REVIEW OF A REVIEW
Re:“Tako’s KoreanMexican fusion fizzles,” May 4, 2017 The Westender was my goto weekly for a snapshot of city life. Dining gems were often found in the restaurant section; reviews fair, never mean-spirited. Why would they be? [Last week,] Anya chose mean-spirited. Her review told people to go elsewhere
(WTF?) – Fresh Slice (twice). Her words felt more like those of an internet troll than food aficionado. She was so traumatized by her chicken taco, suggesting “the chicken seized in fright”... because I think they knew Anya was about to judge them. She called the kimchi “a science experiment”; a burrito “considerably less
offensive”; and, she “took one for the team” by trying poutine. What bloody team was she talking about? I took one for the team by reading her review. It reeked of cattiness; it was considerably offensive. Who was she writing it for? Anya even slammed the name: “Taqueria Koreano (cue the eyrolls).” WEIRD.
Tako is a one-off, not a FAST-FOOD GIANT. Unlike the giants, unfavourable reviews can harm small businesses. Maybe cattiness was the wrong word? I’ve been to Tako with my friend J. Lee (Korean). We thoroughly enjoyed it! Try Tako! If you don’t like Tako, you can walk across the lane and line up to finedine at the mom-and-pop Costco “food” counter. –LindsayWincherauk I don’t know what bug was up Anya’s butt last week, but I’ve eaten at Tako once or twice and didn’t think it was awful at all. Recalling her scathing Gringo review from a few years ago, maybe tacos just aren’t her thing? –Christine
CYCLING SIGHT
Due to working in different places, I have to drive around Greater Vancouver quite a lot. A few days ago, I saw something I have very rarely seen during recent months. I actually saw a cyclist stop at a red traffic light, and then wait until the light turned to green before proceeding. Hallelujah! –Rob, SouthVancouver

How design could shape the future of housing in Vancouver Design plays an important role in how cities address housing affordability concerns SARAH RIPPLINGER @sarahripplinger
The design community could be a key player in finding a solution toVancouver’s housing affordability crisis, says Jane Cox, co-owner of Cause+Affect brand consultancy with her husband Steven. Cox has researched and experienced design around the globe – from Copenhagen to Auckland and London – and believes there is a lot of potential withinVancouver’s design community to take lessons learned and offer new and innovative approaches to solving one of our city’s biggest challenges. “Vancouver is kind of on the cusp, because it’s becoming a big city and it’s facing big city problems like affordability and housing.” Designers, she adds, can help plan and design cities that meet the needs of current and future residents. Cox and Jennifer Cutbill launched Vancouver Design Week, which takes place this May 12-14 under the temporary new name of Vancouver Design Week(end), in 2014 to draw attention to Vancouver’s design community. The volunteer-run non-profit enterprise shines a spotlight on local designers and gives residents opportunities to connect with and learn about design, including through a series of open houses and talks. Mark Busse, director of creativity and engagement at HCMA Architecture + Design, which will be hosting the Vancouver Design Week(end) launch party on May 12,
defines the design community as an interdisciplinary mix of people who solve problems: from architects to graphic, fashion, food and interior designers. “Design is a concept of making things last longer, feel better, and creating an environment where happy collisions, and the desire to linger and feel welcome and safe, [can happen].” One of Cox’s concerns when it comes to growing a vibrant design community in Vancouver is that the high cost of living is making it difficult for her firm to recruit and retain staff, who often struggle to secure affordable housing within a reasonable commute to her Gastown office. “The creative workforce is the first to leave the city when it’s not affordable,” she says. “We [at Cause+Affect] spend lots of our time speaking with our staff about places to live and looking for apartments for our staff.” It’s also a challenge that Cox believes the design community can be a leader in solving. She points to the Nightingale Model, conceived by Australian architect Jeremy McLeod, that applies the principles of affordability, transparency, sustainability, deliberate design and community contributions to create affordable housing stock. For example,The Commons housing complex in Melbourne, Australia, cut out certain amenities, such as air conditioning and parking, to keep unit prices low. In Vancouver, Inform Interiors co-owner Nancy Bendtsen, believes developing affordable and sustainable housing will require long-term planning from politicians and design teams. “You plan really well, you invest really well in your city,”
Vancouver Design Week(end) co-founder Jane Cox. Contributed photo
and even though you might not see the payoff for decades, Bendtsen says, “man, when you do, it’s enormous.” Designers, she adds, can “help educate everybody in this. I think that’s our role: design for a better world.” • See the list ofVancouver DesignWeek(end) events at vancouverdesignwk.com W

Joan McGregor has watched two of the Maple Leaf Bakery staff grow up. Since moving to the area in 2001, the 79-year-old West End resident visited the bakery, which sells fresh bread, cakes, muffins and other pastries, on a daily basis. “I really truly will miss them,” says McGregor. “They’re like family to me.” Maple Leaf Bakery, on Davie Street near Bute Street, will soon close its doors, following in the steps of a number of West End businesses as of late, including Dover Arms Pub, West Valley Market, Hapa Izakaya on Robson Street at Nicola Street and the Upper Deck (formerly Speakeasy) restaurant that sits across the street from Maple Leaf Bakery. The Tam family purchased the bakery in 1988 after co-owner Raymond Tam, 58, attended culinary classes at Vancouver Community College and apprenticed in local bakeries. Five years ago, the family was shocked when their property lease jumped up by 30 percent. To make ends meet, they reopened the shop on Sundays. Raymond often works seven days a week, 12 hours per day, and his co-owner and wife Lisa, 61, is often at the shop six days a week. With their lease coming due again this year, Stephen Tam, 30, says his parents didn’t even bother asking what the new rate would be before deciding to shut their doors. (Westender was unable to reach the owner of the
Maple Leaf Bakery on Davie offers a variety of fresh baked goods, including muffins, cakes and spinach and meat pies. Contributed photo property for comment by press time.) “It seems like on Davie Street, if you don’t serve alcohol and if you’re not a chain, it’s really hard to keep up with the rents that they’re asking for today,” says Tam. “There’s only so much you can increase your prices, and then everything just goes to rent.” Tam adds that, with rising costs and the long hours he and his family put into running the bakery, “It’s almost like we’re volunteering, but not for a cause.” Instead, the family has decided to go into the wholesale business, relocating to a yet-to-be-determined location where they will continue to bake, but will no longer run the shop. “Ideally, we would like to have someone take over and maybe continue it as a bakery and know that our customer base will be well taken care of,” says Tam who, along with his sister, was one of the staff members whom McGregor watched growing up. “A lot of our customers are regulars. We see them every day and we know them
on a first-name basis.” The Tams plan to shut down sometime this summer, closing a chapter in their lives that leaves Tam with mixed emotions. “I’m sad in a sense that we’ve been there for so long,” says Tam. “We know a lot of people in the neighbourhood, but I’m happy that my parents won’t have to work as long and as hard.” The closing of the Maple Leaf Bakery storefront is part of a larger shift in the neighbhourhood – and the retail sector in general – in which many small family-run businesses are being replaced by larger chains and condos. McGregor notes that, above and beyond the joy of getting fresh baked goods that she once routinely made herself, there is also a sense of community in the shop where customers and staff would help out with change and where you could count on seeing a familiar face. “We used to have four bakeries out here and now we only have the Cobs and Maple Leaf Bakery left,” McGregor says with a sigh. “It makes you wonder where to go.” W

