TURNING GREEN

What’s with businesses letting their electric vehicle chargers go dark? Three times last week I pulled up to a known charger only to find it out of order, and a few more earlier this month. Perhaps because there were so many installed around the city at the same time, they’re all reaching their service-by dates, but there are a few business parks who seem to be just leaving them to rot. Aside from the

fact that people rely on those to get from Point A to Point B, they’re also often a reason to support your businesses. It certainly doesn’t breed goodwill to just leave them broken and/or vandalized. And don’t get me started on large businesses that haven’t bothered to put them in for customers at all – here’s looking at you local sports arenas, Costco, and almost anywhere in East Vancouver. –Anonymous

Re:“Rant/Rave”, Oct. 22, 2015. This is in response to Michael Muller’s rant about the Halloween Parade. He’s upset that for a few hours access was halted to the Granville Street Bridge. Lighten up! It was a fun, family celebration! You could still walk across the bridge. Maybe you should get out of your vehicle once in awhile. –K.Kelly

PROUD TO BE CANADIAN

I share Dr. Suzuki’s sentiment: I too feel “proud to be Canadian” after the outcome of the federal election. The last decade has seen Canada stagnate – if not regress – under Conservative rule. In the eyes of the world, we’ve moved backwards on issues like climate change and foreign policy. Our economy is circling the drain, thanks to Harper hitching Canada’s wagon to the filthy, expensive, soon-to-be-obsolete energy sources that are fossil fuels. This year, we saw Canadians come together to say “enough is enough!”We saw Canadians stand up for what they believe in and take to the polls and affect a real positive change. But the Liberals sweeping to power will not automatically fix the many problems Canada is faced with today. We’ve seen in the past the kind of corruption that can take root when a ruling political party becomes arrogant with power. Dr. Suzuki is correct when he states that the hard work is just beginning. Not just for the newly-elected MPs and our new prime minister, but for each and every one of us. Building a Canada we can be proud will require us all to be active members of our communities, to volunteer, to take part, to pitch in, to make sacrifices, to make compromises, and work together. No one is going to give us the Canada we want; we have to make it ourselves. –Raging Libtard

YOUR CITY

Vancouver council votes to demolish viaducts

MIKE HOWELL @howellings

The trick-or-treaters are coming. Are you ready? Thinkstock photo

Halloween blockbuster Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

There they were, right at the stroke of 5pm: a cute little gaggle of goblins and ghosts, the first genuine trick-or-treaters I had seen in decades, right on my front doorstop shrieking “TRICK OR TREAT”, with open bags outstretched. Depending on where you live in Vancouver, All Hallow’s Eve can be a vastly different experience. If you’re a downtown condo dweller, the night of lost souls can be an eternal hellfire of caterwauling partiers in all manner of costume, staggering about on the sidewalks like the drunken living dead. If you live deep within the West End, Halloween can slip quietly past you like Patrick Swayze in Ghost. No one trick-or-treats to apartment buildings. Believe me, I know. I lived in one for about 10 years. It was a graveyard on Halloween. A couple of years ago, my wife and I inadvertently happened to move onto none other than our city’s single busiest street for trick-ortreaters: the tell-tale heart of Trinity Street in East Vancouver. Weeks in advance of Halloween, we couldn’t help but notice our new neighbours going into full on beast mode, transforming their yards and homes into spooktacular sets that could easily give the nearby Playland Fright Nights a run for their candy. Those same neighbours warned us repeatedly about the street’s famed yearly onslaught of lil’ devils, but like the disposable characters of any good horror movie, we mostly ignored the warnings, thinking it was likely over-hyped. We were gravely mistaken. After that first group of cuddly kindred spirits plundered off into the night, a non-stop haunted parade bled into our yard and up

the steps… by the hundreds. Picture a monster mash-up of TheWalking Dead and Muppet Babies. Our candy supply quickly became skeletal, and soon I was dashing through the ghoulish hordes and bursting into the nearby McGill Grocery to re-up. And if you ever want to gauge what’s hot with kids 12 and under, just have hundreds of them show up to your doorstep on Halloween. That first year, American pop star Nicky Minaj was a ridiculously popular get-up for the girls. Subtract and rearrange a few of those letters and you have Ninja, which was on point for the boys. Zombies were the constant gender crossover costume, with various macabre twists. When I asked one kid what his spiked hair, dog collar, and torn up, bloody costume was all about, he replied “Zombie Sid Vicious”. His aging punk rock father stood at the bottom of the steps, smiling proudly. When I questioned another little boy about his costume, which was large, round, and green, he replied “some random Ninja Turtle”. Ok.Wait, hold up... a random Ninja Turtle? There’s only four! Pick one, kid! The best costume that first year had to be the little girl in bug-eye sunglasses and headphones, who walked from door to door with a massive cardboard DJ console strapped to her waist, complete with two turntables and a microphone, blasting out the beats. When the crowds finally died down, I kid you not, we had counted over SEVEN HUNDRED trick-or-treaters to our door. The haunted house on the corner topped out at over nine hundred sugar seekers. This Halloween will be my toddler’s first time trick-ortreating up and down the block of his overly festive neighbourhood. He wants to be some random orca. I can’t wait to hear him shriek “TRICK OR TREAT” with open bag outstretched. W

The Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts are coming down. In a 5-4 vote Tuesday night, the ruling Vision Vancouver council agreed with a staff recommendation to proceed with a $200-million plan to demolish the elevated roadways that have served as a link from Chinatown and Strathcona to downtown since the 1970s. “We’re basically trading an aging piece of infrastructure that’s under-used from a past century – a relic of a failed transportation policy – for an improved road network that can serve a dense new Northeast False Creek neighbourhood and connect the downtown and Chinatown and other neighbourhoods to False Creek,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson after hearing from more than 50 people over two days who largely supported the plan to tear down the viaducts. Robertson credited Vision Coun. Geoff Meggs for leading the charge to remove the viaducts, a move supported by Vision councillors Tim Stevenson, Heather Deal and Raymond Louie. The vote, which occurred without Vision councillors Andrea Reimer and Kerry Jang present, has a place in the city’s history books since it overturns a decision made a century ago to build the original Georgia viaduct in 1915 before it was replaced with the existing structures. “It’s important to keep in mind that the decision we make today could turn the page on a really long chapter in Vancouver’s history and spell the end of the freeway battle that defined the city in the 1970s,” Meggs said. The decision came despite opposition from Green Party Coun. Adriane Carr and the three NPA councillors – Elizabeth Ball, Melissa De Genova and George Affleck, who cited concerns about costs, increased traffic, the delivery of a long-awaited park and unknown benefits to landowners.

The Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts will be replaced by a new road network that will include a two-way Georgia Street that slopes down to Pacific Boulevard. Dan Toulgoet photo “I actually think we’re creating a highway right through the middle of a park, and I think that’s a real problem,” said Affleck, noting he lives in Yaletown with young children. “The kind of traffic that we’re going to be seeing in this neighbourhood on the other side of False Creek is a real concern to me.” Robertson and his Vision councillors pointed to suggestions from speakers and benefits outlined in a city staff report as reasons to free up the large swath of land under the viaducts. Some of the speakers represented the black community and urged council to commemorate the history of Hogan’s Alley while others cautioned politicians not to turn the land into a forest of expensive highrises. There were suggestions that a First Nations longhouse be built and that any future arterial routes constructed to alleviate traffic changes from removal of the viaducts exclude Malkin Avenue so to preserve community gardens that exist on the avenue’s right-of-way. The benefits identified in the staff report include: # -11+"+340$!& 0%+ 16!203/1tion of a long-awaited extension of Creekside Park, now promised to cover 13 acres of vacant asphalt that stretches along the seawall from Science World. # *3+40$!& /5 06 (.. /!$02

Council’s vote was based on a plan recommended by city staff that said the viaducts need up to $65 million in repairs to keep them standing after a moderate earthquake. Traffic counts also showed the viaducts are underutilized – even at “45,000 person trips by vehicle over a 24-hour period” – and used at less than half of their designed capacity. Key to the development of a new neighbourhood will be a road network anchored by a four-lane, two-way section of Georgia Street known as “the Georgia ramp” that will slope down and pass between Rogers Arena and BC Place Stadium, over top of Expo Boulevard, to a six-lane Pacific Boulevard. Jerry Dobrovolny, the city’s head of engineering, said the road network will allow for 10 per cent more capacity for

vehicles but will slow traffic by one to three minutes. Unlike the viaducts, Dobrovolny said, the network will provide a variety of routes into and out of downtown and accommodate future development. Despite fears of residents living in Strathcona and other east side neighbourhoods that traffic will increase on their streets, Dobrovolny said the impact will be “none.” He cited studies that showed a large number of vehicles that use the viaducts originate from the Boundary Road corridor and Tri-Cities. Retired City of Vancouver engineer Ian Adam has long disputed the city’s claims about a replacement road network being more efficient than the viaducts. “Anybody who thinks you can take down two major viaducts like that, which handles 60,000 people a day and a thousand heavy trucks a day – and not have some impact – they’ve got to be dreaming in Technicolor,” he said earlier this year. Adam since wrote a letter to council in advance of Tuesday’s vote, outlining a list of concerns in which he predicted congestion, increases in greenhouse gas emissions, delays with people and goods reaching downtown and Pacific Boulevard turned into “a quasi-freeway.” “The proponents seem to see only the information they want to see, and any mention of negative issues is immediately dismissed,” he wrote. The city anticipates the project will be paid for with development-related revenues, the sale or lease of lands, senior government contributions and “other strategic partnerships.”The city expects it will generate a surplus of $100 million once the project is finalized. The city’s staff report says the entire project, including building a new street network, housing, amenities and developing the park, could take until 2025 to complete. Vancouver’s most longstanding décor boutiques, has had their focus on bringing contemporary, Canadian-made furnishings and accessories to the city for decades. Nestled into the design-savvy district of South Granville, Bayside has curated their collection to offer locally made lines with international appeal. With a high-end urban focus, the family-owned boutique has created a complete offering, from hard furnishings to lighting and accessories, that blends contemporary and comfortable to achieve a stylishly inviting design aesthetic. This week marks the 40th anniversary of Bayside as an integral part of the local design scene in Vancouver; to celebrate this milestone, the boutique is hosting an impressive anniversary sale with an aptly chosen 40 per cent off select merchandise. Bayside hosted an industry night soirée for interior designers and media earlier this week, with the full VIP promotion opening its doors for all customers on Friday. “It is incredibly rewarding to mark our fourth decade as a successful, familyowned and operated business,” said Kevin Halicki, VP of Operations of Bayside Furniture. “Since launching in 1975, we have worked hard to establish our company as a trusted retailer that believes in supporting high-quality Canadian brands. We’re thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our friends, family and loyal clientele.” For those with a love for local and an eye for contemporary style, this is definitely not an event to miss; I’ve pulled some of my favourite Canadian-made pieces from the Bayside collection together to share in preview. As we settle into fall and look to spend more time working and entertaining at home, the ‘gathering’ rooms take precedence – this anniversary event is the perfect opportunity to elevate the comfort and style in these spaces, all while supporting our Canadian design community.

FOR THE DEN

Now that fall is officially upon us, it’s tempting to just to curl up in the living room with a good book. Bayside’s selection of Canadian-made occasional furniture helps create a welcoming space to kick back and relax, without skimping on sleek, contemporary style.

Last-minute freaky finds in Kits The Saturday before Halloween is traditionally the busiest day of the year for Just Imagine in Kitsilano, with eager costume hunters lining up down the block waiting to get ushered inside the busy Broadway store. But this column isn’t for those who have planned ahead and already have their respective costumes, waiting to get worn this weekend – it’s for the rest of us slackers who wait … till the very last minute. Here’s three quick and easy shopping stops with easy costume options (and here’s to hoping there are no scary lineups):

JUST IMAGINE

3060 West Broadway JustImagineCostumes.com A year-round staple with a second location at Granville Island, a warehouse, and a busy online store, Just Imagine is a locally-run Halloween empire. Owner Donna Dobo has seen the rise of Halloween from a kids’-only affair to an event that includes excited adults, outlandish house decorations, and even pet costumes. But one thing that is consistent is that most years there are a handful of pop-culture influenced looks that emerge as favourites. This time around, one of those is the store’s NASA costume (available for all ages in both white and orange), inspired by the hit movie The Martian, with Matt Damon playing an astronaut stuck on Mars. “They are unisex spacesuits, and they are really authentic,” Dobo says, adding that prohibition-era looks – flappers and gangsters – are also popular picks for adults this year. For those who don’t want to change from their everyday clothes, Dobo suggests they try Tinsley Transfers – special effects makeup that can be

threads is that many can be worn on a regular basis – that Freddie Mercury white tank can be a summer staple, the leopard catsuit ($58) can be worn with sneakers and a motorcycle jacket (but only if you are in your 20s, I say, cause otherwise you’re veering into dangerous Peg Bundy territory), the running shorts can, in fact, be used for, well, running, and so on. Plus, the other nice thing about

American Apparel is knowing the clothes weren’t made in an overseas sweatshop.

