GET OUT OF THE ROAD!
When driving around the city I get a bit frustrated with people roaming through traffic asking for money when waiting at a light: either panhandling or squeegeeing cars. Asking for money on the streets – no problem, but in the streets is where it gets me. Get out of the road, especially when the light is green as it’s a great time to rear-end someone! They saunter and chase about looking in windows asking for money and don’t seemed to bothered at all by the cars. It doesn’t help the situation, but at least in many countries the people asking for money are doing something: think clowns and mimes. Most of the time the panhandlers are not intimidating, but I have seen them linger longer with elderly drivers hoping for money. You see, the thing is, I really
don’t want to hit a person or another car, but I don’t think all drivers think the same. Recently, I saw five squeegee people descend on a car; the driver purposefully gunned it, nearly hitting one. Could the city post a big “No Panhandling” sign at Main andTerminal or one of the many locations in the city? -KFF
JUST SAY NO TO SEXY CLOWNS
The clown performances in the Cirque du Soleil show that I recently attended inVancouver were extremely offensive.Their behaviour was suggestive of sexually aggressive acts. This was especially horrifying because it was a 4:30pm show at which many young children were in attendance. Many of the jokes revolved around male clowns being attracted to a female volun-
teer’s physical appearance. At one point a clown grabbed a woman’s hand and put it down the front of his pants. A clown also implied that he was flashing a woman by ripping off the outer layer of his clothing and saying “I want you.” Jokes were also made about the clowns becoming sexually aroused, insinuating that they had erections. Further, a clown humped a male volunteer’s leg on a number of occasions. Other demonstrations of sexually aggressive behaviour occurred, including spanking. These jokes normalize sexually aggressive behaviour in our society and suggest that they are not only appropriate, but also funny. Community shows, especially those that involve children, should not deliver harmful messages that condone sexually aggressive behaviour. –Randall Gillis

The trend was too good to be true for homicide investigators: Three consecutive years where the number of murders in Vancouver never reached double digits. As of Tuesday, police were going into the last month of this year having investigated 14 homicides, which is higher than the nine last year, six the previous year and eight in 2012. But as Sgt. Dale Weidman, a senior homicide investigator, told the Vancouver Police Board last week, the public should not be alarmed by the spike in killings.
resulting in a homicide rate 3.2 times higher than that of non-aboriginal people. Despite the findings,Weidman said his review of Vancouver’s past homicides shows no significant trends pointing to a greater number of aboriginal people being murdered or charged with murder. What’s been consistent is the so-called “solve rate,” where police have identified a suspect in a homicide who may or may not have been prosecuted. In Vancouver this year, investigators have a 69 per cent solve rate. W –Courtesy ofVancouver Courier
watched the homicide rate plummet and attribute that to a combination of coordinated law enforcement projects targeting the drug trade, disrupting gangs and putting violent criminals in jail,Weidman said. A Statistics Canada report released last week that showed almost one-quarter of homicide victims in 2014 were aboriginal. The report said the overrepresentation of aboriginal people as homicide victims was greatest in Manitoba, where the rate was nine times higher than the rate for non-aboriginal people. Of the 88 people murdered in BC last year, 14 were aboriginal,
“It looks maybe a little bit more alarming on the graph but there’s no reason to believe or any evidence to believe that we’re seeing an upward trend,” said Weidman, noting homicides across the country have steadily dropped for several years, from 611 in 2008 to 516 in 2014. Homicide rates in 2013 and 2014 were the lowest in Canada since 1966. That’s quite a turnaround from the 1990s, when Vancouver investigators dealt with 276 murders from 1990 to 1999, many of which were connected to gang violence. For the better part of the past decade, police have

What inspired you to write a book of verse? My father was a great reciter of verse. I think he was quite typical of his generation in this regard. He could rhyme off poems like The Shooting of Dan McGrew or The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. So my poems were written as a sort of tribute to my dad, who died about a year and a half ago.

You actually won’t become a “legal” senior for several years. Are you truly offended when people think you’re older than you are? I’m not offended, exactly, but I get a little miffed when I’m treated deferentially by the young. The other day in a restaurant I’d ordered something on the small side and when the server came to clear the table and saw that I’d cleaned my plate, she said, “My! Didn’t you do well!” It took all the strength I could muster not to use the C word. I know she was well intentioned, but it did sound a little like something one of the chirpier medical aides might have said to my father in his care home. Ominous.
What role did social media play in the book? I’m not much of a social media dabbler, but like pretty much everyone else I’m on Facebook, and I began posting the poems there just to amuse myself and my community of friends. I was spending long stretches with my dad, and they were a kind of therapy, I guess. So was gin. Facebook was a good testing ground for me – if my friends liked them, if they shared them, I took it as a sign that something was working. The poems were all tinkered with considerably before publication as a book, but the first drafts of many appeared on Facebook.
Did your West End neighbourhood provide subject matter? I don’t refer to the West End in any precise way, but certainly things I’ve observed come into play. The other day on Denman, I witnessed scooter gridlock on the sidewalk outside of the Tango meat emporium – one walker was also implicated – and I was sorry the book was already published because it’s exactly the kind of thing that might have found its way in. There’s a poem called (Exact) Change is Certain which is about the strange compulsion people on the shady side of 50 feel about paying with exact change. I mean – what is that about? I’m always digging around in my pockets now, as though my finding the necessary 35 cents, rather than the 50 that’s readily available, is actually going to make a whit of difference to anyone. Go into pretty much any store in the West End and you’ll see that playing out. W Bill Richardson is hosting Allanlujah, a benefit for the Performing Arts Lodge, 581 Cordova, onWednesday, Dec. 9, featuring readings by actors Allan Gray, Allan Morgan, and Patti Allan, and Bill himself. The First Little Bastard to Call Me Gramps can be found at betterVancouver bookstores.

