Summer always sees the return of the city’s many beloved events and the 12×12 Vancouver Photo Marathon is one of them. It’s back Aug. 31 for another exhilarating round of creative challenges that is sure to inspire those driven by photography. A 35mm camera being the only requirement, recreational and professional photographers will each be assigned a 12-exposure roll of film (yes, film!). Beginning at 10am and at the top of every hour for the next 12 hours, a theme will be randomly drawn and released (pictured). At 10pm, only completed rolls will move on to the final phase of the challenge. Negatives will be developed and judged after the marathon, the results of which will be showcased at a free public exhibit with more than 700 photos on display. Tickets ($36 + fee) must be purchased in advance and include film. This year sold out in about one minute, but there IS a waitlist for late-release tickets. Ice Cream Social returns In the 1960s, bands such as Led Zeppelin and Velvet Underground played at a Davie Street club called Retinal Circus. Today it’s known as Celebrities and on September 1, it’s paying homage to its past by hosting a light-filled circus for the eyes and ears. DJs Tyler Fedchuk, Cam Dales, Trevor Risk and friends have been asked to resurrect the Ice Cream Social. The 50s- and 60s-inspired sock hop soiree got its start in the back of Shine Nightclub in 2007 and later moved to the Waldorf Hotel, where 1,000 people gathered to lament the loss of the weekly edition in January. (The Waldorf Hotel itself didn’t close but the people who made it into one of Vancouver’s most popular music and culture destinations left the East Hastings building.) With its new LED wall and ceiling pulsing to the sounds of rock n roll, blues, garage rock, tropicalia and French pop, Celebrities is making everything old seem amazingly new again.

Trial by film Friendship between actresses strengthened, not strained, by cinematic passion project By Sabrina Furminger

ho says women can’t work well together (besides anyone who’s watched more than five seconds of The Real Housewives

of Vancouver)? Throw those antiquated notions about female group dynamics out the window. Not only can women collaborate without backstabbing, cat-fighting, or squabbling, but they can elevate each other to new personal heights — and create something truly remarkable in the process. Case in point: three busy Vancouver-rooted film and TV actresses — Agam Darshi, Crystal Lowe, and Sandy Sidhu — pooled their considerable talents, contacts, and other tangible resources to bring Darshi’s script for a short film to life. “Sometimes in business, especially in film, you’ve got to suss each other out and do this stupid, ridiculous dance, and we skipped all that,” said Lowe, seated beside Sidhu at a corner table in Lowe’s Main Street restolounge, Hyde. “There was a trust already there.” Darshi wasn’t available for the in-person tête-à-tête. She was in Toronto shooting

CTV’s new cop drama Played, which is set to premiere on October 3. “It was one of those wonderful dynamics where you can lean on the person and they could lean on you,” Darshi said later in a separate phone interview. The trio met through the industry and forged their friendship on set and off. In recent years, they’d all grown more interested in exploring roles on the other side of the camera. Last summer, they stepped up their game and, with Darshi’s script for Fade Out in hand, began applying to film-friendly bodies like Crazy8s and bravoFACT. When their application for a bravoFACT grant was greenlit in December 2012, they had only a few weeks to pull the entire production together. Darshi (who co-starred on Sanctuary and recently won a Leo Award for her role in Crimes of Mike Recket) directed, while Lowe and Sidhu shared producing responsibilities. It was the first time any of these experienced actresses had attempted any of these weighty roles. “It was so scary for me, because we didn’t know what we were doing until we did it,” said Sidhu. That’s how Darshi remembers it, too. The veteran thespian stepped onto the set that January day — the first of two at the Stanley Theatre, where more than 100 crew members and extras had shown up to work — knowing that the success of the project hinged on how well she executed her role. “It was totally intimidating at first, knowing I was going to direct all of these people,” she said. “You want to have a director that

