Letter to the Editor

To the Editor

Interesting to note last week’s Warrnambool Weekly article on online publications produced by Gazette News which made a claim it mainly produces political propaganda.

I would have thought one could legitimately claim only with far greater influence and reaching a far, far, wider audience the same could be said of the monopoly Murdoch/News Corp Print and Broadcast media which basically supports one side of politics coast to coast in Australia.

for new candidates to replace those Teals expected to lose their seats in the forthcoming election. Well, we all know there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

As for our roads, any allocated Federal funding given to the Andrews/Allan Governments for distribution has been gobbled up on the SRL in particular and goodness knows how many millions by hiring numerous consultants to tell the Andrews/Allan State Governments what their problems are, when all they need do is look in the mirror!

Come on Alex Dyson are you truly independent? I have done a Google search, which reveals differently.

The Melbourne Age 2 weeks ago quote ‘From $5525 to $540,000: Ex- radio host’s whopping camp again war chest’.

Over recent weeks I’ve read numerous articles in the Herald Sun, Sky News etc. all stating the main bulk of your funding is coming from Climate 200, who are looking

Mr Tehan is promising millions of dollars to various places in Wannon, including sports clubs, but we must note the caveatOnly if the Coalition wins government.

If Mr Tehan wins Wannon but the Coalition loses, there will be no funding. This is a classic example of pork

However, words are cheap, and unless followed by action should not be trusted. The Warrnambool Surf Lifesaving Club is a case in point.

Mr Tehan promised $6 million at the 2022 election, with no funding eventuating.

The same is likely to be the case for his promised Colac Imperials Football Netball Club upgrade to the netball courts, and his promised upgrade to the Elliminyt Recreation Reserve Main Sports Pavilion. Roads are another example that words without action are meaningless.

Mr. Tehan has promised to fix Wannon’s roads since 2010, so why hasn’t he delivered after all these years, including many with the Coalition in power?

Even his 2019 election promise of $60 million to fix the Princes Highway between Warrnambool and Port Fairy never materialised despite the Coalition winning that election.

Promises that only surface at election time are empty and should not be trusted. With predictions of a hung parliament, independents and minor parties will hold the balance of power.

Alex Dyson, as an independent, would be in a strong position to negotiate for what Wannon truly needs.

Alex Dyson’s failure to take a position on whether he is for or against the offshore wind zone is troubling.

If you vote for Labor you will get the offshore wind farm and if you vote Liberal you won’t get an offshore windfarm. Mr Dyson is trying to be all things to all people, but that’s not how politics works. Politics is about standing up for what you believe in and having the courage to argue your position.

If Mr Dyson can’t do his own research and reach a position on the worth of a local project, how is he going to decide on issues of national security?

Mr Dyson needs to get off the fence and tell voters of Wannon what he truly believes, if he is genuine about representing us.

As described in an article in The Financial Review published on March 4 he is “the Climate 2200 candidate who won’t commit to wind power.”

Peter Fisher Port Fairy

Brigade trained for medical response

PORT Fairy Fire Brigade is now one of 11 CFA brigades that are trained and ready to respond to select medical Triple Zero calls.

The new program, titled ‘Fire Medical Response,’ officially commenced on December 4 last year.

The program is a joint initiative of CFA and Ambulance Victoria that will see CFA brigades and Ambulance Victoria dispatched simultaneously to cardiac arrests.

The Port Fairy brigade is the first brigade in south-west Victoria to come online as an active Fire Medical Response brigade, responding to cardiac arrests in the local community.

Brigade captain Hugh Worrall said the decision to join the program was an easy one.

“Given the benefits this program will provide the Port Fairy community, we did not hesitate to join,” he said.

“What this program means is that community members who call for an ambulance may receive both a fire vehicle and an ambulance.

“There is no specific order in which the services arrive to the incident.”

Port Fairy Fire Brigade has been training with Ambulance Victoria for months, in preparation for the program which will complement the Ambulance Victoria service in the local area.

CFA deputy chief officer Garry Cook said the program was a natural fit for CFA because of the 52,000 volunteers

Port Fairy Fire Brigade captain Hugh Worrall is thrilled brigade members have been trained to respond to select Triple Zero calls.

across the state.

“CFA has more than 1,100 volunteer fire stations with more than 52,000 members,” Garry said.