@Jennifer_AGCTK
As much as I love the holiday season – the social gatherings and the festive air – I admittedly cringe when it comes time for holiday decorating. I love all the sparkle, but the designer in me simply can’t handle the massive interruption to my carefully curated décor. With a six-year-old daughter, I have no opportunity to skip the whole tree and stockings thing (that would be super Grinch-y), so I have to get creative with finding décor pieces that bring the feel of festive without killing my overall aesthetic. Now that December has arrived and every shop seems to be full swing into holiday mode, the panic of finding fun (and designer-approved) festive décor has set it. During my hunt I came across the beautiful wall art of Scandinavia Wolf Designs; hand-crafted by founder Kristy Hansen, each piece offers an element of natural glamour. While Scandinavia Wolf is by no means a holiday décor line, the pieces are created with a blend of handpainted gathered woods, natural gemstones, wool and feathers that offer an ideal alternative to the traditional holiday décor for a modern home, yet reveal themselves as pieces you’ll want to leave on display year round. Hansen has spent many years in the creative fields, from interior design to fashion to painting, but found her niche within jewelry design and wall art, which she has coined “jewelry for the walls.” A craft that started with children’s mobiles and

Dan Toulgoet photos has transitioned into a full collection to include chic minimalist décor for the discerning eye, Scandinavia Wolf Designs is becoming a household name for those in the know. Premiering at this year’s IDSWest, Hansen – alongside her partner Jeff – has quickly gained a strong network of supporters; you may have caught up with some of her designs at Main Street’s Fall For Local, the Kunye Collective in North Van or the recent Collective Elements in Chinatown. Scandinavia Wolf has also been invited to feature an in-
stallation at the opening gala for Mike Wollin at Shoreline Studios, as well as a pop-up with West Elm’s South Granville location on Dec. 20. If you’re looking for even more ways to give this holiday season, partial proceeds from every Scandinavia Wolf sale – year round – are donated to charity. Currently working with Covenant House, Hansen believes that the branches she incorporates into her designs represent the beauty in taking something overlooked and giving it opportunity to achieve its full beauty and potential.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m Kristy and my company is called Scandinavia Wolf Designs: a combination of art, jewelry, home décor and soon to be textiles. I’m originally from Nelson and that is where my love for nature was born. I had big dreams and felt I needed to move to Vancouver (20 years ago) to make them come true. It was a great decision – Vancouver has given me both nature and opportunity!
business started as a young child when I loved to go and collect interesting rocks; I never lost that love for nature and its treasures and I’ve always wanted to incorporate these elements into my artwork. Initially I dabbled in interior design and then fashion but I also had a desire to design jewelry. In the end I didn’t want to do just one thing so instead I combined all of my passions within my Scandinavia Wolf brand.

My music taste is pretty eclectic. You can find me rockin’ out with Elton John, groovin’ with Bob Marley, picking away on the air banjo with my bluegrass faves Old Crow Medicine Show, even shakin’ my booty with Snoop Dogg and the gang. If you could speak to a room of youth who were considering careers in the arts, what would your advice be? If you are truly passionate about creating, I think you should do whatever you can to follow your dreams. With that said, it’s a long hard journey. Digital-first menswear store expands in Gastown Niki Hope Style File
@NikiMHope A rapidly growing Montreal menswear line, featuring affordable, on-trend threads for discerning millennials, opens its newly-expanded Gastown location this weekend. Frank & Oak – founded by high school pals and East Coasters Ethan Song and Hicham Ratnan – started as digital-first store, but has moved beyond the Internet to open the doors to a whopping 13 brick-andmortar retail shops in just 18 months. The latest Vancouver location caps off nine other storefronts in Canada and three recently opened US

stores in Boston, Chicago and Washington, DC. The partners started their online store in 2012, which is comprised almost entirely of their house brand, creating a digital space that not only enabled men to make purchases, but also helped them pull together complete looks with online style advisors. “I think men are not as savvy about what are the latest trends, they don’t really follow fashion blogs or magazines,” Song explains, noting their typical customer is a 25- to 35-year-old male in the creative field (kinda sounds like half of Gastown). “The one finding that is kind of interesting is that a lot of men go shopping with their girlfriends and listen to their girlfriend’s advice, so we realized, on top
of just selling products, providing that advice was of very high value to our customers.” After launching the digital brand, the partners realized there was a need to have physical storefronts that clients could visit. “I don’t know if we expected that we were very interested in leveraging online to reach our customer, [but] over time we realized our customers did need that kind of personalized service,” Song says, explaining the need for the brick-and-mortar expansion. “We realized that our brand was important enough that people would travel to see us.” The new 2,400 squarefoot Vancouver space, a larger footprint than the previous store, will also house
a full-service barber shop and juice bar helmed by the team at local juice emporium Krokodile Pear. “Our space was designed to feel more like a community space than a store, so it’s very lounge-y; a lot of space dedicated to people hanging out,” says Song, who has a connection with Vancouver, having studied computer engineering at UBC and previously living on the West Coast for seven years. “Vancouver has a very special place in my heart,” he says. “With the space in Gastown, on Cordova, our goal was basically to bring a bit of that Montreal’s modern aesthetic and combine it with what I always perceived as being really interesting about the Pacific Northwest.” W
Ethan Song and Hicham Ratnani of Montreal menswear line Frank & Oak are expanding their retail footprint in Gastown, moving this weekend from their Abbott Street location to larger space at 316 West Cordova that will include a juice bar and barbershop.