you believe in, and I knew that I had to really trust myself and trust the vision for this project.” The potential for behind-the-scenes drama was great. Would the trio fail in their roles? Would their friendships survive the strain of film production? And how would Darshi’s husband Juan Reidinger — a Leo Award-winning actor who would edit the project — fit into the mix? But the drama was reserved for the screen. The trio supported each other during production and post, and rave about each other (and Reidinger, who Lowe described as egoless) to this day. “I can still remember watching [Darshi] and thinking how just on-point she was,” Sidhu enthused. On the rare occasion when conflict reared its ugly head, they dealt with it quickly — if not a little unconventionally. “One day [Lowe and I] were getting really stressed with each other, and [Lowe] turned to me and said, ‘Okay, we’re getting snappy, let’s do a work-out,’ and we did 20 minutes of jumping jacks and weight training and that was the height of it,” said Sidhu, laughing. “We survive the way that we do is because we’re honest with each other when it happens,” added Lowe. And they’re fiercely proud of the nineminute fruit of their labour. Fade Out is a portrait of an aging starlet having a less than stellar evening. The short stars Ona Grauer (Cult) and Adrian Holmes (Elysium) and will debut on Bravo in 2014 — as soon as it completes its festival cycle. “It’s something of a satire about celebrity culture, about what it is to be a woman who is aging in front of the camera, and what it is to play that private side of you versus that public side of you,” explained Darshi. In order to bring Darshi’s compelling vision to the screen, the team had to rely on

more than each other. They welcomed able assistance from friends and family, as well as crew members from shows they’ve worked on (including a handful from Lowe’s recently wrapped TV gig, Primeval: New World). “We’ve been [in Vancouver] long enough that we’ve really developed some wonderful relationships with people that they were 100 per cent on board when we decided to make this film,” says Darshi. “The production value is really high and that’s not something that’s easy to pull off when it’s your first time producing and your first time directing.” A couple of Darshi’s fans even drove up from the States to volunteer as extras. The entire whirlwind experience has whet the trio’s appetites for DIY filmmaking endeavors. “At the cast and crew screening, I just went to the back and watched everyone watch it, and seeing them smile and seeing that they were so proud to be part of [Fade Out], my first thought was, ‘Again! Again! I want to do it again,’” said Sidhu, who is slated to appear on CBS’ Intelligence. And she may soon have her chance: Darshi is penning a couple of features with her writing partner, Vancouver-based actress Leena Munro, and Sidhu and Lowe are contemplating future producing and directing projects. Still, they’re all committed to their thriving careers in front of the camera, too. “I get to do my craft, which is making somebody else’s character come to life, but I want somebody else to make the characters that I have in my head come to life, and I don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied without both again,” said Lowe. “Also, I don’t feel like sitting around waiting for the phone to ring, and why should I?”

Spinning webs Web series scene flourishes in wake of film & TV slowdown By Sabrina Furminger

hile the local film and TV industry wrestles with a well-documented slowdown, scrappy talents from both sides of the camera aren’t twiddling their thumbs or staring wistfully at their smartphones. Instead, many are applying their ample abilities to a segment of the biz that’s experiencing rapid growth: the brave new world of web-based serials. In the online entertainment sphere, Vancouver is a bustling frontier town, and our homegrown filmmakers are creating some of the most popular series on the ‘net. “It’s exciting because we’re in the beginning stages [of web series], and the people that are involved are really passionate and keen and helping it grow,” said Krista Rand, a film and TV actress turned web series advocate and producer. Rand is a founding member of Vancouver Web Series Community (VAN WEB COM), a networking/cheerleading/support group for local creators of digital content. In June, VAN WEB COM screened teasers and trailers from 16 locally produced web series for a packed house of creative types and online entertainment aficionados. The passion in the venue — and the stellar quality of the work screened — left Rand breathless with excitement for the future. “Everybody was really keen to meet everybody, and unlike your typical networking event, people weren’t in it to get a job,” said Rand. Beyond the fact that web series can be creative jungle gyms for underemployed artists and film students — and that there’s something freeing about working outside of a traditional studio’s sphere of influence — there’s a demand for web series from viwers, too. “There are so many people

out there who don’t have cable anymore, who just use the internet,” said Rand. Increased demand means more creators entering the fray, but Rand says competition is good for business. “With new people coming into this format, it’s challenging everyone to do quality work. It’s only going to grow bigger and better.” It can be costly to bring a web series to fruition, but local creators are pooling their resources and skills to make the most of meager budgets. “Everyone pulls together and leans on each other and says, ‘Well, I’m not doing a show right now, you can have my camera,’ and ‘Hey, I’ll volunteer and be your sound person for the weekend,’” said Rand, whose next project, entitled Last Fall of Ashes, will make its online debut later this year. “The lean times can be the best times to create.” Rand offers this shortlist of locally shot web series: • The Actress Diaries: With a downtown Vancouver restaurant as its setting, this uber-popular comedy follows the misadventures of two aspiring actresses. Meet Vancouver’s very own James Bond Lawyer to be featured in documentary By Martha Perkins

