LETS TAX THE DRUG DEALERS!

I would like to know why the City of Vancouver permits a 24-hour illegal drug mart to operate at the corner of West 3rd Avenue and Ontario Street. On a recent Saturday morning, I counted no less than 16 knapsackand cellphone-toting dealers carrying on business.

Go see for yourselves. Is this concentration of dealers part of some bizarre Council-sponsored high-density harm reduction strategy? Or does the Vancouver Police Department think its ability to search and seize, or at least break up the congregation, is hampered by criminal law standards of proof? If the latter, per-

haps City Hall can use the bylaw powers it revels in applying to others to collect a few dollars to defray its policing costs. Food cart vendors have to pay to occupy city sidewalks. Why shouldn’t drug dealers? The precedent was set when the City started licencing pot shops. “Mayor and Council Give Free Rider to Drug

Re: “BC declares war on wolves,”Vancouver Sakedown, Jan. 7, 2016. To be fair, all culls are scapegoating something for our own sins. And one wonders about a government that blissfully ignores the science about animal sentience as if it is still the 1600s. “It’s critical to avow that sentience matters. Science tells us animals have feelings, emotions, and preferences and individuals care about and worry about what happens to them and to their families and friends. We need to consider what we know about animal sentience when we intrude into their lives, even if it is on their behalf.” –Marc Bekoff, Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado and a former Guggenheim Fellow. –positively4thstreet

YOUR CITY

The dearth of downtown bookstores Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

“A town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it has a good bookstore it knows it’s not fooling a soul.” – Neil Gaiman, British author. If you even mildly agree, you may want to take a hard look around downtown Vancouver. Go ahead and try to find a street-level, general interest bookstore, selling new titles. You can’t, because as of this moment there are none. Ever since Chapters on Robson closed last June after 17 years (blaming high rent), there is not one new-title bookstore on any street in the entire downtown core, or the densely populated West End. “It’s a scandal,” says Howard White, who has successfully steered the fiercely independent, BCbased Harbour Publishing for over 40 years. “There’s no other big Canadian city so poorly served, and this is

While there are a small number of used and specialty bookstores downtown (like The Paper Hound, pictured above), stores specializing in new titles are curiously absent. Grant Lawrence photo the province with the highest rate of book-buyers in the country”. Allow me a few qualifying points before we go any further: you may have noticed the phrases “street-level”, “general interest”, and “new-title”. It’s worth pointing out that if you’re willing to go subterranean, you’ll find a small and tidy Coles Books (owned by Indigo) selling new titles in the oft-

forgotten mall underneath the Bentall Centre. The SFU Downtown Campus also has a bookstore catering mostly to students in the Harbour Centre Mall. And there’s specialty and used bookstores: Little Sisters on Davie has valiantly served the LGBT community since 1983. On the used front, the best bet downtown is The Paper Hound, an excellent, mostly used bookstore of

another era, at 344 West Pender (at Homer). They will lovingly sell you gently used classics, and have a small and well-curated selection of new titles. So where are Vancouver’s general interest, independent bookstores that specialize mostly in new books? Most survive (and some thrive) by choosing to root themselves outside of downtown, on the business

strips of residential neighbourhoods, where a community of customers can be built up around the store. Hager Books has been a staple of Kerrisdale since 1974. Black Bond Books / Book Warehouse (now the same company) has been in operation in the Lower Mainland for more than 30 years, with a relatively new store at Main and King Edward. Pulp Fiction has three locations on the West and East Side. People’s Co-op Bookstore on Commercial, founded in 1945, is Vancouver’s oldest book store, and could be the oldest bookstore in Canada. 32 Books continues to be a cornerstone of Edgemont Village. Why won’t any of them brave downtown? Joe Stewart used to own the now-closed Blackberry Books on Granville Island, and currently manages 32 Books in North Van. “The past 10 years have been particularly hard on downtown bookstores, even before you factor in the high cost of business rents. Independent bookstores depend on their commu-

nity to thrive. Maintaining a sense of community can be difficult when an area like downtown is growing and changing so quickly. I saw that in my own store as more and more of my regulars moved away.” There’s a rumour that Book Warehouse might re-open a store in the West End, possibly on Denman, which is experiencing unusually high retail vacancy rates (which could mean negotiable leases). Black Bond owner Cathy Jesson confirms they’re interested, but “the key is the right spot at the right rent.” Depending on your perspective, hope is on the horizon for new book lovers of downtown Vancouver: on Jan. 29, Indigo Spirit (essentially a boutique version of Chapters) will open its doors at 810 Granville (at Robson) where Aldo Shoes used to fit. The store will be one-tenth the size of its former Chapters cousin. It may not be enough to satisfy Neil Gaiman, but at least it’s something. $ &56!1 76,5-!2- %4 1'- 6/1'85 of Adventures in Solitude and +'- 78!-") (!0 8* 1'- .%!#3 W

My Digs: Cottage in the city

Tracey Ayton photos

Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to peek in to the ultra chic pad of local interior designer Gillian Segal, and take a glimpse at her interpretations of style, mixing glamour with modern. Her upscale take on playful meets traditional was detailed perfectly to suit her personal taste, which is what we – as designers – try to achieve for each of our clients: a beautifully designed space that is a true reflection of the personalities of those who call it home. This week we are touring a recent project of Gillian’s firm – one close to her heart, as it was the renovation and redesign of her parents’ house. Combining modern updates with handcrafted statement pieces, the overall effect is striking yet inviting. What is it (describe your house/condo/apartment): It’s a shingled cottage originally build in the 1930s. We bought it and renovated

about 22 years ago, and recently re-renovated (bathrooms, kitchen, dining room) with our daughter, who is an interior designer. Occupant: Dr. Philip and Anda Teal, and our German shepherd and Sheltie. Major selling feature: The cottage look and vibe charmed us. It’s on a private corner lot with trees for the squirrels and birds (which we love to watch) and is located in Kerrisdale. We love the updated/contemporary cottage feel.