An evolving taste of the sea at Supermarine Anya Levykh Nosh
@FoodgirlFriday SUPERMARINE SEAFOOD & COCKTAILS
1685 Yew 604-739-4677 Supermarine.ca Open Monday-Saturday, 5:30pm-2am
James Iranzad and Josh Pape have become a power
duo when it comes to new, successful restaurants in Vancouver. Wildebeest, their meaty, gamey, wild and boozy spot in Gastown draws crowds even on a Monday night; Pizzeria Bufala, their more family-friendly pizza joint in Kerrisdale, serves up excellent pies to adoring fans; and their latest venture, Supermarine, focuses on fruits of the sea and more excellent cocktails in Kitsilano. When the latter opened earlier this year, then-chef Ja-
cob Deacon-Evans designed a menu that was playful, innovative yet approachable, and vegetable- as well as seafood-forward. Dishes like “Vegetables Tony Danza,” a ribboned medley of summer squash, were as excellent as the tempura snow crab over crab salad, or the beef and oyster tartare. Hardly surprising when you remember that Deacon-Evan’s pedigree includes extended stints working with luminaries like David Gunawan (Farmer’s
Apprentice, West) and Andrea Carlson (Burdock & Co., Bishop’s). Cocktails, courtesy of Pape, matched the food, and the room, with its sea blue accents and side view of the beach, was in harmony with the other elements. Change, however, came a couple months ago in the return to Vancouver of much-lauded chef Jesse Grasso. Grasso, who originally worked with Iranzad at Abigail’s Kitchen (what
used to be in the Supermarine space), left a handful of years ago for Toronto and made a well-deserved name for himself at The Black Hoof. Having eaten there several times during his tenure, I can attest to his dab hand with the “odd bits” of butchery. Grasso returned to Vancouver and took over as concept development chef for all three of Iranzad and Pape’s properties, with a special focus on Supermarine. The menu has since gone through a complete overhaul, which has yielded both hits and misses. A special one night of ricotta ravioli ($16) came in a fragrant chili- and parsley-flecked broth, topped with cured ham hock. It was just outstanding; the broth was clean and bright, with gentle licks of heat, the ricotta was fresh and delicate, and the ham hock was juicy. It’s a dish made for cooler nights and glass of the crisp Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner (did I mention there’s an excellent wine list?) was the perfect pairing for $10. Shellfish escabeche ($10) was less impressive. While made with excellent, plump clams one night, the flavour was dull and masked that mollusc-y taste of the sea (which, while typical of escabeche in general, seems counter-productive at a seafood restaurant). Snow crab okonomiyaki ($16), a Japanese pancake infused with various
ingredients like green onion, seafood, pork, etc., drizzled with Japanese mayo and usually a sweet sauce like hoisin or a mix of ketchup, soy and Worcestershire (also known as okonomiyaki sauce) was middling. The pancake was a plain, slightly-thick round of what tasted like buckwheat, topped with crab and green onion. While the crab was lovely on its own, it was overpowered by the pancake and mayo. In general, there are more hits than misses on the menu, and dishes like whole fish tacos (market price) are fun, but the overall effect of the new menu seems to be to downplay the seafood element and let meatier dishes like the rib eye ($44) shine. Even the new brunch menu focuses less on seafood than on eggs, bacon, duck and sausages. I’m sure it’ll be delicious, as this is Grasso’s forte, but for an ostensibly seafood-focused restaurant, I’m starting to wonder if perhaps a name change might not be in order. Champagne indulgence Michaela Morris By the Bottle @MichaelaWine
I have a weakness and Champagne is its name. I mean the real stuff, the fizz that hails from the cool northeast corner of France. I love bubbles in general, but for me, there is simply nothing like Champagne. Blessed with a unique chalky soil and a marginal climate that coaxes just enough ripeness from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the region makes sparkling its top priority. Champagne is credited with perfecting the onerous technique of achieving an unparalleled fineness of bubble in the very same bottle you drink from. Yeah, I’ve drunk the Champagne Kool-Aid. And I fully intend to keep on slurping it back. The only thing that stops me from drowning in it is the price. Starting at around $50, it’s not an everyday proposition. But I don’t wait around just for the classic occasions to indulge in a bottle. I’ve become quite adept at finding excuses to crack a bottle. The holiday season in particular gives me plenty of opportunity to indulge. I’ll deal with my bank account in the NewYear.
The thing about Champagne is that the big houses put a lot into marketing and their efforts have succeeded. Brand loyalty is strong. My duty is to remain unbiased, so I make an effort to try them all. I rounded up some of my favourite non-vintages for those moments when you need to give in. This is the result of serious study.

CRAFT BEER
Are independent growler fill stations good for craft brewers? “first of its kind” and the first “in Vancouver to offer beers from more than one brewery” – 38 beers in total, including local and international craft beer. It was a fine idea, in theory. Craft beer is booming, growlers are trendy and the densely populated downtown core has a dearth of locations to fill them up. Malone’s saw an opportunity to quickly capitalize on the trend.
Stephen Smysnuik The Growler @TheGrowlerBC
At noon on Friday, Nov. 13, Malone’s Social Lounge and Taphouse Vancouver sent a press release to media outlets, announcing its new offsales growler filling station. The downtown pub claimed that the station would be the
It was too quick, though. It’s currently illegal for private liquor and off-sales retailers to sell re-packaged alcohol, including refilled growlers. By 4:30pm that same Friday, Malone’s had sent another email announcing that the growler fill station would be put on hold “due to licensing issues.” No one at Malone’s was available for comment on this story, so I don’t know

Road 13 Pinot Noir 2012 $21.61 plus tax & deposit
Our Sauvignon Blanc has a lovely pale yellow colour. It is rich and aromatic with intense scents of fruit (gooseberry, passion fruit, green tomato, wild strawberry and lemon). It also displays floral nuances (honeysuckle), and a mineral “flinty” scent from the limestone soil. It is very fresh on the palate with a good acidity and a natural hint of CO2 which gives it freshness. Rich, round and well-balanced finish.
This Pinot Noir has a gorgeous light red brick color. The nose is lifted and complex with notes of cherry, rhubarb, black tea, soya sauce and cedar. On the palate it is soft with refreshing acidity, light to medium body and fine tannins. A well-balanced Okanagan Pinot Noir that offers classical savory flavors of sour cherries, plum and forest floor.

