A SITUATION OF OUR OWN MAKING

I love Paris and am as distressed as anyone over the recent terrorist attacks. But I am tired of the proclamations by western leaders like Obama’s: “This is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share.” Comments like this are intended to portray the West as innocent victims of people determined to destroy honourable values.

In truth, western nations have been the perpetrators of state-sponsored terror that has been destroying country after country and the lives of millions of people. In 1999, I witnessed firsthand the anguish, death and squalor brought on by the 1991 Gulf War and years of crushing sanctions that killed more than 500,000 Iraqi children under the age of five. In my diary I prophetically

wrote: “What kind of future relationship will we have with an entire generation of Iraqis who have suffered such brutality at our hand? Iraq is not a nation of terrorists but through our actions, we have planted the seeds of extremism and hatred that could make it such in the future.Terrorism is not about unfounded hatred of freedom and democracy or religious extremism, it is about repres-

sion and exploitation of the powerless by the powerful. It is about pain and anguish on a scale rarely, if ever, seen by most of us.” France has already responded to last Friday’s terror attacks with a retaliatory reign of terror that will only result in a further escalation of the violence. It is time for western leaders to admit that their policies are bankrupt and have been for decades. You cannot brutalize people and then expect them to engage with you as global partners. I am no fan of Putin, but a recent comment to the US aptly summed it up: “How can you even now fail to understand what a mess you have made? –Jillian Skeet

Inquest examines why woman died after VPD arrest

MIKE HOWELL @howellings

Crews groom runs on Cypress Mountain this week.

Snow gods smile on local mountains ROBERT MANGELSDORF @robmangelsdorf

Glory be to the snow gods; the mountains are open. After a dismal ski season last year that saw the local mountains end their season early, all three local ski hills opened for the winter last weekend, weeks ahead of schedule thanks to cool temperatures and fresh snow. Cypress Mountain opened Friday (Nov. 20) with more snow at its base than at any point last season. Close to half a metre of fresh powder fell last week, with cold temperatures allowing the local hill to run its snowmakers around the clock. At Grouse Mountain, the Paradise Bowl and Greenway Chairlift both opened Friday afternoon, as did Grouse’s new Snowshoe Grind trail. The 4.3-km trail has an elevation gain of more than 200 metres and is being

billed as the winter version of the popular Grouse Grind hiking trail. Over at Mount Seymour, the ski runs are still a few days away from opening, but the toboggan hill is fully operational. While Seymour doesn’t have snowmaking capabilities, the forecast looks good and the runs should be open any day now. “Temperatures are nice and cold and we have some snow in the forecast for [this] week,” said Simon Whitehead, Mount Seymour’s marketing manager. “We’re pretty excited. Last year was pretty disappointing, so this is great to see.” Whistler Blackcomb kicked off its 50th anniversary season one week ahead of schedule, as it opened to the public last Thursday (Nov. 19). Blackcomb Mountain and the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola will open as scheduled on Nov. 26. W

When Cheryl Ann Cowan was arrested in the early morning of Dec. 15, 2014, she was loaded into a Vancouver police prisoner wagon and transported to jail. The trip from the scene of her arrest at a house near 33rd Avenue to the jail on East Cordova took almost 24 minutes. At some point during that trip, Cowan went unconscious. Eight days later, the 58-year-old woman died in St. Paul’s Hospital. The BC Coroners Service announced in a news release this week that an inquest will be held in January to “determine the facts surrounding this death.”The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances. The inquest is being called despite a separate investigation into Cowan’s death by the Independent Investigations Office, which investigates police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death to a person. The investigations’ office cleared the Vancouver police of any wrongdoing in Cowan’s death. The Coroners Service said in an emailed statement the

Cheryl Ann Cowan, 58, went unconscious in a police wagon after she was arrested Dec. 15, 2014. She died in hospital eight days later. Dan Toulgoet photo decision to hold an inquest was made after the chief coroner reviewed the circumstances of Cowan’s death. “The Coroners Act makes it mandatory for all deaths in police custody to be reviewed at inquest,” the statement said. “By long practice, the Coroners Service takes all policeinvolved deaths to inquest to ensure a thorough public review of the circumstances.” Richard Rosenthal, the chief civilian director of the investigations’ office, noted in his report that medical records determined Cowan’s cause of death was “severe anoxic brain injury due to a cardiac arrest.” The injury occurs when the heart stops, causing a lack of

oxygen to the brain. Police arrested Cowan after responding to a 911 call at 6:08am on Dec. 15, 2014 of a woman “causing a disturbance” at a family member’s house. Evidence from medical records and witnesses who interacted with Cowan concluded she was intoxicated. “The statements of both witness officers are clear that neither officer perceived any medical distress being experienced by the affected person,” Rosenthal said. The officer who drove the prisoner wagon declined to make a statement in the investigation, which is his right under the Charter. Even so, Rosenthal said he was satisfied

the officer performed his duties according to policies set out by the VPD related to the transportation of prisoners. Rosenthal concluded there was no evidence that any force was used in the arrest and that Cowan was able to get into the prisoner wagon unassisted. VPD policy states that officers are required to check on the well-being of a person in custody, particularly when there is a considerable delay in transportation or the prisoner was injured or suffered from a medical condition. “In this case, the delay was not of a length that could in any way be classified as considerable,” said Rosenthal, noting the trip took 23 minutes and 18 seconds, including a brief stop at the VPD’s Cambie Street precinct. Police didn’t know Cowan was unconscious until an officer opened a door of the prisoner wagon at the jail at 7:43am Nurses, jail staff, a doctor and firefighters all responded to Cowan, who regained a pulse after treatment from paramedics. She was transported to St. Paul’s Hospital in an ambulance, where she remained on life support until her death Dec. 23, 2014.The inquest begins Jan. 11, 2016. –Courtesy ofVancouver Courier

Mudhoney mayhem: 25 years later Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

Where were you 25 years ago? Thanks to consistent reminders from my longtime pal, interviewer extraordinaire, and media impresario Nardwuar the Human Serviette, I happen to know exactly where I was in November 1990. My ramshackle garage band, the Smugglers, had landed the gig of our young lives, at an all-ages concert at UBC’s Student Union Ballroom. It was called “Whoa Dad!” and starred none other than Mudhoney, Seattle’s undisputed kings of grunge. Also on the bill was Nardwuar’s band, the Evaporators (who are still rocking, celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2016), and legendary Olympia indie band Beat Happening. It certainly helped our cause that Nardwuar was both our friend and the promoter of the concert. Nardwuar had already organized several other smaller all-ages concerts around town, but he really hit the needle in the groove for “Whoa Dad!” Mudhoney

was arguably at the apex of their career in November 1990, months after their hallmark debut self-titled album, and less than a year before the music world would be changed forever by fellow Emerald City rockers Nirvana. All 1,000 $6-tickets sold out in advance, with heavy demand for more, so Nardwuar organized a security force of geek-rock volunteers from UBC’s CiTR Radio, who in retrospect could have passed for the cast of Ghost World. When the frothing hordes of first generation flannel-and-combat bootsclad grunge rockers arrived by city busload after busload, they easily shoved the twee security aside, over-stuffing the SUB Ballroom with raging teenage testosterone. The Smugglers played first, taking to the stage in our matching outfits of dark navy pea jackets and rubber boots, with as much false confidence as we could muster, playing as loudly and as quickly as we could, with as much airborne energy we could possibly manage. From the very first note the crowd was miraculously with us, exploding into a frothing

