Tapped In fundraiser taps into craft beer scene

Summer Night Concerts at the PNE

Final week for Theatre Under The Stars

While the local craft beer scene continues to build its reputation as world-class, there’s always room for newcomers. Enter Tapped In, the first “blind” tasting of BC craft beers — a unique opportunity to go beyond the label and uncover the character of your favourite brew. What you have been tasting will ultimately be revealed in the final hour, but until then, you can sip and surprise yourself from 7pm onwards at Performance Works on Granville Island, while enjoying delightful appetizers from Pings Wings Wondering Wok. Proceeds benefit the Shooting Stars Foundation, in support of direct service HIV/AIDS agencies. Tickets are $35 each; must be 19+. Head to ShootingStarsFoundation.org.

Starting this weekend, The Fair at the PNE not only opens. but launches its iconic summer night concert series, featuring performances by Grammywinner Melissa Etheridge (Aug. 17; pictured), The Beach Boys (Aug. 23), and Great Big Sea (Aug. 21). Those names not mind-blowing enough for you? Then don’t miss the amazing energy of The Jacksons (Aug. 18) and dance the night away to Foreigner (Aug. 27). Running August 17 to Sept. 2 (closed Monday Aug. 19 and 26), all concerts are free with nightly admission. It also marks the start of Vancouver’s favourite fair. And don’t forget, it’s free gate admission Aug. 20 from 11am to 1pm. PNE.ca

The 67th season of Theatre Under the Stars has featured two toe-tapping musical comedies, performed on alternate nights, since July at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. It’s here that the sights, smells and sounds of Mother Nature combine with top-notch musical theatre to create a spellbinding Vancouver experience. Sadly, this is your last week to see this year’s plays. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying takes the stage for the final nights August 14 and 16, and Legally Blonde: The Musical sends off summer with a smash August 15 and 17. Thinking outside the classroom box City School uses all of Vancouver as its learning space; “instead of just reading a play, we go and see it” By Gen Handley

A

s a teenager working a full-time job to get by on his own, Paul Sander was having a tough time in school. One day, a friend told him about the City School, a program based at King George Secondary that uses the “city as its classroom,” teaching students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 who learn more effectively outside the traditional classroom box. “(City School) is for students who want an educational experience more engaging and intimate,” says Sal Robinson, an alternative program worker and Sander’s former teacher. “Our mandate is to use resources outside of the classroom to cover the curriculum — using the city as the classroom. So instead of just reading a play in class, we would go and see it.” Since 1971, the school has engaged its students by taking them out into the community, extending the classroom into places like the theatre, concerts and galleries and incorporating the experiences into the curriculum. “Not everyone thrives in the traditional public school system,” says Sander, who is now the director of Hollyburn Properties, a major property management company in Vancouver. “City School gave me a flexible environment in which to prioritize my education — one that allowed me to organize my studies around my full-time work schedule. The caring teachers and unique opportunities of this program were really fundamental in my success.” Robinson, who is a former City School student as well, remembers the young Sander vividly. “Paul was really enthusiastic and not always awake when he needed to be,” she recalls with a laugh, “but he was always

Michael just completed her first year at the City School, in Grade 10. “It was great, it was fantastic,” the 15-yearold says. “I had a lot of trouble transitioning back into public school so City School was a lot closer to that style of education I grew up in. It’s a lot more open and offers a lot more freedom to do what you want. In City School, we call teachers by their first names, which builds a certain tone between students and the teachers. It’s put them more on your level so you’re able to connect with them more; they’re really great.” The diversity and the depth of experiences help student like Michael, but so does the intimacy of the City School classroom. “If I struggle in a subject, teachers don’t always have the ability to help me because

He jumped in and created the Hollyburn Helps Fund providing monthly donations of $1,000 to the program that guided him as a teenager. “Seeing that my former high school, the City School, was one of the schools affected [by the cuts] really resonated with me,” Sander says. “Many of our employees’ kids and our resident’s kids go to King George Secondary today so I went to the principal to see how Hollyburn could help alleviate the budget cuts and the shortage of staff that job action was presenting at the time.” One student who is benefitting from the

I really need that.” “The caring teachers and unique opportunities of this program were fundamental in my success,” Sander says. “Three decades later I feel fortunate that Hollyburn is able to give back to the West End community through my old school and to know that other teenagers, challenged by the mainstream system, have options.” Happy and looking forward to staying in the program until Grade 12, Michael knows what she wants to do when she graduates. “Art repatriation,” she says quickly. “Either that or take over the universe.”

The definitive guide to By Kelsey Klassen

S

ome say the creation of your identity is rooted in childhood, but what about college — that time of new friends and new skills, when choices aren’t vetted by parental supervision, actions have an unbuffered case of cause and effect, and cash-flow issues force you to get creative. Truth be told, only a fraction of the person you knew in high school will emerge four (or five) years later. Naturally, you want your dorm room — the room in which you’ll break ground, hearts and coffee-consumption records — to also evolve and reflect the unique matryoshka-like layers of your personality. Some advice? Resist the ubiquitous poster sales, and decorate sans Kurt Cobain references (unless you were somehow in Seattle in 1992 when Nirvana performed that 10-song set at the Croc) and pictures of Kate Moss (oh, Kate, forever young). Try some affordable Vancouver street art (Ken Foster makes a great start to any art collection), or pick up a paint brush yourself one of those first weekends in September. And instead of a potted plant that will guilt you from the window sill as you realize 24 hours isn’t actually enough time to water it in a day, get a lowmaintenance terrarium, perhaps with a little ceramic person or animal in it for you to talk to on your third day of thesis writing. Finally, if this all looks great but might cost a few too many Queen Elizabeth II’s,

blogs such as Apartment Therapy and Poppytalk have amazing DIY hacks on pretty much every decorating project you can dream up, so track down the (much cheaper) components and come up with something even better!

1 - MAIL You will look back on your time at university with mixed emotions, but you will always remember how awesome it was to get things in your mailbox that weren’t bills. Make sure it’s a regular dose of good news by subscribing to a cool magazine. Try a gorgeous and well-written quarterly like Kinfolk (the “guide for small gatherings”) to get the inspiration flowing; your future parties will thank you. Individual issues are sold at Old Faithful for $18. Subscriptions ($60/year) can be bought at Kinfolk. com. Also, check out the letter writing workshops at Regional Assembly of Text (story page 23). 2 - COFFEE You could get one of those

single-serve brewers (if you like creating compressed garbage pucks with every coffee you drink), or you could stick to a technology that hasn’t changed much in 100 years; pick up a stylish French press that will graduate with you into your first apartment and beyond. The concept may have been patented by Italian designer, but we’ve got to go with the Bodum Brazil 8C (made in Denmark by a Swiss company and called a French press). Crossbred European lineage aside the minimalist Bodum is a most durable, attractive and affordable flavour delivery device. And no paper filter means no waste. $20; available at the Bay.