Heels a point of controversy for STRUT VERONNICA MACKILLOP @vamackillop
From high fashion to the restaurant floor, high heels are an enduring symbol in North American society. For some, high heels are a personal choice – a frivolous accessory to be worn at will. For others, the shoes are viewed as a sign of oppression, or a step backwards in society. But, for a growing group of Vancouverites, high heels are also a powerful symbol of an ongoing and difficult personal journey. The Foundation of Hope (FOH) is an organization that raises money for services and groups that help LGBTQ refugees arriving in Vancouver. As they get ready for their third annual walk-a-thon fundraiser, aptly called STRUT, on June 3, conversations about the controversy of using high heels as the symbol of the walk are circulating. Each year, the organization encourages, but does not require, participants to wear heels to the event, to represent the painful journey that LGBTQ refugees face when fleeing their countries
and coming to Vancouver. According to the organizers, it also represents a resistance of gender norms, and a celebration of our freedoms here in Canada. Chad Walters, board director of FOH, said that using high heels as a symbol creates important conversations about misogyny, gender perception, and internalized homophobia. “We’ve had comments from [people] who push back on the idea of wearing heels, and that alone is exactly why we need to maintain it, because it causes conversations, and it causes retrospection and reflection, and it unpacks really important things that are secretly oppressing us today,” Walters said. According to Walters, people opposed to the concept highlight the oppression and sexualization of women commonly associated with high heels, and the destabilization of the perception of masculinity that gay men have fought so hard for. BC’s restaurant industry was recently at the centre of the high-heel controversy, when a private members bill was introduced in an effort to prohibit employers from
requiring workers to wear heels on the job. Human rights laws in Canada already make it illegal for employers to have gender-specific dress codes; however, high heels are implicitly expected of female wait staff in many popular dining establishments provincially, and nationwide, and the law is largely unenforced. The bill did not have a chance to be passed before legislature was adjourned for the May 9 election, but it carried the support of Premier Christy Clark, and Labour Minister Shirley Bond. Still, the pressure to wear heels in order to makes tips or look more “professional”
persists, and many employers outside the restaurant industry also expect their female employees to wear heels. Marley L., who works as a stripper in the Lower Mainland, said that high heels are required at her job no matter what, even though they can cause safety issues. “It’s not allowed at my club to wear anything other than heels, because that’s what they think is sexy. It makes me more nervous for my stages because it’s easier to trip in them,” she said. “It’s unfair and I hope it changes in the future.” In an ideal world, she said, she would be able to wear
sneakers to work and still make tips and be considered sexy. “I wish it was optional because I’m not good at walking in them and I’d honestly feel sexier with a pair of converse on.” With the one-mile walka-thon approaching, Chad Walters wants people to know that high heels are absolutely not required to participate. People are encouraged to wear fun footwear, or whatever they feel comfortable in. An LGBTQ refugee we spoke to, who uses Foundation of Hope resources and wishes to remain anonymous, said that when he first moved to Vancouver from Lebanon, the foundation’s “I believe” program, which meets monthly, helped him find a community and feel safe. “Moving from your country to here is hard, so being with people who are in the same situation as you helps a lot,” he said. He thinks that high heels are a powerful symbol for STRUT. “For people who aren’t refugees, or LGBT, it sounds a little bit maybe weird; but in fact, for a person like me, this is a huge thing. Organizations like the FOH give me great re-
lief,” he said. “Walking a mile in high heels is very difficult, so it gives you some idea of how it is to be an LGBT person in countries where LGBT people are not welcome and forced to leave.” During a speech Walters gave at Converge Con, a gathering about sexuality, relationships and activism that took place April 7-9, he discussed STRUT’s “highheel heat” and weighed in on using the shoes as a symbol. “Being [LGBTQ] in persecutory nations is painful, challenging and sometimes even deadly. Stepping outside one’s socially conscripted gender roles can really make you feel psychologically uncomfortable […] which is what a false life of heterosexuality and forced cisgenderism feels like. “We’re walking together because here we are in this country, comfortable, privileged, we can love who we want to love,” he said. “So let’s come together and walk for those that don’t have that right.” • STRUTVancouver kicks off June 3 at noon at Sunset Beach. To register, head to strutvancouver.ca W

@GrantLawrence
If you’ve been a reader of the Westender for any length of time, chances are you’ve noticed his real estate advertisements. They’re full colour, they feature his name and face prominently, and such turns of phrase as “rarely available!”, “unbelievable but true!”, “like living in a tree house!”, and my favourite, “whisper-quiet”. Sometimes, the ads feature shout-outs and tributes to family members, or photos of his cats, or his all-time favourite musician, Aretha Franklin. He claims he was even the first to publically point the finger, in his ad, at the infamous Beach Avenue tree poisoner of 2004, who was trying to increase the value of her suite by killing the trees that blocked the view. She eventually paid the park board $50,000 to replace the trees. His ad also features the bold statement: “I work nowhere but the West End, and
no one knows it better.” Meet Rob Joyce,West End real estate agent. Joyce has published his colourful, quirky, and occasionally crime-crusading real estate ads in the Westender every week for a record 27 years. He’s never missed an issue. Long before I was a writer for the Westender, I was a reader, and Rob Joyce’s audacious real estate ads fascinated me, percolating into a years-long mix of curiosity and admiration. I’ll admit to outright stealing his loquacious ad copy for my own Craig’s List ads: “RARELY AVAILABLE,WHISPER-QUIET… TOASTER OVEN!”Works (almost) every time. So who IS this guy? When the editor of this paper told me that we were doing a West End-focused issue, I knew it was my chance to find out. “I’m from Corner Brook, Newfoundland,” says Joyce in a calm tone over the phone in a recent interview. “In the 1970s, a friend of mine moved out to Vancouver and sent a letter back. He described it as a paradise. I arrived on January 4th, 1975. Even in the winter, it was beautiful. The people were
so friendly. The ’70s was a golden age for Vancouver, which back then was a small town wrapped up in a big city. I moved to the West End and I’ve never lived anywhere else.” Before his real estate career, Joyce was a West End community activist, involving himself in the gay liberation movement, the NDP, and welfare action rights. “I’ve always been out,” he says, referring to his sexuality. Joyce’s day job in the early ’80s was a job counselor for the young prostitutes who used to line Davie Street between Thurlow and Burrard. “I’d try to get them off the street and into stable employment,” Joyce remembers proudly. Later, Joyce was the vicepresident of the West End Community Centre. He says he helped change the centre’s policy, which opened the doors to allow street people and the mentally ill use of the facilities, and he brought in the Food Bank. In the late 1980s, Joyce created Q Magazine for the gay community, which lasted years. Then came real estate. Joyce recalls needing to be convinced to attend a real es-

tate seminar at the insistence of Roger Ross, who later became his business partner. “I wanted nothing to do with it,” states Joyce. “I didn’t want to be a realtor, I didn’t respect those people.” Nonetheless, the course instructor liked Joyce’s blunt honesty and encouraged him to get his licence. Joyce sold seven West End condos in his first three months. His secret? He heavily featured ocean views in the ads. Almost three decades later, he still does. One of Joyce’s favourite phrases is “blue
water”. “If there’s a view, buyers need to see blue water. They’ll spend three minutes looking at a suite but hours looking at online photos, and if there’s a view of blue water, that sticks. The West End is one of the most beautiful places in the world to live.” He’s also never quite seen a condo market like 2017. “It’s off the charts,” he states, almost with a sigh. “The off-shore buyers are snapping up any suite they can buy and rent out. There’s lineups and multiple offers for every listing.”
Joyce has advice for both West End sellers and buyers: “If you’re selling, you better have a new place already lined up, otherwise you can’t get back into the market. If you’re buying, don’t wait, just buy, because prices keep going up.” Oh, and those Aretha Franklin mentions in the ads? “I’ve seen her over 20 times and met her backstage. I mention her birthday in my ad every year. It shows who I am and what I like. People like personality.” And blue water. W