Twenty-five years ago, Vancouver music history was made, in rather revolting fashion. pit of bodies like an ocean riptide. When we gathered backstage after the set in sweat soaked puddles, we felt like rock stars. Caroline Longford, the reviewer from Discorder magazine assigned to cover the gig, didn’t agree, not even bothering to mention our performance in her

print review: “of the three acts worthy of mention, the talented Evaporators were, as usual, the most amusing. Beat Happening, contrary to what the names suggests, definitely wasn’t… [and] last but not least, Mudhoney. They were good.” Not even worthy of mention? Ouch. What sadly is worthy of

mention is my most haunting memory of “Whoa Dad!”: the moment immediately before Mudhoney took to the stage. Acting as MC, Nardwuar was attempting to introduce the band in a trivia-laced, lengthy and earnest intro, but was being drowned out by the booing crowd. Finally realizing the battle between audience

and MC was lost, Nardwuar pulled a double reverse, shouting four words into the mic that I’ll never forget: “SPIT ON ME NOW!” The surly audience didn’t hesitate. A sickening hailstorm of spit and phlegm rained down on our dear friend and promoter, who stood at the lip of the stage in a crucifix pose, his head craned back, his eyes shut tight and mouth agape. The stage lights grossly illuminated the bodily fluids arcing from the sinus cavities of the thousand-plus angry punks to Nardwuar. I was used to Nardwuar’s sudden bursts of reverse psychology, but had never seen it backfire to this disgusting magnitude. When the gobs finally subsided, a seemingly nonplussed and thoroughly soggy Nardwuar lifted the mic to his mouth and shrieked “ladies and gentlemen, please welcome… from Seattle, Washington, USA… MUDHONEY!” Mudhoney fittingly launched into “Here Comes Sickness”, and the SUB Ballroom detonated into pure grunge rock mayhem. So… where were you 25 years ago? W

Vancouver’s gourmet underground Down alleys and behind nondescript doors lie some of our city’s tiniest bars and restaurants, just waiting to be discovered. But what they lack in size they make up for in charm and flavour. ROBERT MANGELSDORF @robmangelsdorf

lounge in the alley out back. & ,8##1<01>4".)217

Sometimes you just want a drink. Sometimes you don’t want to deal with line-ups, or cover charge, or bouncers or obnoxiously loud EDM. You just want a good drink and good conversation. How it should be. But what the club and pub scene may lack is more than made up for by the many tiny bars offering solace from the hustle and bustle of this city of ours. Tiny, hard-to-find bars are common the world over, of course. In NewYork City, the craft cocktail-focussed “speakeasy” scene has thrived over the past decade, giving rise to dozens of tiny “secret” bars open only to those in the know. The shanty-style bars of Shinjuku Goldean Gai in Tokyo seat a half dozen people at a time, and if you want a seat, be prepared to rent it for the night. In Sydney, meanwhile, it’s not uncommon to have to walk through a late-night laundromat, hair salon, or music store, only to find a bustling bar behind a closet door. So saddle up, here’s Vancouver’s best tiny bars. And don’t make me regret sharing this list.

BLACK LODGE

NARROW LOUNGE

The Narrow has everything you want in an underground bar. There’s no signage, just an unmarked steel door with a red-light next to it around the corner from Main and Third. If the light is on, the bar is open for business. Down the graffitiplastered stairwell, around the corner, and you’ll find yourself in a dimly-lit bar with a couple dozen seats at most. It’s sexy and mysterious, and the bar staff know how to make a damn fine whisky sour. Bonus: In the summer, the Narrow opens up the world’s smallest tiki

For anyone familiar with David Lynch’s groundbreaking TV series Twin Peaks, a visit to the Black Lodge is a must. This teensy-tiny bar at Kingsway and Carolina is decked head-to-toe in a rustic Twin Peaks theme, right down to the framed picture of Laura Palmer behind the bar and the red velvet-curtained washroom with the zig zag paint job. The menu features a wide selection of vegetarian hot dogs and sandwiches, and the portions are insane. And if you spot a backwards-talking midget, you may have had one too many Damn Fine Cherry Pie cocktails. & (82.511=)217';A.-:82=01/".684

THE KEEFER BAR

The Keefer’s inclusion on this list should come as no surprise. Under owner and bartender extraordinaire Dani Tatarin, the Keefer has become Vancouver’s premiere cocktail bar. In a nod to its Chinatown locale, the interior is decorated to look like a Chinese apothecary, and many of the cocktails feature tinctures made from traditional Chinese herbs and medicine (seahorse, anyone?). Despite its minuscule size, it still manages to host burlesque shows on Thursday nights. Just make sure you get there early if you want a seat. Actually, that’s good advice for all of the bars on this list. & ;A.3..$.#-8#)217

CAMPAGNOLO UPSTAIRS

It’s easy to miss this nondescript bar. Located directly above its big sister Campagnolo, the entrance is noted only by a lowercase “c” on a door opening onto

Main Street. Up the stairs (naturally), and you’l find an intimate (if sparsleydecorated) room, adorned with the remnants of chef/ owner Robert Belcham’s former restaurants (notably, the neon sign from Fat Dragon). The Dirty Burger is legendary, and the rotating list of nibbles from Belcham’s kitchen always has something to catch your attention (Rabbit liver parfait? Yes please!). Of course, no visit is complete without a lengthy trip down their impressive cocktail list, lovingly assembled by bar manager Peter Van de Reep and his crew. & (82.511=)217'+87%9%!@8?#!

PRONTINO

There’s something I love about a single-staffed bar: it’s intimate, as though you’re a guest in their home. This adorable bar in Cambie Village is small enough that at times, the bartender is the only one working the floor. An offshoot of the much larger Pronto restaurant next door, Prontino is the perfect place to grab a drink pre- or post-movie at the Park Theatre across the street. The interior is clad in wood paneling (not the ugly basement rec room kind, the classy stuff like at Les Faux Bourgeois and the Charlatan), giving it a warm and inviting feel. The drinks list is heavy on Italian classics, offering vermouth flights and a wide assortment of Italian wines. The G&T list is one of the most impressive in the city, too! & *#14@1+8$$.)28'*#14@?41

Tiny spaces with big flavours Anya Levykh Nosh

@FoodgirlFriday Big and bold, large and lavish; these types of restaurants spring easily to mind when thinking of places to celebrate the season. But, what about for a more intimate experience? Here are six tiny spaces that are creating some of the biggest and boldest flavours around.

BISTRO WAGON ROUGE

Not as new as some of the other tiny spaces listed here, Bistro Wagon Rouge in Strathcona serves up punchy French bistro fare with innovative twists, all made with local, sustainable ingredients. Crispy pork belly is paired with applefennel salad and blood orange slices. Beef cheek bourguignon is served with pillowy gnocchi and barbecued green onions. It’s a seasonally rotating menu, so expect lots of new items every month or so, along with a daily fresh sheet. Pretty much everything is under $20, so it leaves your wallet room to splurge on the fantastic bythe-glass list. $ +>!?#027"03<0=",'106

Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar’s executive chef Alex Chen has won the top spot at the 10th annual Gold Medal Plates Competition in Victoria, for his pairing of local pork terrine with Foxtrot Vineyard’s Pinot Noir. Chen will go on to represent BC at the Canadian Culinary Championships in Kelowna, Feb. 5-6, 2016.

In other news from Boulevard, chef Roger Ma has been crowned Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion for his lobster miso chowder with sidestripe shrimp, clams, wakame seaweed and miso flakes. People’s choice winner was chef Alessandro Vianello of ARC at the Fairmont Waterfront for his cedar-smoked sablefish chowder with kelp powder and crispy pancetta, served in a bread bowl. Each day the restaurant opens at 11:30am and closes when they run out of the daily handmade noodles. An’s mother also comes in daily to make the scallion pancakes, which are light, crispy and delicious. Pair it with some of the tasty sides, like century egg or braised beef tripe salad, and a large bowl of noodles, like the koh soi, for a hearty lunch or dinner. ! &7?-70*00.8,!'106

LATAB

Kris Barnholden (formerly of Mis Trucos) has taken over the tiny space on the west side of the Wall Centre downtown and turned it into a temple of culinary coolness. This little wine bar seats no more than about 20, but it’s warm and friendly, with a funky Nordic vibe, and a killer cocktail and wine list (all available by the glass) thanks to GM Eryn Dorman. Barnholden’s food is fun and innovative, like the Humboldt squid with caramelized yeast and crabapple leather over a buttermilk-infused sauerkraut. Everything is made in-house, from the bread to the preserves and butter (Barnholden evens mills the grains for his flour). Prices are equally tiny. Most items on the menu run $7-$12, with a couple around the $15 mark. Don’t miss the

duck cotechino with clams and the stellar desserts. $ /7?74'17

DOCK LUNCH

Owner Elizabeth Bryan has what can be assumed to be one of the city’s smallest restaurants. At only 16 seats, Dock Lunch is hidden away in Mount Pleasant on East 11th Avenue. It looks like a favourite aunt’s living room (which, in a sense, it is, as the furnishings were Bryan’s for over a decade). Hours and menu are equally tiny. Dock Lunch is open for lunch Monday to Friday, and brunch on the weekend, as well as one dinner every Friday. The food can best be described as “global comfort” and it’s very comforting, with dishes like meatballs subs or banh mi for lunch and West African beef stew for dinner. It changes every day, and there are no substitutions, but Bryan has built up a well-deserved and devoted following. $ &71,400:'106%(01:/=31@