orty-six years ago, when Marvin and Susie Bond welcomed their baby son into the world, they wanted to pay homage to an uncle by giving their son the same first name, James. They were vaguely aware that a few movies had been made about a fictitious British spy but, living in a small town in BC’s south-eastern interior, they had no idea that they’d be giving their son one of the most iconic names in popular culture. “When you’re in junior high school, and school is tough for a lot of reasons, having a name like James Bond certainly wasn’t helpful,” says the successful Vancouver corporate lawyer with a laugh. “But now my clients love being able say, ‘I’ll have my lawyer, James Bond, contact you...’” In his teenaged years, Bond called himself Jim, not able to cope with all the attention, and jokes, his name garnered. He had to grow into the full name which always — always — provokes a comment. The most common question people ask is, “Did your parents know

what they were doing when they named you James Bond?” Since we’ve already answered that, above, now we get to the second most common comment: “That’s a great name to pick up women with.” Bond laughs. “If I’m brave enough, I’ll say, ‘Or guys.’” James Bond, or at least this James Bond, is gay. Next month he’s getting married to his partner, Brad Davis, a local realtor. At the wedding will be the film crew of The Other Fellow, a documentary that follows several real-life James Bonds. (A clip is available on YouTube.) Director Matt Bowyer first met Vancouver’s James Bond — apparently there’s a surgeon in Surrey with the same name — in Toronto. Bond had flown there for the birth of his twin children. Their mothers are a lesbian couple who also have an older son with Bond. It’s not quite the scene one imagines for a 007 (unless, of course, you picked up a gay vibe between Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem in Skyfall.) The irony is that Bond and Davis rarely watch James Bond movies. In fact, when trying to come up with the name of the last one, Davis describes it as the one “when that lady dies.” That lady. Bond says he sometimes calls Davis M because “he’s always trying to tell

me what to do.” Thanks to the other Bond, Bond has developed a fondness for martinis. “When people find out my name, they start sending me martinis and when free drinks are coming your way, you learn to love them.” He also loves his name. It’s a great icebreaker and no one ever forgets it. When he’s travelling in the United Kingdom, “people make a fairly big deal of it.” At US Customs, the customs official once pulled him aside so he could tell all the other custom officials that he was clearing James Bond. Canadians? “They’re pretty calm.” When he and Davis marry, neither one is tempted to change last names. Brad Bond? No thanks, says Davis respectfully. As to James Bond, “once I got comfortable carrying around the name, I’d never go back. I like seeing people smile. There aren’t too many other names that carry such a large meaning.” See story on VIFF’s James Bond retrospective on page 27.

C cities will next month debate proposals to cut the default speed limit on municipal streets to 40 kilometres per hour and to force licensing and regulation on users of motorized wheelchairs and scooters. The two proposals are among transportationrelated resolutions that will be on the floor at the Union of BC Municipalities convention in Vancouver in late September. The City of Victoria is behind the proposed cut in default speed limits from the current 50 km/h; if the lower 40 km/h default limit is adopted by the province, municipalities could still selectively designate specific roads for higher speeds. The resolution asks for provincial aid installing new signage, including for roads where the speed limit would be different from the default 40 km/h. The current default is dangerously high on some residential streets, argues Victoria Coun. Shellie Gudgeon. “Even laneways can be 50 km/h if it’s not signed. It’s far too fast for neighbourhoods and families.” Ian Tootill of the motorist advocacy group SENSE BC predicts drivers wouldn’t obey a 40 km/h limit and said there’s little evidence of low-speed fatalities or injuries that could be prevented with an

even lower limit. “The people who are driving this agenda are the people who underneath it all are anti-car,” Tootill said. “A lot of these people don’t even drive.” He said another example of bureaucratic overkill is the “laughable” proposal to regulate motorized wheelchairs and small mobility scooters. Sidney council argues seniors drive them too fast on sidewalks without any regulation. Their resolution to UBCM urges the province to regulate the use of motorized mobility aids, including wheelchair and scooters, and require training, testing and licensing of operators. The province has indicated it intends to develop a coordinated plan for safe operation of motorized scooters. The provincial coroner in 2008 issued recommendations supporting regulation after several scooter-riding seniors died in crashes with vehicles. The BC Coalition of People with Disabilities opposes the idea. “These are mobility devices that people need to get out into the community,” said executive director Jane Dyson. “Such a regulation would impede their independence.”