“This puts CFA in a unique position to complement the Ambulance Victoria response in 50 locations across Victoria to help deliver early intervention to cardiac arrests.”

Ambulance Victoria executive

director of regional operations, Danielle North, said Victoria’s cardiac survival rates are one of the best in the world, thanks to high rates of early intervention.

“The Fire Medical Response program will improve survival rates for people in rural and regional Victoria,” Danielle said.

“Quick intervention with CPR and a

defibrillator has the greatest impact on improving a patient’s chances of surviving a cardiac arrest.”

The Port Fairy brigade officially commenced as a Fire Medical Response Brigade last Thursday, March 20.

It is believed the Hamilton brigade will also join the program in the near future.

A better deal Wannon for

I love South West Victoria. And every day, I hear from locals who love it too, but who are struggling with real challenges: nurses who can’t afford to live where they work, seniors struggling to get aged care close to home, and everyone dodging potholes on our neglected roads.

Nearly 70 years as a ‘safe seat’ hasn’t served our community well. The political parties ignore us while they chase votes in marginal seats. We can change that.

This is my third time running. I don’t give up easily. And if I have the honour of being your representative, I will fight every day to get Wannon the better deal we deserve.

Independents get results

Just look to Indi in North East Victoria. After decades as a safe seat they went independent. Since being elected, their Independent MP Helen Haines has delivered:

40% of all funding received in Victoria for mobile phone blackspots has gone to Indi

$147m for roads

Powerful legislation to root out corruption in politics

After 50 years - I’m voting independent

“I’ve been a Liberal most of my life. In this time Iʼve seen the neglect only get worse. Alex Dyson is different. Heʼll stand up for what we need, not what a party wants.”

- Charles, Wangoom

The major parties have had their go

“Alex will fight for better healthcare and aged care funding, while giving our young people a chance to stay local. The major parties have had their go. It’s time for someone who’ll speak up for all of us in Wannon.”

- Lorraine, Warrnambool

FIX OUR ROADS

- Get our fair share of funding

- Make sure money goes where it’s needed, not just to win votes.

BETTER CARE

- End childcare waitlists

- More GPs and aged care services

- Double mental health support through Medicare.

COST OF LIVING

- Practical solutions to take control of energy bills

- Crack down on price gouging.

STOP CORRUPTION

- Strengthen the National Anti Corruption Commission.

Koori Karnival this weekend

FOR a taste of culture and some great family-friendly entertainment, head to the Warrnambool Showgrounds this weekend for the inaugural Koori Karnival.

The Karnival, which will run from 10am until 4pm tomorrow (Saturday), is a free community event ‘by Mob for Mob’ and will include amusements, live music, blak markets, food, cultural activities and more.

“The idea of the Karnival is to bring Mob together for a fun day out,” health promotion coordinator with Kirrae Health Services, Thalia Robertson-Wilson said.

“The Koori Karnival is sponsored by The Koori Way, a state-wide population health promotion campaign tackling indigenous smoking and is led by aboriginal community-controlled health organisations across Victoria,” Ms Robertson-Wilson said.

“The Koori Way aims to improve the health of aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by reducing nicotine usage through population health promotion activities like the Koori Karnival.

“The Karnival will be a nicotine-free space, encouraging mob to live, work and play in smoke free places.”

The Karnival will be presented by the Koori Way, Dhauwurd Wurrung Elderly and Community Health Service, Kirrae Health Service Inc, WindaMara Aboriginal Corporation and the Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative.

Double the reason to donate

ALL donations made by the public to the South West Community Foundation next Wednesday and Thursday will be doubled by Beyond Bank.

The South West Community Foundation is a charitably organisation that holds a permanent fund, providing grants in support of a wide range of community projects and activities across south west Victoria.

The Warrnambool branch of Beyond Bank has this week pledged to double all donations made to the foundation on April 2 and 3, to a maximum total of $10,000.

“We are thrilled to be the Beyond Bank Double Donation Day partner for 2025,” executive officer for the foundation, Annabel Cussen said.

“This is such a good opportunity for us to have a greater impact in our community and to support more community activities and projects.