First thing I changed: We gutted and renovated the house, adding an upstairs; we decided to keep the footprint of the house, and clad it in shingles to honour the heritage of the home. We added a bank of southernexposed French windows and doors that span the living, dining and kitchen areas. Feature I brag about: A mirror hanging in our dining room, handcrafted by our daughter, Gillian (of

Having had one daughter that is an equestrian, this piece reflects our love of horses. The décor: We are very organic people – we love animals and the outdoors – and this is reflected by what is on the walls. While I love

a more traditional cottage look, my husband gravitates towards more contemporary pieces. I love neutrals and he loves colours, so our updates were all about ways to marry both of our loves in one space. The story behind the art/antiques/collectibles: The floors are one of our favourite features of the house. They’re quarter cut oak floorboards that were salvaged from a mansion on Bellevue Drive in Vancouver; the wood had been custom milled for a ballroom, and there was sufficient wood for the entire

main level. We recently had it re-stained and it looks just as good as when we move in over 20 years ago. Downsides: Now that the children are out, it is a little big for just the two of us. Neighbourhood haunts: Blaqsheep for coffee, La Buca for dinner. Compared to your last place: Our last place was a rental. This house is full of warmth and character. Favourite apartment/ house/condo activity: Gatherings with family/friends in our kitchen/dining/living areas. W

DINING OUT

Savio brings life to an underserved ‘hood Anya Levykh Nosh

@FoodgirlFriday OSTERIA SAVIO VOLPE

615 Kingsway 604-428-0072 SavioVolpe.com Open Sunday-Wednesday, 5pm-10pm; Thursday-Saturday, 5pm-10:30pm.

The “Fraserhood,” the steadily-gentrifying neighbourhood that centres around Fraser Street between Kingsway and East 30th Avenue, is becoming a tasty place to hang out. Earnest Ice Cream, Batard Boulangerie, Los Cuervos, Masayoshi and Les Faux Bourgeois all live there, as do European Bread (Georgian flat bread, Russian baked goods), O Taho (silken tofu pudding extraordinaire), and the new Prado Kitchen. It adds up to some delicious eating, but, apart from Les Faux, there hasn’t been much for a casual and classy night out. That gap was filled with the opening of Savio Volpe back in early November. What used to be an auto body shop has been transformed into a beautiful, bright and warm wooded room that references la bella Italia in the best way possible. Forget the “traditional” shades of Tuscany and terracotta floors, this place is all about the light wood, from the grooved walls to the planked and sanded tables. It’s an elegant look that evokes something hearty and warm, without becoming a much-overused cliché. True to its Italian ethos, it’s a room that is as equally welcoming to families as it is to the more urbane groupings that seem to take over on Friday nights. No surprise, when you recall that Craig Stanghetta, the talented designer behind such rooms as Bao Bei,

Osteria Savio Volpe on Kingsway has been a welcome addition to the Fraserhood. Knauf and Brown photos Homer St. Café and Pidgin, is one of the owners. His partners are Paul Grunberg, who also owns L’Abattoir, and Mark Perrier, former EC at Cin Cin, who also worked at Two Rivers Meats, West and Cibo. Service is flawless. It’s an integrated team between front and back of house, and the symbiosis is beautiful to behold. Prices might seem a bit steep for this neck of the woods, but despite the lack of advertising on the menu as to the provenance of the ingredients, everything here is sourced exactly

as it should be. It’s simply assumed that you, the guest, understands that “of course it’s all local/organic/sustainable/seasonal.” Because, duh. There are a couple cocktails on the drinks list (Negroni and Aperol spritz, natch, $9 each), but the focus is really the wine here, and this Italian-only collection is smart, smart, smart. A solid selection of by-theglass offerings includes stunners like the 2014 Planeta La Segreta Bianco from Siciliy, a lush mouthful of Grecanico, Chardonnay and Viognier ($10) and the

Dining outside of Dine Out

ANYA LEVYKH @foodgirlfriday

As fabulous as Dine Out invariably is – and, each year Canada’s largest food and drink festival seems to improve like a good vintage in a cool cellar – there are nights when you just want to eat in peace, away from the madding crowds and three-course flurries in 90 minutes or less. For those who want to sup quietly but happily for the rest of January, here is my second annual edition of Dine Out-free dining zones.

When a restaurant already offers most of its menu for dinner at under $50, prix fixe becomes fairly redundant. This tiny space downtown near St. Paul’s Hospital is home to one of Vancouver’s most inventive and creative chefs, and a constantly changing menu. Repeat visits

worthy pork or the excellent ox tongue tonnata ($14). Some things on the menu are a surprise of a different sort. Garlic bread “all’Americano” ($6) is a nod to Grunberg’s childhood love of the garlic bread from Safeway, of all places. Before you snort too loudly, order it: it’s ridiculous how good it is. The butter is heavily infused with garlic, and each mini-loaf is thickly sliced and stuffed with slabs of fat. Wrapped in a foil bag and heated to order, it’s butter-soaked bread at its finest. Try to save a slice or are encouraged. Latab.ca

CRAFT BEER

Brewer vs. Brewer: The New Brewery Edition Stephen Smysnuik The Growler @StephenSmys

The Growler’s fifth issue is out March 1. For this one, we spoke to Ryan Parfitt of Luppolo Brewing and Andres Amaya of Andina Brewing. Because these men were complete strangers prior to this conversation, and because both breweries will be opening in the same area (Yeast Van) at the same time (this summer), we thought they’d have some insightful and compelling ideas on the city, the industry and the beer. Parfitt and Amaya sat down in Andina’s spacious future brewery – which was just an empty warehouse, save the sawdust – on Powell Street. ANDRES AMAYA: I’ve heard people wondering, like in the housing market, is the beer bubble going to burst? What do you think about that? RYAN PARFITT: To me, it’s not one of those things that’s a fad, where people drink craft beer and then go, “Ah screw it, I’m going back to Molson Canadian.” Once your palate has tasted good beer, you can’t go back. It’s like good coffee, good food, good wine. All those industries have shown that it’s not a trend or a fad. It’s more of a movement than anything else. Do you think we’re anywhere near market saturation in Vancouver? AA: Not that I know a lot about that, but I think that there’s still room for a lot more. In a month, I can go to eight or nine breweries. Then I can go, OK, I already went there, I already went there. Sometimes I go, “Ah, I wish there were more that I can explore!” So, you know, the way that I see it is this: There’s going to be a lot of breweries, even in the years ahead, and I

guess it’s the beer itself that’s going to dictate if the brewery is successful or not. The main thing is, people start developing a taste. You know what beer you like and you know what beer you don’t like. If you don’t like the beer you’re not going to go [to that brewery].