what happened exactly, but it’s likely that the Liquor Control and Licensing Board (LCLB) got involved. In BC, only beer manufacturers and brewpubs with a manufacturing license are allowed to refill growlers. Any business found refilling growlers unlawfully can be penalized with a fine or temporary license suspension, according to Kelsie Carwithen, communications manager for the Ministry of Small Business, which looks after the Liquor Distribution Board (LDB). She wrote in an email that “a small number of establishments have been found selling and refilling growlers unlawfully,” though she wouldn’t give specific cases. Which means there’s clearly a desire for private liquor stores, grocery stores and pubs to allow growler fill stations. As a result, the policy is currently under review after Parliamentary Secretary for Liquor Policy Reform John Yap recommended in the BC Liquor Policy Review Final Report released in 2014, that the LCLB “allow private and public retail liquor stores to sell growlers (refillable bottles) and operation refilling stations.” Growler filling stations are popular in Washington and Oregon, and both Alberta and Manitoba allow them as well. But there’s less support for these establishments in BC. Ken Beattie, executive director of the BC Craft Brewers Guild, was surprised byYap’s recommendation. The BCCBG had stated they were against such filling stations while taking part in the review, primarily because it would take revenue away from the breweries themselves. “For a small brewery,
[growler filling stations are] kind of the lifeblood when you get started,” Beattie says. “Distribution is expensive. All these things are expensive, and if you don’t have the capital get into every part of the market you’d like to get in, you can fund the rest of the investment… through your tasting lounge or through your growler station.” Not everyone agrees. At the time of liquor policy review, Adam Chapburn, then-president of CAMRA’s Vancouver chapter, wrote on CAMRA’s website, “It’s silly to assume that it’s going to take away business. The concept of growler fills at liquor stores seems like a good one because many people who can justify going to the brewery itself are usually extremely local. “I live in Surrey, and if you want a growler fill here that isn’t Red Racer you’re looking at going to Delta, or New West. I don’t even own a growler because it’s so impractical to fill.” Convenience is certainly a benefit, but price and quality would not be. For other retailers to turn a profit on a growler fill, it would likely need to be marked up to degree that would make it more expensive than a six-pack – which is arguably more convenient, and offers fresher beer. “I also don’t see how it’ll be profitable for anybody to do it. It’s profitable for people to do it because it’s our beer. For other people to do this, the growlers would need to be priced pretty high,” says Ben Coli, owner and head brewer of Dageraad Brewing. “And it’ll be less fresh. It’ll be newer beer, but it’ll be oxidized if they’re not filling
it properly, and I’m pretty confident that they won’t be filling it properly. Are these stores going to invest the kind of money it takes to get proper growler fillers?” Brewers and brewery owners are notoriously fickle about quality and freshness – and rightfully so.These are the major advantages craft brewers have over macro brands in the marketplace. Growlers are not optimal for packaging beer either, and if they’re not filled properly, the beer can be very easily compromised. Coli says the air in the growler must be pushed out with CO2 to avoid staling the beer with air. Then it needs to be capped on foam to make sure there’s no air in the growler when it’s taken home. “It’s not like it’s rocket science to fill it,” Coli says. “I just have no confidence that [retailers] are going to take the time and put the care in to training everybody that’s going to fill it. “A tasting room isn’t a gas station. It’s full of people who care about beer and love beer. My tasting room is anyway. Most are.” The folks at Malone’s were unavailable for comment, so it’s unknown what their plans are for training and ensuring quality. And according to Beattie, they, and retailers supporting growler filling stations independent of breweries, are missing the whole point of why growlers are popular to begin with. “The popularity has to do not with the growler or the container,” Beattie says. “The popularity has to do with going to the brewery and experiencing these completely unique products, which won’t be happening at the retail store.” W

Mint Records keeps it in the family
IconicVancouver record label celebrates the season with a ridiculously early Xmas show ALEX HUDSON @chippedhip
The music business is a fickle thing. Within the past couple of decades, the explosion of CDs has been replaced by the rise of illegal downloading, which was countered by a resurgence in vinyl sales and the growth of online streaming. On a local level, venues have come and gone, and the Vancouver scene has seen an ever-changing stream of fresh faces and new trends. Throughout it all, Vancouver’s Mint Records has held its ground, remaining a consistent staple of Canada’s indie underground. Founded in 1991 by Bill Baker and Randy Iwata, the company has thrived with a unique business model: to favour community over commercial gain, and to

Dan Toulgoet photo build a roster made up of friends. “There’s a family feeling to it,” reflects label manager Robert Catherall, speaking with Westender at Mint’s cozy downtown office
overlooking Victory Square. “Everyone is very friendly towards each other, we’re all friends, and we hang out a lot outside of work. That makes for a really solid relationship, when you know

that you can stand to be in the same room as someone for an enduring amount of time.” Of all the acts on Mint’s roster, songwriter Larissa Loyva is particularly familiar with its sense of community. She has been with the label for more than a decade, having released spectral solo albums as Kellarissa and playing in the bands Fake Tears, P:ano and the Choir Practice. When discussing her attachment to the company during an interview at the Heatley, she unknowingly echoes Catherall’s wording. “I often call it the Mint family, because it feels like a family,” she says. “I like that they’re downtown and I can swing by anytime I have a ques-
tion or just want to say hi.” This friends-first approach to business has translated into a diverse roster of eclectic acts. Although Mint was once known as a source for highenergy pop-rock thanks to back catalogue artists like the New Pornographers and Cub, the current Mint family ranges from the spooky synth incantations of Fake Tears to the vintage psychedelia of Faith Healer to the explosive garage rock of Tough Age. Even the happiest of families go through changes, however, and there have been some shakeups in recent years: longtime label manager Shena Yoshida recently departed and was replaced by former intern Catherall, while licensing specialist Baker now performs his duties from his home in Summerland and newcomer Adrienne LaBelle sometimes comes on board to help with mail orders. Catherall says that these personnel changes have made for a “smooth transition,” and the label is eagerly making plans for its 25th anniversary in 2016. Before celebrating its quarter-century milestone, Mint will be hosting its annual Ridiculously Early Xmas Party concert, which will bring seven bands to the Astoria on Dec. 5. The label is releasing a free cassette compilation entitled Hot Heros 2 just for the occasion. This party is the ultimate expression of Mint’s community spirit. “It’s a great time when everyone in Vancouver gets to forget about all of the obligations that they have to their actual family and get to hang out with their

To say Ringo Deathstarr are influenced by the fuzzed-out, droning sound of ‘90s shoegaze might be understating it. On the Texan three-piece’s fifth studio album, Pure Mood, the band seeks to reproduce the characteristic sound of bands like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, and largely succeeds in creating a reasonable contemporary facsimile. However, instead of taking their influences and pushing them further, Ringo Deathstarr seem content to merely replicate them, in the hopes their young audience won’t
be able to tell that their sound is not their own. All the trademarks of the genre are here: the soft, sweetly sung lyrics; the ambient, effects-drenched guitars; the simplistic, plodding drums; the repetitive two-chord song structure. Certainly, Pure Mood offers few surprises. The album peaks three songs in with “Stare at the Sun”, which features the familiar loudQUIETloud structure of amorphous
fun family,” Catherall explains with a smile. Loyva feels similarly. “I love going to the party and knowing more than half of the people there,” she says, adding that being in her 30s makes her particularly grateful for the label’s tightknit atmosphere. “I think a lot of people our age don’t have that kind of social circle, where they’ll go to a bar and know everyone — unless they live in a small town or something. I think it’s very important for the music community.” There’s good news for Vancouverites who don’t yet belong to this community: tickets to the party are just $12, and the Mint extended family is always welcoming to new members. THE MINT RECORDS RIDICULOUSLY EARLY XMAS PARTY
The annual Mint Records tradition returns this Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Astoria. This year’s lineup features Renny Wilson, Faith Healer, Monomyth, Fake Tears, Energy Slime, Supermoon, and Uptights, with CiTR DJs Femconcept spinning tunes in between sets. Get there early as there will be goodie bags full of gifts for the first 50 people through the doors. Tickets are $12 through BrownPaperTickets.com or at Horses, Red Cat, and Zulu Records. Mint Records will be matching the door cash and donating it to Girls Rock Camp Vancouver, Safe Amplification Site Society, and VOKRA.
droning punctuated a by big rock choruses. “Show Me the Truth of Your Love” opens with phased out guitars plucked from Sonic Youth’s “Teenage Daydream”, while Ringo Deathstarr cranks up the ‘90s to 11 on songs like “Heavy Metal Suicide”, “Big Bopper”, and “Never”. That said, the band has to be commended for taking the very best elements of the classic shoegaze sound and recreating it perfectly. Pure Mood plays like a 20-year-old mix tape of forgotten origin: the songs are familiar enough to induce nostalgia but foreign enough that you can’t quite put your finger on them. –Robert Mangelsdorf Rating:

Kokoro Dance celebrates its 30th anniversary this week with Book of Love. Peter Eastwood photo
Kokoro Dance writes ‘Book of Love’ KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen
“The book of love is long and boring.” It’s not the first sentiment that comes to mind when thinking about love, but those lyrics (written by the Magnetic Fields and sung by Peter Gabriel) were truth enough to inspire Barbara Bourget. “It just intrigued me – it was funny, it was poignant, and so true – and it spoke a certain kind of truth to me,” says the smiling Kokoro Dance co-founder, seated at a coffee shop near Cambie. In fact, rock music and the myriad perspectives on love therein served as the entire inspiration for the 30th anniversary show, Book of Love – on now until Dec. 5 at the Roundhouse Performance Centre. “There’s something about the world now,” the 65-yearold Bourget explains, thoughtfully, “that I just want to keep reminding people about love. Because really that’s all there is. Love is sometimes romantic, sometimes brutal, sometimes scary… it has a huge palette of experience within it.” Knowing the white-painted – occasionally naked – butohdriven boldness of Kokoro, though, Book of Love won’t be some cliché-laden pas de deux. Flanked by fellow dancers Molly McDermott and Billy Marchenski, backed by original music by formerVSO composer-in-residence Jeffrey Ryan (as performed by the venerable StandingWave music ensemble) and in costumes by sculptural British artist Jonathan Baldock, Book of Love will be a visceral exploration of human relationships. “That’s the essential thing we always work with,” Bourget explains, speaking as well for her husband and partner, Jay Hirabayashi. “Human relationships and creating something that’s larger than ourselves but includes ourselves, and touches other people.” It will also be a reflection of the love the couple has poured intoVancouver’s arts community over the past three decades.
Westender.com
In addition to standalone works like Book of Love, Kokoro also programs the world-renownedVancouver International Dance Festival, produces the iconic annual Wreck Beach Butoh series and has trained hundreds of dancers over the years. Bourget and Hirabayashi have also had a hand in nurturing local dance companies such as 605 Collective, events such as the Powell Street Festival, and organizations like theVancouver Symphony Orchestra through financial support or collaboration. Most significantly though, Book of Love comes at a time when Kokoro is actually fortifying its roots in the arts community. The company is about to embark on renovations to the formerW2 café and media arts space in theWoodward’s Heritage Building in Gastown to convert it into a new dance studio, and community creation and rehearsal space. “It’s going to be a resource for the arts community inVancouver,“ Bourget begins, passionately. “It’s also really going to be a wonderful thing for the Downtown Eastside. We really want to support all the artists in that area of the city for whom it’s even more difficult without the kind of resources that other artists have, to be able to work on their work in an environment that has the things one needs.” Bourget didn’t believe they would be granted the space by the City ofVancouver when Hirabayashi first applied. Ultimately, however, in 2014 their society was recommended by City staff as the lead not-forprofit tenant in the space. They moved in last December, fulfilling a 28-year dream and proving, cliché as it is, that a little love goes a long way. W
After two sold-out runs, puppeteering rock star Ronnie Burkett returns toVancouver with The DaisyTheatre and his troupe of more than 40 handbuilt marionettes. Inspired by the underground Czech puppet shows of the 1940s, The DaisyTheatre is Burkett at his quick-witted best. Hailed as one of the “geniuses of the world” by the VillageVoice, the veteran performer skewers through current
events, audience participation and his favourite characters to create a new show every night. “It’s odd to have something that returns,” muses Burkett, speaking by phone from Toronto, “but it’s the kind of thing that can.” And the critics agree: each year The DaisyTheatre is deemed an absolute must-see sensation. On this, The Daisy’s third pass through the Cultch, you’ll see scenes with favourites like waning star Esme Massengill, bullied fairy child Schnitzel,
and chanteuse Jolie Jolie alongside fresh new acts like Mrs. Clara Dribbles, a society matron who shows up sick and drunk to her own party, and an aging Dutch transvestite who, Burkett says, has been a part of The DaisyTheatre for a while, but is just now getting time in the spotlight. Burkett has also been fleshing outWalk-On Jesus into a full stand-up routine. In fact, the show, which ranges in length from 90 to 120 minutes, has more than doubled in characters since it premiered inToronto
three years ago. But, Burkett explains, it was never actually meant to grow into the international darling it has become. “It was originally a commission for the Luminato Festival and it seemed like a fun sort of festival thing to do,” says the glib 58-year-old of the production which took him a year to build. “I’d actually said to my agent, ‘Don’t sell this one; this is a one-off.’ But the response was pretty immediate.”

Spotting ‘The Birdwatcher’ Cast and crew reflect onVancouver drama premiering atWFF Sabrina Furminger Reel People @Sabrinarmf
It took more than a dozen emails – and several lastminute date changes due to filming commitments – but finally we are seated around a large wooden table in a sunlit Kitsilano café. On one side is Gabrielle Rose, a striking actress with piercing bright eyes who has appeared in every single Vancouver-shot television series of the last couple of decades (an exaggeration, but only just). Sitting beside Rose is screenwriter Roslyn Muir – fittingly wearing a bird pendant – and across from her is another familiar face from the local film and TV biz: actress Camille Sullivan (AllyWas Screaming). Director Siobhan Devine and yours truly round out the tea-swilling quintet.
They didn’t want to meet with them.” That impulse became one of the building blocks of The Birdwatcher. As the biological daughter, Sullivan explores a multitude of emotional states: yearning, grief, fury, and acceptance. “When I first read it, there was a lot of sobbing,” laughs Sullivan. “It was a very wet script.” There was something about the complexity of the role that appealed to Sullivan, as well as the fact that Saffron has a clear goal in mind. “I like characters who are really driven to something,” says Sullivan. “They might take long paths, but they’re really on a road fighting for something, and she has that fight.” What Saffron wants is someone sympathetic to look after her kids when she dies. In Rose, Devine and Muir found their Birdy, Saffron’s bio-mom who’d rather document her feathered friends than be anyone’s maternal figure.
It’s a rare opportunity to delve deep into a feature film – in this case, The Birdwatcher, which will have its world premiere at the 2015 Whistler Film Festival – with the cast and crew who brought it to cinematic life. The Birdwatcher tells the story of Saffron (Sullivan), a social worker and single mom who discovers she is dying of cancer – and Birdy (Rose), the titular birdwatcher who gave Saffron up for adoption immediately following her birth. Saffron has no other family. Birdy has no interest in being a mother. But Saffron needs someone to look after her kids when she dies, and her time is running out. The Birdwatcher has its origins in loss. Muir was inspired to tell this story after the death of her sister. She was also fascinated by expectations around motherhood. “There’s a societal norm that you have to have children, but you don’t,” says Muir. “At the same time, I had a couple of friends who had found their birth mothers, and [the mothers] didn’t want to talk to them.