“For every grant we give, three applicants miss out, so every dollar counts. Now, thanks to Beyond Bank, every donated dollar will have double the impact.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the South West Community Foundation is encouraged to do so at Beyond Bank next Wednesday and Thursday, April 2 and 3.

Organisers are looking forward to this weekend’s Koori Karnival in Warrnambool.

Female sport in the spotlight

FEMALE participation in the sport and fitness arena was in the spotlight during a special EmpowerHER Sports Day in Warrnambool last weekend.

The Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club on Pertobe Road was a hive of activity on Sunday, with females of all ages enjoying a range of sports.

For many participants the day offered the chance

to learn about new sports and fitness programs on offer across the district.

This community-driven event was dedicated to empowering women and girls to explore sports and fitness in a supportive, inclusive environment.

With sports participation among women in the south west region declining from 53.4 per cent in 2017 to just 32 per cent in 2024, the event addressed an important issue while showcasing the impact of

sports on confidence, resilience and well-being. Throughout the day participants were able to learn about the many and varied range of sports available for females across the south west and were able to try some of the sports and activities on offer. This included boxing for fitness, pickleball, table tennis, touch football and more.

Participants also enjoyed live music and food trucks.

Alison from Folima’s Fitness and Boxing spoke about the health benefits of the sport.
Angus, Finn, Tamara and Indie from Warrnambool Touch Football.
Tina and Emma enjoy the day.
Bonnie and Madeline represented Warrnambool Wolves Soccer Club.
Jodie Hill from women’s health and wellbeing, Barwon Health (South West).
David from the Warrnambool Table Tennis Association encouraged visitors to enjoy a game.
Sylvia enjoyed the chance to play table tennis.

Daisy continues to lead

WARRNAMBOOL’S Daisy Ye has embarked on the next step of her leadership journey - a natural progression for the cofounder of the city’s multicultural association.

The city council employee is delighted to be part of Leadership Great South Coast’s (LGSC) 2025 cohort, with the program beginning this month.

“It has been enlightening, inspiring, and incredibly mindful in creating a brave space for everyone,” Ms Ye said.

“The structure is outstanding, the attention to detail is unbelievableI’ve never attended a training session

where even the background music is so thoughtfully curated.

“A huge shoutout to the amazing team behind the program for their dedication and support, and to the fabulous cohort of participants - what a privilege to be on this journey together toward becoming stronger community leaders.”

The annual LGSC program fosters leadership skills among aspiring and emerging leaders from diverse sectors throughout the south-west.

It aims to build leadership skills through project management, public speaking and volunteering.

The program is best known for its community projects such as Loved & Shared, a now-standalone charity that

was originally a project of the 2020 cohort, Fruit Rescue, the Ngatanwarr mural on South West TAFE and the Indigenous war memorial on the Heywood Water Tower.

The initiative has produced 195 alumni, with 53 community projects delivered and more than $255,000 in scholarships have been awarded to south-west participants.

LGSC board chair Ronda Held welcomed the 2025 cohort and said the group was in for an enlightening and enriching leadership journey.

“The participants will explore what makes a great leader and develop the skills and confidence to make a positive difference in the community,” Ms Held said.

“They will increase their knowledge and understanding of the social, economic

and environmental challenges and opportunities across the Great South Coast and establish a lasting set of personal and professional networks across all sectors of the community.

“Our successful program is about understanding the importance of volunteerism within our community. We know many of our alumni go on to volunteer and give back to their communities during and after they graduate from the program.”

Along with Daisy Ye, the list of participants for 2025 also includes:

WEDNESDAY PARMA NIGHT

Choice of 5 different Parmas served with chips, salad, plus a beer, soft drink or glass of house wine.

Much-loved bears enjoy a picnic

TEDDIES of all shapes and sizes could be seen at Flagstaff Hill last weekend.

The ‘teddy invasion’ saw hundreds of muchloved teddies enjoy a big day out with their proud owners.

More than 745 visitors from across the district converged on the popular Warrnambool tourist attraction for a fun-filled day of activities.

The annual teddy bear’s picnic attracted a large group of families who were eager to take

part in the many activities on offer.

Teddies with seemingly broken limbs, missing eyes or even some well-worn holes took a trip to the ‘hospital’ where they were carefully patched up by the resident ‘nurse.’

Road management plan for Moyne

MOYNE Shire Council has endorsed a motion to seek community feedback on its 2025 Road Management Plan (RMP).