Get these West End restos on your radar
Two new undersung spots that deserve your attention Anya Levykh Nosh
@FoodgirlFriday The West End has always been home to some of the city’s best casual dining, especially when you’re talking about ramen, sushi and hot pot. But, those aren’t the only genres of which to take advantage, as these two recent additions to the neighbourhood prove.
RITUAL
Opened last spring on Denman Street, this firstownership venture from chef Nevada Cope is based on her own childhood growing up in Abbotsford’s farm region. Comfort food rooted in the farm-to-table concept is the focus here, and shows itself in the daily brunch menu. A simple brunch skillet ($17) boasts crimini mushrooms, double-cooked truffle potatoes, cilantro yogurt, and
Left: Forkhill House Irish Bistro on Alberni (Dan Toulgoet photo). Right: Ritual’s charred cauliflower and tahini (Contributed). changed-daily braised meat. On one visit, this was short rib, tender and falling apart at the touch of my fork. The menu also boasts some more exotic flavours, based on what Cope feels like cooking. A savoury breakfast pancake ($17) flecked with green onion is topped with succulent pulled pork, incredibly juicy and not at all greasy, as well
as crispy shallots, a runny soy egg, and a drizzle of pineapple miso sauce. Don’t miss the lunch and dinner menus, especially dishes like the chickpea lamb merguez ($14) and the vegetarian escalivada ($14), a lush concoction of chilled whipped potatoes, similar to Peruvian causa, topped with roasted eggplant, bell pepper, and an
anchovy dressing. ritualvancouver.com
FORKHILL HOUSE IRISH BISTRO
When you think of Irish cuisine, it’s probably dishes of colcannon and various iterations of potato that come to mind, but, like contemporary Canadian cuisine, there’s more here
than just the Irish version of bangers and mash. Forkhill, run by owners and husband-and-wife team Jeffrey and Jaime Lenz, opened a couple months ago in the old Fat Badger (and prior to that, Le Gavroche) space on Alberni Street. The couple brought in Tannis Smith as executive chef and worked with her to create a
menu that covers comfort classics like Scotch eggs, but also goes into more exotic territory, reflecting the influence of everything from Italian and French to Moroccan and Portuguese cuisines. Ireland is a coastal country that has a climate that is relatively similar to Canada’s West Coast, so no surprise that some similarities in ingredients can be found. And, yes, that Scotch egg ($9), wrapped in a parmesan-crusted fennel sausage and perfectly runny, is fantastic, especially when paired with the spicy cilantro-garlic pesto that is dolloped on the plate. While the “Yorkies” ($5) are excellent, thanks to the very good, crispy and buttery bowls that house corned beef with sauerkraut and horseradish cream, I would suggest trying the more adventurous “Birdies” ($11), a rosemaryinfused pastry encasing duck confit and mushroom duxelles with an orangechilli chocolate mousse. If the latter makes you pause, don’t worry, it sounds odd, but it works, in the way of a slightly more aromatic mole. forkhillhouse.com W

In 1986, John Clerides and his father Andy answered an ad in the newspaper and bought a licence for a wine store from the Mark Anthony Wine Group. With 1,100 square feet to play with, they opened the doors to Marquis Wine Cellars, carrying wine from one British Columbia winery: Mission Hill.Today, the independent wine store occupies 10,000 square feet and offers a choice of more than 2,000 wines from around the world. Establishing itself in the West End was a no-brainer: the family owned the south side of the 1000 block between Burrard and Thurlow streets. “We knew the West End, as my Dad had been in business there since 1958,” says Clerides. He describes the area as a true neighbourhood. “There is a good community feel to it. People care about the businesses there.” The shop serves a dual purpose. On the one hand, it has been built as a destination spot to draw customers into the West End, carrying collectable, high-end wine – many of which are exclusive to Marquis Wine Cellars. However, the shop also caters to the neighbourhood, providing residents with their daily glass. “If the local community didn’t

CRAFT BEER
Brew Kid(s) on the Block: West Kootenay edition Robert Mangelsdorf The Growler
@TheGrowlerBC
The West Kootenay region has long been a tourist destination thanks to its spectacular natural setting and world-class ski resorts. And, despite being smack dab in the middle of nowhere, it somehow manages to feel both vibrant and culturally progressive. The West Kootenays’ unique history is likely the reason. Thanks to the mining industry and the waves of American draft dodgers that moved there in the ’60s and ’70s, the area is simultaneously blue collar and hippie green. Perhaps, then, it should come as no surprise that the West Kootenays are going crazy for craft beer. Nelson, a town of less than 10,000 people, is now home to four breweries (all within walking distance). Breweries have popped up in Rossland and Trail, and even tiny Kaslo has one in the works. This isn’t a new phenomenon, either. Nelson Brewing Company has been making award-winning craft beers since 1991, and has been allorganic since 2006. In recent months, two new craft breweries have opened – Backroads Brewing Company in Nelson and Trail Beer Refinery in Trail – and they are helping to make the case that the West Kootenays region is a legit beer destination. I talked to Brent Malysh of Backroads Brewing Company and Mike Konklin of Trail Beer Refinery about what it’s like brewing in paradise. The Growler: First off, congrats on opening! Tell me a bit about the process that led you to where you are now. Brent Malysh: It’s been a whirl-wind of an opening for sure. For me personally, it’s been just shy of a two-year process from when I began researching the market in earnest to opening the doors. The project started as part of my commerce degree from Royal Roads University. My final term project was to write an investor-ready business plan. So, about six months
researching and writing the plan, six more months to find the right building and find business partners/financing, and then about nine months to design, construct, and get our approvals in place. We started brewing in February and opened on March 24.
Mike Konkin: This project has been incredible. You would not believe that [the process] from idea to full-scale production brewery and awesome taproom happened in less than a year. This included a full reno of an old Sears building, getting permits, building a business plan and gathering the “dream team” of partners. We had the vision to make a special place for the residents of Trail. During one of our first meetings we made our mission/vision statement to Build a brewery that makes Trail proud. I think we have done it. Why beer? What got you interested in craft beer enough to open your own brewery? Malysh: I’ve always been fascinated by beer; especially the branding and marketing of it. My previous career was in ski resort management, and the après-ski part of my job always focused around beer. In the early 2000s I lived in Switzerland, working in the ski industry, and had the opportunity to visit many breweries throughout Germany, the Czech Republic and Belgium. But what really cemented it was seeing a couple small brewpubs in my favourite European ski towns and realizing that it was totally possible to be part of both the ski industry and the brewing industry.
broad range; so far we’ve brewed things like Munich helles, smoked Baltic porter, IPA, saison, Belgain IPA, so really all over the map. This summer, we’re looking at ideas like fruit wits and Czech-style lager. Konklin: Our flagship beers are our Trail Ale, an easydrinking amber ale with a medium-to-high maltiness and a medium-to-low caramel character, and our Silver City Lager, an American pale lager that is light in body and crisp and refreshing.Think blue-collar craft. Another hit has been our Silver City Ice, which was a mistake that proved to be game changing for us.We brewed our first lager batch and had a misstep with our fermenter temperature control, and we ended up freezing about 2,000 litres of beer. The good news was the beer that was left was super smooth and still light. The ABV shot up from 5% to 7%, but the result is great. We are also intending to experiment with other styles over the next year. Konklin: The beer industry in BC has exploded in the last few years and, after touring some amazing places around the province, we figured we could make a brewery “Trail” style, meaning; industrial, blue collar and really classy. We want to bring a great craft beer experience to our local residents and hope that they fully embrace our high quality product. What beers will you be offering? Malysh: We’ve got a pretty