REVIEW // TRUMBO
Starring Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane Directed by Jay Roach Hollywood and the ColdWar collide in Jay Roach’s new tale of famed American screenwriter DaltonTrumbo, who was blacklisted in the late ‘40s for his involvement with the Communist Party.Trumbo was part of the ‘Hollywood 10,’ a group of peers who denounced McCarthyism, and refused to testify in front of the US House of Representatives and were eventually jailed. Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, shedding any resemblance to his gritty Walter

White, takes the lead and essentially elevates an otherwise pedestrian film. Surrounded by a cast of convincing actors, including Diane Lane (Trumbo’s wife), John Goodman (film producer Frank King), Helen Mirren (gossip columnist Hedda Hopper), and Michael Stuhlbarg (actor Edward G. Robinson), Trumbo’s storytelling is basic but succinct and its characters are thin but entertaining. It’s Cranston’s amiable and flamboyant performance that serves to elevate the sometimes trashy material. The film moves breezily enough and is full of other noteworthy performances; Canadian David James Elliott’s John Wayne and Dean
O’Gorman’s Kirk Douglas are particularly cartoonish yet fun to watch.Visually, Jim Denault’s crisp cinematography lends itself well to the glossy material and Roach often strives for realism with an assortment of newsreel clips interspersed throughout the story, serving to remind us all this actually happened. Unfortunately, John McNamara’s trite script doesn’t always convey the film’s stirring themes like the superior Good Night, and Good Luck. The irony of a movie about Hollywood screenwriting lacking finesse in that department aside, Trumbo serves as a showcase for Cranston’s undeniable versatility. W –Thor Diakow

HEALTH
Eat the SAD-ness away
Get your circadian rhythms back on track with these healthy tips
Patty Javier Gomez Whole Nourishment
@WholeNourishBC It’s that time of year again! Where our circadian rhythms get totally out of whack by our damp and dark Vancouver weather. Going to sleep to darkness is nice, normal and fine, but waking up to darkness ain’t cool, especially for months at a time. The lack of vitamin D from the sun is a major bummer, and it’s something that a lot of us suffer from year after year. It’s called seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. SAD is a type of depression that happens with the change of the seasons into the cold dark months, and it’s not just exclusive to us here on the Wet Coast with our dark rainy days. Nope, this happens in other parts of the country – and other parts of the world – as well. Winter is often associated with hopelessness and death. Even in my favourite childhood book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, winter represents despair and despondency during the reign of the White Witch. That metaphor is an accurate reference to how
Continued from page 16 It was a rewarding role for Rose. Birdy is a complicated person – arguably not a very nice one – and sometimes the character with whom an actor identifies the least are the most rewarding to play, she says. “She’s a very complex character who is living in denial, so I was attracted to her because I thought she didn’t follow a standard format of how we imagine people should behave,” says Rose. “It’s interesting to me to look at these people who are imperfect, who are without a lot of sympathy, and to find the route through them and find the justification for their behaviour.” The Birdwatcher filmed over 14 days in 2013. Indie shoots are usually riddled with challenges, and The Birdwatcher was no exception. It was cold and damp in the woods. Rose used her husband’s “slightly moldy old van” as a dressing room. It was pilot season, and

some of us feel these days, with symptoms including feelings of depression, irritability, change in appetite, over-tiredness and increased stress. But mainly you will want to crawl under a blanket in a secluded cave with your Netflix, your wine, and maybe some snacks and just call it a day. Because activity levels decrease in the cooler months, this may be a contributing factor to the way we feel – being active and healthy releases endorphins which make us feel good – but perhaps the biggest leading cause is the lack of sunlight. Lack of sunlight can cause an array of issues including decreased serotonin levels and increased production of melatonin in our bodies. Melatonin helps to regulate sleep could be the reason why you feel so tired and a little off. But don’t brush off the way you feel as just the seasonal blues, take steps towards maintaining a happy healthy winter season. The first step, of course, is seeing a medical professional to see if your symptoms are the cause of a more serious underlying problem that needs some further investigation. Women are more likely to suffer from SAD, as are people living in northern countries and cities as opposed to those living closer to the equator. Ease the winter blues with these tips:
there were no drivers available, so one of the producers regularly drove an enormous equipment truck on boards through the mud, says Devine. One day, the cast and crew got rained out of their exterior location, and had to switch to interiors (and the only place they had a permit for that day was Devine’s house, so filming moved there for a short spell). “A shoestring doesn’t even describe it,” recalls Devine. “We really knew that everyone just loved the script, because otherwise they would have said no.” The Birdwatcher is a female-driven feature in a year when the film industry has been under scrutiny for the multitude of ways that women are underrepresented, under paid, and even intentionally shut out of the biz. Whistler Film Festival seems to be rejecting the industry trends. The Birdwatcher is one of eight films directed by women screening at this year’s festival. “I think we’re coming into a new era, and women