MASAYOSHI

Japanese holes-in-the-wall are in no short supply in Vancouver, but places that offer a slightly more elevated experience are less com-

mon. Chef Masayoshi Baba (formerly of Tojo’s) serves up excellent sushi and contemporary Japanese fare with elegant touches and a bit of molecular gastronomy in his eponymous restaurant. The house dashi (made at your table in a coffee syphon) is one of the best I’ve tried in the city, and, while the prices might feel a bit steep compared to your typical sushi joint, it’s the flavours that are the big stars here. ! &71,400:'106%-7!750!@>;=!@>

THE SARDINE CAN

Situated in the heart of Gastown,The Sardine Can delivers bold Spanish flavours in small portions in a tinier space. Part of Andrey Durbach and Chris Stewart’s collection of casual eateries, it also boasts a fantastic Spanish beer, sherry and brandy list. The menu is ever-evolving, but classics like sardines on toast, chorizo cooked in sherry, octopus-potato-chorizo casserole and other Iberian delights are in for the long haul. Dishes like lamb with preserved lemon and apricots veer toward Spain’s Moorish roots, and pair perfectly with a sherry flight or three. Open nightly until the food runs out. ! 9@,;7#.>3,)73'17

In other Fraserhood news, Graze, the popular vegan eatery, has closed its doors. Don’t be sad, though, as the move is temporary until larger commercial digs can be found that will accommodate the restaurant’s growing retail line of nut-based cheese products. Shark Club is reopening Dec. 1 after 18 months of renovations. The new space also features a completely new menu from Chef Brandon Thordarson, as well as a custom cocktail list from created by top bartenders, including Grant Sceney, Justin Taylor, Gez McAlpine, Shaun Layton, and Joel Virginillo. Boozin’ for Jesus! Stephen Smysnuik The Growler @TheGrowlerBC

If you – like me – are sane, reasonable and a little cheap, you’ll probably see the Advent calendars produced by Phillips Brewing and by Parallel 49 / Central City this year at the liquor store and balk at the

$60-plus price tag. “$60 for a two-four?” you’ll scoff. “Fetch me that case of Kokanee!” But then you’ll reconsider as you walk toward the register, because you – like me – have warm and fuzzy memories of Advent calendars from your youth. Sure, those calendars cost $2.99 at the IGA and featured the same wax-flavoured chocolate square for 24 days

straight, but there’s something thrilling about peeling back some perforated cardboard to score an unhealthy treat. Which means you’re probably intrigued by the beer Advent calendar, but demand to know why they cost so much. This case of Kokanee you’re carrying costs half as much. Also, your infant daughter needs new socks this winter. As exciting as Advent cal-

Rated “Best Value” in Wine Spectator 2015, this is a racy, vibrant style perfect in keeping with West Coast cuisine. This Sauvignon Blanc from Chile’s Casablanca Valley offers up fresh, lively fruit flavors with balanced acidity. There are aromas of fresh herbs and citrus notes all coming together in a smooth, crisp sip with a long juicy finish.

A beautiful Pinot Noir from Tasmania’s Tamar Valley. This cool climate Pinot displays juicy black cherry fruit with a hint of raspberries. Its soft ripe tannins and fresh acidity make this a perfect pairing with duck or a roast chicken.

where every single beer is packed by hand to fill each one of the 13,000 Craft Crossing cases on order. Automating the process is far too difficult and expensive, so it has to be done by hand to ensure every beer is placed in the correct spot. But at least P49 and Central City have the luxury of a thirdparty packaging facility. The Phillips team packages everything one of their Snowcases in house. For the past three years, all Phillips staff members devote one full week to packing the Snowcase. “It’s a labour of love,” says Matt Lockhart, Phillips’ marketing manager. “Everybody in the company is involved in putting this thing together. We’re really proud of it at the end of the day because we all do actually touch it.” He says they start planning the Snowcase in February, with new recipe development happening earlier in the year so they can schedule and allocate tank space. “There’s a lot of strategy that goes in to when we’re brewing, and also where it’s placed in the Snowcase itself,” he says. “I don’t want to give too much away, but there is a little bit of a method in terms of

where things are stacked, and what tastes better fresh.” He wasn’t sure how many new beers are in this year’s Snowcase, but he said there’s a good mix of new and old, including some eight-year-old recipes that have been revived specifically for the Snowcase. The complicated planning process seems worth it at the end of the year. Both the Phillips and the P49/CC Advent calendar sold out last year, and they’ll likely sell out this year. The Snowcase is so popular, Phillips has created an online tasting party where people can comment on the beer of the day.The urge to relive childhood warm-and-fuzzies is strong in the craft beer community. So put down the Kokanee, friend, and knit your infant some socks this year. Do it while sipping whatever’s coming out of that Advent calendar. You have 24 days to learn, after all. W

endars can be, is the $60-plus price tag really worth it? I’m telling you the answer is yes. Here’s why: A. Both the Phillips Snowcase and the P49-Central City Craft Crossing Calendar include 24 different beers to be drunk over 24 days. B. Many of these beers are brand new recipes (half, in the case of the Craft Crossing calendar). C. Many of these beers are big and boozy. D. Producing these Advent calendars is a Herculean effort for each of the breweries concerned. For Central City and P49, planning the second annual Craft Crossing Calendar began at the beginning of the year. It’s a collaboration right down the line – from the beer, to the marketing, to the packaging. “Logistically, these are really tough,” says Gary Lohin, head brewer at Central City. “You’re making your big beers three or four months ahead of time.We just leave them in a tank and let them mature, then wait until the last moment to package them, because of the implications of the packing. It’s fresher if it’s left right until the last moment.” This means that they need to allocate tank space throughout the year. Once the beer’s made, the two breweries need to coordinate sending palates upon palates of beer to a packaging facility in Chilliwack,

WINE

Micro-wines: Does size matter? Michaela Morris By the Bottle @MichaelaWine

Well, yes and no. I would never say that bigger is better or smaller is more beautiful. Both large- and small-scale wines have their merits. Just for starters, wineries with greater scales of economy often have the ability to offer wines at a more attractive (aka less expensive) price point. But there is something to be said about wines produced on a more limited scale. Though not necessarily a given, a single vineyard wine, for example, has the potential to demonstrate the distinctiveness of a very specific place. Others may be a unique expression of something experimental. Following are a handful of ‘small batch’ wines from some great producers both large and small. 2013 De Martino, Viejas Tina/XM DJM>XL " GLXLX 'X--:*I $31-: " %=ZI PN1HXL: ,1R: MLQN:M De Martino isn’t ‘micro’ but many of their wines are produced in limited quantities. The Muscat is aged in 100-year-old clay amphorae and left in contact with the skins for six months, harkening back to winemaking techniques of the past. Intense aromas of orange marmalade and lovely white flowers give way to flavours of honey, citrus peel, apricot and ginger. Marquis Wine Cellars has about 80 bottles, so pick one up while you can. UZWU $XS:NQR TJ53:MI EQL ;24 Y1:-< &-:R< " EQ<1I $X-18QNR1X " %W4K40I &$ E1OJQN )LQN:M Cameron Hughes makes a lot of different wines, but each in small quantities. His business model is very savvy. He seeks out fruit from top-notch vineyards willing to sell grapes at a good price and makes one-off cuvées. The only stipulation is that he doesn’t reveal the exact source. Here Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Tempranillo come together for a rich, full-bodied, fruit-driven but honest red. Excellent quality and value for money.