The gin is sky blue – that’s right, blue – and it has a delicate floral aroma. Add a little tonic water, though, and it magically turns a beautiful royal purple. “It’s spectacular, isn’t it? It goes from that nice blue, then you pour the tonic in there, it swirls around, and you get that nice pink colour,” says Peter Hunt, president ofVictoria Distillers. “It’s certainly something fun for bartenders and mixologists to play with.” It certainly is, especially for the bartenders atVictoria’s Fairmont Empress Hotel, who worked withVictoria Distillers to develop the hotel’s new namesake gin. It officially launches this week ($46.99) and will be available at BC Liquor Stores. But the Empress gin is just one of the exciting things happening atVictoria’s grande dame these days. The 109-year-old hotel is undergoing a multi-milliondollar makeover that has had traditionalists bemoaning the closure of the Bengal Lounge,
The new Empress gin from Victoria Distillers, alongside a gin and tonic at the new Q Bar at the Fairmont Hotel Empress in Victoria, BC. Victoria Distillers photo the removal of a century’s worth of ivy, and the loss of a pair of weeping sequoias. A little ironically, removing all those layers of history has actually revealed the heritage character of the property – “renewed heritage” is what Q at the Empress’ general manager, Albert Kirby, calls it – and nowhere is that more true than in the new Q Bar. Located in what used to be the Harbour Room, it is a space filled with light that emphasizes exquisite architectural details that were once
lost in the murk of dark, heavy Victoriana. An elegant white horseshoe bar floats in the centre of the room, surrounded by bar stools where exhausted tourists pause to refresh after a tough day of shopping along Government Street. Sofas and banquettes line the walls, chic little oases for lounging, dallying or sharing gossip about doings at the BC Parliament Buildings around the corner. QueenVictoria, re-imagined in a quartet of colourfully bold oversized portraits, gazes resignedly over the antics of her subjects. The décor is pretty swell. But it’s what the bar is serving that’s really exciting here. “Fairmont’s got this ‘classics perfected’ program, and this is the Pacific Northwest spin on that,” Kirby says. “All the cocktails have a classic base, but made with local ingredients.” For instance, there’s the 150 Royale, made with Sherignham gin, Odd Society crème de cassis and Sea Cider. Or the Northwest Collins, with its house-made fir bitters. Or the wide range of gin and tonics – gin is, not surprisingly, a big deal here, being the favourite tipple of both the old Queen and the current one.
But the star of the bar program is the Empress 1908 cocktail – and now the Empress gin. “In 2008, they created the 1908, a cocktail that represented the hotel’s 100-year anniversary. With the renewed heritage, we thought we’d have a renewed 1908,” Kirby says. The original drink featured vodka infused with Empress Blend tea; for the new cocktail, one of the bartenders created an infusion of both tea and fair-trade butterfly pea flowers that made for a drink of appropriately royal hue. The butterfly pea plant is a vining flower that grows widely inThailand and Burma. Aside from its vivid indigo hue, what makes it unique is its highly sensitive pH balance:The slightest change in acidity transforms it from sky blue to purple to magenta. Meanwhile,Victoria Distillers had been talking to the hotel about creating a bespoke gin. It only made sense to adapt the bar’s floral infusion on a much grander scale. The gin is made with a bold bouquet of botanicals, including ginger, coriander, rose, cinnamon, Empress Blend tea and, of course, juniper. “It’s got more juniper than theVictoria gin. And instead of lemon and orange, we use grapefruit,” Hunt says. W

My mother is, of course, my greatest hero and, I’m happy to say, a wine lover. I always enjoy sharing a glass with her.You can bet I’ll be toasting her this coming Sunday. In honour of Mother’s Day, I thought I would call out some of my favourite female winemakers who are raising families as well as wines.Their wares also make great gifts for your wine-drinking Moms.
MARIA ELENA JIMENEZ AND MARTA CASAS
Parés Baltà, Catalunya, Spain Both Maria Elena and Marta married into the Cusiné family who established Parés Baltà. Trained oenologists, the sisters-in-law are responsible for making the estate’s wines. I’ve never actually met either of these ladies, both of whom also have two kids. However, I’ve enjoyed a lot of their wine and met their husbands, who travel around the globe extolling the virtues of their wines and wives.

Catherine & Pierre Breton, Loire Valley, France Catherine and Pierre’s small domain has become a reference for Cabernet Franc in the Loire Valley. While Pierre is the chief winemaker, in 2002 Catherine started crafting wine under the “Dilettante” label. For a ‘dabbler’, she’s making some pretty darn good wines, which her daughter helps promote. n/v Dilettante • Brut, Vouvray AOC France • $40-44 private wine stores (Kitsilano Wine Cellar, Marquis Wine Cellars, Liberty Wine Merchants) A sparkling Chenin Blanc made in the traditional method, Dilettante is dry, pretty, and light on its feet.