LIGHT THERAPY
This is exposure to a full light spectrum light source. The therapy requires you to sit in front of a special Lightbox for approximately 30 minutes a day. Basically, fake it until you make it as far as the sun goes.
OMEGA 3S
These help to increase serotonin levels (a feel good neurotransmitter) in your brain. Lowered serotonin levels have been linked to feelings of depression and sluggishness. Add more chia seeds, salmon and walnuts to your diet to make sure you are getting an adequate supply.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Release endorphins and feel fresh and relieve stress by participating in some sort of physical activity a day. This could be as simple as walking for 30 minutes a day. Any movement is good movement!
VITAMIN D
Known as the sunshine supplement, because it is naturally produced when we are out in the sun.You can get your dose by eating more salmon, mushrooms or with vitamin D supplements.
TRYPTOPHAN
Helps to produce serotonin in your body, the feel good chemical. Sources include nuts, seeds, chicken, turkey, salmon, trout and eggs. W are stepping up and saying, ‘No, we have stories,’” adds Rose. “And we’re flawed, too. We’re not painting these perfect mothers and perfect daughters who behave perfectly and all they want to do is be married. This is a different story, and I think it’s really important to tell.” The Birdwatcher also features Garwin Finch, Jakob Davies, Matreya Fedor, Nneka Croal, and Nicholas Carella. It’s heavy material (no spoilers, but bring Kleenex), but it’s not without hope, says Sullivan. “There are things you can’t change, and that’s hard to accept sometimes, especially if it’s really dire,” she says, her voice breaking. “But it’s also something that’s true, and I think once you accept it, you can figure out a way to make it better.” W

SEX
The court of public opinion Sex with Mish Way
@MyszkaWay On Saturday, famous porn star and blogger Stoya accused her ex-boyfriend and iconic porn star James Deen of rape. Beginning with a common meme phrase, Stoya tweeted, “That thing where you log in to the Internet for a second and see people idolizing the guy who raped you as a feminist. That thing sucks.” Followed by, “James Deen held me down and fucked me while I said no, stop, used my safe word. I just can’t nod and smile when people bring him up anymore.” Burning Angel CEO and Deen ex-girlfriend Joanna Angel showed her support for Stoya’s allegations via her own Twitter page, as did other porn stars Ashley Fires and Tori Lux, recounting on-set interactions they had with Deen that they considered sexual assault and abuse. Deen finally replied on Sunday, denying the allegations then tweeting, “I respect women and I know and respect limits both professionally and privately.” Deen was then exiled from his job giving sex advice to the feminist site The Frisky. Kink. com (the prominent leader in BDSM pornography) cut ties with his work and apparently, he voluntarily resigned from his position at the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee. On Tuesday, sex toy manufacturer Doc Johnson said it would be discontinuing Deen’s line of products, while production companies Evil Angel and Wood Rockett both said they’ll no longer work with him. This news has sent a shock through not only the porn community, but the feminist Twittersphere as well. Deen was always been viewed as the sexy, boy-next-door Male Feminist porn star, even though he has never publicly aligned himself with gender
Continued from page 15 In the new year, the lithe performer reveals he will begin work on a new show concept, entitled Forget Me Not, that will see the entire audience on stage with him for the manipulating. Before he starts that, though, he says he plans to build three more acts for The Daisy. Fascinated by puppetry since the age of seven, Burkett began creating his own shows and touring around his home province of Alberta at the age of 14. He found international acclaim in 1994 with Tinka’s New Dress and the Memory Dress trilogy and, in 2009, received the prestigious Simi-
politics. Feminists wrote think pieces about wanting their daughters to masturbate to Deen. He was praised as the new breed of mainstream male performer that actually appealed to the average woman. This event deserves a nuanced discussion, but we can’t really have one without scrutiny. That is exactly what a jury would be expected to do in a court of law when deciding a verdict had these allegations been taken to police, and not social media. However, sex crimes are extremely complicated. To be sexually assaulted by a friend, boyfriend or husband is handled much differently by both the victim and the authorities than to be attacked by a stranger. There is rarely police intervention in the former, let alone a rape kit. “Why didn’t you leave him afterwards? Why didn’t you say anything? Why did you wait to report this?”The answers to these questions can’t be understood unless the listener has great empathy. This is the crux of the rape controversy. I am a feminist. I’ve volunteered at rape crisis centers (which are essential, resourceful institutes for victims who need clout when reporting sexual assaults to the police). The crime of rape is taken very seriously in this country, unlike many other places around the world, regardless, if it’s social and not legal, criminal punishment. Furthermore, social media has so much power, as we can see by how quickly Deen’s career has changed in the days since these allegations. Was the goal of Stoya’s tweet to ignite a discourse about how and who can discuss rape the right way? Or was she trying to call out someone she considers a rapist in order to protect other potential victims? It’s impossible to know, yet important. According to most, the worst thing one could do would be to question the victim’s allegations in any capacity.
That’s “victim-blaming” and in 2015, it’s unforgivingly uncouth. But before we lay life-affecting blame, it does matter what actually happened.Without evidence, what impartial party could know, for a fact, that either person is telling the truth? The reality is none. So instead, we chose a side aligned with our own identity politics, or we say “no comment”. I know what I am saying is not the popular narrative. But the reality is that all four victims and Deen are all most likely telling their truth. All four women believe that Deen sexually violated them, yet Deen probably does not think what he did to any of those women was actually rape or a sexual violation (not that that would excuse his actions). Or, he’s convinced himself otherwise. This is the unfortunate, yet very real, contention surrounding issues of sexual assault from someone the victim already knows, or has slept with before. We have self-absorbed, selective memories. That’s what separates the movies in our brains from the ones we record in our iPhones. We are at risk of “remembering it wrong” according to someone else. He said, she said gets even more confusing with public discourse. Arguments can only be settled by looking at the unbiased evidence. So, what do you do when there is no unbiased evidence? Until we get to a place where all sexual assault crimes, no matter what the perpetrator’s relationship to the victim, or their race, class, sexual orientation, profession or otherwise, cease to interfere with the court’s ruling of the crime, then they will instead be judged in the court of public opinion. W
novitch Prize in Theatre for design. With its lighthearted humour, however, The Daisy Theatre was a departure for the man who saw a place for puppets within dark, distinctly serious subjects such as the Holocaust, AIDS and grief. “My goal, for many years, was to legitimize puppets and get them into real theatres for adult audiences,” says Burkett. “And so I did that, quite successfully, all over the world,” he laughs. “But then I was also thinking, I don’t know if that’s ultimately right. Because puppets are best when they’re subversive and dangerous and dirty – not scatological, but a bit rough around the edges.” In growing The Daisy The-
atre, Burkett says he ignited a passion he didn’t realize he had earlier in his career. “I think when I was a younger performer, in some ways, I did battle with the audience because I needed them to be the same every night so I could do the same show,” Burkett admits. “With something like this I’ve got to listen to the audience and read them throughout the whole show, and that’s what makes me want to go to work every night – the pure excitement of seeing who is showing up.” W '-+, ("*#)-+,"!$, *# %& now until Dec. 20 at the HistoricTheatre at the Cultch (1895 Venables).Tickets from $20; TheCultch.ca

