2015: The year that was 2015 is over. What were the highlights? P
There was no recession and some growth was seen in the economy. In fact, consumer spending was up by approximately 3.5% for the year.
P
There was massive growth in property prices, particularly in Sydney.
P
There were no Reserve Bank of Australia interest rate rises.
P
“Cheap petrol” was available in most parts of Australia.
P
It appears that the government had developed greater community respect and support, however, at the end of 2015, there were some significant changes here, leading to a 13% swing against the government in the North Sydney by-election.
P
There were discussions relative to the GST – the Federal Treasurer and some of the State Premiers are making comments. These are ongoing making people wonder if there will be changes? Some people believe there will be, yet many others believe that it’s just a “talk fest”.
P
The Australian government released its “Innovation Statement”.
P
Exchange rates stabilised a little, with the AUD currently sitting around 70 cents against 1 USD. Some commentators believe that the exchange rate will settle around 65 cents AUD to 1 USD in 2016.
P
Cashflow management was (and still is), an enormous problem for most small businesses. It’s interesting to see that two of the major banks are promoting their services to small/medium enterprises and a couple of new banks that have recently emerged are promising to be “small business proactive”. This could lead to an interesting situation with financial offers to small businesses, particularly as some of the banks are now promoting no-security lending (cashflow lending).
What we can take away from this is that as we go into 2016, one of the big things for businesses to watch, is their position relative to interest rates. The exchange rate predictions could also have a significant impact on some businesses and may need to be taken into consideration in any forward planning. The start of a new calendar year is a great time to review budgets and cashflow forecasts and to take some time out to consider your business’ strategies for the next 12-month period. Why not have a planning day to review all of the activities within your business? Many businesses have found that one of the best ways to do this is to engage an independent facilitator to chair this process. If you would like assistance in this type of activity, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