Westender.com

UZW= )XR<31--I )SX-- EQLM )*NX3I B3XRLQS $N::. '1R:*XN< " C.XRX5XR 'X--:*I &$I 'A( " %=9I ,1R:N* <1N:>L Sandhill’s small lots program is winemaker Howard Soon’s playground. It allows him to highlight what is special and try out new things. This Syrah is a specific vineyard designate from Phantom Creek in the south Okanagan, yielding just 10 barrels. Expect lush black plum, prune, chocolate and clove along with meaty peppery notes and some toasty oak.

R6H DXN1:@$QJNL1R ?FMQRXR>: !+LNX &NJL " $3XSPX5R: (C$I YNXR>: " %7=I PN1HXL: ,1R: MLQN:M Many of the famous Champagne houses make millions of bottles a year. In order to furnish that production they buy from hundreds of tiny grape growers. Sometimes those growers decide to make their own Champagne rather than sell their grapes. Owning just 2.5 precious hectares, Marie-Courtin’s total production is about 6,000 bottles a year. Miniscule. So savour that steady stream of fine bubbles delivering chalky minerality, smoky flint, quince, luscious nectarine and jasmine. The Résonance is laser-sharp and rivals many similarly priced Champagnes from better-known houses. Kitsilano Wine Cellars stocks a small but continual supply. UZWW YNXL:--1 (-:MMXR<N1X " &XNQ-Q DQRH15-1:NQ #C$VI GLX-* " %4WK00I &$ E1OJQN )LQN:M This small family-run estate owns tiny plots of vineyards scattered around the region of Barolo. They bottle the best separately, crafting three “cru” or single-vineyard cuvées. From the Monvigliero cru, they eke out only 600 cases. We’re lucky to get a few of these in BC. It’s a fairly delicate style of Barolo with absolutely gorgeous scents of rose, aromatic herb and mineral. The palate is firm yet still fine with red fruit, flowers and a hint of peach. Elegant, long and savoury, this has a good 10-15 years ahead of it. Collector alert! W ' /$(.*# *).&0#(,* %- !")*#+

Culture Crawl highlights

Niki Hope Style File

@NikiMHope

CRISTINA BELMONTE @cbelmonte

Last weekend’s Eastside Culture Crawl delighted with a mix of buzzed-about studios and interesting design newcomers. If you missed it, here are some highlights to check out:

ANYUTA GUSAKOVA STUDIO

Trained in European and classical arts, Anyuta’s bold sculptures blur the line between disciplines and possess a touch of Picassian surrealism that result in highly poetic objects. AnyutaStudio.com

LYNN FALCONER

Designed by sculptor Lynn Falconer, these versatile design-art objects are handmade and cast in one pound of solid bronze. Her recent series took shape by observing the poses of local burlesque dancers, and can be used as wall hooks, jewelry holders or decorative pieces. PhysicalAttachments.com

EAST END WOODWORK

Originally from Manitoba, BrettYaris recently took the plunge into his own woodworking business with a covetable collection that launched at this year’s Crawl – well-designed contemporary furniture and housewares at prices that won’t break the bank. EastEndWoodworks.com

BRAD TURNER

Another newcomer to

Anyuta Gusakova Studio the Crawl was BradTurner and his mesmerizingTråden Lights. Just when we thought we couldn’t see another glass lighting design that would surpass the ridiculously amazing Bocci,Turner has to up the ante. Nordic influence with a Canadian twist. GlassTurner.ca

COPILOT STUDIOS

Captivated by its beauty and feel, industrial designer James McDonald embarked on a love affair with rare woods that soon turned to producing exclusive, upmarket eyewear. CopilotStudios.ca

ABUBILLADESIGN

Clotilde Orozco and Alejandro Sanguino are two Spanish architects and designers who like to create with their own hands. Abubilladesign showed for the first time at the Crawl and their Little Stroller undoubtedly stole the show. Abubilladesign.com

3+*&51$ )'"+0 fashion photographer Bill Cunningham famously summed up fashion as “the armour to survive the reality of everyday life. I don’t think you could do away with it. It would be like doing away with civilization.” Chances are you’ll need to throw on some “armour” to get through western civilization’s inevitable seasonal gatherings. Here are a few protective festive options for your next holiday office party, family dinner, and NYE bash.

COCKTAIL HOUR

Vancouver designer Eliza Faulkner’s Milah dress ($310) available online at ElizaFaulkner.com in this lush pine green and a soft berry red, is a versatile option that can be dressed up for cocktail hour or down for the office. I love how the dress is styled with these darling Nordstrom-brand polka-dot pantyhose, on sale for $10. Grab this Clare V. oversized clutch, available at Gastown’s One of a Few ($320) or go for any black rectangular clutch – they’re everywhere at all sorts of price points. For winter dress-up, I love these classic Vince Camuto suede pumps in black, available at Hudson’s Bay ($175). Opt for a statement ring like Vancouver jewelry designer Leah Alexandra’s Black Onyx adjustable pear ring ($105), available at her online store

From left: Holiday looks for cocktail hour, dressy dinners and NYE. Contributed photos LeahAlexandra.com, and at many local retailers, including The Cross, Nordstrom, Hills of Kerrisdale, Blue Ruby, Beautybar, and LYNNsteven boutique. Finish the look with a simple band, such as the delicate 14K gold Memento bracelet ($395) from local jewelry line Poppy Finch, PoppyFinch.com.

DINNER TIME

Stay comfy in the Talula Winkley blouse ($75) and pair with the Wilfred Free Adrienne vegan leather pant ($145), or the wide-leg, highrise Gerlier pant ($145). For a dressier option. throw on the loose-fitting Minimum Salli dress from The Block in Gastown ($105)

for maximum comfort while indulging). Simple jewelry, like the moonstone and gold collar necklace ($245) from Leah Alexandra, brings some subtle bling. For even more pop, try Leah Alexandra’s Sloane emerald chain studs (statement earrings are here to stay, BTW). Get on point with the pointy-boot toe trend with these Loeffler Randall stunners, available locally at Hudson’s Bay for $475, and throw on an Erin Templeton cross body ($140). The Vancouver handbag line comes in an array of candy-store colours and recycle leathers.

NEW YEAR’S EVE

The velvet suit is a style staple this year. There are a

variety of options in a ton of price points. For NYE, step into a sophisticated tuxedoinspired two-piece like the Radnor blazer in peacot blue from Aritzia ($185) and the tailored Eaton pant ($90). Pair with your favourite crisp white blouse, or, if you dare, go bare underneath with a simple gold chain. Pop on a delicate earring, such as the Leah Alexandra Astro CZ rosegold ear climbers ($95) and scoop up a bold gold clutch – the J. Crew envelope in cracked gold foil ($128) is a lovely option. Finish off the celebratory look with gold pumps, like the nicely priced (on sale) Sam Edelman Orella ($96) available at Nordstrom, and you’re ready to ring in another year of civilization. W

My Digs: Design guru Gillian Segal Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK

As a designer, one of my most favourite opportunities is to sneak a peek into the homes of my peers; I love exploring how fellow creative minds interpret style – the colours, the textures and the trends. Vancouver boasts a strong community of interior designers and this week we are touring the glamourous space of one of our local industry leaders, Gillian Segal of Gillian Segal Design. You may have seen Gillian stealing the show at this year’s IDSWest Open Studio, or caught her work on MarthaStewart.com (for which she is an interior design contributor). Her eclectic-meets-chic South Granville abode is definitely covet-worthy.

What is it? We live in a groundlevel condo in the South Granville neighbourhood. While I think ground-levels have some negative connotations, we couldn’t be happier with our set up. We have about 1,100 square feet over a single floor with a private patio that’s about 500 square feet. Our view overlooks the buildings’ common gardens, which are never in use so we often feel like we have our own back yard. Occupants: My husband, our little Pomeranian, Bear, and myself. I run a boutique interior design firm here in Vancouver and Adam is the CMO of a furniture company specializing in juvenile furniture; Bear is a part time sock-eater and napper. Major selling features: For us it was all about the efficient floor plan (two bed, two bath, plus living and dining rooms). The high ceilings (10-feet through-

8 W November 26 - December 2, 2015

out the unit) and outdoor spaces make the condo feel even larger than it is.