URBAN OUTFITTERS

2199 West Fourth UrbanOutfitters.ca Finally, for those who want to zip out and grab something quick and weird, stop by Urban Outfitters on Fourth Avenue for a mask, like a toothy open-mouthed T-Rex, a long-tongued German shep-

herd, and a wrinkly pug mask, which range in price from $29.99 to $52. Ideal for the last-minute Halloween partygoer look-

ing to throw on something that will creep the shit out of people with very little effort. Sounds like the perfect costume to me. W

2242 West Fourth AmericanApparel.ca Over at the American Apparel store on West Fourth, the company has done the heavy lifting, by putting together everyday in-store pieces to create striking Halloween looks. American Apparel isn’t a Halloween store per se, but drawing on its ironic millennial wear, the company has devised a ton of options with clothes that can be worn even after the party is over. Costume options include flamboyant Queen singer Freddie Mercury, hair bands of the Sunset Strip, sultry leopard and black catsuits, disco duds, Norwegian black metal looks, and ‘90s club kids. “As a group, we are going to do a Jane Fonda-workout theme,” store manager Carlysle Stonehouse says, about their dress-up plans with American Apparel bodysuits and legwarmers. Seems a lot of shoppers want to go back to the bellbottoms and short-shorts of the 1970s. “[The look] is an easy one; we have people doing it all of the time,” Stonehouse says, by throwing together American Apparel running shorts, wrist bands, headbands, and double stripped knee-high socks. easily applied for a zombie effect. “They are so easy; you just slap them on with fresh water then add blood,” Dobo says. “You can zombify anything.” The same goes for a vampire, she says, noting you can wear anything and just add teeth, makeup, and maybe some costume contact lenses, and look like a hungry blood-sucker. But after all of these years in the biz, what Dobo loves the most this time of year is seeing what the customers come up with on their own, using what they find in the store to make a uniquely freaky costume.

2585 West Broadway 604-221-9599 ThaiCuisineByMontri.com Open for dinner TuesdaySunday from 5:00pm. If you’ve been around the local restaurant scene long enough, you may remember the original Montri’s, which was one of the first Asian restaurants in Vancouver to actually have a serious wine list and employ a full-time sommelier to run it. Owner/ chef Montri Rattanaraj was legendary for both his hospitality and his cuisine, and was a big reason for the eventual mainstream success of Thai food in Vancouver. Part of his success may

have been the five years he spent in Copenhagen before moving to Canada, learning about the fine-dining hospitality trade and perfecting his technique. He opened the original Montri’s here in 1990 and had a great run for four years, before a family tragedy called him back to Thailand in 1994. He sold the business to Antonio Corsi, who went on to open the Quattro restaurants. In Thailand, he then helped open the Four Seasons in Bangkok while wrapping up his family affairs, running their food and beverage program, before returning to Vancouver a year later. He then re-opened Montri’s on Broadway and Alma, and successfully ran it for 11 years, until retirement beckoned in ’06. After almost a decade of travelling between Thailand and Vancouver, it turned out retirement was a bit tame, and the third incarna-

tion of Montri’s was born earlier this year, taking over the short-lived Salt Tasting Room space on West Broadway. The wine list is still as strong, and as varied. A healthy selection of reasonably-priced by-the-glass options and bottles with minimal mark-ups heavily favour white varietals. One stunner was the Kanazawa 2013 Nomu from the Okanagan, a blend of Viognier, Semillon, and Orange Muscat. It’s a list that’s designed to balance out the blend of fundamental elements that make up most Thai food: sweet, spicy, salty, sour and bitter. Most of the dishes hover between the $10 and $14-mark, and though these are great for sharing, I wouldn’t call most of them small.

KITSILANO A starter of Thai fish cakes (normally made with white fish like basa or cod), are here made entirely from prawn, seasoned with curry paste and studded with finely chopped green beans. Sided with a sweet chili sauce loaded with fresh cucumber, it’s a fun dish, although one could wish for the provenance of the prawns to be as clear as that of the salmon (the latter is local and wildcaught). Shoo-shee pla (salmon in red curry and coconut sauce) is delectable and worth the $19 price tag. The fish is beautifully cooked, moist flesh with a crisped skin, and the sauce is thick and fragrant. Spoon the remnants over the coconut rice so as not to waste. One of the bigger dishes – and definitely meant for a group of at least three or four – is the pla lard prig, a whole fish, usually perch or seabass, deep-fried and laden with Montri’s secret sauce, Thai basil, ginger and kaffir. It’s market price, but count on around $28-$38 depending

on the size. A group of us fought over the cheeks and licked the bones clean. This is also one of the few places I’d recommend the gai-yang, a half-chicken marinated in coconut milk, chargrilled and sliced. The kitchen is run by Krisana Onsamer, and Montri himself handles the wine and front of house. It’s a small, bright room that seems constantly busy, so think about reservations, although there do seem to regularly be seats for walk-ins. I’ll admit that wine isn’t my first thought on Halloween. Ghost, goblins, haunted houses and candy are far more likely to spring to mind. When it comes to beverages, pumpkin spiced lattes and lagers may be in keeping with the theme but they aren’t strong enough to fortify against the onslaught of trick-or-treaters. So wine it is. I am not looking for any fancy flavoured stuff, just a good glass to sip on that somehow marks the parade of fiendish costumes. I am fine with kitschy labels as long as the juice inside the bottle delivers. It’s amazing what you can find when you start

This white is crafted from the indigenous Feteasca ă Alba ă grape, which at over 2.000 years old means it is even more ancient than our illustrious vampire friend. Dry, clean and citrusy with loads of fresh pear, it also makes for a much more agreeable party guest.

