTV News video,Wall shared his experience of realizing he was gay and called for a broader cultural discussion about acceptance, particularly one that included youth. A 2014 SoYou ThinkYou Can Dance performance choreographed by Wall featured same-sex couples – a first for the show – and advocated for equal marriage rights for all Americans. The performance earned Wall his fifth Emmy nomination, and he went on to win the coveted prize for another routine the next year. That said, finding a platform for choreography that touched on LGBTQ themes has been a challenge,Wall said, particularly for routines of his destined for the small screen. Attitudes seem to be changing though, Wall added, and there is growing receptiveness among producers to depict LGBTQ
subject matter on television and other platforms. The fact that After the Curtain exposes audiences to LGBTQ culture is something thatWall believes can play an important role in dispelling false beliefs and negative views of people in the LGBTQ community. The production shows the universal nature of love through a fusion of jazz, modern and hip hop performed by a cast of 12 dancers. “This show is all about love is love is love,” said Wall, who got engaged to his partner of six years, UCLA gymnastics coach Dom Palange, last March. “I’m very fortunate to have this space to create this show... and not have to put a filter on anything.” q v w v puwv ~{ runs Mar. 25 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre.Ticketstonight.ca W

Sonic Boom Festival explores a boundless musical world MICHAEL WHITE @bequietmichael
When musician and composer Dorothy Chang arrived in Vancouver from her native US in 2003, to become a professor of music at UBC, she “didn’t know a lot about Vancouver’s music scene,” she admits. “I knew there was one; I just wasn’t very familiar with what was going on.” A pianist since the age of six, Chang was studying business at the University of Michigan when her interest was piqued by an ‘Introduction to Contemporary Music’ class available to students not majoring in music. In her third year, she switched her major to composition. ‘Contemporary’ music – an amorphous, eclectic notion of classical music that marries traditional forms to folk, world music, pop, electronics, and seemingly everything else under the sun – “just
spoke to me,” she recalls. “I liked the wide range of expressions, the expansion of all of the languages and materials I’d learned to that point. It just opened up a new world. It sparked this immense curiosity.” Settling into the city and her new job, she was relieved to find a welcoming environment in which her own music could grow. “It’s a young enough music scene that new musicians can come in and have a place to be heard, and gain an audience and have support. I benefitted from that, because I was a newcomer.” Chang finds that same climate of inclusiveness in the Sonic Boom Festival, an annual, multi-day presentation of new works from BC composers, presented by local non-profit society Vancouver Pro Musica (VPM). For this year’s edition, Chang is serving an enhanced role as
Left: Composer Dorothy Chang. Contribued photo Right: Cellist Marina Hasselberg. Alex Waterhouse-Hayward photo VPM’s composer-in-residence. Not only is one of her own pieces being performed; she also will provide feedback to other composers about their compositions and technique, and act as an informal host at the four nights of concerts. Owing to its ambiguous name and its roots in classical
works from before the 20th century, contemporary music continually has to work hard to reach the unconverted, who anticipate uptight formalism and sprawling orchestras playing hour-long symphonies. In fact, contemporary usually involves solo performers or small ensembles, and values brevity as much as the
exploratory. “It’s difficult to categorize it because it’s so diverse,” Chang concedes. “So when people say ‘I don’t like contemporary music’ or ‘I don’t understand it,’ I wonder if they’re truly aware of all the different genres and styles that are out there right now. “One thing this festival does very well is provide a snapshot of many different things that people are writing, at all levels, from emerging composers to former composers-inresidence of the VSO.There’s going to be a huge variety.” This year, that variety includes cellist Marina Hasselberg, formerly of Portugal and now based in Vancouver, who, in addition to her work with baroque ensembles and orchestras, has performed with pop stars including Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey; and Erato Ensemble, an eightpiece collective that describes itself as “not your grandmother’s classical music,”