First thing I changed: Being a designer, I had a long list of things to change! We put in new broadloom carpet in the bedrooms, installed black-out drapes and put in a walk-in closet. We painted/wallpapered and changed out all of the light fixtures. I think the smallest, and possibly most effective thing we did was to rip off the doors to the solarium (which is located off the kitchen) and turn the space into an enclosed dining room. It’s great for dinner parties, and freed up the rest of our living space for a luxurious living room. Feature I brag about: My favourite feature is more abstract – it’s definitely the feeling of coziness our place has. I love to entertain and I know our guests always feel comfortable and at ease here (as do we).

That one conversation piece: I have a lot of skulls (prints, accessories) sprinkled around the apartment. I can’t explain why I love them, but I do! The other conversation starter is our pink Dana Claxton photograph of Tonto, which reads, “You speak much but say nothing”.While I tried to maintain more masculine/gender neutral décor for my husband, we both seem to have a weakness for colourful art. The décor: I would say this is my signature style, which I call “modern eclectic glamour”. A mouthful I know, but for me it’s all about creating unique spaces that represent the client (us, in this case). I love mixing the old with the new in unexpected ways. The story behind the art/ antiques/collectibles: The mirror above the fireplace is an antique mirror my mom found about 20 years ago in a house that was slated for demolition.

The South Granville home of interior designer Gillian Segal. Tracey Ayton photo Our dining chairs are also antiques from my parents, so they have sentimental value for me and I loved how they paired with our Tulip table. In terms of collectibles, we love buying art and I also collect teacups (I have a Hermes tea service set and a huge array of mix-matched vintage tea cups). Downsides: That it’s too small for us to stay in forever! I also wish I could have put

my own spin on our kitchen and bathrooms, but they were brand new when we bought so it didn’t make sense. I would love to find a fixer-upper or build for our next home. Neighbourhood haunts: I love the bar at West (their cocktails are the best in town in my opinion). I also love going to Stable House Bistro for an after work drink and charcuterie plate. W

Some people are simply impossible to shop for—what on earth do you get them THIS year?! We’d like to suggest NOTHING! That’s right; give them as much nothing as possible. It’s actually really good for them and they’ll probably thank you for it. This ‘nothing’ we are referring to is of course Floating or Flotation Therapy. Floating has taken Vancouver, Canada, and North America by storm these past couple of years and Float House is one of the originators! If you’re still baffled and wondering “what the “?!?”, floating is a practice where one lies in a small private pool of water about 10” deep. It has 900lbs of Epsom salts dissolved into it, so you float like a cork—guaranteed. The water is also heated to remain the same temperature as the surface of your skin, and

once you get settled it is tough to tell where your body ends and the water begins. It is a spaciously enclosed pool making it lightproof, and your ears are under the surface of the water with ear plugs so you cannot hear anything except your breath and heartbeat. It’s like returning to the womb but this time you’re old enough to enjoy it! It is an amazing space to completely shut off. Even gravity doesn’t stand a chance in there. And consequently your body and mind have a profoundly relaxing reaction to this environment. Sessions are 90-minutes, but you can get out whenever you want, you’re always in control. So this year confidently give them NOTHING (gift cards available instore or online).

Personable, organized and knowledgeable, he made the selling process as easy as possible. The best thing about him was his accessiblity. Every email, text or phone call to him was answered within hours, if not minutes. He gave me immediate updates as needed (good and bad), which I really appreciated, as well as many helpful suggestions and reminders. His dedication is impressive.

I highly recommend Blair as a very professional and conscientious agent.

West End Guest House co-owners David Birch (on left) and Paul Wylie. Dan Toulgoet photos

West End B&B gets modern update to maintain vintage feel KRISTYN ANTHONY @allovthethings

Great Places in Canada recently named the West End the country’s greatest neighbourhood, but that comes as no surprise to David Birch and Paul Wylie. Partners in life and in business, the pair – already residents of the unique Vancouver hood – saw an opportunity to mix business and pleasure when the iconic West End Guest House went on the market. Purchased just over a year ago, Birch and Wylie became just the third owners of the bed and breakfast in the Vancouver heritage home nestled on Haro, between Broughton and Jervis streets. Standing at the front gate, flanked by luscious greenery and a warm glow emanating from behind picture windows, it’s no wonder Birch says they’ve been booked solid since April. Closed for only a month when they took possession, a major cosmetic renovation not only brought back the Victorian aesthetic of the 109-year-old house, but allowed Birch and Wylie to imprint their more modern tastes on the décor.

“We wanted something that reflected our style,” Birch explains, seated on some of the original furniture in the parlour. “All of the art is from local artists, and the Mozart piece in the dining room was a commission from a painter we bought a small piece from on the corner of the street.” Photos documenting the growth of the West End over the last century line the front hall. An homage to the original owners, the Edwards family of Scotland, the photos were taken by their son, a photographer. Seven guest rooms, each unique in their furnishings

and all with private en suites, offer modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi.The sunroom, veranda and private garden feel more like an enchanted secret forest than this prime location in a bustling neighbourhood, home to thousands. Wylie wakes to prepare a breakfast of freshly baked goods each morning and says it’s his way of meeting and connecting with the guests. “Many are return visitors, and have commented on how bright and open it feels now,” he says. “The mix of antique and modern has made for a diversity in travellers.” W

The promise of a few beers and some hang time with your best friends is what helped steer Vancouver quartet Dead Ghosts towards putting together their third, and arguably best LP, Love and Death and All the Rest. The peace of mind obtained by renting out a remote barn in Ladner, which allowed the garage rock mainstays to self-record the set in relative isolation, likewise added to the experience. That said, Dead Ghosts are pretty up

Paper Maiché Dream Balloon (ATO Records) What’s most interesting about the apparent psych revival we find ourselves in, is just how many different types of psych music there are. “Psych” is a broad term to be sure, with little stringing the genre together other than an apparent love affair with reverb and a penchant for trippy weirdness (even if that only applies to a band’s aesthetics). It should come as no surprise – given their ridiculous name – that Melbourne, Australia’s King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard fall decidedly onto the “psych” spectrum. But while con-

temporary psych bands like Temples or Dungen deal largely in nostalgia, King Gizzard embodies the spirit of the genre as they experiment with pop music forms resulting in a sound that is utterly unique. Weird is indeed wonderful. The band’s absolutely bonkers instrumentation – which includes two drummers, flutes, harmonicas, sitars, bongos and Lord knows what else – brings to mind fellow Melburnians (and similarly absurdly-

talk that the converted space also houses swooping owls and a questionable fellow in an adjoining shack colourfully likened to a “weird hick serial killer from True Detective” – there’s plenty of good spirits surging through Dead Ghosts’ latest. Hopped-and-bopped numbers like “Rat Race” and “Waste My Time” are tangled up in reverb, oldies rock melodies and slopped-butsublime rhythms, assuring the unit’s rightful place on playlists alongside the likes of the Everly Brothers, any of the offthe-radar obscurities found on the Back From the Grave series, or the modern day raucousness of the Black Lips. While Dead Ghosts – which also includes drummer Michael Wilkinson and bassist Maurizio “Moe” Chiumento – have spooked named) Architecture in Helsinki. King Gizzard’s seventh release in three years (!!) begins with the sexy groove of “Sense”, before taking a left turn towards bubblegum pop on “Bone”. “The Bitter Boogie” offers a droning T. Rex-like take on Booker T. and the M.G.s’ classic “Green Onions” riff, while “Cold Cadaver” takes a raga jam about a dead body and turns it sugary sweet. On Paper Maiché Dream Balloon, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have conceived an uncommonly creative and eclectic weirdopop masterpiece that begs to be played start-to-finish, over and over again. Lauren Ray photo up self-recorded offerings in the past, they took their time with Love and Death and All the Rest. Though in the grand scheme of things, the band haven’t made any drastic changes to their vintage sound, the last six months have seen them exploring their sonic options. This includes slathering smooth backup “woohs” on nervous janglers like “It’s Up to You,” to going the mind-bending route with an acid-dappled and backwards-masked guitar solo on “All in a Row.” “When you think about when you record a record, most people will go in for a seven day-straight binge – just get in and get out. We were writing the songs at the same time we were recording them,” guitarist Wilkinson says of the advantage of the relaxed schedule. “It gives

you the freedom to get a little screwy.” Thematically, Nichol notes that the record’s “Drink It Dry” references a warped European trip in which the quartet and Italian garage crew Movie Star Junkies got wild off a round of extreme drinks in Torino. As noted in song, even a sip will make you “lose your mind.” “They took us to this shaman-like guy that made these illegal drinks that made you hallucinate,” he elaborates while flipping through countless blurry iPhone photos of a glowing-eyed barkeep. “We had two of them: one was called Tamango and one was called Mystero. It came in a little dixie cup.” Chiumento likened the experience to drinking paint thinner and getting a giggleless high, while Nichol con-