3 - TOOLS Invented by Vancouver’s

Kevin Royes and touted by O Magazine as “the next best thing to living with a handyman”, the Kelvin 23 is 23 essential tools, from measuring tape to level, rolled into one compact cast-aluminum supertool. And, ladies, while it also comes in pink, THAT was not deemed an “essential” function. For everything else — from hanging pictures to assembling flat packed furniture — this beauty has you covered. $30; Home Hardware.

4 - TIME With wall and desk space at

a premium, Finn Magee kills two birds with one design via his Flat Life Clock for Areaware — a poster of a digital alarm clock that is actually a functioning clock. Huzzah! Its cleverness, no matter your grades, will make you look clever by default (just don’t ruin it by admitting the $160 price point); Secret Location.

5 - BAGS Special thanks to Walrus on

Cambie for lending us one of their bestselling backpacks — Herschel’s Little America — for the cover photo. The navy blue with leather straps positively reeks of classic mountaineering style, so if you prefer your beauty timeless, this is the beginning and the end of your search. But if you are picking up on the theme of this piece, patterns aren’t going anywhere. Herschel’s Spring/Summer ‘14 booth at the KNOWSHOW was bedecked in backpacks sporting treehouse patterns and fish prints! But that’s SO next year, and this black chevron is available now. For a pattern that will turn heads for years to come, it’s top of our shopping

STUDENT ‘SPIRITS’

UBC’s Ryan Rosell spends summer on campus working at the student-run radio station. CiTR has three full-time student positions during the summer, up to 15 part-time employees, 100 volunteers who host shows and 300 members in total. Lou Lou Childs photos

Radio station keeps students busy all summer RYAN ROSELL, 21

CiTR 101.9 FM production coordinator, host of ‘Butta on the Bread’, CiTR’s incoming student executive president and WE cover guy. By Kelsey Klassen What are you studying? English literature. Why UBC? I’m from the US, but am lucky enough to have a Canadian father who could pass on his citizenship. It was way cheaper to go to school here. Plus the drinking age is 19. Favourite spot on campus? Sleeping either on the very top floor of Koerner Library or on the upper floor of the pool, aka “The Womb”. Favourite memory? At the end of my first year, we had a friend whose final exam got scheduled in the very last slot possible. Most people had been done for a week and he was still studying. A friend and I felt bad and wanted to do something to cheer him up, so we showed up to school on the day of his exam. It was an entry-level Spanish course, so there must have been at least three or four hundred people packed into the gymnasium to take the test. As the proctors were handing out the exams, two masked naked guys sprinted through the gym screaming and jumping over desks. No one ever figured out who it was. If you could minor in something ridiculous, what would it be? Cheese-making.

How would you improve transit to UBC? There needs to be a Sky Train! Top five songs you’re listening to right now? • ‘Moon Woman’ by Homeshake • ‘Numbers on the Hoard’ by Jonwayne • ‘Sylvan Tragedy’ by Gal Gracen • ‘Cooking Up Something Good’ by Mac DeMarco • ‘Hedron’ by BadBadNotGood What is a must-buy for you for school? Cuisinart blender. It’s far superior to the Magic Bullet and will fulfill all of your soup and smoothie needs. Are you dorm or off-campus? Off-campus. You can’t live where you work. Favourite class? World Literature with Emily Somers. If you could have a band follow you around campus between classes, who and why? I would have ChrisA-Riffic following me around with his piano on wheels. I never leave a conversation with that man feeling blue. Biggest college cliché? People who use Facebook in class. Catch ‘Butta on the Bread’ every Wednesday, 3 - 4pm. Tune in at 101.9 FM or stream it live at CITR.ca.

What’s keeping it light on campus at the moment? There is someone who paints “Jesus Raves” all over school. I laugh every time I see it. Describe your work at Citr: I am the president of the student executive, which means I organize a group of highly active students, and am the liaison between them and staff. I am also the programming and community engagement coordinator. This means I produce all of the advertisements that go on air and coordinate all of the live broadcasts that we do from festivals and other events. Perks of working for campus radio? More than you can imagine: Being able to wear whatever you want to work, access to over 35,000 CDs in our library, professional development in everything from audio engineering to journalism, meeting bands, seeing shows for free, free beer, meeting people who share common interests, using our sound equipment to host bands at house parties, access to rare vinyl records, going on the air, working at festivals. Our programming director is basically my therapist; the list goes on and on.

e all know that Vancouverites are proud supporters of the local food movement but it turns out that when it comes to expressing that pride, diners in other parts of the province have us beat. In the We Heart Local awards, Vancouver makes it on the first-place winners’ list only once — Edible Vancouver Magazine as a Local Food Advocate. “I was surprised [by the results] because a lot of the promotion for the awards was in Vancouver,” says Jennifer Woron, the program manager for Buy Local. Eat Natural, which initiated the awards. However, “in the other communities, the businesses that were nominated really got out the vote.” She’s now looking forward to being able to taste her way around the province to check out the winners. We Heart Local is designed “to build momentum around the buy/eat local movement in BC and get people more excited about and invested in making local food choices while at the same time providing valuable recognition to those involved.” In this, the inaugural year for the online voting initiative, there were 238 suppliers and chefs nominated by the public and 10,395 votes cast. The following are the winners and follow-uppers: • Favourite Store to Buy Local: Nature’s Pickin’s, Abbotsford; Lepp Farm Market; Edible Canada at the Market

Who gets to define what authenticity in food means? And why does it even matter?