incorporating a solo vocalist and unconventional instrumentation such as saxophone and electric guitar. The only unifying attribute of the fest’s performers is that all of them are based in this province. “I think of it as one of the major events of contemporary music in Vancouver,” Chang says of Sonic Boom, “because it’s the only festival I know of that features exclusively the music of BC composers. If anyone is curious about what kind of music is being written in the realm of contemporary classical in BC, it’s a great way of resourcing all of that at once. And what I also love about it is it creates this larger music community, because it brings together the emerging with the established composers, side by side in the same concert.” • The 2017 Sonic Boom Festival runs Mar. 16-19 and various venues.Tickets and info: vancouverpromusica.ca W
Ballet BC fetes Canadian talent Dustin
Milligan: Make ’em laugh
BRITTANY TIPLADY @yellowbird888
“We have a very vibrant dance community in this city,” says Ballet BC artistic director Emily Molnar. “It’s something that’s being looked at around the world and it’s a moment to celebrate. It’s a moment to applaud the talent that is staying here in this province.” In celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary, Ballet BC takes to the Queen Elizabeth stage with Program 2, featuring performances by four unique BC-inspired choreographers. Promising a dynamic and eclectic evening, Molnar has curated a program that promotes the province’s wide range of local, innovative talent. Company 605 opens the night with the world premiere of Anthem, a large-scale piece and an entirely new venture for co-artistic directors Lisa Gelley and Josh Martin, as well as for the Ballet BC cast. “[Company 605] is such a dynamic voice right now, not only in BC but across Canada,” says Molnar. “They’re bringing such a fusion of approaches to dance together. They’ve never worked with a ballet company before, but I’ve been a fan of their work and watched them develop artistically. “This is what Ballet BC is about,” she continues. “It’s about giving an opportunity to a really talented individual or company of individuals. It’s also such a wonderful learning [curve] for us at Ballet BC, because we’re bringing our understanding and background of contemporary ballet into Lisa and Josh’s voice, and that kind of sharing and platform being

Ballet BC dancers in ‘Solo Echo’. Michael Slobodian photo created is really delightful.” Following Anthem is a piece set by Ballet BC alumni Wen Wei: a contemporary pointe adaptation of Swan Lake and The Dying Swan, set to the original Swan Lake score, bridged with a fresh musical composition. “[Wei] is such an important voice right now in our country and also in our province,” Molnar enthuses. “I think it’s going to be a very curious piece – intimate, but a little bit on the edge. It’s very compelling work.” Partnered in the same area of the program is another world premiere. Emerging choreographer Lesley Telford debuts If IWere To, a duet performed by Emily Chessa and Brandon Alley alongside Vancouver-based spokenword poet Barbara Adler. Inspired by narcissism, the duet delves into our sensual relationships, exploring chasms both inanimate and human. “[Telford] has such a profound way of tapping into very deep recesses of our emotional and intellectual landscapes,” says Molnar. “Her physicality is very wonderful and very today. I think she’s a very exciting choreographer to
watch as we go forward in this next generation of choreographers.” Anchoring the evening is the return of the critically acclaimed Solo Echo by veteran artist and Ballet BC alumni Crystal Pite. While Solo Echo is well rehearsed by the company, Molnar felt including the popular work paired well with the BC-themed evening. Asked if she has any preshow jitters presenting such a world-premiere-heavy program, Molnar responds with a chuckle. “I think it’s really beautiful. I’m proud of the evening. Each of these [choreographers] is committed to the same things we believe in, which is collaboration, where the art is form going, and people who have curiosities and a range for what dance can be. We’re proud to be a creationbased company, and we feel strongly about building new work and giving that life.” W Program 2 runs March 16-18 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 8pm nightly. Tickets $70 and up from balletbc.com.