The purpose of the RMP is to ensure council meets the requirements of the state government’s Road Management Act (Regulations) 2016, and to make clear which roads are managed by Moyne Shire.

Mayor Cr Karen Foster said council had also published its Register of Public Roads in conjunction with the RMP as they must be read together.

“The register records road names and locality, dates on which they were declared, and the classification of the roads and how they will be managed in association with other road authorities,” Cr Foster said.

“These are important documents that have an impact on daily life for all our road users. We do encourage community, visitor and industry feedback to the plan.

“The plan establishes a systematic way in which we manage our roads, in addition to community feedback.”

Cr Foster said a key purpose of the RMP was to establish performance standards around road inspections and repairs, and to clarify which bodies were responsible for each of the roads in the shire.

“It helps us consider affordability, available resources and risk management when planning how we look after our roads,” Cr Foster said.

“As required under the regulations, we have set achievable standards to meet road users’ needs and our community’s reasonable expectations of dayto-day maintenance.”

Council will make the plan available for viewing and public comment, with notification to the community via newspapers, local newsletters and social media.

Ezra, India and Asher enjoy their picnic lunch near the water.
Amanda and Harry Sutton relax at the picnic.
Hugh, Sally, Pippa and Nina Mahony enjoy some quiet time indoors.
April, Bobby and Elsie O’Keeffe enjoy the picnic with Macey Searle.
Rebecca and Eden Keane were eager to take their friends to Flagstaff Hill for a picnic.

From tourist to teacher in sister city

AN impromptu visit to Miura in 2017 planted the seed that will now see Brooke Altmann live and work in Warrnambool’s Japanese sister city for the next year.

Brooke successfully applied for the Warrnambool-Miura Cultural Exchange position – a long-running program that sees someone from Warrnambool live in Miura while working as an assistant language teacher in local schools.

Brooke’s friend was in the Cultural Exchange position at the time of her holiday to Japan eight years ago, and urged her to visit as part of her trip.

“I knew that Miura was Warrnambool’s sister city, but I hadn’t planned to go; my friend Courtney Mathew was there and she told me I had to see it; I ended up having the best time,” Brooke said.

“We drove around and saw all the sites and I immediately fell in love with the place.

“The vibes are very Warrnambool.

“It’s a coastal city atmosphere and I really saw the parallels and fell in love with it.”

Eight years on, and with teaching experience as a tutor at Melbourne University, Brooke can’t wait to make the transition from visitor to resident.

“You’re in a really special position because you’re not a tourist, you’re there as a member of the community and you’re integrated into this world that you wouldn’t see if you were just a visitor in Japan,” she said.

“I’ll be participating in festivals and doing things that the ordinary tourist wouldn’t get to see.”

Brooke will begin her role in April, with the position running for one year with the option of additional years.

“I’ll be teaching in a primary school, so I’m really excited to be able to share the culture of Warrnambool with the kids,” she said.

“I’ve heard that they all know about Warrnambool, so I’m excited to share my perspective of Warrnambool too, which includes the breakwater, Thunder Point

and the coastal reserve.”

And with Japan in the midst of a tourism boom and many famous sites extremely busy, Brooke said that Miura was a hidden gem, and that anyone from Warrnambool would receive a warm welcome.

“I really want people who might be aware of the sister city partnership but haven’t thought about visiting before, to consider it because it’s actually a really beautiful place,” she said.

“If you’re wanting an interesting and unique day-trip or multi-day trip in Japan, definitely check out Miura.

“It’s only an hour away from Tokyo on the train, it’s situated in the most beautiful area, it’s coastal, you can go swimming… go check out Miura!”

Warrnambool began its sister city ties with Miura in 1992, with strong bonds of cultural exchange formed between members of both communities in the many years since.

Warrnambool houses the Miura Friendship Garden, and representatives from both cities have experienced each other’s hospitality, most recently with Miura Mayor Hideo Yoshida and a Japanese delegation visiting Warrnambool in August 2024.

Elderly couple injured

AN elderly couple was transported to hospital following a crash in Panmure earlier this week.

The incident occurred shortly before 8pm Monday on the Princes Highway.

Warrnambool Police Constable Daniel Lewis said two people, aged in their mid-70s, were hospitalised following the single vehicle incident.