FollowMeFoodie By Mijune Pak

P

eople often argue about authenticity in food, especially if they have travelled or tried home-cooked versions of ethnic dishes. We’re lucky to live in a multicultural city with many diverse dining options, but there is still an ongoing quest to find authentic food. But what really is “authentic” and can it be defined? And if it is not authentic but it tastes good, does it really matter? Authenticity in general, let alone in food, is objective and the only way it can be measured is relative to the context in which it was made and what is available. Everyone has their own interpretation. Definitions are created through experience and we only know what we have tried. People often hold what they grew up with as a golden standard for what is considered authentic, but even this is biased. Ingredients, techniques, recipes and traditions evolve with time and so do palates. Quite often, recipes are regional, or even unique to cities. For example, Italian food in the North is richer and heavier than Italian food in the South, but who is to say one is more authentic than the other? Therefore when we dine Italian and receive pasta that is a bit more generously sauced, it risks being deemed “non-authentic”. Could it have been inspired by Northern Italian styles of pasta? I’m not talking about restaurants making commercialized Italian food, but chefs and cooks who are actually trying to bring a true taste of Italy closer to home. The other “gold standard” for authenticity is the one people bring back after travelling to the place where the dish originated. Just because one has tried sushi in Japan, or croissants in Paris, does not necessarily make him a connoisseur of the food, or mean what they tried was even authentic. Not every place in Paris is making excellent croissants and Paris isn’t even where croissants started. Croissants technically trace back to Austria and their version of a croissant, the Kipferl; or should I say the Parisian version of the Kipferl is the croissant? Likewise, sushi was first Chinese, although the Japanese really adapted it and made it their own. Trying food from its so-called origins may give one a better idea of “authenticity”, but it really depends. It is also slightly unreasonable to bring these standards of authenticity to an ethnic table outside of its origin. Once ethnic food is made outside of its natural context it is almost inauthentic by

While these steamed pork belly baos from San Francisco have little resemblance to the authentic ones from Taiwan, does it really matter? Mijune Pak photo default. Ingredients and resources are limited and vary from place to place, so just like the “eat local” movement which is “as local as possible”, so is the goal for “authenticity”. Ethnic food is often “as authentic as possible” given the available ingredients. Global ingredients can be hard to source and local ingredients just taste different so to replicate flavours of a different country is near impossible. Quite often people might not even like or know what is authentic even if it hit them. Those cooking ethnic food usually have to tweak their recipes due to resources and having to adapt to tastes of other cultures. There is home-cooked food and restaurant food, and the former is often more appealing to a niche market. For the most part, Szechuan food outside of Szechuan is never as spicy, and the same goes for Thai, Jamaican and Indian. Even an uncut pizza with a soft soupy centre, which represents an authentic Neapolitan-style pizza, will get sent back to be cut and baked longer. Is there even a point in trying to deliver authenticity when the majority of diners might not even appreciate it or get it? It might be naive to think chefs and cooks should keep working towards authenticity even if it is underappreciated, but it helps educate the market and pushes palates by trying to achieve it. Arguing authenticity in food might be trivial, but to people who value traditions, culture and history, it matters. In the end it is about personal tastes and whether or not it is good, but authenticity should not be overlooked even if it is challenging to measure it. Follow your nose — for wine — to some interesting places By Christy Brookes

T

hink of the BC Wine Appreciation Society as a book club but instead of dissecting Oprah’s latest obsession, you share your love of vino with fellow wine aficionados. Membership is reasonable ($40 for the year) and involves monthly tasting events, a wine dinner featuring a specific winery at one of Vancouver’s best restaurants and a yearly bus tour to one of the wine regions of the Okanagan. The BCWAS is one of five wine societies in Vancouver, with a growing membership (now up to 120 members from 10 back when they started) and a younger demographic. Founded by Brian Glaum and his wife Krystal Kaulback eight years ago, don’t expect hoity-toity and serious events, with people sniffing, swirling, sipping and swishing. Instead it’s like a warm and welcoming get-together that harkens of a dinner party with close friends. For instance, just before BCWAS’ summer break, they brought Steven and Dawn Heiss of BC’s oldest family-owned winery, Gray Monk Estate, to the Listel Hotel to talk about the winery’s history and recent anniversary. While the level of wine knowl-

edge certainly varied across the room, it didn’t matter how well versed you are in your Pinots and Syrahs. Some people attend to expand their technical knowledge, while others really just enjoy the social aspect — getting together with people they’ve come to know and very much like, chatting and sampling amazing local wines and further figuring out what their palate likes and doesn’t like. The next event is the annual bus tour. This year (September 14 and 15), members are taking in Naramata on the Saturday and Summerland on the Sunday. Saturday’s dinner will feature wines from DiBello and Van Westen wineries at the Summerland Waterfront Resort, where the group will spend the night (although you can make alternative arrangements.) A second winemaker’s dinner has been added so that Harry McWatters can introduce members to his new Time Estate wines. Other highlights include lunch at Poplar Grove’s Vanilla Pod restaurant and a festival-style tasting with seven wineries at Okanagan Crush Pad, with lunch by Joy Road Catering. The price for members is $429 (which includes two multi-course lunches and dinners, with wines; hotel not included) plus $60 for an optional walk-around dinner. Go to BCWAS.com for details.

Salmon bake celebrates BC Pinot Noir CityCellar By Kurtis Kolt

I

was going to start off this week’s column by saying “I’ve been thinking about Pinot Noir a lot lately,” but then realized I’m pretty much always thinking of the grape. I don’t know if I could call it my favourite wine grape (that would be like asking a parent to name his favourite child), but I probably do end up gravitating towards Pinots more than any other types of wine. For me, it’s their often-lightweight elegance, the breadth of flavours from truffles and cherries to a variety of spice, and their “Princess and the Pea”-like ability to express the subtlest mineral notes from the soil. On top of all that, the level of alcohol in Pinots is often less than that of your Cabernets and Syrahs, keeping things nice and civilized.

It probably goes without saying, then, that I was elated to receive a note from JAK Meyer of Meyer Family Vineyards in Okanagan Falls asking if I’d be willing to sit on a panel at his winery’s BC Pinot Noir Celebration and Salmon Bake on September 1. With a dozen local wineries on the roster, I and a host of other wine folks will be discussing the ins and outs of the noble grape, from its Burgundian origins to the wide variety of styles we produce here at home. For me, the first winery I think of when I’m looking to British Columbian Pinot Noir is Blue Mountain, which has been knocking it out of the park with the grape for over 20 years. Not only that, the Mavety family has been farming their land since 1971 and has consistently delivered lovely, balanced versions with Old World flair, loaded with truffles, plums and a host of baking spices in both of their $30 Classic and $45 Reserve versions.

UBC discovers 23 more reasons to drink red wine

R

aise a glass of your favourite red wine to UBC associate professor Cedric Saucier and his team at UBC”s enology laboratory at the Okanagan campus, as well as UBC grad Ryan Moss. They found 23 previously undetected stilbenoid compounds, which are believed to have health benefits. Saucier says the discovery could lead to medical breakthroughs and perhaps more benefits of drinking wine in moderation.

This means more than 1,500 tokens can be distributed to people in need in the Downtown East Side.