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny “Charm is a way of getting the answer ‘yes’ without having asked any clear question,” wrote French author Albert Camus. I have rarely seen you better poised than you are now to embody and capitalize on this definition of “charm,” Aries. That’s good news, right? Well, mostly. But there are two caveats. First, wield your mojo as responsibly as you can. Infuse your bewitching allure with integrity. Second, be precise about what it is you want to achieve – even if you don’t come right out and tell everyone what it is. Resist the temptation to throw your charm around haphazardly.
Police in Los Angeles conducted an experiment on a 10-mile span of freeway. Drivers in three unmarked cars raced along as fast as they could while remaining in the same lane. The driver of the fourth car not only moved at top speed, but also changed lanes and jockeyed for position. Can you guess the results? The car that weaved in and out of the traffic flow arrived just slightly ahead of the other three. Apply this lesson to your activities in the coming week, please. There will be virtually no advantage to indulging in frenetic, erratic, breakneck exertion. Be steady and smooth and straightforward.
I suspect that in the coming days you will have an uncanny power to make at least one of your resurrection fantasies come true. Here are some of the possibilities. 1. If you’re brave enough to change your mind and shed some pride, you could retrieve an expired dream from limbo. 2. By stirring up a bit more chutzpah that you usually have at your disposal, you might be able to revive and even restore a forsaken promise. 3. Through an act of grace, it’s possible you will reanimate an ideal that was damaged or abandoned.
You will generate lucky anomalies and helpful flukes if you use shortcuts, flee from boredom, and work smarter rather than harder. On the other hand, you’ll drum up wearisome weirdness and fruitless flukes if you meander all over the place, lose yourself in far-off fantasies, and act as if you have all the time in the world. Be brisk and concise, Scorpio. Avoid loafing and vacillating. Associate with bubbly activators who make you laugh and loosen your iron grip. It’s a favorable time to polish off a lot of practical details with a light touch.
To the other 11 signs of the zodiac, the Way of the Gemini sometimes seems rife with paradox and contradiction. Many non-Geminis would feel paralyzed if they had to live in the midst of so much hubbub. But when you are at your best, you thrive in the web of riddles. In fact, your willingness to abide there is often what generates your special magic. Your breakthroughs are made possible by your high tolerance for uncertainty. How many times have I seen a Gemini who has been lost in indecision but then suddenly erupts with a burst of crackling insights? This is the kind of subtle miracle I expect to happen soon.
In September of 1715, a band of Jacobite rebels gathered for a guerrilla attack on Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. Their plan was to scale the walls with rope ladders, aided by a double agent who was disguised as a castle sentry. But the scheme failed before it began. The rope ladders turned out to be too short to serve their intended purpose. The rebels retreated in disarray. Please make sure you’re not like them in the coming weeks, Cancerian. If you want to engage in a strenuous action, an innovative experiment, or a bold stroke, be meticulous in your preparations. Don’t scrimp on your props, accouterments, and resources.
If you give children the option of choosing between food that’s mushy and food that’s crunchy, a majority will choose the crunchy stuff. It’s more exciting to their mouths, a more lively texture for their teeth and tongues to play with. This has nothing to do with nutritional value, of course. Soggy oatmeal may foster a kid’s well-being better than crispy potato chips. Let’s apply this lesson to the way you feed your inner child in the coming weeks. Metaphorically speaking, I suggest you serve that precious part of you the kind of sustenance that’s both crunchy and healthy. In other words, make sure that what’s wholesome is also fun, and vice versa.
Your mascot is a famous white oak in Athens, Georgia. It’s called the Tree That Owns Itself. According to legend, it belongs to no person or institution, but only to itself. The earth in which it’s planted and the land around it are also its sole possession. With this icon as your inspiration, I invite you to enhance and celebrate your sovereignty during the next seven months. What actions will enable you to own yourself more thoroughly? How can you boost your autonomy and become, more than ever before, the boss of you? It’s prime time to expedite this effort.
“Like all explorers, we are drawn to discover what’s out there without knowing yet if we have the courage to face it.” Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön said that, and now I’m telling you. According to my divinations, a new frontier is calling to you. An unprecedented question has awakened. The urge to leave your familiar circle is increasingly tempting. I don’t know if you should you surrender to this brewing fascination. I don’t know if you will be able to gather the resources you would require to carry out your quest. What do you think? Will you be able to summon the necessary audacity? Maybe the better inquiry is this: Do you vow to use all your soulful ingenuity to summon the necessary audacity?
“Once I witnessed a windstorm so severe that two 100-year-old trees were uprooted on the spot,” Mary Ruefle wrote in her book Madness, Rack, and Honey. “The next day, walking among the wreckage, I found the friable nests of birds, completely intact and unharmed on the ground.” I think that’s a paradox you’d be wise to keep in mind, Capricorn. In the coming weeks, what’s most delicate and vulnerable about you will have more staying power than what’s massive and fixed. Trust your grace and tenderness more than your fierceness and forcefulness. They will make you as smart as you need to be.
Aztec king Montezuma II quenched his daily thirst with one specific beverage. He rarely drank anything else. It was ground cocoa beans mixed with chili peppers, water, vanilla, and annatto. Spiced chocolate? You could call it that. The frothy brew was often served to him in golden goblets, each of which he used once and then hurled from his royal balcony into the lake below. He regarded this elixir as an aphrodisiac, and liked to quaff a few flagons before heading off to his harem. I bring this up, Aquarius, because the coming weeks will be one of those exceptional times when you have a poetic license to be almost Montezuma-like. What’s your personal equivalent of his primal chocolate, golden goblets, and harem?
“Unfortunately, I’m pretty lucky,” my friend Rico said to me recently. He meant that his relentless good fortune constantly threatens to undermine his ambition. How can he be motivated to try harder and grow smarter and get stronger if life is always showering him with blessings? He almost wishes he could suffer more so that he would have more angst to push against. I hope you won’t fall under the spell of that twisted logic in the coming weeks, Pisces. This is a phase of your cycle when you’re likely to be the beneficiary of an extra-strong flow of help and serendipity. Please say this affirmation as often as necessary: “Fortunately, I’m pretty lucky.”

If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