Gang Signs explore the spooky side of dance music ALEX HUDSON @chippedhip

So far, 2015 has been something of a juggling act for Peter Ricq. Not only has he been keeping up a busy schedule as an illustrator and animator, he also put out an album as one-half of the party-starting dance duo Humans and issued a farewell EP with his now-defunct electro-luau band Ladyfrnd. The latest in this flurry of releases is Geist, his first full-length as frontman of the trio Gang Signs. For Ricq, along with singerkeyboardist Matea Sarenac and drummer Adam Fink, this debut album has been several years in the making. Gang Signs formed in 2012, and Ricq explains during a phone call with Westender, “I

wanted it to be a surf-rock/garage-rock thing with electronic beats and synths. I guess I wasn’t good enough to play fast and I wasn’t good enough to sing loud and scream, and Matea wasn’t really into yelling.” By the time they released their self-titled debut EP in August of 2012, they had settled into a shadowy post-punk style. For Geist, they strove to continue their evolution and ramp up the intensity of their sound. “When we put out the EP, so many people were coming up to me after they heard it and were like, ‘This is my make-out record,’” Fink says with a chuckle. “And so we said, ‘Okay, well let’s up the ante on this and make it a straight-up

REVIEWS // CHEATAHS

Mythologies (Wichita Recordings) Cheatahs hails from London, UK, (despite being comprised of members from the US, Germany, England, and Canada) and with Mythologies, the band offers their first full-length album after a string of EPs and singles over the past three years. According to the band’s bio, Mythologies takes its name “from Roland Barthes’ 1957 collection of essays on semiotics and myth, which influenced the record along with such varied themes and inspirations as: Freudian ‘screen memory,’ the fluidity of recollection, meta-modernism, hospitalization on tour, syndicalism, dramatist Dennis Potter, Early music and neo-mysticism (to name a few).”

Judging by their attempt to contextualize their work in the most esoteric of terms, this is clearly a band that desperately wants to be taken seriously as artists. Ok, we get it.You’ve more than proved how utterly pretentious you are. But here’s the thing: while it would be easy to write the band off entirely from that one eye-rolling paragraph alone, you’d be missing out on a fantastic album if you did. This is ambient art-punk perfected: reverb drenched

having-sex record.’” Despite this raunchy mandate, Geist is more eerie than it is sexy. With atmospheric arrangements that combine live rock band instrumentation with thumping electronic beats and crooned duet vocals, it resembles the XX’s moody minimalism as if repurposed for the dance floor. The dark tone is made all the more unnerving by the fact that Ricq’s lyrics are almost exclusively inspired by horror movie plots. “I like the ones that are more sci-fi, like The Thing and The Fly,” the singer says in regards to his taste in scary films. “I find horror movies have a lot of really good love plots. It can be like a romantic comedy, with love suspense. What would you vocals soar indecipherably over droning distorted guitars, and underneath the textural soundscapes the band creates some infectious – if not hypnotic – melodies. The band may have been beaten to their sound by the likes of Deerhunter,Viet Cong and even the criminally underappreciated New Zealand band Die! Die! Die!, but Cheatahs’ songs are infinitely more listenable. In their poppier moments, the band even recalls the ‘90s experimentation of SonicYouth and Smeared-era Sloan. And while it’s obvious a great deal of experimentation went in to the creation of this album, however, it never sounds self-indulgent. The music speaks for itself: Cheatahs are indeed artists. Gifted ones at that. –Robert Mangelsdorf Rating: !!!!!

do for your loved one? I like that aspect to it.” Although Ricq’s horror movie references are never explicit, the creepy vibes seep into every cut on Geist. Opener “Mate” begins the record with spaciously echoing guitar tones, eerily skittering beats and spectral, reverb-doused vocal interplay from Ricq and Sarenac, with the track eventually coalescing into a burbling dance groove. These icy vibes are replaced by an industrial surge of aggressive electro-rock on “LA on Monday,” while “Tonight” features lyrics by Sarenac and makes a departure into seductive soulpop. Of the latter song, Fink observes with a laugh, “It’s the only one that’s not about horror movies.” These immersive, sonically

rich tracks make Geist the kind of record that’s equally suited to banging club parties or late-night headphone listening. “We always describe it as dance music for people who don’t like dancing,” Fink jokes. That being said, the songs become even more adrenalized during live shows, when the band jams out upbeat passages and embraces its most energetic tendencies; all three members have extensive experience as DJs, so they’re adept at presiding over a rapturous rager. The trio has a scattering of tour dates planned for the coming months, and the musicians hope to hit the studio to record some songs for a short EP soon. Meanwhile, the ever-busy Ricq has

NEON INDIAN

VEGA INTL. Night School (Mom + Pop) Sometimes you just need to party. Sometimes you just need to say “Fuck it! I’m staying out all night, I’m doing whatever any random stranger gives me, and I’m not coming in to work tomorrow.” Alan Palomo, the man behind Neon Indian, knows the feeling. VEGA INTL. Night School represents his second shot at following up 2011’s sublime Era Extraña: after Palomo stayed out all night and passed out on his friend’s doorstep, an entire album’s worth of new tunes went missing when his laptop was stolen off his party-ravaged corpse. On VEGA INTL. Night School, Palomo takes us back to the spirit of that fateful night.

Gone are Era Extraña’s 8-bit chip tunes, as VEGA INTL.Night School trades the Nintendos for keytars and cocaine computers, resulting in something that’s simultaneously futuristic and nostalgic. It’s sexy, messy fun, like a sun-drenched orgy of Commodore 64s. Most songs keep the BPMs under 100, so suffice it to say these are largely slow jams. The tropical beats are interspersed with random cartoon and TV samples, reminiscent of plunderphonic pioneers, the Avalanches.

finished a graphic novel, and next year will direct a featurelength horror movie. Audiences can expect these works to channel the artist’s signature spooky style. “I think the overall aesthetic of the stuff that Pete does – if it’s Humans or if it’s Gang Signs or if it’s his comics or his animation – it does have a very ‘Peter Ricq’ vibe to it for sure,” Fink observes. “If I see a piece somewhere and I don’t know it’s Pete’s, I can usually recognize it as his right away.” W

GANG SIGNS

Performs at Fortunae Sound Club on Nov. 5 with Mesa Luna and Heroshe. Tickets $10 at Red Cat, Zulu, and online at BPLive.ca

The album kicks off with the requisite minute-long interlude, before launching into “Annie”, a sunny groove over a skanking beat reminiscent of Carly Simon’s amazing “Why DoesYour Love Hurt So Much”. Dance floor bangers like “The Glitzy Hive” and “Slumlord” are nearly impossible not to move to, while “C’est La Vie (Say the Casualties!)” sees the party reach its reckless, unhinged apex. While some might argue the album is lacking standout singles the calibre of Era Extraña’s “Polish Girl”, VEGA INTL. Night School begs to be played start to finish:This is a party album, and this party is going all night long. Just don’t forget to call in sick to work. –Robert Mangelsdorf Rating: !!!!!

