WELCOME!

At Western Canada Theatre, we love ringing in the new year with laughter, and what better way than with a raucous comedy about death by acclaimed Canadian theatremaker, Sophia Fabiilli? Our valued partner in this production, Alberta Theatre Projects, shares WCT’s commitment to bringing Canadian playwrights and voices to the forefront. We are proud to team up with them once again.

Liars at a Funeral is–at its heart–a show about family. Family comes in all different forms, different levels of function and disfunction, different amounts of distance or proximity. There are the families that we are born into, and the families that we choose or are adopted into. We all have a role to play, whether we are the new addition, bringing inspiration and life, or the strong matriarch, guiding the way for those around her. A family supports each other through difficult times; they also challenge each other.

Western Canada Theatre is one of those chosen families; a group of people who have been drawn together by their love of live theatre. Everyone comes in with a different set of interests and skills, but that passion for the arts is a constant. Some of us get really excited about silly comedies, and some of us prefer to reflect on the state of the world today. Some of us are constantly singing or dancing through our days, and others prefer to quietly puzzle together numbers. When we come together, we create seasons of theatre that invite our community in and hopefully have a little something for everyone.

Our family loves to share. We welcome new people to our table for each production and hope that they will enjoy themselves and want to come back. When the inevitable parting of the ways happens we get to remember their contributions. We wish them well on their adventures and hope that they will carry with them fond memories of their time here.

When you walk through those theatre doors, you become honourary members of our family, and we look forward to laughing with you, crying with you, and sharing our love of live theatre.

Enjoy the show!

THE WCT FAMILY

The Comedy of Errors

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

I’m thrilled to direct this production of Liars at a Funeral for Western Canada Theatre. I love how Sophia deftly intertwines whip smart comedy with deep heart.

Funerals bring us together in celebration of life and remind us that our time on planet Earth is limited. Funerals can help us feel more human, more empathetic, more connected. They can also stir up longstanding family drama. Sophia finds so many subtle ways to play with the hilarity and truth of family dynamics in this specific circumstance.

Working with set and lighting designer Anton deGroot, costume designer Abbie Brokenshire and sound designer KP Smith is such a treat! We leaned into the feeling a mid-century inspired aesthetic. Anton and I imagined that the funeral home as a repurposed small town diner. This initial set impulse moved all design elements toward this mid-century idea. Although the play is set in 2025, the surroundings are layered with various eras of fashion, music and interior design. This bright and playful approach to the set, sound, costume and lighting design is a nice juxtaposition to the feeling of most funerals and highlights Mavis’ playful approach to death.

The cast is brilliant! Each of them brings such a sense of comic timing, as well as a deep understanding of human nature to their roles. Our stage management team is so collaborative, thoughtful, and prepared. The Western Canada Theatre staff are proactive and filled with creative spirit. It’s such a dream team! It is my hope that Liars at a Funeral can be a source of joy for you and also give you the opportunity to meditate on the liminal nature of our existence in these human bodies. “We’re here for a good time not a long time” are lyrics that play in my mind when rehearsing this play. I feel lucky to share this beauty work with you and hope that you enjoy every moment of it.

With appreciation,