ORNELLA CORREGGIA
Matteo Correggia, Roero, Italy Although Ornella isn’t actually the winemaker, she’s the glue that has kept this winery together. After losing her husband Matteo suddenly at a tragically young age, she carried on his vision of bringing renown to Piemonte’s Roero denomination. She also raised two of the loveliest children, who now work alongside her. The eldest, Giovanni, has recently taken on the winemaking. I have as much affection for this family as I do the wines. 2013 Matteo Correggia • Roero DOCG, Italy • $36-39 private wine stores (Legacy Liquor Store, Marquis Wine Cellars) Overshadowed by the neighbouring Barolo and Barbaresco denominations, Roero produces a lighter style of Nebbiolo. Fineboned and juicy, Matteo Correggia’s demonstrates beautiful perfumed red roses, raspberry and cedar notes with an underlying firmness.
LAURA CATENA
Bodega Catena Zapata, Mendoza, Argentina I have so much admiration for this woman on so many levels. Besides being the general director of her family’s estate, Bodega Catena Zapata, she is an emergency room medical doctor and has her own wine label called Luca (named after her oldest son). Somehow, she knows how to prioritize all of her various responsibilities with impressive results across the board. 2013 Catena Alta • Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina • $52.99 BC Liquor Stores & Everything Wine If your Mom is a fan of Malbec, treat her to the Catena Alta. This comes from some of Catena’s historical plantings at high altitudes and offers pure floral notes of violets and lavender with deep red cherry on a polished, smooth and sumptuous palate. • Prices exclusive of taxes. This season’s trickiest trend: Mom pants Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor
When I started working for a glossy magazine a decade ago, I encountered a strange and exotic breed: fashion people. What distinguishes them from those of us who
dress like we’ve been rolled in glue and thrown through Aritzia (aka tasteful, but never adventurous)? They simply don’t give a shit about things that occupy far too much of most women’s brain space – like whether a pair of pants makes their thighs look fat, or a top makes their boobs look small. For them, the clothes
are the thing. Does a dress align with their sensibility? Are those shoes exquisitely made? Is that necklace a work of art? Do they like it? You only need to look at the collections of labels like Comme des Garçons or Vetements to know that in fashion, figure flattery will get you nowhere. Which brings us to the
latest trend to hit hipster cafés everywhere: ugly pants. These are the kind of trews my granny might have called slacks, or, to put it another way, mom pants. They’re wide-legged and cropped – close to culottes but not quite as voluminous. They’re high-waisted, too, which can make your whole mid-section look
larger, and is pretty uncomfortable to boot. My first reaction was a raised eyebrow – like, really? But as time has gone on, I’ve been drawn back to them. Doesn’t that high waist kind of make my tummy look smaller? Don’t my ankles appear daintier when counterpointed against the wide leg, which also sup-
plies welcome ventilation on a hot day? Do I, maybe, like how these pants look? And more to the point, isn’t it time to take a leaf from fashion folk and stop being in thrall to tedious doesmy-bum-look-big-in-this body tyranny? Instead, this season, I’m saying, screw this, I like it, I’m wearing it. W

The brand recently launched its line of hanging gardens, known as Kokedama (Japanese for moss string ball), which make adorably unexpected gifts. Once upon a time, Rita and Adam meet at an indie film event in East Van.They get super wasted and sleep together (although Rita doesn’t normally sleep with dudes). Not long after the hook-up, Rita discovers she’s pregnant – and Rita and Adam, despite barely knowing each other, decide to keep the baby and co-parent.
Inconceivable? Not if you’re filmmaker Joel Ashton McCarthy, who mined his real-life sitch for a web sitcom that’s amassed more than 100,000 views since premiering onYouTube last month. Inconceivable – which was funded through TELUS’ Storyhive program – stars Katie Stuart (The 100, Altered Carbon) as Rita and Bruce Novakowski (Average Dicks) as Adam, unlikely sex partners who end up maneuvering through the first trimester of an unplanned pregnancy. McCarthy conceived of the six-part series – and (spoiler alert!) a baby named Bowie – with Rachel Kirkpatrick, with whom he wrote the series along with frequent collaborator Mike Doaga. The trio pulls no punches in Inconceivable. Its first season

deep dives into all of the awkwardness and discomfort that you might expect from an unplanned pregnancy between acquaintances: the lead-up to, and act of, telling both sets of parents that a grandbaby is on the way; complicated conversations about next-steps and whatifs; the McCarthy character contemplating the potentially catastrophic impact of fatherhood on his burgeoning film career. “When people [watch Inconceivable and] are like, Well, someone wouldn’t do that, I can go, Well, I believe they would, because it did happen like that,” says McCarthy in a recent phone interview. Inconceivable isn’t the first time McCarthy has mined his personal life for a screen project. He won multiple awards (including Audience Choice prizes at several American film fests) for 2014’s Taking My Parents to Burning Man, a documentary about the time he literally took his parents to the tripped-out Burning Man festival, and critical acclaim for Shooting the Musical, a standout 2015 Whistler Film Festival mockumentary

Through its years on Granville Island, Emily Carr University has come to serve as a kind of gateway for many artists. Its calling is no more apparent than at its annual graduate show, an art exhibition held at the end of the school year in an ode to the graduating class. So, it is only fitting that one of the first displays in this year’s showcase, just steps from the main entrance, is a carved door panel bearing a raven in red cedar, by visual arts student William Callaghan. Inconceivable is something of a sequel to Shooting the Musical. Both star Novakowski as a fledgling filmmaker named Adam Baxter; both have the same Eastside

McCarthy and team had been wowed by Stuart’s demo reel, and were dismayed when she canceled her audition. “I creeped her on Facebook, saw we had a mutual friend, and had my mutual friend say, You should really go to that audition,” says McCarthy, noting it “wasn’t a professional way to go about it, but she ended up coming in, and the feeling was unanimous. We hit the jackpot with our two stars.” While Inconceivable is as

McCarthy realized the need for a slight course correction after he posted the pilot to his YouTube channel. “I looked into our analytics and saw that 50 per cent of the people were watching on their cell phones.” He ended up “framing the show tighter than I normally would.”That said, McCarthy’s ultimate goal for Inconceivable is the more traditional world of half-hour sitcom television. For someone who has offered up his private life for public consumption, McCarthy is surprisingly coy when asked about where the series could lead. “I don’t even want to spoil what our living situation is right now, because it’s too funny,” he chuckles. “We’re living season three right now.” W