DFO steps up patrols against Fraser sockeye poachers Fisheries officers have doubled their patrols on the lower Fraser River to battle poachers who are illegally catching threatened sockeye salmon to sell into the black market. All fishing for sockeye has been shut down in response to a low run size and dangerously high river temperatures to ensure as many of the salmon get upriver to spawn as possible. But Department of Fisheries and Oceans area director Herb Redekopp said the “full-out conservation closure” hasn’t deterred illegal fishing. The most intense illegal fishing is happening between Surrey and Spuzzum, in various hot spots around Agassiz, Chilliwack and the Fraser Canyon. Poaching can be particularly lethal at the canyon, where salmon use backeddies to rest and an illegal net dropped in can quickly pull up a full set. Redekopp said DFO is using night vision imaging, remote cameras, helicopters and other aircraft to detect probable poachers for interception. Pent-up demand for sockeye has driven prices up and prompted much more illegal fishing than in past years, he said. “There’s a huge illegal marketplace for black market salmon.” Fishermen are getting about $20 a fish, Redekopp said, and some buyers are paying up to $50 each. Some of the fish being sold now may have been caught in aboriginal food fisheries that were legally conducted earlier in the summer but are not authorized for sale. Redekopp said many poachers busted on the river appear to have long criminal histories and may be fishing as a source of easy money to feed drug addictions.

Municipal campaign reforms A ban on anonymous contributions in municipal elections is among the reforms the provincial government is pledging to have in place the next time local voters go to the polls to elect councils in November of 2014. Details on the changes are to be spelled out in a white paper next month. But Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes said additional changes will also require disclosure and registration of third-party advertisers in local government elections. Sponsorship information will also be mandatory on all election advertising. Limits on campaign spending for candidates, organizations and third-party advertisers are also coming, but they will be held back for implementation for the 2017 elections in order to allow more time for consultations. The province is also expected to push municipal campaigns up one month, to run in the third week of October starting in 2017.

hen Anthony Sedlak launched the American Cheesesteak Co. with the Eng family in 2011, some people were surprised that the celebrity Food Network chef would choose such proletarian fare to hang his fame on. But then they ate one of his sandwiches, took a sip of his milkshake and tried to remember to breathe when they were devouring his French fries. Philadelphia may be the home of the cheesesteak, but Sedlak was quickly recognized as its adopted son. All of his passion for using the best ingredients and coming up with flavorful food combinations were put to work in creating the new restaurant concept. In the months leading up to the opening of the first outlet on Davie Street, the Engs and the high-energy chef became much more than business partners. Even the word friendship doesn’t quite come close to describing the bond between them. “He was like a son to me,” says Juliana Eng, who first met Sedlak through her brother Andy. “For weeks I’d see him every day. He was just the sweetest guy. For his birthday he cooked us dinner. That’s just the way he was.” When Sedlak died of an intentional drug overdose last July, the Engs were devastated. His loss was deeply personal. All the plans they’d been working on — finding new locations for American Cheesesteak Co., helping with the re-imagining of the Eng-owned Toronto Don Valley Hotel — were put on hold while they grieved. “We definitely took a step back and for a long time,” Juliana says. This spring, they started working on a new idea with chef Nyle Petherbridge (formerly of Sutton Place Hotel and the Metropolitan). Once again, they turned to America’s East Coast for inspiration: frozen custard. And, once again, they threw calories to the wind, coming up with a

Who hears us when we all scream for ice cream? FollowMeFoodie By Mijune Pak I don’t cry over spilt milk, but a fallen scoop of ice cream is enough to ruin my whole day. – Terri Guillemets

agree with Guillemets. I’m on one of my favourite topics: ice cream. I can have it any time of day and it is like drinking water (so I keep telling myself. ) Summer is gone, so I may be late bringing up the topic, but luckily it is available all year round even if the flavours are seasonal. Up until recently our artisan ice cream scene was lacking, and although it has improved, there is still room for more. There are many factors that make a perfect scoop. It starts with the quality of ingredients and continues with the equipment, skill, technique and execution of the ice cream maker. It’s not only the type of milk and cream used, but the fat has to be balanced without leaving a filmy residue. Most premium ice cream has around 14-16 per cent butterfat while an average ice cream has about 10-13 per cent. With simple flavours, the philosophy is usually high-quality ingredients, the fewer the better. It depends on the flavour, but I usually prefer custard-based ice creams containing egg, which is a French-style ice cream, versus an egg-free ice cream which requires no cooking, called Philadelphia-style ice cream. It is a bit of “apples and oranges” to compare, but the differences should be noted. Ideally ice cream should be made in small batches, just enough so it sells out the same day. Proper storage and keeping it covered helps prevent crystallization, but if there is fast enough turnover, crystals won’t have time to form or make a significant difference. Some ice cream connoisseurs would recommend eating ice cream between 5° to 8° F because anything below would numb the taste buds. To optimize flavour, temperature matters. As for the texture, it should have a bit of a chew without being chewy or gummy, but it also should not be fluffy with too much air which is called overrun. Ice cream is churned and, in the process, air must be incorporated to prevent a rock-solid product. It should have some air, but the final result should not be light as air. It should be well compact, and the scoop shouldn’t have ripples and curls like the advertisements show. Well-made artisan ice cream should be creamy, rich, smooth and consistent in texture, colour and flavour. Rather than telling you what is “the best”, I’ll let you be the judge. United Church buys Rhizome café as a place to celebrate inclusivity