There are plenty of famous quotations about last laughs – a notable one being “He who laughs last, laughs best” – but there aren’t nearly as many about first laughs. And there should be, because for some people – like Canadian actor Dustin Milligan – a first laugh changes everything. Here’s the story of Milligan’s first laugh. The year: sometime in the early ’90s. The setting: somewhere in Yellowknife. The person who laughed: Milligan can’t remember. The cause of the laugh: see last answer. Okay, Milligan is hazy on the details, but what he will never, ever forget is how he felt the very first time he was funny enough to make someone laugh. “As soon as I got my first laugh, I was always looking to make adults laugh, and then I did school plays and I started getting those laughs on a slightly larger scale,” says Milligan on the phone from LA, where he resides for half the year. He was seven-years-old when he realized that being on stage was inherent in his happiness. “I needed to
Dustin Milligan stars alongside Canadian comedy legends Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara on CBC’s ‘Schitt’s Creek.’ Amanda Crew photo have some kind of superficial validation from a group of strangers looking at me.” He chuckles. “I’m sure at the time I wouldn’t quite be able to articulate it like that, but in retrospect, I have the ability to see it for what it was: I like making people laugh.” Over the last several years, Milligan has had audiences in stitches via a variety of screen projects. With Vancouver actor Aaron Brooks, he co-wrote and costarred in the oddball 1970s “Canuxploitation” film Bad City, which premiered at the 2014 Whistler Film Festival and received nine Leo Award nominations (you can stream it online at BadCityMovie.com). In 2015, Milligan booked a recurring role on CBC’s Schitt’s Creek, which is currently airing its third season on CBC. Schitt’s Creek stars Canadian comedy icons Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara as Johnny and Moira Rose, a once megawealthy couple rebuilding
their lives in the rural town they own; Milligan appears as Ted, the hapless and hopeful vet who falls head over heels for the Roses’ debutante daughter, Alexis. Milligan describes the experience of work with Levy and O’Hara as, 1) a dream, and, 2) an education. “I don’t usually have a lot of scenes with Eugene and Catherine, but we often do lunchtime table reads of the next couple of episodes, and just to be sitting there with them while they’re reading their lines, possibly for the first time, and seeing how instantly funny they make everything, and how they’re never pushing that hard for the comedy – it’s always, always so funny.” Milligan says the Second City alumni use a different tact than the one he employed when he first joined Schitt’s Creek.

Are UTIs the new bed bugs?
PET OF THE WEEK //
Sex with Mish Way
@MyszkaWay
About five years ago, I had a bed-bug scare due to an old “Pantera Live” VCR that an old punk gifted me. (You can read that story on Vice.) When the bed-bug man came over to blast my place with “heat treatment”, he told me that chemicals no longer work. Bed bugs, he said, were becoming immune to the chemicals once used to take their disgusting, bloodsucking lives away. Instead of chemicals, this guy used heat to exterminate. Bed bugs can’t survive over a certain temperature, so you basically just boil your apartment and the bugs along with it. “Soon, they’ll be immune to that!” He told me as he unloaded his equipment. I shuddered. Have you ever had a bed-bug scare? For weeks, I was a c—t hair away from an anxiety induced psychosis. Did you hear? Urinary tract infections are the new bed bugs! Allow me to explain… Have you ever have a UTI? If you have, you understand the pain. When you pee, it feels like tiny, serrated razor blades are flowing out with your urine, slicing and scratching. Even worse, you feel like you have to go every 20 seconds, but then, when you sit down on the toilet, nothing comes out but an empty ache. You never want to stand up straight because your guts are so sore. It’s uncomfortable, painful, awful and, if not treated, the infection can spread into your kidneys or bloodstream resulting in severe illness. Over half of all women will suffer from a UTI in their lifetime, and usually this can be treated
Milligan Continued from page 13 “In my own eagerness to get those laughs while surrounded by so many funny people, often, I’d push too hard. Now I see so clearly, after watching a couple of seasons and being around [Levy and O’Hara], the trick is don’t push, and just let it be funny. I’m a stronger actor because of them and the example that they set every day.” Milligan has worked steadily since arriving in Vancouver straight outta Yellowknife, with little else but the money he’d saved sweeping up popcorn at a movie theatre and a dogged determination to act. “I just started hitting the