Over on Vancouver Island, I’ve always been impressed with Andy Johnston’s $26 Averill Creek version from estategrown grapes in the Cowichan Valley. Though ripening reds properly can be a challenge around those parts, he utilizes techniques such as tenting the vines in early spring to usher in a little more warmth than would naturally be kicking around that time of year, allowing a slightly longer season. Perfumed bing cherries and soft, silky tannins are consistent hallmarks of his style. Of course, winemaker Chris Carson at Meyer Family Vineyards is certainly no slouch, delivering a quite solid $25 version from grapes sourced around the Okanagan, and single-estate bottlings if you want to dig deeper into your pockets.

There are so many more, and I have so little space! I haven’t even gotten into the Quail’s Gate’s stunning Stewart Family Reserve ($45), which I find often has the slightest hint of chocolate to it, or David Paterson’s buoyant, floral take on Pinot up at Tantalus in Kelowna ($30). You’ve been meaning to get up to the Okanagan soon anyways, right? Come join the Pinot conversation on September 1 at Meyer Family Vineyards. The whole kit and kaboodle is $125 and sure to be an awesome time. You can head on over to MFVWines.com for more info. As always, if you’re having trouble tracking something down, find me via KurtisKolt.com or Tweet me @KurtisKolt.

Containers hold homes in Downtown Eastside Affordable housing is taking a new twist with a complex in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside built from old shipping containers. A dozen containers have been converted into apartments, each with about 290 square feet of living space. Every home includes a private bathroom, kitchen and in-suite laundry, as well as huge floor-to-ceiling windows. The project was built through a partnership between Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation, Atira Women’s Resource

Society, BC Hydro and several other community partners. The aim was to provide safe, affordable housing for women in the Downtown Eastside. “We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome of this development,” says Atira Women’s Resource Society CEO Janice Abbott. “Atira has the vision and the tenacity to see this project through a precedent-setting development process, despite criticism and opposition. ... The building and individual suites look better than we ever could have imagined.”

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

Construction began on Nov. 30, 2012, and every home was completed by July of this year. Six of the homes will be social housing for older women, while the remaining six will be rented at Housing Income Limits rental rates. The residents of the social housing homes will be women with roots in the Downtown Eastside who will be mentoring younger women living next door at the Imouto Housing for Young Women through Atira’s Intergenerational Mentorship Program. Residents will be able to take possession on Sept. 1. “This shipping container housing development serves to show us that with creative thinking we can work to ensure that everyone has access to safe and secure housing,” says Miriam Sobrino, chair of Atira’s board of directors. The project was inspired by BC Hydro’s “House of the Future”, which was also made from recycled shipping containers and was placed on the front lawn of BC Hydro’s office during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. BC Hydro donated the house after the end of the Games. Two other containers were donated, and the remaining eight were purchased through the Port of Vancouver. For more information, visit www.atira.bc.ca.

Executivestyle living at Lakeside By Kerry Vital

Polygon’s Sunstone master-planned community in North Delta is the perfect family-friendly neighbourhood, with amenities, plenty of outdoor space and gorgeous homes. Now the community is adding elegance with Lakeside, threebedroom townhomes right in the heart of Sunstone.

“Nothing has been built like this in years,” says Lakeside sales manager Theresa Liljedahl. “These are true executive-level townhomes.” Lakeside brings something special to Sunstone with its master-on-main floorplan, the Seaside Series. “There’s been a high demand for homes with the master on the main floor,” Liljedahl says. “People have been waiting years for this. It’s all-on-one-level living.” The upper floor includes two more bedrooms and a flex room, giving buyers options for how they want to use their space. The second floorplan at Lakeside, the Hampton Series, features all three bedrooms on the upper level. Most homes are over 2,000 square feet, giving you tons of space to entertain or relax. Curb appeal is not in short supply at Lakeside. The homes are built using classic

Seaside architecture, with pitched roofs, stone and wood detailing and window boxes. Street-fronting homes include picket fencing and stone post entry gates to complement the architecture. Buyers will be able to enjoy time outdoors on their private decks or patios, which feature gas hookups for your barbecue. You’ll also love your private fenced yard. The kitchen in your new home is a prime example of the high-quality finishings you’ll find at Lakeside. With engineered stone countertops, a marble backsplash, customdesigned, naturally stained quarter oak flat panel or white painted Shaker-style cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances, your kitchen is fit for a gourmet chef. It’s also the perfect place to entertain with its kitchen island. Select homes include a large walk-in pantry for extra storage. Laminate flooring is featured throughout

the main living areas. Radiant in-floor heating will keep you warm and comfortable no matter what the weather is doing. “It’s a wonderful way of heating a home,” says Liljedahl. Nine-foot ceilings on the main level add to the sense of spaciousness in the home, with some homes featuring vaulted ceilings in the living room. Your new living room also holds an electric fireplace with custom surround. The master ensuite bathroom is made for pampering, with its oversized soaker tub, separate shower with glass enclosure and marble tile accents and marble countertops. It also features his-and-hers sinks, a large vanity mirror and porcelain tile flooring. Every home has a main floor powder room for maximum convenience, with its own porcelain tile flooring and elegant pedestal sink or vanity with undermount sink. Sunstone is home to some pretty amazing amenities. The 12,000-square-foot Sunstone Club includes an outdoor pool, gym, fireside lounge with a billiards table and much more. Sunstone Lake is right beside Lakeside, along with a playground, outdoor stage and several trails for walking or cycling. A shopping village is in the works for the future, and an urban community garden is moments away. When you venture off the property, you’ll find schools, shopping, dining and recreation all nearby. Homes start in the low $600,000s. For more information, visit www.polyhomes.com, call 604-585-7107 or visit the presentation centre at 10500 Delsom Avenue, open daily except Fridays between noon and 6 p.m.

Dry summer hasn’t drained Metro water reservoirs By Jeff Nagel

D

espite a sunny and rain-free July, Metro Vancouverites kept tap water usage under control. And regional district officials are crediting tightened lawn sprinkling regulations for the water conservation success during the record dry spell. Metro Vancouver dispensed an average of 1.45 billion litres a day last month, with a peak of 1.6 billion litres on July 24. The region consistently stayed well below its one-day record high for water consumption of more than two million litres set four years ago. “It appears that mornings-only lawn sprinkling regulations across the region have helped to reduce the demand for our highquality drinking water in summer, when the demand for water soars during hot and sunny days,” said North Vancouver City Mayor Darrell Mussatto, who chairs Metro’s utilities

committee. Metro decided to ban evening lawn sprinkling to ease demand at peak hours when many households are running dishwashers, clothes washers and baths. Metro reservoirs are currently about 78 per cent full — somewhat lower levels than the previous two summers when more rain fell, but still well within what’s considered the normal range. Metro has plenty of water most of the year but its North Shore reservoirs can run low in the peak-use summer months if homes and businesses consume too much. Mussatto said collective diligence in conserving water helps postpone the need for costly new projects to build higher dams and bigger mains and pumping stations. Lawn sprinkling is only allowed before 9 a.m. in the morning, three days a week, between June 1 and Sept. 30. Watering of shrubs, trees, flowers and vegetables are exempt from the lawn restrictions.