Cock tackles the hard stuff KRISTYN ANTHONY @allovthethings

In 2009, British playwright Mike Bartlett would find himself on walks through London during the writing of his next piece – a play centred not entirely on sexuality, but with a tighter focus on relationships and personal identity, and the

fight to achieve them. Stumbling into late night cock fights, Bartlett started drawing parallels between the idea of these two creatures fighting to be heard; similar to domestic relationships, where egos can appear in the bloody sport of ripping each other apart. Cock is now an awardwinning production that has

played to audiences in London’s West End, on Broadway, and now Vancouver’s Rumble Theatre takes it on. Under artistic director Stephen Drover, Cock opens Oct. 30 and centres around John, a man who, having recently ended a long term relationship with his boyfriend, falls for a woman. “It’s about sexuality, but

it’s more complex than just labels,” Drover explains. “Sexuality is more fluid than a labelled system allows.” Suddenly everyone wants to know who John is, who he’s sleeping with, and who it makes him as a person. “People are infinitely more complex than even they know,” Drover says. “We talked in rehearsal

about the idea that everyone is a little bit bisexual. Societal norms can squash and repress that.” He chuckles at the notion of the title, and the obvious attention it brings, but says the show isn’t as vulgar as it may come across. “This is a play teenagers really should see.” Drover stuck tightly to the original script and stage direction, which is minimal. There isn’t a set, no props, no furniture and a strict adherence to the forbidding

of any miming. Undoubtedly a challenge for the cast, he says it allowed for more freedom, and artistic choices, resulting in a very actor-driven play. “What drew me to this project was that I don’t think it comes down one way or the other on the issue, or makes a bold statement,” Drover says. “Instead, it asks questions.” & ,12: 1%/4! +2?) FILM & TV

The long road to Chelah Horsdal Sabrina Furminger Reel People @Sabrinarmf

Chelah Horsdal didn’t embrace acting until she was 29, but the decade between her graduation from Lord Byng Secondary and the launch of her acting career was anything but quiet. Before she was one of Vancouver’s busiest film and television actresses, Horsdal was a model, a waitress on a Caribbean island, a restaurant manager in Whistler, an event planner, a publicist, and a voice-over talent agent. “I went and did everything else for 10 years,” laughs Horsdal, 42, in an interview at a Kitsilano café, mere blocks from her childhood home. “There were a bunch of false starts before I came out as an actor.” She’d gotten a taste of acting in high school (playing a high-class call girl on The Hat Squad), but it wasn’t until she was in her late 20s, at a critical juncture in her voice agent career, that she realized that acting – and not anything else she’d attempted – was her bona-fide calling.

But despite the self-deprecating talk of false starts, Horsdal doesn’t regret the decade she spent doing “everything else.” “I feel like I had a tremendous advantage in that I had lived my life fully for over 10 years out in the world, not trying to be anything or trying to achieve anything, so it gave me more gravitas and more understanding of humanity and learning about people without it being a narcissistic ten years,” says Horsdal. Since immersing herself in the acting sphere, Horsdal has stolen her fair share of scenes in an array of indie and studio screen projects, including Arrow, Supernatural,Battlestar Galactica, The Killing,Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Blackstone. She delivered Leo Awardnominated turns in Arctic Air, When Calls the Heart, and 2010’s The Hostage, and is nominated for a Best Actress UBCP/ACTRA Award for her work as Maggie Palmer on AMC’s Hell onWheels. The nomination comes a couple of months after Horsdal officially wrapped on Hell onWheels, which concludes its five-season run in 2016. Hell onWheels explores the corruption, violence, and

Vancouver actress Chelah Horsdal. Melissa Gidney Photo intrigue that swirled around the construction of the FirstTranscontinental Railroad in the wake of the American CivilWar. “[Maggie] made me a lot more comfortable in my skin,” says Horsdal of her character, a no-nonsense cattle rancher. “I will miss her fighting spirit. I will miss her clothes.” As Maggie, Horsdal shared the bulk of her scenes with legendary Irish actor Colm Meaney (The Commitments; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). “I learned a tremendous amount from Colm: how to own things, and how to have

the courage to ask for what you want,” says Horsdal. “He goes about it in the most direct way possible. God, I love him so much. He curses like no one else, and he’s always this far away from a wink and a smile.” AMC has yet to announce an airdate for the final seven episodes of Hell onWheels, but Horsdal has already moved on: to The X-Files, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce,The Man in the High Castle, and Patterson’s Wager. The latter – a quirky independent feature film – will

and his story had never really been cohesively told, integrating the personal and the professional,” says Horsdal. The film is still in its earliest stages of development, but has already experienced a significant shift in direction, says Horsdal. “I started with the clear intention of wanting it to be a piece about his career, and the arc of his career, but as we have begun to get into it, people who I trust keep coming back to me and saying, ‘no, it’s kind of the father-daughter, that’s the story that’s begging to be told,’” says Horsdal. “One of the primary reasons that it took me so long to admit that I was an actor was because my father is a professional artist, and I was like, ‘nope, I don’t want that life.’ Now I recognize that that was just me trying to protect myself.” W

screen this December as part of the 2015Whistler Film Festival. Patterson’sWager teams Horsdal up with Corner Gas’ Fred Ewanuik, whose character discovers in the first moments of the film that he can see two minutes into the future. Horsdal’s character – Audrey, the love interest – is forced to make sense of this superpower, through the lens of her own paranormal baggage. “I think it’s a sweet movie. I love that it’s a movie that’s appropriate for anyone to see,” says Horsdal, who was cast after director O. Corbin Saleken saw her in a PSA about tax incentives she’d self-produced during the Save BC Film campaign. “I thought it was sweet. I just keep saying the word sweet, which sounds patronizing to the film, but it really is an easy movie to watch.” There’s another film in Horsdal’s future that probably won’t ring as sweet or easy: a documentary about her father, Canadian folk music legendValdy. “My dad was named to the Order of Canada three years ago, and I recognized the fact that here he had this prolific career as a Canadian storyteller, philanthropist, and activist,