Six-storey wood West Coast Modern building SAILs into UBC

n September 6, UBC Properties Trust and local developer Adera host the grand opening of UBC’s most sustainable residential building, SAIL, as well as the new Mundell Park adjacent at Wesbrook Village. Vancouver housing market picking up steam

he British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) released its 2013 Third Quarter Housing Forecast Update.

BC Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) residential sales are forecast to increase 3.9 per cent to 70,300 units this year, before increasing a further 6.1 per cent to 74,600 units in 2014. The five-year average is 74,600 unit sales, while the ten-year average is 86,800 unit sales. A record 106,300 MLS® residential sales were recorded in 2005. “After a marked pull back of consumer demand in 2012, the housing market is now transitioning to more elevated home buying activity,” said Cameron Muir, BCREA chief economist. “Howev-

er, the effect of sluggish employment growth this year is expected to spill over into 2014, limiting housing demand to a 6 per cent increase, with total home sales matching the 5 year average.” “The average MLS® residential price in the province has been revised from remaining unchanged to increasing 3.3 per cent to $531,700 this year. A stronger than expected decline in the inventory of homes for sale has created balanced market conditions in the Lower Mainland, causing home prices to align more closely with overall consumer price inflation,” added Muir. The average MLS® residential price in BC is forecast to increase 2.2 per cent to 543,400 in 2014.

t first glance, everything about Wim Blom’s paintings seems so simple: straight, sharp lines; easily identifiable objects — a table, a bowl, a bunch of leeks; bold, welldefined colours. There’s realism at play and but it’s not an end unto itself. And then you start thinking about the feelings the paintings induce: inner stillness; a calming interlude in a busy day; a journey to a place and time you yearn for without knowing where those yearnings come from. How on earth can a bunch of leeks resting atop a bowl evoke such a sense of grace? Well, it’s not by accident. Blom, a former National Gallery of Canada curator who now lives on Salt Spring Island, knew exactly what he was doing when, over the past five years, he started painting and drawing the 21 pieces that compose his upcoming exhibit at the Ian Tan Gallery. Each piece is planned to exacting detail before he even picks up his paintbrush. Once he’s thought everything out, he changes nothing. “When I was 50, I knew where I was going [with my paintings],” the 86-year-old says in a telephone interview. With age, even though your experiences have piled up, you can also cast aside a lot of what you’ve absorbed, focusing on what you like. “I started simplifying things. I knew where I wanted to go and I concentrated on the technique to achieve this... “I’m very observant and I look things through,” he says. That bunch of leeks on the bowl he bought when he lived in Spain? You know they’re resting on a table but he doesn’t need to paint the cracks on the table, which becomes a block of pure colour — a presence that’s felt, not shown. Yet in another painting, “Table in the Sunlight”, the interplay of light and shadow on the table’s contours give it as much life as the objects he’s placed on top of it. And yet it’s not still life for the sake of still life. A leek is chosen because of its “wonderful, clean, simple shape.” “You must always have something a little differ-

Table in the Sunlight by Wim Blom. ent in a painting, otherwise it can be ordinary and overlooked,” he says, adding later, “It’s got to be well thought out and well felt to be convincing.” The brochure for the exhibit includes a journal entry from October, 1998: “In a painting, I look for a civilized mind at work. The result should reflect carefully selected contents, be well-finished, revealing acute observation, taste, sensitivity and impact. If these qualities are badly balanced, or any of them absent, the end product is invariably second rate — or worse.” You have to hear Blom speak to know that it’s with confidence, not ego, when he says things such as “the way I’ve selected things has made [the painting] better.” His paintings resonate with people, so much so that when they buy one, they tend to want to keep it; they enjoy having it around and never tire of its image. Very few of his pieces come up for auction. As one of his few concessions to age, Blom is going to take some time off after the Vancouver exhibit. In the first six months of this year, he finished one painting, started another one and has some detailing to do on a third. “I only manage five or six paintings a year,” he says, oblivious to the fact that many people his age have done away with to-do lists. “The days of painting from nine to five and dealing with three galleries at the same time are over. But I always have to have one or two on the go.”