AA: More than intimidating, it’s a good challenge to have, right? Your beer has to be as good or better to keep going up. I think, y’know, Brassneck is fabulous. That’s the whole thing. It’s a challenge. If they make good beer, we need to make good beer, right?

GROWLER: Was it a happy accident that you both ended up in Yeast Van, or did you try to end up here? RP: This was my target area for several reasons, the main one honestly being cost per square foot. I knew I wanted to be in Vancouver proper. I grew up here my whole life and I don’t want to commute to work. So really there’s just this area and the Brewery Creek area that has the correct zoning. I was aiming for here, but you could say it’s a happy accident too. AA: Because I live in Maple Ridge, we were thinking of maybe opening in Maple Ridge. Then we quickly realized, no, we want to be in the middle of it, right? But after 11 months of looking for places [and finding nothing], we were really desperate and were thinking of other options. Maybe Burnaby or, you know… Then we thought, no no no, it’s got to be in Vancouver. We weren’t really aiming for Yeast Van for whatever, but when this place became available, we came in and said, “I love this place!” We gotta do it. Thankfully it worked out.

GROWLER: Have you noticed if there’s a unique style or flavour that’s being cultivated in BC, or in the Lower Mainland, versus what’s coming out of the Bay Area or Portland or Washington?

L-R: Ryan Parfitt of Luppolo Brewing and Andres Amaya of Andina Brewing. Dan Toulgoet photo stuff around. They’re desperate for space.

AA: When we saw this place and the area back there –

RP: That seems to be what everybody is telling me as well. Just find as much space as you can get. Talk to your landlord to see if they have any other buildings in the area because you’re going to run out, like, right away basically.

RP: Yeah, you have a ton of room to grow. AA: It’s overkill at the beginning, but in 10 years, we can still be here. RP: Instead of having to move and do it all over again. AA: Exactly.

GROWLER: Do you find it intimidating, like the level of quality and what you now have to match? RP: Yeah, for sure. I mean, not debilitating-ly intimidating. I always knew that I had to brew good beer if I was going to be successful in this market, but for sure it’s a little intimidating knowing

RP: I’d say the one thing in particular – I mean not that it’s not also being done elsewhere – but like barrelaged sours and that sort of beer. It’s pretty rare to walk into a brewery and not see something in barrel storage right now. Other than that, I don’t know, maybe West Coast hoppy beer, but that’s obviously not independent to Vancouver. W $ (53 /&, )-## %!/,3+%,*4 +%2%/ ',2/,!.,3105"

Manage your stress with floating People are obsessed with dieting and exercise to try to improve their health, but probably one of the biggest obstacles to optimum health isn’t avoiding that donut or getting in that extra set or rep, it is actually learning to manage your STRESS!

Research is pouring out about the negative effects of poorly managed stress and that is why we exist. Floating is probably the most efficient way to send the body and mind into an extremely deep relaxation response. And it happens literally with a lack of effort. “Trying” is exactly what we don’t want to do in the float tank. You see, floating is a practice where one lies in a small private pool of water about 10” deep. It has 900lbs of Epsom salts dissolved

into it, so you float like a cork—guaranteed. The water is also heated to remain the same temperature as the surface of your skin, and once you get settled it is tough to tell where your body ends and the water begins. It is a spaciously enclosed pool making it lightproof, and your ears are under the surface of the water with ear plugs so you cannot hear anything except your breath and heartbeat. The body and mind have a measureable and repeatable reaction in response to this unique environment. Dedicate this year to improve your stress management not just for you but for your family, coworkers, everyone else you relate to. Be the most healthy version of yourself this year physically, mentally and emotionally.

Individual and Couples Counselling Joe Ramirez Integral Counselling began in 2011. After 10 years of working within various community sectors and specialized communities, he decided to go into private practice to provide couples counselling and individual counselling to men, women, and transindividuals, straight or gay identified. From a one day a week humble office in Kitsilano, he now practices full-time at his private office located in the heart of downtown within the historic Rogers Building on Granville and Pender.

What separates Joe as a counsellor is the ease of ability to address a spectrum of complex concerns. From anxiety to loneliness; from developing men’s parenting skills and emotional language to supporting male survivors of sexual abuse; from redefining ‘self’ from a divorce to redefining ‘self’ as gay or lesbian while in conflict with religious values. His support extends to Latin-Canadian cross cultural relationships (counselling in Spanish), as well as to LGBTQ identified relationships in conflict. From swingers to polyamory, to a man and a woman rekindling intimacy together. Joe’s view is that while every person is complex, every person seeks to be known as they are…and accepted just the same. For clients, this means being received with an enduring sense of empathy and presence of safety – which some have described as “calm waters” to complex concerns. Joe maintains his commitment to community health as the board director for the Adlerian Psychology Association of B.C. Yet, his first love continues to be meeting people, in his quiet office, and making a difference.