iStock photo with drugs. Now, the antibiotics that usually fix the problem are on the fritz. According to a PBS report, E. Coli is the leading cause of UTIs, and this little fucker is becoming immune to the antibiotics doctors use to treat the infection. When a UTI is extremely dire, intravenous injections of the antibiotic colistin are used. PBS notes that there is an emerging resistance to colistin in India and China, probably because “farmers are using the drugs as a growth promotor in livestock.” “Flies at poultry farms in China were loaded with bacteria containing genes for antibiotic resistance, the team discovered. The same team also found E. coli containing mcr-1 – a gene that imparts resistance to colistin, an antibiotic of last resort – in one per cent of hospital patients in two of China’s large cities, neither of which have a history of using colistin to treat humans. They also discovered in the hospitals genes that offer resistance to carbapenems, another class of last-resort antibiotics.” Let me break it down: fly carries bacteria from the country cow to the city girl, where it’s then passed amongst more and more humans. The World Health Organization is working on it.This organization, made up of the world’s 20 richest countries, will discuss paying pharma-
streets and, very luckily, things started happening right away,” recalls Milligan. “It was wild, because I look back now at that decision and I think me, today, I would be terrified to make that decision, but you’re just dumb enough when you’re 18 years old to believe that things are going to work out.” Milligan loves making people laugh, but he’s no stranger to dramatic roles. He’s flexed his serious dramatic chops on 90210, Motive, Supernatural, and on CBC’s WWII spy thriller series X Company, where he appeared as Tom Cummings, a charismatic ad man turned field agent who (spoiler alert!) suffered a fatal fall from the cliffs of Dieppe at the end of season two. Milligan will soon be back in Vancouver to film the sec-

ceutical companies a handsome sum to persuade them to invest in an otherwise unprofitable new antibiotic. It’s nice to know that no one cares about E.Coli immunity; meanwhile, according to American newsweekly US News, the assholes creating fentanyl over at Insys Therapeutics are busy toiling away on a synthetic form of THC to stop the legalization of cannabis. Chances are that if you are a woman reading this you have had what is called a “functioning UTI”, which means that it is treatable by the antibiotics. However, when the antibiotics fail, and the infection makes its way through the body, it can become fatal. UTIs that are resistant to one or more types of antibiotic are becoming more and more common. Although we may not be at risk here in Canada, children in the developing countries are. According to a research paper published by WHO, it’s a growing problem. When my little sister was just a kid she got really bad UTIs. I remember her being five years old and crying on the toilet. It was hard to explain it to her then, but truly scary to be explaining it now. W

Playful Coco is looking for an owner who can help her build confidence. Contributed photo
Adopteez: Finding Coco a forever home NOA NICHOL @adopteezpleez
The folks at Vancouver’s HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society may not know much about Coco, but they all agree she’s highly deserving of a second chance. “She was picked up as a stray and taken to Surrey Animal Resource Centre,” says HugABull foster co-ordinator Christine Crunican. “When staff members there saw how poorly she was doing in the kennel, they gave us a call.” Back at HugABull HQ, volunteers went about trying to determine Coco’s age and breed based on the minimal information they had. “She’s young, around two, and acts very much like a puppy, with a whole lot of energy to burn – she could play ball for hours, given the chance. Don’t let some of her photos fool you – she definitely isn’t a couch-potato dog!” Crunican laughs. “We also think she’s some sort of Pitbull mix. She’s got an adorably long snout, but her other characteristics,
like her beautiful brindle colour and white markings, are quite typically Pit.” Given her unstructured past and high-energy nature, Coco’s wish is to be matched with an adopter who can provide her not only with a good physical outlet, but plenty of mental stimulation as well. “We’ve found that she is dog-reactive when on leash, and will lunge and bark at other dogs out of frustration,” Crunican explains, adding that, when given the chance to meet other canines properly, Coco is highly social and eager to play. “Her house manners also need improvement, in terms of greeting people and staying off the furniture, so we’re looking for someone who is willing and able to take time to work with her on these things. She is, however, fully crate trained.” Something else that Coco needs help with is her confidence. “Our guess is that she was a backyard dog and that someone may have physically struck her at some point, which has left her with