Air India [remembered] KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

On June 23, 1985,Air India Flight 182 disappeared off air traffic control radar near the coast of Ireland with 329 passengers and crew bound for Delhi. As initial Irish search and rescue efforts turned to the grim task of recovery, news of the Air India disaster was just reaching a small family on Dublin Street in NewWestminster, BC. For them, the fate of an aunt and uncle, and a young son waiting for them at

home in India, began unfolding live on television. For the people of Cork, however, the community closest to where the wreckage of the plane now lay scattered across the ocean, the tragedy was unfolding before their very eyes. “People didn’t really know initially why this had happened,” says Jürgen Simpson, a Dublin-born composer and Air India researcher. “In many ways the initial response of people here in Ireland was really just a response to experiencing that degree of loss off the Irish coastline.”

In 1985, the cause was almost unheard of. That morning, as it traveled through Irish airspace at an altitude of 31,000 feet, Air India Flight 182 was destroyed by a bomb. All 329 Canadians, Indians, Americans and Britons on board were killed, including 82 children. Some were killed instantly, others died of hypoxia (lack of oxygen), while still more died of drowning in the sea below. Entire families were lost in the disaster. And, earlier the same day, a second bomb meant for another Air India flight went off prematurely at Narita International Airport inTokyo, killing two baggage handlers and bringing the total death toll of the attack to 331. Flight 182 was the largest mass murder in Canadian history, the first time a jumbo jet had ever been bombed, and the deadliest terror attack involving a plane until the events of Sept. 11, 2001.The bomb’s journey began in the cargo hold of a connecting flight fromVancouver and killed 280 Canadians when it ultimately detonated on the flight out of Montreal. The suspects – Sikh separatists operating in British Columbia – had been under surveillance by Canada’s intelligence agency, CSIS, for months before the flight was downed.Yet the loss of lives and bungled investigation was largely treated as a non-Canadian issue and wiped from the collective consciousness. It was instead acknowledged most eloquently in Ireland, where Irish seamen aboard naval ships, merchant ships and fishing trawlers entered shark-infested waters to find what they could, and families from around the world filled the halls of the small county hospitals to identify the 131 bodies that were recovered.

Within the year, the people of Cork would start a grassroots fundraising campaign to build an Air India memorial along their coast. “I think Ireland was wishing to embrace the tragedy and embrace the people affected by it,” says Simpson, who was just 10 at the time of the bombing. Cork, in 1985, had never seen that kind of influx of ethnicities says Simpson, and people with brown skin were a rare sight. “There was a gorgeous quote from one of the newspapers back in 1985,” Simpson recalls, “telling the children that if they see people on the street who look strange, they should bring them flowers.” For days after, children could reportedly be seen on sidewalks carrying dandelions bound up in tin foil. Thirty years later, Air India family members still come to the lovingly tended, windswept overlook of the Ahakista memorial to mourn their dead and spend time with the people who quietly, gracefully witnessed their grief. And, over the past seven years, Simpson has been working on commissions to create an artistic response to what happened in this community – what it must have been like to welcome grief-stricken strangers to the furthest edges of Europe. He says he struggled to find a way to express the full scope of the tragedy, though, until a book arrived in the mail filled with the words of Vancouver poet Renée Sarojini Saklikar. Saklikar was 23 when she lost her aunt Zebunnisa and uncle Umar to the Air India disaster. The couple, both doctors, had been in America for a medical conference and decided to spontaneously visit to their relatives in Vancouver for the first time. They then decided to leave early because they missed their young son, placing them on the fatal flight home. Only her aunt’s body was ever found. For years afterward, Saklikar says she and her parents avoided talking about the tragedy. She is still reticent to discuss the morning they heard the news, calling her memories of that day sacred. Saklikar, who is married to BC NDP leader Adrian Dix, was born in India but came to Canada with her family when she was just a few months old. After living in a number of cities back east, they ultimately settled in New Westminster, where her father distinguished

Vancouver poet Renée Saklikar, who lost family in the bombing of Flight 182, lends her words to air india [redacted] – a musical theatre experience running Nov. 6-11 at the SFU Goldcorp Centre honouring the 30th anniversary of the disaster. Dan Toulgoet photo himself as a United Church minister and school trustee. It wasn’t until his sudden death in 2002 that Saklikar, by then a lawyer and businesswoman, finally began writing. “I think with so many people the way they come to writing, sadly, is through trauma,” says Saklikar, now a creative writing instructor at SFU. After her father’s death, she joined a creative writing program and over the next few years began chronicling her life through poetry. When she came to 1985, though, she couldn’t move forward. “I was writing essentially a memoir,” she recalls, “and once I got to 1985 that silencing again kicked in. I didn’t want to talk about it, didn’t want to write about it – I just wanted to write around it. And of course the more I tried to write around it, the more I couldn’t write anything.” Eventually, her desire to write “overpowered everything else”, and she created children of air india: un/authorized exhibits and interjections, published in 2013 by Nightwood Editions. The collection of documentary-style poems – through painstakingly researched detail and jarringly real and imagined scenarios – paints a devastating portrait of the people whose lives were forever altered by the blast. As you explore the book, which was a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize

and won the 2014 Canadian Authors Association Award for Poetry, thousands of official documents and memories are rendered into fragments of exhibits, courtrooms, living rooms, lives. Children’s laughter flutters the pages forward and unflinching language force you to put it down. There is anger in every use of italics, advocacy in every redacted name – the private ordeal becoming a painful matter of public record. For that reason, her own perspective is largely written out of the book, hinted at only in the narrator, N, and the legal overtones of some of the passages. In fact, the only name that does survive in the book is that of Saklikar’s orphaned cousin Irfan, who is now in his 30s with two children of his own. “You come up against the limitations of art when you deal with a horrific tragedy,” says Saklikar, who last week was named the inaugural poet laureate for Surrey. “There is that very famous German philosopher, [Theodor] Adorno, who said that after the Holocaust all poetry is obscene. So I think any poet of any merit has to struggle with that. But I reject [Adorno]. I think it’s a very good caution against sentiment, but in the end, for me, witnessing is important. This became an act of witness.”