elamont is Kitsilano’s oldest city block of houses. On Sunday, August 18, join local historian Bruce Macdonald for a fascinating exploration of the neighbourhood. The two-Hour walking tour will start at 2pm in the small park at the northeast corner of Arbutus and 7th Avenue. In 1905 streetcar service was extended from downtown to Kits Beach, home-building began in earnest, and the Kitsilano community was born. MacDonald’s father moved to Kitsilano seven years later and his grandfather began working just one block from Delamont. Amazingly, amongst the blocks and blocks of apartment buildings in east Kitsilano is a small group of houses surviving from those earliest years and before. In the same way the Park Board accidentally saved the heritage houses of Mole Hill and the pioneer homes below the towers surrounding the West End’s Barclay Heritage Square Park, it has now accidentally preserved Victorian homes dating from 1901 in Kitsilano’s Delamont Park area. The walking tour is a Heritage Vancouver Society event. The cost for members is $10; for non-members it’s $15. You can register at HVS-Delamont. eventbrite.com. Wear comfortable walking shoes and in case of rain bring your umbrella. For more information go to HeritageVancouver.org.

planning that add up to huge results. The renovation also features cutting-edge sustainability adaptations such as window positioning that follows the path of the sun to maximize natural heat gain and installing windows removed from the exterior in interior walls to increase air flow. On September 21, the Vancouver Hertiage Foundation is hosting a tour of the house on September 21. Tickets are $35 each.. Meanwhile, other Vancouver Heritage Foundation events include a Mid Century Modern Tour of five beautiful examples of West Coast modernism including Hollingsworth and Ron Thom on August 17, Stanley Park bike tours on August 17, a West Hastings walking tour on August 23 and two heritage plaque presentations: August 25 at Shakespeare Garden in Stanly Park (including a performance of the Young Shakespeareans) and Nat Bailey Stadium on August 29 before the Canadians vs Tri-City Dust Devils game. What is your most sentimental wardrobe item? Every item in my closet reminds me of people or a story...But my Missoni dress from my grandmother and my first bracelet from my first birthday from my parents. Where do you shop for everyday staples? Whole Foods for the quality, Granville Island for the variety, Walmart and Superstore for the value. Where do you look for that after-hours ‘wow’ outfit? Local boutiques like Egocloset or BCBG or H&M. Dream splurge item: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, black with red interior. Too much? And a trip to see the world for my parents. Which fashion event do you look forward to the most every year? It’s more cosmetics than fashion...But CosmoProf in Las Vegas. Fashion pet peeve: Lululemon pants are not dress pants. They’re sweat pants. And ladies and gentlemen, proper underwear goes a LONG way.

Back-to-school Fall beauty picks Light-up nail polish bottle, gluten-free make-up and hitech curling tool among the new beauty products coming to London Drugs this Fall By Sabrina Furminger

The clever folks at Lise Watier have outfitted their nail polish applicators with lights (perfect for those of us who paint our nails in front of the television). Our favourite shade: Chic Tartan, part of their limited edition Tartantastique collection.

Say “no” to complicated curlers and arduous irons: the Curl Secret by InfinitiPRO by Conair gives tight, flawless curls in a fraction of the time. Hair is drawn into a tourmaline ceramiccoated barrel curl chamber where it is held and heated; the device beeps when the perfectly curled lock is ready to be released and admired. This one’s a game-changer.

ondon Drugs rolled out its Fall beauty products in June with a full-throttle media event that impressed even the most jaded style journalists in attendance. A London Air helicopter whisked guests from the downtown heliport, over the inlet, and to a spacious hangar at YVR that had been decked out in red carpet style for the occasion. While the bottomless libations, swanky decor and proximity to shiny aircraft certainly wowed the media crowd, the real stars of the party were the top-notch cosmetic and beauty products set to touch down in London Drugs locations this Fall. Suppliers from as far away as Italy (including Babila and Tatiana from Milan’s Layla Cosmetics) were on hand to preview their new lines and dish on product innovations. Here are a few of our top picks:

Quebec-based skin care firm Jouviance is dedicated to keeping skin of all ages taut and hydrated, and their new anti-aging cream is a formidable addition to any skin care regimen. The brainchild of a leading dermatologist, the cream masterfully combines day, night and eye contour tech in one light product. Combine with their revitalizing eye serum and kiss those dark, puffy circles buh-bye.

Noteworthy Vancouver Music Academy will share its teaching approach in Hong Kong in a Bing Thom-restored mansion By Martha Perkins

J

oseph Elworthy is not being a music snob when he asks to sit farther away from the source of a Willie Nelson tune flowing through a coffee shop across from the Orpheum Theatre. A cellist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the executive director of the Vancouver Music Academy, Elworthy believes in the power of music. Comparing classical music to a “slowly consumed meal you want to saviour,” he knows that sometimes it’s fun to give into our cravings for music’s equivalent of fast food. But right now, he wants to talk about music, not be distracted by it. “Music expresses the inexpressible and allows the listener to insert their own narrative,” he says, warming up to a subject that’s near and dear to his heart. That’s why, as important as it is to learn good

technique, VAM wants to help foster more than accomplished musicians. Its programming includes classes about the cultural contexts of music and encourages students to love learning about everything, not just how to play the perfect C#. “Our mandate is to produce people who will contribute to society in a meaningful way,” says Elworthy, one of VAM’s first students and the father of two children currently enrolled there. With this year’s grads about to continue their education — musical or otherwise — at places such as Harvard, Princeton and Stanford, it’s certainly reaching that goal. However, this comprehensive approach to music education has also caught the eye of a group of people involved in an exciting project in Hong Kong. VAM is part of a partnership that’s been granted permission to transform a majestic 25,000 sq.ft. mansion into a music school modeled on VAM’s approach of nurturing “well-rounded, fascinating” students. The Haw Par Mansion was built in 1935 by the Aw family of Tiger Balm fame. Heiress Sally Aw started a foundation to redevelop and restore the Chinese Renaissance-

The Vancouver Academy of Music is part of a partnership to turn the historic Haw Par Mansion in Hong Kong into a music academy. VAM’s executive director Joseph Elworthy (inset) says it validates VAM’s approach to musical education. style mansion, teaming up with Bing Thom Architects, the Royal Conservatory of Music and VAM on a $22-million bid for a music academy. In April, when the Hong Kong government announced that they’d earned the honour, it was front-page news. “The scrutiny of the Hong Kong government was considerable. They went through the business plan with a fine tooth comb and it validates what we’ve been doing.” There’s a great demand for musical education in Hong Kong, where every child studies music and plays an instrument. However,