Corb Lund comes home KRISTI ALEXANDRA @kristialexandra

It’s a half hour before soundcheck when Westender reaches Corb Lund, currently on tour with his band the Hurtin’ Albertans, in Amsterdam. This night is the second of two back-to-back shows in the Netherlands, where Lund and the band are regaling their cross-continental fans with tales about the wild and wicked Great White North. “Europeans don’t really like radio country or corporate country over here. They like some of the older stuff,” Lund explains over the phone. Whether that means classic cowboy ballads or “older stuff” from Lund’s personal discography, there’s plenty. The 45-year-old Alberta native has nine studio albums and more than 25 years of music under his belt – lest we forget his musical inauguration in 1989 with indie-

punk band, The Smalls. The group, heard primarily on college and indie radio stations through the ‘90s, temporarily reunited for a slew of shows back in 2014. “We had a really good show out here last night in Holland, there were lots of people [and] we’ve never been here before. It makes you feel good. People like it when we go overseas and sing songs about Western Canada, you know?” For those not familiar with the singer’s work, Lund is essentially the poster boy for Canadian cowboy music – chocked full of simple western chord progressions, rockabilly riffs, and lyrics that revere ranch life in the Rocky Mountains. “There’s a lot of Western Canadian stuff in our music that we sing about, and it’s kind of cool. I feel like a little travel ambassador,” he says with a laugh, a glimmer of his rural Alberta accent coming through.

Anyone who’s travelled to Europe and sewn a little Canadian flag patch onto their backpack can attest that being from the Great White North carries a certain popularity with our neighbours over the Atlantic. But, of late, Lund’s music isn’t just about being a ranchhand and firing funloving pistols. The band’s latest release, Things That Can’t Be Undone, is mired in themes of grief and emotional rawness. “There’s a lot of loss on this record,” Lund admits. The 10-track album was released in October by the Tennessee-based New West Records, which boasts having artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle, and Kris Kristofferson on its roster. “There were a lot of deaths in the family. It was a rough couple years,” Lund says solemnly. Those deaths include the losses of his father, grandmother, and young niece.

“[Writing about personal pain] is kind of how I process things, usually,” he says. But is he shy about baring all to his listeners? Not so, it seems. “It’s good to share the stuff, to air it out, with people. One of my favourite things about playing music is the communication between the audience and the band; playing to them is like instant feedback. As you’re playing you can feel it. It’s like an hour-and-a-half long, non-verbal conversation with the audience.” Getting personal, and letting the rough parts come through, is something Lund’s been working on in the last decade. What once was a bashful performance, is now a poised, self-assured act. “It takes a certain amount of experience to become confident in your stuff because when you’re younger you want to make everything perfect and shiny and put extra stuff on it, and as you get older and more confident

not only touring, but writing and recording an additional 17 songs that became Ghost Writing, a collection of narrative songs he released in November. Anyways, back to Postcards…) Every song in the collection opens with Lekman reading the date the song was recorded. “This song is a time machine,” he sing-splains in “Postcard # 1”. “A bookmark in time, a breadcrumb, a chance to undo what you want undone.”

There’s 52 of them, so as you’d expect, the songs vary greatly in quality, both in terms of songwriting and production. “Postcard # 8” features sprawling string arrangements and lush harmonies, while the instrumental “Postcard # 41” is nothing but looping patch cord static with a spacey synth over top. Many of the songs rely on samples and electronic drums (though many have no drums at all) and few feature a full band backing him. The songs are adorably small and intensely personal (as one would expect from Lekman), but here they take on the role of diary entries, with the mundane juxtaposed against the extraordinary. Tales of missed flights and shout-outs to friends’ fundraising efforts exist alongside ruminations on

lost loves and recollections of dead relatives. More often then not, the songs on Postcards hit the mark, and as a collection it represents something greater than the sum of its parts: a beautiful sketchbook by a talented artist, a journal of a natural-born story-teller. “I’d just like to say thank you for listening this year,” Lekman sings on album closer “Postcard # 52”. “I’m not taking you for granted / Thanks for just being here.” –Robert Mangelsdorf

REVIEWS // JENS LEKMAN

Postcards (Independent) Swedish troubadour Jens Lekman had a busy 2015 it seems. The ever-earnest songwriter (and Scandinavia’s answer to Jonathan Richman) managed to write and record a song every week over the course of the past year, collecting all 52 of the audio “postcards” in a single album, available online through his SoundCloud page. Postcards is that resulting collection, a concept album so ambitious and delightful, it bears comparison to the Magnetic Fields’ seminal pop opus 69 Love Songs. (What’s even more impressive is that Lekman was able to pull this off while

If there’s one thing Spring Breaks have in spades, it’s energy. That much is clear from

in what you’re doing, you kind of just let things breathe and stand on their own,” the singer reveals. Such was the case with Lund’s most recent release – which was recorded live off the floor – in the same room that once housed Elvis and Johnny Cash. “We’re not using studio trickery, we just sort of put the four of us in a room and made something and went for it. I like music that has a few rough spots in it. It’s hard to remember that when you’re making your own album because you want to make it perfect but sometimes it’s good to leave some warts on it,” the Alberta songwriter says. In fact, the singer and his band don’t even stick to a set list anymore. “It’s been years since we’ve used a set list. I like the spontaneity of that. I’ve gotten pretty good at reading audiences and sort of figuring out where the energy

their blistering debut cassette EP Wimp – put out byVictoria’s Shake! Records – which clocks in at a mere 13 minutes in length for five songs. Spring Breaks has an impressive local pedigree, featuring former members of the Riff Randels, Hotel Lobbyists, andWhat’s Hot. On Wimp, their bratty punk sound may be rough around the edges, but the catchiness of songs like “Wimp” and “ShakeThat Baby” is undeniable. This is a band that has a lot of fun, and

is; if it’s going to be a more rockin’ show, or if it’s going to be more introspective, more country,” Lund muses. “There’s a few layers of conversation going on beyond the verbal stuff.” What layers get peeled back during Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans’ performances at the Commodore next weekend, only time will tell. Just be prepared for a musically spiritual experience. “Music is the closest thing to religion for me.That, and the Rocky Mountains,” the singer says, resolvedly. It’s not hard to sense, even 10 minutes to showtime in Europe, that our poster boy for Western Canadian music is feeling a little homesick. W

that fun is infectious. The album takes a welcome pop detour for the Spector-esque “Phil and Ronnie”, where guitarist and lead vocalist Valerie Graham lets her pipes shine. It’s a shame her voice is hidden behind so much reverb and distortion on the album’s other songs. Ultimately, Wimp’s distorted lo-fi sound makes it come across as more of a demo than a finished album, and it could certainly benefit from a bit of polish. But despite the low budget production, Spring Breaks’ charm and pop sensibilities are very apparent nonetheless. This is a band with a lot of promise and more personality than most bands in this fair city. THEATRE