The cognitive, behavioral and speech therapies had worked — her son was no longer at the low end of the autism spectrum; he had dropped off it completely. Not every parent gets to rejoice in that result, however; Vaughn knows she was blessed to be able to afford the route she took with Ronin. And not every childhood disability can be mitigated with professional intervention, daily therapy and unconditional love. That’s where the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities, which runs the Easter Seals special needs camps and Easter Seals houses, comes in. The non-profit relies solely on public donations to continue their work, providing low-cost housing for families visiting for medical treatment, and camp experiences for kids. Easter Seals are also the only free local camps created for children, like Ronin, with a wide range of abilities and needs. So, while Mashiah Vaughn is the face of all the strong, determined racers at the Sept. 21 women’s-only fundraiser, she is also the face of every mother there, who just wants to keep childhood an exciting and accessible place for the 900 kids from BC and the Yukon who will now be able go to camp.

ashiah Vaughn understands the reason why each woman at the Women 2 Warrior 5k will be there, racing around an obstacle course to raise money for Easter Seals kids camps. But until now, the model and entrepreneur had never spoken about it publicly. Her son, Ronin, was diagnosed on the autism spectrum a year and a half ago, at age four. Vaughn was devastated. She worried her son would have trouble making friends. Or worse, would retreat into a world she wasn’t a part of. That night she went home and held her son for “what seemed like hours”. She had been a mom “for a long time already,” having an older son as well, but had never faced the challenges of raising a child with a disability. She poured over books on the subject and put work on hold to ensure her son had access to the best in early intervention therapies. She cancelled the TV show she was working on, Dussault Inc., and began splitting her time between Vancouver and Malta, where a private clinic specialized in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders is based. And then, four days ago, she got the news he had almost been afraid to hope for.

Music a balm to the soul Japan’s Consul-General turns to music as a way of escaping the stresses of the job

bought electronic instruments. They’d plug them in, put on their earphones and start jamming. Anyone who walked into the room would have thought they were mimes. Okada played his electric wind instrument at a Vancouver Heritage Foundation garden dinner at the Japanese consulate’s residence in Shaughnessy. As Heritage House Tour patrons delighted in the fusion of traditional and modern Japanese cuisine presented by consulate chef Takanori Iwatsubo, various performances took place on the lawn. At several points, a smiling consul-general strode up to join them, his instrument proving to be incredibly versatile — flute, saxophone, clarinet, it does it all. Like his chef, Okada easily crossed the bridge between traditional and modern genres (although you could sense an inner Dexter Gordon asking if he could come out and play...) The Japanese consultate is hosting two cultural events. Katsura Sunshine, who performs Rakugo comedy in English is at the Steveston Buddhist temple Aug. 30, the Alan Emmott Centre next to the Nekkei Centre Aug. 31 and at The Cultch Sept. 1. Shigin+, a recital of ancient poetty in a collaboration of traditional Japanese performing and visual arts, is at Pyatt Hall (843 Seymour) on Sept. 6. eiji Okada had just left his desk at the Japanese embassy in Afghanistan when the Taliban’s bomb hit. If he hadn’t gone into another office at just the right moment, he wouldn’t be alive today. As it was, he and the other embassy staff had to spend two days in a bunker. When you live in such a dangerous, tensionfraught environment, you need something to take your mind off day-to-day responsibilities and stresses. But it’s not like you can step out for an evening concert or dinner. For Okada, who in January became the Japanese Consul General in Vancouver, music was the answer. He and other staff from nearby embassies, including Canada’s, would gather regularly for a jam session. They’d play everything from jazz to pop to a little rock ‘n’ roll. However, because they’d sometimes be playing late at night, or the sounds of the city kept bringing them back to the reality they were trying to elude for an hour, each of them