LOW LEVELS

Low Levels (independent) With the days getting shorter and the nights getting longer, we Vancouverites could use something to get excited about. Sadly, the city’s empty dancefloors bear witness to the fact that many of us would prefer to “Netflix and Chill” than partake in the pure visceral ecstasy of having one’s face melted off. Vancouver’s Low Levels, however, live for that thrill, and on their debut self-titled EP, they share their contagious energy over the course of seven blistering songs. The pedigree of this band is impressive: frontman Al Boyle is a former member of WPP,You Say Party and Hard Feelings; drummer Byron Slack currently shares his talents with Invasives and the Hanson Brothers; bassist

Emily Jayne comes by way of Montreal’s Devil Eyes. Together as Low Levels they have created 20 minutes of hard-hitting post-hardcore that while highly technical, never feels self-indulgent. Boyle’s vocals are contrasted perfectly by Jayne’s as the pair trade-off on screaming duties. Similarly, Jayne’s rock-steady bass lines provide the perfect counterpoint to Boyle’s frenetic guitar work. Holding everything together, meanwhile, are the absolutely savage drums of Mr. Slack,

fessed it made him puke by the time they wandered over to an outdoor rave. “It literally hurt every square inch of your body. I got a song out of it, at least.” While Dead Ghosts have traveled throughout Europe and North America, their current schedule just has them playing Victoria and a record release party at Vancouver’s Cobalt on Nov. 28. Eight years in, though, the act doesn’t so much care where they are, so long as it’s a place where they can jam together. “The day we practice is the day I look forward to the most,” Nichol beams as he looks around a table full of buddies. “I’m going to drink some beers and play music with my friends. That’s so rad! I don’t even give a shit about the weekend.” W who ensures the band starts and stops on a dime, every time. The EP opens with the reflective “Ultramarine”, a defiant confessional over a driving beat that compels you forward with the chant, “I’m searching for what I’m searching for.” On “Vintage”, Low Levels offer a glimpse of what At The Drive-In might have sounded like had they grown up in Washington, DC, instead of El Paso,Texas. The album’s high point, however, is the flawless “Strip Mall”; a minute and 32 seconds of absolute dance-punk perfection that’s so energetic and catchy you won’t be able to help yourself from singing along. Who knows, maybe it’ll even get you out on the dance floor. –Robert Mangelsdorf Rating:

‘FLEE’ draws blood

Electric Company Theatre unites with Studio 58 for grotesque cabaret KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

“Don’t ask me what FLEE is about,” warns JonathonYoung as we walk together down a hallway at Langara College. “I won’t be able to tell you.” “Why?” I ask, playing along. “Because it’s so complicated?” “Because it’s so profoundly simple,” he counters with a mischievous grin. We duck into an empty room within Studio 58, Langara’s professional theatre training program, joined by third-year theatre student Lucy McNulty. We only have 20 minutes beforeYoung has to head into a production meeting for FLEE, the second show of Studio 58’s 50th anniversary season, but there is a lot of ground to cover. For the past few weeks, Young and the Studio 58 crew have been working on this darkly humorous song and dance number, making its world premiere at the Fox

actors who are graduating ready to work. Actors who excel at rehearsing, who come prepared, who bring ideas. And also bring three years of experience at technique and craft,” saysYoung, whose recent credits include TheWaiting Room (Arts Club), Hamlet (Bard on the Beach) and the upcoming Betronffenheit collaboration with acclaimed dance company Kidd Pivot. Young entered theatre school straight out of high school, and while the magnetic performer makes it looks effortless now, he admits the early years were rocky. “I wasn’t really ready to go into post-secondary education,” saysYoung. “So I left for a year after that. And then I came back from travelling and being a bum, and I still wasn’t really ready. But I did a couple more terms and then I repeated a term, and then things started to happen. I started to figure out how to use the school to my advantage – I just clicked into that the whole point was process, not product. And then I just started to use it as a big experiment. “I had basically spent the whole first half thinking, ‘Well, I’ve lost whatever [talent] I had,’” he continues, earnestly.

Cabaret on Nov. 26. Set to original music by Vancouver composer Peggy Lee, the play centres around performing fleas and the awful story of how they came to be. FLEE marks the first time Young, a Jessie Award-winning actor, playwright and Studio 58 alumnus, has taken the reigns as sole director. It’s also the first collaboration between Studio 58 andYoung’s wildly innovative Electric Company Theatre, which he co-founded in 1996 with fellow Studio 58 students Kim Collier, David Hudgins and Kevin Kerr. FLEE was created by Hudgins, who now serves as the associate director of Studio 58, as well asYoung and FLEE lead Peter Anderson, in partnership with Barking Sphinx Performance, the Elbow Theatre and the Arrival Agency. It also stars Studio 58’s artistic director Kathryn Shaw, veteran actors Lois Anderson and David Peterson, a live band, and 10 senior Studio 58 students. As he helps Studio 58 ring in its 50th year,Young has nothing but praise for the program that helped him find his way professionally. “I think [Studio 58] is still where most people look for

Peter Anderson stars as Twill in FLEE. Emily Cooper photo “But I guess that’s the ideal training journey.” Seated next to him, McNulty watches on intently as he speaks, nodding in agreement. The young performer has had the chance to work withYoung twice before, but says this show is giving her unprecedented insight into the creative process through watching Hudgins, Anderson,Young and Shaw. In FLEE, McNulty plays Fleak No. 6, a half-formed performer in the Fleak chorus. The Fleaks have something to say. What a Fleak is, though, remains inscrutable. “We’ve never really answered that question yet,” saysYoung with a laugh. “Are they fleas? I think the answer is no.They’re more like student actors.” “With flea-like qualities!”

McNulty pipes in. Whatever they are, they’re trapped in this flea circus of a story, which sees destitute watchmaker Archibald Twill living in a low-rent hotel on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Madame Renard runs the so-called flophouse while The Old Hand lurks further east with his sideshow. Oh, and in this fictional past, fleas are almost extinct. Fortunes and fates seem to change when Twill comes into the possession of Caprice, the singing flea. Eventually, though, reality bites and FLEE becomes a grotesque tale of exploitation, obsession and self-preservation. Set in a fictional hotel on Powell Street, FLEE never overtly references the issues

of addiction, poverty and homelessness that surround the Downtown Eastside, but Young says the play inherently mirrors some of its rhythms. “I think some of the themes of the show lent themselves to the low-rent flophouses down there that are teeming with life. The point of focus in a lot of those places has a consumptive quality,” says Young. “Even though there’s a lot of life force, it’s staying in the same place, it’s not moving forward, and I think that our show lives in that kind of cyclical predicament.” FLEE also draws heavily on the novels and short stories of Franz Kafka, ranging from The Metamorphosis to A Hunger Artist, to some of his lesser known works. “There’s a short story by Kafka called Josephine the Singer, or the Mouse Folk. I mean, what an awful title,” laughsYoung. “But she’s a singing mouse, and her song, to hear it as a human, is no more than just a plaintiff squeak. But, as Kafka was able to, if you burrow down into the very minutia – the very small and the banal – there’s something very profound going on there.” So there you have it. Profoundly simple, indeed. W ! FLEE (19+) runs Nov. 26Dec. 6 at the Fox (2321 Main). Tickets start at $10; Studio58.ca

Meet the world’s most amazing insurance adjuster Sabrina Furminger Reel People @Sabrinarmf

You’ve seen this movie before: Average Human comes in contact with gamma rays/an extraterrestrial substance/a classified Cold War-era experiment gone awry, and develops superpowers. Average Human – after learning to control his or her new abilities, as well as a brief but dramatic existential crisis – resolves to use this new superpower to fight crime and save humanity, because (cue a string-heavy score), “With great power comes great responsibility.” Roll credits; sell action

REVIEW // THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2

Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson Directed by Francis Lawrence Katniss Everdeen leads her band of not-so-merry rebels toward one last stand against the evil President Snow in the final installment of the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise.Typical for the series, Mockingjay – Part 2 represents some of the best and worst collective moments from the sometimes uneven films. For starters, this concluding chapter features some of the

figures; green-light sequels; print money. It’s a form of superhero story that does ridiculously well at the box office, but it’s also a bit limp. There are only so many ways to tell this story, and we’ve seen and heard it all before.