some residual anxiety,” says Crunican. “She needs to learn that not everything is bad and not to be so fearful.” Happily, she adds, training will likely not be too difficult, as Coco is very food motivated and fond of treats. She also loves her people fiercely, and promises to be a loyal companion to whomever offers her a home. “She’s a super-happy girl with lots of love to give,” says Crunican. “Cats or other small animals in the same household won’t work, but she may get along with another nice dog. It would be lovely to see her out of the city, in a house with a yard where she can burn off steam, although this isn’t entirely necessary. All Coco really needs is someone who is physically active, who can commit to working with her on her manners, so as to build that lifelong bond.” • Does Coco sound like the dog of your dreams? More information about her and the adoption process can be found on HugABull’s website, at hugabull. com. W
Does your pooch have Shakespearean flair? VERONNICA MACKILLOP @vamackillop
Bard on the Beach is searching for the perfect thespian hound to act in its staging of The Two Gentlemen of Verona. In a press release Monday, the Bard team explained that they have filled all the roles but one for their upcoming staging of the early romantic Shakespearean comedy this summer: the role of the servant Launce’s beloved dog, Crab. Think your pooch might have the chops? “I’m looking for either a large, calm dog that will be happy to lie still, regardless of the surrounding distractions, or a perkier dog that will respond to Launce when encouraged and maybe even do a trick or two,” Bard artistic associate Scott
Bellis said. “Either way, the dog has to be well-behaved, and absolutely able to keep his or her composure when surrounded by bright lights and audience noise,” Bellis said. “No [other] special skills, or experience with Shakespeare, is required!” Auditions for the role are March 31. If you think your dog could star on the Howard Family Stage for four months this summer, the application deadline is March 15. Owners must fill out an online form, and include a photo of the dog they are hoping to audition. A short video showing how the dog moves and responds to instructions is encouraged. Vancouver dog trainer and agent Georgina Bradley, owner of Vancouver’s Dogstars, will be at the auditions to help the team
decide who should play Crab. Shakespeare’s play never mentioned what kind of dog Crab was, so a diverse range of dogs can audition for the role, according to Bellis. Other adaptations of the play have used a puppet, a large stuffed animal, or even a person to represent Crab, but Bard on the Beach said they want to cast a real dog to play the role authentically. W

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny
Horoscopes as provided by WE Editorial
As soon as you can, sneak away to a private place where you can be alone – preferably to a comfy sanctuary where you can indulge in eccentric behaviour without being seen or heard or judged. When you get there, launch into an extended session of moaning and complaining. I mean, do it out loud. Wail and whine and whisper about everything that’s making you sad and puzzled and crazy. For best results, leap into the air and wave your ¡ ½ « ¡ y ¡ ~ y while drooling and messing up your hair. Breathe extra deeply. And all the while, let your pungent emotions and poignant ¡ ¡ | w u y u y w ¡ ½ l y u y ~ ¡ lies on the other side.
“I’ve always belonged to what isn’t where I am and to what I could never be,” wrote Portuguese w ¡ g ¡ z»´´´ »³¹·r½ ® ¡ w¡ his prerogative, of course. Or maybe it was a fervent desire of his, and it came true. I bring his x u y ¡ ¨ ®¡y y ¨ ¡y I believe your mandate is just the opposite, at least for the next few weeks: You must belong to what is where you are. You must belong to what you will always be.
Nothing is ever as simple as it may seem. ® ¡ ¡ w¡u ¡ y y ½ ® x ¡ u ¡x ¡ ¡x ¡ ½ According to my astrological analysis, you’ll prove the latter truth in the coming weeks. On one hand, you will be closer than you’ve been in many moons to your ultimate sources of meaning and motivation. On the other hand, you sure as hell had better take advantage of this good fortune. You can’t ¡ u ¡ y ¡ w¡ and accepting the responsibilities that come with the opportunities.
Seek intimacy with experiences that are dewy and slippery and succulent. Make sure you get more than your fair share of w ¡ | w ¡ ¨ cascading streams and misty rain, arousing drinks and sumptuous sauces, warm baths and purifying saunas, skin moisturizers and lustrous massages, the milk of human kindness and the buttery release of deep v ¡ ¡u x ¡ ¡ ¡ yourself baptism that frees you from at least some of your regrets. Don’t stay thirsty, my undulating friend. Quench your need to be very, very wet. Gush and spill. Be gushed and spilled on.
« y u y x ¡ ³³£ n ¨ experiences and realizations that arrive in the coming weeks could be important in that project. A window to longevity will open, giving you a chance to gather clues about actions you can take and meditations you can do to remain vital for ten decades. I hope u y y ¡ y ¨ w ¡ ¡ y ~ y u½ If you’d like to be deeply receptive to the secrets of a long life, you must be able to see with innocent, curious eyes. Playfulness is not just a winsome quality in this quest; it’s an essential asset.