Théâtre la Seizième goes down the rabbit hole Nassim Soleimanpour’s groundbreaking ‘White Rabbit, Red Rabbit’ returns

KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

The premise of White Rabbit, Red Rabbit is simple: each night, a different actor is handed everything they need to know about the play in a sealed brown envelope. FEW THINGS IN LIFE ARE SWEETER THAN SUCCESS. If you’re aged 18-39 and have a passion for making artisanal goods, we can help take you from foodie to founder.

“The humour is there to make it palatable,” Antonette Rea says, getting right to the point. “Because humour is what got me through.” It’s incredible that someone with a story like Rea’s can still find something to laugh about. Once a middle-class husband and father, Rea faced a gender identity crisis before ending up in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, amidst drug addiction and work in the sex trade. But she’s a survivor. And, armed with her poetry, she sets the stage for a PuSh

Festival production reflecting on the past, with eyes set firmly on the future. Rea pitched the idea of a full-length piece to festival producers years after first setting pen to paper. The work was emotionally charged, she says, having been written in some of the most challenging times of her life. “They’re all different pictures from a bigger story,” she explains. “I’m just trying to share my experiences, telling the story in an abstract kind of way.” The interdisciplinary performance, written with and directed by James Fagan Tait, uses her street poet handle Miss Understood,

to open a broader discourse involving gender, sexuality, homelessness, disability, and oppression. Her poetry, once a coping mechanism for a life spent living and working on the streets, is now her art, and her voice. “Most people don’t have any idea, can’t imagine some of the adversity I’ve gone through. It takes incredible courage to be yourself,” she says. “We’re all related, we all have this gender playing within us. It’s the outside everyone focuses on. “But, there’s a mental part,” she continues.

Local actor shows staying power in sci-fi hit

‘The 100’ star Richard Harmon previews the third season of The CW’s hit show Sabrina Furminger Reel People

@Sabrinarmf

Richard Harmon didn’t think he was going to live past the first few episodes of The 100. In the pilot, Harmon’s character – called John #1 in order to differentiate him from John #2 – was brought in to serve a pretty straight-forward purpose: be the bona-fide bad seed in a group of 100 juvenile delinquents sent back to Earth 97 years after a nuclear apocalypse nearly wiped out humanity. Harmon is the prototypical familiar face in the Vancouver screen scene, recognizable for his dark recurring roles on such fan favourites as The Killing, Bates Motel, and Continuum. He believed his The 100 job to be a fun, albeit short-term, gig. But there was something in Harmon’s performance in that first episode that made the powers-that-be want to keep him around. “After the pilot, [the creator, Jason Rothenberg] emailed and said that he really liked what I did, and that we were going to series, and he wanted me to stick around,” says Harmon. “

“What people don’t understand is that gender identity and sexuality are two different things. It’s very difficult, because it’s very complex. It’s easier to whitewash it.You’ve got to keep an open mind.” Rea volunteers at Carnegie Hall, running a poetry cabaret and has seen a lot of positive change in the DTES neighbourhood. A firm belief in breaking down the barriers of ignorance, or as she says, “getting the word out” is now the focus of her work. “There were no role models before to show us why we are the way we are,” Rea says. “And there are going to be a whole lot coming up, transitioning younger who

“He said, ‘I’m going to give you a last name, it’s going to be Murphy, we’re going to call you Murphy most of the time, you’re going to be a bad guy for Season 1.’” And so Murphy functioned as a central ne’erdo-well over that first season, and as a flawed but increasingly nuanced ne’er-do-well in the second (if you’ve yet to experience The 100, Reel People recommends heading over to Netflix and indulging in one helluva binge). Harmon was billed as a guest star the entire time. When The CW’s megapopular dystopian actionadventure drama returns for its third season this week, Harmon will be back, too. This time, however, the Vancouver actor will be billed as a series regular. “It meant the world to me when they called and told me for season three they were going to offer me a series regular,” he says. “It was something that I never thought would happen, that I worked very hard to get, and then to finally have it was a very – It was one of the best moments of my life, honestly.” It’s a big deal made even sweeter because the first few minutes of the third season belong to Murphy (and thus Harmon) alone. “The season starts with me and the first three minutes of the season, I think, in my mind, was Jason, our creator’s, gift to me as being a series regular,” says Harmon. “It was so much

fun for me, and I couldn’t believe that they entrusted me to start the season off by myself for three minutes.” The second season of The 100 ended with the introduction of a new threat – A.L.I.E., a mysterious hologram in a killer red dress – and the prospect of war. In Season 3, Murphy

will continue on a familiar path – “on the journey of survival for himself,” according to Harmon – with one key difference. “This season, I think what everyone will be interested in seeing is seeing Murphy make decisions that don’t have everything to do with just himself,” says Harmon. “That’s very big for him

as a character. But I think now he’s grown in a way that he’s not all about just his survival, and sometimes he understands that sacrificing himself in certain situations might lead to the greater good for others.” Those are Murphy’s motivations. Harmon’s work is motivated by fear. “The thing that keeps

me coming back to [acting] is it stresses me out to no end,” says Harmon. “I get very scared and very worried about this kind of stuff, and a lot of the time I don’t have fun doing it, but that’s what keeps me coming back.”