Earlier in the day, Pearl and her husband Mike attended the school convocation ceremony, where Callaghan’s nephews walked the stage in acceptance of his posthumous Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Callaghan, 33, died last April. The family declined to publicly disclose the cause of death but said it was in relation to injuries sustained in 2004. Callaghan’s father, Mike, first brought his son to Emily Carr while he was undergoing medical examinations in Vancouver shortly after the collision. It was a difficult period then, he recalls, but Callaghan was taking to carving and showing inherent promise. Mike recalls saying to his son, “You have the potential to come to a university like this with your artwork.” A few years later, Callaghan would quietly finish his GED and submit his bid for Emily Carr. The return to Granville Island for Mike, despite having visited several times since the duo’s first venture, is at once a revered source of pride and of immeasurable heartache. “This was his second
Carver William Callaghan, who received a posthumous bachelor’s degree this year from Emily Carr. Contributed home,” he said. This September, when the school opens its doors to the new $122-million campus on Great Northern Way, a reproduction of Callaghan’s carved door panel, titled “Yeil” or Raven – the very one on display now – will be placed on the entrance of the University’s Aboriginal Gathering Place. “We wanted to bring William with us to the new campus,” said Jennifer DeDominicis, vice president of enrolment and student services at the school. “We want to acknowledge his impact, and feel that it is important for the many students, staff and faculty he touched.” Callaghan – who most identified with his Tlingit heritage, while also bearing an even mix of Irish, French and Norwegian roots – was an active member in the school’s Aboriginal initiatives. Longtime friend and sec-
ond year visual arts student, Megan Jensen, who was asked to be a mace bearer at this year’s convocation ceremony – a role designated to a graduating student most years – credits Callaghan for her own pursuits. ”I remember looking at all his work on the walls, and I remember his devotion to it and love for it was so strong, that I immediately felt this pull in me,” Jensen said. Jensen, who grew up performing in the same dance group as Callaghan in the Carcross/Tagish First Nations community in southernYukon, moved to Vancouver two years ago to pursue her studies. “He really inspired me to go to Emily Carr, as well,” she said. “He went; why can’t I go? Without even telling me to do anything, I learned a lot from him just being alive.” “William, to me, was a miracle,” said Pearl, meaning, “people who have a traumatic experience and who don’t fall through the cracks.” And if Callaghan’s gateway – his door panel, “Yeil” – were to provide a message for the many students to pass by it on the new campus, what might that message be? “You can do anything you want,” she said. Meet the real Heath Ledger SABRINA FURMINGER @sabrinarmf
There’s a lot that we know about Heath Ledger, the Australian actor who died in 2008 and left behind a legacy of stirring and resonant screen performances: Heath Ledger was a doting father. Heath Ledger was a standout in Brokeback Mountain. Heath Ledger truly deserved that posthumous Academy Award for reimaginingThe Joker in The Dark Knight. Heath Ledger died too young. There’s much about Ledger that has been explored by the tabloid press, namely relating to his personal relationships and why and how he died so young.
But here’s one more item to add to the list of things we know about the celebrated star, although it is somewhat less well known than his screen work and untimely death: Heath Ledger was an artist through and through, and he was driven by an innate need to create long before he arrived in Hollywood. I Am Heath Ledger introduces you to the artist we didn’t really get a chance to know. The new documentary – which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23, and screens at the Park Theatre on May 11 and Spike TV on May 17 – uses footage Ledger shot himself, as well as interviews with his parents, closest friends, and collaborators like Ang Lee,
New doc dives into Heath Ledger’s artistic life. Contributed Naomi Watts, Ben Harper, Ben Mendelsohn, and Djimon Hounsou, to paint a picture of a man who lived to tell visual stories. The documentary is the brainchild ofVancouver director and producer Derik Murray (I Am Chris Farley, I
Am Evel Knievel). It was codirected by Adrian Buitenhuis, written and edited by Hart Snider, produced by Murray’s Network Entertainment and released byThunderbird Entertainment. Buitenhuis had been directing documentaries about notorious figures like Pablo Escobar and Suge Knight when he was presented with the opportunity to pull the thread on Ledger’s artistic life. Says Buitenhuis in a recent phone interview: “For me, I was like, Who is the guy, and what made him special as an actor? I wanted to explore that, and as we moved quickly into the process of writing and developing the project, I found out that Heath was more interested in being a director all along.”When Ledger died, he was two months out from beginning production on his feature film directorial debut. Art is how Ledger related to
the world and the people in his life, says Buitenhuis. The documentary doesn’t just state this as fact; we see Ledger at Burning Man, training his bustedup camera on desert vistas and whatever he considered beautiful or interesting. We see Ledger turning still and video cameras on himself and his friends – a selfie innovator long before there was even a word for it.We see Ledger on set, directing his friends (including Ben Harper) in inventive music videos. In one scene, a walk from Ledger’s hotel room to the street becomes a highly charged dramatic adventure. “He knew he needed to document everything, but he didn’t know exactly why. It was just something he had to do,” marvels Buitenhuis. “I knew that Heath was an artist but to hear that from so many people and to see it was, This is real, it’s not just a motif, this is
actually who he was.” Ledger’s own words are woven into the narrative. The filmmakers received the trove of images and footage – as well as access to those nearest and dearest to Heath – because they worked hard to build a bridge of trust with Ledger’s friends and family. The key was the sincere promise they made upfront that this documentary was going to be about who Ledger was as an artist, according to Buitenhuis. Buitenhuis traveled to the Ledger family home in Perth this past January to wade into their videos and photos. His guide through the archives was Heath’s mother, Sally. “It was the first time she’d taken the time to go through all of it because it’s still so emotional, and it was amazing for her,” recalls Buitenhuis. “She felt good about it, and it was a great experience.” W

‘Encyclopedia of Lies’ wastes no words SABRINA FURMINGER @sabrinarmf
A word to burgeoning bards from BC writer Christopher Gudgeon: if you’ve hit a wall with your story or poem, don’t throw it away. You might find the words you need to finish it a year or two (or more) down the road. Gudgeon offers this advice from a position of experience. Some of the short stories in his newest release, The Encyclopedia of Lies, were almost two decades in the making. “Sometimes short stories take a long time. They seem short, but they can be a real pain in the ass,” says Gudgeon. Case in point: “Slumped in the Armchair of the Gods,” a standout in the series, was written over 15 years – a process Gudgeon likens to a carpenter not throwing away a piece of wood just because it doesn’t fit anything they’re building at that particular moment. “You put it aside because it might fit something later,” he says. “I love the process of writing. That’s why I do it. Sometimes you learn you just can’t force it. If it’s not working yet, maybe it’ll work later.”
Author Christopher Gudgeon spent 15 years crafting his latest book of short stories. Contributed photos The Encyclopedia of Lies is the latest from the prolific local author, who has more than 20 novels, and poetry and short story collections to his name, including Song of Kosovo and Greetings from the Vodka Sea. He was recently nominated for a 2017 Gerald Lampert Award for his 2016 poetry collection, Assdeep in Wonder. All of the stories in The Encyclopedia of Lies – which
is published by Vancouver’s Anvil Press – are about “the importance of the lies we create to sustain ourselves,” says Gudgeon. “It’s not, All lies are bad. It’s exploring how people use lies to sustain their sanity. You’re reading a collection of fiction, so right off the bat, that tells you that lies are important to me.” Gudgeon and Anvil Press have eschewed a traditional wineand-cheese party to launch the book. Instead, the collection will debut at a full-throttle music and spoken-word performance event entitled Night of 1000 (or less) Stars. Gudgeon has gathered an impressive line-up of writers and musicians – Craig Northey of Vancouver’s legendary pop band Odds, Nathan Rogers, 2016 Rogers Writers’Trust Fiction Prize WinnerYasuko Than, singersongwriter Dante Hadden, current Vancouver Community College Students, and a multi-Juno Award-winning
“surprise headliner” – to help celebrate the launch. The event serves a dual purpose, though: Night of 1000 (or less) Stars is also a fundraiser for VCC scholarship funds, set up in memory of Gudgeon’s son and foster son, Keating Gudgeon and Jess Nichol, to support young people in the arts. (According to the release, Nichol committed suicide in 2011, in his early 30s, after suffering from depression and other mental health issues for most of his adult life, while Keating Gudgeon died from a previously undiagnosed medical condition last October. He had just turned 20.) “Jess and Keating were both really committed to the arts,” says Gudgeon. “Jess was a DJ and poet, and Keating was a marvelous poet, and they both loved people.” The event, says Gudgeon, is “a way of celebrating and honouring their memory and taking what is a painful, terrible tragedy and doing some good with it.” • Night of 1000 (or less) Stars takes place May 13 at Vancouver Community College (1155 E. Broadway).Tickets by charitable donation to theVCC foundation. eventbrite.com W
Grant Lawrence gets ‘Dirty’ in rockin’ new memoir STAFF @westendervan
Long before he was delighting (and angering)Vancouverites as a Westender columnist, Vancouver Shakedown writer Grant Lawrence was holding court in the city’s gritty rock ‘n’ roll scene as the lead singer of the Smugglers. Formed when most of the members were still in high school, the Smugglers broke out in the early ’90s, during the height of the grunge explosion, as Lawrence worked as a concert promoter, putting on shows for Nirvana, Green Day and Bad Religion, to name a few. Now settled with a wife, kids, and respectable CBC job, the showman decided 2017 was a good year to pull pages from his personal tour diary and tell all in a salacious and humorous memoir of his musical coming of age, featuring tales from the band’s “boozefueled” road trips, “sweaty, broke and wayward attempts at rock ‘n’ roll glory” and moments of discovery. Take Chapter 2: Gruesomania!, where Lawrence describes his first visit to Club Soda with pal Nardwuar, at the tender age of 16: “The Homer Street
club was packed with people wearing the same colour as the paint on the windowless walls: black. Everyone had terrible posture. They slumped over like question marks in leather jackets with band logos handpainted or sewn on the back: SNFU, the Blasters, D.O.A., the Cramps, Black Flag, Death Sentence, the Damned. Haircuts ranged from rockabilly pompadours to punk mohawks to angular gothic explosions of purple hair, a.k.a. “The Kennedy.”The club reeked of cigarette smoke, stale beer and urinal pucks, a noxious smell that would eventually become my personal trigger of both nostalgia and post-traumatic stress disorder. Nardwuar and I sidestepped our way onto the dance floor until we were in a frothing swell of bodies, sweating and shoving, beer sloshing out of pint glasses. Looking up at the Gruesomes, we were in awe. They were a loud blur of cool; they were blowing our minds.” DirtyWindshields is out May 13 from Douglas & McIntyre. To celebrate, the Smugglers will also reunite that night at the Commodore for their first hometown gig in 17 years. Tickets $25 at ticketmaster.ca. W