Elworthy says, “the goals of music in terms of personal development are unexplored. We plan to introduce something very different.… Music for me was a passion on equal footing with sports.” The first phase is Thom’s. He’s spearheading the conservation efforts; structurally the mansion’s in good shape; the challenge is finding the craftspeople who specialize in heritage design techniques. (The stained glass expert is from Manilla, for instance.) Then, it’s up to VAM and the conservatory to come up with the academy’s programming, which will start in

an interim location next January. It’s hoped that the first students will be welcomed into the mansion in 2017. There will also be opportunities fro music exchanges for teachers and students. “I’m so excited about what it’s going to do for VAM,” says Elworthy. “We have 44 years of history of producing world-class musicians and delivering excellent musical standards.”

‘Text’ store not what you think Modern technology takes a backseat at Regional Assembly of Text By Kelsey Klassen

Like the Department of Safety in Anacortes, and that little gallery in Victoria called the Ministry of Casual Living,” they chime in unison, sounding more like a live reading of the academic calendar for Hogwarts. “We wanted it to sound really official, but still be really silly.” Their chemistry is an obvious source of how a mere “card store” can survive a recession and rising area rents. They look to each other for cues, sentences are completed in surround sound, they complement each other right down to their opposing hair colours — one blonde, the other brunette. They even have contrasting design styles. “Some are collaborative, some are definitely Brandy’s or mine,” says Dolen. “Mine have a lot of text on them.” “It’s true. Brandy’s the writer.” “Becky’s the drawer.” “But you drew those typewriters that were so beautiful!” Dolen argues. “And you wrote that,” says Fedoruk, pointing to a card on the wall. No swimming at Second or Sunset beach

T

hese may indeed be the dog days of summer — dog poop days, that is. Vancouver Coastal Health is telling swimmers to stay out of the water at two popular beaches because of elevated e. coli counts. “The elevated counts are likely due to the prolonged warm weather, increased human and animal (dogs, geese, etc.) activities, particularly with the large numbers of people and boats over the last two weeks,” says a press release. Beach Closure Notices are up at Second Beach and Sunset Beach and there are also elevated counts at Jericho Beach, Ambleside Beach, Whytecliff Park and Eagle Harbour. Repeated daily sampling will be carried out at these locations until the counts drop below the Canadian Guidelines for Recreational Water Quality concentration limit for swimming. The elevated E. coli counts are not related to operation of the region’s sewerage and drainage system. Vancouver Coastal Health and City staff have been investigating to ensure that there are no system failures in the sewer system which might have contributed to the situation. Nothing unusual or untoward has been identified.

Tourism partnership Tourism Vancouver has chosen the BC Hospitality Foundation as its first official charitable partner. Tourism Vancouver will provide access to various marketing channels and work with the Foundation to find new and innovative ways to enhance its profile within the tourism industry.

New opera by Shane Koyczan Spoken word poet and performer Shane Koyczan has been commissioned to write the libretto for a new anti-bullying opera. The 80-minute opera will be based on Stickboy, his 2008 novel in verse that drew upon his own experiences. “I first approached Shane about this project in December and was so pleased when he enthusiastically agreed to work with us,” says James Wright, general director of Vancouver Opera. “Capturing the raw emotion and creativity of Stickboy will be an exciting challenge. I’m looking forward to the creative process and eager to see this work translated to the stage, with the emotional power that contemporary opera will bring to this moving story.” It will have its world premiere in October 2014 at the Vancouver Playhouse. An adapted version will be developed for touring to schools and community venues as part of the Vancouver Opera In Schools program. “I plan to deliver a passionate and honest story,” says Koyczan. Libretto and music workshops will begin in mid-September 2013. Follow @vancouveropera or Vancouver Opera on Facebook for behind-thescenes news. Leslie Dala, Vancouver Opera’s associate conductor and chorus director, will be the musical dramaturge; award-winning stage director Rachel Peake will be the stage dramaturge. The music will be written by Vancouver-based composer Jordan Nobles, known for creating music filled with an “unearthly beauty” (Mondomagazine) that makes listeners want to “close (their) eyes and transcend into a cloud of music” (Discorder magazine). Nobles first collaborated with Koyczan on “We Were Here”, which premiered in 2009 at the Firehall Arts Centre, presented by the Cultch. In 2013, Koyczan collaborated with animators and illustrators to create To This Day, an animated short about bullying.

Two strangers meet in a line-up and... A few years later, they’re making films together

paign. They’re also hoping to add $40,000 to the pot by winning (with WE Vancouver readers’ help) CBC’s Short Film Faceoff. (The first episode of films airs on August 17; OMG!, the only BC competitor, is scheduled for 7pm on August 24, with the winner being announced on Sept. 7.) “The Birdwatcher is the story of a single mom with terminal cancer and she wants to seek out her birth mother so she can ask her mother to take care of her children when she’s gone,” says Muir. “Her mother turns out to be a well-known birdwatcher who’s not the nicest of people.” The mother, Birdie, is living in an RV park and the daughter, Saffron, camps out nearby so she can get to know her mother before approaching her. Muir says she’s attracted to writing about people who aren’t very likeable and Birdie fits that bill. Writing the Saffron character was emotionally challenging since Muir called upon her own memories of her sister dying of cancer. “It’s a film about women talking about something other than men,” says Devine during a lunch break at the Mr. Young studio in Burnaby. (Devine is a camera co-ordinator for the popular YTV series and also directs some episodes.) Muir’s script made Devine cry the first time she read it — and the second time. Her thoughts turned to a good friend who had died, leaving behind a daughter. Yet while the film is tinged with sadness — you know Saffron is going to die — both women say The Birdwatcher can’t be described as a sad film. The script works for Devine not only for its insights and emotional resonance, but also because it fits in with the need to keep costs low for the film, which they hope to start filming in late spring. The $120,000 will basically pay for such things as insurance, studios and insurance. There are a lot of other costs to cover