Eating organ meats has long been a healthy tradition that can be traced back centuries. Some cultures believe that eating the organs from a healthy animal supports the organs of the eater. In our Western world, eating organs is reserved for our grandparents’ era, zombies and the Greyhound bus (too soon?). Eating organs may sound gross to many of us, but traditionally it was seen as a way of treating people for specific ailments in conjunction to the organ they were eating. For example, a person with a weak heart would eat the heart of a healthy animal. Similarly, eating the brains of a healthy animal was believed to support clear thinking, and animal kidneys were fed to people suffering from urinary maladies. Weston A. Price, a Cleveland dentist also nicknamed the “Isaac Newton of Nutrition”, found that nearly every culture placed a high value on consuming animals in their entire form, this including organs, blood, bones, and everything else you can think of and are probably cringing at. A far cry from Western culinary snobbery, in which we limit animal

foods to muscle tissue. We clearly need to live a little and get down with the animal organ-eating train. Or, like myself, you might feel OK with the parts you are currently eating after reading what’s happening around the world. Most people are already eating like the zombie apocalypse is here to stay, and some countries it’s not uncommon to eat animals while they are still alive (yes, that’s really a thing). Some of us are already resorting to zombielike behavior. Let’s take a look at some of the funky delicacies around the world. But be warned, this is not for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach. In fact, I gagged several times reading about some of these.

BLOOD TOFU

Duck, sheep, chicken and cow’s blood come together in a playful union to look like chocolate chunks; but chocolate this is not. The blood has a jelly-like consistency, I guess to satisfy your inner Vampire. Thanks for this one, China.

We can thank Southeast Asia for this weird trend of eating developing duck embryo boiled alive and served in the shell. It’s no wonder that it’s usually served with beer: you need something to help you forget what you just ate.

HABU SAKE

SHIOKARA

On the beautiful island of Okinawa, Japan they are doing interesting things with their booze. They are drawing snakes in jars of sake so that they release their venom into the wine, to create a beverage that is said to enhance the male libido, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “trouser snake”.

And now, on Nov. 6, Vancouver can share in that act anew; with poems from children of air india making their world premiere at the SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in an operatic theatre piece entitled air india [redacted]. Just under two years prior, in a moment of pure inspiration, an audience member at one of Saklikar’s readings bought a copy of her book and sent it to Jürgen Simpson in Ireland. That audience member was Owen Underhill, conductor of the Turning Point Ensemble in Vancouver, who had been keeping up with his Irish friend and colleague’s efforts regarding Air India over the years. Simpson says he knew right away that Saklikar’s text was the final key to capturing the Canadian, Irish and Indian perspectives in one. All three artists joined forces and began working on air india [redacted] alongside Irish theatre and opera director Tom Creed and visual artist John Galvin. “In a way, it’s a response to a response to a response,” says Creed of the project’s layers. “Renée’s poetry re-

A victim of the Air India bombing which killed 329 people on June 23, 1985, is removed from Cork Airport on a stretcher. Photo courtesy of Irish Times ally unlocks a kind of anger; when you read the words on the page there’s a ferocity to it. It really bears witness to the personal experience of these people, the frustration of sitting in the courtroom with high-tech technology to protect the witnesses, which was more sophisticated than the technology at the airport.” Using a blend of theatre, voice, poetry and visual projections, air india [redacted] transports the viewer to select moments before, during, and after the bombing. “In a really poetic and not explicit way,” adds the Cork-born Creed, “it also conjures up elements of being in the air, being in the water, and the music attempts to ask ‘How do we

SEX

Free Will Astrology Alternative dating apps By Rob Brezsny On a January morning in 1943, the town of Spearfish, South Dakota experienced very weird weather. At 7:30am, the temperature was –4 F. In the next two minutes, due to an unusual type of wind sweeping down over nearby Lookout Mountain, thermometers shot up 49 degrees. Over the next hour and a half, the air grew even warmer. But by 9:30am, the temperature had plummeted back to –4 F. I’m wondering if your moods might swing with this much bounce in the coming weeks. As long as you keep in mind that no single feeling is likely to last very long, it doesn’t have to be a problem. You may even find a way to enjoy the breathtaking ebbs and flows. Halloween costume suggestion: roller coaster rider, Jekyll and Hyde, warm clothes on one side of your body and shorts or bathing suit on the other.

How dare you be so magnetic and tempting? What were you thinking when you turned up the intensity of your charm to such a high level? I suggest you consider exercising more caution about expressing your radiance. People may have other things to do besides daydreaming about you. But if you really can’t bring yourself to be a little less attractive – if you absolutely refuse to tone yourself down – please at least try to be extra kind and generous. Share your emotional wealth. Overflow with more than your usual allotments of blessings. Halloween costume suggestion: a shamanic Santa Claus; a witchy Easter Bunny.

In the last 10 days of November and the month of December, I suspect there will be wild-card interludes when you can enjoy smart gambles, daring stunts, cute tricks, and mythic escapades. But the next three weeks will not be like that. On the contrary. For the immediate future, I think you should be an upstanding citizen, a well-behaved helper, and a dutiful truth-teller. Can you handle that? If so, I bet you will get sneak peaks of the fun and productive mischief that could be yours in the last six weeks of 2015. Halloween costume suggestion: the most normal person in the world.

Members of the gazelle species known as the springbok periodically engage in a behavior known as pronking. They leap into the air and propel themselves a great distance with all four feet off the ground, bounding around with abandon. What evolutionary purpose does this serve? Some scientists are puzzled, but not naturalist David Attenborough. In the documentary film Africa, he follows a springbok herd as it wanders through the desert for months, hoping to find a rare rainstorm. Finally it happens. As if in celebration, the springboks erupt with an outbreak of pronking. “They are dancing for joy,” Attenborough declares. Given the lucky breaks and creative breakthroughs coming your way, Cancerian, I foresee you doing something similar. Halloween costume suggestion: a pronking gazelle, a hippety-hopping bunny, a boisterous baby goat.