All the insane things people Adopteez: Ariel did this week (part two) Sex with Mish Way
@MyszkaWay
Spring is in the air and everyone around the globe is nucking’ futs.
TANK GIRL AND “THE THING”
A 64-year-old sicko in England named Micheal Smith allegedly forced his girlfriend to have sex with his bull mastiff, recorded the act, and then reported her to social services.Weeks after the dog sex was caught on film, Smith went to social services in his home of Chickenley, WestYorkshire, and revealed the footage, saying he was concerned for his girlfriend’s welfare. Smith claimed that he came home and saw his girlfriend entangled with the creature. He thought the “dog was attacking her while she was changing”, and decided to roll camera. (Yeah sure, guy.) Smith also appears to reach on screen in the video to tap his girlfriend on the butt. During trial, his girlfriend admitted to having sex with the dog, however, it’s also been alleged that she was addicted to amphetamines and working as a prostitute at the behest of her drug dealer. The dog,Tank, was not harmed in the act. In another animal sex news, a deranged, demented dolt in Durham allegedly had sex with his black labrador retriever and then killed it.
Thomas Wentworth used the dog for hunting, and says he only killed the dog to put her out of her misery because she was old and sick. His girlfriend, however, claims that she witnessed Wentworth having sex with the beast, then he put ether in a plastic bag and strangled the dog until she died. It’s alleged that he then buried her in the yard with a backhoe, and also threatened to do the same to his girlfriend. In court,Wentworth reportedly murmured on like an inpatient off his meds: “That thing was my pet. I loved the thing.”
MRS. ROBERTSON
A Texas kindergarten teacher, Heather Lee Robertson, is facing six charges of second-degree improper relationship between educator and student, along with another six charges of second-degree sexual assault. According to the affidavit, Robertson, 38, had gone through a messy divorce with her husband and started drinking heavily.Three days after he filled papers, she allegedly shacked up with her first student. It’s said that Robertson’s young lovers would tell their parents they were “helping her move,” then she would pick them up and take them to her apartment for sex. It’s also alleged that she had a threesome with two of the students. Robertson admitted to having sex with four of her students, and also noted that she had been in
a wasted haze for months and that she didn’t really remember a lot of what was going on. Like many studentteacher relationships as of late, the initial flirting all began on social media.
THREE OHIO MEN LURE 8TH GRADER
Eric Ho, 25, and Bryan Otero, 27, could not get laid, so they allegedly got their friend, Ian Smith, to go on a social media app and lure a girl half their age. Smith reportedly logged into Chatango, then KIK, and started off a conversation with a 14-year-old girl, “Amelia.” The two agreed to meet. Smith picked her up across state lines, drove her back to the East Point Apartments in Union Township, Ohio where Ho and Otero were waiting. Amelia was allegedly raped by Ho while Otero watched. When arrested, Ho and Otero were handcuffed in their pajamas, and neighbors reported that one of them was dressed up as a female. All three men are in custody. Amelia is back with her family and safe, but let’s be real. Not every girl can process the brutality of sexual torture with the resolve of an Elizabeth Smart. Hopefully, these three deviants are locked away for life. W

NOA NICHOL @adopteezpleez
We’ve heard of animals living in shelters for long periods of time, but none comes close to the 12 years Ariel has spent with the Canadian Animal Rescue & Extended Shelter in Langley. And, though staff and volunteers at C.A.R.E.S. lavish this girl with loads of love and attention while she waits, everyone feels it is high time she found her forever home. “Our darling 17-yearold Ariel has been a C.A.R.E.S. kitty for 12 years now! Twelve years!” says C.A.R.E.S. director Allison Burton. “To put it in perspective, that is the year that Hurricane Katrina hit.” Burton explains that Ariel arrived at the shelter in 2005 after her owner was, tragically, killed in a car accident. While
We can think of a dozen good reasons – to match the dozen years she’s spent at the shelter – to take Ariel home. Elyse Dyck photo her roommate was quickly adopted by family friends, poor Ariel was, for some reason, surrendered, and has been hoping to find her own happy ending ever since. “Ariel was in foster care for the last two years but was recently returned to the shelter when it was discovered that she now has liver and kidney issues,” Burton says. “Our senior girl is also deaf, which is a common occur-
rence in older cats, but she still has lots of energy. She loves to play with her toys and snuggle in bed at night with her human. We would love to find this darling a foster home for the rest of her years. We guarantee she will provide lots of purrs and cuddles in exchange.” • Can you offer Ariel the forever she so deserves? Spend the day outside with Mom
MEGAN STEWART @mhstewart
For the first time in at least a decade, I’ll be hanging out with my mom on Mother’s Day. Sweet, right? We live hundreds of kilometres away from each other and typically catch up over the phone instead of in person. Since this weekend will be different, I’m hosting a playdate and taking her on a bicycle tour of the city. Celebrate your mom and other female mentors in your life by being active together, too.
Tee one up: Fraserview and McCleery golf academies offer private and group lessons. With the guidance of an instructor at these public courses, everyone from the novice to the scratch golfer can learn something to improve their game and lower their score. Go together. Drop a shot: Vancouver is home to more than 180 public tennis courts.Wrap up a new sleeve of balls and head out to rally or play a game. Flow: If you’ve never hit the yoga mat alongside your mom,
you really have no excuse not to.Try a beginner class if one of you is inexperienced, otherwise reserve two spots at your favourite studio. Right now, I’m feeling the live music classes at Moksha EastVan.
Ride the trails: The Southlands Riding Club does not offer horse rentals, but certified trainers can be hired for lessons before heading out on the trails with you.To take lessons at the club, non-members can pay a guest fee. If your mom ever grew up wanting a pony, give her one for the day. W