You’re ripe. You’re delectable. Your intelligence is especially sexy. I think it’s time to unveil the premium version of your y ½ ® ¡ ¨ x w ¡ w | ¡ ¡ ½ ® u w |¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ½ y ¨ | u y ¡ ~ w y ½ ® u u y x u u½ n ¡ signs of reciprocation from the other party, smooth your hair or pat your clothes. Fondle nearby objects like a wine glass or your keys. And this is very important: Listen raptly to the person you’re wooing. P.S.: If you already have a steady partner, use these techniques ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡{u ¡ ¡w x ¡ ½
Let’s talk about a compassionate version of u½ ® x w ¡ ¡ don’t steal valuable things you love. Rather, u y u y ¡ y¡ u y ¡ reluctant to let go of. For example, the spirit of a beloved ancestor may sweep into your ¡ ¡ ¡ u ¡ y that has been damaging you in ways you’ve become comfortable with. A bandit angel might sneak into your imagination and burglarize the debilitating beliefs and psychological crutches you cling to as if they were bars of gold. Are you ~ x £ and you shall receive.
Evolved Scorpios don’t fantasize about bad things happening to their competitors ¡ ¡ x ¡ ½ ® u w smouldering desires to torment anyone who ¡ x w ¡ u w¡ ½ ® u ¡u¨ w x ¨ v y ¡ x ®h® k iiip ©©knip j ° nk ¯¯ ¬n ®h°ª x those who won’t acknowledge them as golden gods or golden goddesses. But even then, they don’t indulge in the deeply counterproductive emotion of hatred. Instead, they sublimate their ferocity into a drive to keep honing their ¡ ½ { ¡ ¨ ¡ ¡ ¡ way to accomplish something even better than x § y y ~ ¡ ½ Please keep these thoughts close to your heart in the coming weeks.
® ¡ y ¡ ¡ y w ¨ w j¡ ky z»¸´¹ »·¸¶r¨ ¡ x y ¡ u w ¡ the stranglehold of the Catholic Church on the European imagination. I bring this up, Sagittarius, because you’re entering a phase when you need the kind of uprising that’s best incited by music. So I invite you to gather the tunes that have inspired you over the years, and ¡ y ¡ ¡ ½ ® intently, curiously, and creatively as you feed your intention to initiate constructive mutation. It’s time to overthrow anything about your status quo that is jaded, lazy, sterile, or apathetic.
“Either you learn to live with paradox and ambiguity or you’ll be six years old for the rest of your life,” says author Anne Lamott. How ¡ u y w ¡ ¨ ¡ £ ¯ ¡ £ n u y w y x more advanced teachings about paradox and ambiguity – as well as conundrums, incongruity, and anomalies – there will be plenty of chances in the coming weeks. Be ¡ ¤ ° w i g t winning physicist Niels Bohr: “How wonderful that we have met with a paradox. Now we have some hope of making progress.”
Lichen is a hardy form of life that by some estimates covers six per cent of the earth’s surface. It thrives in arctic tundra and rainforests, on tree bark and rock surfaces, on walls and toxic slag heaps, from sea level to ¡ x ½ ® y is symbiosis. Fungi and algae band together z y ¡ ¡ ¡r ¡ ¡ blended entity; two very dissimilar organisms forge an intricate relationship that comprises a third organism. I propose that you regard lichen as your spirit ally in the coming weeks, Aquarius. You’re primed for some sterling symbioses.
If you normally wear adornments and accessories ¡ ~ y ¨ n x u y for the next two weeks. Instead, try out an y ¨ w ¡ u y w ¡ u y approach to your appearance. If, on the other hand, you don’t normally wear adornments and ¡ ¡ ~ y ¨ n y ¡ u y to embrace such possibilities in a spirit of fun and enthusiasm. Now you may inquire: How can these contradictory suggestions both apply to the g £ ® ¡ w § ® ¡ w mandate behind it all – namely, to tinker and experiment with the ways you present yourself… to play around with strategies for translating your inner depths into outer expression.