“One was taken to Warrnambool hospital, and the other was airlifted to Melbourne,” he said.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the couple was conveyed to hospital in a stable condition.

“Paramedics responded to an incident in Panmure at around 7.45pm on Monday evening,” the spokesperson said.

“A male in his 70s was airlifted to The Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with upper body injuries.

“A female in her 70s was transported by road to Warrnambool in a stable condition with upper body injuries.”

Player shelters on the agenda

PLAYER shelters for women at the Warrnambool Football Netball Club are a step closer following last week’s funding pledge by Wannon MP Dan Tehan.

During a visit to the club last Friday, Mr Tehan said an elected Liberal and National Government would provide safe, modern player shelters for women’s teams at the Warrnambool Football Netball Club.

“These shelters would support local female athletes and strengthen

community sport,” Mr Tehan said.

“Female players and supporters need access to inclusive and upgraded facilities. I’ve heard strong feedback from the local community about the need for better facilities for women and girls in sport.

Mr Tehan thanked the local community for advocating for these shelters, ensuring the local women’s teams had the facilities they deserved.

“This investment in player shelters for women’s teams here at this club will provide a safe and comfortable space for female players, volunteers and supporters.”

Wannon MP Dan Tehan last week announced funds would be allocated for player shelters for female teams at Warrnambool Football Netball Club.

Bikes glisten on the lawn

BIKES of all shapes and sizes were glistening on the lawns of Lake Pertobe last weekend.

The new venue proved popular, with well over 40 bikes gathered on Saturday afternoon for the annual Warrnambool Bike Night.

The event once again gave riders and owners the opportunity to show off their prized machines, while locals and visitors to the town were able to browse the bikes on show and speak with owners.

Warrnambool Bike Night is a social gathering of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts, held on the fourth Saturday of every second month in Warrnambool.

Works to create a platypus-friendly habit

A REVEGETATION project at Jubilee Park (Wurrumbit Birrng Yaar) will create a better environment for Merri River platypus.

A number of old cypress trees will be removed from the river bank (including some toppled by recent strong wind) and replaced with native species. The project is a partnership with the Glenelg-Hopkins Catchment Management Authority and alights with the aims of the Green Warrnambool strategy.

“We’ve got a great opportunity to restore habitat that suits native animals including platypus,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said.

“We know that trees such as willow and cypress along our rivers reduce habitat and food supply for aquatic Australian animals.

“They degrade the river bank and compete with native plants. The project will benefit not only platypus but also native fish, birds and invertebrates.

“With some of these cypress trees having recently fallen into the river we have a great opportunity, in dealing with these trees, to have a positive ecological impact.”

While the trees are being removed, a section at the northern end of Jubilee Park will be closed from March 31 to April 11.

As restoration work continues some areas of the park will remain off-limits during April and May.

Weather-permitting, native trees, shrubs and grasses will be planted from June to August.

Members of the Camperdown and District Motorcycle Club enjoyed the Bike Night.

Car enthusiasts enjoy swap meet

MORE than 1100 people gathered at Victoria Park last weekend to enjoy Koroit’s annual Swap Meet Car Show.

Fine weather on Saturday saw large crowds gather at the park to browse more than 65 swap sites.

Organised by members of the Koroit Lions Club, in conjunction with the Warrnambool and District Drag Racing Association, the day proved a great social day out.

“As with most swap meets, it was another great social day out for people who were keen to browse the displays and enjoy the cars that were on show,” Lions club treasurer, David Mathison said.

“While the exact total is not yet known, I believe the day raised around $4,000 and our club will hold some discussions with the drag racing association to determine where that money will go.

“We do have a few projects in mind that we would like to contribute to; all the money stays within the district.”

With the swap meet now over, the Lions club members will soon turn their attention to the upcoming Koroit Irish Festival where they will again help out on the day.

“The Irish Festival is always a great event and one we all look forward to attending,” Mr Mathison said.

“As usual, we will host our annual art show later in the year and we’re always happy to welcome new members.”

Hamilton agents yarded 14200 lambs along with 5400 sheep at todays market. The lead lambs were ideal trade weights with good finish which covered about 50% of the yarding.

The younger and lighter conditioned lambs were evident with the drying conditions showing its effects on stock.