“A very little key will open a very heavy door,” wrote Charles Dickens in his short story Hunted Down. Make that one of your guiding meditations in the coming days, Leo. In the back of your mind, keep visualizing the image of a little key opening a heavy door. Doing so will help ensure that you’ll be alert when clues about the real key’s location become available. You will have a keen intuitive sense of how you’ll need to respond if you want to procure it. Halloween costume suggestion: proud and protective possessor of a magic key.

The ancient Hindu text known as the Kama Sutra gives extensive advice about many subjects, including love and sex. “Though a man loves a woman ever so much,” reads a passage in chapter four, “he never succeeds in winning her without a great deal of talking.” Take that as your cue, Virgo. In the coming weeks, stir up the intimacy you want with a great deal of incisive talking that beguiles and entertains. Furthermore, use the same approach to round up any other experience you yearn for. The way you play with language will be crucial in your efforts to fulfill your wishes. Luckily, I expect your persuasive powers to be even greater than they usually are. Halloween costume suggestion: the ultimate salesperson.

Westender.com

I encourage you to be super rhythmical and melodious in the coming days. Don’t just sing in the shower and in the car. Hum and warble and whistle while shopping for vegetables and washing the dishes and walking the dog. Allot yourself more than enough time to shimmy and cavort, not just on the dance floor but anywhere else you can get away with it. For extra credit, experiment with lyrical flourishes whenever you’re in bed doing the jizzle-skazzle. Halloween costume suggestion: wandering troubadour, street musician, freestyling rapper, operatic diva, medicine woman who heals with sound.

I expect you to be in a state of continual birth for the next four weeks. Awakening and activation will come naturally. Your drive to blossom and create may be irresistible, bordering on unruly. Does that sound overwhelming? I don’t think it will be a problem as long as you cultivate a mood of amazed amusement about how strong it feels. To help maintain your poise, keep in mind that your growth spurt is a natural response to the dissolution that preceded it. Halloween costume suggestion: a fountain, an erupting volcano, the growing beanstalk from the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale.

“Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past over and over again.” So says Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield. Can you guess why I’m bringing it to your attention, Sagittarius? It’s one of those times when you can do yourself a big favor by sloughing off the stale, worn-out, decaying parts of your past. Luckily for you, you now have an extraordinary talent for doing just that. I suspect you will also receive unexpected help and surprising grace as you proceed. Halloween costume suggestion: a snake molting its skin.

Speaking on behalf of your wild mind, I’m letting you know that you’re due for an immersion in revelry and festivity. Plugging away at business as usual could become counterproductive unless you take at least brief excursions to the frontiers of pleasure. High integrity may become sterile unless you expose it to an unpredictable adventure or two. Halloween costume suggestion: party animal, hell raiser, social butterfly, god or goddess of delight. Every one of us harbors a touch of crazy genius that periodically needs to be unleashed, and now is that time for you.

Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay Tinder is stupid. It’s making you mad and giving you HPV. So here are a few more apps that will help you find love (or least get you laid).

HINGE

Hinge.co This app is best for cautious daters who don’t really want to admit that they have to use the Internet to get laid and find love. Hinge uses the same swipe system as Tinder, but the net is smaller and it targets only friends of friends or people connected in your Facebook account. Hinge is like that friend who tries to set you up because “you guys would totally get along, you both love beer” or whatever.

HAPPN

Happn.com Happn was invented in Paris, France, by some old gorgeous French guy who was wandering around his beautiful, romantic city smoking his rolled tobacco, thinking about how many people miss the love of their life because of the fast-paced rush and introverted way we all go about our days. No one talks to strangers anymore, because that’s dangerous. Just look at your phone and find relationships. Duh. So, Mr. French invented a dating app called HAPPN, which matches you up with people based on geographical location, common interests

Thinkstock photo and daily routine. So, that pretty girl that’s on your train ride to work that you do not notice because you are too busy flicking through Tinder on your phone, will be introduced to you on HAPPN. He basically had to bring the concept of being social with your surroundings down to the phone, so that we would all look up and open our eyes.

GROUPER

JoinGrouper.com This group dating app is great for the anti-social or for those of you who are looking to go and date outside of the friends you already have. The app sets up a date between two people – using the information like age, education, job, interests, lifestyle – then, those two users invite two friends to accompany them on the date. No one involved gets to see the photos of the people who the original couple are bringing along, so it’s the closest to blind group dating you will get.The app requires everyone put down $20 for the date reservation to avoid petty complications and Grouper picks up the tab on the first round of drinks.

HOW ABOUT WE

HowAboutWe.com HowAboutWe lets you

login and suggest something to do like, “How about grab a six pack and go chase some crows?” Then, you wait to see who responds and go do that thing you just suggested. Like most dating sites that were grown out of the desktop interface and not the app, HowAboutWe requires a paid account is actually make the service worth it. (For example, you can not read the messages in your inbox without a paid account, so what’s the point?) I’m sure this site is riddled with morons who are fucking around, but I also think it’s a pretty tame way to gather a collection of dating stories.

3NDER

3nderApp.com 3nder looks just like Tinder, but it’s for people looking for threesomes. This is probably the easiest and best screening process for bringing that guest star into your sex life. W

EMAIL MISH Send Mish your own sex questions and queries to sex@westender.com

I hope you will chose a Halloween costume that emboldens you to feel powerful. For the next three weeks, it’s in your long-term interest to invoke a visceral sense of potency, dominion, and sovereignty. What clothes and trappings might stimulate these qualities in you? Those of a king or queen? A rock star or CEO? A fairy godmother, superhero, or dragon-tamer? Only you know which archetypal persona will help stir up your untapped reserves of confidence and command.

It’s time to stretch the boundaries, Pisces. You have license to expand the containers and outgrow the expectations and wage rebellion for the sheer fun of it. The frontiers are calling you. Your enmeshment in small talk and your attachment to trivial wishes are hereby suspended. Your mind yearns to be blown and blown and blown again! I dare you to wander outside your overly safe haven and go in quest of provocative curiosities. Halloween costume suggestions: mad scientist, wild-eyed revolutionary, Dr. Who.