A

couple of years ago, Roslyn Muir and Siobhan Devine stood next to each other in a line-up of filmmakers waiting to make a pitch to the Crazy8s film festival. The West End scriptwriter and Commercial Drive television director had never met before but something clicked — more with each other than the panel of Crazy8s judges. After each of their separate pitches was declined, they decided to go ahead with turning Muir’s script into a short film. (“I liked her idea better,” Devine says with a smile.) That was OMG!, a gentle nudge at parents whose teenaged rebellion comes back to haunt them when their children start testing the boundaries that separate youth from adulthood. At this year’s Vancouver International Women in Film Festival, OMG! was given the Legacy Award for best short film in 2012. But what’s really exciting the two women is that they also won the Women in the Director’s Chair (WIDC) Feature Film Award — and the $120,000 that comes with it. The prize, administered by the Creative Women Workshop Association, is to encourage more feature films directed by women. Devine and Muir are taking that $120,000 and using to fund their newest co-venture, The Birdwatcher. Muir wrote the script and Devine will direct it as her first feature-length film. They hope to double the amount through film grants and an IndieGoGo cam-

after that, such as food for the cast and crew who will basically be working for “next to nothing.” “A first feature is a labour of love,” says Devine, who’s still doing a happy dance over the Women in the Director’s Chair announcement. The award gives them a base from which to ask for other funding, and as well as the confidence to believe they can actually pull it off. Both women will be producers of the movie, just like they were with OMG! They’ve discovered they work extremely well with one another, with each one bringing strengths and weaknesses to the table. “Writers always have this crazy fear that a director will take their script and change it,” says Muir. “When you get a director [like Devine] who gets the jokes and relates to the characters, the tone of the film is different than I had initially envisioned but better. You really have to give up your work. It becomes the director’s.” “My job,” Devine says, “is to see all of the script to lift it off the page and make it three-dimensional. I’m making it more visual.” Muir says, “I do see it in my imagination but it might not be realistic. Siobhan really knows how things can come about. I know there are trees and Work Parties Fundraisers sky [in the setting] but she can do something amazing.” Date Night Birthdays To follow the film’s progress go to Facebook.com/ Enter to win a $40 Gift Card at wevancouver.com! thebirdwatchermovie, follow them on Twitter @thebirdwatcher or on Pinterest at birdwatcherfilm. Movie Reviews In a world where voiceover actors compete... IN A WORLD...

Starring Lake Bell, Fred Melamed, Ken Marino Directed by Lake Bell Taking its title from the opening line of countless movie trailers, Lake Bell’s accomplished dramedy plunges us into a reality rarely depicted on screen: Hollywood’s lower rungs, where voiceover artists, editors and sound mixers hole up in tiny apartments, subsist on unglamourous freelance gigs, and struggle to maintain whatever foothold they’ve established. Amongst their number is Carol (Bell), an underemployed, emotionally-stunted vocal coach charged with unenviable tasks like teaching Eva Longoria a cockney accent. However, when a prima donna (Ken Marino, wonderfully dickish) blows off a voiceover gig, Carol pinch hits and proves herself equal to the task. And when she’s suddenly in contention for the most coveted narration gig in the often sexist industry, she also finds herself in direct competition with her boorish father (Fred Melamed, all unchecked ego). Given Bell’s regular gig on comedy series Children’s Hospital (plus the presence of co-stars Marino and Rob Corddry), you wait for all of this to spiral into abject buffoonery. However, the deep yearning for legitimacy shared by this subculture of strugglers keeps things surprisingly grounded. Furthermore, by incrementally revealing key details through her script’s unadorned dialogue, Bell establishes these characters’ shared history. Quite often, it weighs heavily on them. And never is this more apparent than in Carol and her sister’s (Michaela Watkins) need to pull themselves from the wreckage wrought by their domineering father. Consequently, despite its climactic comic showdown at the Golden Trailer Awards, In a World... ultimately takes the form of a belated coming-of-age story in which the closing message — “Women should sound like women. — possesses considerable resonance. — Curtis Woloschuk

Where’s the vision in this Steve Jobs biopic? JOBS

Starring Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad Directed by Joshua Michael Stern Groundbreaking and innovative are two words that have become synonymous with Apple co-founder and technological visionary Steve Jobs; unfortunately his big screen biopic is neither. Thor Ashton Kutcher, best known for portrayDiakow ing the goofy stoner from That 70’s Show and boorish prankster on MTV’s Punk’d, attempts to fill some very big shoes but ends up biting off more than he can chew. The major disappointment, whether it was director Joshua Michael Stern’s coaching or Kutcher’s desire to impersonate, is how much his forced performance comes off as a whitewashed caricature of a complicated and dynamic individual.Â

The film follows the entrepreneur’s days as a barefoot college dropout, in scenes that could have been plucked from the star’s former sitcom, to his rise to become one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. There is so much ground to cover that large chunks are merely glossed over or dropped in favour of piecemeal exchanges that always seem to involve a boardroom full of executives. The movie, however, is not without a few charms. Josh Gad is exceptional, if not better, as sidekick and protĂŠgĂŠ Steve Wozniak and several scenes epitomize what a game changer Jobs was with confident precision thanks to some bright spots in an otherwise dull script. The life of Steve Jobs is no doubt a fascinating and engaging story for film purposes; it’s just too bad the final product feels like a cobbled together movie of the week.

Celebrate 25 years of queer cinema Vancouver Queer Film Festival celebrates quarter-century with globe-spanning films By Sabrina Furminger

I

f there’s a single thread running through the dozens of films screening at this year’s Vancouver Queer Film Festival (VQFF), it’s

The Vancouver Queer Film Festival includes the Canadian premiere of the Bollywood epic Queens: Destiny of Dance, a documentary about dancers in a transwomen sanctuary.

probably this: feel something. It might be laughing, sobbing, empathy, contemplation or discomfort, but whatever the reaction, each of the festival’s 79 films is bound to whisk you away on some kind of emotional adventure. That journey is the hallmark of the VQFF, which began in 1989 as Out On Screen: Vancouver’s Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and was one of the first film festivals in the world to adopt the more inclusive term “queer. Today, the VQFF is the sec-

ond largest film festival in the city and the largest queer arts festival in the country. In a year where gay marriage has been a hot-button issue in America, and the Russian LGBT community is fighting back against ghastly violence and anti-gay legislation, the 25th edition of the VQFF presents a wide array of thought-provoking films (from more than 20 countries) that celebrate and advance queer issues. For the first time in its history, the festival will shine a spotlight on queer cinema from India. The three Canadian premieres include the Bollywood epic Queens: Destiny of Dance, about dancers in a transwomen sanctuary; In-between Days, a documentary about two transgendered friends in Kolkata who are edged into the sex trade; and Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish, a startling film about transformation and gender identity that was the final work of acclaimed actor/director Rituparno Ghosh. Comedy lovers will want to check out G.B.F.

