Anchoring Africa’s Integrated Development on Smart Agribusiness

COMPANY PROFILE

Contributing Towards Integrated Development In Africa Serrano Africa is a social enterprise that brings to bare entrepreneurial, business skills, capital and innovation to drive genuine social change and solve Sub Sahara Africa’s household poverty, well being and improve sustainable livelihoods. We work with cross-functional teams and other development communities to fast-track agricultural renaissance for the benefit of Africa’s Small Scale Farmers with heavy emphasis on women and youth. Small scale farmers are faced with major challenges that lead to unsustainable middlemen interactions, poor production, low productivity, limited access to markets, post-harvest produce management and losses, gaps in both financial and information access that collectively conspire to Locke-in farmers in vicious poverty.

From the available literature, 75% of all the food consumed in Kenya is produced by small scale farmers. Of this, 80% is work done by women. It is also interesting to note that 239 million which is 30% of all chronically undernourished 1 billion people in the world are in Africa. Clearly Africa has many development, innovation, political and governance issues of one kind or another to solve. At the apex of which, agricultural renaissance is the one most sure areas that will leap-frog the people on the continent to improved well being, ensure food security and take hold of the process of industrialization. Tapping into the wealth readily available in Africa – youthful talent, leadership, innovativeness, and vast untapped agricultural potential, Serano Africa seeks to positively contribute towards progressive change in the outlook described above by delivering innovative solutions and services.

Energy and Environment for agricultural development

The leadership of Serano Africa is versatile and youthful with a firm belief and bias towards the adoption and use of ICTs and media for agricultural development. Bottom line, the modernization of agriculture is heavily dependent on how innovative we can collectively use available and future ICT tools to realise agricultural renaissance in Africa. Our services provide tools for collaboration, information packaging and easily disseminating it to consumers – the farmer.

Majority if not all small scale farmers in Africa are acutely faced with the challenge of market access. A huge chunk of Serano Africa’s work is in developing markets and widening access. Improving awareness among farmers and making a lead role in information dissemination about markets based on up-to date analytics becomes the stepping stone on this front. We also work in an integrated way with other core players to support a market to produce approach.

It is widely acknowledged that 75% of Africa is in darkness. This reality is a stark reminder to the challenges farmers go through especially in production and post-harvest produce management where major losses occur. Present day vagaries of climate change and sustained degradation of the environment coupled with the energy issue leaves small scale farmer dangerously exposed unpredictable outcomes. Serano Africa is working towards widening possibilities of delivering for farmers: Alternative non-rain fed agriculture support services Affordable, sustainable alternative energy sources for farmers Collaboration on environmental conservation Training farmer communities on draught resilient farming