may not understand what those who went before them had to endure.” When asked if she understands the impact of work like hers, given this revolutionary time for gender, Rea chuckles modestly and simply says, “gender has always been revolutionary.” She dedicates the show, “to all the girls who have gone before, my sisters who have had a difficult life, who suffered, who fell victim to the HIV epidemic.” “Most of the women in my trade don’t live to be my age, and I think wow, I survived.” W

“There are very few things that have ever made me go, ‘I need to take responsibility for this because I don’t like to fail in this.’” And so, fueled by fear, Harmon loves to work. He spent his two-week Christmas hiatus shooting Puppet Killer, a low-budget horror flick also starring Aleks Paunovic, Lisa Durupt, Kyle Cassie, Gigi Saul Guerrero, and Lee Majdoub. “Everyone is playing 17 except for me, and they’re all mid-30s to early 40s, and I’m mid-20s and playing a

13-year-old,” he laughs. Puppet Killer was directed by Lisa Ovies and produced by Vancouver’s gore-loving twin filmmakers, the Soska Sisters. “I think it says a lot about the production and where it’s all coming from when you’re able to get that many people on their holiday to come in and go, ‘Yes, we can do this for you,’” says Harmon. But back to Murphy. Fans of The 100 usually have strong feelings about Murphy (either they love him or they loathe him). Harmon has had to get used to more people knowing who he is. “I get recognized at least once a day just walking

around. Probably two or three, and that wasn’t something I thought would ever happen to me,” says Harmon. “I’m so grateful to the fans for watching so that I can pay my mortgage. I owe them a lot, because them watching has got us multiple seasons. Hopefully they’ll give us another one.” W

FILM & TV REVIEW // $ 0,000 IN PRIZES 4 R E V O

John Krasinski stars in Michaela Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI

Starring John Krasinski, James Badge Dale Directed by Michael Bay Don’t expect any transforming Predator drones in Michael Bay’s latest adrenalinefueled spectacle; in fact, one of Hollywood’s most divisive directors tackles a gripping true story, resulting in perhaps his most earnest and surprisingly mature movie to date. That being said, 13 Hours:The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is not without its bombastic, explosion-filled ‘Bayhem.’

Westender.com

The Office star John Krasinski, bulked up and shedding any trace of his dorky TV character persona, leads an elite group of CIA-hired American commandos who faced overwhelming odds and fought to protect a US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya after it was attacked by terrorists in 2012. An effective cast helps infuse the story with plenty of machismo thanks to a scene-stealing James Badge Dale, BC born Pablo Schreiber, and tough guy Max Martini. Breaking Bad’s David Costabile is a hoot to watch as the button-down boss who spouts amusing quips like “We have no jurisdiction in this country!”

The Benghazi siege has become a hot button issue in subsequent years but Bay wisely stays away from any political mire in favour of gripping action sequences. Naturally, by the third act, the violence becomes repetitive and the film’s patriotic plot borders on jingoistic at times. The movie won’t win any screenplay awards but Bay knows where to put the camera. Several stunning aerial shots add some breathtaking scope, a welcome change from the often claustrophobic action. 13 Hours is as subtle as a blow to the head but it packs one hell of a punch. Local economists have a solution for unaffordable Vancouver JEN ST. DENIS @jenstden

Vancouver economists have come up with some policy ideas to curb the city’s runaway home prices – but it’s questionable whether there is

any political appetite to take them up. A team of nine academics from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU) have proposed a 1.5 per cent property tax

surcharge, designed so that homeowners who live in the property and pay income taxes in British Columbia would be exempt. For example, the owners of a $1 million home would pay a $15,000 surcharge,

but if they had paid $15,000 or more in income taxes to Canada Revenue Agency that year, the surcharge would be zero. If they paid $10,000 in taxes, their property surcharge would be $5,000. Veterans, disabled people, and Canadians of retirement age would be exempt. Along with cities such as New York, London and Sydney, Vancouver has become an attractive place for wealthy people from emerging economy countries to “park” their money in real estate, especially during periods of economic or political turmoil. The policy authors envision a system where the revenue from what they have named the BC Housing Affordability Fund (BCHAF) property surcharge would be redistributed as lump-sum payments to Canadian tax filers in a designated area. However, the policy would also work if the tax revenue was returned to government. Based on vacancy data, the report authors think around $90 million per year could be raised in Vancouver. “There’s a lot of good things you could do with the revenue and we don’t have a particularly strong stand on that as long as it’s used to somehow benefit people who are struggling with prices,” said Tom Davidoff, a professor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business and one of the authors of the report. The surcharge could be applied to specific geographical areas to address, for instance, the much higher property prices in Vancouver compared with rural areas of the province. It would also provide a currently unavailable data set on which homeowners make their income

STEPHEN BURKE

A house in Dunbar, an area of the city that has seen rapid price increases for single-family homes. Rob Kruyt photo in Canada and how many properties are vacant. If property owners were allowed to offset their surcharge with rental revenue reported to the Canada Revenue Agency, the policy would be an incentive to rent out housing instead of leaving it vacant. The policy would be enforceable, Davidoff said: the same penalties for not paying the current property tax would apply. In a Jan. 12 Vancouver Sun op-ed, Rhys Kesselman, a professor of economics at SFU, proposed a progressive property surtax on homes worth over a certain amount, such as $1 million. Kesselman’s proposal would have the taxation revenues funnelled back into municipal governments for affordable housing initiatives. Like Davidoff ’s proposal, Kesselman believes the surtax could be modified for different real estate markets across the province. He also suggests homeowners could credit their BC income tax against the

property tax surcharge. Davidoff said it would be “terrific” if both policies were applied. However, there is little interest from the current BC government in intervening in the real estate market. “I think they’ve been pretty clear that the thing that they value is making sure there’s more home equity for people who own houses,” he said. Davidoff is critical of the BC government’s first-time home buyer’s grant, which allows qualifying buyers to pay less or no property transfer tax. The measure provides no relief to renters, he said, and pushes home prices higher by increasing the demand for housing. Demand to immigrate to BC is high and Davidoff doesn’t believe the BCHAF would deter new immigrants with capital to invest. “We think this satisfies the [BC] Liberals’ demand that this not adversely affect property values.” W –Courtesy of Business in Vancouver