(short for Gay Best Friend), a Mean Girls-esque teen laugh-fest starring Will & Grace’s Megan Mullally and Orange Is the New Black’s Natasha Lyonne, and The Outs, a wildly popular, Kickstarter-funded web series about urban gay life. Vancouver filmmakers will be represented by way of two documentaries: Lace Bite, about 40 women from Metro Vancouver who play a Guinness World Record-breaking hockey game to fulfill a promise made to a friend with Cystic Fibrosis; and My Other Me, Josh Laner’s look into the Cosplay (short for costume play) community. And if you crave a side of competition with your film festival experience, cheer on 12 BC directors as their short films battle for the top prize at the Coast in Queer event. The 25th edition of the Vancouver Queer Film Festival runs August 15-25 at venues around Vancouver. For the full schedule of screenings, galas, workshops, and parties, visit QueerFilmFestival.ca.

Free Will Astrology #Z 3PC #SF[TOZ r Week of August 15 ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): Normally, International CAPS LOCK DAY happens only once a year, on June 28. But in alignment with your current astrological omens, you have been granted the right to observe the next seven days as your own personal International CAPS LOCK DAYS. That means you will probably be forgiven and tolerated if use OVERHEATED ORATORY and leap to THUNDEROUS CONCLUSIONS and engage in MELODRAMATIC GESTURES. You may even be thanked — although it’s important to note that the gratitude you receive may only come later, AFTER THE DUST HAS SETTLED. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): William Turner was a 19th-century English landscape painter born under the sign of Taurus. His aim was not to capture scenes in realistic detail but rather to convey the emotional impact they made on him. He testified that on one occasion he had himself tied to the mast of a ship during a snowstorm so that he could experience its full effects firsthand. The result was “Snow Storm - Steam-Boat off a Harbor’s Mouth,” a painting composed mostly of tempestuous swirls. What would be the equivalent for you, Taurus? I’m trying to think of a way you could be perfectly safe as you treated yourself to an up-close encounter with elemental energies. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): Some years back, the Greek government launched a huge anti-smoking campaign. In response, cigarette sales spiked dramatically. When my daughter was six years old, I initiated a crusade to ban Barbie dolls from our home forever. Soon she was ripping out pictures of the accursed anti-feminist icon from toy catalogues and leaving them on my desk. With these events in mind, I’m feeling cautious about trying to talk you into formulating a five-year master plan. Maybe instead

FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS 7

OBITUARIES

I should encourage you to think small and obsess on transitory wishes. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): “Wings are a constraint that makes it possible to fly,” the Canadian poet Robert Bringhurst reminds us. That will be a good principle for you to keep in mind during your own adventures during the coming weeks. I suspect that any liberation you are able to achieve will come as the result of intense discipline. To the degree that you cultivate the very finest limitations, you will earn the right and the power to transcend inhibitions that have been holding you down. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” When I came across that quote while surfing the Web, I felt that it jibed perfectly with the astrological omens that are currently in play for you. Every website I consulted agreed that the speaker of this wisdom was Socrates, but I thought the language sounded too contemporary to have been uttered by a Greek philosopher who died 2,400 years ago. After a bit of research, I found the real source: a character named Socrates in Way of the Peaceful Warrior, a New Age self-help book by Dan Millman. I hope this doesn’t dilute the impact of the quote for you, Leo. For now, it is crucial that you not get bogged down in quarreling and brawling. You need to devote all your energy to creating the future. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): Do you know that you are a host for more than 10,000 different species of microorganisms? Many of them are bacteria that perform functions essential to your health. So the stunning fact of the matter is that a large number of life forms share your body and constantly help you in ways about which you have no conscious awareness. Might there be other examples of you collecting benefits from unknown sources? Well, do you know who is responsible for providing you with the water and electricity you use? Who sewed your clothes and made your medicine? Who

built the roads and buildings you use? This is an excellent time to take inventory of all the assistance, much of it anonymous, that you are so fortunate to receive. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): More often than not, your fine mind does a competent job of defining the problems that need solving. It comes up with concise questions that lead you in the right direction to find useful clues. It gathers evidence crisply and it makes smart adjustments as the situation evolves. But after studying the astrological factors currently at work, I’m a little concerned that your usually fine mind might temporarily be prone to suffering from the dreaded malady known as paralysis through over-analysis. To steer yourself away from that possibility, keep checking in with your body and your feelings to see what alternate truths they may have to tell you. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): By the standards of people who don’t know you well, the triumph you achieve in the coming days might seem modest. But I think it will actually be pretty dramatic. Here’s my only concern: There’s a slight danger you will get grandiose or even a bit arrogant in the aftermath of your victory. You could also get peeved at those who don’t see it for the major achievement it is. Now that I’ve given you this warning, though, I’m hoping you will avoid that fate. Instead you will celebrate your win with humble grace, feeling gratitude for all the help you got long the way. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): “All my life, my heart has yearned for a thing I cannot name.” So said French writer André Breton. I suspect that many of us feel the same way, which is kind of depressing. But the good news for you, Sagittarius, is that there will be times in the coming months when you will get as close to naming that mysterious thing as you have ever gotten. On more than a few occasions, you may be able to get a clear glimpse of its true nature. Now and then you might even be fully united with it. One of those moments could come soon.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): “Until we have seen someone’s darkness, we don’t really know who they are,” said author Marianne Williamson. “Until we have forgiven someone’s darkness, we don’t really know what love is.” Your assignment, Aquarius, is to seek out the deepest possible understanding of these truths. To do that, you will have to identify the unripe, shadowy qualities of the people who are most important to you. And then you will have to find it in your smart heart to love them for their unripe, shadowy qualities almost as much as you do for their shiny, beautiful qualities. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): Aldous Huxley was the renowned 20th-century intellectual who wrote the book Brave New World, a dystopian vision of the future. Later in his life he came to regret one thing: how “preposterously serious” he had been when he was younger. “There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet,” he ruminated, “trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair. That’s why you must walk so lightly. Lightly, my darling... Learn to do everything lightly. Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.” I would love for you to put this counsel at the top of your priority list for the next 10 months, darling Pisces. Maybe even write it out on a piece of paper and tape it to your bathroom mirror.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): The Paris Review did a story on novelist William Gass. The interviewer asked him why he wrote his books. That was “a very dumb question,” he sneered. Nevertheless, he answered it, saying, “I write because I hate. A lot. Hard.” In other words, his primary motivations for expressing himself creatively were loathing, malice, and hostility. I beg you not to use him as your role model, Capricorn. Not now. Not ever. But especially now. It is essential to your long-term health and wealth that you not be driven by hate in the coming weeks. Just the opposite, in fact: The more you are driven by love and generosity, the better chance you will have of launching a lucky streak that will last quite a while.