Wheelchair athlete a model for what’s possible SFU student Jessica Kruger chosen as Lise Watier ambassador By Maria Spitale-Leisk

essica Kruger’s beauty is distracting as the 21-year-old with wavy blond locks and a hot pink pout opens the door of her Maillardville home. The BC wheelchair rugby athlete, who has just been chosen as the ambassador of Lise Watier’s Something Sweet perfume line, is squashing stereotypes with every move she makes. She’s about to become one of the world’s first quadriplegic models. “I think the goal is to change society’s perception of what people with disabilities are capable of doing,” says Kruger of her application. Kruger purposely made sure you could see her signature pink wheelchair in the photo she submitted for the contest. The winner was determined by online voting. Six years ago, Kruger was 15 and earning spending money by painting houses. While standing on the second storey of a house, she suddenly blacked out and fell 20 feet to the

ground below. She awoke to the sounds of panicked screams and the sirens of the ambulance coming to take her to the hospital. Kruger spent five months recovering from her accident at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver. Afterwards, she was an outpatient for another five months, during which time she was introduced to wheelchair sports. The one-time basketball and softball athlete couldn’t fathom playing competitive sports again. And because of the nature of her injury — Kruger broke her neck in four places and damaged her spine in three spots — she knew that playing basketball was out of the question. In the end, it was wheelchair rugby that resonated with Kruger. “Honestly, it’s just an incredible community of people,” she says. “And I like the contact aspect of it.” Wheelchair rugby — which also goes by the moniker “murderball” — is played on a regulation basketball court. Players score points by wheeling with the ball past cones in the end zone. One of the obstacles in the sport is having to dribble the ball every 10 seconds. Kruger is currently the only female and youngest player on the coed, provincial wheelchair rugby team. She plays on the develop-

ment team, which placed fourth during the national championships in May. The sport has afforded Kruger the ability to travel, something else she thought she could never do again. A year after the accident, Kruger and her sister Leah went on an African safari. “It was pretty incredible,” says Kruger of that adventure. “I was excited to see anything was possible.” Rugby and vacations were a welcome distraction for Kruger after the accident. The long-term challenges she would face didn’t really hit home until year three of her recovery. “I definitely went through a denial stage,” recalls Kruger. “I really struggled. There were recurrent health issues that were super frustrating.” Today Kruger exudes positivity. “I think my accident has opened more doors than I ever had before,” she says. She is a speaker for WorkSafeBC, educating the public on workplace safety. She has also just started working with the Rick Hansen Foundation and admires and draws strength from the Man in Motion. A fourth-year Simon Fraser University English Literature major, she also has plans to become a teacher.

Bond actress makes VIFF guest appearance By Martha Perkins

arguerite LeWars was not impressed when the man at the ticket counter asked her if she wanted to act in a movie.

The reigning Miss Jamaica, she was working for the airline when the passenger checked in. Nonplussed, she didn’t believe him until he returned and signed her up to play Annabelle Chung in Dr. No, which was being filmed in Jamaica. It turns out that he was director Terence Young and while

he gave the world its first cinematic taste of James Bond, it was, by choice, her last acting role. Born into a well-connected family — her sister was married to Prime Minister Michael Manley and her father was a real Officer of the British Empire — today she runs a successful career company in Trinidad. On Friday, she celebrated her birthday at the launch of VIFF’s James Bond gala which included a screening of Dr. No. Her son, Gregory Kirkpatrick, who lives in Vancouver, knew his mother’s visit would coincide with the 20-film retrospective and organizers were thrilled they could be there for Friday’s opening. On Aug. 30, UBC film professor Ernest Mathijs is giving an academic perspective between viewings of Octopussy and Never Say Never Again. There’s a Bond quiz night on Aug. 31 with Canada’s foremost Bond expert, Murray Gillespie. Starring: Harry Styles, Liam Payne Directed by Morgan Spurlock Following the popularity of concert films from the likes of Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers and Katy Perry, the latest big screen 3D spectacle tackles the story of boy band One Direction. The lovable rascals have enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame thanks to reality singing competition X Factor and producer Simon Cowell and their phenomenal success is traced surprisingly effectively in One Thor Diakow Direction: This Is Us. Director Morgan Spurlock, best known for Supersize Me, assembles a good chunk of stunning concert footage, candid interviews and brief band history. To say One Direction was manufactured is an understatement; all five members appeared as soloists on the hit show before Cowell had the brilliant idea to put them together as one act, but the film clearly shows these once complete strangers have used their overnight success to form a unique bond. In one rather touching scene, they’re almost pining for a suburban life away from the mobs of fans and paparazzi. It’s easy for the casual viewer to sit back and dismiss their musings as misguided but it also touches on a theme that permeates nicely amongst the superficial live show footage – the price of fame. It’s hard to really say how much of the movie is staged but there is something undeniably charming about the band and Spurlock does a credible job, possibly turning some cynical critics into aspiring Directioners.