Which is why Patterson’s Wager – in which Fred Ewanuick (Corner Gas) stars as Charles, an insurance adjuster who can sometimes see two minutes into the future – is so refreshing. Charles’ superpower doesn’t do him (or humanity)

best action with often gripping and genuinely engaging sequences as the heroic invaders get closer to taking down the Capitol while avoiding booby traps that include tidal waves of black oil and fearsome white “lizard mutts.” The problem with these effective scenes is they’re bookended by more of the same dreary talk and heavyhanded exposition that make the screenplay slightly cringe worthy. Structurally speaking, Mockingjay – Part 2, while more engaging than Part 1, suffers as a standalone film because of its reliance on the previous movie. The opening scene picks up literally moments after Part 1 and, while

a case can be made for ‘cutting to the chase,’ it results in a lack of mounting tension, leaving an episodic feel. Thankfully, the Hunger Games films feature excellent casts and the ensemble once again manages to finesse the clunky moments. There is no denying the plot’s admirable overall examination of the oppressed, headstrong masses rising up against a totalitarian government, as timely now as it ever was given the state of world affairs. Unfortunately, as Mockingjay ends, a mawkish final scene threatens to topple everything with the same finality and frustration we’ve come to expect. W +,'83 *&4$8-

setting and just see how people would react.” Adding to that sense of the everyday is the fact that the movie (which filmed over 12 days in the summer of 2013) utilized 19 Metro Vancouver locations. “I wanted it to be set in the places that I see when I drive around Vancouver, be it Spanish Banks at night, or Jolly’s Indian Bistro,” says Saleken. Reel People is a spoiler-free zone, but we’ll cautiously reveal that, at the very moment that Charles realizes he can see two minutes into the future, he’s preparing to propose to his girlfriend, Audrey (portrayed by prolific Vancouver actress Chelah Horsdal, who can currently be seen in Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle). There’s also a parallel story

with a paranormal twist set in 1980s Vancouver, featuring actors Alex Zahara, Garry Chalk, and Michelle Creber. Saleken attributes much of the success of this film – already a favourite on the festival circuit – to casting. “I’m a strong believer that casting is pretty much everything in a film,” says Saleken. “The easiest way for me to cast is try to find an element of the character’s personality in the actor.” With Ewanuick, “[he] has this great, likeable, everyman quality, and he just seemed perfect as a guy who’s befuddled about dealing with this thing that’s going on with him.” W % 5400.318!61(4).3 -&## 2. appearing at the 2015Whistler Film Festival.Tickets atWhistlerFilmFestival.com

Jason R. Goode’s feature film directorial debut. And so it’s fitting that 7/"2 – an adventure-thriller about two couples on the trail of a cache of stolen gold in BC’s interior during the deep-freeze of winter – will close out the 2015 Whistler Film Festival, a fest that promotes itself as “Canada’s

It all seems so random, much like real life, which makes Patterson’sWager – the feature film directorial debut from Vancouver’s O. tent of food. Kimchi can also aid in cleaning up the intestines by helping you rid wastes.

Patty Javier Gomez Whole Nourishment

@WholeNourishBC From the folks that brought us “Gangnam Style” and the World’s Largest Ikea Store also comes a traditional fermented side dish that really packs a spicy punch. It’s called kimchi, and it seems to be one of those things that you either love or hate. Kimchi is to Korea what cheese is to France and what craft beer is to Vancouver, so you can bet that they have several different types and ingredients and variations that haven’t even begun to surface in the West. Korean’s don’t play around when it comes to fermentation. Koreans consume 1.6 million tons of kimchi a year, and like many delicacies around the globe, Korean’s fermentation adventure started as a way to extend storability of foods throughout the winter months. The addition of fish and seafood was introduced to assist the fermentation process and also provide much needed nutrients that otherwise would not have been attainable that

Continued from page 24 Numb filmed on location in Vernon, Enderby, Lumby and Kelowna over 18 days this past February and March. Cast and crew regularly had to snowmobile to set.The average daily temperature was -15 C. Sunlight was often limited to 10 hours per day. “You’re fighting the weather all of the time,” recalls Goode. “Everything is slower.” But in hindsight, the cold, ice, and snow “made everything better,” he says. “As a director, you have to decide what is absolutely essential in that moment, because there was no time to shoot anything that wasn’t essential to the movie.” Stripped of the snow and cold, Numb is a character-driven drama. Fractured people, pushed beyond their limits, face off against each other and their inner demons in a nuanced modern-day gold rush tale. It’s heavy material, and Goode says the actors –Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica), Aleks Paunovic (iZombie), Stefanie von Pfetten (Cracked), and Marie Avgeropoulos (The 100) – were more than up to the task. As the flawed hero, Bamber is “a risk-taking actor, and when I think about Jamie and some of the characters he’s played, I think of a really strong character who has it together or is putting it together,” says Goode. “That was really compelling in Numb because it’s about a character whose life has been deconstructed and his identity

Kimchi tastes amazing and is amazing for you. Kimchi comes in many different varieties and flavours, depending on one’s preference. There’s even such a thing as fruit kimchi, but here in Canada we’re used to it containing various vegetables, including Chinese cabbage, leek, scallions, radish, cucumber, ginseng, garlic, cayenne peppers and Indian mustard leaves.Vegetables are mixed with desired spices and seasonings and fermented for several days. So what benefits do kimchi bring, besides being a party in your mouth?

Beneficial ingredients such as ginger, garlic and pepper are known as natural immune boosters and infection fighters as well as great soldiers in the war against cold and flu.

time of the year, such as calcium and protein. The word kimchi comes from the Korean word shimchae, which translates to “salting of vegetables.” Its origins trace back to the seventh century, where kimchi started just like its name suggests – as salted veggies. But it morphed quickly, with all sorts of spices and flavours being added. It wasn’t until the 18th century that the chili pepper was introduced as an ingredient, which most of us know today as one of the major ingredients. Today kimchi is the most famous fermented foods in Korea, so much so that it is a must-have even for Korean astronauts in space (South Korean scientists spent millions to successfully engineer kimchi fit for space travel).

Because kimchi is a fermented food, it’s packed with tons of beneficial bacteria that aid in your digestive process. Fermentation also enhances the flavour and nutrient con-

as a working man has been taken away from him.” Goode knew that Paunovic was ideal for the character of ex-convict Lee. “Aleks is a jazz musician in total control of his instrument,” says Goode of Paunovic, who he directed several years ago in a stage production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. “He has been one of the untapped gems in theVancouver acting community, but the secret is out.”

