“Timeless classic” can be an overused term, but in the case of this “tale as old as time,” it’s fitting. Hard to imagine, but the animated film of this Disney classic came out when much of our audience was in their young adulthood – and today you may be sitting here with your children and grandchildren.
Beauty and the Beast is based on an old French story, and it’s wonder-fully French in its characters and joie de vivre. It’s my favourite kind of musical, awash in romance and adventure, with rich but finely drawn comic characters forming an outstanding ensemble. The songs encompass some of the most beautiful melodies in music theatre history, with a couple of wonderful showstoppers. Theatre exists to move us, and in Beauty’s case it brings laughter, tears, and a fullness in our hearts.
In its message, Beauty is also timeless: who among us has not dreamed of moving beyond our “provincial life” only to find love and life close to home? It is of triumphing over adversity through fellowship and elan, as embodied by our magically transformed characters. It is a family story with which most will identify in one way or another.
WCT is very proud to continue this holiday family tradition here at the Sagebrush. We are also proud to play a part in engendering arts appreciation in young people, many who will attend this production for their first theatregoing experience. Participation in the arts at a young age makes for more confident, communicative, and collaborative citizens. If you have a young person in your life whose imagination and creativity are sparked by this show, please have a look at our Stage One Theatre School – your kids are in excellent hands with our fantastic instructors.
Beauty is a story of transformation, redemption, and discovery. These three elements are also the backbone of the theatregoing experience, where we have transformative experiences that allow us to see the world around us with better understanding, and more love and appreciation for those around us. We know you’ll leave this performance with a smile on your face and a song in your heart, and we hope the glow takes you through the holiday season and into the new year. Thanks for being here, and we’ll see you in 2025.
James MacDonald, Artistic Director
I’m over the moon that Beauty and the Beast — a classic from Disney’s golden age — is the first big musical I get to be part of at Western Canada Theatre. The Kamloops community has embraced me with open arms, and I’m deeply grateful to the land and its people for supporting me as I transition into the role of Executive Director. Thanks to the dedication of James, the WCT staff, Board, donors, and volunteers who keep this theatre so alive. Merde!

Enjoy an evening of re - imagined carols and original winter songs performed by Canadian Folk Music Award - winning ukulele/cello duo, James Hill and Anne Janelle. Presents:
A tale as old as time…truly… This magical love story originated long before print culture, spoken and shared with others for entertainment, and it was, most likely, not as child-friendly as the Disney adaptation we’re sharing with you today. It’s a little wild to think that this story has been around so long, and that those who first heard it could only imagine what these nowbeloved characters looked like. It’s a testament to the power of our imaginations and our love of storytelling that this tale still exists today. Technology now offers us endless ways to select, save, and share stories in a visually immediate way… but maybe there’s magic to be found in time… the time taken to share them personally, the time taken to listen, and the time taken to feel their effect on us. There’s no place that encourages us to embrace magic and imagination more than the theatre, so how exciting that we’re all here together today. Thank you for joining us, and I hope that our production of Beauty and the Beast will excite, inspire, and move you to continue sharing... this magical tale as old as time.

Twitch is thrilled to be back at WCT this season! Twitch is an emerging Stage Manager based in Vancouver, but they also dabble in most things related to technical theatre. Currently, they are working at the Arts Club Theatre Company as a Stagehand! Big love to their family, friends and partner for all of their support.