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny
Horoscopes as provided by WE Editorial
The process by which Zoo Jeans are manufactured is unusual. First, workers wrap and secure sheets of denim around car tires or big rubber balls, and take their raw creations to the Kamine Zoo in Hitachi City, Japan. There the denim-swaddled objects are thrown into pits where tigers or lions live. As the beasts roughhouse with their toys, they rip holes in the cloth. Later, the material is retrieved and used to sew the jeans. Might this story prove inspirational for you in the coming weeks? I suspect it will. Here’s one possibility: You could arrange for something wild to play a role in shaping an influence you will have an intimate connection with.
“Kiss the flame and it is yours,” teased the poet Thomas Lux. What do you think he was hinting at? It’s a metaphorical statement, of course. You wouldn’t want to literally thrust your lips and tongue into a fire. But according to my reading of the astrological omens, you might benefit from exploring its meanings. Where to begin? May I suggest you visualize making out with the steady burn at the top of a candle? My sources tell me that doing so at this particular moment in your evolution will help kindle a new source of heat and light in your deep self – a fresh fount of glowing power that will burn sweet and strong like a miniature sun.
Your symbol of power during the next three weeks is a key. Visualize it. What picture pops into your imagination? Is it a bejeweled golden key like what might be used to access an old treasure chest? Is it a rustic key for a garden gate or an oversized key for an ornate door? Is it a more modern thing that locks and unlocks car doors with radio waves? Whatever you choose, Gemini, I suggest you enshrine it in as an inspirational image in the back of your mind. Just assume that it will subtly inspire and empower you to find the metaphorical “door” that leads to the next chapter of your life story.
You are free to reveal yourself in your full glory. For once in your life, you have cosmic clearance to ask for everything you want without apology. This is the LATER you have been saving yourself for. Here comes the reward for the hard work you’ve been doing that no one has completely appreciated. If the universe has any prohibitions or inhibitions to impose, I don’t know what they are. If old karma has been preventing the influx of special dispensations and helpful X-factors, I suspect that old karma has at least temporarily been neutralized.
“I don’t want to be at the mercy of my emotions,” said Irish writer Oscar Wilde. “I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them.” In my opinion, that may be one of the most radical vows ever formulated. Is it even possible for us human beings to gracefully manage our unruly flow of feelings? What you do in the coming weeks could provide evidence that the answer to that question might be yes. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you are now in a position to learn more about this high art than ever before.
Africa’s highest mountain is Mount Kilimanjaro. Though it’s near the equator, its peak is covered year-round with glaciers. In 2001, scientists predicted that global warming would melt them all by 2015. But that hasn’t happened. The ice cap is still receding slowly. It could endure for a while, even though it will eventually disappear. Let’s borrow this scenario as a metaphor for your use, Virgo. First, consider the possibility that a certain thaw in your personal sphere isn’t unfolding as quickly as you anticipated. Second, ruminate on the likelihood that it will, however, ultimately come to pass. Third, adjust your plans accordingly.
Will sex be humdrum and predictable in the coming weeks? No! On the contrary. Your interest in wandering out to the frontiers of erotic play could rise quite high. You may be animated and experimental in your approach to intimate communion, whether it’s with another person or with yourself. Need any suggestions? Check out the “butterflies-inflight” position or the “spinning wheel of roses” maneuver. Try the “hum-and-chuckle kissing dare” or the “churning radiance while riding the rain cloud” move. Or just invent your own variations and give them funny names that add to the adventure.
Right now the word “simplicity” is irrelevant. You’ve got silky profundities to play with, slippery complications to relish, and lyrical labyrinths to wander around in. I hope you use these opportunities to tap into more of your subterranean powers. From what I can discern, your deep dark intelligence is ready to provide you with a host of fresh clues about who you really are and where you need to go. P.S.: You can become better friends with the shadows without compromising your relationship to the light.
You can bake your shoes in the oven at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, but that won’t turn them into loaves of bread. Know what I’m saying, Sagittarius? Just because a chicken has wings doesn’t mean it can fly over the rainbow. Catch my drift? You’ll never create a silk purse out of dental floss and dead leaves. That’s why I offer you the following advice: In the next two weeks, do your best to avoid paper tigers, red herrings, fool’s gold, fake news, Trojan horses, straw men, pink elephants, convincing pretenders, and invisible bridges. There’ll be a reward if you do: close encounters with shockingly beautiful honesty and authenticity that will be among your most useful blessings of 2017.
Of all the signs of the zodiac, you Capricorns are the least likely to believe in mythical utopias like Camelot or El Dorado or Shambhala. You tend to be uber-skeptical about the existence of legendary vanished riches like the last Russian czar’s Fabergé eggs or King John’s crown jewels. And yet if wonderlands and treasures like those really do exist, I’m betting that some may soon be discovered by Capricorn explorers. Are there unaccounted-for masterpieces by Georgia O’Keeffe buried in a basement somewhere? Is the score of a lost Mozart symphony tucked away in a seedy antique store? I predict that your tribe will specialize in unearthing forgotten valuables, homing in on secret miracles, and locating missing mother lodes.
According to my lyrical analysis of the astrological omens, here are examples of the kinds of experiences you might encounter in the next 21 days: 1. interludes that reawaken memories of the first time you fell in love; 2. people who act like helpful, moon-drunk angels just in the nick of time; 3. healing music or provocative art that stirs a secret part of you – a sweet spot you had barely been aware of; 4. an urge arising in your curious heart to speak the words, “I invite lost and exiled beauty back into my life.”
Ex-baseball player Eric DuBose was pulled over by Florida cops who spotted him driving his car erratically. They required him to submit to a few tests, hoping to determine whether he had consumed too much alcohol. “Can you recite the alphabet?” they asked. “I’m from the great state of Alabama,” DuBose replied, “and they have a different alphabet there.” I suggest, Pisces, that you try similar gambits whenever you find yourself in odd interludes or tricky transitions during the coming days – which I suspect will happen more than usual. Answer the questions you want to answer rather than the ones you’re asked, for example. Make jokes that change the subject. Use the powers of distraction and postponement. You’ll need extra slack, so seize it!

Peruvian Farmer Relief
In support of World Fairtrade Month Another flooding event has occurred in Northern Peru where nearly all of their bananas, mangos and avocados are grown. Damage to land, bridges, irrigation systems and access roads have devastated these small producers. Choices, in partnership with Discovery Organics, is looking to help. During the week of May 11 to 17, Choices will donate 10% of sales from Fairtrade produce items and Choices Bakery Banana Bread to the Peru Relief Fund.