I like to see them,” says Jadera. “She’s famous here,” says Hoppy Li who, despite retiring from the Sands years ago, likes to keep coming back to visit the friends who work there, many of whom, like him and Jadera, worked there for decades. As well as being loyal and dedicated, Prystay says Jadera “has been a joy to be with.” As to her plans for retirement, Jadera says, “Plans I will make next week.”

hen Craig Prystay’s family bought the Sands hotel at Davie and Denman in 1975, his first boss was Jana Zadera. She was a waitress in the coffee shop, he was her teenaged busboy. Thirty-eight years later, Prystay was hosting a retirement lunch for Zadera, who, after 40 years and more than a million cups of coffee, is saying goodbye to a place “that is like my home.” Last Friday was also Zadera’s 70th birthday and, if you ever want a reason to work until you are 70, you only have to look at her. She’s beautiful. “She has never been late or called in sick,” says Prystay, who’s now president of the family’s company, RPB Hotels and Resorts. “The restaurant has to open at seven in the morning and she’s the one who starts the day. By seven she’s made the coffee, put the creamers out, got the music on, turned up the lights and unlock the doors. I’ve never had to worry.” He pauses. “Tomorrow I’ll worry.” Zadera moved to the West End 40 years ago and has been working in the hotel restaurant ever since. It used to be located across from where the lobby is today, known for years as Checkers until the name changed to

0.5% TransLink sales tax?

Most of the $6.5 billion in capital spending proposed by Surrey’s Paul Hillsdon and Nathan Pachal of South Fraser On Trax would go to a $2.9-billion SkyTrain extension down Broadway to UBC and for $2.1 billion to build new light-rail lines in Surrey to Guildford, Langley City and Newton, with a B-Line express bus route south to White Rock. They also want TransLink to build a shelved $144-million transit gondola to SFU atop Burnaby Mountain. They say a half-point hike in the provincial sales tax levied only in Metro would raise $250 million a year – enough to cover the operating costs of the new lines as well as one third of the capital cost, on the assumption Victoria and Ottawa pay the other two thirds. — Jeff Nagel

Women are statistically less likely to appear on the public stage than men. This makes them harder to find. Once discovered, women are far more likely to say no and also more likely to cancel speaking opportunities. Last year, Lainey Gossip’s Elaine Lui was invited to speak at TEDxVancouver on the sociology of gossip, and jumped at the chance: “It was nothing short of wonderful. For me, in particular, because my profession is gossip blogger — it’s not journalist — a lot of people roll their eyes. Being able to have 18 minutes to defend my profession, not just for me, but for other people who are doing it well — really gave people some insight and a better understanding of my job and my blog. Being able to articulate that in a video is such a great tool.” The “infotainer”, whose new TV show The Social launches on CTV Sept. 2, adds that she isn’t surprised by the stats, but counters that TED’s gender ratio is miles ahead of the corporate world, with only 14 per cent of executive officers being female. One-minute audition videos for TED2014 are being accepted until Sept. 1. Janice Tomich helped ‘Guerilla Gardener’ Ron Finley reach the TED stage last year. This year Tomich is working with a female client on her audition. The Vancouver speaking coach has some tips for making your presentation as inspirational as possible: Don’t underestimate the amount of time it takes to create a presentation, especially practising; Don’t memorize a script. Pull out your key messages and speak to them; Remember it is all about the audience. Understand who they are, what they want to know and how they want to hear it; And work in stories — they will make your presentation memorable. A cull to arms In reply to last week’s letter suggesting the government cull seagulls: Seagulls are protected under the migratory bird act. About a month ago, we watched as workmen on the roof across from us killed three baby seagulls. We called Ottawa, but they do not have anyone here who can take action. If we do not protect all species, including the noisy and messy ones, the world will soon become a silent and sanitary place. Not a pretty thought. Mallydee

Bikes are here to stay Last Friday 5:45pm: biking through Main and Terminal, I was moving at a good pace and ran the light, not by much at all — I shouldn’t have, momentum was on my side, I motioned to the driver a “thank you wave” for not gunning it. Clear sailing right on a great night? A guy in a car takes his headphones off and starts beaking at me that I ran the light. I asked why he was so angry, and what the problem was on a clear sunny evening. It turned out I was the poster man for all biking issues in the city.