Seaweed is the new kale Patty Javier Gomez Whole Nourishment

@WholeNourishBC So seaweed is the new kale, they say. This salty sea veggie that has been known throughout time to be a fountain of youth is becoming all the rage with foodies and health nuts alike. You might think it’s a bit weird to be eating seaweed – it’s slimy and looks like an angry sea creature at times – but if you’ve ever had sushi, you have already tasted it without even knowing it. It is the secret to vegan deserts in the form of agar-agar, used as a thickener, and has been used as

a fertilizer in coastal towns due to its high mineral content. Seaweed is a type of algae (despite being sold and marketed as a sea veggie) and is an ancient super food that was long believed to be a secret to health and longevity by our ancestors. Cultures around the world use it in many different ways. People in Japan have been using seaweed since the beginning of time, you probably know it in the form of nori, which is used to make sushi (it’s the green thing your sushi is rolled in) and is that green stuff floating in your miso soup. The ancient Hawaiians grew kelp gardens, using 60-70 species of seaweed

for food, medicine and for use in ceremonies. In China, it was prepared for special guests or kings (my how times have changed). Different types of sea veggies offer different nutritional benefits for your body, here are some of the major ones.

MINERALS

Sea veggies are packed with tons of calcium, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium and manganese. These minerals are important and incredibly essential for a variety of bodily functions, such as building strong bones and teeth, blood, nerve function, muscle and for metabolic processes. Get it in you!

IRON

CHILDREN

Iron has some very important functions in the body, one of which is helping your body make enough oxygen carrying red blood cells. Not only are certain types packed with a bioavailable form of iron, but it also comes with it’s bestie, vitamin C, which helps to increase its absorption, making this delectable slippery food the ultimate dream team.

Ask Mish: Vaginal detox myths Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay I recently read about this company called Embrace Pangaea that sells mesh balls of herbs meant to detox your vagina and uterus. One package even claimed to help with “vaginal tightening” from inserting the herbal packets for three days. Some doctors think it’s dangerous, but holistic healers say it’s fine. It’s just herbs? Do you think this vaginal detox is really all that bad? -Detox Curious I am not a gynecologist, so I am not an expert on vaginal health, but after some basic research a donkey could handle, even I can tell these things are garbage. Remember when you were a teen, first using tampons, and reading that Toxic Shock Syndrome warning on the side of the Tampax box kind of freaked you out? The advice was simple: use the right sized tampon and never leave it in for more than eight hours. My friend got TSS once. She did not realize she had a tampon left way up inside of her for over a week. She was out to lunch with her friend and projectile vomited beside the table, then passed out off her chair. If you ask me, Embrace Pangaea are a bunch of hippy freaks peddling vaginal potpourri. It’s total bullshit. A gynecologist, Dr. Jen Gunter, got word of this new

trend and wrote a very informative blog detailing all the reasons why falling for this detox is a joke. Dr. Gunter points out that the vagina is a “self-cleaning oven” and that if it needed help, it would warn you by “bleeding profusely”, itching, cramping or producing an odor. “There is no such thing as a detox or cleanse,” she pointed out, explaining that human organs have evolved to take care of themselves in partnership with the rest of the body. “[Detox and cleanse] are fake terms used by snake oil salespeople to lighten wallets.” She also explains that leaving a bag of anything in your vagina for multiple days at a time will kill the lactobacilli (good bacteria) in replacement of anaerobic (bad bacteria). Dr. Gunter calls the pearls a “nidus for infection,” then points out how all the photos on the company website of healthy discharge are in fact a sign that the vagina that emitted extracted said discharge was severely infected. “The vagina makes excess discharge when there is A) irritation, B) infection, C) an absence of good bacteria,” she wrote. “This discharge isn’t some toxic swill that the vagina was hiding that only the pearls could release.” In short, Dr. Gunter writes off this homemade medicine like the floral teabag that it is. Furthermore, as Global News reported, the inventor of these herbal pearls claims she did not consult with a gynecologist or medical

professional because it would interfere with her philosophies on natural remedies. So, she didn’t want to test the safety of her product because she knew she would be told what she was creating was unhealthy, yet still decided to market it? I guess enough backlash has caused the product to be removed from Etsy. I don’t believe in buying medicine on Etsy, do you? There are many natural and time-honoured ways to maintain a healthy vagina. Neem (Indian lilac) leaves can be boiled down and used to wash with. (This anti fungal, antibacterial, antiviral wonder leaf has been used for years.) Packing your diet with citrus fruits helps your body fight infection and keeps vaginal odour away. And, of course, when you feel a bladder infection coming on, buy a vat of pure cranberry juice, mix half the liquid with water and drink 8-10 glasses. When it comes to my vaginal health, I trust my gynecologist over a self-proclaimed psychology major. I can’t tell you what to do with your body, but what I can tell you is that I would not use these. How much of an asshole can a man be with the power of flowers as an apology? I know flowers are an OK “I’m sorry” for some things, but really how far can I push it? -Flower Power

Flowers are for impressing your female in-laws and should be used as a nice gesture – not because you did something stupid, but because you thought your girlfriend might appreciate a bouquet of white tulips on a Tuesday. I remember when I worked in a lingerie store and men would come in after a night of heavy drinking. Obviously they had fucked up royally with their wives, so desperate to buy a beautiful gift to smooth things over. Lingerie and flowers are not going to excuse your moronic behaviour that upset her. The only thing you can really do when you have pushed it too far is man up and apologize sincerely. And if you don’t feel sorry for what you did then maybe you should evaluate what you are doing with this person and quit wasting her time. In short, the furthest you can push it with flowers will probably just be up your own ass. Let me know how it goes. W

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny The next four weeks could potentially be a Golden Age of Friendship...a State of Grace for Your Web of Connections...a Lucky Streak for Collaborative Efforts. What can you do to ensure that these cosmic tendencies will actually be fulfilled? Try this: Deepen and refine your approach to schmoozing. Figure out what favors would be most fun for you to bestow, and bestow them. Don’t socialize aimlessly with random gadabouts, but rather gravitate toward people with whom you share high ideals and strong intentions.