Paunovic pointed Goode in von Pfetten’s direction for the character of Dawn. Goode envisioned a character with a warm but aristocratic bearing – which the prolific actress, whose full name happens to be Stefanie Baroness Christina von Pfetten, possesses in spades. As for the final member of the quartet, Goode says he’d been having a hard time casting the role of Lee’s sister – the fiery Cheryl – until The 100

star came along. “The people who read for Cheryl were all fantastic, but they often fell on either the ferocious side or the vulnerable side, and Marie came in, and she was both,” says Goode. Numb was written by Andre Harden and produced by Dylan Jenkinson and RobynWiener (Black Fly). It caps off the 2015 Whistler Film Festival with a red carpet gala on Dec. 6. W ! SEX

You don’t have your ‘man period’ – you’re just pissy Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay According to a new UK study, British men (who are basically Canadian) believe that they experience a monthly man period. The study gathered 2,412 people (split evenly between men and women). The male subjects were asked if they felt that they suffered the same common side effects of premenstrual syndrome that women experience during their menstrual cycle, including “tiredness, cramps and increased sensitivity.” Some men reported bloating, increased appetite, being “sensitive” about weight gain and general irritability. Apparently, the average British man who believes he is having a phantom period spends an extra $81.53 per month on food and snacks. Of the 26 per cent of men who believed that they were having their own masculine menstrual moment, 58 per cent of their female partners actually believed their bullshit. To make life easier, 43 per cent of those believers of their bleeding boyfriends said they walked around on eggshells (39 per cent) and tried to cheer him up (44 per cent), while 33 per cent of women shook their heads and rolled their eyes. Psychotherapist Jed Diamond is one of the few pro-

gressives who believe men do get PMS. In fact, he’s written two books about it: Male Menopause and The Irritable Male Syndrome. “Contrary to what is often assumed, men become violent when their testosterone levels go down and whilst we traditionally associate are with high testosterone,” he told the Telegraph. “I have found that irritability, depression and withdrawal come with a deficiency of the hormone.” Diamond is the only one waving the uterus-with-ascrotum flag, as most scientists do not find this can be true in biological men. Look, British bitch boys, men can’t have PMS because they do not have a menstrual cycle. Biological men do not have a uterus, ovaries or fallopian tubes. These are the three essentials in causing women to menstruate. Inside a biological female’s body, the egg leaves the ovary, travels through the fallopian tube and into the uterus. Hormone levels sky rocket to help prepare the uterine lining for a potential pregnancy. If the egg is fertilized by your sperm (just like we all saw during the intro of Look Who’s Talking) then it clings to the walls of our uterus like a rock climber hanging on for his life. If we block your sperm with an IUD or a condom, then the egg is not fertilized and it breaks apart causing our hormone

levels to drop. Then, Satan reaches into our bodies and rings out the lining of our uterus like a wet rag, creating that week-long blood bath we call a period. You are not having PMS, guy. It’s biologically impossible. Even if Diamond is right and a drop in testosterone can cause mental trauma, then fine, but don’t call it PMS.You are not premenstrual. You never have been and never will be. Why do you even want PMS? It’s not an excuse for whining, self-centered complaining. It’s not some easy out for not attending gym class you can milk. PMS sucks and you know what sucks even more, having to give birth to a human being. I don’t know what annoys me more, that these men are trying to use male PMS as an excuse to waste money on Cheetos or the fact that their girlfriends walk on eggshells to enable this garbage. I imagine Diamond is the kind of guy who would tell me that “science is so conservative”. Please. 1+1=2 (unless you are on acid or are Terrence Howard) and balls + penis = no menstrual cycle. Sorry, boys. W

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny “We are torn between nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange,” wrote novelist Carson McCullers. “As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known.” I’m guessing that these days you’re feeling that kind of homesickness, Aries. The people and places that usually comfort you don’t have their customary power. The experiences you typically seek out to strengthen your stability just aren’t having that effect. The proper response, in my opinion, is to go in quest of exotic and experimental stimuli. In ways you may not yet be able to imagine, they can provide the grounding you need. They will steady your nerves and bolster your courage.

The Pekingese is a breed of dog that has been around for over 2,000 years. In ancient China, it was beloved by Buddhist monks and emperors’ families. Here’s the legend of its origin: A tiny marmoset and huge lion fell in love with each other, but the contrast in their sizes made union impossible. Then the gods intervened, using magic to make them the same size. Out of the creatures’ consummated passion, the first Pekingese was born. I think this myth can serve as inspiration for you, Taurus. Amazingly, you may soon find a way to blend and even synergize two elements that are ostensibly quite different. Who knows? You may even get some divine help.

Author Virginia Woolf wrote this message to a dear ally: “I sincerely hope I’ll never fathom you. You’re mystical, serene, intriguing; you enclose such charm within you. The luster of your presence bewitches me...the whole thing is splendid and voluptuous and absurd.” I hope you will have good reason to whisper sweet things like that in the coming weeks, Gemini. You’re in the Season of Togetherness, which is a favorable time to seek and cultivate interesting kinds of intimacy. If there is no one to whom you can sincerely deliver a memo like Woolf’s, search for such a person.

Some people are so attached to wearing a favorite ring on one of their fingers that they never take it off. They love the beauty and endearment it evokes. In rare cases, years go by and their ring finger grows thicker. Blood flow is constricted. Discomfort sets in. And they can’t remove their precious jewelry with the lubrication provided by a little olive oil or soap and water. They need the assistance of a jeweler who uses a small saw and a protective sheath to cut away the ring. I suspect this may be an apt metaphor for a certain situation in your life, Cancerian. Is it? Do you wonder if you should free yourself from a pretty or sentimental constriction that you have outgrown? If so, get help.

Are you willing to dedicate yourself fully to a game whose rules are constantly mutating? Are you resourceful enough to keep playing at a high level even if some of the other players don’t have as much integrity and commitment as you? Do you have confidence in your ability to detect and adjust to ever-shifting alliances? Will the game still engage your interest if you discover that the rewards are different from what you thought they were? If you can answer yes to these questions, by all means jump all the way into the complicated fun!

I suspect your body has been unusually healthy and vigorous lately. Is that true? If so, figure out why. Have you been taking better care of yourself? Have there been lucky accidents or serendipitous innovations on which you’ve been capitalizing? Make these new trends a permanent part of your routine. Now I’ll make a similar observation about your psychological well-being. It also seems to have been extra strong recently. Why? Has your attitude improved in such a way as to generate more positive emotions? Have there been fluky breakthroughs that unleashed unexpected surges of hope and good cheer? Make these new trends a permanent part of your routine.

From the dawn of civilization until 1995, humans cataloged about 900 comets in our solar system. But since then, we have expanded that tally by over 3,000. Most of the recent discoveries have been made not by professional astronomers, but by laypersons, including two 13-yearolds. They have used the Internet to access images from the SOHO satellite placed in orbit by NASA and the European Space Agency. After analyzing the astrological omens, I expect you Sagittarians to enjoy a similar run of amateur success. So trust your rookie instincts. Feed your innocent curiosity. Ride your raw enthusiasm.

Whether or not you are literally a student enrolled in school, I suspect you will soon be given a final exam. It may not happen in a classroom or require you to write responses to questions. The exam will more likely be administered by life in the course of your daily challenges. The material you’ll be tested on will mostly include the lessons you have been studying since your last birthday. But there will also be at least one section that deals with a subject you’ve been wrestling with since early in your life – and maybe even a riddle from before you were born. Since you have free will, Capricorn, you can refuse to take the exam. But I hope you won’t. The more enthusiastic you are about accepting its challenge, the more likely it is that you’ll do well.

“Most human beings have an almost infinite capacity for taking things for granted,” wrote Leo author Aldous Huxley. That’s the bad news. The good news is that in the coming weeks you are less likely to take things for granted than you have been in a long time. Happily, it’s not because your familiar pleasures and sources of stability are in jeopardy. Rather, it’s because you have become more deeply connected to the core of your life energy. You have a vivid appreciation of what sustains you. Your assignment: Be alert for the eternal as it wells up out of the mundane.

For $70,000 per night, you can rent the entire country of Liechtenstein for your big party. The price includes the right to rename the streets while you’re there. You can also create a temporary currency with a likeness of you on the bills, have a giant rendition of your favorite image carved into the snow on a mountainside, and preside over a festive medieval-style parade. Given your current astrological omens, I suggest you consider the possibility. If that’s too extravagant, I hope you will at least gather your legion of best friends for the Blowout Bash of the Decade. It’s time, in my opinion, to explore the mysteries of vivid and vigorous conviviality.

In their quest to collect nectar, honeybees are attuned to the importance of proper timing. Even if flowering plants are abundant, the quality and quantity of the nectar that’s available vary with the weather, season, and hour of the day. For example, dandelions may offer their peak blessings at 9am, cornflowers in late morning, and clover in mid-afternoon. I urge you to be equally sensitive to the sources where you can obtain nourishment, Virgo. Arrange your schedule so you consistently seek to gather what you need at the right time and place.

Are you available to benefit from a thunderbolt healing? Would you consider wading into a maelstrom if you knew it was a breakthrough in disguise? Do you have enough faith to harvest an epiphany that begins as an uproar? Weirdly lucky phenomena like these are on tap if you have the courage to ask for overdue transformations. Your blind spots and sore places are being targeted by life’s fierce tenderness. All you have to do is say, “Yes, I’m ready.”