On a clear day, if you stand at the summit of Costa Rica’s Mount Irazú, you can see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It’s not hard to get there. You can hop a tourist bus in the nearby city of San José, and be 11,200 feet high two hours later. This is a good model for your next assignment: Head off on a stress-free jaunt to a place that affords you a vast vista. If you can’t literally do that, at least slip away to a fun sanctuary where you’ll be inspired to think big thoughts about your long-range prospects. You need a break from everything that shrinks or numbs you.

A filmmaker working on a major movie typically shoots no more than four pages of the script per day. A director for a TV show may shoot eight pages. But I suspect that the story of your life in the near future may barrel through the equivalent of 20 pages of script every 24 hours. The next chapter is especially action-packed. The plot twists and mood swings will be coming at a rapid clip. This doesn’t have to be a problem as long as you are primed for high adventure. How? Take good care of your basic physical and emotional needs so you’ll be in top shape to enjoy the boisterous ride.

The city of Paris offers formal tours of its vast sewer system. Commenting at an online travel site, one tourist gave the experience five stars. “It’s a great change of pace from museums full of art,” she wrote. Another visitor said, “It’s an interesting detour from the cultural overload that Paris can present.” According to a third, “There is a slight smell but it isn’t overpowering. It’s a fascinating look at how Paris handles wastewater treatment and clean water supply.” I bring this up, Cancerian, because now is a favorable time for you to take a break from bright, shiny pleasures and embark on a tour of your psyche’s subterranean maze. Regard it not as a scary challenge, but as a fact-finding exploration. What strategies do you have in place to deal with the messy, broken, secret stuff in your life? Take an inventory.

“When I look at a sunset, I don’t say, ‘Soften the orange a little on the right hand corner, and put a bit more purple in the cloud color.’” Pioneering psychologist Carl Rogers was describing the way he observed the world. “I don’t try to control a sunset,” he continued. “I watch it with awe.” He had a similar view about people. “One of the most satisfying experiences,” he said, “is just fully to appreciate an individual in the same way I appreciate a sunset.” Your assignment, Leo, is to try out Rogers’ approach. Your emotional well-being will thrive as you refrain from trying to “improve” people – as you see and enjoy them for who they are.

The future is headed your way in a big hurry. It may not be completely here for a few weeks, but even then it will have arrived ahead of schedule. Should you be alarmed? Should you work yourself into an agitated state and draw premature conclusions? Hell, no! Treat this sudden onrush of tomorrow as a bracing opportunity to be as creative as you dare. Cultivate a beginner’s mind. Be alert for unexpected openings that you assumed would take longer to appear.

More than one-third of all pregnancies are unintended. The two people involved aren’t actually trying to make a baby, but their contraceptive measure fails or isn’t used at all. According to my analysis, you heterosexual Libras are now more prone to this accidental experience than usual. And in general, Libras of every sexual preference must be careful and precise about what seeds they plant in the coming weeks. The new growth you instigate is likely to have far-reaching consequences. So don’t let your choice be reckless or unconscious. Formulate clear intentions. What do you want to give your love to for a long time?

I was a rock musician for years, which meant that I rarely went to bed before dawn. I used to brag that my work schedule was from 9 to 5 – 9pm to 5am, that is. Even after I stopped performing regularly, I loved keeping those hours. It was exhilarating to be abuzz when everyone else was asleep. But two months ago, I began an experiment to transform my routine. Now I awake with the dawn. I spend the entire day consorting with the source of all life on earth, the sun. If you have been contemplating a comparable shift in your instinctual life, Scorpio – any fundamental alteration in your relationship to food, drink, exercise, sleep, perception, laughter, love-making – the next few weeks will be a favorable time to do it.

You Sagittarians are often praised but also sometimes criticized for being such connoisseurs of spontaneity. Many of us admire your flair for unplanned adventure, even though we may flinch when you unleash it. You inspire us and also make us nervous as you respond to changing circumstances with unpremeditated creativity. I expect all these issues to be hot topics in the coming weeks. You are in a phase of your cycle when your improvisational flourishes will be in the spotlight. I, for one, promise to learn all I can from the interesting detours that result from your delight in experimentation.

Capricorn world-changer Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and sent to jail on 29 different occasions. His crimes? Drawing inspiration from his Christian faith, he employed nonviolent civil disobedience to secure basic civil rights for African Americans. He believed so fiercely in his righteous cause that he was willing to sacrifice his personal comfort again and again. The coming months will be a favorable time to devote yourself to a comparable goal, Capricorn. And now is a good time to intensify your commitment. I dare you to take a vow.

The birds known as mound-builders are born more mature than other species. As soon as they peck themselves out of their eggs, they are well-coordinated, vigorous enough to hunt, and capable of flight. Right now I see a resemblance between them and many of you Aquarians. As soon as you hatch your new plans or projects – which won’t be long now – you will be ready to operate at almost full strength. I bet there won’t be false starts or rookie mistakes, nor will you need extensive rehearsal. Like the moundbuilders, you’ll be primed for an early launch.

You are not purely and simply a Pisces, because although the sun was in that astrological sign when you were born, at least some of the other planets were in different signs. This fact is a good reminder that everything everywhere is a complex web of subtlety and nuance. It’s delusional to think that anyone or anything can be neatly definable. Of course it’s always important to keep this in mind, but it’s even more crucial than usual for you to do so in the coming weeks. You are entering a phase when the best way to thrive is to know in your gut that life is always vaster, wilder, and more mysterious than it appears to be on the surface. If you revere the riddles, the riddles will be your sweet, strong allies.

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
